Creative interesting sounds, not just power chords.
Nice chill album. Would listen again but not extremely jazzed about it based on a single listen.
I'm not sure I've ever listened to an entire funk album. I liked the album cover with the afro futurism vibe from the outset.
Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication sounds like gears and lasers in the background, definitely getting a space vibe on this track. Are they constructing some robots back there?
'Give up the funk' is the one I've heard before on the radio, it's ok but it seems boring compared to some of the others from the album, but it's still catchy. This is the one that gets stuck in your head after listening.
My favorites are 'Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples' and 'Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication'.
I keep thinking, 'how are they making this sound', at certain points(in a good way), but then there is also a nice full band with an identifyable sax and piano. I really enjoyed listening to this album a few times today, but I'm not sure how much I'll go back to it. It's unique and has a fun silly theatrical vibe and I can see why it's on the list. You can feel the joy here.
3.5/5
When I listen to this album I want to be sitting in my car watching the snow slowly drift down. I get a feeling of floating from the entire album.
Idioteque is my favorite on this album.
It's a solid album.
4/5
It’s kind of fun to listen to but it seems very lyrics driven and I’m not sure I love the lyrics. Get repetitive.
Not usually a huge prog rock fan but I really liked this album! Favorites were ‘I talk to the wind’, ‘the court of the crimson king’ and’21st century schizoid man’. I can definitely see how this sound influenced Pink Floyd.
No thanks.
but 'Where is my mind?' shines.
Love ‘today’. Similar to a lot of albums— 3 of the songs stuck with me the others I might not listen to again.
I do find the Beatles to be pleasant but they just don’t resonate with me much here. The album doesn’t make me feel much.
This is supposedly their attempt to move from boy band(with all girl/woman) fans to ‘artistic’. I guess it worked in terms of critical review but it sort of just feels like they stole some stuff from India and did some drugs.
Maybe I’m missing the historical significance because I wasn’t alive when it happened.
Highlights
- 1st 2 songs
- A day in the life
Low lights
- Lovely Rita
- Within you Without you
Maps is 5/5. The rest is ok.
I really wanted to find what people see in this. I didn't find it.
Why is he singing like a hillbilly if he's from Minnesota and lives in NYC?
I may even hate him after reading: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/books/story/2022-10-27/bob-dylan-philosophy-of-modern-song-book-review
It's much more weird and experimental(almost prog rock) than the vision I had in my head of what the Beatles are (mostly based on the greatest hits).
I would agree with Frankie that there isn't alot of genuine emotion in most these songs; but to me some are pleasant or fun to listen to.
An exception for me is 'while my guitar gently weeps' which I think is a beautiful song. Happiness is a warm gun also has a satisfying arch/cresendo when it gets to the title stanza for me.
It could have been 8 songs IMO. but i like this one more than Sargent pepper.
Come clean was interesting.
Overall take: I didn't hate it. I didn't love it.
This is a difficult one to review. At first I thought it was overtly racist, but I do believe it's a critique of racism, after reading the lyrics. Still a white person saying the n word makes me uncomfortable, even if he's actually pointing out how racist both northern's and southerners were.
I saw someone describe this as dinner party music that will never be played at a dinner party because it will offend the dinner party. It's pretty accurate. I'm not typically seeking out that vibe. I like the vocals, I like the instrumentation ok. Has a new orlean's meets disney vibe lol. But I don't think satire works well in music. It doesn't come across as easy as in other mediums.
This was good but I liked parliament’s mothership earth better.
A few of the songs were quite good and I Lilly be revisiting them
fave songs: Nature boy and Nightime
The classics are classic, but too many violent skits and gun talk for me to really enjoy or identify with it.
Between a 3…4. The sounds were interesting and the lyrics I could sometimes identify with more than the gangster rap of the 90s but sometimes it felt to cheesy/preachy/religous.
I really liked the first song. Some of it was forgettable but some of it I really enjoyed.
I really like this, it’s an excellent listen.
My only reservation—I find the general 80s sound to be so of the moment and a little cheesy, like walking into a 70s kitchen, the second you walk in you know when it was made.
4.5
I keep thinking 'when will this be over'. It's worsening my headache and I've been telling my spouse it sounds alot like the wood-chipper outside my house right now.
I feel like the other listeners in my group are just trolling me and they don't actually like this. kidding.
1 star - this actively grates on me
I actually love two weeks but I’ve tried to love this full album many times since a lot of my friends with similar music taste love it and it just doesn’t fully capture me. That being said it’s probably slightly better than average. 3.5
Fun fact: my college roommate was ed droste’s cousin
I did like the last 2 songs. The rest was forgettable.
I quite like two weeks which I already was familiar with. This album doesn't spark alot of joy for me, but it's interesting enough. Is it a 3 or a 4?
It's not bad, pretty fun, but it's very samey. I'd listen to the songs again but not the full album.
What do you rate an album with two 5-star songs, a couple 4 star songs and the rest 3 star songs?
I probably won't play the whole thing through often but I'll be listening to the 5 star songs until death do us part.
I think I’m too much of a dweeb for Metallica. It gives me anxiety
Still so beatles-like and I'm not a huge beatles fan.
better than blonde on blonde but still not great
Had a really strong start but became to beatles-esque
Dark humor and serious melancholy, somehow it works. With synths layered over indie folk, John Grant is unexpectedly brilliant.
Top tracks: Queen of Denmark, Where Dreams Go To Die
umm...idk i was vibing until they started growling
Considering how annoying I found 'Take me out' to be when it was on the radio I appreciated this album much more than I thought I would.
Ended strong. I'm torn because some felt mediocre to my ears. Probably a 3.5
This is some weird shit
Tainted love is a banger
'In Search Of…' is the better N.E.R.D. album
It's fine but I never understand why people are so passionate about them
I appreciate the guitars but not the singing.
