1001 Albums Summary

Quintessential Springsteen. Don’t think I’ve ever listened to the album straight through and it was definitely worth it. Thunder Road and Jungleland made me look up piano tutorials to see if I could tackle them. Probably not.

A Forest was the only skip on the Cure’s Greatest Hits. It’s a stand out track on this album. That said I didn’t hate the album and it was kind of cool to hear their earlier post punk roots.

Great no skip album. One of the great songwriters.

I can appreciate the artistry. I had a copy of Milk-eyed Mender back when it was released, but hadn’t listened to this album yet. I’m no stranger to quirky singing, but this is one I’d need to come back to while in a specific mood to get the most from it.

I usually don’t listen to mainstream Christmas music, but when I do, this is what I enjoy.

Loved Feel Flows, probably because I recognized it from Almost Famous.

Was a bit bored with this and wanted it to be over. Good ambiance music, but not for me to intentionally listen to.

Hard to believe they included Mother in this.

Great find. Hadn’t listened to Steely Dan before and am glad I discovered this along with Can’t Buy a Thrill. Will be in the rotation going forward.

Nice album, but would have enjoyed listening to less cover songs so maybe not the album I would have chosen for the list.

Acknowledging that there were a few catchy hooks on the hits, between the cringy misogynistic and violent skits and the repetitive and repulsive lyrics, I wasn’t able to find enough redeemable qualities musically to merit more stars. I don’t require that artists share my values, but there was nothing remotely relatable about this album for me.

I’m admittedly drawn to unconventional, typically baritone singers, brooding poetic songwriting, and slow burn music. I first heard of Nick Cave from the Leonard Concert tribute concert. I’ve tried to get into him before and failed, but this time around I plan to incorporate him into my more regular rotation when the mood is right.

The high points for the album I actually kind of enjoyed, namely Non-alignment Pact and Humor Me, but the low points really dragged this album down. I’m fine with weird for the sake of weird, but when it’s actually unpleasant to the ears it’s hard to score this higher than 2 stars.

Sure. Production was strong, but there was probably a reason I’d never heard of this group.

First experience with Zappa. Wasn’t disappointed.

Unfortunately was a bit bored with this one, but otherwise nice to experience some less popular Bob Marley tracks.

I went into this totally blind and at first I was so excited to find something so good that I had never heard of before. Then the album fell off so hard with two tracks that I can only expect were created to piss people off and guarantee the band’s failure like a group of untalented middle school students trying their hardest to irritate anyone within earshot. Am I naive to expect that experimental music should still maintain some semblance of musical characteristics? What a shame.

Pretty cool to fall asleep to and I mean that in a good way. Could be listed on the Calm app. And then it’s kinda punk which was also nice.

Lots of silly filler in an otherwise amazing classic album. Could have been 5 if it was about ten songs shorter.

Never disliked what I had heard of the White Stripes, but never sought them out. I might be a new fan.

“This sounds a lot like Dino Jr” I say to myself before learning that Lou Barlow is a founding member.

More palatable than Doggy Style.

This is a fun hip hop album with some superb use of samples. Proof that you can make great rap music without overdoing the overt violence and misogyny. Just remove the skits and orgee tracks and you have a 5 star album.

As a Neil Young album I’m tempted to give this closer to a 3, as there are better albums (Harvest, Goldrush, Harvest Moon), but still a solid 4 amongst the generator albums.

Meh.

A bit too poppy for my taste, but the talent and appeal is apparent.

Well, I wanted to rate this a 3 or 4, but then I read the album description. Bummer.

Never heard of this before. Not bad by any stretch, but I could probably list 1,000 albums that are more deserving of its spot on this list.

Can’t help but feel like this was included on the list for one track.

Solid debut album with standout tracks, All I Need, Release yo Delf, Mr. Sandman.

Going into this I thought, “Okay, there’s going to be 2 hit singles with a ton of filler like most modern pop albums”, but this really did feel like a quality record with pretty great songwriting throughout. I have a newfound respect for Adele as an artist. While she’s not my style exactly I feel like this album will withstand the test of time many years from now.

This was a slog. To put out a double album and have not a single one be memorable makes me really question why this is included in the list. I give two stars for at least drawing on good influences, but I would never consider this to be influential in itself. The “dedication to fans” bit was pretty amusing though given that it was just playing fans’ dedication to Christina.

First revisit to this album in 23ish years, and maybe musical maturity is realizing that Hitch a Ride is the best song on the album. Don’t know why but I was getting Air Supply vibes if Air Supply tried to be a metal band. A bit cringey, but nevertheless a pretty strong good feelings album.

Pretty chill spa music. Great for weekend background music.

Nice find. I’m into this. Not my first exposure to stereolab, but have never paid much attention before now.

This album got a blank stare from me when it turned up as I have never heard of Bill Callahan nor Smog and I had no idea of even what genre to expect. Well I am now becoming a fan of both. This may be my favorite discovery on the generator thus far. I deduct one star for the final track being extremely repetitive and 7 minutes too long. Otherwise the songwriting, accompaniment and unconventional singing were all a win for me.

Bob made me appreciate music and songwriting. This album punches you in the gut from the first second to the last.

Not bad actually.

Not the easiest listen but could suit the right mood.

I wanted to like it more than I did. This feeling wasn’t helped by the last minute and a half of You Could Be Love. Minus one star for that.

On paper I should like this, but was just wanting it to be over. Giving it a very begrudging 3 for some respectable songwriting.

The bells are not as tubular as I had hoped.

Early on in the album I had settled on a 3 rating, but by the end I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I had.

Always kind of disliked these guys for their diss track on Neil Young, but have never given them a proper chance. The truth is I like southern rock and this is a great band.

Indian Moby? Why not?

Music was kinda great, but the vocals were legitimately off putting.

“Wow this sucks” - Me during every single track.

One of the best of the best from the best of the best. The original cut, Blood on the Tapes, might even be superior.

A strong album dragged down by a lot of bloat.

Met my expectations. They were low.

I think I’m just not that into Elvis Costello.

A respectable 3. 4 hits doesn’t make this great when the other tracks are completely forgettable.

Under the Bridge and 110 minutes of cringe.

Despite some slight bloat, it’s basically a perfect album.

I’ve heard a lot of recommendations for this band so I had high hopes. The album improved as it went on but man this was disappointing.

Big improvement on Blue Lines. Not something I’d go out of my way to listen to, but it was nice background music. Put me to sleep a couple times so had a few repeat listens.

One of the first albums I acquired when I started collecting. Felt appropriate for the day my father in law passed. Some absolutely great songs from my favorite Beatle. I want to deduct a star for it being bloated, but I’m feeling generous.

I expected more from this.

Surprising myself by giving this 4 stars. Have never heard a Kanye album before and this was pretty good.

For an artist I’ve never heard of I was very pleasantly surprised.

Not really into jazz where the bass is playing a different song than the other band members.

The music itself is a forgettable 3 stars, but fatigue is starting to set in. Hoping this is my third and final Elvis Costello album.
