First Band On The Moon

Great representation of the 90s. I've heard it before but it's been many years. I'll probably listen to it again someday or possibly other albums from their discography.

the first 5 tracks go crazy. definitely a front-loaded record. Lovefool and Losers and Choke are the hits of the back half and Choke is a lovely ending. can't believe I haven't picked it up before ! favs: Been It, Your New Cuckoo

The Cardigans were always a little too nice for me. I prefer music to be slightly nasty, music you wouldn't strike up convo with in a pub. These guys would be among your best friends after one friendly chat. It's not bad, there are a ocuple of wonderful tracks, it just doesn't really stir any depth of feeling beyond the pleasant smile on the surface.

Wow! I had never really listened to them before, but I knew of them. Nina Persson's voice is so soothing and entrancing. This album is excellent! I am really loving this album. Cheerful, bopping, jazz/pop/rock. There's even flutes!

Wasnt too bad, love the singers voice. Was glad to hear Lovefool, its a great song. Wouldnt say no to listening again. 3 stars

Bright, happy Scandi-pop from the 1990s. It's got a kind of dreamy, cool vibe, rather than pure cheesy pop. I remember the big single from this. The whole album sounds pretty good - better than most Britpop of the period at least. I don't think there's enough here for it to be essential listening by any means... 3/5

Lovefool is a classic. When I first heard Your New Cuckoo, I thought this album would be very one note. However after listening to a lot of the tracks I was quickly proven wrong. I love love the Iron Man cover, what an excellent spin on that song.

I can't rate this without significant bias: 1) I'm coming right frim Cheap Trick which, in conparison, makes this look like gold. 2) The singer's voice is intoxicating in a good way. The kinda voice I'd rather hear sing, even if the music isn't... good. 3) Lovefool is on this album? Thats an insta point. 4) 'Your New Cuckoo' is particularly intoxicating. 5) The music part is not something I'm immediately comfortable just rating. Its multifaceted in ways that I'd need to be more attentive to. It is mostly entertaining to me though. 6) Its a... girlpop. so... I'm gonna have to say its just good!

Reminds me a lot of the twee/anorak pop from groups like Tallulah Gosh, Marine Girls, and Heavenly (sans the school-aged imagery that followed around these twee as fuck bands). However, unlike those groups, The Cardigans manage to be even more sugary sweet, hiding all the bitter bite of their punk in their lyrics. The album is swimming with sweet-sounding songs about heartbreak ("Your New Cuckoo"; "Lovefool"), sardonic songs lampooning the facile images of a woman in love ("Been It"; "Step on Me"), a great song about a one-night stand ("Heartbreaker"). What's more, The Cardigans always seem to pull away from the sweetness at just the right moment, preventing the listener from feeling overwhelmed by the saccharine sound of the music. If twee pop was punk in a school uniform, The Cardigans is punk in a prom dress, the very poofiest one. Between a 3 and 4, but closer to a 4.

Relaxed, fun album. Some new songs for me that I liked (Your New Cuckoo, Never Recover, the Iron Man cover). I’ll give them a 4 in part because I think their sound is unique.

Interesting. Did not expect the Iron Man cover from the Lovefool band. There more here than meets the eye.

Never knew this was more than a “one hit wonder” for Love Fool. But can say after listening to this album, which was their most sold,they should have stuck with the one hit. I watched 3 in video style and that helped,but feel the lead singer is too whispy of a vocal lead to push the great beat and words to the top. I did like New Cuckoo and Been It. The Iron Man remake was blasphemy of an amazing song that should never be tweaked. Cant image who permitted the desecration of such an Iron Clad song. So, nope Swedes, not impressed.

12 year old me had a huge crush on Nina out of the Cardigans. Having said that I only know the brilliant Lovefool from this album, so was excited for this. Sadly it’s mostly filled with quite average 90s pop songs. Her voice is undeniably sexy and carries a lot of it but this album has no place on a list of 1001 great albums. 2/5 and that’s almost entirely for lovefool and the singer being hot.

Okay now this is a good album. At first, all I was thinking was this sounds like some Gwen Stefani wannabee but as soon as I heard Lovefool, I realized what I did was wrong. Very moody but didn't lose that feeling of rock. The cover of Iron Man was also very well done and I may like it more than the original. I don't have much else to say other than it's a great listen but I don't see myself listening to it more than a couple of times, I think 3 would be enough.

When I first saw the album on the website I was scratching my head trying to figure out why the name sounded familiar. Then when I pulled the album up the lightbulb went off. Lovefool was one of my childhood favorite songs and comes with a story. One of the few memories I have from living in Minnesota is getting on an ice cold bus in the morning to go to school and one of the neighbor girls, don’t remember her name, but on the bus this song came on and she turned around and did a lip sync of it to me. That memory has always stuck with me and I always think about it when listening to love fool. I don’t think anyone had sang to me before so it was a big deal. But not as big a deal as this band being the first band on the moon! I’m saddened they weren’t able to film their moon visit because that would be cool to hear them perform Lovefool in Lunar Orbit or even on the moons surface. Unfortunately, their album cover is forgettable and most of the other songs on the album are equally unremarkable. They have an interesting sound that seems like something out of the 70’s flower child movement but the lyrics did not stick with me at all. Except for Lovefool (and the Iron Man cover!). I love that song.

I reallly love lovefool but its a rather average album

I've always known The Cardigans as a one-hit wonder responsible for "Lovefool," which I'm very pleased to see is on this album. I know Alex is clamoring for classics, but I appreciate a chance to revisit a band like this to see how the album cuts were. I've been enjoying the album, finding a few tracks I like here and there, and then Lovefool comes on and I realize it's the hit single for a reason. Such a perfect jam, all the other pretty good songs pale in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this album, but I totally understand the one-hit wonder status because I can't imagine the Cardigans ever reaching that height again. Shout-out to the "Iron Man" cover though, that's actually pretty awesome. Favorite tracks: Lovefool (by a mile), Iron Man, Been It. Album art: Surely this was part of a fan submission contest for "worst album cover imaginable"? Extremely blurry band photo, and it's just the drummer. Is this even the Cardigans in the shot? I don't know, and I also don't care. I had to check out all their other album covers and yes, this is easily the worst. Do better, guys. 3.5/5

Didn’t realize this is the band that made Lovefool. Singer has beautiful vocals, love the tempo of the entire album. Last song feels like end credits 4.2

Trippy Swedish indie pop

Surprisingly I liked a few songs off this album!

Surprisingly really good

I’m giving it two stars for the ‘Lovefool’ song, but a one-hit wonder doesn’t make an album iconic. Feels like scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I liked this one pretty well, though I don’t know that I would look up more on purpose. I wouldn’t turn it if it came on, though. This is in my wheelhouse era of music, so I was pretty sure I would like it.

I always liked Lovefool since I heard it on KROC in the 90's, but man this whole album was a knockout! Not a song I didn't enjoy. Love their warm, unpredictable chord changes. I really like Nina's voice and the band is stellar. Thought I was hearing Black Sabbath influence in one of the earlier songs but figured I was imagining it - then they did that incredible Iron Man cover. Risky move but I thought they pulled it off, reimagining it in their own distinctive style. Didn't realize they were from Sweden. 5 stars!

Before I get into my review, is that Hector Salamanca in the music video for "Your New Cuckoo"? I was genuinely suprised when I heard the funky bass line and dance drums at the beginning of this album, I was not expecting it, given the album cover, then I realized that this is the band that made "Lovefool" (which is a fantastic song) so the funky vibes started to make sense. The vocals on this album remind me so much of Mars Argo, and both bands even have the same kind of baroque quirkiness to them. I love the unconventional instruments used in these songs, ones that weren't too popular in the 90's rock albums like strings, flutes, trumpet, even the theremin. The melodies on this album are very modern sounding, I had to go and double check the year this album was released because it sounds very 2010's, especially the iron man cover. I really enjoyed how funky and jazzy this album got while maintaining an overall indie-rock kind of feeling. I wish the album was longer because I would have liked to hear some more of these ideas fleshed-out, but I love what we got. This is going onto the list of albums I need to re-listen to. Favorite track: Your New Cuckoo - Least favorite track: Losers

I'm listening to The Cardigan's 'First Band on the Moon' and I'm having a little trouble with it. I'm two songs away from their gigantic hit 'Lovefool' and I can imagine liking this in the 90s. I think no matter how jaded and serious you can get about music, it's always nice to be open to some very finely produced pop music. I went into this album thinking I would not enjoy it very much. It makes me wonder if this is really one of the 1001 Albums I MUST listen to before I die? Lovefool has kicked in now. It's a great song and I have no complaints about hearing it again. Though I believe in the last twenty years I've been very sick of it. It was everywhere in TV and movies for a while. I would take this off the list. It's a great little album and very finely crafted musically. And the singing and vocals are nice. It's gotten to be sicky sweet. I'll finish the album. We are doing a Black Sabbath cover, okay well this is kind of cool. And odd. Okay it's finished and I'll say it was sugary and sweet, and elevated above your standard pop - but just not my speed these days.

Pleasant fun. Only heard the radio single "lovefool" before. As an album it's a bit weirder than I had expected from the single. Are they quoting black fucking sabbath on "heartbreaker?" As I'm listening I think it's starting to grow on me. And then just straight up cover Iron Man?!

Saccharinely sweet. I do like her voice though, but I might prefer it in a different context. No idea that "Lovefool" was this band, crazy. That Ironman cover was unexpected, kind of like it?

Intriguing, quirky, and kind of fun, but a lot of noise as well. Very strange version of Iron Man.

While definitely not something I could listen to any day, it's something I surely would find myself revisiting whenever I'm in the mood for some more lighthearted, perhaps even saccharine tunes.

An album that I'm kind of surprised to see here (The Cardigans are considered a one-hit wonder, after all). Went into it thinking my mind wouldn't be changed, but this is a great pop/rock record with some fun disco and grunge influences. The "Iron Man" cover is super fun, too. Favorite tracks: "Been It", "Lovefool", "Happy Meal II"

This is absolutely brilliant - why have I never heard this before? I guess they are victims of being percieved to have a novelty hit. The arrangements are fantastic, the songs instantly engaging, the vocals are perfect. What a find!
