The White StripesGlad I listened to this. I hadn’t before. However, aside from the obvious seven nation army it didn’t really grab me as anything new. Solid but not really a standout.
Glad I listened to this. I hadn’t before. However, aside from the obvious seven nation army it didn’t really grab me as anything new. Solid but not really a standout.
I think I always thought of this album as the midway point between R.E.M being an indy band and getting huge. The one album that could keep everyone happy. Life’s Rich Pageant was always my favourite but can’t argue this one.
I knew that the Doors would show up one day. Not sure why I am so out of step with the rest of the world on this but there is something so grating about them. 0 stars if I could. But, I did listen to the whole thing so I think I deserve something.
Don’t think I’d ever heard this before. Not sure it is a favourite though. The
Really tried to like this. Just feels like way too many sounds and effects thrown together.
I’d only ever listened to greatest hits collections and have always been a fan. Kind of cool to hear a full album.
I wasn’t a big fan when this would have been released but have learned to like Depeche Mode over time. This is another band where I’ve probably been spoiled by greatest hits compilations.
Way too much. Way too much moaning.
Not sure how I often I will listen to this. However, I’ve never really listened to Elvis outside of what was on radio or TV. It really surprised me how much I enjoyed this.
Couple of songs I enjoyed, but not sure I will ever go back to them.
Don’t think I’ve really listened to them before. Will give this one another go later.
Nothing really stood out for me unfortunately.
Tempted to give a 4. Interesting read about some of the history, and I listened to it twice.
Not a regular listen for me. But, still a very strong album.
I know this was a big album when it came out but I’ve never been a fan. Just never sat well with me. Giving a two as there is likely something I’m missing.
I obviously know just about every song on the album, and they are almost all great. However, I don’t think I’d ever sit down and decide to listen to the album. Not sure why. I’m giving it a 2 knowing that it really is a secret 3 for me and likely deserves a 4.
Can’t think of many albums I dislike more. Many much better punk bands to listen to.
Nope
Almost dropped it down to a 4 as it does sound a bit dated. But, this is such a huge album.
Nostalgia maybe? Great album. But, over time I find less and less of a need to listen.
Had never listened to this before. Will give it another go at some point. But, didn’t really grab me.
Glad I listened to this. I hadn’t before. However, aside from the obvious seven nation army it didn’t really grab me as anything new. Solid but not really a standout.
Always been a big Bob Mould fan. Album was a bit too long for me.
Not my thing.
Never thought of ABBA as anything other than a collection of greatest hits. Interesting to listen to a full album. Unfortunately the non hits kind of get overshadowed and it is hard to really give them a true listen. Never been a huge fan but hard to argue with.
First listened to this after reading the Ian Rankin novel. Not every day listening, but I do like it.
Don’t think this is my favourite. But, I am a fan. Another artist where we seem to be overwhelmed by greatest hits and miss a lot of good music.
Very solid first album. Their sound seemed so developed already.
Unh unh can’t make me do it. Couldn’t get through the whole thing. But, just feels like a very long vanity project. A big James Bond vibe for me though.
Maybe deserved a four. Really strong but not my thing.
I think I always thought of this album as the midway point between R.E.M being an indy band and getting huge. The one album that could keep everyone happy. Life’s Rich Pageant was always my favourite but can’t argue this one.
Used to listen to this years ago. Love it. So simple, stripped down and just about perfect.
I never really think of their albums when I think of the band. Prefer to listen to greatest hits. Nice to relisten. WFL any lazyitis the standouts.
Joe Ely seems to have played with everyone. Band mates have gotten around too. Not my thing though
Will listen to this again. I always find with Radiohead that I need to listen a couple of times.
Two big songs (Dolphins and Everybody’s talking). But not enough for me.
Not for me.
Meh
Love Miles Davis but have never been a super fan of his electric stuff. But, this is really good. The band is basically the who’s who of electric/fusion jazz
Odd album, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Obviously a huge album when released. I was never a grunge guy, and I just never enjoyed this one.
Interesting concept and many one early examples of the genre. But not for me.
Really liked the groove on this. It really surprised me.
Not much of a fan of 90s hard rock.
Don’t know I’d ever listened to this. Will definitely add it to favourites.
Obviously a big album when released. Was excited when I saw it come up but parts seem a bit dated today. Maybe didn’t age as well as I’d hoped.
Was really looking forward to this but was a little disappointed. A couple of bright spots. You ain’t done nothin was a favourite for me.
A few were catchy, but weren’t going to be more than background music for me.
I really kind of liked this. Music that just pure straight ahead rock and roll in spirit. A couple of bits reminded me of the Stones.
Not sure why, but Stuck in a moment…. has always been one of my favourite songs. However, the rest of the album didn’t really do much for me. Five stars for the one song. 2 for the rest of the album.
I knew that the Doors would show up one day. Not sure why I am so out of step with the rest of the world on this but there is something so grating about them. 0 stars if I could. But, I did listen to the whole thing so I think I deserve something.
Ok album but not really a hit for me. One song that really stuck with me was Omaha. Sounded very similar to City of New Orleans. Interesting read on his history and life though.
Surprised me how much I liked this. One critique may be that the songs seem a bit scattered. Some pop, more bluesy even a few hints of country. Lots of big names on the album too. Ronnie Wood, Danny Thompson, Long John Baldry. Can’t remember which song but the Mandolin on one of them sounds so similar to what REM would do 20 years later (I don’t think it was Mandolin Wind though)
Used to listen to this album all the time. A true classic. Sometimes the keyboard sounds seem a little dated, but you need to keep in mind how new the technology was at the time.
Didn’t dislike but just not my thing.
I loved this album! Not sure if there was a song I didn’t like. Ended up listening three times.
Only a four because Astral weeks is better. Of all of the big songs from this album, Moondance is actually my least favourite. Caravan, Glad Tidings and Everyone are my favs.
Giving this a three for now as I’m not sure. Definitely a difficult album to get into but I’m really curious how I will feel after another couple of listens. Unfortunately Inlistenedbin the car and didn’t really give it full attention. My three could easily move to a two or four.
Ok album didn’t really get a close enough listen to be confident of rating.
Interesting Suede vs London Suede. When Inlistened at home the artist was Suede but when Inwas out they came up as London Suede. Not really a must listen today though. Seemed to remember it as a bigger deal at the time though. You can definitely feel their influence on other contemporaries though
I was very surprised by how lukewarm I was to this. Obviously some well known songs on the album. But, they just didn’t sound special. Surprised I’m giving it a 2
Just rocks.
One of the big Jazz players that I’ve never really listened to. Bemsha Swing a favourite for me.
I’ve always like Richard Thompson but had never listened to this album. Worth another listen.
I’ve never been a big Beck fan. Maybe on a second listen. But a 2 for now.
Didn’t listen too closely but never really felt too excited.
One of those classic albums that you can’t say no to. Probably worth a four but I think I’ve listened to enough Zeppelin in my life.
A couple of things that stood out for me. Definitely I can only take Simon & Garfunkel in small doses. I don't think I could listen to this to frequently. Very interesting backstories on some of the songwriting credits. I'd read about the connection to the Martin Carthy arrangement of Scarborough Fair and grief ofer not attributing to 'Traditional'. I hadn't known of issues with Cloudy though. One song really surprised me for how Bob Dylan like it sounded. I may be wrong, but recordings of some of the songs felt different than I remembered. Maybe different mixes/recordings, or maybe in my mind.
I liked the album and listened twice. However, nothing really stuck with me.
Not really for me b
This was a bit of a surprise for me. First, I don’t think I’d ever listened to them much before other that the hits (Inreally enjoyed the album). Second, I didn’t realize there were so many of them. Third, I didn’t realize they were so prolific. I think I saw them live at University one time too
Definitely not a Def Leppard fan. Interesting personal note though. I had never connected the song Hysteria with the album. I was familiar with the song, didn’t know the title, and didn’t know what it was about.
Not my thing.
Didn’t expect to like this. It did grow on me though. Not sure it will be a regular listen but it pulled me in. May be a little long though. Always think it must have been an exciting time for an electronic musician so many new sounds and techniques to learn and explore.
Clear #1 of the big three jazz albums of all time. Hard to find a stronger 5.
Seems like half of this album got radio play and there are definitely a number of hits sprinkled in. I seem to remember that this album like a bit of a fresh throwback when it came out. I definitely would have been listening to this a lot when it came out. A two may be unfair, but it doesn’t seem to have aged well to me.
Not really my thing
I haven’t listened to this in years. Biggest observation for me is what a well recorded album. It just sounds great. This is actually one that I may go back and listen to extended editions. I’m curious about the Live in Hull recordings.
Nice for a change but not a regular listen. I have an old Papa Wemba album that has a very similar vibe.
Album didn’t really do much for me. Good Lovin obviously their hit. But I will pass.
Two thoughts on this. First, it was definitely quite new and innovative when released and likely mad others rethink what rock music could be. Second, I didn’t find it particularly great listening. Bonus fun. I did a bunch of reading on all of the arrangements. I’d been familiar with Ravel’s and the original piano setting but didn’t realize how many different ones were out there.
Not for me.
Obviously a number of big hits on this. However, this does sound a bit too 80s for me. Doesn’t have the feel I remembered.
I’ve never really been a big band fan. However, I definitely enjoyed some of the slower pieces over the faster ones.
Didn’t think I need another classic rock album to listen to. Obviously this is good with well known songs. And, it is Zeppelin. I found myself really listening to John Paul Jones on this album. He really stood out. Solid three but won’t be a regular listen for me.
Odd how tastes change over time. At one point I would have loved the more bluesy songs album. Today they sound a bit repetitive. This version of Layla is still my favourite by a long shot.
Was actually looking forward to this. But, nothing really popped for me.
Loved the band, loved Aretha Franklin. Great album.
I did see Jerry Lee Lewis live at one point (very late in career). However, I also saw Fats Domino the same summer. Shouldn’t make the comparison but whenever I hear Jerry Lee Lewis I immediately remember how good Fats Domino was.
Not my thing. I’ve never seen the big deal about Harry Nillson. The coconut song has to be one of the most annoying ever though.
I’d never listened to her before and enjoyed this album. Folky, but with a quite modern feel. I also listened to her previous album as well.
Not a regular listen for me. But this obviously had a huge influence on the genre.
Block Rockin Beats is obviously the big track on this album. The rest felt like a bit much for me. Cool what they are doing but I may have a limited attention span for it.
A new album for me. Really liked Alice in Wonderland. To me he has such a distinctive sound.
I liked this but a I’ve never really of this as album music. A full album sometimes feels a bit much for me.
I suspect this takes a number of listens to really appreciate. It didn’t really stick with me after the first.
Love this album. Sonmanyngreatbsongs.
I know there are some diehards out there but I’ve never really been a Muse fan.
I.G.Y isn’t good enough to rescue this album for me. Hard pass on this one.
Way too many different sounds at once. Not my thing.
Not sure about this one. I really feel like I would need to listen a number of time to truly get a feel with it. Incredible voice though. Some of the arrangements were really good. Maybe should be rated higher but not sure.
Struggled to find the version Inwanted to listen to. 4 stars only because I need to leave room for Sgt Pepper.
Loved this. Another case of an artist where we are so focused on the hits that we tend to forget the albums.
Had never listened to this before and was really looking forward to it. I think for me the magic of Queen is the pairing of complex prog rock arrangements with a pop hook. I don’t think they have the balance right on this album.
Obvious hits on the album, and an important album for her re-emergence as a superstar. But doesn’t really stick with me. Maybe I have memories of the hits saturating the radio. I never knew that Private Dancer was a Mark Knopfler song (seems to feel like it know that I know). I also don’t remember Help! from the album. Looks like it wasn’t on the US release. Not sure in Canada.
Always had a soft spot for the band.
Was on repeat in the background a few times today. Can’t say I was entirely engaged. But a nice casual groove.
Everyone needs a ten minute song like Child in Time every once in a while. Not a regular listen though.
I really liked this album. Not full of hits. But I listened twice.
Hearing the intros and story telling between songs really made this album.
Had to listen to this twice as it slowly grew on me. A nice variety of sounds.
This album is so tight, and felt so fresh when it was released. Not my favourite by them. But still holds up. Seemed to dominate the airwaves on release.
I hadn’t listened to this for ages. Forgot how amazing this album is. The title track is obviously a standout. But the whole album is quite special.
Hmmm. I love Fatboy Slim. But, have never really listened to a full album and always thought about remixes and single.
This album still sticks with me. I think I prefer Peace and Love as it always felt a bit more rounded. But still a great album. Kirsty MacColl on the album is a bonus for me.
Quality all the way through and the gold standard for concept albums.
A two for the familiarity of the songs from their best of. But, I’ve never really been a fan.
Not a favourite of mine. Wouldn’t have enjoyed when came out, and still not my thing.
Trompe Le Monde and Surfer Rosa are the two Pixies albums I’m most familiar with but this is worth a listen too.
Four out of eight songs are still going strong. Pretty amazing debut album. Probably a five if I haven’t heard their hits so many times. Maybe not fair.
It sure it is my favourite of their albums.
Sisters of Mercy, and So long Marriane are favourites. Bonus points for Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye as couldn’t remember it.
There are two Stones albums I like. Exile on Mainstreet and Sticky fingers. This one gets a four because Exile is my five.
Way too angry for me.
A few nice songs. But, couldn’t really enjoy the bulk of the album.
Didn’t really find this particularly exciting. Not likely to listen again.
Didn’t dislike this, but not sure it aged well and doesn’t really stand out.
Rush has always been a difficult band for me. When I was younger I thought they were the best thing ever. Over time I’ve found myself listening to them less and less often. Still, a very unique album.
Pretty cool for someone in her genre to have their first album be full of their own compositions. This doesn’t seem to be the norm. Not a huge fan but a very solid debut.
Not for me. Grunge has never been my thing.
Not sure why I like this album so much. Not at all like anything else I listen to.
Not my favourite of the Beatles albums.
Not sure why but I found myself pulled into this album. Drumming consistently on my desk as I listened. May never listen again but glad it came up.
Imagine obviously the massive song. But kind hit or miss for the rest. I do like Jealous Guy though.
I don’t think Inhad ever listened to this all the way through. Obviously a big album in the metal world. Hard to believe this was from 1970.
Probably have heard Stairway to Heaven enough by now. But, love this album.
Never really listened to a full Tom Waits album. This was a good intro. Obviously his delivery puts you on edge for a number of songs. Downtown Train is an interesting song for me. I don’t associate with Tom Waits, and not even Rod Stewart. Feels so much like Bruce Springteen. I know it isn’t him but can’t stop hearing him (I know he has another song by the same name)
I think this was my first listen to her. Didn’t love the whole album, but overall a good listen.
Was on in background. Didn’t really grab me.
Stuck on repeat. I must have listened to the album four times. Aside from the obvious hits. I’m looking through you, and if I needed someone were surprises for me.
Didn’t realize this was compiled from multiple sessions. I know this is a big album but something about the recording just sounds harsh to me.
Not super excited by this. Obviously a couple of hits but nothing that really stuck with me.
Always forget how long they have been around. Enjoyed listening to the album as opposed to the greatest hits we normally hear.
Really wasn’t a fan. All sounded rather bland.
Loved this album.
This felt a little dated to me.
Very clear memories about how different this album was when it was released.
Ik, but not a real standout for me.
This was a nice discovery for me. I had read about him before. But, had never listened to his music.
Never been a fan.
One of the Wilco albums I’m not super familiar. Can’t say I love it yet as I typically need to listen a number of times to really appreciate.
Listened, but not close enough to give a fair rating. Am planning on listening again though.
Probably deserves a second listen. The Fatboy Slim remix of Brimful of Asha is so burned in my mind it is hard not to think of it while listening to the album.
I think this is my favourite album ever. As a bonus I didn’t know it was available in stereo until my mid 20’s. I’d only ever heard the mono release.
Can’t say I ever really understood Bjork.
First listen for this album. Was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Completely new music for me. Love the horn in Cool in the pool.
Sometimes think I don’t like Neil Young as much as I should. At some point I should make the effort though.
Never really been a Bowie fan. Someday maybe.
Wow. When they say Ambient they aren’t kidding. Not my thing but actually kind of cool. Not a surprise If I say I won’t remember a second of this.
Didn’t realize how old this album was. Not a huge fan though.
I’ve always kind of liked the version of Comfortably Numb.
By far my favourite Stones album.
Two minds on this album. Ray Charles is amazing on it. But, I’m not a fan of the overall recording. Something about the mix or engineering makes the band/strings sound rough.
Something about Boston. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed them.
Very much felt like background music to me. Some enjoyable parts but so repetitive that it doesn’t really feel like something you would listen to as an album b
Not sure this will be a regular listen. But, this was the first time I’ve listened to the complete album.
Way too long for me.
Not a musician or an album I’ve listened too often. But love the sound.
I listened, but not close enough to comment.
Absolutely loved this album. Never listened to it before but had it on repeat.
Like Megadeth more than Metallica but not a regular listen.
Never really been a fan.
Nothing really engaged me on this album.
I was really looking forward to this album as I didn’t really remember it. However, it doesn’t seem to have aged well.
I think I’m familiar with the greatest hits offerings that the album didn’t really wow me.
Takes a few listens to really start enjoying this. But, an all time favourite for me.
A three but that is maybe a little bit based on how I remember Yes. Innovative as they were, some sounds seem very dated.
Was surprised how much I enjoyed this. Not normally my thing.
Nice voice but not really my thing.
Another band that I know largely from greatest hits. I really enjoyed this.
Never a massive fan but always a good listen.
Never really been a huge fan.
Was really looking forward to this one. But found it didn’t seem to age well.
By no means a super fan. But, one of the punk bands from that time that I do kind of enjoy.
Good addition to the list. Feels like a classic.
Honestly have never been a fan of Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins etc. was hoping I would enjoy this after not listening to the whole album for ages. Three stars as there are many hits. Just not my thing though.
I might be in the minority in loving Bob Mould’s solo work more than band work.
Not an easy listen for me. I think I would need to listen a number of times to really have a feeling for this.
This just didn’t do anything for me.
Another band where I am familiar with greatest hits but unfamiliar it’s their albums. Really enjoyed this.
Love this album.
Two minds on this. It was definitely noteworthy when released. However, I don’t think I need to listen again. 3 stars for the memories.
This was huge when released.
Lots of memories of this one.
I don’t know if good background music is a compliment or not. But enjoyed this in a non-active listening way.
I honestly don’t know about this one. Was hard to listen to the first time through but did grow on me. I think this will take a bit of listening to make a rating I’m comfortable. Three for now as it is in the middle.
Didnt really grab me.
A bit to 80s for me to really love.
Lots of memories of them. Doesn’t really feel like an album though.
Doesn’t strike me as his best. This is Hell has always been a favourite for me though.
Memories of years ago. While they are a great band something about them just never resonated with me.
Another instance where listening to an album rather than the greatest hits is worth it.
I bought this when first released. Have always loved this album.
One of my favourites.
Not for me.
Never sure if I’m a fan or not. But, a great album nonetheless. Vivid memories of getting this for Christmas.
A good album. But, I’m not sure it is on my must have list. Many Blues albums I would prefer to listen to.
I’ve always been a little lukewarm about this album. Seems wrong to say, but I love the rest of the band more than Coltrane.
I’ve listened to this off an on for a number of years. Never been a diehard fan but a great album.
I do like this album. Not sure it would be in any of my top lists though.
