Reviews (page 15 of 15)

OMG I can’t believe this was 100% my favourite music and a top-5 artist. The reason I was a DJ. I can make the argument that his earlier stuff was better (and sure, Everybody Loves a 303 was head and shoulders better than this), but wow. It’s amazing how much your taste can change over 20 years. And yeah, this album fucking sucks. Wow. I can’t believe how bad. But the two popular tracks are what they are, and they’re not bad after all is said and done. So two stars.

Some really great stuff if you’re in the mood

Near perfect, sound of my yoof

Interesting, nice change of pace

Audible para ser hip hop

Ace! Made me want to jump up and dance.

Fully expected to hate this album since I’m not into dance music but found it overall pretty enjoyable. Songs are a little long and repetitive but I guess that’s just the genre. Standout tracks were “Right Here, Right Now” and “Gangster Trippin”.

Wish there were more lyrics

I know what Fatboy Slim is!

Good album, listened to many times.

This is more fun and interesting than the other electronic albums on this list so far, but I still can really only care so much

A classic

Some great singles, but doesn't half get repetitive after a while: 2 bar vocal loop, breakbeat, and repeat

Not my brand of electronic music, but I’m sure it was huge back in 1998 club scenes. It was cool hearing where the Rockefeller skank beat came from.

The extended funkadelic attention spans of the 90s, pure warehouse vibes

This earns 2 stars solely for "Praise You" because "The Rockafeller Skank" was a fun flashback for only about 60 seconds, and I don't ever need to hear anything else from this album.

Never listened to an electronic album before, so I was skeptical but became pleasantly surprised. Each song is long, and you'd think it would be repetitive, but there's enough variation to keep you interested. The best example is The Rockafeller Skank which is just a single line repeated over 7 minutes, but Fatboy Slim's experimental movements are almost classical. With the exception of "Praise You", I did feel the second side was weaker in the first, but you can tell Fatboy Slim is having fun.

Not as good as I remembered.

Only ever felt the commercially released tracks is what makes the album. Even a listen through now still not feeling the rest.

strong start but becomes samey after a while. The hits are outstanding but the album doesn't feel like it's more than the sum of its parts. Would be a 2, but the hits are great great great.

I'd heard The Rockafeller Skank before (Funk Soul Brother) but didn't know who sang it. I see how it's iconic of a time/era, but I didn't care for it. Essentially zero chance I'd listen again.

Little disappointed after the listen, still pretty good

Reminds me of all the sports video games I played as a kid.

6/5/2021 - Started the 1001 Albums challenge with this one. And what a way to start. The entire point of the challenge is to discover new music and put myself out of my listening comfort zone. Never been the biggest fan of techno(?!) but Rockafeller Skank at the beginning of the album definitely put a nostalgic spin on things. Other favourites from the album - Soul Surfing and Praise You.

Pretty good, I did enjoy it a lot but to me in some ways it hadn't aged well. Still a few bangers though.

More laid back lyrics/beat Don’t really like it 2/5 Songs from the album get repetitive fast

I dont know why but I liked almost every second of it.

Senior year. Loving EDM before I knew what EDM really was...

Great hits and bangers individually but listening to a whole album is hard for me. I love the songs tho, I would realistically give this a 3.5 but on this scale it will have to be a 3

A good if not a touch too long big beat acid/techno album. You can hear a lot of the influence big bet music had on the stuff to come (looking at you dubstep, what you really thought you invented drops in electronic music?). Unfortunately a very good album gets a bit sunk by too much bloat in the middle. Trim off 15 minutes and this is an absolute banger of an album but alas it falls more in the 'hits are great, the rest is a mixed bag' territory.

it was really weird, some of the songs were really competitive and just not good, others were just boring. but some songs were nice 👍

A really good album some great songs on the album contains songs that I would listen to again and again 4/5

Banger, front to back.

jesus this is annoying. sorry :D - i've heard tons of snippets of some of these songs for years, and as it turns out that's as much as i can take. Most of these "songs" start out fine for 10-20 seconds and stay the same throughout, only adding more horribly unimaginative editing or absolutely terrible vocal loops/drones throughout. I do like electronic music but not annoying/repetitive noise that reminds me of old records that were skipping. In my insistence of listening to the entirety of every one of these 1001 albums I kept it on but it was borderline torture. hard hard pass.

I'm giving this a solid 6/10 because while its not really my kinda music, i can appreciate it for what it was at the time it was released. This album had 4 singles in the top 10 around this time while music sampling was starting to get pretty popular. It caught more traction in the UK since thats where Fatboy Slim was based but "Rockefellar Skank" and "Praise you" were both pretty popular singles in the US. When I was in dance class, one of our routines was to the rockefellar skank and that was in like 2003 so it was still pretty popular around then too.

"Right Here, Right Now" is good, I like the violins they incorporated. Hey I know "The Rockafeller Skank" "In Heaven" has a good beat, but not in love with the lyrics. "Ganster Trippin" has a good beat. Not much to the lyrics. I'm finding the album has good beats but no substance to the lyrics. "Build It Up, Tear It Down" is good to work to. "Kalifornia" is a bop. "Soul Surfing" hey, some lyrics! Sort of. "You're Not From Brighton" I was bopping but didn't listen cuz work. "Praise You" hey I know this one too! "Love Island" is the only one that doesn't really seem to fit with the rest. "Acid 8000" ok this one doesn't fit quite with the rest either but I like the techno. Overall I like the album. It doesn't have much in the way of lyrics but it's easy to work to.

Ground-smashing.

Good music, not entirely into electronic.

It was ok, nothing I could listen to every day

me: is Fatboy Slim fucking in heaven? Song:

Qué disco más guapo de electrónica. Praise You me la pongo en bucle, pero además tiene las icónicas Right Here Right Now y Rockafeller Skank. Un gustazo.

Great album. Still makes your feet wanna move. One star off for 'Fucking In Heaven'. That one is annoying.

Massive break beats, very accessible electronic music fused with soul and funk, mostly. Great running soundtracks.

Not good for studying, but I would still say its good music

(I listened to the original album, not the anniversary edition). Good start, Right Here Right Now is a ridiculous classic. 5 star track. Same goes for the 2nd track, Rockerfeller Skank. Ridiculous. 😂. Gangster Tripping a classic too. And Praise You is such a classic. Absolutely frothing 😂 there doesn't seem any way that you wouldn't give this album 5 stars.

Super fun stuff. Could have been a 5, but a little bit of bloat just holds it back.

This is pretty fun, but hard to take seriously because I've heard some of the songs so many times in movies and commercials and stuff. It's like a happier version of The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers.

3-4 really good songs and the rest is just boring

Big beats are the best beats. Get high all the time. Best Tracks: Right Here Right Now, Rockafeller Skank, Praise You

Pelkästään Right Here Right Now'sta ja Rockafeller Skankin nostamista fiiliksistä voisi Pläskipoika Hoikkikselle antaa vitosen. Rockafeller Skank on syöpynyt jonnekin syvälle, koska se oli pleikkarilla FIFA99:n introssa... Right about now, the funk soul brother, check it out now, .... Loppulevyä en Praise You biisiä lukuunottamatta ollut kuullut, eikä levyn muut biisit nyt mitään erityisen sykähdyttäviä olleet. Tai sitten en vaan päässyt yli tymäkän alun nostamasta fiiliksestä. Kuitenkin pelkästään juuri tästä levyn aloituksen ansiosta hyvällä omalla tunnolla perusvahva nelonen (5,8%).

My only prior knowledge to Fatboy Slim was Rockafeller Stank and Weapon of Choice, so when I put on the album and found it wasn't nearly as good as the singles, I was disappointed. Although I'm not familiar with Big Beat or Breakbeat, I feel that there are far better sample-based albums that elevate the samples beyond just selected beats and single lines ("Fatboy Slim is fucking in heaven" is particularly uninspired). A mere two years after this album's release would be The Avalanches' "Since I Left You", a masterclass in plunderphonics; The Funk Sould Brother should take notes. Otherwise this is a perfectly fine album. Pretty good beats but overall not blowing me away or anything.

Het weekend leek al een paar dagen eerder begonnen maar na de hitjes was het voor mij wel klaar.

Couldn't bear to finish it. Had mild hope for You're Note From Brighton because the name is silly, but no. I imagine overdosing on a stimulant is a lot like listening to this album

little repetitious, but lots of funky tunes!

Jaaa, coole plaat!

Voor het eerst eens helemaal en op koptelefoon geluisterd. Wat een geweldenaar! Nothing but hits en supercatchy.

The album feels like an inside joke. Maybe other listeners are in on it, maybe only the artist is in on it. I don't know, but I do know that I most certainly am not in on it. There are parts that I like, but there is no song that I like all the way through. "Rockafeller Skank" is probably my favorite track on the album, but it is almost three minutes too long for my taste. I probably won't listen to any of it again. 2/10.

the singles take me straight back to the 90s but that's probably where they belong. As an album listen its grating.

Classic Norman

A classic. I love The Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin, and Soul Surfing. I wouldn't just listen to the album probably, but it's great party music.

Very good, great flow. Songs were a bit long, but all bangers. Obvi faves were the hits, but You're not from Brighton was a happy surprise :)

Listened to this quite a lot back in the day, but it really hasn't aged well. Sounds like someone made it on a PlayStation. Just a bit silly really

Funky music, meh lyrics. Ultra Funky and Ultra meh.

3.0 - Solid album of breakbeats. Enjoyable enough as high energy background music. Overall, it sounds frozen in 90s UK.

Founding sounds from Fatboy Slim. Skank brings this to a firm 3.

"The Rockafeller Skank" Released: 8 June 1998 "Gangster Tripping" Released: 5 October 1998 "Praise You" Released: 4 January 1999 "Right Here, Right Now" Released: 19 April 1999 "Build It Up – Tear It Down" Released: 15 September 1999

lo moderno se convierte en contemporánea y luego en clásico.

techno is not my thing

finally a new one! I am slightly familiar with his few radio/MTV hits, but this was not what I was looking for when it came out so I ignored him. The first track is already a jam. OK, I know Rockafeller Skank. I always assumed this was called "funk soul brother".

Some songs are good

4.5* way better than i expected and really got me moving

Always liked this album, but the Chemical Brother's Dig Your Own Hole is probably my fave big beat album from the late 90's.

Not a personal favourite. Some good songs but also some very irritating ones.

Real dancey upbeat bops, while the middle blends together a bit the high points outweigh the lows

Bon album techno j’aivraiment aime hehe 4.25*

Sounds like a GTA radio station if they couldn’t get the rights to anything good. Favorite track: “Gangster Trippin”

Definitely not my thing

Artists like this need to shorten their songs. This was almost 2 hours and 19 songs. Each song was the same refrain repeated over and over again. I mean musically it's good, but so goddamn repetitive. Cut 'em in half or write some fucking lyrics, for God's sake!

Drags a little bit but its a stone cold classic.

Feels like this used to be good and hasn't aged well.

Fun record, nostalgic.

It was really claustrophobic

Best of it’s kind. I hate repetition.

So much love for this record. Just awesome.

Spent a lot of time with this one many years ago. Love the energy

Oh man I forgot how much I loved The Rockafeller Skank when it came out. Really feelin it still. OH SHIT I never heard that last 2 minutes, that wasn't on the radio! I am remembering that my mom did not let me get this cd because of the parental advisory, which I understand now after hearing "In Heaven." Some of these songs are kind of stupid, but they are all fun. I really liked "Praise You" back in the day as well.

not for me

Just really good electro-dancepop that is chock full of earworms and bangers. If I would consider the transcendent music videos, if give it another star.

This was a decent album. I'm not so into break beats as I was in the late 90's. But this still had some nostalgic hits ("Rockefeller skank" and "praise you") which made it a nice trip down memory lane.

Even when I was a touch zoned put, I was still bobbing my head along. This is a great album.

Fatboy slim is so fun. RHRN, Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Tripin, Praise You, etc.

I remember when this came out it was like a new drug had been introduced. People reacted differently to it of course, but many, myself included, found it very addictive. Such a punchy, high-contrast sound. Expert layering/structuring of samples that keeps the fun and excitement up throughout.

"The Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You" were the two songs I knew. I heard "Praise You" recently on the radio and didn't know it was FBS and thought it was a new artist, so I think a lot of this has aged well. I especially like the stutter-vocals on Praise You that keeps going for a long time, a technique I am surprised to not hear more often in music honestly. There is a playfulness in the tracks that I really appreciate, it's just fun music but also the breakbeats and DJ-style mixing adds a depth to it. There are some somewhat cheesy 90s sounding acid-techno style squelching synths that feel a bit dated, but this was the 90s. The deluxe edition is a bit too long though, I'd cut it down in half personally. But, that original length album exists, so that's the one I'd listen to as a first time listener. Still really hard for me to rate. It's a 3.5 in terms of enjoyment, but I will round up to 4.

This was rad to play tetris to.

This man is pretty fuckin' creative! I don't usually go in for electronic music, but the blend of real instruments and truly interesting sound effects and beats is pretty fun to hear. Incredible bangers on this album.

Repetitivo demais...

Very nostalgic album for me. Good to listen to in full. I may come back to it at some point.

Great for progressive load trainer rides.

Levotonta menoa. Parit hittibiisit ovat jonkinlaisia moderneja klassikoita, mutta muuten en saa oikein kiinni tästä.

Surprised by how good this was outside of the couple I already knew!

Classic dance music.

Could use a party right about now...

It was fun. I have heard his newer versions of many of these songs. Nice to catch the “originals”

Big beats and big boys. Liked more than I thought I would

Recognized a lot of these songs. Would listen again

And on the day that daft punk breaks up

Check it out now, the funk soul brotha.

I'm uncertain if after listening more i get bored of it or on the contrary will like it more

Some amazing tracks

Good tunes.

90’er dance, bangers, rytmisk, humoristisk

RIGHT ABOUT NOW. Continuing the trend of learning where random one/two hit wonders are. Overall music loops>vocal loops

Two Fatboy Slim albums in one week...oof. Couldn’t finish either.

Sounded like sitting through an hour long Toyota Aygo advert.
