I get the appear, sad songs are sad. Not sure if I needed a whole CD of this though. Much like Leonard Cohen, I'm sure there's lots of good lyrics here but don't have the patience to keep track of it.

Yeah I dunno about this one. I keep flipping between 2.5 and 4 stars.
The middle of the album started to drag / sound same-y and then a Viking song appears out of nowhere? If it wasn't so long then 4 stars. If he didn't play literally every instrument, a 2.5 stars.
Feels like just over a 3 for me,

"At about 2:59 into the song, Clayton's voice cracks under the strain; once during the second refrain on the word "shot", then on the word "murder" during the third refrain, after which Jagger is faintly heard exclaiming "Woo!" in response to Clayton's powerful delivery. Upon returning home, Clayton suffered a miscarriage, attributed by some sources to her exertions during the recording."

Kanye West
5/5
I don't really like listen to rap, but Kanye continues to surprise me on this list. Everything on here has its place, and it gels!
... The only real miss here is 'Monster', and I suspect it is a 'I really don't like Nicki Minaj at all'.
Given this isn't my genre, I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt here. The fact that I'm even considering a 5 here (for a rap album!) means it's gotta take it

Queen

Brimful of Asha is good. At times I get a bit of an Incubus vibe.
It's not terrible, but I don't get what this brings that other bands do better.
Pavement
4/5
I used to listen to this album a lot, but it fell off my radar after University. Nice to have this come back into my life
Is it a 5? Probably not. But I'll let it loop a few times before I move to the next CD, if only for nostalgia's sake. 🍺
5-4=Unity's sampling of "Take Five" -> Feels good.
John Lee Hooker
4/5
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
Meh, This is a low-3 for me. I am okay with the beats / layering / vibe here, but not a fan of the singer.
Tempted to give a 2 here, but a little more impressive there's only 2 people here doing this.

2/5
I get why this is here, there's a lot of layers here to unwind, and there's the semblance that the band doesn't really care what you think.
Not for me. Maybe just don't have the patience today. Or maybe it's just not very good.
MGMT
3/5
I remember listening to this CD a lot during University. Electric Feel / Kids is a very solid 1-2 punch. Time to pretend is okay. The rest of the CD is meh, even through the nostalgia glasses. I expected more here, and didn't get it.
Van Halen
5/5
3/5
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2/5
OK, so they re-arranged some classical music, put it onto a live album, and then released it?

This is the exact kind of country that I hated before listening to this playlist. Nothing's changed so far.

I don't know what's going on here. Every time I think that it's complete trash, they go off and do something just a little bit different and I'm back into it. Every time I'm back into it, they change again and it's back to being trash. Ave Gengis Khan itself does this about 6 different times.
At the end of it all, I feel thrashed and tired.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Steely Dan
3/5
Metallica
5/5
Hauntingly beautify.
Battery / Master of Puppets is a strong 1-2 opener. Lots of energy throughout the album. Orion is a fantastic interlude so that we can finish out strong with Damage Inc.
This is a low 5 for me

4.5 - Fought myself for a while on this one. Big fan of Rush and have heard this CD before, so trying to weigh against my existing biases.
The Camera Eye s the only one that lags behind the bar, but it's 1/4th of the album! It's still a good song, but Rush sets a high bar.
In the end, there's too much good stuff on here.

Talking Heads
2/5
This whole album feels like an inside joke that I've heard once that I was never really a part of.

Clearly Side B doesn't keep up with Side A, but that's hard to do when you're trying to keep up with War Pigs / Paranoid / Iron Man.
This is a 4.5 for me, rounding up today.
Metallica
3/5
Look, I don't listen to a lot of Metallica. Their hits are great: Master of Puppets, One, Battery, Enter Sandman, Nothing else matters etc. etc.. I'll admit that I like more of their melodic stuff as opposed to their metal (if you can even distinguish between the two)
But... did anything really happen between Master of Puppets and their first intermission? Feels like they slogged through the first half of the concert. Which is fine, I guess, maybe you need to be a bigger Metallica fan to appreciate it?
And what does the orchestra add here? There's a ton of opportunity to do something different with their songs. Instead it feels a lot like a giant cover of their own songs. And the orchestra needs to be structured, so you really lose the freedom / improv that you would normally have without them there.
So, you've got a 2h album that is at least 40m of filler (the other half is fairly decent, but wouldn't you rather listen to the originals?), and an orchestra which is playing really well, but doesn't add anything. Not sure how we can go higher than 3 here.
The exception to all of this would be One and The Call of Ktulu. Very well done!

A CD about Adele's high school sweetheart break-up. Luckily at 21 she has lots of time to find true love. /s
In all seriousness, this is a good CD.

Glad I went the 40m route.
Ace of Spaces (great!), followed by a bunch of lesser clones (meh). Capricorn stands out as being a little different than the rest (in a good way)
Would this album been better if we had looped all of their live versions of Ace of Spades over and over? Frankly It'd probably sounds just about the same.

There is some good things in here, and there is some complete trash in here. You have to respect the range in music types in here, but overall it feels messy more than anything else
Could also be that I'm biased against Rap too...

An easy reminder that this isn't supposed to be the best 1001 albums ever ;)
Look, in all honesty these guys are playing hard and fast, and that takes some skill. Anytime it seems like they are about to get into their rhythm and do something, they either abruptly end the song or they've got vocals that are basically impossible to understand or listen to.
Does their talent give them a second star? Not today

Every time I think this album is going to do something interesting, it disrupts the groove and switches beats.
2.5, going to round up here because I suspect there are layers I am missing here.

Keep going back and forth on this one, started bad, until I started really listening to the words and the emotions trying to be conveyed here.
On second listen, it turns out that I really dislike the first two songs. The rest of the album is good. Not great, but good.
Let's call it a 4, with two really bad songs weighing it down a star

3.5 - Going to assume that I've got a bias against bluegrass and round up.
This would be an easy 4 if it wasn't 2h+ long. But I get that this is more of a "piece of history" rather than an album you put on and listen to.
