I don’t mind some metal but this album really isn’t for me.

Tongue firmly in cheek, but the music is dead solid

Maybe the shittiest metal album I have heard in a long time.

Sångaren är ganska störande och hans bars suger och är ointressanta... gillar hur smutsig musiken känns dock.

It’s a little bit silly (ok it’s very silly) and objectively the songs are not very good and the whole thing sounds like it was recorded in their bathroom. But as massive fan of 80s thrash metal I cannot ignore the influence this album had on that genre. And it’s fun too.

Dated and boring NWOBHM. I can appreciate the scenes it set the foundations for but no fun to listen to

Je reconnais l'apport de cet album au genre, mais n'ayant aucune nostalgie vis à vis celui-ci, tout ce que j'entend c'est du metal médiocre :-/ Plusieurs disent que le black metal est né avec cet album, mais c'est aussi loin du black metal moderne que Sugarhill Gang l'est de la trap music.

I think this an example of influenced better than influencer. With that being said this album is still pretty fire.

One for the historically important rather than good pile. I get why it's an album that matters, but in and of itself it's a pretty poorly performed metal album with very little to recommend it, and it lays the satanic imagery on so thickly that to modern ears it sounds comedic.

I hate this album

Venom were one of the first to do it and helped influence and create genres of metal that followed to this day. Got to respect them for that, but I don't have to like 'em! I mean, I appreciate this album for its role and all, but it will never be a frequent visit for me to listen to. Though, I could say that for a lot of metal, for me personally, I suppose. Don't @ me, bro...

Oh Dear! Really not one for me this. I am sure some will find it worthy but not for me.

I was enjoying this until I got to "Teacher's Pet," which made me barf. Scarier than all the naff black metal stuff.

Odd transitions, and regurgitated lyrics but as an early metal album it sets the stage

Lyrics leave a lot to be desired but honestly not as bad as I thought it would be

I didn't realise the genre was named after an album, that's pretty cool. Probably influential, but if I want to listen to some thrash/black metal there are plenty of other things I'd go to first

Even as a metal head this was kind of a tough listen. The production is bad (something the genre it would inspire would take to heart), and the songs blend together pretty hard after a while. "Teacher's Pet" is... just a weird addition here, as well. Favorite track: "Don't Burn the Witch"

1982. Venom's second album. The first proto-black metal album! This one inspired a lot of trash and death bands in early 90-s. Black Metal song has been covered dozen of times (more than 100)!

Sorta just sounds like every other metal album, or at the very least a generic and basic one. Didn't really capture my attention at any point. It may be influential to future metal albums, but why not show those that innovated on the genre further instead?

This is really early black metal, but to a point it sounds a little bit corny. I'm not sure if that was the intent, or that they're the inspiration for that sound. Guitars can be pretty dark and the drums get plenty heavy for an enjoyable black metal experience, but it's also not my favorite/most versed in genre. Highlights: 3, 7, and 10.

If you're going to write an hour's worth of thrift store Metallica songs about hell, you should at least make them sound different from one another.

Mad to me that this was known as black metal back in the day, just sounds like skate thrash to me, similar to some hardcore I grew up listening to. I always thought black metal would be more twiddly guitar shit. Seems influential, sounds nostalgic. 3/5

Good early thrash. The influence on Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and other 80s thrash pioneers is present.

The sound this band has is great, albeit a little repetitive. I like the song titles.

I suppose that if you were 14 years old and missed the first wave of metal and punk was more your older brother's type of music, you could call this your own. But I have serious reservations about any non-teenagers still listening to, or admitting to listening to, this. I see that, of the 1001 albums it's got the #994 spot all locked up.

In the movies you see the Americans torturing their POWs by blasting death metal at them while they’re chained up in the dark. Pretty sure this would be effective as a torture device as it makes me want to slit my wrists.

This was like a technically gifted school child was given a task to write a 'metal' album. A complete load of unimaginative rubbish.

I'm not the biggest metal fan but can appreciate some of it. This was just shit from start to finish though

Not into metal. I find metal bass playing hilarious as well because it contributes nothing to the situation. This is beyond cheesy! It’s like cliche devil horns and eyeliner. Maybe it’s ground breaking for current metal bands but I don’t know enough about the genre to comment. The front man looks like Jayo Dunphy’s ma.

This was less painful than I expected. Wouldn't listen again, but I didn't hate it.

In the early ’80’s, I was riding with the Hell’s Angels and selling PCP in Bakersfield. I listened to this record ALL. THE. TIME. Nowadays, I need a pint of virgin blood and a nap halfway thru to make it through the album once. There’s lots of noise here on this album and the devil lyrics are on high. As a matter of fact, the lyrics are where this Black Metal shines. Who can dismiss “do you believe in God, he’s chained up like a dog and every hour he screams 'SATAN RULES SUPREME!" ?? [whoa!] And, though there's nothing fancy about the drumming, the guitar is show-y, fast and intricate at times. As a matter of fact, this band makes me think a lot of TSO. Yep, TSO - The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I’m quite certain these Venom guys could’ve been real competition to the TSO if the devil-worshiping thing ever caught on. There are plenty of similarities between the two. Both are rock’n’roll crusaders for a higher power and tolerable in small doses, played ONLY during special occasions. For example, TSO, is often heard during Christmas season, while Venom's Black Metal, I'm assuming, gets a lot of play during sacrificing your first-born or throwing a surprise birthday party for Lucifer. Two stars.

Thrash metal. Screaming and loud - very big. Would be great to lift to. Solid melody. Fast drums. Solid guitar. It must be boring to write all your songs about exactly the same thing. A clear setup for Metallica.

This feels like something I would listen to if I was riding motorcycles and selling PCP. But I respect the album, I can for sure feel the influence of this album. It's got some pretty rad guitars and the lyrics are pretty metal. Full on Satan. I don't mind it at all.

There is lots of decent or even good metal out there. Why is this on the list? (So that was my first reaction. Then I read up on it, and apparently they were really pioneers of several sub-genres of metal in the late 70s-early 80s. And so like with the Brian Eno stuff, part of why they merit inclusion on this list is the influence they had on what came after? In that case, do I boost their rating based on the impact they had? Do I rate the music in a vacuum, based totally on what I hear? Or do I rate it based on its historical context?)

I guess this music must have a place for somebody. Not for me.

Some of the industrial music on this list is worse but not by much.

If the intention of the album was to make one wish to be buried alive, left in hell, or sacrificed, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Some decent metal in here somewhere, but it was totally drowned out by the almost parody-like lyrics (SATAN!) and terrible sound recording quality.

The closing line of Black Metal (Radio 1 Session) is “Welcome to hell!” An apt line to describe listening to this album, which I did twice. This is the type of album a bunch of goth kids who turned into goth adults make, yet they didn’t realize the goth stage was supposed to end. I understand clearly that they are obsessed with death. I did find myself bobbing to the guitar riff on Don’t Burn the Witch. I thought Buried Alive was kind of funny although I don’t think it was meant to be. In the end, I just don’t have enough teen angst to enjoy much about this album.

When it comes to death metal as a genre, I'm about as qualified to judge it as I am to judge a German creative writing competition. Yet here I am, listening to this record called Black Metal, and I'll just say that I don't speak German. So maybe it can be evaluated by historical significance or influence? If so, the shitty production and lyrics about mutant babies and high-fiving demons aren't doing it any favors. It's the musical equivalent of a plotless B-movie gore-fest. I guess sometimes you just want to see some blood, but do you really need to sit through so much of it? This is a long-winded way of saying I didn't like it, it sounded like the work of a bad high-school band who don't have any life experiences to write about.

I'm not super interested in heavy metal music, but this album started the entire subculture of thrash and black metal. It was fun to listen to and was entertaining.

What became synonymous with the Black Metal genre, this album shows the transition point from Hard Rock and Metal to a darker side.

Alright music, I think vocals were the weakest part. Gotta give it credit though, there's an entire genre of music named after this album.

Most start with good riff, but then it's lost in muddy production and thrashing. Not my taste.

Eine No-Budget Produktion, der Eingangssound stammt vom Zersägen einer Tür. Das Album gab dem Genre seinen Namen. Metal ist trotzdem nicht so meins, es finden sich ein paar nette Riffs und wenns Mal melodiöser wird, finde ich es ab und zu ganz lustig. Hat wohl am ehesten historischen Wert, auf Albumlänge nervt die schlechte Produktion und für den nicht Metal-Gurmet etwas eintönig.

I mean, what? It sounds very thin and tinny, for what should be HEAVY BLACK METAL. Probably important if you're into that scene, and not a band I'd ever heard of before.

Hatte etwas mehr erwartet, fand ich jetzt nicht so spektakulär. Habe mich aber auch nicht weiter dazu informiert und es ist wirklich nicht meine Musik ;)

This is more METAL than I expected. I can see why it's an important album. It's not the style of metal I like, but I can hear it in modern music. I love how over the top it is. Teachers pet is hilarious. If heard this in high school I think I would have loved it.

No thank you. Actually, some of the less thrashy parts of this aren't horrible. The guitar solo in Teacher's Pet is actually pretty cool.

I don't enjoy metal at all, so I was glad when this one was over. I can see how it is a good example of the genre, though.

What a ridiculous album. It didn’t seem very good. The songs were trash and it was very underproduced. Will need to read up on it to see what historical merits it has.

This isn't a very good album. The music is slow (for metal) and not a heavy as you might like. The lead singer doesn't sing so much as gravely speak the lyrics, which also seem to lack any sort of flow.

Another perfect album for Fat Riff Friday. The blues bridge on Teachers Pet was sick but Sacrifice is my highlight. Also Heavens on Fire sounds suspiciously similar to Ace of Spades
