Heavy metal, like Rap, is beyond my understanding of what music should be. I didn't waste my time listening to this.

Ah, so this is the music that Spinal Tap was making fun of. Got it. I don’t mind heavy metal, but this album is just hell and death on every song, with guttural yells in place of singing. I couldn’t wait for it to end.

Horrible

Just annoying

Discounting Hissing Sids, venom means to me a spiteful malicious feeling or extreme ill will which describes my view of this lot and this album. 1/5 23/6/25

As I listened to (all of) this album I thought maybe the app should be re-named “1001 albums to listen to before you complete puberty”.

Pretty terrible. I should have loved this but it just wasn't there. Admittedly, I only listened to the first few songs so it may have gotten better? But I doubt it.

Influential album, but I don't like metal at all and I don't like this album. It's satanic, the drumming is bad, the production is just weak. There is nothing to like here. p.s. about the bad lyrics: in "Countess Bathory" the charges against her have been described by historians as a witch-hunt, and its purpose was to destroy her family's influence in the region. She was a powerful noblewoman and her family was a big threat to big empires, like the Habsburgs. The lyrics are just silly and often satanic.

Obnoxious, unnecessary and generally shit kind of music. Go away.

Not worth my effort typing out a review

Rather unpleasant

In a nutshell: the genre had to start somewhere (shoulder shrug) Can definitely hear the Motörhead influence. Is it me or does the frontman (Conrad) sound like Otto from The Simpsons? Overall: 2/10

The recording sounds so so weak.

Always amazing at the diversity of music people are able to enjoy.

This is the hundred twelfth album I’m rating. I haven't listened to a lot of metal so I'm looking forward to this album. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Black Metal, To Hell and Back, Buried Alive, Raise the Dead, Teacher's Pet, Leave me in Hell, Sacrifice, Heaven's on Fire, Countless Bathory, Don't Burn the Witch, and At War with Satan (Preview). All in all I liked 0/11 songs. I hate Black Metal. Awful awful genre.

This album was horrible unless you were a satanist, I guess.

A real head scratcher

Well that was awful. Y’all need Jesus. TBH in a lot of this album it was kinda cheesy, felt very much like they wanted to seem super hardcore so they included a bunch of satan worship. This was trash.

Terrible

This is why people think metal is a joke. Nothing about this feels genuine or authentic. This is all a performance. Every single song title invokes some kind of horrible imagery, and brings to mind images of despair, violence, or else some kind of twisted concept. And I know, I KNOW, I can hear you saying - "but that's the point! It's supposed to be over the top, it's supposed to be shocking!" Sorry, I don't care. When every song is just relentlessly about the same thing, and when the thing feels so goddamn performative that it definitely isn't authentic, I just don't care. I have no belief that the guys in this band are Satan worshipers. Like, sorry but I cannot imagine people living their lives like that. It's an image, and it's a really shaky one. Maybe that doesn't matter to metalheads, but it's never sat well with me when a band writes lazy ass lyrics about worshiping Satan or whatever. Like at least try to be creative with your lyrics, regardless of the topic. One star. Standout Track: Black Metal

Blows chunks

Weer zo'n vaag, nietszeggend album. 1.4

Apparently this was a trailblazing hard core speed metal offering. As much as I like heavy metal, the grim, dark nature of the themes is a bit much for me. I won’t be listening to this again.

This spot really should/could have gone to someone more deserving, like, say, Liberace, or the Chipmunks.

Schlock. Over the top satanism with bad music. I like metal, and this is kinda just noise around edgy lyrics.

Ooooof, definitely my least liked genre. Spoiler alert: these guys aren't black. The lyrics are hysterical, actually. It's like they asked ChatGPT to write shock-value satanic verse in the voice of a troubled 12-year old boy. I'm gonna pass but thanks for sharing your anger.

not a lot of redeemable qualities here

This sounded like every lame metal album I've ever heard. Did it basically create this genre or something? Cool I guess, but still not interested.

Based on the album name alone, I knew this was going to be a MASSIVE struggle. And boy was I right. I don’t care if this is influential, it’s horrible.

36/1001 As someone who spent my first couple of years as a guitar player locked in my room trying to learn widdly-widdly solos, mistakenly thinking the end goal was to become some kind of Steve Vai guitar hero, I have listened to a lot of metal albums. This is not one of them - and I wasn't missing anything. It's puerile, repetitive, and musically really rather dull.

Too black for me. Dnf.

Lay down your soul to the gods rock and roll/Metal tenfold through the deadly black hole/Riding Hell's stallions bareback and free/Taking our chances with raw energy/Come ride the night with us, rock hard and fight/United my legions we stand/Freak hard and wild for us, give up your souls/Live for the quest Satan's band It's gonna be one star for me Clive.

Cringe

Okay don’t get me wrong. I like rock but not like this.

There’s a difference between music and loud sounds. This just convinces me more about how much hard metal is not my type of music genre.

I don’t like metal and this is no exception

A slog - that I did not finish. Sounds like a demo tape. Surprisingly for metal the vocals are very clear and so unfortunately can hear all the nonsense that they are singing / shouting aback.

A group of edgelords made an awful album

Nah non fa per me

Not for me.

in fairness, the "get your tits out for the lads" bit is fucken hilarious

I wish the people who made this album discovered therapy before they made this mistake. Unfortunately, they are now just goths who live in their mom's basement and worship Satan. If you can't tell, I think this album is trash!

This is great said no one ever.

Only listened to one song but not my kind of thing at all. Probably okay live but not at midday on a Monday. 2/10

horrible, hate it though only listened to first song ( and im DONE )

The only way I could tell it wasn't a single, incredibly monotonous song was by the occasional youtube ad (and the 'video paused, are you still watching' message about 2/3 of the way through). It doesn't say much for this album that I actually started looking forward to the ads as highlights. I've enjoyed a lot of other metal albums on this list, so it's not a musical preference thing - this was just a shit album. I intentionally didn't listen to the last couple of tracks so I could give it 1 star - a kind of musical opposite to a chef's kiss, a chef's punch? a clef's punch?

Shitty metal album. I could not get through it

Tuffa och arga grabbar!

No thanks

Not for Chad.

Not for me

Wow - that was painful.

saw the song teacher's pet, looked somewhat promising 30 seconds in: "teacher's pet, teacher's pet, teacher's wet" oh hell nah

Espera aí, num tem necessidade de colocar uma versão estendida do disco, não tem como seguir com mais de 30 minutos com as tentativas de ser pesado, que fica enfadonho.

Well, I sure thought THAT was horrible! I guess if you’re into devil worship, you might like this, but otherwise… Anyway, is it possible to give an album zero stars? I would’ve been able to tolerate this, if not for the so-called singing and lyrics, but I suppose that’s a lot of the appeal for its audience. I did make myself listen to at least one minute or so of each of the songs. Needless to say, this is just not for me.

No. It just hurts.

I thought this was awful. It reminded me of a technically proficient high school band of misfits whose singer owned the mics and PA so he got to be the vocalist.

Crap sounding like crap

This sucked - it was not good. Sometimes when I get the squirts it sounds better than this.

No. Trash.

Eew metal

Not my genre

Ja ok, es hat ein ganzes Metal-Genre beeinflusst. Wenn nicht sogar gestartet. Meinetwegen. Trotzdem nur organisierter Lärm.

Goth kids in the '80s probably ate this shit up. All the hell, satan, demon talk got old reeeally fast. Every song sounded so similar and repetitive. There were a couple cool guitar solos, but that's it Also the production quality is absolute trash. Maybe that's just the style of the music. I'm sure Venom was genre-defining in the 80s, but this album does not hold up today imo.

Id love to know people who like this album… mainly so i can put them on a list and stay as far away from them as possible.

It does sound really terrible. so hard to listen to. They couldn’t fix this mix?

The words are quiet and the instrumentals are loud. I tried listening to it really loud. I didn't really feel it and it didn't work for me.

Got half way through... Good guitar Shut music

No thanks. 1/5

I hope to never hear it again

Well that was an album.

Still trying to like black and thrash metal, still not.

Somewhere... Dante Alighieri is rolling over in his grave.

not enough devil worshipping

My ears are bleeding. Not a fan

It's like Judas Priest, but without most of the good stuff, and mixed to sound like it was recorded in any empty underground garage with a single mic a couple of levels away. Wikipedia says it's an extremely influential album for various sub-genres of metal. Good to know (so I can avoid those sub-genres). Honestly, much like the sound mix, each song sorta blended together into a muddy pit. I actually completely missed the transition from "Black Metal" into "To Hell and Back" and yet didn't realize I was listening to a different song. What's up with the last song on the album being called "At War With Satan (Preview)"? And it fades out mid-song? Is it like an after the end-credits scene at the end of a Marvel movie that sets up the next one? I did find the song Teacher's Pet interesting and I'm glad Van Halen "payed homage" to it and made a much, much better version. (if you tell me they hadn't heard this song, I call BS) . For whoever this hits in the right place, I'm glad it exists, but it's not for me.

N O P E …

I tried two songs. It's just not my thing.

Once I finish this I will never ever listen to this again. It's crap. Why is the production so so bad?

i don’t have the enough angst to enjoy this. I’m also not 18 and living in a house with parents I hate in suburbia where no one gets me

So these guys are to blame?

These guys do not sound good

I did not hear any music, just satanic noise. Not my cup of tea, but others may enjoy.

Sorry, not sorry

You ever look at an album cover and say I don't need to listen to that? I just did.

Will never understand what makes metal music I would want to listen to. If I want energetic guitar music, I prefer the 'noise' like Foetus or the rhythms of early Velvet Underground, or Pixies or e.g. Viagra Boys. But this is just boring rhythms with boring singing and so on. Bless those who like this, I don;t

Album 424 of 1001 Venom - Black Metal Rating : 1 / 5 This is actually one of those satan worshipping records your parents warned you about. They get right to the point. Even with the subject matter aside, it pretty much sucks.

I feel bad for giving low ratings just because I don't like a particular genre of music, but for my own sake, I need to know to stay FAR, FAR AWAY from this! 1 star!

We have Megadeth at home:

Terrible

Don’t like the mix me don’t like the music

Yeah not going to lie this was pretty bad. Gets plus one star for the unintentionally funny lyrics

Best case Iron Maiden, worst case Slipknot. Nope.

really did not enjoy 1/5

Guitars were decent. Disliked the voice of the lead singer and the songs in general. Not a fan of extreme metal.

singen kann der "Sänger" jedenfalls nicht; dann doch lieber Rap

Eigenlijk kan ik niet veel anders dan dit soort muziek enorm puberaal vinden. O, kijk mij eens eng doen.

There's plenty of good metal missing in this book. Then you have shitty metal like this turd of an album that's in it. Yes I know it's a parody but then put Spinal Tap in here instead. At least they were funny. This was plain idiotic.

You couldn’t make this shit up

not4me

I was looking forward to listening to this....but it was awful! It reminded me of a comedy spoof band called Bad News: a deluded, self important group thinking they were much better than they were. However, Bad News was actually better than this! (Give Bad News a listen, it's worth it!) Really disappointed in this :(

Too much anger, not really music.

Laehlll - Get Me Out of Hell. Wait, didn’t I just hear this song? That took a lot of energy (to listen to, never mind make). An hour+ of the same thrashing song about hell and Satan. Didn’t like it, will avoid Venom in music and real life. (0.4*s)

Not for me

I guess this must be here because of it's influence rather than the merits of the music itself because it doesn't have many reasons to be on this list based on the music itself. High 1.

I prefer metal with better guitar riffs. This being early death metal, I can understand the lack of depth in the instrumentals. Sounded a little over dramatic and too much bloody hands in hell. Not my bag.

Why must I hear this before I die? I can just wait 'til after I'm dead and listen to it during an eternity in hell. Terrible vocal style and lyrics spoil what might otherwise have been some mediocre Motorhead tracks. For teenage boys only.

That's a nope from me. 1/5

Nope. It may be influential, but not in a good way.

Mucho metal

On the plus side, it seems like This is Spinal Tap and Tenacious D wouldn't exist without albums like this. On the minus side, most of this was headache-inducing. If there was a special classification of one-star metal albums for me, this would be toward the top of the pile. I can understand the lyrics, some of the guitar sounds pretty cool. But, like, attempts to sound hardcore and scary are ultimately sort of lame.

It's too loud and I listened too early in the morning.

It’s such a fine line between stupid, and uh... clever. Bailed before the first track had finished. Shocking.

The worst album yet, after 146 days. It has all the worst elements of metal, but with one additional factor: you can actually hear the lyrics. Oh good! Let's see if actually metal singers have deep thoughts and emotions when it isn't just screaming. Wait. Why does he keep saying 'doth' and singing about trolls and goblins or whatever? Is he 14 and a nerd? Hang on, this one's a misogynist, back-seat-of-the-bus giggle about fancying your teacher. That's a gear switch. WHY IS THE NEXT ONE ANOTHER DOTH ONE? Genuinely makes you think that castrating all teenage boys is probably the best way to save the planet.

Not my cup of satanic tea

They also triggered the whole *rock-revival* wave, and this almost singlehandedly. And so on. There's probably a dozen of other similar examples left, and of course, there will be many other ones in the future. What about Venom's *Black Metal*, then? Surely, with an album title like that, it has spawned new generations of long-haired lovers of heavy riffs and extreme-sounding vocal ! Well, parts of the album's horror Z-movie-level Satanist imagery, clearly parodic here, might indeed have been influential for a few Scandinavian bands, most of them filled with naive teenagers who didn't have a clue all of this was mostly in jest. And yes indeed, parts of the objectively *terrible* music might have have been listened to by those same teenagers. So yes on both counts. The thing is, said music is so badly composed, so badly performed, and so badly recorded that it's just impossible to take it seriously in 2023. And more importantly, *most metal fans out there* don't take this music seriously either today!!! At least that's what my usual impressions about this band tell me, and the reviews in here mostly confirm them. You have literally dozens and dozens and dozens of album categorized in the same subgenres as Venom that have been recorded since 1982, and you can bet your boots they sound better than this pile of hot garbage. Plus, musically speaking, *Black Metal* isn't really "black metal". It's very much trash metal / speed metal and the likes. There's no high-pitched shrieking and the riffs are too slow. It's only the Satan thing that can make you tie this act with later ones using that same "brand'. And well... that Satan thing wasn't even invented by Venom. The Bible invented it, did it not? 😉 So even as a first example of a precise subgenre--no matter how good or bad that example is--this album doesn't hold water. Very few people enjoy it now, it has no "objective" merits, and the influence it might have had--stemming on a misunderstanding anyway--has little to no relevance in the long run. So next, please. Number of albums left to review: 336 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 299 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 161 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 213

Not my vibe

Couldn't stand the vocals at all. A few decent guitar solos, but that was it. Wouldn't listen to again. Min 1 out of 5

Dog shit bad

They really lean into the heavy death satanic metal theme. If they weren't pioneers of the genre I'd think they were a parody band.

This album sucks. I wouldn’t call myself a metal aficionado, but the vocals were bad, the instrumentals were uninspiring, and the production made it sound worse. DNF.

I do not like metal, and this did not change that. Struggled to get through this one.

Pas écouté en entier

I tried…could not get past the first song. Does it get better? I’ll never know.

Ég gaf Sepulturu eina stjörnu. Sem er synd, því ég myndi vilja gefa þessu mun lægri einkunn. Það jákvæðasta sem ég get sagt er að ég næ ekki nokkurri tengingu við þetta.

not interested

Just pretty boring angry metal, my least favorite kind of metal.

Not what I needed first thing in the morning

Horrible music. Did not get half way through the first song.

What's going on with the terrible production?

I think I just really don’t like metal

This shit SUCKS like actually i really don't like this kind of music couldn't even finish the thing. I'm not even sorry, screw you Venom

Not a big fan of this album, I feel like all the songs sounds similar. The instrumentals were good just not in love with the vocals.

I listened to 20 seconds of the first track, then 20 seconds of the second, and got the gist. C’mon…

Not a good album. I just can't do metal like this. 1/5

29th June 2023 Listened a day late throughout the day. Was in London for GD town hall. god this was a slog.

Is that Meg White on drums? This really isn't very good. I don't care if it's influential, the album itself is shit. Most of it sounds like that track on Dead Letter Office when REM were pushing about. I was expecting thrash. I didn't enjoy any of the songs, nor did I think it was musically good but just not for me. Hence it's a one star, sorry, those are the rules. Also, why does it end with a long intro to a song which then immediately fades out? Daft.

Seriously? This guy's voice is terrible and the songs are so basic. Devil rock? So cliche. I grew up listening to heavy metal. This is weak by most any standard. Worse, it keeps people from giving metal a chance. Maybe this album is on the list because it is early in the development of the genre? If not, I'm not sure why it's among the others.

Did not enjoy at all. Basic and boring. Listened to the end to see if my opinion would change. Wish I hadn't bothered.

Venom are still touring because Satan doesn't want them stinking up Hell with this terrible racket.

First listen Saved 1/11 Top track: Black Metal

That just felt silly

I had a root canal once.

God no

Just about every song sounded the same.

The production on this album is terrible which apparently is supposed to be part of its appeal? I don't get it. The lyrics are pretty edgy and hardcore, but I guess I just don't care about black metal. I am an atheist, too, so it's not the lyrical content that bothers me, it just doesn't really get me hyped for some reason, and I think that's what the artists were going for, so it missed the mark. The instrumentation seemed pretty generic to me and the vocals were just meh. I think part of it might've been the lack of production, but I don't know. I just didn't like it. Quiet the opposite, actually, which is why I give it 1 star.

Wow that was hard work. And this is a rough week.

Worse than awful.

Not very good

Aesthetically metal just is something that interests me from its emphasis on technicality over tune or it’s occult/satanic lyrical themes (boring and unrelatable). I can get a kick out of novelty stuff (Bodycount) or musically undeniable stuff (prime Metallica) but this is neither. They’ve more in common musically with hardcore like Black Flag than power metal, but unfortunately the lyrics are just as dumb as power metal. Look, I don’t buy the existence of satan, and I’m not convinced these guys do either; but they’re more than happy to sell it.

Didn't like wouldn't listen again

Made it through 2 songs. No.

Nope. Not a fan.

Not at all my style

Too boring.

It's not even black metal. What we get instead is absolute trash.

This album made me wonder if I actually like metal as much as I thought I did. Favorite track: Don't Burn the Witch

No thanks

Not for me.

The music actually isn't so bad, but I can't get on board with the screaming vocals, it's all just a bit tedious.

Oy Gevalt!

Zero Pleeaaase can I give this a big fat 0? They should feel ashamed!

Everything about this album from the title to the name of the band to the album art to every single track title sounds like the workings of an angsty teenager who thinks everyone is afraid of him but really everyone is just embarrassed for him.

I understand its influential but it's all a bit silly. Spinal Tap in real life. All the Satanism stuff is a bit daft but Teachers Pet has lyrics that defy reading. It's a dumb and difficult album to finish as its so tiresome. Double finger horns! Shite. 1

Puf, encima todas parecen iguales.

corny.

Metal 🤷

Did not finish as am not a thrash fan sorry I am unchic.

satan soundscapes and guitar solos

No….just no

Ugh. Disliked every minute of it.

Forgettable. Feels like it's trying too hard to be edgy

Utter pish from start to finish, couldn't bear it.

This was unintentionally hilarious, it's so Spinal Tap. I'm guessing this was the first in the genre? I actually like more modern black metal but this hasn't aged well. I especially found it funny that all the solos were standard rock and roll, clearly no one had taught them the evil sounding scales all metal bands use now

Lay down your soul to the gods rock and roll!

Metal nonsense!

Thrash Metal. No thanks

Pioneers, sure. But this really sounded like some high school kids flailing away. Yikes. Didn't even think of adding.

Hilariously shit

Занятный бредок

I don’t mind some metal but this album really isn’t for me.

Maybe the shittiest metal album I have heard in a long time.

One for the historically important rather than good pile. I get why it's an album that matters, but in and of itself it's a pretty poorly performed metal album with very little to recommend it, and it lays the satanic imagery on so thickly that to modern ears it sounds comedic.

I hate this album

Oh Dear! Really not one for me this. I am sure some will find it worthy but not for me.

Not my thing at all

lyssnade en låt men det var såklart inte min kopp te

To use their own song titles to cover this: To Hell and Back (except I didn't come back), (I'd rather be) Buried Alive, Leave Me in Hell (or at least somewhere this isn't playing), (This is a) Nightmare.

This is dumb

Not a big fan but definitely can see it's impact at the time

Didn't even try to listen

Sorta just sounds like every other metal album, or at the very least a generic and basic one. Didn't really capture my attention at any point. It may be influential to future metal albums, but why not show those that innovated on the genre further instead?

1/5 yet another metal album that failed me

If you're going to write an hour's worth of thrift store Metallica songs about hell, you should at least make them sound different from one another.

In the movies you see the Americans torturing their POWs by blasting death metal at them while they’re chained up in the dark. Pretty sure this would be effective as a torture device as it makes me want to slit my wrists.

I'm not the biggest metal fan but can appreciate some of it. This was just shit from start to finish though

Not the worst metal album I have heard, quite surprised I could understand the vocalist but wish I couldn't quite childish and crap

Absolutely awful, unlistenable, best thing about this album is the artwork, and that's saying something

Not my thing.

I guess this music must have a place for somebody. Not for me.

Some of the industrial music on this list is worse but not by much.

If the intention of the album was to make one wish to be buried alive, left in hell, or sacrificed, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

The closing line of Black Metal (Radio 1 Session) is “Welcome to hell!” An apt line to describe listening to this album, which I did twice. This is the type of album a bunch of goth kids who turned into goth adults make, yet they didn’t realize the goth stage was supposed to end. I understand clearly that they are obsessed with death. I did find myself bobbing to the guitar riff on Don’t Burn the Witch. I thought Buried Alive was kind of funny although I don’t think it was meant to be. In the end, I just don’t have enough teen angst to enjoy much about this album.

When it comes to death metal as a genre, I'm about as qualified to judge it as I am to judge a German creative writing competition. Yet here I am, listening to this record called Black Metal, and I'll just say that I don't speak German. So maybe it can be evaluated by historical significance or influence? If so, the shitty production and lyrics about mutant babies and high-fiving demons aren't doing it any favors. It's the musical equivalent of a plotless B-movie gore-fest. I guess sometimes you just want to see some blood, but do you really need to sit through so much of it? This is a long-winded way of saying I didn't like it, it sounded like the work of a bad high-school band who don't have any life experiences to write about.

Most start with good riff, but then it's lost in muddy production and thrashing. Not my taste.

Is that supposed to be the devil on the front? Oh do fuck off. And buy some fucking deodorant whilst your at it. 1/5

Dog shit.

I don't enjoy metal at all, so I was glad when this one was over. I can see how it is a good example of the genre, though.

Glad to have heard it, doubt I'll listen again.

horrível. soa como adolescente querendo ser legal

I’m not the target demographic to be fair

Nope. I get the significance, and I understand how this album was important for a whole genre of music. It's just not going to work for me. I suffered through this album.

I tried. Really not my thing.

1982. Key Songs: Don't Burn The Witch

i feel like i’ve been cursed
