meh. Like metal but this didn't do it for me. Can see it being a big step forward for metal though.

Mag iets meer melodisch en bombastisch

Interesting history, but the quality is really bad.

I’m not a fan of heavy metal so I couldn’t truly appreciate this album.

Musicianship was fine, just lyrically not my thing and it was a bit too grungy.

While I appreciate the influence this album has certainly had, I don't think Venom will ever be my cup of tea. The songs bordered on satirical. Maybe they are? Also, I wonder if their spelling of "sacrifice" inspired Gwen Stefani to teach the world how to spell "bananas"? If so, bravo Venom. Bravo.

There is better 80’s metal

I just don't like this genre but it was better than I expected

Nasty and brutish. Definitely not for me.

Not into metal, tried, not for me. Better than a lot of modern stuff, comprehensible lyrics and melody for example, so just scrapes a 2.

Man - this hasn't aged well for me. The influence this has had on metal is clear, but a lot of it just feels silly now and the guitar riff, drums, and mixing overall just doesn't do it for me. Perhaps that's because it's hard to go back to something that's much weaker than things like Metallica and more.

Couldn't tell if this was a satirical metal album or it has just aged poorly, it was a fun listen but jeez sacrifice was a corny song especially when they spelled out the word

Kinda meh, I can see how it influenced things though

Came into this album expecting not to like it, and I wasn’t wrong. Generally most metal music doesn’t do it for me so I’m not too surprised. There are exceptions (Doom eternal OST <3), but metal just isn’t my thing. Not awful, but I didn’t like it. 2/5

Generally not my thing, not awful. Sounds like prototypical Metallica

Some cool melody and drums but metal ain't for me

Not a fan

Not great… I guess it was something at the time but it has not aged well IMO.

I’m not a big fan of the themes, which feel very one dimensional and confined. I do appreciate the DIY feel of the album but the niche is too confining for me. I know this is groundbreaking but why not discover more instead of just expressing fascination with one theme.

It's kind of fun, kind of stupid. Can hear the joke in it, can hear seriousness in it too. Not something I plan to come back to.

they do what they say

When listened to on low volume, its like metal elevator music.

A metal album from the 80s with consistent double bass and your standard hardcore lyrics and guitar. I would have rather seen a different Metallica album as they were the better musicians of 80s metal. But this is alright nothing I’d revisit. 5.5/10

80's hum-drum metal. Sounds like it was recorded in an echo chamber. Pretty sure blade (the vampire hunter) listens to this?

I can see what they are going for, the vocals are not for me, however. The guitar riffs and drum lines are nice, but ultimately the lyrics and vocals are what bring it down

instrumentals are pretty solid but there is no musicality in the singing, tough to listen to unless truly in the mood for heavy metal

Not for me.

Musically this is pretty tight, a pretty easy 3, but the vocals are terrible. The lyrics are as bad as you would expect them to be, to the point of sounding like a parody. Hard to imagine ever coming back to it. Fave Songs: Black Metal, To Hell and Back, Buried Alive

Metal. Nothing grabbed me.

Not my thing

First day back at work after over a week off, did not need this. Not my kinda vibe. A bit boring tbh.

They sounded a bit upset about something or other

Heavy / thrash metal all about death and the devil. The music is probably best enjoyed live! All tracks very similar

It was okay. I think I may have preferred an instrumental version. It didn't feel special to me

Da va kje så bra, men leste litt om da i black metal-boko mi i sommer

Not quite as metal and the album cover, title, and band name might suggest. but it does make me want to summon the dead.

Not for me, but at least it’s not actively bad like Slayer. 3/10

Would've preferred it as instrumental only

Felt like being way too drunk at a bad bar after all my friends left

2 star not my vibe

# 30 : Sounds like it was recorded during a jam session in their garage.

I understand why this album is on this list but I’m not really into it.

I can see the appeal, but this isn’t for me. When it comes to hard rock, I think I prefer stuff that’s more melodic. 2/5

I don't listen to a lot of metal, but I can appreciate it and have heard a lot of talented bands and musicians in the genre. This album was mostly just okay to me. Sorry, Black Metal, it's not your fault that you and similar bands always remind me of Spinal Tap.

Not for me

I typically don't care for death metal music. This was early death metal so it wasn't full on screaming. It was short and wasn't horrible. Not good but I tolerated it.

“My flesh it doth rot!” Man this Tenacious D album sucks. Like many things in the early 80s, I’m sure this was the worst of the worst devil music any poor child could be exposed to. But in 2023, I’d believe it if Pat Robertson had this album play during his funeral. Venom isn’t doing anything here that bands like Iron Maiden or Slayer weren’t doing ten times better. It’s a shock record designed to target 15 year old boys who wanted to piss off their dads. But hey, points for helping adjust the course of metal. All hail Satan.

A tough listen.

Good metal album. 2.5

I’m sure this hasn’t aged well. Unless it’s intended to be comical?

In lieu of good songs, be noisy and edgy for the sake of it. Not bad, but quite boring. 2/5

When I saw the lyrics "Satan records their first note" I laughed my ass off. Tougher guys or better musicians can call me a pussy but literally the only contribution Metal music has made is that it gave us Jack Black. But I gave it a shot and I got to the second track. And then immediately started laughing again at the "arm and arm with Lucifer" visual, as if they were frolicking. I think 80s Reaganite parents worried way too much about metal. They should've laughed more at their kids and it would've been a more effective deterrent. This music is hysterical. My buddy in a metal band and I have discussed at length how different metal and punk are. Metal musicians are some of the most technically talented musicians in the world, who choose to play the worst music you've ever heard. Punks literally can't play, but you still know Blitzkrieg Bop, don't you? Anyway this music goes hard, maybe I'll hit the gym and listen to this and make billions of dollars like Dr. Michael Burry. The licks on raise the dead were actually sick. But yeah then I got to Teacher's Pet and laughed my ass off again, not a fucking shot any of those dorks have ever been with a woman.

I do prefer this genre of metal (speed/thrash) over something more polished you would find in Metallica's later albums. However a thrash album like this has less replay value for me...if that makes sense. Albums like this are very cathartic and I love the explosiveness they provide, after that initial introduction though, the album becomes less impactful for me

This was somewhat fun to listen to at the gym just because of the crazy energy. But wow, the lyrics in these songs are so incredibly bad. And not the turbonegro type of bad where it’s funny. Just bad. Add the over the top vocal inflection and delivery onto that and the result is an insufferably corny album if you listen too close. Also thrash is just not my sound. It gets a 2 and that could be generous. Best: none MMM: TEACHERS PET TEACHERS WET MMM

Post-sabbath core. Doesn't have the same punch as Slayer and the guitar isn't as good as Pantera. Teacher's Pet interesting bluesy metal song

I'm not going to lie....I was very surprised by this. These guys can play and actually wrote songs with structure. It sounded, to me, like a cross between Motorhead and Metallica. The problem is that they reminded me of that guy in high school/college who, regardless of how cool he actually may have been, tried SO hard to be edgy/scary/stand out from the crowd, that he lost all credibility and left everybody rolling their eyes as they walked past him. That's these guys to a "T". Enough of the "satanic imagery.....oooohhh....scary!", boy. It's always been lame and ages really poorly.

The most interesting that happened on this album was when the music gradually started getting softer at the end of the final track, At War With Satan. Otherwise, just a lot of screaming and unremarkable music.

4/10. Wait, they ended the album with a preview of the first track of their next album? Is this a metal album, or a mass market serial YA novel?

HELL. DEATH. PISS. I FUCK DEMONS. FIRE BURNS. SATAN RISES. I DON'T PAY MY TAXES ON TIME. This sounds like a fake album that a kid in an 80s sitcom would listen to as a parody of "trying too hard to be edgy"-metal. "Teacher caught me masturbating underneath the desk" - actual lyrics from this album. Also featuring the world's blandest production of all time.

Maybe good in its time, but not just sounds really hilarious. The audio is also shit which doesn't help but it's like amateur hour. Maybe edgy in 1982 but in 2023 it's comical, almost a parody of the metal genre. Also musically it's just not that interesting.

So wannabe edgy, "midnight, 666!" really dawg? I guess I'm just not a fan of the genre

This was alright, not what I’d choose to listen to but I didn’t mind it on in the background. 2*

Mötörheads goes metal. Ei oikein innostanut.

Mieluummin kuunteli ku turpaan otti

Too metal for my taste

Not for me

Rawr and more rawr

Not my jam

Kinda Yuck.

Who knew that devil worship, human sacrifice and necromancy could be so boring?

Much better metal out there. Clearly an influential record but as with most things, what came after is much better. Teachers Pet can get in the bin.

I do like a fair amount of the guitar work, but everything else is poor. The songs themselves feel pretty weak and the production is dire.

I listen to metal somewhat often, but I just have never liked Venom. It just doesn't feel like music to me. I can see how their style influenced 80s thrash metal, which is one of my favorite genres. So I can at least appreciate that even if I dislike the album.

Interesting, but not my cup of tea

Uninspired to the point of annoyance. Instrumentally, they’re technically talented, but use the same basic metal song structure every time. Repetitive and unoriginal, some parts are enjoyable, but if you’ve heard one song, you’ve heard them all. Lyrics are awful, like they’re trying to be satanic without actually knowing what that is. Production value is also just trash. Little to redeem this album, just some mindless metal to put on for a workout or something. 2/5

This was marginally better than shit like sepultura because there's still a bit of musical talent behind it but I still wasn't a fan at all. Joes Blues explosion or whatever was fun even though I couldn't understand the lyrics but it was just lame on this one. I still managed to make it through the entire album so I'm not sure if it deserves a 1 or not.

Apparently this is a hugely influential album on thrash metal and speed metal, and spawned the black metal genre. Does this mean there is a direct chain of events you can follow from this album being released to the burning down of Norwegian churches? If so, I wonder how the band feel about that? Musically it doesn't sound cutting edge there days, which maybe is an indication of its success. Lyrically, like many metal albums, it is very, very silly. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Black Metal Date listened: 11/03/23 (generated 28/02/23)

Generic heavy metal vocals, generic heavy metal guitar riffs, generic heavy metal drums. It’s not “bad” but there’s absolutely nothing remarkable or even memorable about this. Literally nothing stands out. I have zero interest in listening again.

Jesus no

i mean, it's no Children of Bodom, but I get why it's here

You can understand why heavy metal is so easily parodied, the cliches are all here starting with the band name (Venom!), the album title (black (darkness)+metal= Black Metal!), the song titles (To Hell and Back, Buried Alive, Raise The Dead, Leave Me In Hell, Sacrifice, At War with Satan...), album cover (demon face+inverted pentacle star+666+inverted cross=satanic imagery, obviously!). I don't generally enjoy heavy metal music, but can appreciate the effort, (sometimes) this hits all the anti-mainstream sub-genres, speed metal, thrash metal, extreme metal, black metal, but it feels like they're trying way too hard to be offensive and satanic. I'm not offended, but they take themselves way too seriously and though punk and hardcore are musical cousins, at least most punk (and HC) bands have a sense of humour (well, maybe not Rollins!) and/or have an awareness they aren't demon anti-Christs that are saving the world.

didn't give a care

Very poor recording quality, which is unfortunate because I dig some of the songs on a technical level

I want pizza.

It's neat that black metal the genre is named after this album. I never knew that. I dig this more than I expected after seeing the cover. I'm hit or miss on metal but this one is a pretty decentmix of proto-black metal and thrash. I know it's intentional but the lyrics are a bit on the nose and basic though.

I am very picky when it comes to metal, and this doesn’t do it for me

I get it, it’s like real-life Spinal Tap - objectively not good though.

few head nodding moments even though this not my thing. 1.6

Buried Alive->Raise the Dead gets this from a 1 to 2. Phish's version of Buried Alive is way better as it doesn't even need words to convey the sheer terror of being buried alive. I hope Tyler plays this at the store, preferably as setbreak music for a Dead show, but as usual he won't honor Satan. Also interesting to find out today that the Radiohead song "Burn the Witch" is apparently a counter argument to Venoms "Don't burn the Witch". Hail Satan!

Heavy metal. No me ha hecho mucho. Un 2.

Ohh !?!

Venom is a new band and everything on Black Metal was new to me. Technically, there are probably differences between each of the tracks, but the whole album seemed to blend together into one big mess. I think that the album mostly reminded me of the background music and sound effects for the video game DOOM, which is survivable but not endearing. There are albums I have disliked more than this one, but it didn't even come close to getting a like from me.

2.666/5

Wikipedia says it was groundbreaking when it first came out but now it all sort of just merges into one

Iconic, not heavy enough. also the vocals are way back in the mix and it generally sounds not great. super roomy sound that the angular sound just doesnt fit well in.

Starts of as motorhead and stays there mostly, just old metal, that lyrically might be early black metal

Pretty silly, schoolboy stuff. Some of the music sounds like proto-shoegaze; "Buried Alive" could be a comedian reading a Hammer Horror script over early Ride. Other parts sound like Motorhead taking the piss out of a community theater production of Rosemary's Baby. Essential, eh?

Just not for me; can’t get through it.

Pretty fun thrash album, but not my favorite by a long shot

Lmao not the vibe, bought a chair for too much, still unsure

I didn't jam and I didn't fear the devil

It wasn't awful, but it definitely wasn't good either.

For sure an influential album, but there are some real stinkers on this. 'Buried Alive' and 'Teachers Pet' make it seem like the album is more of a parody than an actual attempt at creating something, well... good. And the lyrics are often downright atrocious. Then 'Don't Burn The Witch' hits and you get to see why so many bands were inspired by Venom's sound.

OK album generator. Metallica + Orchestra and Thin Lizzy live, no complaints. But what is this? From 1982? I've never heard of Venom but I'm guessing it must be foundational in some way. Is it metal week and someone forgot to tell me? Anyway. Here we go. Listening now, in 2022, it sounds almost like a parody. I appreciate the energy and speed, but the actual sound quality is pretty terrible. As are the lyrics. Fine, energizing even, to have on in the background. Not really ideal for a close listen. I did google Countess Bathory, which was an interesting read. One star for energy, one star for setting a direction towards things I like a lot. That's all I can muster.

Lost a lot of the impact with the amateur mixing

Might have bumped it up to a 3⭐️ if it hadn’t been recorded through a duffle coat

I was a child when this record came out, but I loved the cover. It was one of those records your parents would never let you buy. It wasn't the first heavy metal record that I loved. I actually don't love this record all that much compared to "Shout at the Devil", "Blizzard of Ozz", or "British Steel". While one might argue that Venom is a totally different genre, I put it in the same bucket as those other records. Maybe that is unfair of me. That being said, it is hard to argue the influence that Venom had on massively successful metal bands including Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth. They seem to have invented that cookie monster vocal style with that dark lyrical content. For that, Black Metal has to be recognized as one of the top albums of all time. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Heavy metal. No me ha hecho mucho. Un 2.

Generic metal. No bad, not great

Pretty generic and uninspired.

Very different to what I expected- much more thrashy and not as heavy as I thought it would be, and just not very exciting tbh

Ok so it's not my jam but I definitely liked it more than I expected. Probably as close to punk as metal gets. 2.5 🌟

Although it was one of the first thrash metal albums, it doesnt mean that I enjoyed it. Just a tad bit too aggressive for me and the "satanic" theme that runs through the whole album is just not something I can get behind

Didn’t enjoy it. Lot of mediocre vocals and uninteresting metal riffs

Mediocre metal, and if that's the best I can say about a metal album, that's a bad sign. I honestly forgot I was listening at one point and just let it fade into the background. I really wanted to like it more, but it just wasn't happening.

Eh not for me

Didn’t hate this but it’s pretty cringe

Apparently very influential in the Satan-bothering metal scene. Not sure if that's really something that deserves respect though. Didn't hate it but it all feels a bit route one, and the production sounds less 'unpolished' and more 'unfinished'.

Rock rápido con guitarras contundentes y voz profunda. Lo he apreciado muy plano. Rockero, pero sin alma y cuerpo

This album's confusing, the mixing is so muted, I really have to turn up the audio to hear it clearly, I liked the performances, but the weak production's really pulling it down for me.

This shit sucked lmao

A bit old school for me. Vocals not the best

Well, I mean... It's definitely more thrash than black metal but it was early days and they sorta invented the genre so I'll cut 'em some slack. What I won't cut any slack on is the lazy, cheesy, try-hard, doom-cookie, "ooh aren't we so scary" lyrics. I was digging some solid shredding until I listened to the lyrics. So stupid. So very lame and stupid. Shame, really.

This has to be what parody metal bands use as inspiration. Extra points for giving me a good laugh!

Decent album hampered by very poor production value

Dated and boring NWOBHM. I can appreciate the scenes it set the foundations for but no fun to listen to

Hokie lyrics, annoying music. Quite immature.

Venom were one of the first to do it and helped influence and create genres of metal that followed to this day. Got to respect them for that, but I don't have to like 'em! I mean, I appreciate this album for its role and all, but it will never be a frequent visit for me to listen to. Though, I could say that for a lot of metal, for me personally, I suppose. Don't @ me, bro...

I was enjoying this until I got to "Teacher's Pet," which made me barf. Scarier than all the naff black metal stuff.

Some people like Green tea. Some people like fruit tea. Some people like earl grey. This is not a variety of tea I enjoy

Even as a metal head this was kind of a tough listen. The production is bad (something the genre it would inspire would take to heart), and the songs blend together pretty hard after a while. "Teacher's Pet" is... just a weird addition here, as well. Favorite track: "Don't Burn the Witch"

Ok so it's not my jam but I definitely liked it more than I expected. Probably as close to punk as metal gets. 2.5 🌟

Pretty good actually but gets a bit tedious

Not into metal. I find metal bass playing hilarious as well because it contributes nothing to the situation. This is beyond cheesy! It’s like cliche devil horns and eyeliner. Maybe it’s ground breaking for current metal bands but I don’t know enough about the genre to comment. The front man looks like Jayo Dunphy’s ma.

This was less painful than I expected. Wouldn't listen again, but I didn't hate it.

I'm not super interested in heavy metal music, but this album started the entire subculture of thrash and black metal. It was fun to listen to and was entertaining.

Quality wasn’t great. Certainly see the pioneering of the genre but I’d rather listen to Kill Em All

I mean, what? It sounds very thin and tinny, for what should be HEAVY BLACK METAL. Probably important if you're into that scene, and not a band I'd ever heard of before.

Nope nope nope. First 5 seconds hurt my ears

I’ve always wanted to check out Venom so I was excited when this came up. I know they’re considered pioneers of metal and black metal but to me this sound more like a parody of metal than a serious metal album.

No thank you. Actually, some of the less thrashy parts of this aren't horrible. The guitar solo in Teacher's Pet is actually pretty cool.

What a ridiculous album. It didn’t seem very good. The songs were trash and it was very underproduced. Will need to read up on it to see what historical merits it has.

This isn't a very good album. The music is slow (for metal) and not a heavy as you might like. The lead singer doesn't sing so much as gravely speak the lyrics, which also seem to lack any sort of flow.

thrash

metal . not my jam

One or two quite good songs Mostly forgettable with lots of cliches Very bad production even by 1982 standards Every sound has subsequently been done better by many other bands

Its so corny and boring. i genuinely just couldnt get through all of it even though i tried. some cool solos though

Perfect example of how an album can be historically relevant and barely tolerable

The more early metal I listen to, the more I think it was maybe just trash for a decade or two. Like I'm grateful for the influence and all, but this is not a very interesting album and sounds like it was written by a group of middle school boys who had too many Monsters.

It could have been the same song 11 times and I wouldn't have noticed.

ngl I was low key excited for this to be an over the top blackened black metal album. Instead it sounds like an album made for people who like "REALLY HEAVY METAL" like imagine dragons. "look at me I listen to *black* metal aren't I cool" zzzz High 1

Well, the name says it all

Tedious, unimaginative, and poorly executed Should be held to account

We get it, you hate religion. Now please stop screaming it in my damn ear.

I can imagine in '82 this was pretty revolutionary, but it's so hokey through my 21 century ears. I really want to honor the influence that this band had on so many others, but I was just embarrassed listening to it.

If Ozzy and Spinal Tap spawned a tribute act that verged into comic parody then Venom is it's name

Sound becomes monotonous

uf no me gusta absolutamente nada esto 2/10

Oh dear. Not a chance.

Hopefully you aren’t hearing this album after you die

Not my thing

Horrible, just horrible.

My favourite genre of humour is 'let's pretend to be satanists and make deeply shit, boring and repetitive metal albums all about it.' Honestly hilarious. Rolled about laughing at that for a good hour this morning.

Not for me

Why? My ears.

just not a metal guy, it all sounds the same

1 - TERRIBLE

It didn’t last too long at least. Good for them for having so much influence but not my thing. Found it very lame. Rating: 1.3

This may be the most accurately-titled album on the list. Musically it is just ok, although it wasn't until almost the end of the album that a track rose above the gravel into actually interesting territory. The lyrics are ridiculous, but that too is just an expected part of the genre. I'm sure that there are better examples to show this off. Favorite track: "Don't Burn the Witch" was OK

Metal is not my thing.

is there a pro pedophilia song on here?? kind of like if Black Sabbath was a bunch of weird perverts (more than they already are)

hated this

Lyrics are repetitive, predictable, and at times cringe-worthy—“put it down towards her mound”? Vocals shout the same way through nearly every track, and the raw, chaotic energy just didn’t land for me. I can see why metal fans love it for attitude and influence, but as a casual listener, it’s a tough slog.

I really couldn't make it through the album.

Meh. Admittedly, I am not a big metal fan, but I can appreciate it. This just wasn’t my favorite of the genre.

This is another one of those albums that has obviously been included because it was massively influential, but which has been completely eclipsed by those followers and has nothing more than historical significance.

Er Diavlo

Just no.

Just a 1/5 through and through. Metallica is on this list a few times, so this record gets invalidated. Vocals that are so painfully on the nose. Really poor mix/master work, at least for the current version on Spotify. Couldn’t take it seriously after an honest 5 song effort

Truly horrible and unpleasant to listen to.

Tf is this shit

kut herrie

Oh no thank you. Dark and angry and way metal-y. Nothing for me here.

It’s just like modern country music but swap the cold beer for hail satan

My favorite song was the one where he screamed about death and hell over the loud guitars. Yeah, that one was really original.

I'm not a fan of metal, no matter what color it is. Some of the songs had some good guitar work, but I really wish this guy would stop screaming at me. Best song: Raise The Dead

I can understand the case for this album being influential for the development of metal, but that doesn't make it an enjoyable listen. Maybe this points to its influence, but too many of the songs play like a mashup of the worst stereotypes of metal music (mercifully without the growling that hadn't taken hold yet). Venom comes off as the lovechild of Motorhead and a satanist, but they must have missed out on the musicality genes, which was never too strong with Motorhead to begin with. If the music was any good maybe I could get behind the satanic obsession, but in the absence of much interesting going on musically it just seems goofy. Realistically, what am I supposed to make of the lyrics? Am I supposed to relate to any of this stuff? Of course, the one song of any interest to those committed to the land of the living is Teacher's Pet. The bluesy interlude in this song was a nice departure from what came before and afterwards, but in an album full of bad lyrics this one really stands out. Did they think they were being clever, rhyming "pet" with "wet"? It's horrible. If this song and Hot for Teacher were horny high-schoolers, Hot for Teacher would be the popular class clown, and Teacher's Pet would be the incel lurking in the back row, devoid of any charm or sense of humor. And that lack of charm is ultimately the overarching problem throughout the album - not much of it is outright offensive, but there's also nothing to like. Some songs have good elements to them, but the good is outweighed by the bad in almost every case. And even if I was inclined to go for this kind of sound, or if I was in to human sacrifice, just about every aspect of what Venom did on this album has been done better elsewhere. Maybe this is one of those albums that everyone should hear once, but needless to say, I won't be returning to it.

I keep getting stuck on this album. I want to like it but it's not hooking me. Probably best to skip

My musical nightmare: an Unlistenable wall of noise. I honestly lasted one track before I couldn't take it anymore.

I don’t even want this album on my algorithm. Stopped it immediately.

No thanks

Utdaterat tycker jag

Boring and repetitive

Getting through this album felt like a chore is the only way I can describe this album. The guitar is good, but the drums leave much to be desired. Vocally it’s meh. It’s not the best, but not the worst. It’s just there and it sounds like it was recording on an answering machine. At one point I asked myself, how is this still going? My final verdict: this is an album that exists.

funniest shit I've ever heard

This album sounded like a parody of metal. So bad but also quite funny

Really really not for me, but that is expected. I can tell the guitar is incredible throughout, so I wish I could handle listening to it more.

There's better metal than this. Also the production is atrocious and most of the riffs are just Motorhead

I found out I hate metal music

Not my style

terrible

Oh blimey! I have brain ache, there’s no excuse for this, the fact they influenced new Metal genres means nothing, crap influencing crap. Ultimate low point was chants of ‘Get Your Tits Out For The Lads’…yeah, deep

I’m all for finding new music but is it sad that for Venom - Black Metal I’m unsure which is the band and which is the album? Quite possibly the longest hour ever and an audacious start of this project for me... For most of the album I wondered if this site allowed ratings lower than 1* but there were one or two songs that weren’t horrible so I guess 1* will do…

Laughable

La, la, la ,al ,la la, la la, la la... My cherie amour, lovely as a summer day My cherie amour, distant as the Milky Way My cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore You're the only girl my heart beats for How I wish that you were mine......la la la, la la la..la la la la la la..

Not my tempo

This did not need to be on the list. I can think of a fair few metal bands that could have easily taken the spot that this album took up

Not for me

This album means nothing to me except as a reminder why I find most metal incredibly annoying and boring.

it's astounding that this album had as much of an impact on metal as it did when it's pretty much garbage. it all sounds like shit. one of the muddiest albums i've heard in my life so i can't even appreciate the energy of the riffs. the whole album sounds like i'm hearing it through the wall to my neighbor's apartment. it's unclear to me if this is a creative choice or a skill issue but it's nigh unlistenable. the lyrics are hilariously cringe so of course the biggest nazi dullards on the planet in norway took it and ran with it.

Absolutely not my kind of music. I can appreciate that Venom pioneered a sub-genre of music, but I am not their intended audience.

Would I listen to it again? No. Def not my vibe, but I can appreciate the musical abilities and the guitars are dope.

Absolutely, no thank you. Also, not interested in music promoted with so much satanic imagery.

Can't say it was my speed exactly

Absolute shit.

No. Extreme metal .. nope. More than an hour? Nope. Sameness

Not my thing

i had a phase like this in high school too i just didn't insist on making it everybody else's problem

It's an alright metal album. It's not very musical, more like noise in the background with some growling and grunting. It's a solid 3/10

Terrible. Rock for nerds. There is nothing authentic about this at all. Feels so fake and forced

I just laughed my way through this. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just so freakin corny. Guttural screams, singing about satan and hell and sacrificing Luther or something. lol * After skipping through the album again, I'm changing my rating from 2 to 1

Keech!

so bad

Unnecessary goth metal.

Not my thing

This is actual garbage, no redeeming qualities

Not my taste

I know someday I’m going to hear a metal song and suddenly understand why people like it so much. My eyes will be open to the power of the darkness. That day is not today.

Just noise

Historically significant perhaps, but really not enjoyable in any way.

Not my style

Do they have any idea how cringe this is? “Oooh, Satan, we’re so edgy”.

Not a fan of metal

I love rock and heavy metal music but this is mostly kind of boring. Guitar is innovating thrash metal but drums are not doing anything interesting and it's jarring to have those put together like that. The sound engineering is awful, which I assume is on purpose but makes for a significantly less enjoyable listen. I am starting to understand why this era of metal bands was called New Wave (of British heavy metal), hearing how the vocals are performed with little regard for being in tune (in this instance clearly valuing the sound of the growl over the pitch of the note) and then being drenched in reverb, which only lengthen and highlight the imperfections.

I've yet to find a metal album I enjoy. This didn't help.

Not my cup of tea.

terrible mixing these guitars are too quiet also for metal these are some boring drums my 108th album and my first 1 so long and all the songs sound the same and are about the same things except for teachers pet where I wish they were singing about Satan again

Diabolic.

So this is the satanic devil-worshipping stuff parents didn’t want their kids listening to. I honestly think that is the only reason anybody would ever listen to it, because their parents didn’t want them to. Cuz I see zero artistic or aesthetic appeal to this at all. Took my ears on a journey to the bottom of the ninth level of hell and back. Yikes this was abysmal. Or should I say abyssal.

I can recognise how the album would have a certain impact on metal, but to be honest, it's not my thing. Even the satanism part of it doesn't really raise my eyebrows or wow me particuarly. It's very much what you would expect, lots of heavy riffs, pounding drums, quick rhythms, 'shouty' singing.

Uhhh.....nope. I'm all for heavy metal....but this? No thanks.

My heavens that was dumb. And yet so demanding of my attention. I see on Wikipedia they were critically assessed as "a trio of buffoons" around this time, and that tracks. I do appreciate the audacity of Teacher's Pet even if I do not condone it.

Oh wow. So bad. One dimensional. My ears are bleeding. Copy and pasted this review from the Black Flag album review.

Wtfwt?

fuck this. don’t put bands like this on the list as a joke, it’s not funny.

Mega oof right here

Not my thing.

can't vibe with this

I see that its a precursor to thrash. I see why people would like it, I dont. Those lyrics....

What torture for my ears. I like a good metal album but this wasn't it.

Oh I didn't care for that at ALL

This is not for me fam.

Désolé je n'aime pas le métal

struggle cityyyyyy ugh cmon with this one

the only album thus far that i've genuinely struggled to get through. not only is this heavy/black metal genre just not my cup of tea, the recording and production sounds terrible. i understand why it's been included on this list in the sense that it was highly influential album for this style of music, but i just thought it was quite bland in comparison to other metal albums out there. the lyrical content was a major turn-off for me - i know they've said that it's unserious and they don't actually do/believe what they sing about but i just though it was super odd, far too literal and somewhat offensive in parts.

awful. parody of itself

Metal is always a tricky genre for me—it has to be really good metal for me to even give it a chance. So what exactly is Black Metal by Venom all about? Let’s find out. On my first listen, I genuinely couldn’t work out whether this was meant to be taken seriously or if it was some sort of parody, closer to Spinal Tap or Tenacious D than a serious metal record. At times, it felt almost cartoonish in its attempt to be dark and heavy. The whole experience was odd, confusing, and ultimately not for me. It’s safe to say this isn’t my thing—I won’t be coming back to it. There’s too much focus on Satanic theatrics and too much noise for the sake of noise. Favourite track: I couldn’t pick one. Least favourite track: Most of the album—I really didn’t enjoy much of it at all. Album artwork: Dark and grim, not something I’d ever want hanging on the wall.

Maybe it was a pioneering album, but in a vacuum, meh 1*

Can I speak to the person who created this list?

minus -100

• 1/5 • Sounds like the soundtrack of a death metal mockumentary

Couldn't finish even pretending I was listening to Retsko at karaoke

No es para mi

I don't think that I found any redeeming quality in this album. Sad.

More like Wack Metal
