Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Did I, a non-music major who knows zero things about music theory and jazz, let alone the difference between Latin jazz, African jazz, and American jazz, appreciate Machito's landmark album that brought Latin jazz into the mainstream? Yes, I guess. And did I, a man who claims that he listens and enjoys "every genre" and is currently participating in the fun journey that is listening 1000+ albums to discover more new music, enjoyed this? I'm gonna be honest: no.

Like most albums that are an exercise in technical competence, it's fun, then it's trifling, then it's a little irritating, then it's over.

Naja naja naja

I only lasted 4 songs before I started pushing the next song button in the hope that something would be different. Two stars because the musicians played well, but it sounded like every other Latin beat piece of big band music.

Not my thing, ok though

50/60s style upbeat jazz. Good but felt dated

South American rhythms with African influences, infectious and hip, not much to say about it otherwise.

I can listen to it on the background, but this is not a music genre I like.

lidt for hurtigt til mig

Not the kind of Jazz I'm into at all. I enjoy smooth and comfortable jazz, perfect for a comfy chair and a sip of whiskey. I don't enjoy this dissonant, 'jerky' and discomforting jazz.

cool run. sweet beats. didn't take anything right away from it. revisit sometime.

First 50s album from 1001albumsgenerator that I listened to. I did not know this album - the beat is fine - but I would probably not listen to it again - perhaps I was not so much in the mood for it.

SAMPLE THIS really great but many of the songs are very similar

I’m not a huge fan of jazz.

Ok if you’re at a Carribean (preferably Cuban) beach bar on a hot day. Otherwise, no. Couldn’t get through the entire album, so maybe i missed something. Listworthy? = ?

Not my style

I don't hate it, but it's really not my thing.

This is the first 50s album I got from this generator and it's overall a mixed bag. I loved the percussion playing throughout the album and it's gotten me excited for more afro-cuban beats. The problem with this album apart from the dated production is the excessive horns and no vocals. I personally don't mind instrumental music and it can be fantastic, but the horns were too loud and got annoying after a while, making the songs blend in together in a bad way. For me two stars isn't a bad album, but one I didn't like or struggled to listen throughout. I listened to another song with Graciela afterwards and it was much more of an enjoyable experience. I feel this album would be better experience live in a jazz club and dancing while being tipsy/drunk.

Ok, there's a lot going on here. Definitely reminds me of those old Hollywood escapist movies. The ones The Purple Rose of Cairo celebrates. This is definitely good music, but like so many of these types of albums just don't work because this is music you'd probably go see live, not listen to in an album. What it is, is the music that used to be piped through Starbucks all day in all their locations before they went pop music. That's exactly what this is! In comparison to the Gotan Project though, this is far more enjoyable, so relatively speaking it's a 2.5/5, but I'll give it a 3.

Probably influential. Not for me.

jazz instrumental stuff....not for me

Good if you like jazz

Ok but a bit same after first few tracks.

zu stressig

Good, but chaotic.

I like the genre, but this one failed to impress.

It has no lyrics. I'm not actually a fan of Jazz. It's not bad, but I wouldn't put it on myself.

I thought this album lacked entertaining music, which seems absurd because the whole point, I presume, is for each song to be entertaining at least in part. Some moments were fun, but all of it was a chore. I'll give some of my favorites a listen again, but I'm not sure why this was significant. Either way, I'm no big fan. This is what you recommend someone who can't stop listening to 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 and you want them to never listen to it again.

Clearly a talented and influential musician but wasn’t really feeling it and couldn’t hear beyond Jamie’s comment about it sounding like an Odeon ad

Ja! Het is me gelukt!

Al Herb and the Tiquanna Brass - esque. But I'm not sure if it's at the same level so far. @ Kenya

Wow bit of a change of up- I mean who doesn't love afro-cuban Jazz? Like backgorund music from a hipster restaurant in Shoreditch. I'm a fan of Jazz music in the main and also don't mind some Cuban salsa music. Not too sure I like the two combined but its decent enough background music pottering around the Flat on Saturday morning. And at least its not Joni Mitchell.

Enough beats to thicken a mayo. Not heaps memorable

I mean it was fine. There were a couple parts i really enjoyed. But it’s just not something I’m going to listen to again.

Alright. Great background music.

This one is ok. I like the sharp horns mixed with the bongo style percussion. (Especially "Kenya" and "holiday" which really gets going after the mid point of the song) This is some decent backround music, for me. Can just sit back and listen or have a conversation going and not miss out on the sound

Jon boi would fuckin love this Lisa Simpson shit.

1958. Key Songs: Kenya, Wild Jungle, Congo Mulence

liked this a bit

jazzy!

not my thing

Das entspricht nicht meinem Interesse.

2 - TERRIBLE

el que sigue, please...

No Thankyou.

Latin jazz could be good but sadly not my thing

Not my cup of tea, but I could see the appeal.

Music is ok in a 1950's vibe. The sleeve is not so nice featuring Primitive Masks from Carlebach Galleries NewYork photographed by Lester Kraus and an average type layout. Standard b/w reverse layout by a printer. Roulette 1958 pressing has good, graphic, generic labels.

I feel a little bad about this one because I know it's a decent piece of music. But the frantic horn section that shows up in every piece was grating on the ears.

sounds like music youd hear in a lift, shite

Not the type of the music I like at all

mmmmm boring but it can be like second hearing music

Sounds like the soundtrack to wacky adventures in a sixties film.

Couldn't get through it.

Not the worst jazz but it was gunning for it

Not a fan.

Obstreperous and shrill trumpets, exposes the age of the recording making it unenjoyable. Would be ok quiet in the background in Chiquitto's. Turned it down halfway through, think I've got tinnitus. Very long half hour.

Not something that interests me

1950s samba and jazz fused together—what could go wrong? Kenya by Machito is at least upbeat, but beyond that, it didn’t do much for me. I listened to this album two or three times today and honestly couldn’t tell when one track ended and another began—it all just blended into the same sound. This isn’t your stereotypical jazz album; it’s more energetic and packed with horns and percussion, but in the end, it just feels chaotic. There’s a lot happening, yet somehow nothing really stands out. Favourite track: Holiday was quite pleasant, I guess—it sounded like something that could play during a slapstick comedy scene. Least favourite track: Everything else just blurred into nothingness. Album artwork: Cool cover. In summary, this one’s not for me—I won’t be listening to it again.

Instrumental samba-ish jazz with the trumpet as a prominent instrument. You really can’t win if that’s the starting point

ragazzi quello che ha fatto sta lista tiene la merda in testa hmm si oggi mi sento proprio un'ora di they call me cuban pete im the king of the rumba beat (instrumental)

Not my cup of tea.

I like hooty Latin dance music as much as someone who cannot do those dances can, but I felt jostled by this record, and am opting to just get out of its way. Plus, terrible cover!

If this were some objective rating of music, I’d definitely go higher. But it’s not—to be honest, it probably can’t be objective. And I really don’t like this.

I have an aversion to trumpets in most forms so this is absolutely not for me. I don’t know if it’s technically good or not, it just sounds like cacophonous trumpets and relentless bongo-ing to me. Hated it.

Annoying and grating. Wild Jungle (5/10) Congo Mulence (3/10) Kenya (2/10) Oyeme (3/10) Holiday (3/10) Cannonology (3/10) Frenzy (2/10) Blues a La Machito (3/10) Conversation (3/10) Tin Tin Deo (4/10) Minor Rama (3/10) Tururato (2/10) 3/10

Big band arrangements of this period tend towards the angular and shrill, same with the Ray Charles 'genius' album side 1. The percussion is the best part and the inspiration I guess. Not for me, though.

I don't like this kind of music unfortunately

Latin jazz, tight but abrasive and hard to listen to

Not my kind

OMG. Bland and repetitive. Best served with bad Mexican food.

Man. this album is loud. I'm sure its very influential to who its influential to, but to me, its just loud. Apparently there was a swing revival in the 90s and that's all this album reminds me of. Like that dancing scene in The Mask, its cool for the context, but deafening loud and almost any other circumstance. And every song sounds exactly the same.

Jazz dus niet uitgeluisterd

Not my kind of music

I need actual words.

Tom and Jerry the musical

Not for me 1/5

first listen. Or not. I'm not listening to that.

Nah fam. Why this here

Saisipa kuunnella vain näitä rumpuja!

Absolute pish.

I don't like this kind of music.

This album is a big slice of 'not for me'. Technically proficient Probably insanely inspirational for musicians at the time, but it's just not a style that interests me at all. i had no desire to give it a second listen, but for the sake of the project I have put it on again, but can't see it growing on me seems harsh to give something like this a 1 because there is nothing wrong with it, but i'd rather not listen to it 1/5

There wasn't a lot of variation between songs. The first track was fine, but i didn't need to hear it 12 times.

Lively world jazz, not my cup of tea

Not a jazz fan

I guess a classic in its kind, but way too cheerful and sunny and 'life is beautiful for me'. Come on, some energy would be appreciated

this raised my HR, interesting but made me a little anxious

Melted my head

not that great

Meh...nothing special. 1.5/5

Pink Panther car chase rushes past us while we’re sipping Singapore Slings in a Tiki Bar

Not my thing

i hated every second of this

There's few genres I really get nothing out of but this type of Latin jazz is one of them, does absolutely nothing for me. The band seems talented but it just doesn't vibe with me at all

Not my type 1/5 0 songs added to library

Umm wtf is this bs

Machito was a Latin jazz musician from Cuba who had an interest in African culture. He helped define the Afro-Cuban jazz sub-genre, and this album Kenya is a testament to that. It's jazzy, but also filled with African instruments and rhythms. I wouldn't say I liked the music, but I didn't hate it either.

poo poo

Didn’t like

This is a tough one. I would have it on all the time as background music for all its energy. However, I wouldn't "listen" to it. Ultimately, because it's not on Amazon music, the point is moot.

noooooooooo

wasn't feeling it

Enjoyable
