i can sort of remember listening to "Funeral" about a year ago. the style and sound of this album feels quite similar but i can tell "Funeral" is my favorite between the two. both albums are quite good, but Arcade Fire just doesn't get better than "Funeral". this album is still fantastic though

Pretty lovely and a good trip down memory lane - but it’s a bit overlong - I’ve started to a appreciate a compact album - although this one is actually quite engaging throughout. It would be a 4 star were it a quarter shorter

This is not Arcade Fire's best album, but it is their most focused and complete. Nothing quite captures the despairing ennui of suburban life quite like The Suburbs. It's critical, of course - "dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains" isn't the most singable line, but they make it sound sickly sweet - but there are also touches of nostalgia (We Used to Wait and Rococo) to balance out the despair (City with No Children. among others) and outright panic (Month of May). It's a successful concept album that's more than the sum of its parts, but the parts are damn good to start with. Best track: Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

Enfin un album écoutable! J'aime bien les arrangements de cordes de Owen Palet Les tones de drums et guits sont cool J'aime bien le beat croche de modern man Rococo me tombait sur les nerfs avant mais it grew on me et maintenant je l'aime bien Bonnes chansons bien construite, bien arrangée, progressions d'accords surprenantes. J'écoute quand même souvent cet album si on pouvait mettre des demi étoile j'aurais mis 4.5

Cet album est excellent. C’est un peu long par contre. J’étais prêt à passer à autre chose avant que ce ne soit terminé. Le band a un son caractéristique et Will Butler a une façon propre à lui d’écrire des tounes. Ce n’est pas mon AF favoris.

J’ai une préférence pour Funeral, mais la progression Funeral, Néon Bible et Suburbs (et même Reflektor) est parfaite. Pièce préférée: Rococo

This and a few other albums started the multi-instrument folk rock band revolution. Good stuff.

Too generic for my pallet.

I really like Arcade Fire and I actually felt disappointed. The album felt monotone which is not what I expected from them. I wasn’t familiar with this album as a whole, just a few songs—and admittedly not my favorites. I wouldn’t venture to saying it is a bad album. It just wasn’t interesting. Not even from a manspreading perspective.

Okay, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t love today’s album. I guess I’ve never listened to an Arcade Fire album all the way through, and while I’ve considered myself a casual fan in the past (have some of their songs on playlists, etc.) and am impressed by their multi-instrumentality…I thought this album was pretty boring to listen to. After the first few songs it just all sounded pretty much the same to me. So, there you have it. A person who didn’t like the 2011 Grammy-winning Album of the Year

I've never given Arcade Fire a shot despite them being all the rage back when I was in highschool...and this is dope, great album to have on.

Most of my listening experience swung between "hey, not bad" and "actually this is pretty good". Then Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) came on and completely blew me away. An absolutely phenomenal piece of music which really elevates the album as a whole.

Much maligned due to its predecessors. I still love it. Really stands up. Less bangers and more a feeling!

uh, WOW. this has got to be one of my favorites so far. i can tell that repeated listenings can only enhance my enjoyment of this album, and i am going to listen to other music by arcade fire, too. this is definitely an album to be enjoyed fully. the singles are definitely good and stand out, but the album was created to listened to as it is. the variety of instruments and sounds! the flare from the classical music influence, the different impact coming from two vocalists, it's all wonderful.

I still remember when this album came out, how much noise it made in the indie rock community, and the major stir it caused in the mainstream community by winning a Best Album Grammy. Back in 2010 when I listened to this, I didn't appreciate this album, nor understand the hype around it, so I was excited to listen again all these years later with ears that have expanded and developed their tastes. This time around, I enjoyed the album a lot more. This is yet another album that is best enjoyed as an album, and not as singles. It makes good use of storytelling and the songs have good ups and downs and mixed tempos to keep things from feeling stale. This time around, I'm happy to say this album resonated with me and is exactly what I have come to enjoy about indie rock.

Grew on me through multiple listens. Some lovely tracks in there.

Definitely a good piece of art with a cohesive sound and some great songs. Month of May is my favorite for sure, and not just for nostalgic reasons. I didn't love or get lost in the album, and part of it felt very dreary.

I just do not care for indie rock. I do not know what the big deal of this album is either. It is not the worst album on the list but there is no need to listen to it again.

Kind of boring but some ok stuff.

The songs that were overplayed on every indie radio station a decade ago. The music is pretty good but gahh have I heard it too much.

This is definitely an improvement on the debut which was on the list not very long ago. I wondered why I would get multiple albums from them but this seems like a breakthrough of sorts, certainly unique, at times catchy, with a lot of talent.

Remember being a kid in the summer of year two thousand something? That's what this album sounds like

When Funeral came out it was a revelation for me. A band from my home town the darlings of Indie rock. And man was that album good! Up there with The Aeroplane Over The Sea and suddenly Montreal was the epicenter of Indie rock, mentioned in the same breath as Austin and Atgens and dare I say...Seattle. fast forward a few years and The Suburbs cones and say what...a Grammy award? Really? But is The Suburbs as good as Funeral? No, but it's fucking close. The titles track that opens up the album is everything good about Arcade Fire ... soaring melodies, toe tapping beat and beautiful, personal, poignant lyrics. There's really very little let up throughout the album. Modern Man, Rococo, Half Light, Speaking in Tongues all fantastic songs. 4.5 🌟

Best Song: Rococo. I really like the way he plays with the stresses on the syllables of the word "rococo" to generate rhythm in the chorus. Worst Song: Wasted Hours. Sleepy song that sounds like old blues standard instrumentals. Not a terrible song, but doesn't fit with the rest of the album. Overall: Well-produced, thoughtful, stylish indie rock-pop? It's definitely very well done, but still ends up feeling somewhat heartless to me.

Listened to on 2/7/22 4.5/5 Favorite songs: The Suburbs and Wasted Time We finally got something that wasn’t from the 60s and wow was it so much better. This album was so good and accurately depicts what growing up in the suburbs is like. I would highly recommend and enjoyed listening to it!

More of a rock leaning to this album than their usual orchestral swells; though these are still there - like walking into a cathedral in a pair of crocs. I lived in the suburbs. It didn't sound anything like this. Best Tracks: The Suburbs; Ready To Start; Modern Man

La cuestión es que tenía muy buen recuerdo de este album pero ahora me ha parecido bien pero no notable. Hay que escucharlo y es imprescindible pero no algo increíble.

Love Arcade Fire. Their 4 album run from Funeral - Reflektor includes some of my most formative music. When this album came out I think I likely ranked it 4th out of those 4 album (Funeral #1, Neon Bible #2, Reflecktor #3) but it seemed much stronger on this listen. Made me very nostalgic for guitar driven indie rock. Ready to Start is the clear highlight, but all of the first 3 songs are bangers. 4.5/5

while Ready to start is my favorite arcade fire song, I can't give this a 5 if I gave Funeral one. It is a really good album though.

NOSTALGIA Inspired by their upbringing in a suburb of Houston, Texas. Nostalgia. Did it worked on me? Yes, because I also have my own experiences of living in a suburban area. Some elements of '80s synthpop and '90s alt-rock all mixed with the notably soft and indie rock sound. Nostalgia. I think this IS what nostalgia sounds like. Bittersweet, but it's just a sugar coating that covers the fact that it was just a mundane experience in a freaking suburb. This album nailed that character of nostalgia. It's boring, but the sounds and the instrumental build-ups create this sweet nostalgia flavor. Album cover of a generic photo of a suburban scene. Edited so it looks like faded and unreal, yet familiar at the same time. Nostalgia. Perfect album cover, it tells us that nostalgia lies. And perhaps that's why it sounds and feels so sweet. Overall, it's basically a nostalgia album. It worked on me most of the time, because again, I have my own suburban experiences. But I think other people who never lived in a suburban area, or even anyone who observed the sound closely, will see this album's sound naked: a boring indie rock sound.

Excellent album. I was dubious about Arcade Fire when I read some of the music press reports and reviews. But I found that the album was just 'different' to other releases around that time. Well worth listening to.

JANUARY 19TH "kids wanna be so hard but in my dreams we're stil screamin' and runnin' through the yard and all of the walls that they built in the 70s finally fall and all of the houses they build in the 70s finally fall meant nothing at all." track 1 gave me the feeling this album would be very "I'd come back if I was bored." and track 2 confirmed it. "I wish that I could have loved you then before our age was through." "our heads are just houses without enough windows they say you hear human voices but they only echo." "month of may, it's a violent thing." for sure. it's taurus/gemini season. "you started a war that we can't win." is prob my favourite lyric. I have the feeling I'm gonna come back to this album every time I have a life crisis and reminisce about the old days. it gives me the smiths and the killers vibes. 8,5/10

REALLY enjoyed listening to this. I love Arcade Fire and this album makes a real statement IMO. They make some crazy sounds, keep it interesting and exciting throughout Sprawl II towards the end is a great vibe for example. I felt a big mixture of things from this album and I liked it. Perfect length too.

Well, what a JOY that was. Really loved it. Arcade Fire are such a brilliant band. Weirdly one song went a bit ABBA at one point I thought, but I liked that about it. Such epic optimistic music - always puts you in a good mood. would love to see them like at some point

This album is a masterpiece in my opinion. I ruddy love it. It gives me a very specific feeling when I listen to it and I feel like I have this exact picture of the whole album as a concept. Might be a load of rubbish though. Sprawl II is my favourite Arcade Fire song.

A grand, layered, and spiraling next step in the band's sound. It is epic for sure, and an excellent album, but it does make me miss a bit of the fire and homegrown feel I heard in their debut.

Arcade Fire perfectly encapsulates an aesthetic of the suburban dread that most modern Americans experience. Not only that, but sonically they found a sound that uniquely identifies them as major players in the 2010s indie rock scene two albums after their first.

Dull, too long, got bored of it before the halfway point and realised there was still over 30 minutes left. Really not my style and this album clearly influenced a lot of other stuff I don’t like from the 2010s.

Oh AF. The debut blew my mind, hit me emotionally hard. The second a little less so but a majestic release. By The Surburbs I feel little of the vibe that carried the first two albums. The opener is solid, but as the rest it feels like a pastiche of themselves. It's solid and perfectly listenable but really goes nowhere.

Interesting but I'm not sure how memorable it will really be

An emotionally dense concept album that threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition - the mid section of the album drags a little - but there’s no denying the quality of the anthems in this work. At its peak it’s absolutely stunning.

Ausser dass es weder 2 noch 4 Sterne sind, sondern 3, gäbe es noch zu sagen, dass viele Songs zu lang sind (ausgerechnet der erste Song ist bereits zu lang, was ich vom Standpunkt der Vermarktung für nicht nachvollziehbar halte) und auch das Album ist insgesamt überflüssig lang.

I'm not a fan of Arcade Fire. I realize that is a massive album for a lot of people, but I just couldn't get into it. With that said, it's a really well done and well paced album.

Arcade Fire are not afraid to try new things with their sound and I love them for that, but it's not always what I want from them. The suburbs really just expanded and matured their vibe from The Funeral (which is an album I will always hold special to me). The Suburbs really blew them into the stratosphere and allowed them to grow into the indie powerhouse they were becoming, but they'll always be the goofs rollicking around in football helmets in the small 2-300 cap club I first saw them in...

Was underwhelmed the first time I listened to it, but it has eventually become my favorite Arcade Fire album

A great album that truly acts as a single work, rather than a bunch of singles.

For some reason I never got into these mid-2000's "indie rock" bands. They're a bit too pretty for me - maybe there isn't enough puck rock influence musically, even if some of the ethos is there otherwise (hence the "indie" label). They never seem to actually rock to me. This is a bit of a chore for me to get through if I'm being honest. A little boring but not terrible. Just ok.

it was very good I like it a lot. I was very impressed. it was just a little bit long so I got a little bored.

Theatrical. It's not bad and I like the unique instrumentation that pops up but holy hell is it long. I imagine it's telling a story but I zoned out here and there. At least I have a reason to be so lukewarm on Arcade Fire now. Favorite tracks: "The Suburbs", "Deep Blue"
