We Are Family

Fabulous. This is one of the first albums I acquired on vinyl from a record store in the same shopping center as a pretzel place. Anyways.. the album is so much more than the title track. The first two songs are disco standards and “Thinking of You” is a personal favorite. 4/5 I recommend the Dimitri from Paris remix of “Lost in Music” as well.

An all time classic anthemic song in We are Family. I don't think I've been to a wedding without this song playing! The whole album is very disco pop and familiar sounding. Best: We are Family, Thinking of you. Worst: Somebody Loves Me 3.5 Stars

Disco sucks!

While not exactly an *original* concept, the fact the title track here has been adopted by the Campbell clan at any and all gatherings with a DJ gives this album a minimum of 3 stars. I'd really like to give it a 3.5. The fact that the next day I can only remember the title track and the one that Gettin' Jiggy Wit It ripped off... err I mean sampled... means it falls to the 3 star side. Enjoyable listen though!

This album is most well known for the song "We Are Family," but the entire album has a similar vibe/tune. This R&B/disco music is great to put on in the background of a cocktail party, or really during any time that some chill, but groovy music is needed.

Way too long an album and very repetitive. Too bored to finish it fully, or maybe I just wasn’t at a party in the 80s…

Either the entire style or at least this particular album didn't age well at all. The music isn't bad as such, but it's entirely uninteresting to me from start to finish. The well-known title track might be the worst song of the album by virtue of being catchy in an annoying way.

This is a great listen, very nostalgic, fantastic production values, lots of familiar songs that are well known for good reason. I liked it.

We are family and thinking of you are clearly the most groovy songs...love the overall album tone and all basslines are dope! --- Perfect to listen the entire album in one go

cool experience listening to this. i can definitely hear a LOT of future funk samples taken from this album alone (saint pepsi sampled easier to love, moe shop sampled he's the greatest dancer, etc...)

I first met the Sledge sisters whilst backpacking around Papua New Guinea. Each evening one of them would approach me in private and scream "We Are Family" in my face for up to two hours. Looking back, I probably shouldn't have forced them to have that orgy in front of their grandparents, but what's a boy to do?

Simple and appealing with groovy bass lines that you can dance to.

A classic album. Nile Rogers in peak songwriting and producing form. So many disco classics which you’ll still hear at least one of on any given night out and will always bring the vibes no matter the sort of club you’re in. The Dimitri From Paris remixes are also pure fire.

My score is pretty much entirely based on strong legacy, songwriting, superb musical proficiency and an interesting sampling history. Mad respect for this, although it's a bit too slushy and cheesy for my personal tastes. 7/10

Another album that got played twice during the day. So many classics! Nile Rodgers creating a legacy for himself, Sister Sledge and an entire genre.

When I listen to disco music I like to pretend I’m Matt Damon trying to escape from Mars. I enjoyed this a lot more than just the one hit I only hear at weddings.

Highlights - He's The Greatest Dancer, You're a friend to me Lowlights - Somebody Loves Me (too long), We Are Family The title track, in my opinion is the weakest of the bunch, and Somebody Loves Me is long and repetitious...But the rest of this album is fantastic, especially when you're gettin' jiggy with the Greatest Dancer. This is pure R&B/disco joy.

Still feels fresh. Got that obvious Niles Rogers influence.

Oh baby the album starts with that lick they used for Gettin Jiggy Wit It, now I know where it comes from! Of course "We Are Family" is a classic but I did not know who the artist was. This is really eye opening for me. Some of the songs and themes are just way too feel good earnest to even be enjoyable. Glad I heard this but probably won't seek it out in the future.

He's The Greatest Dancer - An absolute Banger! Infectious beat that gets your hips moving and your foot tappin. Lost In Music - Fun Disco song that's easy to dance to. Almost like a marching song for disco. Could see a lot of clapping going on to this song. Somebody Love Me - Great love song that I'd never heard before. Gives me 10cc's vibes. Hauntingly beautiful and sweet. Thinking Of You - That Bass walk is fuckin solid. Mixed with Niles Rodgers guitar riff carries this gem to be another Banger of a disco classic. We Are Family - Obvious gold standard of Disco. Song about unification produced to perfection. The hi hat is the backbone that the bass riff bounces along as the piano and strings hi five each other in celebration each time they tip toe along this fantastic groove. Easier To Love - Slowing it down after the roof raiser before the Sledge Sister ease you in to a harmonic hammock. Your body sways with the comforting beat of the bongos and the soothing strings. You're a Friend To Me - Wow slowing it down even more. Um not too sure how I feel about this one... It's fine, the strings are nice. Definitely the weakest of the bunch. One More Time - Fun little song to wrap the album up with. Songs like unused rhythms from their bangers but it's fun enough. The little guitar solo was fun.

disco is dead

Oooh baby, disco riffs to kick things off. Not upset about that. This is bringing me to the 'gettin' jiggy with it' era that followed in the 90s, and the disco revitalization (Get Lucky) that came afterwards. I don't know how much these sisters get credit as pioneers, but maybe the OG disco music isn't as bad as it's cracked up to be. And yes, I still hate the title track - credit that to being overplayed I guess. Now time to listen to Poolside's Daytime Disco playlist for the next 10 hours.

Overall the album is good. Not all the songs are hits for sure but I didn’t hate my life. I enjoyed the upbeat positive experience

This was a rough one for me. I did admittedly listen to it at the end of the day which may have colored how I felt about it but it was repetitive and just felt like it took forever to finish.

Enjoy the instrumentation and smooth production but as the album goes on I start to lose interest. Some nice tracks but as an album it doesn't hold tigether for me.

Funkayyyyy Discoooo. First track is quite nice. Then it sort of went downhill for me. Not bad at all, just not my thing. I feel like a broken record with that phrase.

Favorites: He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family, Lost in Music, Thinking of You, Easier to Love, One More Time Primarily a back up band, Sister Sledge made a name for themselves with this album. Produced and written by the legendary Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. There was surprisingly little to no collaboration between Chic and the sisters in the creation of the songs. Nile Rodgers has said it is the best LP he has produced. 'We are Family' track was recorded in one take, with Kathy Sledge not knowing the lyrics ahead of time. Nile Rodgers would feed her one line at a time through headphones to make it sound spontaneous.

Familiarity: 3/10 Notes: Classic Disco sound, unfortunately not a sound I can take a whole lot of. Slogged through it, begrudgingly. True Rating: 6/10

This is music from when I had a drive-in disco. Disco, among with a lot of other music styles, is still one of my favorite music styles. It was nice to listen to this album. I had not listened to it as an album but I know all the songs of the album. If I would go through my single collection I know I have some singles of ‘Sister Sledge’ there. I really liked the remixes.

The source of a lot of hip/hop and rap hooks and beats later one. Full force disco funk with wedding staples that every DJ dreads. But they are staples.

Definitely disco. But I find myself jiggling my foot and getting lost in the music as I work. Pleasant at first, but some of it's kind of sappy. ... OK reeeeally sappy. Won't be listening again. It's fine but it's just not for me.

that Friday feeling

This is another album that I think is generally good, but I don't understand why it's on this list. It's a disco album, so far as I can tell it's not a groundbreaking disco album. It has some big hits on it, but I'm left wondering why I should listen to this album in particular out of the disco genre. Not a fault of this album, more of an issue with the list itself 3/5

Title track bangs obviously and it's a dang classic u know. Nice to have heard the whole album the song is from, nice funky vibes. Chill, easy listen for some upbeat good tunes.

Essential disco album, featuring Nile and Bernie from Chic. The Spotify version substitutes the radio edit of the title track instead of the full 8-minute version. YMMV for disco, but this should be at least a 3 star for everyone. 4 star for me, almost a 5, but a little filler takes it down a notch.

Top notch strings. I had never heard of the Chic-Sledge connection, but it makes sense now. Many vocals are strong, but outside those highlights it lacks energy.

This is one of those things I never actively listen to, but even in like 15 seconds of the start of this album I knew I was gonna like it. Catchy AF, cool disco/R&B beats. Must make a mental note to listen to more of this stuff 4/5.
