Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Some of this was kind of okay but most of it was terrible. I don’t need to listen to music to make me feel anxious, I’m plenty anxious on my own.

Não sei o que dizer... Só sentir

Just why?? Yeah never heard of this artist and I wish it had stayed that way . If I didn't hear this for a 1000 years, it would still be too soon. Waste of my time

Weird. 2 stars? Maybe 1?

A bit of late 70s sound most rendered as muzac. Filler tracks consist of layers of of bustling random noises that are mostly made from instruments, typical for this period.

Barry Adamson is talented but weird and not my thing at all. The other album we had of his got a 1 because you can't ask me to connect with a fictional soundtrack and the same applies here. Most soundtrack albums are average anyway, fake ones are worse.

I did not finish the album. The first half was so bad imo that I couldn't go any further. I am disappoint.

I have a feeling I’m missing part of the puzzle here. That I haven’t seen the film or gotten the references. As an album, it wasn’t always creepy and unpleasant, but it sometimes was, and I’ve forgotten the rest.

No thank you

In the time I've been doing this list, I've not enjoyed something less than this. I usually give an album two listens and then additional if I am enjoying it or need more clarity. With this one, I barely got through one listen. There was some song with talking over the top which was the absolute low point. The one positive is that track 2 was good. But I will never revisit this album ever again. Didn't enjoy it whatsoever ONE

total crap. very unsettling

Some creepy songs some good background ones. But as another review noted- this list is not for soundtracks and I don’t think this album have been included. Nice concept though- the album song’s were each supposed to be songs for movies.

Woof. 1. Not listening again. It's cool, I guess, in the same way a banana taped to the wall is art. Not for me

There are deaths for worthy concepts: The honorable failure, but also the complete formal let-down. While I didn't come into this listen impressed by Adamson, I expected something much more cohesive, so Oedipus Schmoedipus, title aside, presents the latter pathology. Music is abstract, which is its strength. Kaleidoscopic work always ends as abstraction, too, but we can't forget the thing holding it all together. Refracting elements must be specific enough in isolation. In the album's case, specificity only comes with the words, which end up too divided to contribute to anything but a wish for something better.

shitty background music. the sweetest embrace of all caught me off guard, that was heavy. last of the album was just annoying

This is an absolute wtf kind of album. There are some decent instrumental tracks that are jazzy and classical and then there are tracks of talking and then just noises I suppose. It was jumbled and disorienting and quite terrible at times. Not sure all these songs could be considered music. Puzzling how this made the list. 1.9/10

I was simply bored until it got to "It's Business As Usual," then I actively began to dislike it. As for the concept of being a faux movie soundtrack, this pretense comes across more like a weak way to justify this hodgepodge of half baked musical ideas. The spoken word sections are particularly annoying. It would be one thing if this were all just background music that romanticized the past, but you have these periodic, but extensive, sections that are absolutely jarring to the experience of the music itself. This album is at once both loosely constructed and overdone.

I’m usually much more forgiving of this style of music than most on this site, but virtually none of these songs ever came together for me in any worthwhile way. It was difficult for me to piece out even the barest fragments of ideas and it just sounded like someone making music just to do it, without any discernable motivation or end-goal.

What the fuck is this shit?? Dated 90s weirdness.

Self indulgent rubbish.

The amount of the album that was like straight answering machine recordings was bizarre. I get they were going for a story of sorts but it didn't work for a casual listener like myself

Doe mij maar Nilsson Schmilsson

What the hell was dit!?

Go bang your mom dude

I really didn't like this album. But I get the impression that that Barry Adamson doesn't want people to like this album. He's clearly capable of creating music that people will genuinely enjoy but, Adamson seems to be of the school of thought that "art" and "entertainment" are mutually exclusive. As such, he's made this album unenjoyable for more than a minute or so at a time by making a point to dial up the "nope" factor any time the album starts to get good. It's no surprise to learn that Nick Cave was attached this project as it has his distinctive stench smeared all over it. Adamson and Cave both seem to be cut from the same, soiled cloth and I just don't have the patience for the feces they try to sell as "art".

This was absolute pants. If I could give it minus stars I would. Minus one thousand stars for sounding like jellied tripe.

What? No.

What? "Set the controls..." sounds like a ripoff of Vogue and the Farm... Too much contrast between different instruments, melodies, Mix of bad jazz interlaced with bad lyrical poetry.

A very experimental kind of jazz music, too experimental.

Badipus Schmobadipus

Barry Adamson's third album released in 1996, is filled with lounge / soul jazz music. It's an interesting album because I have not heard music like this before. It sounded dark and melancholy. One song was literally an audiobook short story. This man is either crazy or a genius, and I guess I would have to listen to more of his music to figure out which he is. However for this album, I don't need to listen to it again.

To much crowd noises.

This album, in particular, reminds me of this group of LoDo nightclubs (not dance clubs but lounges), which opened in the early 2000s, done by this interior designer I was friends with. The designer would proudly invite some friends to attend the grand openings for VIP tables and comped bottle service. I would spend the requisite time there, covering my free yet overpriced vodka drink whilst wondering how much longer I had to listen to the bad music and some Chad in a jewel-toned button down telling me about his struggle to pass the real estate exam or his job in finance while telling me how much he liked the music. This is not a cohesive album, more just a collection of tracks. And the transitions between them are non-existent. Each song is a jarring new sound. Add in the weird talking over the grating electronic sounds followed up by some jazz, this album is a hard no for me.

Struggled a lot to finish this one, skipped within the tracks quite a bit and did not miss anything because in most of the tracks everything has been said by the second 40. Unbearable cringy at times, it fits a lot with so many of the records in the list that are there not for their artistic value but because they're weird. It grabs a second air with “In a Moment of Clarity” but soon sinks again in its repetitiveness and huge self-awareness.

I'm not enjoying this, not really even as background.

I don't really understand what this album is about or for. It is really just free-form art put into a "listenable" state, so most of the songs exist just for the sake of existing.

The most eclectic mix of genres and styles that I've ever heard. Never would I mix spoken word with disco tunes with jazz(?)-like structures. It's not something I'm ever going to listen to again either despite its interesting composition.

Whether I like this or not seems to depend greatly on my mood. In a good mood, I am absolutely willing to put up with this record’s BS. Not so much if I’m annoyed, which is a bad thing for this album because I’ve mostly been listening while driving. It’s a joke album and the joke isn’t funny, really. Favourite track: “The Vibes Ain’t Nothing but the Vibes” (get it, because it’s a vibraphone . . . ugh)

Terrible title. That’s the first thing off the checklist. I think there’s a fine line to be walked with this ‘atmospheric beats’ sort of music, and I can’t quite put my finger on when it does work and when it doesn’t, but… this wasn’t it.

Not for me

It's pleasant. It's unchallenging. It's not even one of the 2,002 albums you must listen to before you die.

refused to finish

Noicdes

Outoilua joka ei itselleni uppoa yhtään. Pari kertaa taistelin läpi mutta ei levy ainakaan yhtään paremmaksi muuttunut.
