Reviews (page 15 of 15)

Obviously has the major breakthrough hits, weaker 2nd side for me.

Ehh... can't say i'm into this sort of music. More about the flashy guitars than cresting beautiful unique soundscapes, and the meh lyrics don't make up for that loss of enjoyment.

Panama rulez. The rest of it also kinda rulez but it’s just not my bag yaknow?

There are some really well known songs that carry the album.

Lots of classic songs here. I'm not the biggest VH fan, but it is hard to deny how good some of these songs are and the impact they made on later musicians.

Phenomenal album. I knew the hits, but maaaan what killer songs with game-changing guitar chops.

Great guitar work in this one and only a few songs were filler. Deserves another listen.

It was ok. Probably wouldn’t listen again by choice.

Solid, slightly dated now, but I still enjoy it

Sounds kinda cliche now, but I get that it was probably a banger when it released

Unos heroes del rock quisieron hacer pop y les salió muy bien, que no opinen los puristas, excelente sonido, escuchar las cuerdas de eddie es barnizar tus oidos, y no solo con la guitarra, hits muy clásicos

4 liked songs: - Jump - Panama - Hot For Teacher - I'll Wait

Probably my favorite hard rock album. Between Roth's vocals and Eddie's guitars and keyboard, there is an unmatched level of thrill and hysteria. It's loud and exciting, with each track showing off in some new impressive way. So many tracks I love. "Panama" is of course a masterpiece, but "Jump" and "Hot for the Teacher" are also classics that you can't just ignore if playing in the background of a bar. This is songwriting that grabs your attention.

Kind of cool

Jump and panama

fun to finally listen to a classic

Classic. I think I overlistened this.

Very good album. Eddies guitar never dissapoints.

5/5 - Iconic; The definition of 80's hard rock

All right, I get the hype.

This album has a ton of great tracks, ranging from synthy to metal to party anthems. Not every track was a winner, but in general the album is extremely fun.

Awesome. Front to back. Not very long either!

This is the first time I have listened to a van Halen album the whole way through. It was enjoyable, but I will probably stick to the singles from this one in the future.

Svängig hårmetal med grisigt attityd.

Real good some classics that I now what album they belong to

I regret that all the spandex and incessant radio plays distracted me from this great album for so long.

Hard to find an album that's more 80's white America than this, so if that's your thing you've lucked out with this one.

Man, this is almost as good as their first album. It's just hit after hit for, like, 8 straight songs. I even like 1984 as the opener. But it all comes crashing down on House of Pain. It was like a precursor to the generic rock years with Sammy Hagar. But still, very solid.

Some good tracks but a bit overblown compared to their first 3 albums

Kennt ma ja

The songs still sound fantastic, some brilliant tracks on here and no filler. Some of really creative songwriting and playing and technically amazing too. Also in Jump has one of the all time classic 80s rock songs. Great album.

First van halen album I've listen to. Great stuff.

VH. Dang, I love these guys. One of the most fun, energetic, innovative pop/rock/metal-esque (kind of sort of, at times) bands I've heard. It's hard to pen any praise of EVH because anything I have to say feels too, I don't know, pedestrian and trite. I'm a bumbling beginner guitarist who high-fives himself when I remember how to play a major scale properly or plays through a medium-tempo 4-chord song with only a few slips, then I put on any song with EVH on guitar and I feel like I've been transported to another semi-comprehensible dimension inhabited by some form of demigods and demigoddesses whose very beings are entangled completely with the Music of the Spheres. And, honestly, sure, there are countless amazing guitarists in all eras, but it's Eddie's genuine joy he shares when playing that is the most infectious aspect of his musicianship to me. Play on, Eddie -- I know you always will! This album has some of Van Halen's most memorable songs, among many memorable songs across quite a nice catalog of albums. Great one to have on this list.

Coole gitarrenriffs, jump hebt sich deutlich ab

I couldn't take it anymore, silly, over the top shredding rock. I listened to in the 80's and seemingly has not aged well. Pure cheese.

Solid, nice length, great drumming and guitars, and energetic guitars, although some dated synths and odd subjects

Awesome Album. Face melting guitar and drums.

A great album that showed Van Halen’s proficiency with the synth. R.I.P Eddie, lost a real O.G

i mean it’s fine

piriripiriripirirpiruuru pam pamparampamparamfuoo panama panama a panama panama a o o o o

An amazing album - Van Halen at their top. It was despised by some people when it first came out, but with Sammy Hagar's entrance, the band grabbed the 80s sound by the horns and really combined their hard rock sound into it. They managed to walk a middle road where everyone could jam to it. There is a song for everyone on this album - not one bad song on it. There is a reason why it became classic rock as soon as it was released - they knew it would be seen as classic. 9/10

Pretty good for HM

Well, that album when downhill fast. The guitar-drive, heavy metal pop work really well through the first few tracks on 1984, but things fall apart after Panama. The first track is a great lead up to the record, but the rest just feels empty. Eddie Van Halen's guitar talent is undeniable, but David Lee Roth is hilariously incompetent as a frontman/lyricist. Fav Tracks: Panama, Jump, 1984 Rating 2.5/5

Well, that was a ride! I appreciate the inclusion of this record on the list because it feels like a distilled representation of Van Halen and the sort of glam/hair metal scene they represent. And it brings the hits. Eddie's guitar work is otherworldly, but I can't stand David Lee Roth's vocals and inane lyrics. 2.5/5 Favourite tracks: "Panama" and "Jump"

Impressive and I understand the historical context. Not my style. Skipped through most songs. I didn’t skip the first, third, and fifth songs. Like a chord...

Woohoo! Only 33 minutes long and has the best Van Halen songs.

Never really listened to this guy, Jump is a classic though, heard that before. Sounds a bit ACDC at times, no doubt inspired them. Also sounds a bit Aerosmith, they may have inspired this guy. Easy a 3/5.

até q eh daora

Wasn’t too impressed at first, but then I really enjoyed and appreciated the crossover of metal and synths

The songs still sound fantastic, some brilliant tracks on here and no filler. Some of really creative songwriting and playing and technically amazing too. Also in Jump has one of the all time classic 80s rock songs. Great album.

Heb ik niet veel mee.

It’s so lame. Accept the guitar, the guitar is great.

Yeah it's more mainstream (not that VH were ever the hipster's choice) and synth-heavy, but wow so good top-to-bottom. The band are in top form, and I confess to loving this album as a kid. My only regret is that by the time I saw them live they were in full Hagar.

An absolute blast! 80's energy melting my face.

I love a lot of 80s hard rock but this just felt built specifically for MTV. Jump is a great throwaway tune and I like Panama but the rest of it left me totally cold

Only listened to a bit. Jump!

Lots of familiar songs, the songs are alright but not sure I'd be in the mood to just sit and listen to the whole album.

This may be my quickest review so far. Firstly, I pretty much detest all 80’s ’hair’ metal. Considering 95% of music this genre produced is nothing like metal it should instead be called ‘men in drag singing shitty lyrics’ rock n roll. Secondly, whenever I see track listings with song names like ‘Hot For Teacher’ and ‘Drop Dead Legs’ it literally induces vomit to rise into my mouth. Thirdly, this album includes both these descriptions and I hated every f@cking second of it. Well that’s not entirely true...’Jump’ is ok. I guess one out of nine ain't bad? There is sooooo much of this rinse and repeat crap rock music from this era I seriously do not see how anyone can distinguish between them. For example Poison, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Motley Crüe, etc could all record this album and even die hard fans, I doubt, would know the difference. To summarise...this album and the genre it belongs too should be sealed in a large container and buried in a secret location...never to be found and/or opened again. 0 Stars!

Very good noder

Boring and didn’t hold my attention but glad it was quite a short album.

Best album cover ever

Quite enjoyable 80s tunes. But would likely not buy album or put in library so giving it a 3.

Kort en krachtig album! Favoriet nummer: 'Hot for Teacher'

Enjoyed every minute of it. Wouldn't mind having it on repeat

Bfjekdnfbrksk JUMP

Hot for Teacher alone gets it 3 stars.

A day in the studio for these guys is like: "Okay I've just written this sick guitar solo...how can we make a song out of it!?". Admittedly, this music is really good, and the guitars sound really good. They've got some really nice rock sound out of their guitars, similar to Guns N Roses and Queen. They write excellent guitar riffs, and some catchy hooks too, but I do lose interest when it's just fast guitar shredding and not much else going on in the album (like the last two songs). Tough one to rate. Not that bothered about listening again so will go for 4.4 stars rounded to 4

Classic stadium rock

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 11/20 Innovation: 12/20 Presence of pure bangers: 15/20 Emotional response: 15/20 =62 Really enjoyed that lads

Classic but not my favorite

Aguanté hasta la quinta canción y lo quité. Menudo rollo.

It's the best showcase of Van Halen's instrumental prowess as a band, the best showcase for Diamond Dave's glorious shtick, the best showcase for their songwriting, just their flat-out best album overall.

Classic of an era!! it'd be 4,5.. but the good songs are just too good!!

Jump is cool! :)

All songs from this album are classical. A great album with only one notable drawback: it sounds a little bit dated, probably because it is a reference album for almost every rock band nowadays. However, worth every song!

Very good, and great memories!

First song nice

Wird nicht besser mit mir und van halen

Great tracks and moments here and there, but a bit inconsistent. Love “Jump” and “Panama” since I was a kid. “Hot For Teacher” had a fire ass solo, loved it.

Cool classic album. I'm not super into hard rock but as far as that goes, this is really solid. Loads of character.

A whole album of Van Halen is.....a lot of Van Halen

While the first album was guitar heavy with the focus in EVH, this album has the better songs. However, the debut album is collectively better as the songs on it better relate to one another. Overall, it is the same rating as the first. I don’t think Van Halen got any better or worse as a band with this album. Despite a slight stylistic change. RIP to the goat.

Bueno, rock típico ochentero, rozando el spray-rock. Los 80 le cayó muy mal al rock que no pasó por el punk.

I enjoyed it, but it seemed like the recording itself was a little rough. Also, other than the main hits, none of it really hooked me. It was ok. EVH is still insane though. Favorite tracks: “Jump,” “Panama, and “Hot For Teacher”

Hair metal has never been my thing, though jump is very fun

Hair metal done right.

This album is just the songs Jump and Hot for Teacher. It's alright. And boy is eddie good at soloing. But there's not much elsewhere.

loved it. awesome album

HEY YOU. Who said that??? We’ll never, ever know.

Yeah, fine - I have no strong feelings about this one way or the other. Fave track - "Jump"

I enjoyed it especially because there were quite a few songs I knew and liked, but never knew they were in this album by this group.

Boo yah Ooooo RAH Solid album Reckon I love old rock now A few non perfect ones but still great

A classic. What's not to like?

Decent classic rock. Nothing exciting, mostly pleasant. 6/10

Fun to blast. Great car ride music. Great choice for a hardrock metal album from the 80s

I've heard most of these songs individually but never together. I'm not a fan.

Panama is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Diamond Dave is magnetic and magnificent. Eddie just fucking rips and his guitar makes me unbelievably happy.

Great drums and guitar work. Not a fan of synth and DLR vocals. Favorite Tracks: I'll Wait

Too many nonsensical guitar solos, didn't find much structure

What would now be considered classic rock n roll, this helped define dads of the generation, allowing parents to be mad at kids for yet another thing. Van Halen is a genre-setting band, and no one can deny the amount of radio play they got and still continue to get. Eddie has some great shreds from this album, but its hard to appreciate all of this when it constantly reminds you of riding back home from a camp outing in the back of the truck with your dad mad at you because you didnt tie the knots right. Favorite song, Hot for Teacher. Least favorite, hearing Hot for Teacher get played in ads for Snickers bars.

This not at all what i expected. what a blast.

Good ol' rock 'n' roll. It's neither very hard nor very pop-y. Perfectly balanced as all things should be.

Has not really aged well, and generally just feels a bit daft. Still, Jump is kind of fun in a kitsch way. Okay but actually I'm enjoying it :(.

Jump has been a hitsong in the Neteherlands. It still like to listen to this song once in a while.

I understand and respect why some people think this album is great. Perhaps colored by hearing my brother (and MTV) playing this endlessly when I was a kid, I just cannot get into it. Rockin' jams, great guitar playing, but it just always feels like unimportant and uninspired music to me. I supposed I could find things in my library that I love that might also seem unimportant, but that's where I land on this one. It's not a dish I'd partake in very often.

Glam metal, man. Some of the tunes here hold up well, some don’t. This has arguably my favorite Van Halen song on it, but I don’t come back to this album that often really. The guitar tones by Eddie Van Halen are pretty crazy on this album but I prefer Van Halen 1 I think. Favorite song: Panama Least favorite song: I’ll Wait

I mean the big hits on this one are huge and the rest of the album hold up very well

Memories

Jump is a good song, rest inoffensive

Had none of what made VH good.

Great album. Maybe I'm just a sucker for 1980's rock. Contains such great hits as Jump, Panama, and Hot For Teacher.

Pretty good record. Panama, Jump... hot for teacher.

First track to last, this is a classic.

Still hot for teacher

A classic rock/metal album. Van Halen really mastered the art of fusing metal and pop to create anthems that would appeal to a wide audience. And of course, Eddie's guitar playing is incredible - an innovator who spawned millions of copycats, and influenced guitar players everywhere. And despite all the imitators, he remained inimitable. Eddie always sounded like Eddie. Only criticism is that the album is over too quickly. Some might think a few of the lyrics are a bit questionable, but they were never meant to be taken too seriously. Van Halen were ridiculous and over the top, but they knew it and embraced it. It's unfortunate that a lot of the bands that followed in their wake didn't seem to get the joke.

Overrated

This is the kind of rock I grew up with.. very big on Much Music. And it was just everywhere on the radio. It's good simple power cords music about sex and parties

Much better than expected. Especially enjoyed Jump

Decent album however the guitar playing, whil excellent, was less of a focus on this album which didn't help the album

Nice guitar licks

Familiar songs. 80s rock

Better than I expected but not really my ‘world’.

eddie :(

I couldn't get the memory of dancing around to this in my living room when I was like five years old out of my head. Five stars.

The album where they added synthesizers. The rest, as they say, is history. Best track: Panama

I really, really love this album. I always mowed to it but listening to it in this context really helped me to appreciate the musical brilliance that they brought to the table. Combining super heavy rock licks with the sort of new wave/synth pop sound feels really natural now but had to have been shocking when it came out. I really, really, like this album. RIP EVH.

80s guitar wankery gets old, but Eddie Van Halen brings a distinctive groove to his playing that makes musically intricate songs danceable.

This was energetic and bold. I don't know if I liked that, though.

An exuberant pop record, best during certain guitar passages. For the most part, the band keeps up the energy with speed. I think the small attempts at sonic variety (for example in the opener) end up a bit flat without more variation in form.

5/21 Some good ass rock. Standout Tracks: Panama, Top Jimmy, Hot for Teacher, House of Pain

Brewed a Session IPA during this album. Very hair, very 80s. Not exactly my favorite style, but dig the talent of the group.
