The forest is so good
"A Forest" is my all-time favorite track from The Cure, and the whole album sounds like it could have been built around "A Forest". My 2nd favorite track on this album is "Play for Today". I recommend this album as both good background music, and for a deep listen with headphones on in the dark to enjoy the entire soundscape. I'm selecting a rating of 4, but the actual value is 4.5
Less ‘pop’ Cure and maybe their most goth album, it is haunting, sparse and quite off kilter; best known track A Forest a good example of this disorientation. Play For Today, M & Seventeen Seconds are great standalone tracks but this is definitely a start to finish listen.

Standout Tracks: Secrets A Forest M Seventeen Seconds At Night Three
Super goth and dark, but also reminded me of modern dream-pop-y bands with the chorus tone on the guitar. Yes, I realize the Cure came first, but that's just what came to mind. A Forest is really good.

I really like The Cure. But I have to say I prefer their later, poppier, more polished work. This album was darker and colder and lacked any stand-out hits. But it was still good and an interesting listen.

I have always had a soft spot for The Cure, but without ever listening to a full album the jury was still out on them as a complete package (from my point of view). If this album is a taste of things to come though...I’m in all the way! I absolutely love this offering. So many tracks to get the juices flowing...so to speak. To me it encompasses everything a ‘new wave’ album should be. It’s beautifully hypnotic and electronically brilliant. Man...did I say I love this album? Sounds of eighties alt pop rock ring truer than ever and you can absolutely lose yourself in these emotion filled tracks. They flow so seamlessly together, it’s like they were always meant to be. You’re truely missing out if you never at least listen to this album once in your lifetime. 5 Stars!!
The Cure songs I enjoy tend to be a little more upbeat, which is unfortunate because this album is not. It's still really good, I just found myself getting a little bored by it as it went on Saved: Play For Today, A Forest

I personally would've liked a couple more hooks (especially since I know the Cure is capable of it), but that's clearly not what this album is shooting for. In terms of quality this is at least a 4, but it's not really for me. Does the job of creating a foreboding and uneasy atmosphere though, so I'll give it a 3.
Late 80s Cure > early 80s Cure. But still loved it.

The majority of this album has aged well. Wiki tells that this LP featured a new bass player; his melodic bass lines are a feature. Talk about hitting the ground running.

It was pretty good. There weren’t that many songs that stuck out to me. It seemed to be pretty chill overall and kind of spacey.

Felt pretty “fine.” Not a bad listen but didn’t keep my interest for the whole thing. Forgot I was listening to it around track 6 or 7.
So much of a vibe that the hooks get kind of buried, but there are so many hints of inspiration and legacy hidden throughout and it’s so daring to go over a minute before any vocals are heard
Worse than average.
Whilst I knew and loved their albums; "Head on the door", "Disintegration" and "Pornography", I don't think I've ever listened to this. Its a lot more indie than the aforementioned works. you can kinda tell they are heading for greatness ("a forest is sensational"), but in this they haven't quite arrived yet. 3/5

Really dreary and boring. Almost put me to sleep.
Gloomy & sparse. I find the intros to the songs catchy (esp the first two + Forest) but Smith’s voice over the minimalist tracks doesn’t do it for me in the long run. That said, they were a boon for personal hair care products in the 80s.
Too repetitive, but with great personality
Although from 1980 (OMG 40 yrs old!) this holds up pretty well against other albums eg Pulp's Hardcore which I couldn't get thru. This album has the hallmark early goth/new wave sound that was prevalent in the day and they did it better than anyone else. Not their best but a sign of even greater things to come
Took me back to the ‘craft
Crazy disappointing album. Half the thing is basically crappy instrumentals and the other has lyrics but whenever there are lyrics you can't even hear them. Was looking forward to this one too... 1/10.
Snoooooooooze! This album was so boring. No interesting songs. I kept thinking we were about to go into Whip It by DIVO.
Very cohesive new wave/post-punk album with great atmosphere, showing the beginnings of gothic rock. 9/10
Great blend of gothic and electronic melancholy. The minimalist structure combined with the reverb turned up to 11 creates an intense, melodic atmosphere in the recording. It accompanies Robert Smith’s voice brilliantly. This album really shows the start of The Cure’s rise to legendary status.
Sad core, jam band esque, vocals echo in the distance
The cure provides good background music, but I wasn't blown away by this album.

Great album, there's something about the old punky rock which is both relaxing and exciting at the same time. I love the ability to turn it up and rock it out

this was not on my radar, despite my admiration for the cure. it was great to hear, and honestly, it was great to have an excuse to listen to something besides disintegration by them, that kinda being my go-to
I liked this album, especially the song 'M'. I could hear how they influenced a lot of other future bands and artists - specifically Nirvana and Kanye West came to mind

I'm fond of the Cure, although not to the extent of having ever purchased an album. This was fine, lovely in places, but maybe needed a little more variation in tone.

I still want to like the cure, but the reality of actually listening to them makes me bored and depressed.
"Play for Today" is an instant post pop punk classic for me. "In Your House" and "A Forest" are good too. Title track is fantastic. A lot of chorus on the guitars. Great 8th note bass lines throughout, makes you wanna dance. Constant melody on the guitar underscored by the vocal melodies. I'm very happy I found this album.

I like The Cure but didn't catch any specific song on this album except 2-3 that I know from earlier. Nice album but not the one I would recommend.
Seventeen seconds is the amount of time I listened before checking out. It's a 35 minute album that feels much, much longer. Aggressively boring. Best track: M
What a strange listen. I know the band is capable of better songs, but it seems they aren't exactly going for songs. However, the soundscapes, while almost carried by solid musicianship, are too scattered and far outside The Cure's wheelhouse. The strangeness and some high points are enjoyable, but this would work far better as an outtakes disk than as an LP.

Emo electro-rock.
I know this is going to be a mix of goth and new wave, and I'm kinda off new wave but like a bit of goth. I know I've heard "A Forest" before but can't remember anything about it beyond thinking "yep, sounds like the cure" so here goes... Ok this is pretty fuckin cool. I guess this is early goth at its best? I know it pre-dates anything else I've heard in the genre. Best comparison I can think of is the first Ministry album, but that sounds terrible by comparison. I can hear how the idea of "goth" hasn't separated from punk/new wave just yet (particularly in the singing and drums) but the guitars have that gloomy chorus/reverb/flanger quality to them that new wave never really does, and it's all... mopey, even when there's a kinda "dancey" new wave beat going on. Apart from that and a bit of a pop punk tinge to the singing there's really nothing upbeat about it. It's maybe a bit cheesy in 2021, but I can hear where tons of bands (particularly 80s rock/punk) got their chord progressions and clean guitar tones from. There's not as much singing as I expected, lots of extended instrumental sections or songs where there are only like 2 lines of lyrics, and unless he really sings a chorus it's hard to hear the words, not quite a mumble but more of a whine, and whoever produced it didn't isolate the vocal frequencies very well. This is kinda strange as I always figured Smith was a "frontman's frontman" and would've wanted to be more prominent, although maybe that came later. Honestly, this has inspired me to pick up my guitar and start writing goth melodies haha. This is a solid 4, maybe even a 5.
