I thought there was something wrong with the recording I was listening to when the vocals for Secrets and Three were barely audible. Apparently that's on purpose, and I hate it. Aside from that, there were a couple of decent tunes on here, but likely not an album I'm going to come back to often. 2.4/5

If I was a goth girl I'd say this makes my clit twitch. I feel like omi could crank these tracks out on garage band in a day. There's some trancey vibe I like on songs like a forest but not The Cures best album.

The music was good, but I didn't like the vocals. And honestly it was quite boring overall.

Kinda felt like generic alt rock without a clear soul. Maybe it's just me though.

I don’t know, it seems like there are way too many albums by The Cure on this list. This one was fine, made for decent background music while I worked, but this is the 3rd or 4th of their albums that I can remember… apples to oranges I know, but still, 1 Clash album thus far and have we reviewed a single Ramones album yet? I digress, this one was fine, 2 stars I guess.

A two for being early influencers of lots of horrible followers . However, there are so many magnificent bands from this era that these guys rate low on the list.

I still don't enjoy Cure, I've no idea why since I usually like moody, brooding and dark themed music. I think it's the makebelief nature of the band's goth image. To me it feels like moody teen trying to assure others he is not having a good time or something to that effect. A Forest is a nice 80's pop song, rest of the album was pretty much wasted on me.

I like The Cure, but this never got out of first gear. It only really got out of first gear when the seventh song on the album started, but then quickly decided that first gear was where it was going to stay for the rest.

A bit bored and underwhelmed with the record Can hear bits and pieces of what was to come but it was a bit one note for me

Why is THIS album on the list. There are at least 5 better Cure albums. Other than A Forest the songs are painfully average and the limited production does not make for a compelling listen in 2025. It doesn't have the immediacy of the prior album or the pop grandeur of future releases. Leaves me wanting more.

Seventeen Seconds is a fine album—it has its moments, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark as one of the greats. There are flashes of brilliance, especially in its atmosphere and mood, but those are often offset by stretches that feel flat or forgettable. It's an important step in The Cure’s evolution, laying the groundwork for what would come, but it doesn’t showcase the band at their peak. As far as “greatest albums” go? I’d say probably not. There are stronger, more complete statements elsewhere in their catalog.

Seventeen seconds is enough. I'm in the minority but I think this is uninteresting dreary boring music.

It's about as depressing as I remembered. The songs blend together. Robert Smith's voice is as memorable as it always was

After just having heard a new-to-me Cure song a couple days ago (that I loved), I was pumped to see this pop up on the generator. Unfortunately, I left feeling pretty underwhelmed with the listen as only Play for Today and A Forest give me anything to really come back to on this.

Never really been a huge fan of The Cure. Enjoy that there is a fair bit of instrumental on the album but nothing particularly grabbing or exciting me. Just a kind of steady meandering with that undeniable vocal sound. Atmospheric and spacey and can actually hear some Bloc Party vibes in this. Never really realised the influence on them before. Pretty bored by the end and ‘At Night’ felt like a fitting slog to begin to end things off and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ delivered the final blow. (2.5)

i like and respect the cure and they have a bunch of good songs, but i generally think their albums are meandering and boring.

The Cure has much better songs and records. I think I can understand this album's inclusion as a starting point to get there but not sure I would have included it. Feels very experimental and strange. Maybe key on the band's development, but not necessarily important in a larger context. 2 1=Crap that shouldn't be here 2=I didn't like it but get why it's here 3=I thought it was ok or even like it, get why it's here, but won't revisit 4=I like it, will revisit 5=This is some of the best music I've ever heard and will continue listening to it

Seems like a very experimental album. Not a lot of lyrics, and very surprising to find that the hit off of this album "The Forest" is almost five minutes long...quite a bit longer than standard radio play time for its era. This definitely has that trademark "The Cure" sound, but some of it comes across more as "noise" than "music". Not really a huge fan of this album, although I don't generally mind The Cure. This was early on for them so it's interesting to see how much they grew as they went. Not an album I'd want to listen to again, but it wasn't straight terrible.

They’re a band I should love, but I just can’t get into The Cure no matter how hard I have tried. They’ve a few singles I quite like, but I’ve got to admit they’re not a band for me: the instruments are so soaked in chorus it just sounds cheesy, and I don’t really care for Robert Smith’s singing. This album didn’t really change my mind on them, but I think I may have a better chance with some of their later albums. This was just a slog.

Kind of gothic-y, sparse. Though I like the sound, there's not a lot going on here, no real reason to return to it.

It’s chill, but I feel like it only came truly alive sporadically (notably with A Forest). It’s moments of glimmering vibes lost in a mostly forgettable album as a whole.

Seems like they're still trying to find their sound in this one. Full of mostly emotive soundscapes.

Would I listen to it again? Maybe not. Has my opinion changed after finding out the lead singer and songwriter is an anti-natalist weirdo? Maybe. But I do actually like the instrumentation. Especially on 'A Forest'. It is very atmospheric, and I probably enjoyed the parts without vocals the most and maybe it would be better served as an instrumental piece. The bottom line is that I'm pretty sure we can embrace every piece of music and love it as if we ourselves had made it / are the one who is generating it right now as it is heard. But I haven't done that and I don't like his misanthropic gothy southern-accent-having ass.

I’m between a two and a three… I don’t really harbor much in the way of negative feelings towards this album, but there’s not really that much I liked either. SMH. This is the same story as Rod Stewart's Gasoline Alley (oddly, also his second album). Considering all the Silver, Gold, and Platinum certifications The Cure's OTHER albums have received, it's pretty stupid that THIS one was chosen as (one of?) their representative(s) on this list. If Wikipedia is to be believed, this challenge "compiles writings and information on albums chosen by a panel of music critics to be the most important, influential, and best in popular music between the 1950s and the 2010s." If that's so, then the selection of this album, like Gasoline Alley from Stewart's library, is a tone-deaf blunder by the admin. I'd give this entry a 1 in protest, too, but I actually do own this album and like The Cure too much to fully penalize them for the failure of others.

I like a lot of Cure songs. Three Imaginary Boys is an incredible album. I really tried to get into Seventeen Seconds but it just kind of faded into the background. I actually listened to this album 3x without realizing it was replaying. It was just like....nothing.

Tired of singing? Just let the gloomy instrumentals drone on.

One of those albums that serve as a conveyor belt with seemingly the same songs, saved by some slick guitar riffs. Favorite Track: "Three"(which isn't track three).

This wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. There are great foundations of songs here, but they felt very stagnant for much of them. Like....please develop into something. Some of the songs sounded more like soundscapes than anything. Liked Songs: "Play For Today" , "A Forest" , "M"

A somewhat dark, brooding, gothic post-punk album. Lots of ambience and soundscapes, but feels more simple and shallow compared to the paradoxically foreboding warmth that they develop on later albums (say, Disintegration). Nor are the songs strong or catchy enough to create ear worms like their poppier efforts. Overall this is ok - it shows where The Cure is headed and was perhaps a still novel sound at release, but it doesn’t capture the enveloping sounds and memorable melodies that this band grew to be known for. In essence, it just doesn’t stand the test of time when you know what else The Cure are capable of achieving.

They're just so DULL. Three, The Final Sound and A Forest were cool though. Aka the ones where he is not/barely singing. In fact the sound in general in the ones after those are good - it would have made a good atmospheric like trance album.

These songs play over 'B roll' of a city in the opening shots of a movie. You think it's groovy and you like the riff, then it fades out when the main character is introduced. It turns out that's a good thing.

I like the actual music but not a fan of the singer's voice.

Interesting musically, particularly the first part of the album. I feel like R.E.M.'s Murmur is sort of a spiritual cousin, but whereas that album feels lush and inspired, this one feels like an experiment. The vocals are too far away, the drums too teched up almost sounding like a drum machine. I like some darkness, but the mood here is intense.

Not a huge fan of The Cure outside of some of their mainstream hits. Very dark and moody, and frankly at this point of my life I don't need that sort of thing. However, there was a time when I would have found that appealing. I have never understood the ethereal instrumentals though.

The cure isn't a bad that I have liked a lot before. Its not that I dislike anything in particular about them its more that I don't get the appeal and their songs don't stick with me. While I haven't listened to an entire album like I did today my opinion is still the same. I cant quite put my finger on it but I just don't vibe with this music at all.

Some early music from the Cure. They have a distinctive style even in this early album. However, this was quite mundane and unexciting for me. Not something I’d listen to over and over.

Another band that im glad the list surfaces, but I just dont appreciate (yet). I dig some of The Cures hits, so im sure my interest is there, but hardly any of Seventeen Seconds stuck with me. Maybe Secrets and In Your House (genuinely didnt like A Forest) were my only tracks I liked and not merely tolerated From reading the album wiki, I discovered that this was more or less the Cure’s sound defining album with a lot of band member changes happening beforehand. So I guess thats cool to have the context.

'Strangers / Nobody knows we love' (from 'Secrets') is a moving summary of this album's evocation of loneliness. But that triumph doesn't persist. It's not that it's too dark - it's that the darkness is uninteresting and finally w/o the quality of what makes dejected art a buoy for a suffering mind and body. The storytelling is weak, the production feeble. Maybe their other records are more developed, but this stagnates w/ no howl - not for me.

Another Radiohead like experience. I see the album and get excited. "Oh, I've listened to plenty of this band, this will be fun to listen to a whole album." Then the listening experience: "ohhh... oh... this isn't so much music as ambient noise to play quietly in the background when you just need something to ignore. "

I grew up with parents that loved The Cure. I got excited when I saw we had a The Cure album today and was looking forward to it. I listened to a The Cure a lot but I think it was mostly greatest hits. Honestly I was quite bored and unimpressed with this one and I was kind of confused why it made it on the list. Lots of repetition but with very simple riffs and drumming. If you're going to be repetitive you need more interesting things going on and more layers.

Seventeen seconds felt like 17 hours of a record failing to pique my interest. Between the boring vocals and droning instrumentals, this record felt like it was going nowhere. I have one Cure album in the collection, 'disintegration'. Looking at the tracklist, I only know 'A Forest' and it's a brilliant tune, so looking forward to hearing the rest. ......... One thing I've always liked about Cure recordings is the depth. Smith's vocals are right in your ear but other parts of the track sound like they're a million miles away. It's very moody and sparse which I have to be in the mood for. Enjoyed 'Play for Today' and 'A Forest'... much of the rest is similar in tone and atmosphere but not being added to the 'liked songs' playlist. I reckon if I'd found this when I was 13 or 14, I could have gotten very into it and my life would have been different.

I kinda like this album, it's not the best but not the worst. I think you should listen to the song "A Forest" it's my favorite song on the album. Mainly because I like the background. I can't really understand what they say, but I can make it out. If you listen to this on YouTube, there's no CC, so it's hard to hear what they say. I recommend you pull up the lyrics on Google if you want to know what they say. I do recommend that you listen to this album, but their voices sound whiney.

This album could be better. I do like the beat and rhythm, and I also kind of like the genre. I dislike the fact there aren't many lyrics, (mainly just beat) and the lyrics are hard to understand.

While I am a fan of The Cure, I am not sure why this album is on this list.

This is fine, but it's quite dull. It really sounds like one super-long song, in part due to overuse of the drum machine, in part due to their tendency to hang on a four-chord sequence for a hell of a long time, and in part due to the consistency in their timbre. They just don't have a lot of variability, and to me it really sounds like they're not having any fun. I'm not looking for wild improvisation here (although that's cool too), but like they don't even stray off the beat at all, it's super-square. Here's a simple test: play the first fifteen seconds of any song on this CD and see if you can tell which one is which. I thought hard about giving this a one. At the end of the day though, it's so light and inoffensive that it doesn't really merit it. But make no mistake, this CD sucks.

This album had all the excitement of attending a goth kids TED talk. It just droned on an on. I kinda liked the sound of it but they never changed it up or tried to do any variations on their core concepts. Pretty disappointing.

Be careful what I say, I guess. (See previous review: Depeche Mode’s “Violator”) I don’t know what I expected. I guess I thought I’d be getting a lot of stuff like “Friday I’m in Love,” stuff on the poppier side of rock. But no. I got this dark, tormented-poet, moody new wave album. I would’ve preferred the poppier stuff. I’ve never really dug the whole “look at how emotionally tormented I am” kind of sound and vibe. Like, sorry you’re going through that but it makes your music boring as hell to listen to. The first indicator of what I was in for came right away - the first track. Who the hell opens an album with that? Seriously? You can’t go anywhere from there and have it make sense or gel. From there it was moody track after moody track. If you’d added ambient rain sounds underneath each track it would’ve fit the vibe perfectly. Sometimes it is, sometimes it ties the whole sound together. Not here, not now. Very curious to see how many Cure albums are here. I assume at least one more. Hopefully they found some light in their lives. Two stars. Standout Tracks: A Forest, M

Didn’t like this when it came out and don’t like it any better now. Too much whining.

I think I like The Cure but I am only familiar with the hits and not familiar with their early work at all. This might be the one New Wave band I like. This is like a less intense version of The Cure I'm familiar with. Robert Smith is going to Robert Smith though. This is not the kind of music I expected or am used to from The Cure. They definitely took a hard turn towards the mainstream later or at least put their more crowd friendly songs out as singles. A forest could have been repurposed as a James Bond song, work in the fanfare somewhere and you can replace one of those Timothy Dalton Bond songs, no one would miss A-ha or Gladys Knight. The band that spawned 1,000 goth looks. I bet the Venn diagram of people who own The Cure t-shirts perfectly overlaps with people who own Morrissey t-shirts.

I like the Cure but this was a boring album

Unfortunately, this is the least memorable Cure album I've ever heard.

I have no problem with slow burn albums that build tension gradually. As long as there is a payoff. This album felt like 35 minutes of build-up, and decent at times, but with no climax. I gave it three goes and none of it grabbed my attention at all. Fine for the background but not enough... happened?

There's Disintegration, and there's the rest of The Cure's catalogue.

Some people really enjoy early Cure. I prefer The Head in the Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, and Disintegration.

Idk I just don't really get new wave or post punk which I see this is labelled as. There are at least a couple tracks that do grab my attention which makes me wonder if I will like their later stuff a little more. The Forest, Seventeen Seconds, and Three intrigued me. We shall see! That all said this definitely feels like a worthwhile listen as I can just tell this inspired many moody goth albums to come!

This album is forgettable.

I never really understood what the fuzz was all about. There were some nice songs by The Cure, but overall at the time I found their approach to "melancholy" and "depression" a rather mediocre teenage phantasy of the real pain. These days I simply find them outdated and aged poorly and it definitely has not grown on me and it remains as it was: boring instead of melancholic.

Fine at best, not unique enough to be deserving of a 1000 albums list at worst. Probably helped the onset of shoegaze as a genre but who cares

It’s definitely stark, but it’s also kind of boring and rudimentary. The Cure needed this album to continue developing their sound, but I don’t think anyone really needs it in their life on a regular basis. Would rather listen to Joy Division.

I can hear how this influenced an array of artists - gorillaz , U2, artic monkeys to name just a few — but I did not enjoy this at all. The vocals, when they’re even there, are tinny and thin. Listened to: hiking up Acatenango. Favorite track: The Forest (how fitting!)

I can’t think of a way to describe this album besides “mostly interludes.” It felt like I was constantly waiting for an actual song to start and it only did a couple times.

Picked up with The Forest. M is also alright. Others a bit homogenous/boring.

Nah, not for me. Never really liked The Cure beyond that song from The Crow.

I've never really known how to take the cure. Depending on the day I can find them incredible or awful. This album sits somewhere between the two

This album was boring. None of the songs stuck out to me, I felt like I was listening to the same thing for the whole thing. I didn't think the music was bad or something I couldn't listen to but my God it just never changed.

Listened to this while playing Imperium Classics. I lost. I don't blame the album...but it also didn't help. I wanted this to be more interesting, but it kinda fell flat for me. I'm sure there are other Cure albums that I would enjoy much more than this one.

Wanted a whole lot more from this one - liked the spooky, off-kilter ambiance in the instrumentals, but there’s little thematic direction and the LP kind of loses itself. It just ended without much fanfare and I wanted more!

I'm not sure why this Cure album was picked, I am not a huge cure fan but isn't disintegration a much much better album?

I don't think I am much of a fan of the Cure, but I really disliked this album more than I expected

I was really disappointed in this album and wish is was only 17 seconds long. It's sad and boring. Not their best work at all.

2/5. I thought there was a valiant effort, simple yet innovative. The goth new wave scene feels in its early stages and I appreciate the creative ventures but it does not age well. It's not terrible to listen to but not super enjoyable either. Below average in my opinion.

Meh, the Cure …..

A Forest is the only redeeming song in this album for me. Sorry Robert Smith.

Definitely a vibe on this record - minimal, stoic, dark. A Forest is the standout track; the synths and guitars sound great, and the song has some memorable melodies and harmonies (which the album for the most part lacks otherwise). Ultimately - the album is just too one-note to make for a great album experience.

This album, while The Cure is wildly popular and nostalgic, did not do it for me.

From everything I had heard from The Cure, I expected this album to be depressing. What I didn't expect it to be was boring. But with the exception of A Forest, that's what it was. Perhaps you have to be in a suicidal funk before you can appreciate it, I don't know. But if you're looking for interesting music or lyrics, this isn't it.

Previously rated: Pornography (2/5) ********************* I called the Pornography album "echo-heavy, depressing sounding muck." This one wasn't quite that bad, but still nothing very good either. There's nothing that sounds like their hits. I immediately played Boys Don't Cry after listening to this and wondered why nothing on the album was anywhere near this good.

Honestly, I listened to it twice and felt similarly both times… it’s fine, but kind of boring, unmemorable, and uninventive. The Cure has better stuff. I liked a few of the songs, but overall I was unimpressed… I prefer their poppier stuff.

I much prefer the cuts I've heard off of Disintegration to what is presented here, but this album's brevity is certainly to its advantage. I never felt particularly bored listening, and tracks like A Reflection, which reminds me of certain pieces of the Fate/Stay Night OST, and the biggest hit on the album A Forest were definite highlights. However, I don't think full records of this post-punk/new wave sound (WHAT is even the difference man) are my cup of tea. I hope the inevitable Disintegration appearance can change my mind.

Pretty dull album, nothing I'll revisit outside of possibly A Forest. Middling 2.

I was never into the Cure. It's fine. I like a lit of stuff influenced by the cure.

This gothic, dark sound must've been really new back in the early 1980s. Still, I found this album pretty boring, and I didn't like some of the production, songwriting and singing on this album...

I quite like The Cure but this is a poor effort. It felt really lazy compared to what they're capable of.

Stone cold two. Thought about an added star for them not liking Morrissey and it being short but couldn't.

No matter how hard I try I cannot enjoy the Cure. The music is great, but the vocals just grate against my ears. I’ve tried many times to give this band a chance and I just can’t seem to figure them out.

There’s a high barrier of entry to old Cure albums for me. They’re always mixed so flatly that the instruments kinda sound like MIDI (especially the drums). Robert Smith sounds like he’s singing into one of the drum mics from across the room, and two chords over and over on the guitar gets kinda stale after a couple minutes, even when they turn the chorus pedal all the way up. I guess I’d throw this on if I wanted to feel like I was in a Halloween store or something. Maybe I’ll warm up to it later in life.

I found it hard to hear Mr. Smith in this album. The intro was really nice and had my excited for a sick album that never came. The forest was a good one tho

I know Keiko and Victoria love them, but the Cure are just too slow for me. Was an eh album. Liked the ambient backgrounds though

I don't like the singer's voice, and while I was surprised to find out the album was released a good 5-10 years ahead of my estimate, I still don't see it as more than an ok sounding but kinda darker disco album

That's how long this album should have been.

A Forest is one of my favorite Cure songs. Not really into the rest of the record.

This album feels mostly instrumental even though only 2 songs are without lyrics. I think it sounds unfinished, it is enjoyable moment to moment but doesn't feel like a finished album.

it was lame

Was just as I remembered from the 80's. Still didn't move me much. This album was heavy on the instruments and very few lyrics. Early in their evolution as a band, this album didn't move the needle for me.

I like but don't necessarily love The Cure, and it sounds like they were still searching for their sound on this early effort. Most of the time, I found myself wondering what Robert Smith will look like when he's 70 years old. Does he still go with that Edward Scissorhands goth look? At this writing, dude is close to 65 years of age and apparently still going with that ensemble. Christ, even members of Kiss make appearances without their makeup occasionally. Who's Robert Smith trying to fool at this point? And why does it seem like there as many Cure albums on this list as there are say Bowie and Dylan albums? That's not true, there are "only" something like 3 Cure albums on this list, which seems high. I think "one" is the appropriate number of Cure albums to put on a list like this.

The Cure is not for me. There was very little about Seventeen Seconds that appealed to me. Even the most popular track, A Forest, barely raised an eyebrow. Next.

IJle eightiesklanken echoën af en aan. Eén oor in, ander oor uit. Allemaal amper overtuigend, eerder eentonig, en ik overwoog of ik er één erkenningsster of eventueel één extra erbij uitreikte. Uiteindelijk één extra, en alweer een album afgehandeld.

I like it when The Cure sings. They really didn't on this. It was like an entire album of B side experimental music.

I'm a fan of The Cure but I found this album pretty underwhelming, especially compared to the albums Robert Smith said inspired it. It feels very one note to me, like Joy Division without the punch, just kind of dark and droning for the most part. There are some exceptions, 'A Forest' is a pretty great track. Standout Tracks: Play for Today, A Forest
