Maggot Brain

This gives me vibes of a more funky Hendrix. The guitar work is fantastic! Would get a higher rating but I find “War of Armageddon” almost unlistenable. My favorite tracks are “Hit It and Quit It” and “Super Stupid”.

Gut aber funk

Now we're talking! MOTHER EARTH IS PREGNANT FOR THE THIRD TIME AND YALL DONE KNOCKED HER UP! I call this Progressive Funk and it kicks ass. This is a 9/10 album and it is so close to a full 10. Maggot Brain (the song) is a masterpiece that never gets old and the next few songs are super radio friendly. I love the bass singer in "can you get to that" - he just makes it. Where the album falls flat is back in our minds (short, forgettable filler) and Wars of Armageddon. I love wierd shit, but this song is just grating. Fart sounds, yelling, cuckoo clocks... would it have been so hard to reprise maggot brain as a closer? That would have kept it classy. So close to greatness - I end this album at Super Stupid. The bonus tracks are great, though i don't count them in this review.

When I think of Funkadelic, I guess I'm thinking of Parliament. The first 2 songs aren't all that funky. It was all right. Didn't have any songs that grabbed me. I learned that the same musicians released funky albums as Parliament, and rock-y albums at Funkadelic. This was all right -- I give it a 3.

This is great music to just groove to. Loved discovering that Sleigh Bells "Rill Rill" samples "Can you get to that" on this album.

starts off strong - some of it is really out there (War of Armageddeon) or what sounds like filler (Whole lot of BS) and then an amazing soul song (I miss my baby)... i do like it though - great stuff. Bootsy is so cool.

All the songs sound very good but one or two of them are a bit odd but can still be good songs.

Ok as background music, nothing mindblowing.

The guitarist is so clearly inspired by Hendrix, Super Stupid is essentially him doing an impression of Jimi. Not as accomplished as Jimi on the guitar, but who is? I really liked this album. It was way more interesting and varied than I'd anticipated, so much so I feel I need a second listen to get my head around it properly. The self indulgent moments go both ways for me (guess that'll be the drugs). Sometimes it meanders into weirdness eg Wars of Armageddon, but some of the improv is great eg title track. No doubt these guys are legendary and influential and have been sampled by almost everyone in hip hop. But it's also a sick album. 9/10

Loved it. Thought the long jams were fun to get lost in and the shorter tunes equally great! Officially converted to not being happy with the rating system as it's way to restrictive. Another album I wish I could give 4.5 to...but I can't. Seeing as I went up last time, I'll do the same here.

interesting flatulence on final track. found the rest of the album interesting. It wouldn't have taken much for Funkadelic to branch out into funky black sabbath territory- that would have been a 5 star album!

Slow start, some really nice tunes in the middle section

This was a surprise! bloody loved it- sounds like it was recorded yesterday rather than 50 years ago! Guess I haven't heard it before as Bjorno said they self destructed not long after putting this out. Seems to have influenced so much of the music I love. Prince, Primal Scream and Alabama 3 have borrowed a fair bit of this. A great record in in own right and will be getting plenty of future listens from me. 4/5

forgettable funk album. no offensive but won't listen again

This album is bonkers. Starts and finishes with 10 minute jams, which make up two thirds of the album time. I didn't really care for these. The 15 mins of the the middle 5 tracks is much better, particularly 'You and your folks, me and my folks' which is very Black Sabbath-esque. Just when you think it can't get weirder, the last track has cuckoo clocks, mooing cows, monkey noises & hissing cats. Overall, maybe too weird to return to, but definitely not boring!

Maggot brain was by far the best track. Wouldn’t rush to listen to the whole album again, lots of cow bells in the tracks.

Funky soul, black feels

Crazy guitar solo followed by some funky classics. Some songs don't quite stick the landing, but otherwise it's great. 9

Memorables los 10 minutos de guitarra de la primera canción, Maggot Brain, me recuerdan a Pink Floyd en sus primera epoca, con Sid Barret. Deslumbrante puesta en escena de Can you get To that.

Track 2- sample for Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells was a surprise, probably my favourite track also. Bit of a scattered album with more jam than a kid’s lunchbox. I think I’ve been put off long guitar solos at live gigs- Impressive, but don’t add much and can stall the vibe.

Amazed that this is from 1971. Childish Gambino was clearly inspired by this album for ‘Awaken, My Love’ a few years ago. Gonna play this loud in my car quite often in future. Really loved the solo on the title track, the vocals in general, and the Hendrix-inspired guitar on ‘Super Stupid’. And the energy rules.

This was a fun album. The cow and bell sounds were a nice little add on. I do enjoy the funk sound and enjoy the pace of an album like that...after the title track of course which wasn’t a super start to the album.

This is a masterclass in every possible aspect. Individual songs take masters of their craft and push them to their best. You and your folks, me and my folks features a stunning bass, and wars of armageddon’s drum leaves you gasping for breath. It feels modern and up to date even now. Benchmark for a perfect album. Discounting additional bonus tracks as just that, bonuses (read: still very good tracks).

Yo! this was a great fucking album! I've never heard of this band, but while this is a late review, thoroughly enjoyed this album! I mean, man, just the first track alone, though long, was fucking insanely amazing with it's guitar, that it set a high bar, but the album delivered. I snap bought this album, and will suggest this to anyone that needs something to listen to.

Opening and closing tracks are A+, feels like some force of nature. The album as a whole is eclectic and groovy, rockin' and thoughtful. Was a great listen and makes me want to hear a little more from Funkadelic, but not earth-shattering as a whole. "Maggot Brain" and "Wars of Armageddon" tracks are almost 5/5 tracks. True Feelings: 3.7/5

Sabbath followed by this album is by far the best back-to-back yet. Another absolute classic. "Maggot Brain" is probably my favorite guitar solo of all time. So damn good.

Prog rock jams with funk

A couple of good funky jam bad songs

I literally listen to this album at least once a week

When it comes to the two-sided coin that is Parliament-Funkadelic, it appears that my preference falls heavily on the Parliament side. This was a 7 track rock album (don't let the band name fool you) clocking in at around 37 minutes of runtime. The album is bookended by two 10-minute songs, the first being one long guitar solo with minimal instrumental backing, and the last being mostly an instrumental, frenetic jam filled with tons of off-putting sound effects, including cows mooing and loud, juicy farts. Seriously. That leaves 5 tracks spanning a mere 17 minutes as the meat of the album. One of those songs has a strange metallic instrument warbling the entire song, which kind of ruins it. The remaining 4 songs were good and groovy, but this is easily the most bipolar album I've listened to so far. How do you rate an album made of only 1 star and 4 star songs? My personal enjoyment: 3/5 Did it belong on this list: 5/5

coming to this organically via a playlist with maggot brain. an excellent guitar track, listening in stereo is an absolute must. the echoing effect of the guitar is spectacular. there is a lot to like about this album as a whole but it is let down by the final song - wars of armageddon, all the random noises actually makes it almost unlistenable. favourite track: maggot brain

Not a fan of funk but was pleasantly surprised by songs 1 and 2

Första intryck: bara skumt. Lyssnat 5 min på första låten (av 10). Typ Jimmy Hendrix på mkt knark. Gillar att plonka på gitarren med skumma effekter. Men sen blir det bra mycket bättre! Blir genast mer melodiskt i låt 2. Klassisk 70tals funk, med najs sound och härligt svängiga riff. Inget jag skulle lyssna mycket på pga inte riktigt min stil, men det låter bra! Skumt att Maggot Brain låten är den by far mest lyssnade på? Trodde därför att det var lixom den bästa på albumet.

I remember not liking this for some reason the first time I heard it but I was all about it this time around. Loved the big wailing guitar, especially all over Super Stupid and the title track. Also the weird little triangle-on-acid thing on Back in Our Mind is sick. Definitely better than what I've heard from Parliament so far but still a 4.

Very unique with great performances.

Funkadelic lives up to their name. Up tempo, experimental sounds at times. I appreciate the shorter length. A longer album might wear me out.

Never judge a book by its cover or an album by its title. Not something I would have picked up or even stumbled across if it hadn't been for the wonders of the Internet but a wonderful listen.

Wow! I'm blown away. This album was released a month before I was, and it kicks some serious ass. It's unmistakenly a funk album but it rocks out way more than most rock and metal albums ever did. I knew nothing of this album, had heard none of it, and now I'm a bit in love. Fantastic stuff, and that title track... oh my.

This was pretty cool but I don't see myself listening again anytime soon. I used to listen to One Nation Under a Groove by Funkadelic a fair bit. Should put that one back in my rotation.

Oh, Funkadelic. This is exactly what I wanted to listen to on a Monday morning. This album is absolutely genre-defining. It's almost like George Clinton and his boys were looking at their contemporaries and saying, "Sure you can rock. Sure you got soul. Sure, you're funky? But how far are you willing to go?" And the answer was: not as far as Funkadelic. This albums pushes the boundaries of what was rock/funk/soul/psychadelic music at the time. The opening guitar riff of the album on the title track "Maggot Brain" is a face-melting. 9-minute shred worthy of Hendrix. The guitar tones on this whole album are phenominal. They range from sharply atmosheric to heart-poundinly organic. The tracks are a bit all over the place and thee album lacks cohesion but, even so, manages to work as a whole unit of expression. Much of that is due to George Clinton's peculiar lyrical contribution which, in keeping with the psycadelic/funk ethos, are sparse but pointed most of the time, highlighting culture, race, drug-addled nihilism, and sheer, pleasure-seeking, self-serving abandon.

Banger after banger. I had to deduct from the final score because of the copious fart drops in Wars of Armageddon. Best track: Super Stupid

Ok, this wasn't what I was expecting... the first 10min is literally just a big, bluesy guitar solo. The only "funky" thing about it is the wah. Either way, fuckin cool for early 70s. Rest of the album is complete songs, I wouldn't really say funk so much as rock with a funk edge. Catchy and fun with spooky vibes in the keyboards/samples/FX. Kinda feels like Jimi Hendrix meets Santana with a bit of b-movie silliness thrown in. 4/5, probably in reality a 3 but it gets an extra point for being a fun surprise. This morning the site first recommended Transformer by Lou Reed, but shat itself when I tried to add my savage thoughts on that turd. Then it reloaded to this album.... weird bug. Fuck I hope I don't get that Lou Reed album tomorrow :(
