Favourite Song - You and your folks.m, me and my folks One for karaoke - Maggot Brain (just done some mad interpret dancing) One for a run - Super Stupid Great start to the album and some funky a fuck songs. For some I just wanted even more funk. Why hold back the funk? Just go funk to the wall I saw.
The album has some decent funky music with some very slow going just non vocal music but overall a good funky album and consistent

decent funk, prob didn’t listen enough
This morning when I listened to the album, I was still feeling too sleepy to enjoy its fun but hectic mood. I do love the way everything sounds a bit messy, like the Rolling Stones in the 70's, but the first and the last songs feel too long and self-indulgent for me. I think I prefer all the songs in-between because they put the messiness within the compact structure of a pop song and thus rein it in a bit. My favorite part is the bass in You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks.
I didn't like the title track despite finding it sort of curious. But the energy picks up so much after that. All the parts work very well together in Can You Get To That and Hit It and Quit It and they're melodically catchy as well. This kind of music always sounds like the artists are having fun, which is nice. I also liked how the sonic identity stayed consistent through the album but the mood shifted across songs: for instance, the chill "yeah yeah yeah"s of You and Your Folks leading into the much more aggressive guitar of Super Stupid, which was followed by the Motown vibes of Back in Our Minds. This is not totally my kind of music but it was interesting.

A strange album bookends by 2 10 minute guitar wig out tracks.. The rest of the album contains more regular 3 minute songs that are frequently rocky but still contain some funky grooves.

Pas certain de comprendre l'effet sur le drum pour You And Your Folks. C'est un drôle d'album, avec des éléments de percussions pas toujours pertinent, mais c'est un gros party de musiciens. Pas rien de mémorable, mais une aventure courte pas trop déplaisante.
Mixing is a bit off in many places. Too much reverb etc. Could be a lot better if mixed and mastered right.

I already said this before and I stand for my opinion: the Pink Floyd-ish guitar trip/workout that occupies a quarter of the record, not for me. Indeed for me this album begins with the second song, I Want To Know. Sly And The Family Stone vibes on Hit And Quit It. When Super Stupid came up I thought I was listening again to Jimi Hendrix. With Back In Our Minds we go back to a more funk territory, straying away from rock in a way. Wars Of Armageddon ends the record with a nice wild jam. But farts? Ok! It is a nice funk rock album but I prefer some other Parliament/Funkadelic albums to this one.
Starts brilliantly, but the weirdness of the last couple of tracks got in the way for me.
It's an adventurous album with some cool sounds. Some of the tracks are sublime funk, others are just annoying and drag on and on.

I have a lot of love for Parliament/Funkadelic but have always preferred the funkier side of things There is some great stuff here (the title track in particular) but You and Your Folks... is a bit annoying with its warbling reverb, and the closing track was a bit much

I found it to be closer to Hendrix and Cream than 70s funk. Great voice and guitar work but nothing truly exceptional throughout.
Real mixed feelings about this one. I wanted to like it more than I did, I think. That delay though. Maybe deserves an extra star just for the delay.

I love the first song
The song 'Maggot Brain' is a great piece of guitar, in fact the guitar throughout consistently hits the right places for me. But aside from this almost everything else about the album is a miss for me. I don't mind a mix of long and short songs but then they have no lyrics it makes it hard to engage.

The best of this album IMO: - Maggot Brain - Can You Get To That - Hit It and Quit It I need to listen to this album while high lol. I recognize how it's a classic but I can't rate it more than 3.3/5. Groovy as hell though.
The title track (and first 3rd of the album) is fantastic - not really "funk" at all. Some great guitar riffs and solos. Almost sounds like an atmospheric intro to a Mars Volta track. After that it is "funk" but still not too bad
Really captured me at the start, but found myself losing interest as the album progressed. Production didn't blow me away either

I was definitely expecting something else, the title suggested a Funk/Soul album, but this is definitely a rock album and I can definitely notice the psychedelic aspects of it, similar to Pink Floyd. The opening song is crazy. The guitar riff reminds me in a way to Shine on you crazy diamond and I love it. The long duration is also again similar to Pink Floyd's song. I enjoyed the second and third song as well, and the guitar on all songs is amazing. The fourth and fifth song were okay, but definitely won't be listening on repeat like the rest. Back in our minds was a bit weirder, but still enjoyed. I'm not sure about wars of Armageddon though, a lot more experimental, where I enjoy certain aspects of the song, such as the cool drum patterns and the guitar parts, but not a fan of the baby sounds and all of the alarms, like how does a cow moo or 30 seconds of fart sounds add anything to the song? It's just a big clump of sounds that sound super messy at certain parts in my opinion. Feels like they went a bit too far on this one, but glad to see they at least tried something different. It's cool to have the three extra songs, but again I won't be listening to them on repeat either, except for I miss my baby. In general, loved the first few songs, and the guitar throughout the whole album doesn't fail to impress me. I haven't heard anything else from Funkadelic, but cool to see they have tried something out of the standards.
Yeah, this album is really trippy for 1971... feels like it's made a lot later than it actually is. Also, for some reason, I expected this to be more like the later P-Funk stuff.

Didn’t know this was part of Parliament Funkadelic! Had heard “Can You Get To That” before. Loved the lyric “I had life or rather life had me”. Feels fitting as today is my last day at the Paley Center.

Definitely a lot funk but I was not familiar with any songs. Some of the songs were good. Others not so much.
Impressions of the album altogether, then more positive thoughts on its opener. This is my second time through Maggot Brain. I was primed a couple day ago by a discussion of Sun Ra, but also realized a truth. I tried George Clinton's groups, didn't really stick. The Arkestra, on the other hand, was immediately fascinating. And I have to say it's because Funkadelic, by and large, doesn't swing nearly as much. In addition, there's an obvious difference in tone: "I gotta go to work" vs. space chants. Irony aside. Now, the title track is great. Fades out a bit early for my taste, but there's a great sense of physicality to it I missed the first time around. It's very tape-y: You can hear the medium at times, but also imagine yourself pulling the nearly new artifact from a forgotten box in the attic.
I liked some of it. The song with a bunch of fart sounds was an interesting artistic choice. Really experimental album. Probably would have given it 2.5

I think it was on the list for the first song which was worth the listen. The rest faded into the background.
Intro track is amazing, rest of the album is average to good except Back In Our Minds, which I don’t like at all. Would give 3.5 if that was an option.

When I think of Funkadelic, I guess I'm thinking of Parliament. The first 2 songs aren't all that funky. It was all right. Didn't have any songs that grabbed me. I learned that the same musicians released funky albums as Parliament, and rock-y albums at Funkadelic. This was all right -- I give it a 3.
This is great music to just groove to. Loved discovering that Sleigh Bells "Rill Rill" samples "Can you get to that" on this album.
This was alright, some of the guitar rifts had BBKing vibes. Funkadelic s as Keats reminds me of my ex-wife.

This was a fun album. The cow and bell sounds were a nice little add on. I do enjoy the funk sound and enjoy the pace of an album like that...after the title track of course which wasn’t a super start to the album.

Opening and closing tracks are A+, feels like some force of nature. The album as a whole is eclectic and groovy, rockin' and thoughtful. Was a great listen and makes me want to hear a little more from Funkadelic, but not earth-shattering as a whole. "Maggot Brain" and "Wars of Armageddon" tracks are almost 5/5 tracks. True Feelings: 3.7/5

Wish I could give 3.5 stars. Totally eclectic and weird, but in a good way. Very listenable, merging elements of funk, rock, and psychedelia.

coming to this organically via a playlist with maggot brain. an excellent guitar track, listening in stereo is an absolute must. the echoing effect of the guitar is spectacular. there is a lot to like about this album as a whole but it is let down by the final song - wars of armageddon, all the random noises actually makes it almost unlistenable. favourite track: maggot brain
Good jam album, a whole lot more than just a Sleigh Bells sample. I do feel some of the compositions had more room to grow, but the jams as they are were great and refreshingly experimental
Funkadelic lives up to their name. Up tempo, experimental sounds at times. I appreciate the shorter length. A longer album might wear me out.

This was pretty cool but I don't see myself listening again anytime soon. I used to listen to One Nation Under a Groove by Funkadelic a fair bit. Should put that one back in my rotation.
Really cool album. Lots of 'feel' and emotion that really comes across in the playing. A lot of reviewers seem to focus on the first and last tracks, but I thought the whole thing was great.
Starts off strong with Maggot Brain which is one of my most favourite songs ever. Several good tracks. Not a particular favourite of mine but good to listen to every now and then. Particularly enjoy the afro-psychedelic vibes.
Funky and very much an influence on Prince.

Funk music normally works for me, but this is way too adjacent to psychedelia (the worst genre) to be good.
I've never considered myself to be someone ideologically opposed to funk, but it was only through looking through my funk genre tag ratings on RYM recently that I realised that I've just never vibed to funk - in fact it puts me in a funk. Maggot Brain is a monolith - a super tight, highly detailed, hyped up funky experience which for some reason I am entirely unable to emotionally penetrate in any way. I can hear that the musicianship is highly skilled and I can hear that its more formidable than other funk albums I've listened to. It makes me realise that if I don't like this than I'm probably doomed on the funk front for life!
During the first song I was debating whether the title Maggot Brian was a descriptor of how the music made you feel or if it was suggesting having a maggot eat your brain was the only way to enjoy it. After that the songs go marginally better but the damage was already done. This album is a big nope.

Very peculiar album that I was expecting to enjoy more than I did. The first rather dreary song didn't really bear much resemblance to the rest of the album. The other songs were okay without doing much to stand out apart from the slightly odd last one.
Had this previously when I was doing this individually. Not listening again.

Honestly quite disappointed by this one. It seems popular on online music spaces (which I know can often mean I won’t actually like it because they often choose snobbery over fun anyway) and when I’ve lurked on people’s profiles here I’ve seen it get five stars often. But this did nothing for me, and I felt it would be like that since I heard the opening track. I was just bored for most of it.
not really my style but i can appreciate what it offers. i do like some of the lyrics. a bit ahead of their time being in the early 70s. having 2/7 songs be nearly 10 minute instrumentals is a choice. having a song warning about drug abuse on... the album you wrote while on an acid trip is also a choice.
When I saw funk, this isn't exactly what I was thinking I was going to get. I'm not really sure what I think about this one. I'm not sure this is music that is meant to be listened to statically. It feels like music that is more meant to be experienced, and sitting at my desk trying to get into it just isn't doing it...

I know this album is very popular/highly regarded, but it was a grind to get through. I thought my headphones weren't working on Maggot Brain. If I genuinely don't let popular perception influence me, I'm giving it a 2.
For a Funkadelic album, this didn’t seem all that funky. I only really enjoyed Wars of Armageddon, and even then - only for 30 seconds or so before it went back to being just like the rest of the album.

Also hope you like the key of E (6 of 7 tracks).
#3 This was the second time I have given this album a try, giving it two listens this time around. For all of the rave reviews and praise it gets, I still feel like I am missing something here. Yes, the title track is awesome, but I feel like it sets a level and style that the rest of the album fails to reach again, save for maybe Super Stupid. I guess I had hopes that the album would have leaned into the psychedelic guitar a bit more. But, I can see how in its time this was a mind-blowing genre-bender that sounded like nothing else out there. I don't know how likely I am to deliberately seek this one out again.

Außerdem warum gibt es ein Streit ob Pussy mehr Power haben soll oder die Power mehr Pussy?! Das ist soooo goofy. Es ist auch nicht mein Stil weil es permanent einfach chaotisch klang. Sorry, aber besser als 1-2/5 wirds nicht werden. Es ist so auf 1.5 deshalb, weil ich so nett bin, runde ich noch auf 2 auf

So good elements but not my jam
What a Wierd album. The opening song was miserable. The second was great the third was just thinly veiled sex. The fourth was good. Just all over the place. I will say at least the songs were different and I could tell when a song was over. Which I was thankful for because it meant I was closer to finishing this album.
Didn't find it particularly inspiring and wars of Armageddon might be one of the worst songs I've heard, akin to one of my year 7 music lessons.

Ja ok dette var greit veldig greit funky 70talls rock første og siste sang var veldig lange de føltes litt tomme tho jeg likte gitaren i de begge men litt lite innhold for en sånn lengde så var selve midtdelen av albumet grusomt kort typ 6 sanger som varte tilsammen sånn 17 minutter idk var ikke noe spesiellt to write home about men helt greit 3/5
That intro/title track went on for 10:20 too long. That solo felt like mansplaining a blues scale for 10mins. BORING. Average album overall and didn’t move me in anyway.

Interesting album for sure but not my vibe
I really, really wanted to like this, but it felt so bloated and self-indulgent. I wanted to sing along to some killer tunes whilst dancing my nuts off, but I can't imagine dancing to this, and there were no songs with catchy hooks. I really wanted to like this album, but it went nowhere and did nothing for me whatsoever until the last song, which was completely bonkers and saved the whole thing from being a single star letdown.
77/1001 First listen. I feel like maybe I should like this more. It’s enjoyable enough but don’t know that I would seek this out again. I could cut and paste my reviews at this point for some of these albums. Nice to hear the source of the sample used on Rill Rill by Sleigh bells. They make a meal out of Can you get to that. 4/10

Really not my thing. Some fun sounds but the opening track is weird and maybe it's just my mood today but I was very much not up for weird. The rest of the album was better, just not for me.

Solid funk mixed with anti-war notes. Mostly drawn out groovin' with a lot of filler, not light hearted. Do things with intensity both fight and love. Musically 2.5 of 5 stars. 1st time listen, wouldn't seek album out again but might listen to a song or two.

Can't deny the musicianship on display here but didn't do much for me. Definitely prefer when there are some vocals to go along with the music though. Found the instrumentals a bit of a slog.
I liked this and I like the vibe of the album, haven’t listened to psychedelia genre much but I enjoyed it. Considered adding 1-2 songs to my playlists

2.4/5 Hard to rate with everything going on. What I like is that this group at least tried to blend many things together, so (+) for creativity. On the other hand, the lyrics are point- & soulless, and that's really weird for music that implements elements of Blues and Soul. The guitar solos/parts are cool, but any half-decent session musician can do that, so nothing special here either. Moreover, it doesn't speak for an album if I had to skip through most of the songs since nothing hits really well. The ones that do fuck it up lyrically. I can see why this album is on this list, but so is Elvis Costello. Given that at the time this couldn't even be considered groundbreaking any more with so many other good musicians around, I think that this album is veeery niche and can thus be appreciated by some. For me, only the first song would land in my fav playlist since it doesn't get ruined by other things going on. Also... Wtf is going on with those ratings? Did all the maggots in this world come together to put one big pile of shit on here, consisting of 5 star-ratings? Seriously guys, get your musical taste bearings figured out before you rate something... *Sigh*... This world is lost anyway, why do I even care any more?...
Reminds me a lot of the Seatbelts! Great adlips, sound bites, and intro. Very funky indeed!
I liked the first half of this album but the last two tracks were tough to listen to.
I cannot believe but I knew one song from the album: Can You Get To That! Despite that fact, I wouldn’t say it was my fave music style to vibe with.
Not sure about funk and this didn’t change my mind.
I really loved some moments, but there were too many times that this was straight cacophony. The grating cowbell was awful.

Again, one of the classics when it comes to the time & genre; however, the psychedelic funk mixed with the bizarre, psychedelic instrumental grooves for the album opener & closer weren’t really doing it for me.

2.0 OK somewhat apologetic for the 2.0 - I'm not a funk guy. Maggot Brain (song, not album) is phenomenal guitar work by Eddie Hazel. During this period, I don't think anyone was using the wah peddle more influentially except possibly Hendrix. HOWEVER - not enough to save this album from George Clinton and the heavy LSD influences. I didn't live through the early 70's but the rest of this album ESPECIALLY Wars of Armageddon is a bad acid trip which I did NOT need to listen to before I died. Still 100% agree this is probably one of the most influential albums of all time (especially for guitarists not just funk guitarists but everyone. There is no doubt a lot of what Prince and others did in the 80's in pop trace to this song.)

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.... I just don't get this one. Especially the 10 minute tracks at the start and end. I guess technically it's clever? Well made? I just simply didn't enjoy it.

The first track was not at all what I expected from a band with such a naff name. I was pleasantly surprised with some really good blues guitar. From there Im afraid it, track by track, descended into just as I expected from a band with such a naff name. A couple of tracks were ok but over all a disappointment after a really really good opening track

It's fun if not necessarily something I need to listen to again. Someone please explain why Wars of Armageddon needed the fart sounds? Unpleasant end to the album. Maggot Brain is super sick and I like the vibes but I don't know that I'd need to listen to it again. 2/5 stars.

Guitar in the first 2 minutes of the album is amazing. If this continues across the album I will be rather happy. Ooh those first lyrics were oddly timed and spoken. Odd vibe switch on next few songs. Super Stupid is good. Not a fan of the beat on Back in our minds Hit it and Quit it has odd background vocals. yo what the fuck is the end of wars of armageddon Couldn't get through second listen. Back In Our Minds has such a horrible beat.
They took good music and made it bad. I did vibe to one or two in the middle. Definitely funky. Repetitive however even in the good songs.

Eleven minutes of "I got given a Wah-Wah pedal for Christmas" in, and I'm worried I may be listening to the wrong album. Where's the beat? Where's the groove? Acoustic intro for track two, this cant' be righ-- ah, there it is, it is a bit funky after all. The problem is, it's not perticularly soulful funk, it's a more rock-orientated affair, which is probably how and why Funkadelic became so popular in the first place - they found a niche which nobody else was really catering for. Fair play to them, but this - for my tastes - is all a bit sprawling and unfocused - when it does get into a groove, it hits the spot, but these moments are far and few between. What's Going On was released the same year as this, and that moves me in a way this album simply does not. I know Funkadelic recorded better stuff that this, as an album often celebrated as a landmark recording, I've always been somewhat underwhelmed by Maggot Brain.

The first track would be fascinating listen while on something, but I'm not on something, so my listening experience was really not all that. I thought it had some interesting uses of echoes, and repeating guitar licks that change slightly each time they're replayed. The other tracks were great! My favorite was Can You Get To That, with You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks being another honorable mention. Not a fan of how 10 minutes of time was spent on the opener and closer (2/3 of the album). Really wasn't all that, but the few songs between were great!
Hard to listen to. Some good riffs in there, but at least as repetitive as any funk album and the extraneous sounds and sound effects make for a tough listen. Literally ends with a fart.

I wanted to like this, but the singer is truly obnoxious. There are vocalists out there who could have made this work, and I liked the eclectic feel to the music, but this ain't working as-is.

This was a bit of a mix. Bits I thought were completely pointless and uninteresting (sorry all you 10-minute meandering guitar solo fans out there). Bits I really liked (Can You Get To That, Super Stupid*). Bits were, and I cannot stress this enough, really fucking weird. I listened to this while trying to tame the tomato plants taking over the garden and I was balanced on the edge of the raised borders trying to construct a branch and string contraption when the wet fart noises started and I was so surprised I nearly wobbled into the courgette plants. Wikipedia highlight: "Guitarist Tawl Ross reportedly had a traumatic drug experience after getting into an "acid eating contest, then snorting some raw speed, before completely flipping out", and did not perform with the group again". That is absolutely what parts of this album feel like. I want 2.5 but 2/5 will have to do. * After finding out Audioslave covered Super Stupid, I had a listen after this and it's fantastic.
This album felt like a fever dream, I have no idea why it's on this list as I could have definetly gone my life without listening to it
Funk!
What the fuck
Okay I was expecting more... funk lol and the whole album to be a lot harder considering it's called Maggot Brain. It's good still, just not the intensity I was expecting going in. I love the variety of sounds in this, the tings and warbles and cuckoo clocks. It's so fun. I will say, I can tell that this is sonically very good, and it's extremely interesting. I'm just not loving it as much as I thought I would. Especially because I'm such a huge fan of funk in general. Lots of jarring add on sounds like women screaming and cats yowling. It's definitely theatrical but it's taking me out of the music so I'm not loving it. I don't know, it feels more like an assignment than music I'd want to listen to. Just not my speed unfortunately.
It's hard to describe, in unique ways, my first impressions when I see and album cover like this. I know - I need an open mind... That's why I'm listening to 1001 different albums I guess. But it's hard boss, hard not to feel a little more dead inside. OK now the first track is 10 minutes and the whole album is just 37 - here goes.... the first half of the self titled track is a Kirk Hammett style solo, a tip toe through the tulips and more wah... the one with the most listens, Can You Get to That is decent. Its got a nice groove, Hazel (the guitarist) is very talented (despite the Kirk Comment) as is obviously George Clinton. It was fine - probably wouldn't seek it out again in a hurry. Gem was Super Stupid - purely for the intro and Hazel.
Eddie Hazel should probably be more celebrated. And I only say probably because I don’t do it enough. Effortless tone, pierces through the mix without being awkward, just gets it all right. There’s a bit too much Hendrix worship going on, but I mean, sure. My main gripe with Funkadelic is they sound like a terrific time live, but it isn’t until Parliament that there are a lot of memorable tunes (maybe more memorable for the samples, tough to say).
very interesting album. i didn’t expect the experimentalness at the last leg of the album. the first song was amazing. i liked it a lot though the flatulence did surprise me. it did fit though.
