Everybody is rightfully enamored over the guitar solo on the title track (the best ever post Hendrix), but it must be mentioned how Eddie Hazel absolutely rips it again on Hit It and Quit It and then again on Super Stupid. Just an incredibly talented group of musicians, amazing production and a timeless sound all packaged together perfectly by Dr. Fukenstein, the only physician who could pull off such a creation. More power to the pussy! More pussy to the people!

Fun fact: I've seen George Clinton shows more times than I've actually listened to anything he recorded. Another one of those things I just never got around to but also something that was harder to do in the times before streaming. You'd read a lot about Funkadelic and Parliament but actually getting to hear it was another thing. Missed opportunity as this is really good.

Discovered this album a few years ago based on an internet stranger's recommendation. It's admittedly the only Funkadelic album I've ever heard, so I have little context. The Hendrix-style solos, hypnotic beats, drug-fueled lyrics, and rythmic mantra-like verses all together give you this fun musical trip. Highly recommend listening to this with headphones or in front of a 2.0 setup (the left-right panning adds a another layer to the listening experience).

Honestly, never listened to this and was not familiar with Funkadelic. That said, I was impressed with this album and Eddie Hazel. Hazel's guitar work, especially on "Maggot Brain" and "Super Stupid" was very good.

Didnt expect this album to be this fun after the opening track A little bit all over the place in the middle and wars of armaggedon is a little bit too playful and experimental for my taste if we are talking serious analysis It is, as already said, so funky and fun you can accept it and just vibe with it. Not a lot of cohesion and order. What a guitar in the title track, legendary stuff.

This morning when I listened to the album, I was still feeling too sleepy to enjoy its fun but hectic mood. I do love the way everything sounds a bit messy, like the Rolling Stones in the 70's, but the first and the last songs feel too long and self-indulgent for me. I think I prefer all the songs in-between because they put the messiness within the compact structure of a pop song and thus rein it in a bit. My favorite part is the bass in You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks.
I didn't like the title track despite finding it sort of curious. But the energy picks up so much after that. All the parts work very well together in Can You Get To That and Hit It and Quit It and they're melodically catchy as well. This kind of music always sounds like the artists are having fun, which is nice. I also liked how the sonic identity stayed consistent through the album but the mood shifted across songs: for instance, the chill "yeah yeah yeah"s of You and Your Folks leading into the much more aggressive guitar of Super Stupid, which was followed by the Motown vibes of Back in Our Minds. This is not totally my kind of music but it was interesting.
Perfect for those of us who enjoy hallucinogenic journeys and pussy.
Listened to this on the RS500. This was my second listen of the record. It is awesome.

Maggot Brain was left on repeat for days at a time in my dorm room, but hadn't heard the other tracks in a while. Some of it crosses the line for me in terms of good taste, but hard to argue with it overall.

This album is... many things... musically brilliant, adventurous, groovy, trippy, heart rending, occasionally profound, gleefully weird, and a blast to listen to. There isn't another album like it. Tonally, the album is kind of all over the place, but who cares? The songs are entertaining and riveting to listen to, front to back. The title song is obviously the showpiece of the entire album, worth the price of admission and 5 stars all on its own. It's a darkly beautiful odyssey, an absolute masterpiece. On the flip side, I have a soft spot for the the wackadoo weirdness of "Back in Our Minds" and "Wars of Armageddon," which are both musically clever and just plain fun. "Super Stupid" rocks surprisingly hard, putting a lot of rock bands to shame. That all these songs live together on one album and it somehow works is a marvel. J'aime beaucoup la pochette de cet album. Super Stupid a toute une drive. Le groove de drum au début de Wars Of Armageddon est très cool. Pas certain de comprendre l'effet sur le drum pour You And Your Folks. C'est un drôle d'album, avec des éléments de percussions pas toujours pertinent, mais c'est un gros party de musiciens. Pas rien de mémorable, mais une aventure courte pas trop déplaisante.

Mixing is a bit off in many places. Too much reverb etc. Could be a lot better if mixed and mastered right.
This is the third album by funk rock band Funkadelic. As the band name suggests, this album is mostly psychedelic funk music, but it also has some R&B and rock elements sprinkled in. The most popular track is the first one - title song "Maggot Brain" - which is a 10 minute long trippy and eerie journey into the stratosphere of your imagination. You may feel all types of emotions while listening to the psychedelic first song, but the next 5 songs will have you bumping to the funky tunes. The album then culminates with a wild 9 and a half minute track of the whole band jamming out with a lot of psychedelic sound effects added in. The album keeps you interested for the entire ride, which to me indicates a great album. It's a monument of psychedelic funk and a defining moment of Black rock from the 70's. It's crazy to me that I've never before heard of this album, the band, or these songs, because it was all a good jam. Better late than never I suppose. Everyone should give this insane album a listen!

I already said this before and I stand for my opinion: the Pink Floyd-ish guitar trip/workout that occupies a quarter of the record, not for me. Indeed for me this album begins with the second song, I Want To Know. Sly And The Family Stone vibes on Hit And Quit It. When Super Stupid came up I thought I was listening again to Jimi Hendrix. With Back In Our Minds we go back to a more funk territory, straying away from rock in a way. Wars Of Armageddon ends the record with a nice wild jam. But farts? Ok! It is a nice funk rock album but I prefer some other Parliament/Funkadelic albums to this one.
Starts brilliantly, but the weirdness of the last couple of tracks got in the way for me.
It's an adventurous album with some cool sounds. Some of the tracks are sublime funk, others are just annoying and drag on and on.

Mind blown! First time listening. I'm not sure how the opening track got me, it almost became transcendent. The rest of the tracks flowed rockingly, until that oddly annoying metallic pronging noise throughout the penultimate track. I was close to giving it a 5, but the metallic annoyance down-starred it. An otherwise sublime album!

I found it to be closer to Hendrix and Cream than 70s funk. Great voice and guitar work but nothing truly exceptional throughout.
Wanted to give this a fair chance but just couldn't. Already not a favourite genre of mine but it felt also that half the album was just kinda a waste of time. The first track was an okay instrumental that lacked any real highlights or any that warranted it being 10 minutes long. Then followed a few rather short songs, one as unspectacular and forgettable as the other before we arrived at the closing track, Wars of Armageddon. This one should have been called Noise of Armageddon and is really a 10 minute shittake. And I don't mean the Asian mushroom! The kind of noise and sounds that are in there make you go wtf is this.and even after sitting through all of it, I still wonder what exactly the point or purpose of this was. This one did feel like a waste of 36 minutes and left me with no choice but to hand out another 2 stars

Fun and interesting.
Why I don't have a copy of this on vinyl is a mystery. I compare this album to a short acid trip, you definitely get taken on a journey and it is a delightful, sprawling cacophony of funk and psychedelia. Maggot Brain is another of those albums that I had never heard completely until relatively recently. It was always played at friends houses, winding down after a long night out or tracks from it made it onto mix tapes and compilations. Essential listening if only for that fact that it is pretty genre defying and doesn't easily fit into a neat category. It feels way longer than it's 36 minutes because George Clinton, Eddie Hazel and the gang fit so much music in there. I got to the end, surprised only a short amount of time had passed so I gave it a few more listens just to be sure I hadn't floated into another dimension.

Had Super Stupid on a couple of my playlists but not heard the full album before now. Sounds great for 1971 and holds up today. Definitely a rock album with funk influences rather than a full on blend.

I love the first song
This'd be a five star album for the title track alone, but the rest of the album slaps for sure. "Can You Get To That" is so strong Sleigh Bells can slap a vocal track over the top of a sample from it and produce a banger. "Hit It and Quit It" is just funk brilliance. And "Wars of Armageddon" is a brain melter of a closing track. I can definitely see that the album as a whole might be too weird for some people, but I've long thought the title track is a veritable Voight-Kampff test. If you can listen to the track "Maggot Brain" and not get the feels, then someone in a trench coat needs to come retire you. And I felt like that before finding out the backstory to the track, which only heightens its emotional impact! Fave track - "Maggot Brain", for sure, but "Hit It and Quit It" gets an honourable earwormy mention!

Loved this. Not listened to it all the way through before but knew a few of the tunes. Found it hard going at first but it takes you on a real journey. A proper album that needs to be experienced from start to finish to make sense.
The song 'Maggot Brain' is a great piece of guitar, in fact the guitar throughout consistently hits the right places for me. But aside from this almost everything else about the album is a miss for me. I don't mind a mix of long and short songs but then they have no lyrics it makes it hard to engage.

Awesome, and really surprised me how awesome. Hints of influence on or by an eclectic range of artists, including Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Radiohead, Lenny Kravitz, Slash, Avalanches, Royal Blood, Jamie T, and many more. I absolutely loved it, with my favourites being ... actually, all 7 tracks on the original album! An extra star for being so unexpectedly wonderful makes it my first 6 🌟 album!
Great stuff, there's a stark difference between the first track and the rest of the album but I don't mind it, I think it still sounds cohesive. Both parts are so good, the sparse guitary first track, and the funky second half. Almost a five, but I wasn't feeling the last couple of tracks as much

Maggot Brain is gorgeously sludgy, even if it is a glorified guitar solo, it has enough weirdness going on that it doesn't offend me. Always loved Can You Get To That. Summer essential that one! Hit It and Quit It is good, but not up to the first two tracks. The rest of the album remains very funky and fun, but never quite hits the sublime heights of the start. Still great though!
Love this album, maybe being harsh but just misses out on a 5 because of the two 10 minute songs dragging on a little.

Really interesting album, wasn’t sure what i was going to hear.
The magic that is the year 1971. I wonder if it's a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point--I just expect 1971 albums to be amazing so I make them so in my mind? Nope. Can't be that. I was slain from the opening track, with that psychedelic, apocalyptic guitar. I've rarely heard anything so soothing and hypnotic. Eddie Hazel, where did you learn to play like that? The rest of the album is pretty great, the other high point being "Super Stupid", but nothing compares to the epic opening track. It's like it opened a door to another realm. Dude's playing his guitar as if his mother had just died, just as instructed.
Great music for studying
A year after Hendrix's death, this album brims with his influence. A combination of funk, acid rock, experimental music, and psychedelia, Maggot Brain is both accessible and transgressive in a way that only George Clinton can be. The musicianship on this album is unimpeachable.

The title track (and first 3rd of the album) is fantastic - not really "funk" at all. Some great guitar riffs and solos. Almost sounds like an atmospheric intro to a Mars Volta track. After that it is "funk" but still not too bad

Opening track is a bold move. I don't care much for extended guitar solos that don't seem to serve a song, but gotta respect kicking off an album 10 minutes of sad Hendrix. Plus it's not too masterbatory here. Plus plus it serves the album - I think the point might be to work all the dark and heavy stuff out of your maggot brain from the jump so you can be free to enjoy the remaining 25 booty shaking minutes. The group vocal funk stuff is pretty dope - high voice, mid voice, low low booty rumble voice. The riff rock funk stuff is pretty good - still moves the booty. The fart sounds are fart sounds. This album is dripping with vibe. They slap, the bang. There’s funk, there’s hendrix, there’s jamming, theirs weird trancelike whiny guitar. Every song moves me on a particular way which is what a 5 needs to do. I worry the mysterious heroin addict Jesus like guitar player has taken over the story of this album. I get what the Armageddon song is doing with all the sound effects, but it’s a little annoying, just okay the jam, the farts brought be back. Here’s to farts and heroin Jesus. 5.

Actually really good. Reminded me of Awaken My Love from Childish Gambino. Can tell he pulled from this genre and maybe even this album a lot. First instrumental guitar riff song was cool, but even better once you got to the rest of the album.
I have to be honest - funk isn't my thing; I don't know why, it just isn't. That said, Maggot Brain's gritty blues production quality and experimentalism won me over from the start. Listening to it makes me feel the same way that watching Evil Dead 2 makes me feel - just a dirty good time. With Eddie Hazel tearing off lead guitar riffs, it's almost like The Mothers with a message, and I'm actually now wondering if Zappa didn't try to replicate the Funkadelic sound with Napoleon Murphy Brock as Clinton and himself as Hazel. Really great album - a wonderful surprise.
I was definitely expecting something else, the title suggested a Funk/Soul album, but this is definitely a rock album and I can definitely notice the psychedelic aspects of it, similar to Pink Floyd. The opening song is crazy. The guitar riff reminds me in a way to Shine on you crazy diamond and I love it. The long duration is also again similar to Pink Floyd's song. I enjoyed the second and third song as well, and the guitar on all songs is amazing. The fourth and fifth song were okay, but definitely won't be listening on repeat like the rest. Back in our minds was a bit weirder, but still enjoyed. I'm not sure about wars of Armageddon though, a lot more experimental, where I enjoy certain aspects of the song, such as the cool drum patterns and the guitar parts, but not a fan of the baby sounds and all of the alarms, like how does a cow moo or 30 seconds of fart sounds add anything to the song? It's just a big clump of sounds that sound super messy at certain parts in my opinion. Feels like they went a bit too far on this one, but glad to see they at least tried something different. It's cool to have the three extra songs, but again I won't be listening to them on repeat either, except for I miss my baby. In general, loved the first few songs, and the guitar throughout the whole album doesn't fail to impress me. I haven't heard anything else from Funkadelic, but cool to see they have tried something out of the standards.
Yeah, this album is really trippy for 1971... feels like it's made a lot later than it actually is. Also, for some reason, I expected this to be more like the later P-Funk stuff.
Extremely good, very funky. First time I've ever thought random fart noises were funny. Laugh-out loud bits and hypnotic jams. Great start!
An experience
love a bit of maggot brain. its got everything, john squire-esque solos, hendrix like tracks, soul train style soul, sleaze, keyboard led prog style tracks and super low barry white bass singing. this is the funk album that all the others should be compared to.
I'm struggling to see how a band called Funkadelic releases an album called Maggot Brain. That's like a pop punk album name. Anyway, yeah, alright.
What a delightfully mad bastard George Clinton is. I love this album mainly because I don't understand any of it. And it's actually listenable which can't be said of a lot of Parliament/Funkadelic's output.
Liked the instrumentals particularly in the opening half of the album. Very good energy but gets quite hectic towards the end.

Iconic funk album which slays exactly the way it intends to slay. The incredible raw feeling and emotion in the title track alone does it for me, with some nice grooves afterward to come down to.

Great album by a great band. Funky, groovy, and psychedelic. The opener and title track is an incredible piece of music, setting the tone for the rest of the album. Beforehand, I worried that this and maybe one or two other songs would dominate the record, the rest being mediocre fillers, but I have to say all songs were of top quality. If I would have to point out any issue, I'd say they could have left out some of the silliness; better leave that sort of thing to Zappa.
The title track is not very funky and is way too long. Tracks 2-6 are pretty good with Super Stupid being my favorite. Track 7, Wars of Armageddon is wayy too long and is not good. Especially when you get to the fart sounds around 8 minutes in. Bonus tracks are not bad with the exception of the \"Maggot Brain Alternate Mix\", which is somehow worse than the original. I had high hopes for this album, but it definitely wasn't what I was expecting.

Just a super cool album with a bunch of moods. It's a shame it wasn't more well-received at the time. It would have been really interesting to see this album have a larger effect on the direction of music in the 70s

No idea what to expect, but the album title and artist name seemed like a major deterrent. However, this album is just amazing. The title track actually reminds me of a heavy guitar pink floyd jam. The rhythm/groove on the remaining tracks is infectious without being overdone. The vocals fit, but the music is what soars. Wars of Armageddon is the only one i probably don't need to listen to again. Surprising!

On the whole I did enjoy this album, it was so funky! But I did start to get bored towards the end unfortunately. 4/5 stars.

Año 1971. Ni idea de quienes eran pero si me suenan sus componentes. Empieza con 10 minutos de desvaríos alucinógenos. Quitando "Spuer stupid" me ha parecido bastante aburrido. En su momento tuvo que ser impactante oírlo recién salido en ese año, pero creo que ha envejecido mal.
Pretty solid funk album that has the right mix of funk r&b and experimental stuff going on. The first song is a bit slow but after that it’s significantly better. 7.7/10

I listened to this in two sittings. On the first sitting I hated the maggot brain solo, but enjoyed the other stuff. But on the second sitting, I loved the alternate mix of maggot brain. Perhaps I just needed some warm up before the solo 😂

This was not what I was expecting from an album called maggot brain. Fun, weird, funky and soulful! Good stuff.

If this album had nothing but the title track it would be legendary. Speaking of which Funkadrlic would seem to be the most unlikely of sources for one of rocks great guitar epics, but there you have it. And the rest of the album while nothing like the title track is still worthy of many many listens. Easily 5 🌟

Didn’t know this was part of Parliament Funkadelic! Had heard “Can You Get To That” before. Loved the lyric “I had life or rather life had me”. Feels fitting as today is my last day at the Paley Center.
Holy Schneikies, that is some truly mind-melting guitar work!! I had been introduced to the guitar solo on the title track by a brilliant guitar teacher, and it still sends me on a journey every time I hear it. The whole album is a beautiful, jarring, dark journey into the abyss and somehow lets us escape. Barely. What a masterpiece.

Assume this is gonna be funk & soul? Hopefully, could be good. Wow ok not wheat I was expecting. First track is mad electric guitar skillzzzz a la Clapton, second track is a like a mad country-ish soul vibe. Overall is very electric guitar heavy, kinda Hendrix-esque. It's all good, prob a 2.5, never massively been my kinda genre. Maybe 2 cos just not that arsed about it.

Definitely a lot funk but I was not familiar with any songs. Some of the songs were good. Others not so much.
Holy hell this was a great album. Amazing opener with a 9 minute blues/funk guitar solo. Whole album has a strong groove through it, Super Stupid is a highlight. Back in our Minds has some interesting percussion leading it. I think it was up and down, loved some songs, others were just ok. None were bad though. Added a few songs to the playlist, definitely would go back to his album.
Impressions of the album altogether, then more positive thoughts on its opener. This is my second time through Maggot Brain. I was primed a couple day ago by a discussion of Sun Ra, but also realized a truth. I tried George Clinton's groups, didn't really stick. The Arkestra, on the other hand, was immediately fascinating. And I have to say it's because Funkadelic, by and large, doesn't swing nearly as much. In addition, there's an obvious difference in tone: "I gotta go to work" vs. space chants. Irony aside. Now, the title track is great. Fades out a bit early for my taste, but there's a great sense of physicality to it I missed the first time around. It's very tape-y: You can hear the medium at times, but also imagine yourself pulling the nearly new artifact from a forgotten box in the attic.

Weird and wild and funky as hell. The title track has some of the coolest guitar work I’ve ever heard, and really the guitar shines throughout the whole album. Catchy, funny, funky lyrics add layers to the stellar music.
I liked some of it. The song with a bunch of fart sounds was an interesting artistic choice. Really experimental album. Probably would have given it 2.5

3.5, for a band called Funkadelic, I didn't expect the opening song. The first half definitely stands out, but there was a lot to love about the experimental second half barring the closing flatulence
This is my second PFunk album in less than a week and man-oh-man. The title track alone merits its five stars, I mean, who sends a guitarist into a session and tells them to play like their mother just died? Very deep funk album that doesn't show the funky side that they will become, but this is my style.
