A Wizard, A True Star

"There is cause and effect There's a reason I'm so erect"
I listened to Taylor's Version of this. I respect the anger to re-record so people you hate get screwed over.
Glad Kanye plucked these songs out of obscurity
**** THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS **** . . . . . . . . The lead singer of this band is best known for his role in Adam Sandler’s smash 2000 hit “Little Nicky”. He also played the dad on the MTV show “The Osbournes”. Happy to see this band finally get some recognition.
Ed Sheeran INNOCENT of copyright infringement (for now 🤷♂️)
I don’t like Cookie Monster voice.
Good cover, they changed some lyrics though…“Ch-ch-ch-changes, turn and face the strange…time may change me, but I can’t trace time”
I don't understand why this is on the list, but read some articles explaining their influence. I need a movie about this band starring Joaquin Phoenix or Jamie Foxx to revisit my rating.
Always interesting to see which causes are highlighted and which ones are not.
How many English albums are we going to listen to.
✊👊
We are going to listen so many English albums. Is this really 1001 good
Like much of 90s/00s rock, I have no idea what they are singing without looking up the lyrics. Never really listened to Radiohead much during that era unless they were on the radio. My ~nostalgia~ bias. 📻💾💽📼
Dig Frontier Psychiatrist. Overall pretty chill and something I never listened to when it released.
I listened to Taylor's Version of this. I respect the anger to re-record so people you hate get screwed over.
Enjoyed a couple minutes of their Turn on Your Love Light cover. Generally this album I’d be ok with in the background at low volume, but not playing full blast.
This and the Grateful Dead live album back to back is too much.
Not into this at all (or maybe shoegaze generally?). I'd rather listen to the live dead album.
Reminded me of the adele/skrillex dubstep mashup (Posted Jun 12, 2011): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md1QECWVRHs Listening to this mashup again, it isn't as good as I remembered.
Thought I liked a song Costello cameo in a movie or TV show. Went digging and was guessing maybe this from Austin Powers: https://youtu.be/k0z498xEtT4?feature=shared But i mixed him up with Buddy Holly- Everyday. Not sure why lol.
Weird at times, but I ended up liking it overall. Based on the wiki description I thought it was going to be bad.
Not for me.
We finally got them 25 albums in.
Lol this opening song. After reading about this album more…not sure any message it was trying to send works today. Did it even in the 70s?
Didn’t realize I heard a song from these guys before (saved in my Spotify- Mockingbirds)
This is too ~artsy fartsy~ for me. Guess I don't "get" it.
Second day in a row of something too ~artsy fartsy~ for me.
👑 👑 👑 👑 👑 Did Danforth have TVs? Am I misremembering sitting in Danforth and the Alien Ant Farm cover coming on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDl9ZMfj6aE
"There is cause and effect There's a reason I'm so erect"
This was his 18th album...in 1975. Damn.
Classic~
ehhhhhhh okay
I dig it
Think my first encounter with a Blur song was playing FIFA 98. I have no idea what he's saying sometimes. Attempted partial transcription: Woohooo I got my head checked By a chomba che It wasn’t easy The nothingahhh No Woohooo When ifandalpliay Woohooo Andisplayialal
☔☔☔☔☔
Why do these blokes think they aren't European. Bloody daft.
Ace of Spades 👍 (only song I knew). This got tedious after. Didn't bother listening to the 2nd disc in the Expanded Edition.
Okay...but 1001 worthy?
Ended up digging this way more than I thought I would.
😎⭐😊⭐😀
Groovy baby
Home cooking again.
👍👍👍👍👍
No nostalgia for this album.
Memories unlocked by some of these songs.
Singles are a nostalgia trip. Also, was not expecting "Battlestar Scralatchtica" lol. Of the era I guess.
...I'd rather listen to the Beatles if this is the style. Was probably going to give this a 2, but the last song bumps it up.
Not into this. Nice album cover though.
ok i guess
Was not into this album when it released, but digging this now.
The beats are great.
How many random English rock/pop bands can they put in this thing.
Never heard of them before. P chill.
Not for me.
The hits still bang, but overall not as good as I remembered.
~Nostalgia~ for the hits probably making me rank this higher than I should.
Some tracks p chill. Ended on a 👎 track: "21st Century Poem"
Not for me.
~nostalgia again~
Some of the rapping/whisper-y spoken word type stuff I disliked, but the beats 👍. Think the first massive attack song I remember listening to was from Blade 2 (i against i with mos def): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fkUccUFShs&t=1s And also the unofficial NWS music video for [Paradise Circus (zeds dead remix)]
~Nostalgia time warp again~ Don't remember the year, but think I first heard this at summer camp. ✋"But hold on, how can you rate this so highly???" "NOT rEaL PuNk!!! They sold out!!!" ✋ Retconning punk into some coherent ideology (esp. politically) gets insufferable. Let's not get into: (1) the very terrible side of the punk uhhhh..."aesthetic"; or (2) the marketing where people think a manufactured English boy band invented the genre. Two videos to check out below. If TLDW the 2nd video, here's the top comment: ""I once saw Finn respond to a troll with “of course it isn’t punk, nothing is punk. Only you are punk.” And it was one of the best direct hits I’ve ever seen. This fkn scene man"" 🫵😤🫵 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Video on Green Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xBPF-gYXW0 Touches on Green day, but is more on the youtuber's journey with the music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFwN8wQdZ6A
Fellas, is it cool if: 📝You help your friend and his brothers get a music deal. ⚰️Same friend shows up at your funeral in your clothes + your wife on his arm. 💍They get married 3 months after your funeral. 🚸Your friend then also Fs your daughter. 😡Then your friend gets 🔫 by your wife(now friend's wife) when she finds out. Sam Cooke haunted the crap out of Bobby Womack.
Added 3 songs to a playlist from the other album we got (The Suburbs) vs. only 1 on this album...but I end up feeling about the same overall.
Initially thought I never heard of this band, but “And You and I” reminded me of a song from the movie Almost Famous. Yep, they are on there lol. Seeing an 18 min opening song annoyed me. Got sick of the vocals by the end of the album.
Started listening as I drink my morning caffeine fix. Is that a tambourine in the opening song? Do I hate that part? Maybe yes. I vaguely recall some pundits during the Bush or Trump years wishing for "great protest music" as an upside lol. What "great protest music" has America created in the past 8 years or even in the last 20? The Tropicalia movement emerges in response to a pro-democracy removal of Brazil's president...and this band gets involved. Who backed this pro-democracy removal and the following decades of prosperity? You are welcome Brazil.
Pretty sure the first time I listened to Johnny Cash was the "Hurt" cover (2002!!?). Then he passed and the movie came out. Somewhere around then is when I started listening to more of his work.
The “la la la lalalalalala ”in “Masked Marauder” got annoying.
I only know M.I.A.’s singles like Paper Planes.
Was not expecting a Nelly Furtado feature lol.
This sort of spoken word-y thing + highlighting Cave's voice is not for me. Favorite songs are with the features…where I don’t have to listen to him as much.
Almost Famous Movie - Tiny Dancer https://youtu.be/kgcD0XErPZo?feature=shared
Some songs 👍, but this got tedious by the end. I think listening to some albums all in one go/big chunks is messing with my enjoyment of music.
Released in 1979, but I’m classifying it as “80s” ok.
Canadians into the confederacy. Proto-drake?
As cash grab manufactured boy bands go, they got some catchy songs.
Getting jiggy with it I only listened to about 1/3 of each remix.
Listened to this at very low volume at work. Best way to appreciate this artist.
William Shatner's cover of Tambourine Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmCi_-9Shhg
These guys would love dnd.
Reminds me of Bob Dylan.
I want to go back and rank the Sex Pistols higher.
This dragged for me by the end.
This got really rough to listen to later on.
Skits were a bad trend, esp. if they weren't separated into skippable tracks.
Think they were in the right place/right time with a certain fashion style, "CBGB sound", anemoia of certain young boomers/GenXers bummed about missing "real punk", and certain young millennials looking for something "edgier" than Backstreet Boys (but not too edgy). Contrast the sound/look/crowd of this "4 car garage rock" (and the similar bands that followed) vs. nu metal or rap. So are The Strokes poseurs? 1970s CBGB cosplay? I'd say so, but they got some fun songs. Everyone has heard "Last Nite"...right? Also, lol at one of their songs being censored due to 9/11. 🦅🗽
P chill.
Pefectly cromulent 90s
If artists like KISS/GWAR/etc. got on stage without the cosplay and pageantry...would their fans be pissed? Do celebrities that got famous with an eXtReMe costume/spectacle get annoyed maintaining it decades later? Marilyn Manson must not care. Pigeonholed himself early, so even if he wanted to move on, the pop/country/rap conversion was unlikely. Maybe if he found religion? I do vaguely remember his appearance in Sons of Anarchy though lol. Anyway, ~nostalgia~ hitting me as listening to this reminded me of The Matrix soundtracks + MM's other singles from that era.
Not even the Nick Cave feature can bring this album down.
90s
Repeating myself again, I want to go back and rate the Sex Pistols higher.
Website linked to the 3 disc "Remastered 2013 Super Deluxe Edition" of this. Disc 1 - Listened Disc 2 - Not available to me Disc 3 - I skipped this lol
Not into this at all.
IIRC I had really high expectations post-Fugees The Score and bought this album at the time. Was a bit of a let down for me. Listening to it now, I feel the same way.
Another English boy band that stole songs. They do have some bangers though.
Now I know where Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise comes from.
Maybe I don’t get Bob Dylan.
Knew the singles, but didn't realize she was white + English until this. Some of these lyrics are hilarious with that context. A blue eyed soul trailblazer for fellow lasses Amy Winehouse and Adele.
Kinda spooky.
"Tainted Love" and "Where Did our Love Go" covers are fun. Didn’t realize “Tainted Love” was a cover until looking into this album. The rest ehh.
Liked this more than I thought I would.
Listened to all 6 discs(not in one sitting) and I still dig it. Not sure how many other albums/musicians where I could do the same thing without getting sick of it.
