Can't Buy A Thrill by Steely Dan
Nov 29 2025

Can't believe I'd never listened to this as an album before. Three big FM radio staples that are still not tiresome despite having been fed them via various media for literally my entire life (this record was in production and came out pretty much simultaneously with me, in August 1972, albeit with a lot more planning)... and the less familiar tracks are also highly enjoyable. Also can't believe I didn't realize "Dirty Work" was a Dan tune until I saw the movie "American Hustle" (which features it perfectly) and happened to stay and read the credits. Great album, looking forward to checking out the other SD albums I'm not so familiar with. I've played the vinyl of "Pretzel Logic" and "Aja" many times, and found "FM" to be a most agreeable jukebox record, but the second and third albums are on my list of things to explore... maybe today while painting my kitchen in the Ono style. It must be said, though... the cover art for this one is pretty hideous. Did I ignore it for decades because it looked like a low-budget cash grab by a borderline-bootleg label, and not a genuine masterpiece of popular music? This is one book that ought not be judged by its cover.

Rapture by Anita Baker
Nov 30 2025

Smooth, effective. A little too much scat singing for my taste.

Treasure by Cocteau Twins

Ethereal as all get out

Harvest by Neil Young
Dec 02 2025

Pretty solid Neil, perhaps lacking the intensity provided by Crazy Horse, but still highly re-listensble. I'm reminded of a friend who used to play this record at her canasta nights, but would always get up to lift the needle and skip "A Man Needs a Maid." I guess she hated that song. Was it just the title that irked her? I've never paid much attention to the other lyrics... but it sounds good musically.

Music by Madonna
Dec 03 2025

This is pretty groovy. I really only knew the title track (inescapable hit single)... it all hangs together quite nicely.

Dec 05 2025

Never heard of this before. Honestly didn't listen close... I'm painting my kitchen and just need background noise... but it sounded good.

Always weird to see the yellow cover as opposed to the US one which is... green and orange? This kinda changed my life when I first heard it in 1987. Pretty sure I bought it with my lunch money, brought it home on the tarc bus and played it loud on my folks' Fisher console. In the years since, almost every music that connected with me had at least some punk influence... and this is unquestionably the quintessential punk album. Happy to add it to my queue.

Surf's Up by The Beach Boys
Dec 09 2025

Haven't listened lately, but got into it in the early aughts through the magic of internet piracy. Never would have bought it... it really had very little critical or popular esteem until this century. But it's very enjoyable. Not up to the standards if Pet Sounds... but what us? And being a sleeper record, it has the strong benefit of not being played-out and overhyped. I dig it.

Playing "Shahbaaz" rather than this, as this is not on Apple currently... but damn, this guy is prolific! Dozens, nay hundreds of recordings over the past several decades. No way I can commit to a deep dive here, but it is exciting music.

Love it. Cool they put the worst track at the end. I know "How Soon Is Now" was not on the original album... but it totally belongs on there.
