Reviews (page 15 of 15)

Not my type of music

Nice progression across just two long tracks. Nice listen and great to relax, think, work.

One of the best albums in this list. Great performance, fantastic songs and an important shift in music for Miles Davis and Jazz Music as a whole.

More up pace jazz

Not something I'll spend much time on but it's obviously great.

Sadly did not enjoy this album at all. It felt out of rhythym at times.

Ethereal, spare, transcendental. Jazz but not Jazz. Ambient textures, moods over melody. A masterpiece in minimalism that continues to influence. Its ground breaking cut and paste production stitched together by Teo Macero was ahead of its time, much like this album. Bitches Brew would send out musical shockwaves across the world six months later, but all the elements of that record, albeit more restrained, were present here first.

Mesmerising. Experimental. Not as immediately accessible as Kind of Blue to my ears but he takes you on a journey and spits you out feeling renewed. All in the space of 30 mins or so. This one’s staying on the list. The future may come back and tell you it’s a 5.

It was a little too repetitive for me. I prefer Kind of Blue.

Life is a river, and you can either yield to the currents or kick against it. Miles knows that, and finds that by yielding to the currents you wind up down all manner of tributaries you never expected to go down, and drift past sights you’d never have the time to notice if you’re kicking. And anyway, you all end up at the same place downriver anyway. It’s the journey isn’t it? Suffice to say, I loved it.

Thought I’d get something more out of this

To sanger på ~20 minutter hver? Elsk!

A masterpiece of creativity; not just the act (all albums do that, I suppose) but the feeling, the process, the thrill. Tune in and tag along as Miles & co head to destinations unknown, laying their tracks as they go, their reach just far enough ahead of their grasp that they don't fall off. Not that the journey feels precipitous, heading for the end of an unfinished bridge, oncmoing train, or slathering mouth of a recently landed outer-space monster. And that's because of THE crucial detail: we're following Miles, who's following his nose, which is the nose of a genius. So unless you're a genius (unlikely, no offense) you ain't felt nothin' like this before.

Very chill. Enjoyable to listen to. Was like one big piece of music. Would listen to whilst studying, but not what I'd usually listen to though so probably won't rate it as high as it should be.

Jazz jazz jazz

Total pimp move to only have two songs on an album. This is my only feedback

Two songs, too good. Generational talent.

Sounded nice but put me to sleep. Not really a jazz guy

Mellow and contemplative.

Wow, this album is stellar. Two tracks, the musicians all seem so in-tune with each other, but it all feels so relaxed and original. (This list is really getting me into Miles I guess?) 4.5/5

To be honest, this Miles record felt a lot more satisfying to me than Bitches Brew. It's clear he's pushing the edges of what qualifies as jazz with some interesting guitar work, but the structures just work a lot more for me. At least from my current vantage point -- I once again reserve the right to change my mind after spending more time with both.

Good for what it is, not something I would listen to again

Only 2 'songs'! I liked it, though I'm not sure I understand it all...

moody great rainy day album

jazzy! two songs takes 45 mins!

Miles Davis is a name you’ve heard many times before but have not necessarily listened to his music. Like me, you probably knew he played a saxophone...or was it a trumpet? And that he is also a jazz musician. I must admit I did not know anymore than this before listening to this album. My mind was even more curious after discovering there are only two tracks listed on the lp. I can say this though...without coming anywhere remotely close to being an aficionado of jazz or classic instrumental music, I certainly can appreciate the ability and dedication needed to play an instrument at such a level even an outsider and self confessed non-lover of the genre finds it more than enjoyable and even moving in an emotional sense. Do yourself a favour...if you haven’t already. 3 Stars

Great album, very enjoyable. It's amazing how much variety there is in Miles Davis' discography. This one is one of my favourites, I like the longer compositions and relaxed atmosphere, reminds me a little of sun's jazzier stuff

Miles Davis was smack in the middle of a period of profound transformation musically speaking when In A Silent Way Came Out. Inspired by his young drummer, Tony Williams, Davis was steadily abandoning the advanced harmonic underpinnings of jazz and emphasizing rock and R&B grooves in his music, putting him in the vanguard of the first wave of jazz fusion. The main thing he kept from the 2nd great quintet (Shorter, Williams, Davis, Carter, Hancock) was how the tunes themselves were just templates meant to be fleshed out in performance, and that is the case with a vengeance on In A Silent Way. The first tune, Shhh / Peaceful is 18 minutes and 15 seconds of one chord and a groove. It doesn't get any more basic than that. The only reason it works is because of the musicians: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Tony Williams, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and Dave Holland are seven of the greatest musicians to ever pick up an instrument. Each one is a monster player, composer, and band leader in his own right. Even so, there is precious little grandstanding on Shhh / Peaceful. Instead, the musicians weave around one another gracefully, painstakingly building the groove and providing peerless atmospherics that, in hindsight, sound almost proto-ambient. It's a little like slowly turning over the Hope diamond watching an ever changing light show through the facets. The other cut, In A Silent Way, starts with John McLaughlin stating the bucolic folk like melody over an open tuning on guitar. Originally, McLaughlin used Zawinul's jazzy chord changes, but Miles kept goading McLaughlin to go simpler, simpler. Finally, almost as a joke, McLaughlin went with an open E major chord and the rest is history. About ten minutes in, the R&B groove of It's About That Time kicks in. The band swings like crazy before ending the album with a reprise of the main theme. It's hard to overstate how successful Davis is here. On his first attempt at a communally based, performance driven, open ended rock and R&B influenced music, he comes up with a stone classic, only equaled and arguably surpassed by Bitches Brew a year later.

3/5 nice jazz sounds, but not special.

Va?! Helt ok, hade gett 3,5 men men

Pushing the boundaries of Jazz but still accessible. Mind blowing. There's only two tracks so for this one I only chose one. Best Tracks: Shhh/Peaceful

Was a little confused when it was 30+ minutes but only two songs. Then I listened and was straight vibin

oooh - nice - love me some Miles Davis! and 2 tracks...i assume side A and Side B are just a single track on vinyl...so cool

Lovely and relaxing, o my had ever listened to kind of blue

It gets a 2* for the talent. Not my cup of tea for an album to listen to.

His first jazz fusion album. Better length than Bitches Brew but not as inventive hence just shy of 5 again

Enjoyable. Good background music.

I've not heard this one before. I really like it, and an amazing lineup, particularly on keys.

Mmmmm Pow. Nice. Suuuuuuperb.

bitches brew lite

Jazzy but not a huge fan, very slow

some of these long tracks just make you lose track of time. not frenetic jazz like a few newer releases from Miles Davis.

Really good. Second track is stronger. 4+

There was nothing I didn't like, fantastic vibes

I thought this was a really sick jazz album. It was so moody and emotional, loved that.

Miles! MILES!!

nice jazz but the piano was a it too discordant which set me on edge so not a fully enjoyable listen for me

A banger, but maybe the longest banger ever

I enjoyed it

Oniric and relaxing record from the master of jazz

damn good

Good music but I find it boring. The only way I'd play this again is if I had people over, wanted background noise, but nothing so distinct or interesting that it'd be distracting to me or my company. But still, better than Sonic Youth.

Love Miles Davis

Meh. This made me feel like I was on hold with my insurance company

I like it a lot but it’s not something I could listen to all the time.

A two song album spanning almost 40 minutes... A bit too experimental for me, especially the organ/synthesizers

I LOVE ELECTRIC MILES! The music feels like drugs without the drugs. This period always feels fresh and exciting no matter how many times you listen.

Ambiance jazz music for days

Very nice tunes, special for letting the mind go

Fine for background listening but i can't give it more than a three tbh

Too mindful for me

Jazz. Simplemente agradable. Dos temas de 15 min cada uno.

Classy music to work by

Jazzy. Very moody

A true classic, I actually discovered this album through Bill Laswell's "Panthalassa" reworks. Then I went straight to the source. It brings back some memories of good old days.

Very Jazz. Really enjoyed it. Great background music whilst I work. Must revisit. It was a soundscape.

dont know much about jazz but enjoyed this especially as background music while working

Not my cup of tea

Meh. Just background music

Love the guitar on ‘in a silent way’ - in reading about this recording, Miles and the guitar player could not get on the same page and the tracks they used were the ones he played when Mikes told him to “play it like a novice” - guitarist was John McLaighlin

First impressions: A lot more organ and guitar than I've ever heard in a jazz album. Seemingly the beginnings of jazz "fusion". Not my favorite Miles Davis. His trumpet sounds harsher and can be downright annoying at times. Never felt this way in Kind of Blue.

I'm on board. An interesting listen that i will probably go back to.

Ah, that's the good stuff right there.

A hypnotic album that sits at the end of one era and the beginning of the next, while remaining its own thing.

The LP mixes are lo g but very worth it. Contemplating putting on my playlist

Awesomness.

Magnificent. So chilled!

2 long Jazz songs that made nice background music

2 songs 38 minutes? king behavior

Doot doot doot

Brings me back!

was alright, nothing riveting. But worth listening. Jazzy and soulful.

I really like this album. The musicianship is brilliant. Not always an easy listen but there is a lot of stuff going on. Definitely best experienced with a set of really good headphones to immerse yourself in.

Sooo good

Not bad. Would listen again if it was on.

DNF. Super boring.

Really good

I dug this album. More listenable to me that some of the more ambling jazz that Miles has done.

I don't think I have the ability to appreciate jazz enough and listening to this I can begin to but I still struggle to find differences in this compared to other jazz. Hopefully I will get more jazz albums that I will be able to start learning more about jazz.

This is a beautiful, dreamy album. It's one of his first forays in jazz fusion and it's a winner. I've listened to it enough times to know that this Aussie gives it five bags of Pods out of five.

Nutty album. Low 5 from me

Totally fine. Kind of Blue is definitely a better Miles Davis album

Haven't really got the taste for jazz yet

Love miles

Only two songs, but amazing. The sections weave seamlessly together.

Relaxing and enjoyable.

Good solid jazz listen.

guitar, rhodes, upright, organ, drums & trumpet. Lots of breathing room. Not dominated by Miles. Extreme panning as was popular back then. Drummer seems hooked on the 16th hihats.. gives a kind of Lalo Schiffrin Dirty Harry feel. My favourite parts are probably on the 2nd track where the band breaks down into an almost ambient vibe.

First time I’ve actually listened to Miles Davis even though I’ve heard his name referenced for so long on the Simpson’s!

incredible

Intricate blend of bluesy piano, saxophone, and guitar create a wonderfully jazzy soundscape however music and sound a little frustrating at times.

Esse cara é foda.

Still not a huge fan of Miles, but a landmark album that clear deserves to be on the list. But just background noise to me that I can't get into. Sorry!

Surprised when the album ended after two songs. Nice to listen to while working but wouldn't choose this over others.

Not my normal listening but quite enjoyed it.

2 tracks. Now that's commitment!

Nothing more than background music

Good freestlye jazz kinda music. Not my thing, but quality.

It was good, but not what I look for in Jazz. Not super chill, and not super funky, so I don't know when would be the best time to listen to it.

Dense 9/10

I didn't like this album as much as kind of blue. Miles Davis is still one of the best when it comes to trumpet and cool jazz.

Ubeat/chill mix across both tracks, guitar-y for Miles Davis. Ironside incidental music. Good for Liverpool->Southport train. 6/10

Calming for the soul

lombrado ne dificil

Well jazz is definitely not my thing. I have no idea where to start even comprehending what I heard. I mean, it probably is technically pure genius and all that other jazz (LOL), but I'm just too incompetent to understand it.

Pleasant enough, didn’t make me angry or anxious which can sometimes happen with jazz.

Another jazz album that's correct background music.

Finally, another jazz album, and one that I dearly love. Miles Davis never ceases to amaze me with the diversity of approaches to jazz that he was able to master 5/5

The album is exactly what I think of when I hear 'Jazz'. In that regard, I think that is a good thing. On the other hand, it wasn't terribly exciting.

Unimpressed. Maybe I just don’t understand it

Jazz fusion, jazz with electric instrumentation and back beat. Good background music.

Perfect Sunday morning vibes. What a joy

A legendary jazz record

I ended up listening to 5 hours of Miles Davis. Smooth music

A beautiful, mellow soundscape. Not dominated by Miles' trumpet, but is controlled by his mood and vision for our to arrange an ensemble.

Instrumental Jazzy thing. Not bad. Studying music really.

jazz not really my thing but this is quite intersting at times and easy to listen to

Connor: Another album by a big artist that doesn't really live up to some of their other works. It's kinda repetitive and I'm not a huge fan of the instrumentation. There's also not that much Miles Davis on here, which is curious.

Silent and chill

I’m not a huge jazz guy but you can’t deny miles Davis’ brilliance. Besides, this is some top tier background music

Modern Jazz is just too exciting for me to really get into this. I respect the talent tho

Miles the Magnificent

This was chill, but not too chill. Jazz fusion wasn't as bad as I expected, and the brass instruments really shone through without having an irritating timbre. Also, the cat really liked it. Curled up like the roundest little cinnamon roll.

An enthralling listen. Even if you don't know/care about its legendary status as the first jazz-rock fusion album, you will enjoy the music.
