Reviews (page 9 of 9)

Didn’t listen just really not my style

I actively want to stop listening to it after the first song.

Tina Turner's voice is too raspy for my taste. The 80s pop beats are so boring.

I don’t know what you call this type of pop, but whatever it is I hate it and everything it might have influenced.

Just not my jam.

I know this was huge back in 1984, but I could not stand any of this. Not only did it sound dated, but not my style of music,

Powerful voice... but unfortunately not much else is going on for me in this album. I have zero interest in the instrumentals (that seem to be little more than electronic drums and a cheesy synth). The production sounds like the worst of the 80s, it’s almost painful to listen. I tried to find reasons to give it a 2*, but I just couldn’t. I have nothing but respect for Tina Turner, she might have been an icon at some point in the 80s, but I can’t find any musical excitement here. Her voice is the only redeeming feature of this snoozefest. It should be clear by now that Tina Turner’s most magnificent contribution to pop culture was ruling the Thunderdome. 2/10

I can't believe people bought this. it was almost paionful to hear. Apart from the hit "What's love... " because it's been hamered in my brain for 4 decades. She's got a voice I give her that, but there's nothing else.

Utterly dated and uninteresting.

I did not like this album. It’s in this weird space between disco and 80s pop but does neither very well. I will say it is very evocative of an era; I can easily picture my mom in a suit with big shoulder pads singing along.

Oh, lol. I’m expecting 2 decent songs on this record. Tina Turner had a super unique voice, but come on, she wasn’t writing a ton of landmark songs. I have a vague recollection of her singing CCR covers not quite as well as the originals. Welp, here we go… I appreciate that Tina is 45 at the time of this recording, yet sounds every bit of 70...and a hard 70 at that. It probably sounds like I’m being a smartass, but her voice is the best part of what’s going on with this record. At points, she sounds like the female Tom Waits without the cool, carnival barker vibes. The rest of Private Dancer is really pretty terrible. One might wonder how she got so popular in the 80s? Truly, I think it’s a mystery. I was alive for the 80s, and musically, this is like a compilation of the worst parts of it. I guess I don’t hate “I Can’t Stand the Rain”, but probably more for the connection to Missy Elliot, who sampled it. Honestly, this record sucks pretty hard, and it’s very much a product of the time. The confounding thing is that there were SO MANY great artists making music at this time, but Tina Turner's Private Dancer feels like it's on a mission to dodge anything that actually made those great 80's artists great, and intentionally do the opposite. It feels like genuine, open rebellion against good taste. Oh gosh, there’s even an uninspired cover of Al Green on here. And it has a synthesizer solo. That poor son of bitch is undoubtedly turning in his grave. Fuck. This might be one of the worst records I’ve heard on this list. It’s better than Destiny’s Child, but maybe only because I take it marginally more seriously. It’s just so all-around fucking awful. Oh dear. The song, 1984…if it was a movie, it would be featured on Mystery Science Theatre 3000. 0.4/5 The 1-star review I’m shoehorned into giving this record is incredibly flattering. I’m only rating this record as highly as I am because I do like that she sounds like a 75 year old smoker at 45. And because of “I Can’t Stand the Rain”. Really, nothing else on this record goes right. The lyrics are so dumb, the music is laughably bad, and I have some legitimate questions about why she was a cultural phenomenon in the early 80s. Was she? Or was she popular because her husband was a bona fide piece of shit, and she just drew media coverage because of their relationship? Was that why we all knew who she was? It couldn’t be because of merit. It wasn’t because of this record. It can’t be because of this record. As I’m listening to this, I’m actually wondering which record producer owed someone a favor or lost a bet or something. No one will be able to ever convince me that anyone actually wanted to hear this record. Private Dancer really, truly blows.

I remeber when this was first released and I wasn't all that interested in it. I didn't like the title track or any of the singles I had heard. Hearing it for the first time I still don't like it. Her voice annoys me and the songs are boring. I don't get it.

Tina Turner is so incredible but this album felt just a bit too repetitive for me. It probably doesn’t help that I am not a huge 80s music fan and this album is pretty much as 80s as it gets.

I don’t know why since I like Tina Turner but I really did not enjoy this album at all. Sad to say it but 1/5

Tina Turner is the female iteration of Bruce Springsteen. Corny, tired and played out. I cant understand the appeal.

Tina has one volume, loud. Even when she tries to sing lower, she's way too loud. I'm also not the biggest fan of power ballads, and every song is a power ballad. Nope.

Private dancers are nasty ass tramps.

Not my cuppa

Can’t do it

I really did not connect with this album at all. Generic melodies with a frankly unappealing singing style made the songs come off very grating and hard to listen to at times. Unremarkable at its best, shrill at its worst

This album has a very cheesy, dated sound and it exemplifies what I hated about 80's music. I didn't even like the hits when they came out and the covers were meh to awful. I would never choose to listen to this.

Why not use a real piano when you are trying to get natural piano sounds? Because it's '80's pop music and it sucks. The 80's produced great music. So there is no excuse to sound like this.

They should have just left this where it belongs…..back in the 80’s! As bad as I expected unfortunately.

A tough listen. Can’t stand her voice and the songs are woeful.

Ouch, that production, those covers..

Not expecting to enjoy this much, but here goes... I have to say i slipped through songs I already knew. Show Some Respect is a straight ripoff of the Nutbush City Limits beat. Let’s Stay Together is OK, i guess. Steel Claw is Tina does Meat Loaf.

80s trash. She can't sing

omg!! older than others pop stars and STILL MAKING THE SAME SHITTY MUSIC NEVER BECOMING AN ARTIST .....AINOA HYVÄ BIISI PRIVATE DANCER INSENSITEETTI JA KUMMITTELAVA MELODIA JA LYYRIIKAT SOPII TÄYDELLISESTI... ymmärsikö itsekkään miksi niin special... kaikki muu on vain niin pitkää ripulipaskaa Mark knopfler genius.... vika biisi naulasi tämän ykköseen...

Awful. Classic, but awful.

Any old music won't do, Tina. Pretty dull and repetitive, with a screechy voice that made my throat feel sore. Petition to give Tina a throat lozenge?

Not a fan of this.

Beaucoup de reprises et j’aime pas sa voix C’est vraiment du commercial des années 80

Piercing vocals in a Pop, R&B Smoothie Maker. I won't relisten.

was horrific on the 80s couldn't listen to this

Never was into Tina in the 80s

I don’t usually give 1 star just because something isn't really my thing but this whilst not with merit for some people was pretty bad to my ears.

I could not finish it...

My God I hated this album when it came out. Proud to report my feelings haven't changed in 40 years.

Ugh, this was a chore to finish. Bad 80s synth and covers, I didn’t even like the Bowie collaboration.

The murder of Al Green is horrific and inappropriate.

This is hardly essential. Jeez.

This album might be OK, but I've had a lifelong aversion to the raspy croak of Tina Turner's voice, I just can't even open it. Am I missing out? Maybe. Do I care? Fuck no.

This is so thoroughly not my thing. I can hardly get through the aggressive 80s instrumentals and kind of showy yet not-pleasant-whatsoever vocals.

Not for me not a Tina fan at all

She's a good singer, but her voice is a complete mismatch with the super clean emotionless 80s production. Quite a few cover songs. None of them are better than the original. I don't like the originals on this album very much either. Favorite song: I can't stand the rain.

I tried to listen to the whole thing to understand and appreciate this, but it's really just like nails on a chalk board to me.

Oh come on! Big-haired pop-rock with over the top vocalising. No one really has to hear this before they die. It was tedious enough having to put up with the singles back in the day. Still, I suppose if you like this sort of thing...

Nej! var det första jag tänkte. Fulla mormorsTina har jag hittills lyckats förtränga.

I have no desire to listen to Tina Turner.

Corny as hell. Good singing tho

Really did not like her Al Green cover.

Knew the hits but nothing really did much for me. It's very 80s.... But not the good kind The cover of help was pretty shite Sorry Tina

Quite like the typography on the sleeve cover...

Maybe the most 80’s album I’ve ever heard. Lots of classics I guess, but I don’t feel like the music behind the vocals has aged well. Some songs are just too long (private dancer felt like it played twice in a row).

I really disliked this. She’s not writing songs or playing a note on here so what am I judging on? The songs selection, her delivery, the visual? It’s mostly covers, so we’re got writing credits of Al Green, Lennon-McCartney, Bowie, Knopfler… you’d expect some decent tracks? Her tone? aaaaah. Reading her Wiki just now and early label boss described it (as a good thing) like “screaming dirt”. I think I can agree with that. And her image… It falls for me somewhere between drunken aunty at a wedding disco and 3rd rate drag act. Maybe because she’s so iconic she is actually the genesis of these things but either way, it’s mutton dressed in leopard print and I am not a fan. It’s like the Rod Stewart of people - hard pass.

I hate Tina Turner so much. This album typifies everything shit about music of this era

Usually with the big names that I'm not into, I can at least understand on a cognitive level why somebody would be interested. In Tina Turner's case, I don't get it at all. She's an awful vocalist and the arrangements aren't doing her any favors either. The cover of Help! is one of the worst things I've heard in a long time. Best track: What's Love Got to Do with It, I guess

I was considering two stars, 80s awful production notwithstanding, as her performance is great, until Help and 1984. Help indeed. Imagine a loop of Tina's 1984 in your ears forever. Far scarier than anything Orwell could come up with.

Not for me

I wanted to like this, mostly because I havent liked a lot of synth heavy 80s top 40 pop (see Cyndi Lauper). I just didn't enjoy it.

Familiar 80s pop. Dreadful in so many ways

other than the few songs I already knew... meh

Still hate it

hot garbage

Not my jaaams

Not feeling it. A few track that were close to being cool but just comes across cheesy.
