Lekker veel energie gooit die Tina er tegenaan!

Sexy and groovy pop record with that tinge of 80s while sounding timeless!

Not my favorite style but I like some of the songs

I definitely have respect for Miss Tina - she is an icon - but I don't really love the mid-eighties synth-pop production of this album. Some strong moments here but overall I think it's just so-so. 3 stars.

Pretty Solid, very 80s and in a way quite like prince, liked it a lot more than I expected.

Songs are good, couple I knew already, but nothing great. 2.5/5

Good but not my thing

Love Tina 3

Com a edição comemorativa estendida foi possível apreciar a potência do vocal e versões marcantes de hits.

Sooooo…..I’m very conflicted about this album. In 1984 is was probably a banger. However, knowing what I know about Tina and Ike Turner’s relationship, this album reads more like a victims plea for help rather than a pop masterpiece. What’s Love and Let’s together are timeless pop songs. Buuuuut… Private Dancer, Better Be Good to Me, and Help and particularly brutal songs in the light of such heinous domestic abuse crimes. Tina’s voice is timeless, and maybe this album as well, but it will always be haunted by Ike.

Not necessarily my favorite genre of music to listen to as a whole album, but Tina Turner has such a powerhouse voice that she makes each song impressive to hear. What's Love Got To Do With It is a great song and I enjoyed the Al Green and Beatles cover songs too

About as in the middle as you can get. I enjoy her voice and she's fun to listen to but I think there were too many fluff songs on here. Maybe if some of the songs hadn't been included I would have enjoyed it as a whole more.

This album was fine. I have zero feeling towards it whatsoever.

It had a Grace Jones vibe that I never noticed.

-The arpeggio (?) into cool synth riff in "I Can't Stand the Rain" is pretty cool -"Private Dancer" is definitely gonna be stuck in my head -"Steel Claw" is a total jam. Fast moving instrumental and intense vocals. It's competing for my favorite track on the album -Cool cover of "Help!" by The Beatles -Very cool cover of "1984" by David Bowie. I was not familiar with this track before but I really like Turner's cover. High energy, lots of great vocal lines

Zabavan i dobar album, nije loše.

Only got halfway through

Decent album, just not really my style. 2.5/5

much better than i thought - really hits that 80s vibe

Some fun tracks, but not something I would usually listen to a whole album of. It did inspire some adorable toddler dancing, though.

Quite dated sound, it seems to me. But there's still some great tracks to keep and return to -- What's Love, Steel Claw, and Can't Stand the Rain

Interesting time capsule!

Bitchin!

Oh well, not bad.

I've always struggled with Tina

You could pack this up in a little bumbag, pop a blonde mullet on it, and call it the Eighties.

idk what to say lol its tina turner. the music is good but i didnt really like it

Some absolute gems, lots of ok

Better than expected but didn’t wow me.

Mad synthesizer in the back. There's nothing to the instruments. Doesn't hold up at all.

Yeah it gets a bit samey after a while, but it is very grooveable

Surprisingly enjoyable 3

In context an amazing comeback built on mostly covers. But no, I don't want to see her do the shimmy again.

What's fascinating about Private Dancer was the overall unlikelihood of Tina Turner ever being a household name in the 80s. She was seen as someone who didn't have a good track record and was largely described as being better off with her abusive husband; not one to be taken seriously as a long overdue solo juggernaut. Private Dancer changed that. It is a little strange hearing cover versions of songs that sound good in it's original configuration being tooled up for 80s showcasing and some of it works (Let's Stay Together) while others are best left untouched (I Can't Stand the Rain, Help!). Overall, while not a perfect record, Private Dancer gives insight into how Tina became the rock legend she is today and beyond. Favorites: I Should Have Been Queen, What's Love Got to Do With It, Show Some Respect, Private Dancer, Let's Stay Together, Better Be Good to Me, Steel Claw.

A few bops, nothing particularly incredible but nothing too bad either

Some great songs in there, and there's an undoubtedly great voice in there. But: the entire album is so deeply anchored in that “classic” eighties sound I found it hard to tolerate in its entirety. Way too much of an eighties overdose!

It's exactly what one would expect. Good voice. Also there's a cat on the album cover, just noticed that while writing this sentence.

I bought the 12" of Let's Stay Together in 1983 pretty much as soon as it came out in 1983, completely oblivious to the existence of the Al Green version in those days. Still love it but much of the rest of the album leaves me cold.

Very 80's, but not awful.

Listened to on 4/25/22 2/5 Favorite song: what’s love got to do with it I wanted this album to be better than it was - only one solid bop and BIG 80s fluffy hair energy

It was meh. Didn’t really love anything. Even What’s Love Got to Do With It wasn’t that amazing.

4/25/22 This album is 80s to the max. It feels like something that would be playing over the radio at my dentists office and that’s because this is what they play on daytime radio! I knew several songs, but I don’t really like any of them. Feel very neutral towards this album. Favorite song: What’s love got to do

4/23/2022 Today's Album: "Private Dancer" by Tina Turner - This album is an 80s pop album that can pretty much be split right down the middle in terms of quality. The first leg of this record is so promising. The opening track is immediately really funky and features a lot of really interesting instrumentation. The vocal performances from Tina feel powerful and confident and each following track just shows that off. What's Love Got to Do with It has this really cool reggae beat in the chorus and overall is just a great 80s love ballad. Show Some Respect kicks the energy back up and at this point it is clear that this entire album is going to feel incredibly 80s, but so far it has been pulled off with some serious expertise. The chorus kicks ass, even if it sounds just slightly underdeveloped. I Can't Stand the Rain has this really cool production to it, sounding very unique for a song of it's style. There's this tinking percussion noise that repeats until the song picks up with some seriously cool percussion and synth work that creates a really cool atmosphere. Private Dancer is a great track that gives a lot of insight into the life of a private dancer and the insecurity involved with that line of work. The first half could almost be cut into a short and sweet single, but the guitar work in the second half before the last chorus feels really ahead of it's time and adds a ton of charm to the track. Let's stay together is a great bait and switch, starting with this really slow ballad verse before opening up into this really fun funky track with this really cool synth solo and a lot of interesting production throughout. And with that, Better Be Good to Me begins the slow decline of this album. I still like the overall feel of this track, but it doesn't really reach a similar high as the rest of the tracks so far and begins this trend of every song sounding like another 80s band could have easily done it and probably done it better. Steel Claw literally sounds like that "saturday" song from the 80s and doesn't do much to deviate from it. Help! is perhaps one of the worst beatles covers to ever exist. 1984 is generic and the mix feels really unbalanced. I wrote a letter sounds like a bad blondie song. Rock n' Roll widow doesn't have too bad of an instrumental, but the lyrics are really corny and the vocal performance is just kind of weak. The rest of the songs continue this trend with unlikeable and generic 80s tracks that don't do much to improve to the album at all and often make it much worse. I would absolutely recommend the first half of this album as one of the best examples of 80s synth pop, but the 2nd half is bound to put anyone to sleep. Listen to the first half if it sounds good and just don't listen to the first half if you respect your time Score: 5/10 fifty fifty Highlights: Soul Survivor, What's Love Got To Do With It, Show Some Respect, I Can't Stand The Rain, Private Dancer, Let's Stay Together, Better Be Good To Me

The Broadway show chronicling my life will open with “1984.”

Tiene dos de sus canciones más famosas: What's Love Got to Do with It y Private Dancer. El resto no me han llamado la atención.

This is my first time listening to a Tina Turner album and given her reputation, I had high hopes. After listening I was sorely disappointed. I her vocals to be fine but the instrumentation on a lot of songs just reeked of the 80s and I think that spoiled it a lot.

Good old school album

Godddd this album is long. I liked the stuff got through but still 10 songs left

3 comme le nombre de semaines qu’il m’a fallu pour terminer l’album

The balls on Ms. Turner to sing about being a private dancer at 45 years old in 1984 when women were still fighting against such a horribly ageist and misogynistic industry - trailblazer! This album is full of hits. Enjoyed it a lot.

Not a fan of tina’s voice

I see how it's a classic - so many radio hits and must have been groundbreaking for its time. Especially coming from a more mature woman of color who was so on top of the trends. I can respect that, but too much treble for me!

Love her voice and tone. Not the biggest fan of the album though. Stand outs are What’s Love Got to Do With It and the Bowie cover.

pretty classic

Songs like 'What's Love Got to Do With It' are familiar on a very eighties sounding album (guitars, effects, production, keyboards, tempo are all in that mold). Tina Turner is in very good voice and the songs are catchy. It's very much a rock orientated album rather than soul which I like. I probably enjoyed it more than I care to admit, mainly due to Turner's vocals but ultimately I probably wouldn't choose to listen to it again. I might go and listen to 'River Deep Mountain High' now though!

Nostalgia crept back in for me, the single releases are still great sing-alongs. The rest of the songs, despite Tina's powerful vocals, feel dated and largely forgettable. (I'm ignoring that Beatles' cover.)

She's a classic. But, I've never been grabbed by her stuff to be honest.

Never really listened to Tina Turner before but I enjoyed this album. Highlight for me was Private Dancer.

An archetypal 80s yuppie CD. Tina's evergreen voice plays second place to the then-popular "more is more" production. Lots of 80s tropes, bits of Pat Benatar, covers of Al Green and Bowie, and noticable Heaven 17 production. I thought I'd hate this yacht-soul album but it's interesting enough for a tentative thumbs up. And Tina can wail, it's undeniable.

Ah, what a voice, what power & what energy. I love so much of her early music. But this huge album surprised me with how much of it felt tired and aged. It's more a reflection on power ballads than Tina though.

Turner takes from each of the previous decades to craft a post-Disco comeback brimming with sheen and attitude.

Couple of absolute bangers on here but outside of that lots of generic 80s music and not-quite-as-good-as-the-original-but-still-decent covers. Pretty much the definition of a 3/5

Pretty good 80s pop. Fav track “What’s love got to do with it”

Poprock, covers, god vokal

This isn't my cup of tea. But I can appreciate the talent.

Essential 80s - but not really standing the test of time

I want to like this album, but there is not much carrying it other than Tina Turner's incredible voice. The cover of I Can't Stand the Rain is just a worse copy of the original. The Let's Stay Together and Help! covers add nothing to this album. A lot of the musical accompaniment is pretty uninspired. This album could have really been something if better music was matched up with Turner's vocals, but as it is this album is a couple of highlights without much to fill it in 3/5

1/14/22

Such authentic 80's synth.

Good 80s album.

we all know the hits, but there are some other good tracks on the album. it was a good comeback for her, an emancipation.

Tina Turner Assoziationen: Jüngste Oma der Welt. Geprügelt von Ike. Mad Max 3. Towuhabohu! Ist so meine Kindheit im Fernsehen, bissl wie Joe Cocker. Eh gut, sie singt super, passt.

not bad tina, not bad!

Some classic tunes, Great to revisit and remember when I saw Tina live but not one I’d play regularly

Was torn between rating this good for the high energy power tracks Tina's great at, or badly for everything else. So I guess it's a 3...

Some great songs but overall a solid 3

It's an okay album, I have to say Private Dancer is a good song when you first hear it, but it no longer fascinates me, or moves me. This time listening to this album I found myself going back to Steel Claw over and over.

Eighties tastic-strangely enjoyable.

Seemed dated, and did not enjoy as much as I thought I would. Great voice and “What’s love got to do with it” is a good hit, but otherwise just ok.

Couple of beatles covers.

11/16/21 - A lively listen. Title track is a heartbreaker. Insane that all music sounded like this in the 80s. Totally flat, plastic, hermetically sealed. Not a huge fan of her howl but the energy is contagious regardless.

Never diverges from total high energy which becomes monotonous after a while. Couple of big hits in there though

Tina Turner is amazing but this album doesn’t do anything for me.

Pretty good. 6-7/10

Half of the songs are GREAT. The rest are a little dated now. Great for its time though. 3/5. Help is not on the US version of the Album. We were missing something, Nice version of the Beatles classic. Standouts: Private Dancer, What's Love Got to do With It, I Can't Stand the Rain, Let's Stay Together, Help.

Alright album with one great pop song. The album has a couple covers which doesn’t show originality but Tina Turner is a great talent. It’s a quick fun album but it’s highlight is the famous song. 5.6/10

I enjoyed this slightly more than I expected to. The hits are bangers. Despite Kelsey trying to explain it to me, I still do not understand what a second hand emotion is. The covers definitely diminished the album as a whole. Turner has great pipes, but it just made me wish I were hearing the originals. Fun to hear where that Missy Elliot sample came from.

Tina Turner is like old lady hot? I remember my mom listening to her when I was a kid. I felt like Turners voice was so aged? it's a beautiful voice, but I get kind of weirded out when she starts talking the more sexy game. Like, Good for her ya know? but also, I know so much about her life and it's sorta sad. She's got some solid vocals and it's a solid album with some real classics.

Singles / Hits sind pure 5.0er wert. Rest nicht der Rede wert. Einigen wir uns auf den Absoluten Mittelwert ? 2.5

Ended up on the very extended 30th anniversary edition and had to take a look at the more manageable original track list. Nothing extraordinary beyond what’s love got to do. Impressive vocals but mediocre supporting music for most of the album. What’s love got to do, let’s stay together, better be good to me

In the 2021HBO documentary "Tina", Tina Turner admits she thought the original Bucks Fizz version of "What's Love Got to Do With It" was "terrible". A snippet of the song is played, and you totally agree with Tina. She's eventually sold on the idea of the song's potential, and Tina takes this bland, vanilla song and turns it into a goddamn fireworks show. She does the same thing with her cover of "Let's Stay Together". But for my money, the essential track from Private Dancer - the one song I'd put in a time capsule to exemplify Tina Turner at the peak of her powers in 1984 - is "Better Be Good To Me". It wasn't as big as "What's Love" but it has more staying power. It hints at the young Tina Turner who took "Proud Mary" and set that thing on fire, leaving CCR in the dust. It made all the sense in the world that Tina would have a second act in that magical musical year of 1984. It was also a peak year for MTV, and Tina popped off the screen in her videos with seduction and sex appeal that spoke to an audience that didn't care she was 44 years old, and had no idea she had an earlier life making amazing records with an abusive husband. We were just waiting for Tina to show up, and she fit right in alongside Madonna and Cyndi Lauper to provide real star appeal. I'm not crazy about the black cat on the album cover hiding Tina's legs. It's disappointing that "It's Only Love", her collaboration Bryan Adams, ended up on his album Reckless and not here. But I get it, Adams wrote the song so he dictates terms. Turner's dynamic force is almost enough to soar over the dated instruments prominently on display here. It's so great that Tina is getting one more victory lap at the end of her life, getting long overdue recognition by the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Her comeback in 1984 is one of the greatest in rock history. Hell, she lived long enough to see her own Bio-Pic. We can still recognize Tina's solo career while also acknowledging her best songs were with Ike. You really should seek out old footage of Tina doing Proud Mary to truly comprehend what a force of nature she was. Actual rating is 3.5.

Good. Not my fav style but i can appreciate this as good album, very consistent.

I wish I could give half stars for this as I really enjoyed the first half of the album. The second half is still solid, but more than a few could have been removed. Overall, I liked it and need to make more of an attempt to listen to her catalog.

1984 was not like 1984

Dated production, but strong songs, and always good to listen to her voice. One of those albums where I can picture a particular location for a listening session. (Annie Paynter's house). Horrific covers of Help! and Bowie's 1984 at the end.

strong voice interesting instrumentals very cool

It's fine, not my thing.

Simple 80s fun

Great danceable R&B tunes!

"What's Love Got to Do With It" is, of course, a classic. The rest is too 80s for my taste.

A few great tunes here - I particularly love her voice on Let's Stay Together. A few really dated-sounding tracks (1984, esp!) that bring the whole effort down a bit. She's an icon, no doubt, but I'd prefer a greatest hits collection to this full album.

This is so 80s I felt myself growing a full perm and shoulder pads as I listened. It's beautifully produced classic pop, containing some of the most recogisaable songs from that decade. As an unapologetic lover of most things 80s, even though I'm not a big Turner fan, this tickles all the right nostalgia places. A fun listen and a fun singalong.

decent, song got better at some parts but at most its mediocre

Quintessential 80’s. Tina showed her ability to stand out as a solo act on this record, but I could’ve sworn “What’s Love” was faster paced.

Este álbum encontra se extremamente datado, a partir da primeira nota ouvimos anos 80. Tina tinha uma boa voz mas pop está longe de me agradar. Nota:5/10

Sounds quite dated now, but still interesting and the covers are good

A classic but...

Guuuud va långt, kommer inte kunna lyssna på hela. Whats love bla bla bla är enda anledningen till att den får en 3/5

decent production carried this project, with not a lot to hold onto in the lyrical dept but these are big fun 80s pop tracks. Title track was 7 minutes and fairly overdone by the time it wrapped though

Strong start Tina, unfortunately as the album went on it fell a bit flat for me in places. The good songs on there do just about enough for me to give it 3*

You know what you're getting withna Tina Turner album. Well crafted catchy pop with the odd belter.

I appreciate the clear vocal and production talent, just not my cup of tea

eh. i'll give it 6/10. overall i think this sounded pretty generic, but there were fun tunes here and there. the cover of help! is actually really cool. her lower register is rough at times, but when when she belts it's fantastic.

I'm actually not even really interested in listening to this one... but I will.

A lot of very good individual songs, not a classic album when all put together

Not a bad album. "What's Love Got to Do with it" is the most popular song by far. Rest is alright. 6/10.

Some good cheese.

I quite liked this. Very 80’s movie vibe throughout the whole thing and not a huge variety but was an easy listen.

Solid 3. No doubt Tina is a talent, but this isn't my jam.

Another classic 80's pop album. I left it playing and it went like a breeze. It's got its couple of megahits so it sounds somewhat familiar, but it's not what I'd play on a daily basis.

fun album

Great record of this era. I was disappointed there weren't more BANGERS in here, but overall very solid.

Not bad.

I can dig this

Classic

good but wasn’t the vibe for the day

Some very interesting covers (and then there was 1984...). Seemed pretty uneven with just a couple of standout tracks.

classic

Excellent collection of powerful 80s tunes. I had only ever really heard What's Love Got to Do With It, so I have a new found appreciation of Tina Turner. Highlights: -What's Love Got To Do With It -Private Dancer -1984

It’s ok just very 80s pop which isn’t my fav genre

Favorites: What's Love Got to Do with It, Show Some Respect, Let's Stay Together, 1984 The fifth solo album by Tina Turner, it was what propelled her into becoming a solo star after several challenging years of going solo after divorcing her husband and performing partner Ike Turner. Her best-selling North American album. Blends sounds from rock, pop, smooth jazz and r&b throughout a mixture of uptempos and ballads.

Great album

Solid 80's album. Everything you would expect from Tina

She's a legend, but I wouldn't grab this album for listening on a whim.

hits are real bangers, covers are meh

Tina’s voice is the stand out, defiant & emotional. Feels like a greatest hits. Not a massive fan of the production

Tina is very talented and an icon in the music world. That being said, I am NOT a fan and would never have listened to this album if it wasn't for this app. I knew a few songs. I listened to the expanded edition with extra tracks. Will probably never listen to this record again..... it's not bad, just not my thing.

I just can't do this artist and style of music.

I heard like 4 songs and dipped. Not my vibe. Some of them were ok to listen to but I couldn't listen to and entire album Review - 4/10

#430 / 1089 Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❌ I have heard this album way back when. The blend of pop music on it is not really my thing, I do however love her voice, especially on the soul stuff she has done. 2/5

Really didn't like this. It's been done SO much better by loads of other people before and since.

Synonymous with providing the backing to various boomer targeted TV advertising and Radio 2 playlist fodder. I'm just not going to bother; its not for me. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ❌️ nah Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆(4/10) Default Total reviewed : 369 Already owned : 79 Purchased : 16 To buy : 7 Nope : 267

Might have been a case of good album, wrong day, but this is sounding very dated to my ears. Add on top of that, I'm not huge on her voice (very sharp), and you got an album I'm just not enjoying. Let's Stay Together is not as good as the original either.

This honestly feels super dated and idk just overall not my kinda pop music. Too middle aged divorced mom core. Bring me back the Cyndi Lauper chaotic ass pop. I really liked the production on I can’t stand the rain, why does it keep going back to these basic ass super flat and dull beats bro. (Update steel claw goes crazy but that’s like basically rock at that point) This one dragged for me.

I mean what does love got to do with it seriously. It’s so 80s the synthesizer is out here in feel force and Tina has such a commanding voice. It’s so authentic and real in some Places and really boring in others. I think her comeback after her divorce was a strong outing and swings hard but many times I wished for more. I see the potential but the story of being held down and finally escaping and 6 years later you finally come back and make your biggest hit of course it’s a story. Pop rock was in full swing in 1984. Private dancer is a story of returning and the title track is just that a dancer who wants to work again and I think it worked. Her voice is the star here and every thing else kinda falls feels like the band doesn’t want to fully embrace her it just really feels off. I wish I liked more. The covers were fun though I wish help! was better but let’s stay together is really really good. All in all it’s just okay but I expected more from Tina

Some good moments but didnt do much for me

1.8 1x once was enough. not sure why i never really liked this music. i remember it being really popular as a kid

A solid album, though rather 80sesque. Mind blown to know Knopfler wrote Private Dancer.

I can't stand the rain banger with the intermissions or whtvs u call em NGL it's not my type of rock, but I can appreciate the grandiose

This feels weirdly dated, as if it was out of fashion even at time of release. I can't put my finger on it. Maybe the stately piano, the fact that soul was petering out in the mid-80's, maybe the weirdly chunky production are the reasons why. That aside, it's a decent album. Lots of good songs with some capable musicians that is dragged down by an over the top and distracting set of arrangements. The several coats of unnecessary polish and in your face instrumentation really wears on me, and I find it tough to get through the album. Personally, the only song I enjoyed the whole way through was "I Can't Stand the Rain." But I recognize that this genre isn't my forte, especially when it's covered in three coats of 80s glam.

Just fine. I get why Tina was so popular but everything other than her voice is not very good here.

Glad Proud Mary wasn’t on this!

I hated everything about this

Liked this more than Madonna. Got a way better voice, way more sass and class First 5 songs were good. Private Dancer is a cracking song. Bit long. And Lets Stay Together and Help were all over the place. In a bad way. Think theyve demoted it from 3 to a 2.5 you know.

I can see why people like Tina but not for me. She has some good songs but I don’t think I needed to hear a full album

Didn’t like it much

i didnt like this much. Her voice is powerful, but lacks warmth, the 80's production and the number of questionable covers really brings this down. The obvious hits save this from being a 1

Decent original songs, a great talent, but those covers are atrocious

Я бы пошел в приват с Тиной Тернер

thank the fucking lord. quite possibly the greatest comeback in all of western pop history? it's 80s shlock. cheese (barrett will eventually show up to mention the yamaha dx7) even. but sometimes that cheese is magareći sir. and the rest has tina fucking turner on it. what's love got to do with it indeed. 2.2-3.1. the good songs hit me in the parts that defend michael franks and sembello in the same breath. the rest makes me sudoku.

A bit too "wooHOOhooooooOOOOOOHHHoooOOOHHHHHHHWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!" for me

J'ai du mal avec la musique solo de Tina, qui tend plus vers la variété. Cependant c'est toujours un plaisir d'écouter You Better Be Good To Me, What's Love Got To Do et Private Dancer. Mention special pour Steel Claw. J'adore l'intro de Let's Be Together.

Album #165 Tina Turner: Private Dancer The album was a lot more rock than I expected and her voice more harsh than I expected. That being said there are some obvious hits on here, but other than those not too much to return to. Just a solid 80s pop record, pretty much exactly what you’d expect from the mainstream stars of that era. Best Songs: Private Dancer, What’s Love Got to Do with It, I Can’t Stand the Rain Worst Song: 1984 Score out of 10: 5.5

Pretty mediocre honestly mostly just covers I like the title track but that's about it 4/10 Favourite: Private Dancer Least Favourite: 1984

The musics not really for me but I'll give her 2 because I like her

Tina was a well deserved legend who went through a lot in her life. I’m very happy that people find enjoyment in her music. I’m just not one of those people. I could not finish this album. Just not my personal taste. Side note: years ago, at a music festival, some friends and I walked away when Ike’s set started. Because …you know.

An album of its time… didn’t really age well

känns som hon driver?

An incredible story and a few good hits, but no much more.

Mmmmm I remember her around the time of this album, and then I discovered all her stuff with Ike - which is very good, this album was rather boring

80's compressed production and dated synth sounds. Too many covers. Even Tina's voice couldn't save this.

she’s great i just didn’t like this all that much

very 80s. "show some respect" bangs. i was excited to hear her cover of "help!" but cmonnn the point of that song is that the lyrics contrast with the upbeat feeling of the music. you can't just make it sad. overall not my cup of tea.

A couple good songs, but overall I didn't vibe with the album.

Not my type

Some decent enough songs utterly undermined by some unbelievably 80s production choices. Also the covers are terrible.

Oui elle a une belle voix… mais bon… 1h50 quoi. C’est très très vite chiant

A couple of good songs and an amazing voice but horrible music. Sounds like it was made on an Atari 2600.

Tina has a powerful voice and I love a lot of her '70s output, but this is near unlistenable. The '80s production on this is beyond awful. So much synth, canned drums, overly-affected guitars and bass, everything compressed so hard there are no dynamics; this is the worst of everything the '80s pushed in pop. I don't know who thought making the Beatles Help! into a ballad (with a VERY '80s sax solo I might add) was a good idea, but I hope they lost their job. How THIS is what propelled her to superstardom, I will never understand.

It was okay

Catchy on the singles, corny 80s production

Interesante y lleno de visa

One good song, a lot of screeching, and some absurd covers.

All of these reviews praising her voice? Does it really shine thru here? Shes basically speaking thru half of the album. I think her live performances and more powerful tunes might be clouding judgment. I realize im not the target audience, however this is just a big miss. The production and arrangements are horrendous, and too many covers.

This album is right in my wheelhouse. I was there for her rise into superstardom, at least solo superstardom. I just assumed she was always a superstar, but after she got away from Ike Turner, the poster boy for abusive husbands, her solo career went nowhere. But fate wanted Tina Turner to win, and along comes this rocketship called Private Dancer. Private Dancer came out in 1984. I was 10 years old that year, so I wasn’t fully into my metal years. I was still a dumb kid who listened to pop radio, or more likely country radio, at that time. However, you couldn’t escape Tina Turner and the singles off this album. I’m just hoping that hearing all those songs over and over in my formative years doesn’t squelch my enjoyment of listening to them today. Let’s see. Track 1 is I Might Have Been Queen and it sounds like the 80s, but it’s funky. It kind of sounds like the Eurythmics music. I like it. Very 1980s inspirational music playing in the chorus. Not a bad way to open the album. Track 2 is What’s Love Got To Do With It, a song I feel like I’ve heard 100,000 times. This was the first U.S. single issued from the album. There were seven singles in all released from the album, though three were just released in the United Kingdom and one was released in all of Europe. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t eventually end up on U.S. radio or MTV. This song is a good song, very reggae-sounding. It has the same 80s sound that track 1 did. I've heard it so much that it is what it is by this point. Track 3 is Show Some Respect and it sounds a little more like her stuff with Ike Turner. However, the music is being played with 80s instruments, so you have the weird synth sounds and electronic drums. The guitar does sound nice and mean, assuming it too isn’t a synth. I’m disgusted with myself as I feel like I’m getting into this song the longer it plays. I have no idea why. It’s a good song, I guess. Kids today want to talk about rizz? Tina Turner had rizz. She has so much, she’s making me like this song. Track 4 is I Can’t Stand the Rain and yes, it’s the song from the Missy Elliot song, though not this particular version. The song was originally recorded by Ann Peebles in 1973. I guess Tina’s producers thought they needed to update a song with all of the goofy electric instruments they had in the studio. Again, if it wasn’t Tina Turner, I’d quit listening to this song and possibly this album. It’s a shame Tina Turner couldn’t sell records without resorting to the current sound on the radio in 1984. Track 5 is Better Be Good To Me. It was the fourth single off the album. It was a top 5 song in the U.S. It starts out with machines making the sound of machines. I assume this song is about Ike? Maybe not, it wasn’t written by Tina. I’m not sure Tina was a songwriter. She has no writing credits on the album. Again, Tina’s charisma, down to her adlibs, really elevates the music on this album and especially this song. Track 6 is Let’s Stay Together and I’m sure you’ve heard this song, and if you haven’t, stop reading and go find Al Green’s version. You’ll thank me. Why anyone would want to remake a classic, perfect song is beyond me. But maybe Tina and her producers found a new angle. Ugh. They essentially turned it into elevator music. I hate this so much. Tina sounds fine, but the music has taken what was soulful out of the song and replaced it with what I assume satan uses to torture souls in hell. It’s so bland and just gross. I’m skipping ahead. Track 7 is 1984, and I must admit, I just want to quit listening to this album. 1984 was written by David Bowie, who loved Tina snf helped her in her solo endeavors. This song sounds like the time period, but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. Tina is singing the hell out of this song. Damn, I really like this song. I think they could’ve released it as a single. It sounded more like a rock song, and Tina sang it that way. May be the best song on the album. But it was a Bowie song, so, of course, it would be great. Track 8 is Steel Claw, and it has a bit of a rock sound. It gives me Jim Steinman vibes, you know, the songwriter for Meatloaf. This sounds like that 1980s Bryan Adams, Loverboy type hard rock. I think this could have been a rock hit if released as a single. Just when I was ready to trash this album, I got back-to-back, really interesting songs. Track 9 is Private Dancer, and it’s seven minutes long. I assume the one I heard all those years ago was a radio edit. This song doesn’t start so in your face with the 80s production. It’s very tasteful with a beautiful piano as the lead instrument. This song, while it sounds like the 80s, mutes the overblown production and it's quite a good song. Fun fact: Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straits, wrote the song, and guitar god Jeff Beck played the guitar solo in the song. Is your mind blown? Mine was. Damn, that was a great solo by Beck. This song is probably the best on the album, though I loved 1984 and Steel Claw a lot. It’s just a solid song with no frills. If you’re an 80s music fan, you’ll probably dig this album, but…wait a minute. I’m listening to the 30th anniversary edition, and Tina recorded a cover of The Beatles’ Help. This is a great cover version. It’s slowed down and sung more as an R&B jam. It’s a sad song now, rather than an upbeat, fun pop song. Just a gospel piano and some bad-sounding drums with a choir helping Tina with the vocals. This album is so weird. Now here comes the sitcom theme song music saxophone to play a solo. This song is going off the rails now. Don’t listen to this album, it’s not worth the three, maybe four decent songs. I assume this is on the list because of her commendable escape from Ike Turner and her career resurrection. I love Tina Turner, but this album can kick rocks.

Tina’s got a great voice but this one is just completely buried in 80’s overproduction

It was okay a couple great songs!

Tina Turner's comeback record may have been a huge success back in the day, this album hasn't exactly aged well. The production here feels dated and artificial. Turner has an objectively good voice, but her constant vocalisations do get grating. As impressive as some of those notes are, hearing her strain her vocal cords to the limit every other songs gets old quick. The covers are a mixed bag. While her Al Green cover of 'Let's Stay Together' is a serviceable attempt at bringing that song into the next decade, her take on 'Help!' is rotten. She strips the urgency away from the Beatles original and turns it into a soppy piano ballad with zero bite. The big singles such as 'What's Love Got To Do With It?' and the title track are enjoyable slices of pop cheese. Good for her for getting out of Ike's shadow, but I don't think I will ever feel the need to revisit this.

She's an icon. I know. This is peak mid 80s suburb rock. Couldn't do it then and I can't do it now. Extra star for not having as much sax as I figured it would.

Skipped a lot, not for me

Tina Turner was a powerful singer, but she alone could not justify this album.

Never listened. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Not for me - It starts off OK but not particularly interesting. I Can't Stand The Rain is alright and then it's just pretty bland until the end. Even the Beatles cover can't save it.

Tina Turner clearly has a lot of talent as a singer and performer, but this music just sounded so dated I couldn't get past that. That and the relentless shouting made it a slog to get through.

I really respect this album and Tina but this wasn't for me. From a certain time and place that is clearly not for a person like me. Still probably deseves it's spot on a list like this which isn't something I can say for everything on here. 4/10

Me gustó

This poor band sounds so bored. There was what, 4 covers on this? None of them can stand up to the original.

Funny one, this. It's unmistakeably Tina Turner, and it's also unmistakeably mid-80s. She has got a terrific voice, but I've never been a big fan either - and the two covers I specifically recognise, Let's Stay Together and Help, are just plain weird. While I'm not a fan of recording covers that are identical to the original, I don't like these arrangements at all. Won't be bothering to listen again.

A bunch of covers! She has a great voice but it felt uninspired, perfectly mid/dull. 2.5 rounding to 2

Not gonna deny her vocal talents, this is just very much not my thing.

the 80s were not a good time for rnb, to say the least. you had Prince and Michael, but things definitely trended towards the safe and dull. i don't intrinsically dislike it. but the deck is stacked against it. it has to either excel at songwriting and performance to break past the crude plastic sheen, or embrace it in cutting edge ways. this doesn't do either really. Tina Turner's heavy voice does not pair well with the production at all. deserves to be one of the 1001?

Tina has a great voice, that's undeniable but I just can't get into this album. The production is just flat 80s overcompressed, and the arrangements are just a bit bland for me. Shes done better stuff than this, unsure why this one was picked!

I mean there's a reason you don't see this album in online music discourses

if this was released in any other decade I think I would've loved this, but the 80s make this album sound like it was edited with star wipes and written in comic sans. Her voice is a 5/5 but the music accompanying her brings this down to a 2. Oh ya, and those 80s sax solos can F right off.

The best part about this album is definitely Turner's vocal performances, which are powerful to say the least. While a couple songs were enjoyable, this was largely unmemorable, and some of the instrumentals were honestly unpleasant to listen to (e.g. I Can't Stand The Rain... what is with those horn blasts?). Maybe this just isn't meant for me. Favorites: Private Dancer, Better Be Good to Me

Much respect to Tina and that powerhouse of a voice, but the 80s production and sound is not my cup of tea to say the least. An incredible singer singing along to what sounds like midi backing tracks.

Has some great songs but incredibly dated and overdone 80s production brings down the album significantly.

Ehh I didn't really enjoy this one. I like Tina, but this is dripping with those '80's synths I really despise. I can't explain it better than that.

So 80s sounding, I can enjoy this but only in small doses

I Might Have Been Queen (Soul Survivor) - 3.5/5 What's Love Got to Do With It - 4/5 Show Some Respect - 2.5/5 I Can't Stand the Rain - 2/5 Better Be Good to Me - 2/5 Let's Stay Together - 2.5/5 1984 - 2.5/5 Steel Claw - 2.5/5 Private Dancer - 2.5/5 Tina Turner has an incredible voice. Unfortunately, that's not the only instrument on this album, since the rest of the production feels stuck in the 80's and in a bad way. This probably could have been a bit more well-received when it came out, but 40 years later it's really dated. Overall: 2/5 Favorites: What's Love Got to Do With It

Not really a Tina fan tbh

Steel Claw has the absolute worst guitar solos ever recorded. It sounded like a cat dying. Tina is a phenomenal talent but this album is such a product of the 80’s it doesn’t have a timeless feel. It wears it 80’s ness like a boat anchor.

Her singing was great, but everything else was a kind of bad. It might just due to how old the album is, mixing wasn't exactly great in a lot of 80s albums.

not really my style but i respect tina turner

Hard not to like Tina. Unfortunately this album feels like a relic from a lost decade.

I didn’t listen to the whole album as I got a little disinterested a couple of songs in, however the woman is an icon so was probably an issue with my mood at the time

I like her cat

I liked the funk and disco and occasional rock to this album but ultimately it wasn’t for me.

25 song album… damn it's fun.. shes a party girl she can really sing but i think 80s music is hit or miss with me

This isn't necessarily my type of music, and I have a bit of an issue with performers who don't participate in the writing of the music they're performing. This is essentially a glorified covers album. Tina can sing, and the band can play. I don't love it though.

Not crazy about this one!

Not my thing. Gave up on it.

No thoughts. It was fine. I can't name you a single song and I didn't particularly enjoy the album. There's no experimentation in any of the instrumentation. It's almost like it was made to highlight her voice which is very powerful but I didn't care about any of the lyrics either. The most this album has going for it is the cat on the cover. High 2/Low 3

One man enter, one man with a slight headache leave.

Listening session: january 18th, while going for a walk Listened to before: not really, but heard two songs before Thoughts: the fact that I only listened to the original tracklist and not to the entire 30th anniversary version on Spotify says enough Favourite track: Private Dancer

whatever

Not my bag. Sorry!

sympathique jsp quoi dire d’autre le rer e affecte mes écoutes je suis pas dans un bon mood désolée tina

The 80s seem to consistently be my least favorite decade when it comes to more mainstream art, and this is no exception in the slightest. Tina Turner has a great voice and I could listen to her sing all day, but there’s so much grating 80s pop background that I started to get a headache.

Highlights: What's Love Got To Do With It, I Can't Stand The Rain. In a nutshell: comeback queen. Well, it shows its age by way of synth. Some songs I didn't mind, others I wasn't digging because of said synth use. Also, the title track was written by Mark Knopfler(?!). The band not recording the song and having Tina pick it up gives the track a different meaning. Overall: 4/10

veery 80's. the first track was pretty banger, but then the next couple of tracks were very lowkey. idk tbh i don't really care for her voice,, also there were several songs on the album that were just covers so idrk,, i'd probably rather just listen to the originals

Pretty solid. I like her voice. Decent combo of soulful and also “smoky” if that makes sense. I remember What’s Love Got to do with It being a much more upbeat song, felt slower when I’m actually listening to it. We thoroughly establish what a Private Dancer is in this album! Some good songs but overall not for me.

The songs and Tina Turner's voice are somewhere around four or five stars in quality. However, the backing "music" is awful, really bad, so terrible that it's hard to believe anyone signed this off. But then this was the mid-80s I guess, where tinny drum machines, Casio keyboard beeps/ boops/ stabs, "dreamy" saxophone, and "squeaky" guitar were the norm. My listening experience was tainted by the thought of session musicians wearing baggy pastel-coloured sports jackets, with their sleeves rolled up to their elbows, while they performed their crimes against music. I wonder if there might be a way to extract Tina's performance from this and add in a proper backing band, rather than this atrocity against music? Sadly, the final score needs to reflect the lack of artistry in the music, and I feel two stars is fair.

2/5. My take on this one is pretty simple. An amazing vocalist kneecapped by awful and cheesy 80’s pop production. Also none of the covers really stood out to me as particularly interesting or transformative.

Powerful and passionate vocals by Tina Turner! The album was long and at some point, bled together but still an incredible collection of 80s music.

Very much of its time. And quite relentless. Less of an album and more of procession of potential hits. And lots of covers.

I probably would have rated this differently in the 80s, but it is so hopelessly 80s that I wasn’t into it

I think I liked maybe 2 songs. Just not my style of music. Tina Turner is a phenomenal entertainer and a legend, but this album just isn't my style.

Private dancer and Better be good to me were surprise highlights on an album that seemed dated in production style on many songs. Also a surprising number of covers and all of them weren't as good as the original.

Some great moments

Oh god, the first 10 seconds made me want to vomit. Does will be tough. Got a bit better. The production is so vile, dull, and lifeless. Gets a bit more tolerable as it goes, or maybe it just worse me down. Those wacky 80s sounds. 2.5 rounded down Heard before? Some Owned: Yes: 41/164 (25%) Will I get? No`

Didn’t get halfway through, but it just reminds me of 2021. I don’t know what I think about her voice.

Dated but “what’s love got to do with it” is a banger

Einmal die 80 mit extra 80er bitte. Sehr repetitiv. Stimme in Singlelänge ertragbar, auf Albumlänge fragwürdiges Vergnügen.

whiny and lowkey creepy

I actually saw her in concert for this album in 1984 as a 7 year old kid :) No doubt that her voice is amazing, but this kind of 80's cheese isn't my jam in 2026. I'll go with a 2 star overall

I guess I'm glad this album was such a huge hit for her because she deserved some good after putting up with Ike, but holy shit this is unlistenable. In addition to the ruinous cover of "I Can't Stand The Rain" (such a kick-ass song in its original form), there is a brutally-awful cover of "Let's Stay Together". The only redeeming quality of that one is there's a cool, jazz-soaked synth solo that could have been lifted right out of a Yellowjackets tune. The highlight of the album is "Steel Claw". It's a lot closer to being a solid rock song, and it has a guitar solo that was bizarre in some cool ways. I looked it up and it turns out it was Jeff Beck, so that checks out. Any interest in listening to this version of "Help!" is best compared to whatever might motivate someone to watch "The Human Centipede." Tina Turner's vocals are fantastic. That's the only thing that saves this from being 1 star. It's probably 1.5 stars, that I'll round up to 2.

I had to do a double take when I saw this one. For whatever reason I thought Anita Baker had somehow managed to squeeze out a second book entry. I'm not sure what vibes I'm getting from this cover. It looks like something dance-adjacent. Is this going to be a synthpop album? Hey, I wasn't completely wrong. I'm not too big on this album, truth be told. I didn't like how the rock and electronic styles were blended here, and the production is super dated/stale, too. Tina's vocals are a bit of a mixed bag. For all the good moments she has there are just as many where she rubs me the wrong way. If there's any saving grace, it's that 39-minute runtime. While this wasn't my thing, I'm very glad that it didn't overstay it's welcome. I've heard "What's Love Got to Do With It" before, but only in those shitty mashup songs which plague the radio stations. It's strange hearing that chorus in a more relaxed soundscape. Anyways, the tune is decent. Perhaps a little threadbare at some points, but Tina's vocals are solid and more than make up for said weakness. Book time. Revitalised Turner's career. Performed very well on the charts. Won four grammies. Three very successful singles. Turner seems like a noteworthy figure in music history, so I'm favourable to this pick. I cosign this inclusion.

Surprisingly credible pop record, but with some terrible choices too. I was really surprised by the nature production - it's much rockier than I expected and kind of like some of the mj records but a little clearer and more modern in parts. Can't stand the rain is a really nice version of a great song. Unfortunately there is too much here that really doesn't work for me. Private dancer feels like a parody number. I respect the subject matter and how it might be meaningful for Tina, but the production feels dated and lines like "American express would be fine thank you" feel like bad jokes. Help and let's stay together don't land for me either - I respect a stylised cover in general but these feel like they ruin some my favourite elements of these songs. The b side of this record just doesn't really work for me.

GOING IN: No strong feelings LISTENED WHILE: With a cuppa FAMILIARITY: Know a few songs SKIP RATE: Played it straight through REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Bit disappointing BODY'S VERDICT: Full wiggle FAVOURITE TRACK: I Can't Stand the Rain My Rating: 2 The album was ruined by cheesy 80s musicians/production. The 80s ruined everyone. Fucking synthesisers. I'd love to hear someone take Tina's vocals and put them on something more suitable.

just alright. VERY 80s. She has a very impressive voice but it’s not quite for me. Nothing i listened to stood out particularly.

This was fine, but not really for me. Very 80's though.

I think Tina Turner was a remarkable performer but struggled to make it through this album. I didn't love the instruments and her voice started to grate on me. I'm sure this was a landmark album when it came out that hasn't stood the test of time.

Not a big fan of old Tina Turner, I’m sorry. WLGTDWI is great, a classic, but I didn’t care enough for her raspy voice to appreciate the rest.

Tina Turner embodies the Adult Contemporary category.

This ain’t it

While "Private Dancer" is a great song, the rest of the album is a bit too "80s" for my taste. Vocally Tina Turner surely delivers, but the production is quite dated. Oh, and about those covers, while Al Green and Bowie covers are somewhat manageable (though still questionable), the Beatles cover was a big "nope" from me.

Good in it's time I'm sure, but just not for me

Never been a fan of Tina Turner, or her voice. Listening to this album only solidified that opinion.

A half decent collection of singles and cover versions. Tina Turner was a dynamic live performer but this album was rubbish.

I really don't think this is a good album. I usually appreciate good production value. But this seemed over produced to the point that it feels sterile, clinical. Which is too bad as Tina Turner really has a cool voice. There are several hits here. The highlights for me were "Private Dancer" (lyrically, it's such a sad topic) and the cover of "I Can’t Stand The Rain" (Turner really captures the emotion here). The low point for me was the cover of the Beatles' "Help". The arrangement was just too far from the original.

this could have been a good album but it's just murdered by awful production. the cover of I Can't Stand the Rain is such a lifeless, pale imitation of the original, and is immediately followed by the frankly grating title track, killing any positive feelings i initially had towards it. there are some decent performances here, but the production is just dreadful and I don't even think tina turner herself is turning in a particularly good vocal performance. glimmers of greatness drowned under waves of mediocrity

When this was massive back in the 80’s I was in my early teens and didn’t care much for her music at all, but I do remember it…I remember my dad saying that with those legs she couldn’t stop a pig in an alley way and he was probably right! If the day ever comes and I have Grandchildren and they ask me what the 80’s sounded like I will play them this record. There is no denying her voice is very strong but it’s not for me and her cover of Help!…. Oh jeez, that’s bad!

A classic 80s album with attitude. Tina sounds great, but not every song works. When it does, Private Dancer is really good. Too bad the 80s prod still bugs me too much to enjoy it fully.

Overproduced and overrated.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't hate this. I thought the songs were well put together, Turner's singing voice is obviously incredible and the vocals were pitch perfect. As my grandad would have said "She's got a pair of lungs on her". What I didn't like was how stripped back and basic the backing music sounded. This must have been intentional but it was oversimplified to the point that it sounded like some sort of old-school karaoke backing track. I also get tired of listening to this style of full throttle singing. Turner belts out everything full volume with little space for nuance. Its technically impressive but I just find the style overbearing. Then there is a final dishonourable mention of the terrible Beatles cover. Sorry, overall just not my thing.

Man, the ‘80s were goofy… that song “I Can’t Stand the Rain” has a dope synth track though, for real.

The best song here was written by David Bowie…

Lord no. She's a great singer, but everything else about this is dire, from the songwriting to the production and the bizarre choice of covers. +1 point for at least not containing the dreadful 'Simply the Best'. I guess that's something...

It was okay.

this was totally forgettable aside from the hits, but the hits are massive so

Decent vibe, not really my sort of thing though. Tina is trying too hard. Pack it in Tina. Plus, the absolute worst cover song ive heard in 'Help!' so annoyed that i couldn't skip it.

It sounds like all other pop albums in the 80s-90s era.

This sounds like a lot of the other 80s albums. I'm not particularly into it. The best song wasn't even on the original cut of the album (I Wrote A Letter). I didn't enjoy the Beatles cover.

Obviously amazing vocals, but feels like an album built around a couple hits and a lot of filler.

Only listened to half but I was suprised it was kind of boring

A lot of meh. The Al Green cover is not very good. Steel Claw reminds of the best of Tina Turner. Help! is hot garbage.

Too eighties, even for the eighties. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

I finished listening to this crap, looked down and found out I was wearing a single dangly cross earring, white slip-ons with no shoes, a snug fitting t-shirt and a shiny sports jacket with the sleeves pushed halfway up my arms, and somehow my greying hair had been transformed into a luxuriant bouffant with platinum blonde highlights swept through it.

I've never been a fan of her or her voice. She sounds like my grandma who was a life long smoker. I'm impressed with the musicianship and writing, but those are things she had nothing to do with.

cool woman, unexciting music

I don't know... she has a great voice, but it just seems like he is screaming all the time. Cover songs sound dated...
