She's So Unusual
Cyndi LauperI liked this more than I would have thought. I only knew the singles but the rest was surprisingly solid. It peters out a little towards the end. I prefer princes version of when you were mine. I give 3/5.

Not for me. I didn’t like it in the 90s but legitimately gave it another shot. I’ll give it a start for creating this vibe of music but it sure did inspire a lot of really terrible music in its wake. This album makes me uncomfortable, much like the kids who listened it in my junior high.
I came into this only knowing We Are Family which is perhaps its curse. There were some really great disco grooves but it always left me wanting more. At its best it still felt like wedding music. It’s like the yacht rock of disco, yacht disco? It’s really a 3.5/5 and I can’t round up because I’ve assigned 4 stars to meaning I’m going out of my way to listen again later and this doesn’t quite break through.
Solid, would listen to again
I listened to this when it came out and preferred their previous albums. I came in open minded to see if some time changed my opinion, but it didn’t. There are some high highs but I often found myself just waiting for the next good song.
I was only familiar with the greatest hits from this album, but the rest was pretty good to you. I’ll probably wouldn’t put this on independently, but I wouldn’t object if somebody else suggested it.
Since starting this project, this was the first artist and album I hadn’t heard of. I wish it had stayed that way. There wasn’t much I could find enjoyable. I was ready for it to end and I had no appetite to give it another try.
I very much enjoyed the blusey tracks. There were a few skippers but overall quite good.
I had never heard of this artis before and I very much enjoyed it. Interesting trivia was he was married to Miriam Makeba. This was a long album so I need to listen more but 4 stars because I can’t wait to listen again.

Wow this takes me back to a certain time and place. That time is middle school and that place is Mikey's bedroom, playing SNES Mario Kart and listening to the Fugee's CD he stole from his older sister. I don't think I've heard it since then. Upon re-listen its still quite good, maybe even better than I remember, which makes me wonder why I don't ever just happen upon it. But I also realize I'm unlikely to keep playing it after today. Perhaps its doomed to be stuck in the mid-90s...
I struggle with how to rate this album. I don’t love it but it’s probably worth including something from this phase of his career and I guess this would be the one? I can’t help but to suspect that people’s obsession with his cover of “Hurt” has propelled this album further than it otherwise deserves.
If you haven't heard Tom Waits before, this might be a tough listen. It took me a few tries over a few years to soften to this sound but once you settle into its uneasiness you can get lost in the world he creates. If you're curious but not sold, try Rain Dogs and come back. 4.5/5 well actually 4.6/5 so I can round up. You probably won't listen on repeat but definitely worth a listen, (and come back periodically to re-visit) it's worth the effort.)
Snoop is one of the best of all time. Great Gfunk vibes. The skits and interludes are stale and some of the content is cringey but the overall a fun listen.
I love this album. It has some of the energy and attitude of punk but without the music or over simplicity and sloppiness. Great from start to finish.
I didn't love this. I would occasionally find myself getting lost in a groove but then the vocals would distract me. I can't see myself dancing to this or it playing in a bar/restaurant or even seeing this live.
Ugh, this was a chore to finish. Bad 80s synth and covers, I didn’t even like the Bowie collaboration.
I know how important people think this album is and at time I can get lost in the sound. Its a little slow and repetitive and some of the songs could be shorter or would benefit from changes in tempo.
I got a speeding ticket on the way to work and another one on the way home while listening to this album. I loved this as a teenager and it is still fun to listen to now. High energy, you can feel the rage. The guitars are amazing. I rate this album 5 middle fingers.
I had some friends in college that were obsessed with this album but he just doesn't do it for me. I clearly hear the emotion that he is feeling but I guess since my heart can't comprehend that emotion my ears can't enjoy his delivery
Great voice, some really wonderful tunes, I'm not sure how this guy didn't really make it on my radar. Contemporaries of Sam Cooke and Ray Charles I guess, as he referenced them on "Can't Nobody Love You" but doesn't seem to have the same recognition. That should change.
I knew the band and the singles but had never listened to this album. It has a cohesive sound and felt like I was in a bayou.
Solid live album. “Oh baby I love your way” cost it at least 0.5 stars.
This album was alright but I’m not sure it is listworthy.
The highs are very high. A little inconsistent but overall definitely worth a listen.
Rockin! Enjoyed this way more than expected. The sound quality is a little lacking but I understand this was 1981. You have the feeling of being there an the speed and energy of the music is incredible.
I didn’t like this at first but it grew on me with a few listens. I probably won’t put this in heavy rotation but I would definitely come back to it at some point.
I have not historically been a fan of Clapton and his various projects but I'm older now and more patient with this project. For me, this album benefited from a few listens. It's a good blend of blues rock and psychedelia. I prefer "Sunshine of Your Love" in the context of this album way more than the classic rock radio stations of my childhood.
What can I say that hasn’t already be said. This is a great album start to finish. Even the less popular songs are great and fit well with the others. This album can be enjoyed in heavy rotation.
I know their more recent alumna but had never listened to this before. It’s alright I guess. Toward the end of the album I thought to myself, “that was pretty good,” while not realizing I was less than halfway finished. It really drags on. Perhaps if I was listening to this while dancing in France in 1997 I would have enjoyed it more.
Weird in a really enjoyable way for the most part. There are some songs in the middle that lose me but the highs are so fun I can listen to this album repetitively. 3.75/5
Sometimes it sounded like Orange Juice and I liked that. Other times the sounded like XTC and I liked that. Even sometimes they did the chucka-chucka-chucka guitar strumming like Chic and I really liked that. But unfortunately I didn’t like the rest. Perhaps I just couldn’t get over how bad the bands name is.
It took me a few lessons, but once I softened to the sound/noise I started to enjoy it
Solid
I’m surprised by this. I would consider myself an Elton John fan but I didn’t love this album aside from the tracks on his greatest hits. Bennie and the Jets is an all time great though.
14 songs in 29 minutes! Before I could formulate an opinion the album was over. All I know is I played air guitar and drums the whole time.
I enjoyed this on my first listen and planned on giving it 4 stars but I ended up listening to it another 4 or 5 times and enjoying it more each time. I think this Costello fellow might be on to something.
Probably good for what it is, just not my vibe.
Son of a preacher man is an all time great song but the rest of the album didn’t do it for me.
Pretty good from start to finish, nothing really bad or skippable. On one hand there is a cohesive spurs though out the album but on the other hand it an all be boiled down into the single’ “Highway to Hell.” That song is top tier and everything else just fails to reach it.
I struggled deciding between 4 and 5. There are a handful of excellent songs and the rest are good but not great. BUT the excellent songs are so excellent I think it pulls up the average enough to round up to 5. I knew he died young but only 22 years of age, wow.
