Never even heard of Fishbone before. After sitting through Freddie's Dead, I wish this were still the case. A sort of jam on Curtis Mayfield by technically competent but soulless musicians. Ma and Pa sounds like ska punk, but with tons of synths, and the same problems as above. What I will say for this is that it has no consistent genre. Goes from the above to metal to some sort of hideous Billy Ocean pop but punkier. This band never made it - Red Hot Chili Peppers did. I'm not sure either is a present I'd want, but I'd have liked to hear what Fishbone sound like without a producer who appears to actively hate them. While I hated the songs, the genre agnosticism kept this from being the worst chore (looking at you, The Eagles and Sade).

Started off a good soul/reggae vibe but soon caused ear blindness by sounding the same, tooooo long noise on every track.
I enjoyed this more than I was expecting. There are a lot of genres packed into this album spanning funk, ska, and some metal and new wave influences. The lyrics reflect a punk ethic and the music is energetic and joyous
An interesting mix of Reggae and rock influences that tries but misses the mark. Marred by overlong arrangements, dated synths, and questionable vocals.
Fantastic, great variety of songs, feels like a band at the top of their game.

Funk rock and funk metal are genres with the cards stacked against them. It's taking the cleanness out of funk and the edge out of rock/metal. Fishbone, in comparison to their contemporaries (RHCP, Faith No More, Sugar Ray), is slightly more successful in this regard, but it still comes out as being a bit of a wash. The ska-inflected bits are better than the others, but it still doesn't end up feeling sounding all that great.
I actually like this. It has a unique sound but it's upbeat and exciting. You go, Fishbone.
Dreadful. A mish-mash of styles, all done badly and not put together with any musical intelligence.
Like a mix of ska with rock and something almost psychedelic at times. Weird but fun.

Kinda boring
At times in this album, I'd be enjoying this band's creativity and managing to make some real music out of the chaos, such as with "Freddie's Dead" and "One Day". Then at other times this album just seemed set on grating my patience, like with "Deep Inside" and "Bonin' in the Boneyard". Overall I think I'm glad I listened to this, which is worth something.
Very dated sound, high energy but weak vocals, scattered approach.
Time has not been good to Fishbone. We didn't enjoy this much. 15 year old me in a mosh pit enjoyed it
The musical equivalent of a TV advert for a happy meal toy. Change is ok. But it would be hypocritical of me to try to list things I like about this album while maintaining the stance that it is *possible* to have a preference for certain kinds of music over others, and that you actually don't *have* to like everything just because someone spent precious time and money making it and possibly poured a bit of their soul into it. I mean, if I can accept the fact that not everyone loves pineapple and banana on pizza, I must be able to accept the fact that I'm not super into this album without feeling like I'm offending people.

I didn't dislike this album but I didn't really enjoy it. I do not think I need to listen to it again. I was familiar with zero of the songs.
Pretty funky, but nothing too memorable here.
Of course "Freddie's Dead" is a great cover. This rest over this album is fine, but I like The Reality of My Surroundings a whole lot better. Wrong album pick.
mix of ska, metal, punk, and funk.... the blend reminds me of Skankin Pickle a bit. I can see why this was such an influential band. Solid album.
Pretty cool blend of early ska, metal, and alternative funk. Not sure I’ll come back but it was a fun listen.

Not a band I’m familiar with and after listening to this I feel I’ve not been missing out much. A poor man’s Meatloaf, if there is such a thing it’s Fishbone. I realize I may have offended 2 sets of fans with that and for that I’m sorry.
Haven’t heard the group before and it’s a genre I normally like, but this was not my favorite album.
Such a tough one. I listened through multiple times convinced myself I loved several tracks. When I went back though only a couple really stuck. Freddie's dead was such a great progressive track for the late 80s

First song sounds like something that would be on guitar hero. Then we go into ska. Album has a bit of an identity crisis. Not bad but not really my cup of tea.

I’m pretty sure this album sucks to most people, and my memories listening to it were fantastic. Love this one!
On first impression, I thought they were Sublime. THEN I thought they were a better Sublime. I've really grown to like and appreciate these guys. I get Phish vibes in here too. They are a cool group overall- how have I not heard of them? Change, slow bus, and bonin' are my favorites.
Another new one to me. It's an eclectic mix of rock, soul, ska, and funk. Pretty fun. Maybe I'm just not in the mood, but it's not doing a huge amount for me, and feels like a plasticky mish-mash of things (which probably isn't fair to it). Recommended for fans of Sublime though, for sure. It might improve on future listens, but 3/5 for now.

bonin in the boneyard. contender for best named track we've come across yet. the ska bits are good too. the rest of it is well confusing.
This is an weird mix of rock and ska/reggae, but once you get used to it it's actually rather pleasant. It was unexpected, fun to listen to, and I ended up liking more than I expected.
Not my cup of tea but a couple of okay tunes.

Kelpo levy. Välillä vähän all over the place, mutta kitarointeja ja bassokuvioita ihan mielellään kuunteli ja tietty torvien töräyttelyä. Erityisesti Ma and Pa ska lämmitti (timomanterismi intended). Tämän lisäksi poimin albumikahluun soittolistalle Bonin' in the Boneyard, Subliminal Fascism ja Slow Bus Movin'. Lopun Changes oli miellyttävä akustisen kitaran tahdittama slovari rauhoittamaan muun levyn funkskahtavaa tunnelmaa.
Fuck me, what an assault on every one of my senses this is. I guess you aren't supposed to take it seriously, so I won't. A helter-skelter of magic, colour and bonin' in the boneyard. One of those 80s albums where they just threw everything at it and hoped for the best. Freddie's dead. Wild. Truth and Soul.
I don't really know what this, it's all the '80s in one album. I think it would take a good few listens for me to decide whether I actually like it or not.

My interest in this album lasted about 3 songs and then it didn’t really do anything for me. Toss up between a 2 and a 3.
Ei oikei herättänyt tuntemuksia. Pari ok biisiä, mutta ei puolustanut itseään tällä listalla.
Puhallinsoittimista plussaa ja ihan kivat kitarat monessa biisissä, mutta tosiaan vähän ruuhkaa nuottiviivastolla ajoittain. Jotenkin ei sitten kuitenkaan kovin mieleenpainuvaa settiä. Kolmonen ihan vaan torvien ansiosta.
Levyn kansikuvan perusteella pelkäsin toista Shamenia, mutta tämähän olikin rokkia! Aikamoinen vastakohta juuri aiemmin kuuntelemaani Virgin Suicides -levyyn. Ei kuitenkaan nouse omille soittolistoille. Ei oikein tuo funk-viba lämmitä, vaikka ska-maista reipasta torvien töräyttelyä kuuluikin siellä täällä.
Bags of musical talent and good energy. I like all of the musical influences and all the genres that they've mixed together but at times it feels like mixture doesn't quite work and it'sa bit disjointed as an album. Maybe a case of less is more. Enjoyed it and could imagine they'd be wicked live, but not an album I'd be desperate to revisit. 6/10
Was looking forward to this based on the 'funk-rock, ska' description of the band, but it never really go me going. It felt like it started fairly well but fell away. 2.5 round up.

really weird album. sounds like a bit of jazz, 60s and 70s pop and then a sprinkling of 80s rock as well. the singer has a flexible definition of sticking to one genre as well and it doesnt really work that well as a combination

The black ska band from the 80s that all the white ska bands from the 90s copied. Are we surprised? One of my favorite things about this whole 1001 albums thing is finding all the predecessors and progenitors. I like how *FUN* this album is. It's sassy, it's naughty, it's just some boys playing around on their trombones. It probably gets a 4.5 from me. 4 seems too low (I've really been tossing out 4s a little too easily), but 5 seems a bit too high. It's not as polished as it could be.

Call me Lloyd Dobbler cause we're about to get some truth and soul up in here. Funky, Punky and Ska tinged this is groovy as all get out.
There's some cool sounds here. Lord knows I love a good ska album. This was, overall, kind of flat unfortunately. I don't feel that the hard rock elements melded well with the other sounds on the album.

I have loved this band for a long time now, and the fact that they were around for the punk scene in the late 80's early 90's here in los angeles is amazing. great music, amazing band

Very nice
I really like funk and to a lesser extent ska, but the production on this is just off putting. The heavy metal guitar tone that keeps popping up just sucks and the horns sound processed and weird all over. Has some moments, but just not for me.

Interesting album bridging from the Grateful Dead into ska, punk, & other 90s jam bands. Not something I'll seek out again, though.
