Old ska? It sounds like the soundtrack to A Goofy Movie.
Never heard this and initially put off by the intensely late 80sness. But it's not all bad. Most of it is though. Question of Life is very reminiscent of the punk ska bands I would later love for a while from 99-00 or so. Deep Inside is terrible. Mighty Long Way is terrible. Sounds like the closing theme to one of those cheesy teen US sitcoms they'd stick on the schedule of a Saturday morning. Bonin in the Boneyard nicks the keyboard riff from 1999 and slaps the shit out of some poor bass all over it. Actually good. One Day gets a pass because of the message despite veering way too far over on the Chilli Peppers Wankometer, which has been twitching regularly throughout the record. Subliminal Fascism is thankfully only 90 seconds long. Slow Bus Movin is sadly 150 seconds long. I get that it's an angry piss take though so fair enough. Ghetto Soundwave, oh thank fuck, the horns are back. A jaunty song about American cops doing one of their favourite hobbies. Just one bad apple. Nice effect detuning the horns and guitars as the hope is dying. Props. So I think that's 3 good songs so far amongst the shite. Change is quite nice to finish off. Tempted by a 1 here but it probably just scrapes a 2 for the good songs.

Interesting album that’s a bit all over the place, not one I’ll rush back to,
Very little to like about this for me. Somehow both repetitive and disjointed.
There were too many sounds on this album. I think it’s cool that Fishbone could play so many styles of music well but I don’t think this flowed well as an album at all. Maybe more listens would lead this to grow on me, as the songs on their own are decent but it felt like a slog to get through for a 40 min album with the punk parts being my least favorite.
Two stars for the sheer balls to make something so ''weird''. Didn't really click with me though
Me ha parecido un peñazo total. Aburrido, una mezcla entre Ska-P y la orquesta Mondragón. Ha envejecido muy mal. No merece la pena. Dos estrellas y gracias.
It feels like too many of the tracks rely on you solely appreciating the energy/tempo, quirkiness or a deeper meaning attempted in the lyrics. Unfortunately too many of the songs, seem to only have that. I did appreciate Ma & Pa, Pouring Rain and Mighty Long Way as a bit more approachable and songs like Bonin' in the Boneyard have a bit more interesting musical energy. Still, too much of it I would skip through on a repeat listen.
Some people really get into this ska stuff, I'm not one of them.
Ett par spår som får godkänt. Resten var inte särskilt spännande.
Meh - not into funk-rock really - didn’t do it for me
I didn't really enjoy this. Funk rock was never a style I felt developed well.
They are talented, but it's a mix of Mexican music and classic rock so it's just a double whammy for me.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: No, I just found it meh. I get what kind of sound this is going for but I found the trumpets and backing elements for near enough all the songs really harsh on my ears and I couldn’t see what they added to each track Favourite song: Track 1 - Freddie’s Dead
Yeah, people in 1988 would love this.
Funk rock.Agradables, sin más.
1988. Bonin' in the Boneyard
Not for me.. sounds too much like a jam session.
Pretty horrible, hated most of this. Constipated metal funk, evidently the inspiration for many dreadful bands that followed. Obviously good musicians so just scrapes a 2. Boo
Random Ska and Rock mix
More annoying than pleasant. A majority of it sounds like Jimmy Buffet trying to lead a Ska Band.
What an earth was this.
Heb niet zoveel met deze vrolijkheid..
Heel gedateerd!
Oef, met moeite kon ik er nog 2 sterren van maken. Op een enkel nummer na was het best vervelend eigenlijk.
Het nummer bonin’ in the boneyard deed me m’n wenkbrauwen fronsen. Verder gebeurde er niet zoveel met me tijdens deze plaat.
A bit too all over the place for me. Some cool songs and great musicianship but completely lacks cohesion.
Man, this did not do it for me...It had moments where I wanted to like it, but I think the lesson here is that I don't like Ska; it just took songs and beats that I liked and made them more aggressive, less interesting, and less fun. I think it was good at what it did, but that is just not something that appeals to me.
Not a big fan. Mostly it just faded into the background and couldn't keep my attention.
I did not think I would like this that much 4 Freddie's dead got thriller vibes. Crazy fun album Ok it's kinda stupid 2

This is not worth anybody's time.
This album tries to do too many things - sound like too many things but it kind of falls short. It’s a pity - it feels like this band could have been a great one.
Meh
Fishbone is one of those groups that I really wanted to love. In 1988, this was a group that was very different from anything else I was taking in. Had a cool logo. Looked cool in band photos. Seemed to go hard. And man there's so much energy all over this thing. Talent for days. But just not connecting here.
Not my kind of music. There was a moment there where it was okay, somewhere in the middle of the second song.
Decent bass but ended up fucking me off
This probably sounded very fresh and new in '88 but has aged poorly under the weight of the funk rock and ska rock we're now overly familiar with.
punky, metally, funky ska. Whilst that sounds like a cool combo...... I found this whole album jarring
This is a mix of punk, ska, reggae and rock. It has some ok tracks, but overall it lacks cohesion and is a bit of a messy annoyance. 2/5.
Frenetic. Some interesting stuff, but not my jam.
When we went to Greece they served us the fish bone-in, with the head still on and the eyes looking at you and everything. Americans in the 21st century really are spoiled when it comes to how we acquire and eat our food. Kind of amazing how our consumption habits have evolved so quickly over the last century. Get your frozen chicken* nuggets and never have to think about where they came from, how that chicken lost its head and then its bones and got processed into something that... oh, why is that breading and pureed meat mush so yummy!? Get me a 10-piece! Hey, actually, Fishbone is kind of meat mush too. Bits of whatever genres they could find. The first few tracks had me thinking that it was pretty fun, but the middle of the album was more boring and tasteless than any chicken nugget. They recovered a bit at the end with weirdness and some nice social commentary.
This like a 10 year old when you ask what they want to be when they grow up: a doctor, a lawyer, a football star, the prime minister, a world class bowler, etc. You get it. When the 10 year old grows up, they learn that they need to focus their efforts on one profession, or at least one type. This album needs to grow up. Is it alternative, pre-ska, metal, reggae, rock, etc.? Are they like Metallica, No Doubt, or Jesse and the Rippers? Unfortunately, all of them a bit. Wikipedia calls it fusion. I call it immature. There are some enjoyable passages, but far too many misses.
Nothing special for me. 2/5
How is this on the list?
what the what? well constructed jazzy funk rock reggae that i will absolutely never listen to
svoldið mehh -- ekkert slæmt sko en
couldn't listen to the whole thing
not great, not complete crap but nothing memorable
Some of the songs were fun, but the record as a whole is all over the place. Definitely some neat ideas, though.
Didn't love this one. Only got half way through the album before I realized it just wasn't my taste
I thought a hard rock version of Freddie’s Dead wasn’t a bad idea. But as they jump around from one genre to the next it sounds too contrived, especially ska vs metal. I think I saw them on TV once, they were playing live at the social of a PGA tournament and the golf commentators raved about what a great party band they were. That sums it up for me. If I was at a friend’s wedding and in place of a band that could play everything from Bony M to Van Halen, these guys showed up, I’d say, cool. But I wouldn’t run out and buy their album.
I owned this album. It was an ok album. Life changing? Nah.
I can see how this might appeal to some, but it's not really doing it for me.
Not a fan of this one. Felt a too avant-garde 80s vibe, going for something unique. Respect the effort, just doesn't land for me.
The best of this album IMO: - Pouring Rain Sounds like each song belongs in a different album or band. Ska, blues, metal, reggae... I like diversity but it doesn't sound well in this album. It's like they don't know what their band is about. Weird album. 1.7/5
Its OK, asides from a few songs I don't think I'd relisten, it's just not for me
Am told that Fishbone had been known as a ska band and that they were venturing into harder and "more serious" rock. I didn't love this venturing. I mostly liked the ska parts. I really prefer the Curtis Mayflield version of "Freddie's Dead," (although as I often notice, I like Fishbone's better the more times I hear it). The album really moves around the styles, meaning it's hard to get a sense of who Fishbone is supposed to be, and none is really a favorite style of mine, meaning it's hard to want to hear more. But I don't disagree with it being in this list. Definitely interesting things happen. I liked "Slow Bus Movin'" and "Change" the most. The latter song really doesn't sound like anything else on the album, though.
As it turns out, I apparently prefer their later material. This didn't really work for me at all, bar a few fun numbers.
Don’t have too strong opinions on this album. It had a variety of styles throughout and went by pretty quick. However it never really intrigued me. 4.1/10
Muy mnie
Funk rock.Agradables, sin más.
Wasn't into tbh
Naaaaaah
Never even heard of Fishbone before. After sitting through Freddie's Dead, I wish this were still the case. A sort of jam on Curtis Mayfield by technically competent but soulless musicians. Ma and Pa sounds like ska punk, but with tons of synths, and the same problems as above. What I will say for this is that it has no consistent genre. Goes from the above to metal to some sort of hideous Billy Ocean pop but punkier. This band never made it - Red Hot Chili Peppers did. I'm not sure either is a present I'd want, but I'd have liked to hear what Fishbone sound like without a producer who appears to actively hate them. While I hated the songs, the genre agnosticism kept this from being the worst chore (looking at you, The Eagles and Sade).
Funk rock and funk metal are genres with the cards stacked against them. It's taking the cleanness out of funk and the edge out of rock/metal. Fishbone, in comparison to their contemporaries (RHCP, Faith No More, Sugar Ray), is slightly more successful in this regard, but it still comes out as being a bit of a wash. The ska-inflected bits are better than the others, but it still doesn't end up feeling sounding all that great.
It's obvious these guys can do anything but I found the genre jumping to be annoying Ma and pa is good
I'm sure I've heard something from Fishbone before, but I could not tell you what. I want to like Fishbone, but I don't think I do.
Kinda boring
Very dated sound, high energy but weak vocals, scattered approach.
Didn’t enjoy.
Not for me
average
meh, got bored listening to this one
Pretty funky, but nothing too memorable here.
Haven’t heard the group before and it’s a genre I normally like, but this was not my favorite album.
Not my cup of tea but a couple of okay tunes.
aikamoisia nää jankutukset jenkkilästä (?)...
Don’t really know what to make of this one. Kinda liked it, kinda didn’t. Some Prince vibes at times
Just not a fan.
Ei oikei herättänyt tuntemuksia. Pari ok biisiä, mutta ei puolustanut itseään tällä listalla.
Nah, not for me really.
not my favorite kind of music
really weird album. sounds like a bit of jazz, 60s and 70s pop and then a sprinkling of 80s rock as well. the singer has a flexible definition of sticking to one genre as well and it doesnt really work that well as a combination
I now have a greater understanding as to why Theon Greyjoy hated that hornblower. 4/10
Not my tempo

Okay in parts. Not really my things.
not for me.
80’er rock, nice vokal, melodisk, reggae-vibes
The album offers a wide range of genres, including punk, ska, reggae, soul, funk, and blues. There’s even some heavy metal thrown in. Why all of that on a single record? I have no idea. It’s not my thing at all.
ummmmmm love the black panthers shout out? but this is just not for me..... lol...
most songs nor for me
Awful, just awful. I think it's some of the worst music I have ever heard.
I really disliked this It doesn’t have any coherence so comes across as a mess. I didn’t mind some of the songs, but as an album it’s a mess.
trash
Gleich, langweilig kein Lied hat wiedererkennungs Merkmal
did not listened, sorry to this album
Weird.
INCREDIBLY AWFUL. Almost impressive how bad this is.
At least it's not Robbie Williams
too many genres
I recognize the name/cover from the record shop in Falkirk, i must have confused it with Fish or Marillion or something because I was not expecting safe tame ska. Too slow and low, to an almost frustrating degree.… … Right, I’ll leave the above as I learn all too deep into this 1000+ album list not to make sweeping statements about an album without fully listening to it in full. Overall, they remind me of a band wedding band who take requests and say…don’t know that one but here’s one of our own that’s vaguely that genre and proceed to thoroughly undersrwelm. The slow stuff was too slow/too low. The faster stuff wasn’t spiky enough And I can imagine the anthems stuff going down like a lead balloon ‘Come on guys gets the lighters out and sing along’ *silence*
random songs with very different feel none of which were overly enjoyful
It's like an album assembled entirely from the annoying parts of albums I actually like.
Old school rap. Still rap. Pass.
Oh great, American funk rock. At least the first track is Curtis Mayfield, even if it's a pointless derivative cover that makes you long for the original. I'm apprehensive about getting to their own material... My one hope is that it may be akin to Frank Zappa which is the most hopeful I can be in terms of influence / sound on here. Track 2... Jeezus what the fuck? Sounds like some kids at school pissing around, with lyrics to suit a 15 year old. Right best get busy and just suffer what might be the most perfect horror to beset my ears in this project (sweats). Being fair Pouring Rain is much better, cutting bank on the wank rock to actually let a song breathe and the singer to actually emote. There's some actually good production on this track. And then Deep Inside hits in all it's Guns n Roses to be horror making me want to wash out my ears, it's some of the most repulsive shit I've heard, the guy is just cramming in all the words with zero musicality. But thank god it's short. If only I could say the same for the rest of this horror show. I'm on a day off today, but I'm doing some work from home just so this can sink into the background more and be more tolerable. Jeez subliminal fascism just hit, please finish soon... it does, phew! I'm sure these guys are an important on the 90s funk rock scene, but that was one of the most foul smelling aberrations to behold music so there's no honour there!
When people talk about how over the top U2 or Hootie and the Blowfish are as bands, I never quite understood it. But as soon as I turned on Fishbone's Truth and Soul I immediately started to understand what those people must be talking about because this project is a bit much for myself. I am all for some over the top music, I mean come on I basically was raised on Hard Rock thanks to my dad, but this project just feel very corny in a lot of ways I can't stand. It also doesn't help this is a Ska Rock record and that genre as a whole can very much run itself thin with my tastebuds. This project has the energy of a hyped up camp counselor but doesn't have nearly enough charisma to keep me wanting to get to the next track. If anything this project felt like a burden to hear as I was adamantly waiting for this project to be over. I am sorry to all the Fishbone fans out there but this was cheesy as fuck and not in a "funny haha" enjoyable way but more in a "what the fuck was the author thinking here?" kind of way.

Awful
Rock en scha kan leuk zijn maar hier gaat dat helemaal mis ik vind deze album en niet leuk
Not my thing
my dad could like this(thin chance but he likes the ska music, maybe not this type though)
not for me
I really don't like this. There are elements in each of these songs that I generally enjoy, but everything all together just...doesn't work for me at all. Oof.
On a binge right now because I haven’t listened to a lot of music, so I’m probably biting out but aside from the closer, what the fuck was this album?
silly ska. good fun.
Think the only real enjoyment I got from it is novelty, the idea of listening to this more than once makes me a bit ill
fine
Was not really into this one. There was a ska song towards the beginning that was pretty good
Did not age well - this was probably revolutionary at the time but seems weak now
What is this? I have never heard of this band. A terrible 80s cock rock cover of Curtis Mayfield? what have I done to deserve this? Enjoying this more now that it's gone ska. But ultimately not my thing.
I swear this is the album they wrote for the Heathcliffe movie they didn't make (knockoff Garfield the Cat),
eh
Metal-ska!? Nej tack, jag undanber mig och fördömer detta å det grövsta
Efter den inledande slakten av Freddie's Dead är allt hopp ute.
Just not it man
These guys are the rock equivalent of Insane Clown Posse. There's entirely too much going on and it's just noisy. I can't put my finger on why but I was extremely put off by it.

The opening 'wacky wedding band' slaughtering of a stone-cold classic was enough for me to bail. Drivel.
Bloody awful.

This was an uncalled for assault on my ear drums
Meh
For being at the forefront of Ska/Punk, this one was pretty blah to me. To sterile and pretty lame. 1.5/5
There's a buffet restaurant near me where you can eat food from every country at the same time. People sit at a table eating poorly cooked curry in a rubbery Yorkshire pudding with a side of dry spaghetti bolognese. Its an abomination
Rambling directionless drek, blah. I saw The Selecter in concert, that’s Ska.
Sorry, man. I really don’t like this mess
Meh
like a fun but annoying ska tribute to RATM. 1
Holy fuck
Feels like a fish bone stuck in my throat. 1/5
A rough one. The only word that comes to mind is "cheesy." There have been other albums I haven't liked but could understand why they were included. This is not one of them.
Not my jam
from the name to the cover to the sound: oh no some of the worst music i've ever heard
I wish I had a fishbones wedged in both ear canals during that listen. The fusion of styles simply doesn't sound good. The songs are lousy and the singer is unremarkable. Shame on you curators. A pox on all your houses!
Not my vibe. bad. Cannot imagine listening and thinking, yes this is good.
I don’t want to be mean … but I keep coming back to the thought of “it’s like a drunk driver careening down a packed party street destroying every genre it touches.
p588. 1988. 1 star. Average American band with no tunes, cover versions and an annoying sound. Fuck no. Why is this on the list?
Absolutely not
it was going so well, until they pull a wildcard seemingly out of nowhere and it just doesn’t sit right with my constitution. i do fw ghetto soundwave and change though. those were pretty good.
i'm finding it difficult to explain how much i hate this. this album isn't an important step on the way to anything, it was a distraction in the wrong direction. we kept making good music despite everything fishbone has ever done. every single track on here made me so mad it was amusing, and that was the only reason i made it through it
1. dead - 1 2. pa - 1 3. life - 1 4. rain - 2 5. inzide - 1 6. uuay - 1 7. boneyard - 0 8. day - 0 9. zubliminal - 0 10. buz - 0 11. ghetto - 1 12. change - 1
Their cover of Freddie's Dead is a travesty. This is like a novelty band and it's an essential album? The fire alarm sound over mouth noises is making a bad cover worse. More ska. Something about this reminds me of The Birthday Party. Bonin' In the Boneyard is like a cross of Prince and James Brown and is the best song on the album, very funky. The more funk based tracks are better. Why are there so many socially conscious ska bands?
Funk Rock has such high potential but it’s almost always diluted with the most generic and passive songwriting ever
Nope
It was a rough day and I just couldn't get into it. However, I think this could be a drastic understatement and should revisit this album another time.
some cool bass lines i guess. i can see how this would sound really good to someone who’d never heard any other music before in their life.
horrible. some fine political messaging but it doesn't matter because i can't listen to that
Eh. I didn't manage to connect with this at all.
This was a singles only listen for me. One Day is a non-song and the fact it was released as a single amazes me. TAS is a truly unfortunate exploration of genres. Fun music genres are drained of life by the production choices very much of its time. The heavy guitars are totally misguided and really subtract from the tracks they are featured on. 0.6
Honestly, this is embarrassing. I can't imagine being the type of person who likes this, let alone makes it. It's not fun or funny, it's just cringe.
Quite annoying "Jazz-Rock"
No
I guess I’d say late 80s ska/funk/gross? No thank you.
Not for me. Some nice ideas but not my thing. Did not finish album.
it seemed to lack an inner soul or i guess any i could grab onto to like.
Make up your minds! Music goes in every direction and doesn’t do it well in any. Torture.
Too boring start
Really no
Trumpet Rock n Roll, with a synth organ and south African sounding vocals. Didn't appeal to me at all
Really nothing for me here
Never heard this album before, if I could turn back the clock I would like it to have stayed that way
This may be the yardstick of ‘albums that have aged terribly’, it sounds soooo 80s. Anyway, hair rock, slap bass, oddly fast thrash metal style drums in places, funk, reggae combo really hits the sweet spot of styles I don’t particularly like and even less so in combination it turns out. The obvs result is that I skipped through most songs as I found them incredibly irritating, guess that must be a 1 then. (Bring back the gangsta rap, all is forgiven!)
Nope
I hate Ska. Even the non-Ska songs just annoyed the hell out of me.
Funky fresh
This was a little too ska-adjacent for my tastes. The wide mix of musical styles comes off much more jarring than interesting. Definitely a wanky 80's album.
Couldn't get into it. Very scattered. 1/5
I couldn’t finish the album because I never liked this band
Woof. Reminded me of Tom Waits if he made ska, everything is trying to be cool and whimsical at the same time. Can't seem to land on any one genre, so they're doing a handful of genres pretty poorly. Opening track is a Curtis Mayfield cover, that's neat I guess. I struggled to find a favorite on here, this was a tough one. Nothing on wikipedia to suggest it has a legacy worth including here either. Axe it. Favorite tracks: Ghetto Soundwave. Album art: Well, it's a set of fish bones. A very faint cartoon fish skeleton, surrounded by a lot of blank black space, and the album/band titles are in bold bright colors. It's a bold cover, memorable. 1/5
GOD AWFUL
Yuck, ska punk.
This feels like a college group project, where everybody had their own uncompromising, differing opinion on what the assignment actually was. I have no idea who nominated this for the list, but I kind of never want to meet them. This was awful.
Eclectic rubbish
The members of Fishbone are obviously talented musicians. And there might be a great ska, rock or funk album hidden somewhere here - but definitely not a combination of those. I was physically angry at the album from start to finish. Apparently certain members were concerned with their image being to cartoonish prior to the release of this… And then they decided to release this?!
I'm genuinely surprised by how much I disliked this. Fishbone tries their hand at so many different genres and holy shit do they butcher them all. I might have liked this if it was more banal, but they somehow manage to fuck up like seven different genres, it's almost impressive. Almost. .5/5
Not for me. There were bits and pieces on some tracks that sounded pretty unique and inventive, but for the most part it was dreadful. I was leaning 2 but have to knock it down for the inclusion of a track called “Bonin’ In The Boneyard”
I hate this style of music.
Fishbone were always considered a bit of a laughing stock, at least in the UK. Can now understand why. 1*
Not a good album. Is Ma and Pa supposed to be serious or goofy? And this is one of this band's best songs? The production on this album yields a thin, trebly, and tinny sound. Of course, this is exactly what great funk bands go for - no bass, all snare. This doesn't work as funk or ska and the hard rock flourishes which were praised back in the day really don't amount to much.
Bloody racket mostly
Kinda white for a black band. Not my thing.
feels like Bosstones without the soul
This album is stupid. Funk and ska are stupid. I'm starting to question whether any of the 1000 albums are good.
Was toch altijd een 'naam', dat Fishbone, maar ik kan er niet eens 2 sterren van maken.
Zusammenhanglose Grütze. Nach dem völlig überflüssigen Tapping-Solo im ersten Song ausgemacht.
A very convincing case for why the mishmash of genres demonstrated by this album doesn't work.
It was so hard to make it through this album. Every song grates on my ears
Didn't enjoy this one
awful grunge
Dreadful. A mish-mash of styles, all done badly and not put together with any musical intelligence.
Terrible. Just terrible.
The musical equivalent of a TV advert for a happy meal toy. Change is ok. But it would be hypocritical of me to try to list things I like about this album while maintaining the stance that it is *possible* to have a preference for certain kinds of music over others, and that you actually don't *have* to like everything just because someone spent precious time and money making it and possibly poured a bit of their soul into it. I mean, if I can accept the fact that not everyone loves pineapple and banana on pizza, I must be able to accept the fact that I'm not super into this album without feeling like I'm offending people.
Didnt really click with me 1/5
This is pretty awful
Pumppumpumpumpum pumpumpumpumpödödötööödöö waiting for the one day. Odotan seuraavaa päivää.
Not sure how this made the list
Terrible. Is it a joke album and submission?
I really like funk and to a lesser extent ska, but the production on this is just off putting. The heavy metal guitar tone that keeps popping up just sucks and the horns sound processed and weird all over. Has some moments, but just not for me.
Melkoista sekamelskaa josta ei tunnu saavan mitään otetta. Ma and Pa oli ihan hyvä biisi.
