For the prog rock purists. Three tracks on the album, with the title track clocking over 18 minutes, is going to be a challenge for most casual listeners. But Yes make it worth the time spent with beautiful, classical, cohesive music throughout each track. Not a moment of the 18 minutes is wasted and it’s all fantastically performed.
best prog
I'm not really sure why this is here, it's pretty mediocre. Got bored about half way through, but nice instrumentals.
Not in the mood for this kind of prog rock, gets on my nerves very quickly. There might be other Yes albums that I prefer, though.

Vond Fragile nog wel goed te doen en met vlagen zelfs goed, maar dit was me toch iets te langdradig.
Na 30 seconden was het me al duidelijk dat ik echt een schijthekel heb aan dit soort gepingel en gepiel. Een fucking rock-opera is echt het slechtste idee ooit.

I feel the same way about this album as I do about just about all prog rock. It's kind of like watching a circus act or a magic show: The skill and talent is evident and impressive and I'm glad I saw it, but I don't ever need to see it again.

I’m not really a big fan of prog outside of Pink Floyd nor do I particularly like Jon Anderson’s voice. However the bass goes bwoom.
My preference for "prog rock that sounds like an elf wrote AND sings it" lies with Rush, but I can't deny that this album is good stuff. The practically nonsense lyricism isn't really my thing—when combined with the synths, shit gets real cheesy—but it takes a pretty clear backseat to the music anyway, and the music is spectacular. The more folk-y middle track lulls at times compared to the other two, but those tracks are strong enough to make up for it, the closing banger especially. it's literally my favorite album and every time I listen to it it's as exactly good as the first time.

Didn't really grab me.
Very far out and druggy
I'm not generally a huge fan of prog rock, but this is a fun album. It's a much happier and bouncier vibe than I'm used to from prog rock, which I generally associate with dour music. The last song really helped make the album for me 4/5

Imagine being young in the 60s/70s and discovering prog rock as it emerges. I think I would be a prog nerd then. But I can imagine I would also get pretty exhausted sometimes, because these guys (it always seems to be guys in this time period, Renaissance being an exception) are always trying to scare me with their intricate solos, quick chord changes and thick vocal harmonies. After listening to, like, a couple of prog rock albums, my theory is that a lot of it tries to throw all its darts haphazardly at once and in doing so, fails to hit the nail on its head. So now when I listen to prog stuff, I try to judge it not on how supernaturally virtuosic they all are and how mind-bendingly out of this world the arrangements are, but on whether it does that thing music is supposed to do, and has done since its inception in prehistoric times: communicate something meaningful to me, as a listener. This album is honestly a mix of shallow feeling storms and beautiful calm, shimmering lakes. So it lands in the middle. Also, is it just me, or does it sometimes sound like Freddie Mercury?
70s Progressive Rock to its fullest extent. Rhythmic and varied album that you may not fully comprehend after the first listen. I think Close To The Edge will grow on me.

Progmagi! 3/5 men längden på låtarna gör att det känns som potentialen att albumet växer efter fler lyssningar finns. Svårt att bestämma bästa låt i det här fallet, många höjdpunkter, Fantastisk gitarr i introt till Close To The Edge Mäktig orgel i del III i Close To The Edge, och övergången från det till gitarren i del IV, mmmmm... Även hela del IV, speciellt klimaxet i slutet när "I get up, I get down" basuneras ut. Hela And You and I väldigt vacker, speciellt del II, Eclipse. Siberian Khatru också bra, funkigt gitarrspelande, lite spretigare, nonsensiga texter. Albumomslaget 10/10!

Not really my kind of jam
Great instrumentals...however, just not my bag, baby. A song sounding like four different songs and lasting 8-18 minutes long are only good in a slim span of circumstances. I can understand whoever made this list being probably in their 40s or older and taking into account just great music making, but in terms of popularity in a good time of listening to music, the majority won't be my thing. Maybe one or two songs from each. Finding great full albums will be hard, only a seldom few are successful. 2of5 for me

Quick listen (3 songs, 37 minutes). Takes a moment to get rolling; eventually cuts a nice tack between traditional and modern pop/alt-rock.

listened to this many times before. prog rock classic, but not an album i'll find myself returning to frequently.
Think this could be a grower, certainly enjoyed it first time round and feel like there are layers to be discovered.

This one was definitely hard to wrap my head around and needed a second listen. Even as a fan of progressive metal I found Close to the Edge pretty overwhelming. It's easily enough material for two full rock albums pressed into one 18 minute song. The question of how good it is - outside of just being complex - is a different one. While I enjoy the different styles and experimentation, I am sort of missing a feeling of cohesiveness where the different styles and elements would point in the same direction. Another point of objection is the vocals, which are somewhat bland and don't feel like they do justice to the mind-boggling instrumentation. This turned out a difficult one to rate as well. I'd like to give a 4.5, but I'll round it down because the Simon & Garfunkel was sort of awkward.
An absolute masterpiece of progressive rock. Long-winded gorgeous songs with so many moving parts. It's not for everybody, but it is most definitely for me.

Just ok. Typical 'Yes' type of sound. Nothing stands out, however I could technical listen all day.

Ok after listening to an old Genesis album and now this, I really don't want to listen to any more classic prog rock for a while. I skipped around and eventually gave up after about 20 minutes of listening. All I can say is that it's an impressive set of music to compose, arrange, and play well, but it's also kind of boring and the lyrics didn't do much for me.

Supongo que el nivel de producción está muy pro y mas considerando la decada del disco. Pues a gusto, nada super monumental, pero sí me gustó. A ratos sí hay cosas muy wtf que se ve que son experimentos y no sé todos afortunados, pero bueno, es prog, el caso es experimentar y ser pro. Me gustaron sobre todo las 2 primeras canciones.
Der natürliche Feind des Punk, nicht so schlimm wie erwartet, aber auch nicht meine Kiste Bier, wenn die Rocker ihre Komplexe auf diese Art bearbeiten. Im Rückblick wirkt das ja einfach nur total verschroben und durchgeknallt, dafür gibts Punkte, vor allem wenn man dann auf Wikipedia liest, dass der Drummer nach dem Album die Band verlassen hat, weil „he became frustrated with the band’s happy, diatonic music and favoured more jazz-oriented and improvisational compositions“ . Orgel an manchen Stellen auch gut. Die lieben ihre Musik jedenfalls und das so seltsam mitzubekommen, ist doch auch mal schön.
Ich bin irgendwie zutiefst betroffen, dass es den Tod gibt und damit solcherlei Entdeckungen ganz unverschämt einschränkt sind; und doch bin ich auch von dieser Entdeckung zutiefst getröstet.
Habt ihr euch die ganz angehört? Schreckliche Angebermusik, oder? Vielleicht geb ich, aus reiner Anerkennung, dafür morgen früh nen Sonderpunkt. Vielleicht aber auch nicht. (Ok, did it)
This is it folks. One of the few moments where I can excitedly proclaim that the fans of a genre have made listening to something unpalatable. I have not touched prog rock, because prog rock has some of the douchiest shithead fan bases I have ever met. But this right here is an easy five, from the almost storytelling soundscapes to the beautiful use of old and new instrumentation. And the vocals have a great Glam/Folk Fusion sound that I love.

Excellent composition and technicality representation of Yes. Not their most popular music, but definitely an important album for their style. Since the songs are all long compositional suites, it's hard to single out highlights, but one of the sections of And You And I is a cool acoustic segment.

Pretty cool, need to check out "Fragile" album
Everyone gets their own solo, for better or worse. No denying the talent in this album, but a lot of the solos or jams were simple chords and not complex enough to draw me in. Somehow I wanted more and less of the songs. I hate to focus on the drummer but this album could of really gone that extra mile if they had focused on percussion as much as they did their leads. 2/5
Prog is not a four letter word. Embrace the dramatic power.
I am generally not a huge fan of Prog, and Yes is quintessential Prog. Always intricate song structures and impressive virtuosity but... emotionally it is completely technical for me. It's not what I go to for music.
impressive, but weird, and maybe not for me so far
This album is super important for what it is and also what it isn't. What it is is one of the most pure distillations of prog rock and rock's musical excesses (if not necessarily the chemical excesses). But its overwritten, ornate Baroqueness helped to inspire punk music as a reaction against this brand of complex-for-the-sake-of-complex tryhard bullshit. Prog and punk happen to be my two favorite subgenres, so this one is extra meaningful to me. Beloved for three perfect songs (out of a possible three, hah!), if not any semblance of brevity. One more thing before I hit submit: early on in the title track there is a happy, sweet guitar melody that could have been a lead on a Queen song. Much later the same motif returns as a more sinister and dissonant version with ugly-sounding harmonics from a ring modulator. It's fuckin sick and it demonstrates my favorite joke about prog rock. If you don't like what you're hearing, wait five minutes.

I've only ever listened to Fragile but damn did I love this one. The first track may have been 19min, but it did not feel like it at all. Great prog with a lot of fun influences. Favorite track: "Close to the Edge"
Now I understand why people aren't interested in prog. The shorter the tracks get, the better they are by far.

A lot funkier than I thought it would be but also very spiritual. Lots of good moments, but the songs are so long that I can't imagine returning to them. I feel like this was a good introduction to prog rock.
