More fretless bass than I remember, but the power of that album! Still sounds fresh (bass parts aside) today
I mean, it's one of the big four so it's legendary - brutal, fast, true thrashy thrash metal. Tom doesn't really sing as such a lot of the time, and the mix has something to be desired, but it's still a classic.

Hard to imagine that hip hop didn’t sound like this before A Tribe.
Cool use of sampling and mixing of languages
Classic songs but I still don’t like Richard Ashcroft’s voice to make me want to listen again
Great album - weird to think that this was a good 25 years before Bright Eyes!
Great mix of completely fresh and Beatles twists on other influences
Decent background music and some recognisable hits
Like an 80s Joni Mitchell. Glad to have listened although probably wouldn’t relisten.
Classic tunes and more and more appreciation for how good a song writer Elton was
One that I’m aware of - cello song being a classic. Lots of influence here on other artists which is fun
Classic
Banger
Interesting but probably wouldn’t listen again
Not my cup of tea
Of its time
Can hear a lot of ways that they influenced later artists. Interesting stuff!
Brilliant album
A classic for sure although pretty long!
What a voice, love the classic arrangements and sound
Great guitar, hear inspiration for bands like the mars volta
One of Zeppelin’s most complete albums - nothing that doesn’t still hold up as a classic
Proper music that
Some bangers on there and interesting to note the number of samples that other artists have used
Some iconic songs, but not huge amounts of variation IMO
Really enjoyed that!
Obviously got a banger on in sultans of swing, otherwise a good album
Cool vibe and some decent singles but feels very of it’s year
I remembered there being more energy in this album than this. Not quite blood sugar sex magic.
Classic!
Nuts but that’s Zappa right?
Early Rolling Stones is a hoot of different styles and influences. Fun, easy, not too full of itself
Outside of the singles, some good songs and energy but not quite the polish of the big start
Reminds me of my youth - although not necessarily in a good way
Classic as it gets. Love that the biggest songs are right at the end of the album, and it’s a real “I don’t care” in terms of structure, length et al.
Beautiful
Masterful

More fretless bass than I remember, but the power of that album! Still sounds fresh (bass parts aside) today
Well, hair cut is iconic and the influence is clear but I wouldn’t say it totally floated my boat
Could defo listen again, although the title track is perhaps a little overrated
More gritty than I was expecting. Great proto-Brit pop
Never realised how varied Alice Cooper’s sound was. What a kooky album
It’s a great debut and lots to admire, but didn’t make me want to binge listen
More proggy than I expected especially with the singles on it too.
Way not what I was expecting
Bit ponderous
Way not what I was expecting
Fine in the background but wasn’t revelatory
First song and thought it was a one star. But by the end of the album I loved it. Can hear inspiration that so many artists drew from OMD
Not the best SK album but still a big fan
Classic songs
Love this album - I was bought it when it came out. Many memories
DP at their best
Still sounds great today. Minor quibbles with the guitar tones but songwriting, performance and vibe are just legit
Objectively great, although it doesn’t make my rotation
Better than urban hymns
Doesn’t float my boat
No bad songs, great mix, mastery, flow - a very familiar album that I love
Old school
Guru has an iconic voice
Filthy beats, filthy lyrics. Good example of non violent gangster rap from the 90s but prefer lyrics that are more thoughtful
I forgot that 80s pop, especially Madonna, was so wildly different across the span of just one album.
Interesting but nothing really stood out.
I recognised the single and it floated on well enough
Very of it’s time, more Beatles than the bombastic rock I normally think of
Nearly 5 stars for me - very familiar and really like it but gets a wee bit samey in the back half
Lots of piano!
Nostalgic album and some great arrangement including strings by JPJ on nightswimming
The old school singer songwriter. Unobtrusive but lyrically challenging
Big fan of post-rock and this didn’t disappoint
Just not a big ABBA fan and couldn’t really hear what was different about this from other singles or albums.
There’s a reason why the title track is the one that is widely remembered. They never struck me as an album kind of band, more a live act with a few killer new songs every album or two. Their set list is just epic, but the track lists on albums feel like there’s a bit of filler.
Mean tones, a remarkable complexity in some of the songs I’ve not heard before, and the energy and snark of the singles flows through the whole album. Very impressed
Can hear the psychedelic genius in there although makes for uncomfortable listening to know how about his tragic story. Not my cup of tea per se either.
Takes me back
Odd for a concept album even for the Who. One of the few albums I struggled to make all the way through. FWIW, I thought QOTSA did the concept much better with songs for the deaf
More melancholy than I anticipated. Sad songs for a sad mood so I liked it but not normally a fan of BB. Wilco made it and preferred songs with him leading.
An education
Amazing box of frogs kind of album. I know ‘cult of’ well but rest of record was brand new. Hard to tell where the direction was though and style all over the place
Not fully appreciated TW’s output before. Musically really interesting and his voice is just incredible. To do that album in 1980 feels bold!
I am afraid I’m just not a fan of cabaret music. Technically very good I can hear, but just not my bag
Familiar songs, very early noughties Brit rock vibes, feels like a long album to me tho
Classic songs, although not much difference in arrangement meant I found myself getting a bit bored
Musically really interesting in places and Bobby’s voice is just amazing.
I’ve got history with this album. The Scientist is my breakup song and a lot of the rest of the album has personal resonance. That said, objectively? Solid songwriting, unobtrusive musicality, 4 decently interesting drum beats, and pre-indie dancefloor pursuit.
Iconic songs but can’t get past some grating issues
Yeah not too bad really. The title track is the obvious banger - long as it is. Rest of the album actually more folky and mellow which was pleasant enough given that Pie itself has that bluesy twang
Just soooooo long. Great music, super vibes and recording but just got a bit bored towards the end. Prefer something like Songs for the Deaf for that travel concept album
Great storytelling and there’s no doubt Eminem is a brilliant rapper but musically meh and it feels long and unfocused in places
Love this album. Perfect vibe.
Odd to hear zz still working out their sound - legendary songs at the end and a sense of their swaggering sound
Too long, unfocused
More melodic and musically varied than I remember and it’s no wonder the album transcended the punk label and got mainstream pickup
First dance at my wedding, nuff said. The man is a soul legend
Wasn’t expecting something quite so melancholy but still very much enjoyed and continue to hear the influence on generations of americana singer songwriters
Not feeling it even though it’s iconic
Bit samey and of it’s time but felt the emotional pull in the songs. RIP GM
He chats a lot huh?!? Born entertainer and despite the songs pretty much all sounding the same, a great live album with JC working the crowd
The melancholy in the album did that thing that melancholy can do - both absolutely connect with my mood and provide a distinctly uncomfortable externalisation of my mood. I really quite liked this album, but at the same time didn’t. Weird.
I really got into this - Skin is so badass and the arrangements were really cool in a way that I didn't expect. I remember the more mainstream stuff as being cool and all but this was way more interesting.
Amazing album but it actually frazzled my brain while listening.
Actually really enjoyed the album - slightly against expectations. Enjoyably wacky and for the most part didn't feel slow, overdone or samey
Of course there are the hits, and PF is a boss on guitar and vocals, but just didn’t connect with the concert as recorded. Maybe I was on an off day but probably wouldn’t listen again
Meh - Suedehead and Everyday is like aside, feels like a pastiche of the Smiths...
I am quite a slipknot fan but you really can hear the difference in their focus and individuality in subsequent albums, and while there are some great tracks that stand the test of time, some feel more like pastiches of other bands like Korn rather than Slipknot themselves.
It was OK - I didn't know any of the songs but enjoyed it enough to work through the whole album, but probably wouldn't listen again
My dad loved this album although I couldn't really get on with it as a kid. So it's got a weird hold in me
Jangle pop indeed. It sounds and feels an awful lot like the Smiths just without the caustic drip, swagger and morose lyricism of Morrissey and Johnny Marr's exceptional guitar work. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, and I know the Smiths from listening to a LOT of their albums, but I don't think I'd go back to the Go-Betweens
I didn't get into ANOHNI the first time around and it might be my mood that this album slots so neatly into, but I really liked this and the 35 minutes floated by.
That Motown sound is just incredible
Not normally a fan of 80s synth pop stuff but this grew on me through the album and wasn't at all obnoxious
Guitars sound sick! Enjoyed what is a bit of a bonkers album with some very jazzy and unusual sounds.
Such an amazing dirty tone on the guitars and even though some of the songs are long and repetitive I didn't ever feel bored while listening.
I'm beginning to love Neil Young and I can't explain why but it just fits so well like a comfy jacket that's the right size. Breezed through this album, felt a soft emotional pull here and there but nothing so uncomfortable I ever thought twice about stopping listening.
Fire!!!
Really quite odd, not in a bad way but yes very odd
It's a vibe
Interesting - but the songs are all pretty long!
Songs blend into each other. I don't mind them but didn't set my world on fire and not sure I quite tuned into Randy's voice well enough to capture the depth of the lyrics
It's like ear bleach - lovely vibes for the right mood.
Feels derivative compared to other bands like the Doors and other acid rock and psychedelic bands. The single is ponderous and actually preferred their other songs on the album
Some bangers but my gosh it felt like there was some filler
Uncomfortable listening given the slur in the first song - his social commentary on southern America just felt inconsistent to me given his later work on Toy Story et al
Pre Bruce era Maiden…
Tons of character and I quite liked it
I went through a hard bop phase so digging this.
Goes without saying - one of my favourite albums of all time and represents some of LZ's best ever music.
Many memories of when this was first released and driving around listening to it over a sunny summer
Breaking boundaries with this album by releasing on a pay what you like scheme. I didn't get into it at the time but listening back now very much enjoyed and hear the constistent evolution of the band and their music.
Early Garage.... I wasn't a fan then but I can appreciate the evolution from DnB and other dance music into it through this album
I remember getting this album originally and listening to the crap out of it. I'm not the biggest RHCP fan but the instrumentation is just so bloody good that it makes up for AK who I am not personally a big fan of.
Funky as hell and amazing that SW recorded so much of the album himself.
I'm just not that bigger fan of Hole - maybe I'm biased but just doesn't particularly do it for me.
Again a bit long and unfocused
Early 90s hip hop feels like it was more inspired by politically active 70s soul than previous generations of it's own genre. More a fan of this than what came after it, or the gangsta rap branch of the genre.
Detroit Rock City is legendary but the rest of the album was a bit meh.
Certainly hear how Roots influenced a ton of metal bands that came after them including the nu-metal wave. I'm a genre fan and I really dug this.
I mean, it's legendary stuff and pretty crazy to think that it's nearly 50 years old as it still gives off futuristic sound vibes.
I completely understand how influential this album is, but I wouldn't say I really *enjoyed* listening to it. Not horrible, and a vanguard for art-rock to come after it, but I think it takes a concerted effort to listen to this and just *get* that it's revolutionary for so many genres of music.
I knew it was a banger but didn't appreciate how many big singles and tracks were just on this album.
I mean c'mon - probably the best second album ever. Butch Vig's production is huge and everything about the album is so good. Guitars, vocals, drums, the mix, the sensitivity and aggression.
The Killing Moon is obviously iconic and the rest of the album slid along nicely.
Aptly named album - felt eerie and otherworldly. NC is just a boss about creating sounds that are gloriously unsettling.
Very samey album, and a couple of odd tracks such as Orgasmatron which sound so odd.
Some recognisable songs and clear grounding of a modern take on Tango. Really enjoyed it actually, perfect music for the background to energise me while working so a bit more situational music but good nonetheless.
Meh - not bad but not blowing me away.
I struggled to get into a groove with this album. I can objectively hear the influence this will have had on those that cite them, but I couldn't quite get on with it.
What a voice
Good grief - it's quite something.
Well, certainly the source material for the 80s revival pop trend from a few years ago! I didn't mind it although not quite my cup of tea
Meh - I've never really fully drunk the Elvis koolade.
Great singles, rest of the album felt long and unfocused in places
Can absolutely hear the inspiration for heavy metal legends but the actual production makes this a hard to listen to album and I'm surprised it's not been remastered so you can, y'know, actually hear the definition in the guitars, vocals, stuff like that.
Mixed bag - feels very of the time (like LZ and co) experimenting with different vibes and genres
The master Miles - really an all star line up and so cool and vibey to kickstart fusion jazz
Meh - bleurgh - not a good time for pop
I mean, it's fuggin' JJ. Just amazing voice. Quintessential early 70s RnB
A sleeper classic potentially - Bill's voice is brilliant
I can respect that by this point MJ was one of the biggest artists ever but it's just a bit load of meh to me
I mean, legendary middle section with title track and Run to the Hills, but great balance of thrashy metal songs alongside more melodic and mixed tempo stuff
Well that was gloriously, f***in' weird, although from reading about the Residents it sounds like the album is one of the most accessible ones. I've been a bit of a fan of avant-garde jazz before so this felt fun and enjoyably odd.
Very chilled background music
I liked a lot actually - wouldn't say I'm a particular fan of grime but very listenable and Skepta's definitely got a more main character rap style compared to some of the collaborators on some of the songs which I enjoyed less. 2014 passed me by in a tired haze of young children so nice to revisit and enjoy the album.
Another album of my youth - I went to see the Coral live too, and Dreaming of you was on my covers band's setlist for years so I'm just so familiar with this one... Like psychedelic indie rock heavily inspired by previous Liverpool groups ....
Meh - I know the singles and it's an interesting album I guess combining that early 90s dance, some rock stuff and elements of gospel and whatnot but I just didn't really enjoy it...
Interesting listening and hear the mutual influence on some other end of 60s and early 70s bands that I've listened to ... a lot....
Another seminal album from my adolescent years. Many hours listening to this album on repeat while playing one of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games or hanging out with friends.
Meh
I mean, it's one of the big four so it's legendary - brutal, fast, true thrashy thrash metal. Tom doesn't really sing as such a lot of the time, and the mix has something to be desired, but it's still a classic.
Good vibes for having on while working
Feels very 60s blues supergroup-ish - Steward, Wood, Page, JPJ and Beck plays so well and so expressively. It's no wonder JB is revered as a guitarists guitarist despite not having the same level of super stardom as LZ - who arguably borrowed so much of their sound for the first few albums from JB.
I have the DVD documentary, and the album when launched. Vibes man
Part of the soundtrack of my university days - for good or ill. It's a long old album and probably could be a couple of tracks shorter and more focused, but the singles still stand up IMO
All I can hear is the Divine Comedy - no bad thing and the lyrics are pretty spicy in places so interesting juxtaposition of style and substance.
Samples galore - but not something I'd listen back to again and again
Great harmonies, iconic songs and back when albums left you wanting a bit more with a short run time - but it also left me wanting a little more from the depth in the songs. Dunno, I enjoyed it just not *that* much.
JFC that album is loud. I read that Blue Cheer are proto-Heavy Metal but I don't hear it apart from just being really, really bloody loud. Hear lots of Jimi and contemporaries in that psychedelic rock space which was fun - but loud. Did I mention it was loud?
Interesting, quirky, not sure I really got into it but it floated along happily enough and could easily hear it in a hip coffee shop somewhere.
Ahh shoegaze... I am a bit of a fan even though all the songs are long and at times feel like it's unnecessarily so.
Actually really enjoyed this - long Afrobeats passages that blend together and make for really great background listening
I believe that's called soundscaping - flowed by while working and didn't mind it, and evokes some emotional resonance but can't say I'll be listening again and again
I'm a fan of Miles Davis' later work in hard bop rather that cool jazz, but hard to not see how brilliant and influential this was
Like this a lot
I really like this album, even though it's not like super brilliant, so I'm biased and as a result I've maybe marked it down compared to it's objective quality but I don't care to really rank this one and just enjoy it
I just can't deal with Fred....
John's voice is just spectacular - some iconic songs on there too
Brilliantly nuts, I sort of love Post Punk in some moods
I know it's iconic and Biggie was an incredible rapper, but I'm just not a big fan of 90s gangsta rap and couldn't listen to it all.
I know the hits but never really dug into AiC's full albums - really very good!
Just an amazing album and wild to think this was released in 1978 as it set the direction for music for a decade and more. The whole band are just something else
It feels very directed by a record company rather than the genuine direction of the band compared to the earlier albums - I guess that's born out in the commercial success but just not quite as fun as the early stuff.
Meh - I think Eminem is a great rapper but struggled to get into this album
I love this album
One or two songs felt like versions of more popular songs elsewhere in the catalogue but a great album
So very, very 60s. Thank God for those bands that pushed us beyond trite, inoffensive platitudes in sung poetry
OMG - I knew Thundercat was good but I'm embarrassed that I haven't listened to this until now! Amazing
Meh - long, pretty samey, I like metal genre but got a bit bored of this
Back when EDM felt like an artform and melded genres.
I remember it well - or so I thought. Actually remember the radio play for the singles and the hype around this being nu-grunge or whatever - the spirit of Nirvana - but not having the substance to really back that up. Doesn't feel like an album that has a thread, more the exciting promise of a style that came and went so quickly like many bands and genres during the early noughties
Less welcome soundtrack to my younger years, I like about four moments on the album - feels way too long for a pop album and a little too much 'new MJ' for the noughties. That bridge/hooky extra verse on Rock your body though - magnifique...
Always iconic, pushing boundaries, surprising that there was so much instrumental on the album!
Iconic - remember when Firestarter was released. Loved it then, love it now.
Interesting approach with some old samples et al but blimey that drags outside of the singles
I enjoyed that more than I thought
Interesting - I do like hearing the way other cultures interpret a genre
Legend - absolute bloody legend
Iconic
Really interesting to listen and hear the inspiration - the back end of the album got a bit odd though and I felt like I was listening to something completely different
Not unpleasant, not so weird that it was tough listening, neither felt wonderfully weird. Bit of a middle ground
Tried to get into this - I like AWB but felt just too jammy and unfocused for me to really enjoy it.
Fun and easy listening
Love the standout tracks and was out around the time I started learning guitar so they have a resonance for me - but the filler stuff is a bit samey tbh.
It's a vibe huh. Beautiful haunting vocals and instrumentation
Actually love a bit of Northern Soul and this feels somehow purer and more fun/alive than the super well known singles and work that came later.
