The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators

I find the bubbling of the electric jug distracting. Easy to see how these guys were influencial founders of the psychedelic rock scene.

Some Doors, some Jefferson Airplane... I had never heard of these guys but their influence on the late 60s is pretty obvious.

This album is so damn 60s. It's got that Mamas & Papas chord picking folk sound mixed with that Rolling Stones distorted blues vibes all rolled up into a frantic cyclonic trip.

As far aw psychadelic rock goes this is quite mild but not bad. Howeve the spund quality degrades the experience.

Normally I can dig classic garage rock, and I've been known to enjoy some psychedelic rock, but this combination of the two just did not click for me.

To be quite honest, I just wasn’t in the mood to listen to this. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but it just didn’t strike my fancy. So I only listened to a few songs before turning it off.

Weird, but never quite reaches high weirdness. It's all a bit normal-weird. More jug please. The mono recording seems better, actually, but the stereo track order has a monster of a closer.

Really cool psych surf garage gem from 1966, almost an entire year before the psychedelic era of rock was in full swing. The sound is here and the instrumentation is spot on, with some of the lyrical cadence reminding me a bit of Zappa’s first album from this year “Freak Out”. I would definitely consider this essential listening- glad I finally got to hear it beyond “You’re gonna miss me”. Go enjoy!

Crazy and weird but fun and rocks pretty hard. Twangy surf guitar, 60s ginger baker style overdrumming, and that electric jug thing adds a whole level of frenetic energy.

Classic weird psychedelic rock. Some of it rocks, some of it wallows, some of it is just plain strange. A favorite, for sure.

27th August 2021 Listened whilst getting ready for a weekend away camping with sav and Sally. Really enjoyed this, it has the 60s written all through it even to the point where you can hear the darker undertones to it as well.

Sounds like pretty basic psychedelic rock from the 60s.

Kinda felt meh. Interesting listen, but nothing really stood out. Sounded more like experimental surfer rock than psychedelic rock. More than likely will not be a repeat listen.

A very 60s album, and a good listen overall. Definitely a band who's discography I expect to listen to more. Forgot to record favorite/least favorite songs.

Fun listen. It wouldn't be on my must-play list, but I'd give it a spin on occasion.

Too loud

Well thecfirst song; You're gonna miss me is FANTASTIC. 2nd song way more psychedelic (I wonder what that burbling sound is...could be a guitar effect, maybe even a human voice...sounds cool though). Some great songs here and I love all the covers. It started out as a 3 star, especially the first song and Splash 1. By the ninth or tenth it was down to 2 🌟, then came 4 straight covers, all excellent. Back up to 3 stars and could get close to 4 with more listens. 3 🌟

Lyssningen genomfördes i bilen i samband med Davids flytt så fokus var kanske inte genomgående 100% på musiken. Men med det sagt så började den med att ge ett svagt intryck. Musiken kändes inte dålig per se, men mer tråkig kanske? Ju längre jag lyssnade desto bättre blev det dock, det var många fina små gitarr-riff som uppskattas. Det fanns även en del likheter med ett band jag håller väldigt högt, the Beatles. Bäst: "Fire engine"

It’s a pretty generic 60s album. Has its rock and psychedelic moments but there’s nothing that really stands out. It’s a long album and feels like it. Overall it’s meh. 5.1/10

I recognize that in 1966 this was wild. Sounds a few years early. The surf rock riff on a psych album blew my mind

The electric jug was cool for a couple of songs but gets a little irritating the more I hear it. Would of liked it more as an accent than warbling through entire songs.

I have never heard of the artist or any of the music. There was this strange wibble-wobble noise that found its way into the background of ¿half? of the tracks. I think I like some psychodelic music, but the first listen of this album came up with 2 stars.

Another album that's not bad but I don't understand why it's on this list

You can hear the influence of albums like this in all kinds of media when they're trying to communicate someone is on a drug trip. The sound is very big and messy, largely because of the heavy reverb. Also, there's a backing track throughout the album that I really don't like the sound of, it's a synth maybe? Hopping back and forth between notes like somebody messing with their zipper. Irked me.

Hear the Texas. Hear the the garage walls. Hear the ELECTRIC JUG. This album would still be good jugless, but with that chaotic, quadruple-timing whoop-whooper in the mix this thing goes next level. The entire album feels urgent, almost panicked, like a bad LSD trip. Like Roky had paranoid dreams of a twister about to touch down. The jug will save you, Roky. B+

A fun freak out album. Nice and garagey, psychedelic. Most prodigious use of the Brazilian thing that sounds like someone inhaling and exhaling fast—and at first it was charming then became annoying. I wonder if it’s supposed to be less prevalent on the mix and new headphones pick it up? I loved this album at first, then found it one note and almost annoying. 3

Have always thought this was good background music. Some high points, but it all blends together after a bit.

I like these guys - heard them for the first time years ago when watching that Foo Fighters documentary that tracked roots of music.

2.7 - Wanted to like this but the recording even after a remaster sounds grimy. No real standout tracks. To me there isn’t that much to distinguish this as a psychedelic record.

Early (Wikipedia says possibly the first) psychedelic rock music. It's certainly solid, but I feel like it's on the list more for historical significance than for being a great album.

I had a big psychedelic rock phase late in college/right after. The singles are good, the album mostly forgettable. Blends together.

Ni me di cuenta como iba pasando

Recordando un poco a Moby Grape, los Doors y a Hendrix como los puntos psicodélicos que han tocado hasta ahora creo a mi gusto este es el mejor. Tienen un punto muy interesante de psicodélico pero con un sonido mucho más crudo, con una guitarra que va más fuerte, una voz que puede dejarse llevar a gritar realmente con desaire y un botellón que extrañamente persiste durante todo el disco pero que, aunque pudiera llegar a ser cansado, da cierto sentido de taladrado en la cabeza y que simplemente tengo que aceptar, me da hasta gracia las agallas de dejarlo en el mismo ritmo canción tras canción. Las letras dentro de lo esperable en su imaginario lleno de LSD se me hacen mucho mejor escritas que por ejemplo cualquier cosa de Morrison, mucho más sinceras y aterrizadas. No llega a 5 porque aunque a mí se me hace simpatico creo que el botellón puede trabajar en su contra y porque no es tampoco un género que pueda escuchar una y otra vez; a pesar de eso se me hace de los mejores grupos (a pesar de que tienen creo solo 2 o 3 discos y duraron un par de años) en rock psicodélico, incluso a mi gusto pudiendo llegar casi saltándose un paso a ser también rock ácido.

La pura psicodelia de los 60s. Debo aceptar que los sonidos vocales en forma de instrumento (tucutucutú) son extraños al principio pero si te logras acostumbrar, quedan perfecto en el viaje de esta banda. Songs: Reverberation, Fire Engine, Monkey Island, Tried to hide

I like this album a lot. I have been into the psychedelic rock lately.

This feels so authentic to the era it’s paying homage to that i thought it actually belonged to it. A lot of Mick Jagger inspired vocals.

It’s ok.

Beyond unique, too canoncial for less than 4 stars but a little too loose and sloppy for 5.

Este disco es una FUMADOTOTOTOTOTA que imagino está aquí por ser un magnífico exponente del "rock ácido" Pero el disco me agradó bastante y con gusto lo volvería a escuchar. Agregué una canción a mi lista: "Tried to hide", que por cierto me recordó al estilo de “Bad Boy” de los Beatles, y no creo que sea coincidencia.

Muy psicodélico pero lo que no me gustó fue el exceso de tucutucutucutucutu en todas las canciones, quién les dijo que eso estaba en onda?

3.5 - No tenía idea de que existían The Elevators o su electric jug. Fuera de que abusan de ese sonido poniéndolo en todas las canciones, me pareció un rock psicodélico muy a gusto y en particular me agradó 'Fire Engine'
