Lennon and McCartney only 21-22 years old (Harrison even younger!) when they recorded this - amazing really. The covers are mostly impressive (some a bit too m.o.r., but reflective of the music scene at the time), but the originals shine. Unbelievable talent at such young ages. I think theyre taken for granted these days - some people forget what they brought to music some 60 years ago. Bravo.
Whoosh.....that's the sound of this music going right over my head. I just don't "get" it. It sounds impressive and he's obviously a very talented musician, but it just doesn't move or involve me in any way. I'm sure that it's me - not him!
Damon can write a good pop tune, but his voice can be a tad wearingover the course of a whole album.
it's taken me almost 30 years to get around to listening to this. I'm a fool....should have listened sooner - great album, and thats after 1 x listen!

If you've got Dummy, you're sorted.
An album to take you back in time. Pretty much a classic. The band should have been given an Iggy Pop and the......whatever they wanted to call themselves credit though. Theyre as much a part of it's success as Iggy.

Something new, yet a reminder of the past. Lovely.
Superb album. All Sault albums are worth having!
Can this be given 6 x stars?
Gotta love that Chic sound!
Gotta love that Chic sound!
I was happy back then....
Groove Is In The Heart is a stone cold classic - everyone knows that! The rest of the lp is not quite that standard, but thats forgiven as nothing could really top G.I.I.T.H.
Dare I say it....but OTT production?
listening to it for the first time in years....holy s@*t - I forgot how great it is! Just pure loud live guitar - superb.
great sound and very much of it's time.
one of the greatest albums ever. And I keep buying it in any new re-issue/re-master/box set hoping that their will be even more to discover. Can't be praised highly enough!
Had a listen to it for the time in ages. Still an outstanding album, but verging on being " very of its time".
Nonetheless, not a poor track on it!
And a coincidence it appeared today? I think not!
so many great tunes. This was a big risk releasing this many songs on one album. Carries it off with great aplomb.
Probably the most commercial album that Tim made. You can imagine Jeff singing some of these songs. This is a good way in to discovering Tim. Work your way backwards from here!
One to play loud! Tunes galore. They never really bettered this, but what a debut.
I can hear the quality, but it doesn't do it for me.
From Wiki - "Some reviewers were less enthusiastic. Jon Tiven from Circus argued that there was a lack of memorable material on the album: "Just when Stevie had some momentum going, he went and put together a concept album of homogeneous music and rather typical lyrics. Unlike his last two albums, there are no real low spots on this album, which I suppose is an improvement, but there are no songs on Innervisions which are truly outstanding either. There's no 'Superstition,' no 'I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever).' By constructing a solid ground from which to work, Stevie has lowered the ceiling, and put a damper on his talents."
No truly oustanding songs? Bet Jon feels silly now.
Stevie was 22-23yo when he made this - astonishing!
It does not get much better than this! A 5 star album any day of the week. I saw Tom and the Heartbreakers supporting Nils Lofgren when this album came out. Nils was great, but impossible to follow Tom!
Stone cold classic. And yet I still rate Station to Station, and yes, Young Americans even better!
This didn't get enough recognition at the time. A fantastict album, you could just sense the talent and knew that she was destined for great things.
Classic Waits. And you won't find many better Side 1's than this. Amazing how Tom re-invented himself. A rare and very special talent.
What an album! Takes me back to 74 when I played this to death. Saw them on tour at the time too, supported by Pilot. Not played it for awhile, but this will be remedied immediately!
The Rascals - 2 x great vocalists/songwriters, fantastic drummer, and excellent guitarist- what a band! This album is great, but somewhat hampered by strange production on a few songs. That said, listen to the perfection of Eddies vocal on How Can I Be Sure. And theres no more that can be said about Groovin' that hasn't been said before - one of the greatest songs ever. I don't want to say that the Rascals are underrated - because those that know - know how talented they are. I just wish that they were included more often in any list of the best bands/albums of the 60's.
This is what a 5 star album sounds like. I so wish that Lou had recorded more with Ronson/Bowie. Timeless record. An old school album that you play from start to finish.
My most fave Aerosmith album - the right balance of rock and melody!
Somewhat overrated in the best album of all time lists that appear all too frequently these days. Catchy (and quite often familiar!) tunes let down by shockingly poor lyrics.
I've been meaning to listen to this for 53 years! Finally had a go, it's not bad.
I'm not sure which I prefer - this or Live Rust - either way, both worthy of at the very least 5 stars!
Best album in the history of recorded music!
An amazing album. Full of heart and soul. A complete and utter joy to listen to.
Catchy riffs copied from other tunes, and awful lyrics. Dense and arrogant lead singer and a songwriter that must thank his lucky stars that he was born with a gift for re-imagining other artists superior tunes.
Despite his personal failings - this is still an amazing pop album.
All Aimee's lp's are worth having - but this the the must 'must have'. Gorgeous tunes and intelligent lyrics. Every home should have one. Jon Brion deserves praise too!
He has released many fine albums, but this is the one that started it all off, a classic.
Fantastic album and fantastic sleeve!
Every time you play this you hear something new. Outstanding album. I've bought more versions that I can list. This really should be in everyone's record collection.
this is the one that kicked off my love for rock music. I know it inside out and have worn out at least 3 x copies. I had just turned 16 and just played it continually. I passed on old copies to younger folk in the hope they would discover the same joy that I had found. It really is that good. Perfect sleeve and printed lyrics too. An easy 5.
Along with Come On Pilgrim and Doolittle, one of the best trilogy of albums ever. And such an influence on the acts that came after. Classic!
What power! The crunch of the guitar sound. The snap of the drums. The thud of the bass (mostly Steve Jones again) and the sneer of the vocals. They were never going to top this. Perfection.
Perfection. Songs, performance, sound - just a truly wonderful album.
You can't listen to this and not be amazed by the songs and production. A Jam/Lewis masterpiece! Play loud.
An absolute classic. Every home should have a copy. Others may prefer the second album 'Hats', and yes, its a close run thing, but the first album just pips it. Gorgeous tunes, lyrics that set the mood, and what sound/production! My 249th album to review here, and it's easily the best of the lot. It's that good. I envy you if it's the first time you hear this, what a discovery! We need a six star button.
You can keep Rumors - this is the one! Lindsay in particular in his most creative period ever. This album continues to astound all these years later.
I've tried with Zappa on numerous occasions, just can't see the appeal .
"Bowie starts to become Bowie" perfect description! This album never gets old. Ans an ideal entry for the younger folk to discover his songwriting. Definitely belongs in the 5 star club.
there aren't many albums without a dud or two on them, and this is one of those albums - no filler, AND there's an extra 7" with even more great songs. A classic.
Every home should have one.
Every home should have one.
Just the feel good album of all time! Guaranteed to lift your mood.
Never gets old! Wish that I could have seen live them at their peak. Play loud.
I thought that Tom was the funniest thing ever (not intentionally) when I first saw him on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Scary bendy fingers too. Fast forward a couple of years and I'm working in a record store. The manager insisted that I give Tom another chance. What a wise manager! I went back to the start and was hooked. Yes, his vocal style became more gruff on each subsequent album. But oh my, what fantastic albums. The jazz scthick definitely wore thin towards the end of the Warners albums. But not many better 3 x album runs than his first 3 on Island. The ANTI albums ain't too shabby either. So, give him another chance (particularly the Island stuff), he's worth it!
very good, but slightly blown out of proportion as to how good it is.
there are 5star albums and then there is Doolittle - it deserves another 5 stars at the very least. I'm struggling to think of an album that's better than this!
this is almost a greatest hits itself! Great tunes and the perfect mix of beats and loops and guitars and cocky vocals. Deserves way more praise than it gets.
All-time classic. And considering the circumstances that it was made in, all the more amazing how fantastic it turned out!
Pretty much the perfect proper rock album. Great songs, great musicians. And great stories behind the making of the album and the musicians lives since.
If it wasn't for Yellow Submarine.....
a great band. This is their peak!
I just can't handle her voice, it really grates. A personal view of course, I know that millions of other folk are fans.
an easy 5 stars! Almost a greatest hits album. Never gets old!
Yes, a fair few tweaks and overdubs, but what a sound! Really makes you wish that you had been there.
I've tried, but this just doesn't seem to agree with me. I know that its rated a classic by many, but too difficult for me to get into. I do like some of Fripp's later solo work, and definitely his work with Bowie and The Roches.
I liked Bruce way back in the day. I couldn't get past this though. Too lo-fi? Too sombre? That accent he puts on ? It just didn't click with me.
Gorgeous sound on this album.
Gorgeous sound on this album.
Gorgeous sound on this album.
Beautiful album. Her voice is like an instrument in its own right. And recorded so well. An old fashioned, listen to it all the way through type of album. Perfection.
I've had vinyl, cassette, cd, then back to vinyl versions. It's that good that I must always have a copy. Obviously, very different in content to What's Going On, but easily its equal.
Billy could sing and Alan could play! A terrific album. May they both rest in peace.
top 3 Bowie album. Fantastic production, great songs and Bowie was in his finest vocal form - just listen to Wild Is The Wind or Word On A Wing. Excellent band too, PLAY LOUD!
Green Gartside really does need to release new material! Very much missed.
Peter's peak! Fantastic album- songs, production, playing, vocals. It was always going to be a hard one to follow. Subsequent albums have their moments, but this is the one.
All time classic. 1 star removed due to unfortunately titled final track!
Joni just doesn't do it for me. Its me, not Joni!
Witty and charming. I can see from some other reviewers reviews that they don't get it. Neil Hannon is a fantastic songwriter. It's not rock and roll, but something altogether more clever and thoughtful.
I hadn't heard this before. Just gave it a spin - very good power pop influenced American punk. I'll certainly listen again!
I've tried over the years, but I'm obviously not the audience for this. Just sounds like lots of noodling on the horn. I just can't see/hear the appeal.
Whats the appeal? He's truly truly awful. This is the type of album that you need a zero star option for.
Easy 5 stars. Ideally listened to as a complete album. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
Great album. Takes me back to happier times. 1986? Jeez, 39 years! His best album (for me).
A Marvin album for the mid-90's.
Their best and most original album by far.
An all-time classic. A beautiful record. Every home should have one. And go see them live! 6 stars.
I just can't hear the appeal.
Just a lovely thing to listen to. He makes it sound so effortless.
I can't think of an album that typifies the '80's more than this one. Production, videos, the album sleeve screams 1984. That said, Tina was in fine form vocally. Good choice of songs that she covered too. I can't say that I go back to it often, but its one of Tina's best.
A period piece. It would have been something special and different at the time, but it doesn't have legs.
He's obviously enormously respected, but I don't get it.
Sheer perfection. It's an experience listening to this. The songs, the sound, the band all come together to make an outstanding album of songs that tell stories. I can understand how some folk got tired of the jazzy schtick of the later Warners albums (I know that I did). This was the start of something new, what a transformation. Everyone should own a copy.
You can't really argue that its not a 5 star album. A 70's classic. And it plays like a greatest hits album as every track is so well known. A truly special album.
29 years ago- no way! A great album and a great live entertainer.
I'm sure that all who rate albums here have an album (or two) that they have bought more than once or twice over the years as new versions (re-mastered, vinyl, sacd, blu ray, extra tracks, etc) are issued. This is the one for me - it's so good that I'm always keen to find another version in case it introduces a new sound, a surprise that I may not have picked up on before. Just an all-time classic!
You tend to forget what a great album this is overall. The attention is obviously given to Fast Car - but Talkin' Bout A Revolution, Baby Can I Hold You, For My Lover are also fantastic songs.
Probably his best album tune for tune.
