The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators
The 13th Floor Elevators
Reviews (page 6 of 7)
2/19/26. Whatever that sound device they use in every song is, it REALLY annoys me. 4/10
Ok 2/5
Once again, I usually like this genre but this one was a miss. All the songs had some weird background sound effect which sort of blended them all together and resulted in sloppy disoriented album
playing a game called “how long does it take for the guy to start making silly noises with his mouth” and the twist is the answer is always ten seconds or less
It was a fine sounding, yet forgettable album. Each song sounded the same, which isn't bad by itself, but there was nothing that stood out.
Almost completely un-listenable for me. I don’t think it’s a 1 in any musical sense but I simply cannot stomach it at this time. 1.5-2
On Roller Coaster, you’re telling me a pigeon cooed this beat? They didn’t even credit the bird. I think there are better examples from this era. It wasn’t unlistenable though.
I’ve been meaning to listen to this forever and now I did and I kinda forgot most of it. I liked Splash One. Very good album art.
boo-boO-booOOp These random assortments of noises were a stain on this otherwise decent album, and I hoped in vain at the start of every track that I'd heard the last of it. Finding out that these rarely musical elements were somehow made by a dude vocalizing into a glass jug in front of a mic? Sort of impressive, maybe more annoying. I went on to learn that the "electric jug" "musician", Tommy Hall, is living in squalor in the Bay Area and doing "research" to unlock the meaning of life through 60+ years of psychedelic drug use. When asked about what he's learned: "I could try to explain it, but my mind would revert to the pure mathematical state required for horizontal thinking. You will just have to wait until I put it in writing." Anyways, I liked the spring reverb-drenched guitars and the cutting vocals. Psych rock is really interesting, and at times irritating.
Not for me
No major faults just didn’t particularly strike me as a great album. Still a good album. 👍
Rocky Erikson’s bad trip.
Many people have tried to convince me that since I like Psychedelic bands like Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, I should love this album. I do not love this album. It's a very thin line between "love" and "tolerate". Near as I can tell, this album is considered "Psychedelic" because it was made by people who were on drugs. It's basically a Garage Rock album with some weird sounds going on underneath.
this is a pretty okay garage rock record, all things considered. Roky Erickson is a compelling frontman, and the band behind him is decent enough. "You're Gonna Miss Me" was a minor hit, and it's endured as a classic of the psych underground. in fact, the 13th Floor Elevators were probably the band that coined the term "psychedelic rock". there's a lot of history here, but also one glaring issue. an empty jug can be played as an instrument by buzzing your lips near its mouth. the resulting tone is low and hoarse, and typically in a bass register. I mention this because the 13th Floor Elevators' jug player, Tommy Hall, seems to have missed this memo. instead, he holds it up to his mouth and goes "dugudugudu" in a goofy falsetto. he does this on nearly every song. it gets annoying almost instantly. shout-out to Hall for having the gusto to form an entire band and personal lifestyle around the use of psychedelic drugs, but I think the clarity of sobriety might have spared us from a terrible fate as listeners. apparently he became a Scientologist later in life, which I'm not sure is much better. strong 4/10.
nothing memorable here sounds a bit dated
Ehhh didn’t stick out for me
Não gostei muito.
Very cool for about 15 minutes. The mouth/jug sounds (bop bop bop bop) got so exhausting after that.
Did not enjoy.
Maybe the best name of the psychedelic era, but I always got them confused with the Electric Prunes’ “Had too much to dream last night” so this has always been a disappointing listen for that dumb reason.
pain to listen to tbh
2.5 - Meh
2.5 - ok got a little worn out by the end
… hm. I don’t know. I got pretty bored. I respect it for the role it played in inventing the genre, apparently, but the genre was improved upon in subsequent records from other groups. Can’t see myself ever having any real desire to revisit any tracks off this one -> two stars it is
It was okay. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. Wouldn’t get much replay value out of it. I’ll revisit it in a few months and see if anything has changed.
Didn't offend me, but not really my thing. Nothing stood out to me and I'm unlikely to listen again. I can see why some would like it though.
This probably sounded pretty interesting and crazy in 1966. So I'll give them that. But in 2026 it just sounds like shit.
A bit too psychedelic for my taste.
3/10
A fun, albeit slightly crazed, take on 60s psychedelia. It's certainly ahead of its time (if only by about a year) and has decent instrumentation to back it up. The drumming throughout the album is fantastic. Very heavy when it needs to be, light at other times, and the fills are just the right about of engaging without going overboard. The basswork is also extremely dynamic. It's what listeners like myself vastly prefer instead more stationary basslines (which unfortunately tend to be more common pre-70s). The singing is fine but doesn't do much to distinguish itself from more famous contemporaries. Production-wise, the recording (at least in the mono mix) is very rough-around-the-edges, almost like garage rock. Not my thing at all. Records like this are in desperate need of a remaster. Roller Coaster is defined by its strange background sound effect, which is halfway between a high, monotone monkey noise and a rag being rubbed against wet glass. At least, I thought it would only be Roller Coaster. But Reverberation has the same effect. As does Thru the Rhythm, and Tried to Hide, and You Don't Know. In fact, nearly all the tracks feature noises from what I dub the "monotonously horny primate", including the main single You're Gonna Miss Me (though in that case it's far back in the mix). Turns out it comes from a band member whose sole purpose is to vocalise against an electric jug, creating one of the most annoying noises known to music (certainly in psychedelia). The band must know it's pretty irritating and monkeylike – heck, the album's penultimate track is called Monkey Island, and has one of the most prominent electric jug parts of the whole record. I'm not sure I want to reward these decisions with a positive rating. 2/5 Key tracks: You're Gonna Miss Me, Don't Fall Down, Kingdom of Heaven
I know this album came out in the sixties, but boy is that mixing Not Good. Hearing the vocals was most certainly a trial. Outside of that, this was an average psychedelic album. I thought the song title of "Don't Fall Down" was cute coming from this band and album name, at least. "Fire Engine" had that surfer sound like in "Wipe Out," which preceded this album by 3 years. Definitely a 2.
This was pretty generic psychedelic rock music. I didn't dislike it, but definitely wasn't wowed by it. Other reviews alluded to a specific "noise" that is used throughout the album; I can confirm that I both heard it and disliked it. It almost sounds like scratching a vinyl jacket with your fingernails over and over and over and over...and over. Probably around a 2.5 for me, but not motivated to round up, as while this was listenable, it didn't stand out and was pretty forgettable.
Wanted to like this but it didn’t catch me right
Not great, an hour and a half of the same thing, until Fire Engine came along which was especially quite bad 3.2/10
I Tried to Hide from the Reverberation of this album. You Don't Know how much I'm going to try to forget Through the Rythym. 4 // 10
Didn't impress too much.
Random thoughts about this album: 1. This confirms my general dislike of 60's psychedelic rock. 2. I do not like the electric jug. I thought I'd get used to it, but mostly it annoyed me when it was used. 3. There is a very good reason the electric jug is not commonly used. 4. The only song I actually enjoyed is the one that I don't think had any of the electric jug, which is Splash 1. Not sure if this will get a one or a two rating. It depends on whether Splash 1 was enough to put it over the top and I haven't yet decided.
Interesting
Hard to listen to, weird sounds, 2
Another example of a dusty old historical record that does not reach out from the 60s and provides entertainment in 2025. Kinda interesting at times but ultimately quite forgettable.
Not really my thing
great now i'm high
Definite period curiosity piece.
I was worried by the album's title. The "psychedelic sounds" of anything gives me pause and this sounded exactly like what I feared it might. I mean, sure, it's groovy, baby. But I'll take my trip without the soundtrack, please.
Meh. Not for me.
I can appreciate these guys for setting the stage for psychedelic grunge rock. It’s raw, dirty and imperfect while still delivering an in-your-face banshee howl sound. But holy shit that overused amplified jug is annoying. I thought I was listening to Curly from the Three Stooges running around in circles trippin’ balls on acid. Unfortunately that kills any hopeful vibes.
Sounds like 60s psychedelic rock. Didn’t really do it for me. 2.25
What the eff is that mumbling White Lotus-esque sound on most of the songs??? This would have been an easy three without that shite, but I am rounding down cuz it annoyed the shit out of me. 2.25/5
I guess it’s an innovative album, and it has a couple decent tunes, but I’m left pretty cold by it. The guitar tone is grating, the production is bad, and the songs feel really half-baked.
After a while the wopawopawoo was all I could here. Interesting experiment, but I think they threw it all away on that one ever-present sound. Maybe it would work better if I was high.
Best Song: Kingdom of Heaven. I like that it feels like the most knock-off version of Stairway to Heaven. Worst Song: Monkey Island. A chaotic song that never seemed to have a point or rhythm to it. Overall: If this whole list has taught me anything, it is to be wary whenever I see an album with 25+ songs. It almost always betrays an inability to edit, wherein the artists seem to have just uncritically dumped every attempted song into one big pile. This album is no different.
Enjoyable, but there was this annoying sound on most of the songs that was distracting.
I’ve never heard of this, and am about 60 years from this feeling relevant. I did read that it’s considered a major influence on succeeding bands, and I can give them a point for being innovators. As a listen though, it’s ok mid-60s psychedelia-influenced rock that I’d prefer not to listen to.
So much weird shit going on in the background of this album. I really liked some of this but that weird shit is very distracting...
its not bad, its kinda funny knowing that they probably did this under the influence of weed. Not going back but it was an okay experience.
Everything about this, from the artwork to the band name to the music, feels like a pastiche of a typical 60s psychedelic band, perhaps created for an Austin Powers-style movie. But nope, this was a real, legit group from the earliest days of psychedelia, nailing the whole look and feel of the scene in one fell swoop. The actual tunes are a bit average to be honest - there are far better 60s psych records out there - but it has its moments, and surely deserves credit for its pioneering use of the 'electric jug'. 2.5.
Psychedelic is not my favorite flavor of rock music. I'm trying to wrap my head around what the heck an electric jug would even look like. Is that what that annoying background noise is? There was way too much of that. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.
Mostly had the same groove and cadence as every other 60's rock. Had some psychadelic elements that were pretty good, but also sounded like it was recorded through an empty soup can
One good ish tune (the album opener) and then the rest fairly generic 60's pysch rock (probably being unfair as these guys apparently invented the genre). There is a good reason why the electric jug never caught on.
That electronic jug gets annoying in the background of every song. Maybe they were pioneers, but every song sounds like it has a better version done by someone else.
Pretty boring given their contemporaries. Feels pretty half hearted. I can’t remember who but someone in my life that I played with loves this band and this album and I know way too much about this band than I want to. Still don’t love it. Teetering between two and three, nothing on here makes me want to come back but I love the little doodleloodleloddleloo sound throughout this thing, really ruins like half the songs but at least it’s funny.
Not a bad listen, nothing i outright hated, but also nothing that i really loved. The album cover is a great, and some of the musical composition is unique. The electric jug is absolutely horrible though Probably won’t listen again
Yet another shitty 60s psyche album. This was one of the better ones I’ve listened to but it was still an ordeal to get through.
All a bit samey 5/10
Better than I was expecting as most "60's psychedelic" stuff is just annoying noise. This would be better if it didn't have that annoying "wooboodooboodeebeedooboo" noise in the background of almost all the songs!
roller coaster has quite a cool sound. splash 1 is quite lovely. the electric jug being so prominent in every single song is really starting to annoy me. i listened to the original track listing versions decided by the band. nothing interested me enough to want to listen to another mix. all in all… didn’t really love it much. 2/5 ⭐️⭐️
2/3
I'm increasingly of the opinion that psychedelics are required to enjoy psychedelic rock
Psychedlic garbage
Maybe a bit better than my general feeling towards late 60s psychedelic stuff, but not that much.
Could have been pretty good if it wasn’t 100 years long
little bit boring
The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators are enhanced by use of the electric jug. The electric jug gets the 13th Floor Elevators on the 1001 Must Hear List. And the electric jug makes me smile. If you care to take note, you’ll find that most hotels in the US do not have a 13th floor. (2.2*s)
This band epitomizes the genre with the name, trippy tunes, use of LSD while recording, cover art...it's the 60s psychedelic scene captured in time on an album. I started out really into the Sounds but after a while that damn electric jug, although very original and out there, just got annoying and pulled me away from the songs. Roky should have used it sparingly but he oversaturated the record with it. Still, I think the album deserves a list spot. Clever work on "Fire Engine" with the eerie sirens and "Kingdom of Heaven" is truly an acid trip track. If I ever try the drug...this album is getting play. 2.25 stars.
Another 60’s psychedelic mess, really not into this stuff.
Not our thing
this is some of the most generic psych rock i've ever heard. scooby doo background music.
Serviceable psych at best. The bubbling sound on a lot of songs is terribly annoying and kills some really decent tunes. You’re Gonna Miss Me is the only real standout here.
jesus h. christ this was painful.. took me like 5 days to go through it.
I’m sure those electric jugs sounded amazing when they were stoned off their asses making this album.
Far too long. I get the jist. Not great.
This was a wild ride... It kind of sounds like someone may have let a wild turkey in the studio or something. I'm really not sure what exactly that was about. Interesting none the less, definitely different!
Got off at floor 2
Boring, derivative slop.
Psychadelia never sounded so square. And in 1966! Surely there were questions over whether this was actually a CIA psyop. I mean: Instilling values the sick define/ That keeps the fabric that keeps you blind/ And ties your hands and cloaks your mind/ But on my stilts, I'm above the slime If you imagine that this is actually coming out of Langley, suddenly it all makes sense.
This is asinine. That stupid psychedelic effect peppered all throughout the backing elements of the songs totally wreck what are otherwise serviceable rock jaunts. Not a fan.
Much like alot of the psych rock of this era, this was yet another difficult listen. Hardly memorable, outside of it being not very good. 5/10
That electric jug was not a decision of sober people.
Uuuuuurrrrrggggghhhhh - more US psychedelica. Do we need this much? Seemingly, the most important thing about this album is it is the first use of the word "psychedlic" in print. Other than that, this would be just a footnote in musical history. I'm sure when mashed on that Haigh-Ashbury brown acid the "Electric Jug" seemed like a great idea at the time - instead it just becomes annoying. Much like so much of this genre. The saving grace for this band is the garage rock tendancies seem to shine through - only just. Best Tracks: You're Gonna Miss Me; Fire Engine; Monkey Island
Not particularly good, sounds immature.
Ubiquitous aquatic scatting, twangy/floaty electric. I could listen to a song here or there in the future, not my cup of tea right now unfortunately
Interesting since I don't listen to psychedelic much. The jug sound is unique. Tracks to Track: Roller Coaster
probably was cooler at the time
Oh yeah! Well familiar with the opening track 'You're Gonna Miss Me' because I used to best friends with the High Fidelity OST back in the day. Now why TF are there 27 MF tracks on this album? 27?? I think the reason is drugs. I find most early psychedelic rock to be up it's own arse. This is no different. All the songs sound the same especially as they all use the same bird call woo woo wah wah type of sound effect or instrument that was cool on Miss Me but gets so old over, let's not forget, 27 fucking tracks. I started listening to the mono version then unintentionally switched to the 2008 remastered version and it's definitely a more tolerable listen in stereo. Only just.
Dime a dozen (or in this case, baker's dozen) psychedelic rock music. Too vanilla to be innovative, too indistinguishable to be unique, and too boring to get more than a 2 star rating from me.
Okay, I can hear some cool and interesting sounds here, and I can recognize this album is important for the history of psychadelic rock. That being said, if I hear the sound of the electric jug going bulululululululululu again I'm going to commit a felony. And any novelty or appeal this had 60 years ago has just been outclassed - the only reason to listen to this over something better is to appreciate history.
bulululu (this wasn’t very good. the production was also really low quality even in the remaster)
60slop and some jugs Standouts: Roller Coaster • Reverberation
Eh, this was kind of uninteresting to me. Typical drug-induced, self-indulgent psych rock from the 60s. I will give them credit for the concise songs and the experimentation with production.
Terrible, I get it's definitely of that era. However the 'jug' or whatever it's called makes some of the most annoying noises I have ever heard. There's maybe one or two songs on this album that are bearable but I can't say I ever want to listen to any of these songs ever again
Cool sounds but a bit to eclectic. One really ok song.
Good. Everything sounded the same. Might listen while tripping sometime
2,5
Psychedelic but that's it, nothing to remark. Some acid rock from the 80's
Just a bit too weird psychedelic for me and didn’t do much. 2 stars
this is not a remarkable album at all.
Psychedelic background noise…
Eh. I don't think I'd revisit this one. 2/5
Not for me too early Beatles-esque
This would've been fine if it weren't for the stupid fucking windshield wiper noise in every single song. 2
4.5/10
Me recuerda a unos Black angels menos oscuros y mas amateur.
Very much like the Electric Prunes - 1 good ish tune (the album opener) and then the rest fairly generic 60's pysch rock (probably being unfair as these guys apparently invented the genre). There is a good reason why the electric jug never caught on.
The Psychedelic Sound of the 13th Floor Elevators Is there a genre that has such an outsize reputation compared to the number of actually good albums as 60s psychedelia? It is a genre I like, but I can’t think of many albums that are good from start to finish, it's much more of a compilation or playlist genre, there are a lot of gems and diamonds in the rough around and it’s far better served on something like Nuggets, rather than trudging though albums. You’re Gonna Miss Me, with the slightly electric Dylan feel in its descending structure and acerbic off handedness, is a prime example, a classic Nuggets garage-psych-rock banger. And its similar to I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night by The Electric Prunes the other week in how it’s a great psych track amid a collection of largely forgettable and badly recorded bluesy garage psychedelia. Don’t Fall Down, the Jagger-sounding Thru The Rhythm and Monkey Island are probably the pick of the those, but even they feel pretty inessential. Like The Electric Prunes, it’s an appreciate the historical context but put the one good song on a playlist and forget about it album. 2. 🛗🛗 Playlist submission: You’re Gonna Miss Me
It's an interesting album, with some decent tracks, and I hear a lot of later bands here. At the time it was probably important - but then I think Tomorrow Never Knows was released a couple of months before this, and that puts the album into a pretty primitive context. The mono mix has some punch (I found the stereo mixed highly flawed bouncing from left to right), but remains eight miles behind Revolver by every measure. I'm not sure I enjoyed it less than The Monks - but it doesn't get to a good rating, although I find it an interesting album of its time.
I don't need this.
Se me hizo bola...
☀︎before listening: curious about the jug sound half the reviews seem to talk about ☀︎conclusion: i do not like the jug sound. en fait je pense pas que j’appellerais ça “jug sound” mais bon i get what it is
Just not as sick to me as it is to them
The electric jug sounds like a Turkey that's near the band performing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t6E3-ogPcU There are elements that I could like, but the jug makes it so distracting that I can focus on whatever positives I could find
Some nice tunes here and there but in total it sounds too dated to me. Not really my cup of tea.
Never heard of the band or any of these songs. Very average 60s guitar
This was probably better cool in 1965…this just doesn’t hold up. Skipped trough most of album.
As much as I appreciate the impact and pioneering efforts of the band, this record is overwhelming. The jug playing is distracting and it’s vocally chaotic at times - This is exactly what you’d expect from a group of musicians on a permanent acid trip. One listen is enough.
Probably would have enjoyed this without that jug...
Jaja
Not bad but nothing exciting.
You’re gonna miss me is great but I found the rest of the album a bit lacking redundant. That electric jug was driving me nuts by about the fourth song. Would have been more effective if used sparingly!
Actual elevators could've made something more engaging than this.
I expected more. Their unique sound gets old fast.
I can't do a hour and a half of this.
Jaja
Not a fan
Ka so psychedelic Rock esch eigentlech no geil, das esch jetzt aber de doch fascht weder e chli langwiilig ond z fescht I einere Form.
I've tried listening to this before. Meh.
I appreciate the history of rock and roll as much as the next old white guy, but there's nothing special here for me. I would say I'm a fan of psychedelic rock and space rock, and I can see how this represents at least part of the origin of that music, but there's nothing about this that grabs me. It's got that mid- to early '60s jangle-pop feel and that leaves me with the impression that it's generic sounding, electric jug be damned.
Good guitar work goes to waste in this psychedelic mess. The electric jug is annoying as hell.
This is definitely 60s psychedelic music. The electric jug was truly distracting in its weirdness and for me, took away from what might have been several good songs. Nothing on here is as good as Two Headed Dog.
This was just stereotypical 60s music to me
Enjoyed it to begin with but the quality dropped off and lost its pizzazz. 2.5 stars
Mmm. Not for me.
Gear: ZMF Bokeh Artwork: 👁️🗨️🍄🎨 Production: 🔊🔇🆗/🔊🔊😵💫 Music: ⚡️🥤🌀👁️🗨️🌈🔮 Rating: 💊💊/5
Alright.
Promising but ultimately pretty dull
point1.
60's psychadelic rock. Beside the jug nothing outstanding.
Just like the acid they were probably on it peaks in the beginning and slowly fades.
Very of its era. Kinda a vibe, kinda a drag.
Definitely didn't do enough drugs to appreciate this.
You can hear the surf rock roots of psychedelic rock in You're Gonna Miss Me. The noise in Roller Coaster is super distracting. It's like the worst possible use of the organ in Baba O'Riley. This was the first band to designate themselves as "psychedelic rock"...thanks for nothing. Amplified jug is the instrument driving me insane. They had an "amplified juggist". I bet Daniel Johnston loved this band, not only does his music sound like theirs, they are both from Austin. Confirmed, he did a 13th Floor Elevators cover on his biggest album. Janis Joplin and the lead singer of this band have a similar wail. I'll bet Big Brother and the Holding Company heard them and thought they could do the same thing, only with a woman as the lead singer. Monkey noises on Monkey Island, I guess it delivers what it promises.
Sounds like the 60s
Sounded like a lot of other 60s
I've had enough 60s thanks
Idk what noise kept playing in literally every single song, but it needs to stop
Lazy review: kind of a slog
Wow, never heard of electrical jug before! …can't say that it is that good or versatile.
Meh.
Excited by the first few songs then realised they were all the same. You can see how some modern songs have drawn inspiration from this kind of music which was interesting.
2 stars. Not bad exactly, but definitely not an album I'll return to.
2.5
Didn’t hate it, but taking a star off because that electric jug is on every damn track for no good reason
One good song, the rest sounds like Yoko Ono when she "performed" with John Lennon and Chuck Berry in '72.....
..
A poor man's Zombies. There's no reason for this to be on the list.
Non mi piace il genere
It all feels a bit discordant and messy. It’s giving me low level anxiety on a good day, so I’d hate to think how it would make me feel if I was on acid. Happy to abandon this one after the original 35mins, no way am I sticking around for the 2 disc expanded edition.
Decent, but annoying background sounds throughout each song. could be better without that! -You Tried to Hide
All my life I grew up thinking that buildings didn't have a 13th floor out of superstition, but it turns out they were just trying to avoid this album.
It got old fast. It's psychedelic protopunk I guess, but the recording style kills it for me. There’s a reason why “electric jug” is an “instrument” only found on one album. 2⭐️
Tydligen betraktat som den första psykadeliska rockgruppen. Skön musik!
I wondered if the only reason this album was on the list was because it was one of the first albums to sound like this, and it turns out: maybe yeah. Otherwise I can't really think of anything to note about this one. Pretty forgettable.
I like it for what it is and understand its significance. But...one listen was probably enough for me. I do love that album cover, though.
It's like I walked through a beaded curtain into a smoky San Francisco LSD lounge. I won't leave the same person from which I came. The more I listened the more every song sounded the same. Very cool 60’s album cover though.
Boring rock with some funky beats or whatever thrown in the mix
Not bad. Just a bit generic.
Thru the rhythm starts out with a familiar riff, and there's a lot of similarities from this album with a range of other artists that I just can't seem to nail down. Sounds a lot like early British rock/light punk bands, although they were from texas and this album is from 2010.
For a time, my summary stated that psychedelic rock was one of my worst genres. I wasn’t sure if that was entirely accurate, but if this album is anything to go by, it just might be. To be fair, I thought the album was alright in the first few tracks, even though the electric jug was a little grating. Imagine a pigeon cooing as it drowned. Now imagine that for a majority of the album. After Splash 1, the album started to wear me down. It just sounded loud. I don’t even think it would sound good high. The electric jug would just give me anxiety. I was flirting with a three, but after Fire Engine and Monkey Island, that seemed too high. Favorite track: Splash 1 (the most bearable) Other hits: Roller Coaster, You’re Gonna Miss Me
does what it said on the tin. psych noise
🦝
Listened to the first song and thought oh that boop-boop-beep-boop thing they are doing is kind of interesting. Let's see what else they come up with. There is nothing else. It's boop-boop-beep-boop or some variation on every damn song except for one maybe. That's their gimmick and they stuck to it. I was thinking I might stretch and give this a 3/5 as the rest was OK, nothing to shout about, then when it was over I switched on the radio and the Animals' House of the Rising Sun was playing, and I realized how big a difference there was in quality with this album, though the style of music is similar.
It was fine, I didn’t regret hearing it but I won’t go back to any of the songs.
2 sterne
Barely a two. Not surprised I’ve never heard of this
First 2 tracks "You're Gonna Miss Me" and "Roller Coaster" were really good. Especially "Roller Coaster" sounded very modern and had a very cool riff. The rest felt kind of weak though. Wasn't a fan of the mixing and nothing else grabbed my attention. Strong 2 / weak 3.
Listened to this thinking it was yet more Britpop until I looked up the band—Austin-based. Don't feel I need more Britpop, or emulators
That was a journey…
Not essential 2/5
That was an electric JUG I was hearing in the background the entire time? Gonna be honest, that sound was all I could focus on at a certain point in the album. Certainly unique, but otherwise there was just too much going on sonically. I've heard better psychedelic rock.
I tried. It didn't interest me It's not bad, but it just didn't interest me
Psychedelic music always sounds similar and this is a tedious entry to the genre
Proto-punk by accident; proto-psychedelic by force. If that had been reversed, I would’ve liked it as a whole package. As it is, I only like the hardest hitting, most garage rock inspired songs, and there’s fewer of those than I expected, based on the stellar opener. The rest is chaotic, crowded, acid-fueled mush, but I don’t know what I expected from a band with an electric jug. Nuggets distills this sound and scene better.
Initially, I found this engaging; however, my interest diminished as it went on. This definitely seems like an album I would’ve enjoyed if I was still in my late teens.
FAVO: Splash 1, You don't know
I was expecting to love this based on the cover and brief notes about it, but found that it was too Beatles-esque for me. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: none
Just had no impact on me at all.
Guitar tone was thin, songs were simple and album seemed to drag. Perhaps at the time it was interesting but drab now.
I like to try and write a detailed review for every album, but sometimes I struggle to find ways to describe it. This is a psychedelic rock album and it's decent enough, and that's pretty much all I can say about it really. Nothing really stood out and grabbed me. There's probably a reason why this is an album I've never heard of from a band I've never heard of. I imagine it was a lot more influential and cool when it was released in 1966, but in 2024 it's nothing special.
Parts of this sounded like it could have been made in the 60s which was cool. As a whole though this was kinda long and boring. I did not appreciate that that the stereo versions were not in the same order so I could not skip a song if I had already listened to it.
4/10 - it was kind of bad but not horrible for any specific reason
Songs just sounded bad. These guys were trying way too hard to make something unique and it flopped
The electric jug may be one of the most notable things about this album but it was distracting and super annoying. It wears out it's welcome very quickly making this short 34 minute album seem much longer. The psychedelic vibe was nostalgic for me which saved this one from being a 1.
I couldn't finish it but it was pretty good.
It wasn’t as bad as the reviews are making it seem. There are a couple of songs on the album I’ve quite enjoyed, but man it’s so long???? So really it has to be marked low because it was only a handful of songs that were enjoyable on such a long album.
Ok
Generic hippie stuff. I'm pretty let down by the lack of diversity in this genre, or at least as represented by this list.
To put it politely, it’s different. At times, it’s unrelenting and borderline obnoxious due to the electric jug sound. I’m sure fans of psychedelic rock will find some hits in here, but I cannot. The one thing I will give it is that it’s got hints of something great that never breach the surface of its strangeness.
Good- definitely psychedelic
Very unremarkable psychedelic rock (doesn’t matter if it’s the first to label it that). Best part of it is the album art. 3/10
Maso
It was okay
Meh. A little interesting but it wore out its welcome, especially the “electronic jug” sound which was cool as hell at first then just got straight up annoying. I definitely respect the way the artists were exploring new territory, but I doubt I’ll ever choose to go back to it.
No
A 2 for being one, if not the first psych rock
I don't know if this is coincidence, however, yesterday's album was Big Brother & The Holding Company, and today we get this... Giving this 2* because it didn't make me happy, nor did it piss me off like some of the real garbage albums I am being presented with on my journey. Also, electric jug; really?
Not terrible, not very good either. I'm just not really into that particular kind of rock I guess. It really made no impact on me.
This was fine but got very repetitive very quickly. I guess I have always lived in a post-13th Floor Elevators world so I can't appreciate how (or if) influential they were, but it sounds very generic American 60s hippie trip-rock. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this again.
uninteresting and unremarkable
It's fine, but I'm not really feeling it. I don't know if it's not for me, or if I need to be on the right drugs for this.
Psychedelic sounds of the 60's album, groovy baby!
it’s not like unlistenable but didn’t vibe
Är inte jättebegeistrad direkt.
Pretty dime a dozen 60s garage album. It’s got the one gimmick being the amplified jug, which is cool. This album elicited the following responses from me. Huh. That’s neat. Okay. Sure whatever. Is it over yet?
largely unremarkable, imho. 1.5?
why is there so much psychedelic rock in here
It's alright but didn't wow me. Felt similar to a lot from that era was hoping for something else but there were still some psychedelic sounds to enjoy
I’ve tried to get through this one a few times and the “helicopter/doppler” noise in this one just got worse upon additional listens. Anyway, I could leave this one. I did like the slower/chill track which was 2 or 3. I won’t be revisiting anytime soon.
Nope
I guess there is some goodness in here, and apparently they actually coined the term "psychedelic rock". When I looked that up, I found out that apparently one of the instruments is ... electric jug? Had to go back and figure out where that came in. Kinda cool to have created that weird arpegiated synth sound with a jug. Still, as influential as I'm sure they were, it all sounds too crude and unpolished to my ear. It makes sense that they were influential. It's good to hear the album as an important development, but I'm not likely to return to it.
Sure, it’s good. No, it’s not for me.
It's certainly music, it fine, I've no clue why it's on the list and I've already forgotten alot of it
Oh this one annoyed me. “Ooh man we’re so trippy, maaaan” then it’s just four guys banging our standard 4/4 garage rock. Also the original albums only 35 mins but for some reason the “bonus” is another HOUR of the same with wobble wobble wobble over the top of it. . Sod that.
A serviceable psych/classic rock album with the ridiculously distracting "electric jug" played throughout. If not for the jug it would be fine but it is so distracting...
This wasn't as annoying as I expected it to be, but it was nevertheless quite annoying
2 - It could be good? The sound recording is horrendous, just felt like a wall of noise.
I’ve never been a fan of this band. I have a hard time making my way through a full album.
The music is fine but it’s just not very catch for me.
It started okay but after a while, it was just a distraction.
Yuck.
just kinda bland
If it wasn't for the constant electric jug I would have enjoyed this album alot more
I like flower power, psychedelic music, but this album just ain’t it.
Hm...Yes, it's "psychedelic" for it's time. The mastering reflects the times as well. I always wonder what these might sound like if cleaned up a bit. Hm...
Drowned in acid oblivion.
Pretty generic psych rock. Feel like there have been 10 other albums that sounded just like this. As the album went on, the singer seemingly kept getting farther and farther away from the mic until it sounded like he was in a different room entirely. Bathroomcorepschyrock. 4/10
In a nutshell: one tab of LSD was enough, not a whole sheet. An early example of psychedelic rock. The consistent use of electric jug was distracting and felt gimmicky. I guess if it wasn’t for this album, forthcoming would sound far different. Overall: 4/10
Just did nothing for me. Totally forgettable. 2/5
Listening to disc 1 was enough... my brain really can't tell the difference between one song and the next. I just mixes up in some boring, psychedelic, 60's music... It's not awful to listen to, but it's not a great experience either. 2*
1960s Psychedelic Rock with some haunting themes. If they hadn't had the weird and very subtle gibberish vocal chirping-like sounds in the background of almost every single song on this album, it might have gotten a better rating.
I’ve loved the first track back from High Fidelity. The rest is just kinda irritating.
ANOTHER forgettable psych rock album. But with this one you get all the psych rock without the 60s nostalgia. I initially thought you had to be on drugs to produce this kind of music, not to enjoy it too, but I'm changing my opinion. I don't remember a single song. It's way too long.... wait, is this actual elevator music?
Very dated. Sounds like a lot of 60's music. And wow, that's the longest album ever!!
had to read the other reviews to figure out that that annoying warbling was an... electric jug
It was something! I don’t know I feel like I guess it went by somewhat fast so that’s good rather than dragging along but, I hate to say this again because it’s becoming a pattern, there was nothing that stuck out. I just guess I don’t see anything super influential about this.
Most of this just felt like a mediocre rock band goofing around. Nothing really stuck with me. The album cover is pretty cool I suppose.
Reading this history before listening and it's wild lol. They were on LSD during every recording session. But honestly this album feels a bit like a cliche. I know the album is old, but even with the remaster the mixing is pretty terrible. I don't like whatever machine they're using to make the wubwub window washing sounds. Getting to disc 2, the stereo mixing is better than the mono, but I just don't love any of the songs enough to be excited to listen through a second time. Couldn't really get into this one. Top songs: None?
it was honestly mid wouldn't recommend to funky and strange
General thoughts: idk if it was my source but the sound quality was horrible and in general the production doesn't seem any good. A lot of misses could have been raised up one star were the production better. Same year a lot other bands were releasing much better psychodelic music, I would even say this leans more to classic rock. Favorite songs: Thru the Rythtm & You Don't Know (How Young You Are) Cover: Generic. The concept could have had a better implementation. Real rating: 2.31
Nice to hear the beginning of an era that I did not know. The music is a bit boring, but it was good to learn about where psychedelic came from. Never would have guessed it was Texas...
It can be considered cool in a way. The jug sounds like a drunk pigeon. The bass is pretty good while the singer sounds like a discount Axl Rose, who isn't great to begin with. This album has songs that could fit in a cheap, old "Best of the 60s" compilation CD. There's better psychedelic albums out there. I'm just that the album's not a total stinker. 2 stars for this record.
tbh didn't listen to the full thing >_<
This album has some weird background sounds which are really distracting. I almost liked some of the tracks but the weird reverberation really put me off this album. 2
i don’t really care for this sound
It was just there. Another unnoteworthy psychedelic album. No need to revisit.
Eh, I could take or leave. A little too whimsical for my liking.
Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: No
This project has resulted in me ordering a few 'definitive' editions of remastered classic albums so that I can really optimise my enjoyment of the sonic majesty. Not this shite though, sounds like it was recorded through a wall, and whoever was on the noodle wobble jug thingy is sat right next to the only microphone and wouldn't listen to the request to put the fucking thing down
Couldn’t get into it.
I'm not really sure what this is. It seems like it was interesting and innovative ...once? But maybe hadn't figure out how to be coherent?
Early rock, rolling stones-like. Ok
Likes: You’re Gonna Miss Me, Tried to Hide Would I Listen Again: probably not
I'm a big believer in 'definitely do judge a book by its' cover, however this album let that down big time. I love psych rock and this album, at a glance, looks cool as fuck. I suspect back when this was first released in the 60s it was a great example of throwing the book out and blazing your own trail, but in the 21st century we're spoiled with so many better examples of those things. Rating it low on that basis may not necessarily be in the spirit of the 1001 Albums experience, but I just didn't vibe with this one.
I would have liked it better if the electric jug wasnt in every song. I found it to be distracting.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Generic psychedelic music
Well… it was psychedelic. Had some cool surf rock tones from the 60’s but they used the wah-wah (I think… maybe a thermion) A LOT in just this “trippy” but overused way. Don’t care for it. Won’t listen again.
Actually half decent psych rock
It started out solid and then by the 3rd or 4th song the electric jug just became too prominent for me. It was ok but that jug just couldn't escape my ears as the primary instrument
I love psych rock but I definitely do not like the electric jug.
2/5. Kind of a mid psychedelic rock album, and I do understand it is one of the first ones and paved the way for great albums to come but I don't think it's aged very well, save a few songs. There are many that are just annoying. The use of certain instruments are fun and I'm sure this was wild to hear when it came out but a lot of it feels like flash over quality.
You're gonna miss me - just 60s sound. Nothing original. It just continues on from there in the exact same vibe. At an absolute push I'll give this a 2
La primera canción es la mejor. El resto es repetitivo.
Too many sounds for my pea brain
Not very memorable to me. Sounds like a lot of the psychedelic music from that time period.
Was ein Trip... - Vorweg: Ich liebe Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Greatful Dead etc.!!
I appreciated the darker tone, more in common with the Velvet Underground than hippy dippy clappy psychedelic stuff, but the high pitched sort of flapping noise in the background of some of the tracks was really off-putting and spoiled it for me.
There's far too much going on here. And most of it sounds like sludge being processed. A very confused album.
