Reviews (page 8 of 8)

To be honest, I listened to two tracks and just knew this one wasn’t gonna work for me.

Firmly filing under HARD PASS.

I hated this album

I actually think I could sing better than some of these jabronis. I actually thought some of these songs were the South Park guys but then realized they wouldn’t make incredibly shittty music. Really not my shit minus some guitar work.

Dislike

I couldn't get even halfway through this, and at first I didn't want to rate an album without listening through the whole thing but you couldn't pay me to revisit this noise pollution.

this dude really just sang about Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd the whole f***ing time. Was this Neil Young? Wtf did I just spend an hour and a half on?

When a 20 your album whiffs of 40 year old dad rock. An awful record.

No thanks. Not for me.

Could not get into it….

I get what the topical lyrics are all about. I get that they try to make sense out of the complex legacy the southern US states have had to deal with, between segregation and the old George Wallace supporters among poor white folks... Under that light, I can somehow appreciate the band's intent as they try to reconcile Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd's different takes on such issues. To those it may interest, Neil Young has always been pretty candid about how his song "Alabama" had actually been unfair to the subtleties people who lived there went through--interestingly he never recanted about the overall message of "Southern Man", which might mean he still had a point about southerners' cowardice, at least broadly speaking... But anyway, yes, I "get" what this record is all about. But I *also* get that the music on this album is just damn awful, even with all those topical issues weighing in the balance. Vocals are hackneyed, the music is unoriginal, and the lyrics are on the nose, or heavy like a thesis statement. And ironically. invoking the memory of both Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynird in the first songs only proves one thing: that Drive-By Truckers had none of the latter's skills as songwriters. What a strange way to unite the two, really... Number of albums left to review: 700 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 148 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 70 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 83 (including this one)

“Three great Alabama Icons” was interesting. Not being for the south a lot was lost in me.

Shittier skynyrd

Liked: Three Great Alabama Icons

I don’t like folk

Kinda boring

Southern Rock for people who already like Southern Rock. Bland lyrics, bad singing, bad mix, okay guitar, bland drums. Not a good album at all.

Endless southern rock but without any if the good bits - avoid.

How this made it onto this list is a mystery. Cliché-ridden hard rock riffs with an equally ‘innovative’ singing style. Played the first track through then skimmed a couple of others. Turgid.

Double albums send the fear through me. Especially an album that pivots around Lynyrd Skynyrd. This wasn't easy on the ear. I didn't think it would speak to me, and I was right. It's beefy and has some decent riffs. But an album telling the story of other albums doesn't really work for me. I'm amazed I made it through to the end. It was an effort.

man these guys really like leonard skin nerd, huh? i didnt like this. the songs were individually bad, and the story of the album wasnt particularly compelling

This album is over 90 minutes long. I started skipping through songs. I struggle with southern rock and I certainly don't need a double album of it. A lot of times it sounded like a knock off of Skynyrd. I understand the irony of the Skynyrd comment given the George Wallace song. I just do not care for this much southern rock. It is better than some of the other 1s on this list but it not really a 2.

Southern and Opera are two words that i never want to be associated with something i have to listen to and this album justifies that predisposition. I'd like to know who listens to this and gets such frothy knickers that they listen to it all the time and have to go and see this live? I couldn't work out if it was a joke or not. if it is then it isn't very funny, but then doing 20 tracks is mega lolz.

Muderering prostitutes on the highway. What a life. I miss doing it so much. So many people died and i just didn't care one bit. I tell you what guys and gals, I'm going to fire up the engine and go out murdering right now, just for the memories. Watch out! Especially those of you with spina bifida. That's my kind.

Not unlistenable but wow it never ends… and not always sure its taking the mickey or earnest in intent. What is for sure I couldn’t take hearing Lynnyrd Skynnyrd namedropped one more time by the end of it

Frekar leiðigjarnt. Með Lynard Skynard á heilanum.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

I really didn’t dig it

Complete crap. Just total horseshit that I want nothing to do with.

Not for me. 1/5 stars.

A me niente proprio.

This doesn't even deserve the keystrokes. So, I'll just share what my friend Joel (a Southerner from Kentucky) had to say when I texted him: "It's bullshit. There is nothing wrong with your cultural perspective. It's "roots" or "Americana" inspired garbage by dudes who really want to tap that vibe, but just can't. Just because I'm Appalachian doesn't mean I'm worth a shit when it comes to that kind of music. Every asshole in that band looks like they went back in time and bought out the clearance rack at Structure."

Just could not listen to this while I worked. Do not like the vocalist's voice. Otherwise just basic southern rock chords

I tried. I just can't.

There's not really anything here to like or dislike, I found the whole thing entirely unremarkable. It's there, it's doing its thing, it isn't interesting me at all. I had to keep reminding myself to listen.

Not my favorite. Some of the songs did have the same beat. The talking points in between the songs were a little distracting for me

Just more bad country music. Couldn't get me to stick around to figure out the Opera part

The worst parts about classic rock, men who think they can sing, and men who love classic rock. The least terrible part was the spoken word song

Very much not my thing. And an hour and a half of it to boot. Definitely could have been refined and edited down to 45 minutes or split into two separate albums. Had to skip some of the tracks. The combination of the awkward lyrics with the awkward singing made it almost painful. The Southern pride thing comes across in a way that I find alienating. Feel like much of the content of this album could be handled musically in better hands, but the way they do it, it's like they're trying to collage 2 books together into an album (sometimes even a song) and it just comes across as ham fisted. Half the album wants to be a history lesson about Alabama and Southern culture and the other half is like this short story collection of tales of gritty wild life and being a musician in the South. Trying to do too much at once. I get they're trying to be raw and honest but it just comes across as unrefined and self indulgent.

Boring, generic folk-rock album. Call me a snob, but this is the first one I don't even understand how it could fit to 1001 albums to listen to before you die. And jeez it is 20 songs of boredom, i might not listen to it the whole way through... Giving up at "Women Without Whiskey", could not care less.

Hated it
