Harddd pass on this one. Another one of the "why is this album on the list" albums. Not sure what is redeemable about it. I guess it sounds sincere, but it doesnt sound good. I cant sing, and neither can the vocalist of the band.

its like a watered down, surface-level observation on race issues with bad beats. in my list, there were plenty of albums that have expressed it with a lot more passion, depth and musicality, so this album is just weird
also whats up with racial affirmation ASMR in the middle of a music album?

i was really excited to check out frank ocean, i heard a lot about him. and then i tune into this album and Im just confused? is there something i missed, some joke or is this a wrong album? it genuinly sounds like a first demo of an album, i mean, fuck, there is a song titled Crack Rock??? what the fuck is this shit?? this is awful even for 2012 jesus christ. flacid boring instrumentals like im listening to a dream pop album and out of tune whacked out vocals

Pleasant, inoffencive - if a bit plain - album.
Kraftwerk
3/5
Interesting album, if a bit repetitive. Thanks for synthpop, Kraftwerk.
The Isley Brothers

Funky, slightly interesting, dont like the vocals
Joan Armatrading
1/5
This genre of music is not for me, but if I were to give my personal feelings about it, it would be as follows: extremely boring, safe, consumerism music that has a decent vocalist behind it, and its unimaginative and repetitive. She can sing, thats about it. So far the only album Ive actually did not manage to listen to fully, because it was so mindnumbing.
The Byrds
1/5
Previously I complained how the Joan Armatrading album was some really boring and repetative jam. It still is, but Id rather listen to her entire discography 10 times in a row, rather than hear another The Byrds album, which is soulcrushing, as I know there are like 4 more of their shit here?
Its an offensive album that doesnt respect its listener. I couldnt care less about how influental it was then, but now it just wastes your time. There might be an interesting song idea in a song, but it is never developed, its just the same shit repeated over an over again, sometimes with a fucking jet engine roaring into your ear. The "psychedelic" part of the album remind me of when I begun learning guitar, and discovered I can make funny and random noises with it. Well these guys made an entire fucking album out of this. And its not good. Its random, but it doesnt sound like the guy can even play guitar properly.
God I wish I could turn back time to never hear this shit again.
I recommend anyone who stumbles onto this to listen to something good, like Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It. Actually a good album.
Beastie Boys
3/5
Couple of nice banger songs, mostly kinda meh.
Orbital
1/5
Just plain boring and extremely repetitive. Seems to be a common trend among these "top albums". If I was fucked up on acid, I would probably enjoy it, but Im pretty sure I would enjoy 99% of all things in the world, so thats not a high accolade. The songs are too long, they dont progress and evolve the idea, its just really fucking boring.
R.E.M.
3/5
Seems like Radiohead got quite a bit of inspiration from REM. Its not bad, its quite alright, some songs are very musically pleasant to listen to, some not so much, some lyrics are nonsensical and just make their respective song sound like filler.
Supertramp

Red Hot Chili Peppers
2/5
The beginning of the album was quite decent, but the entire second half made me want to boil lead and pour it down my throat.
Klaxons
1/5
Generic, consumer friendly, brit-pop rock or whatever. The sounds dont make me want to finish it, so thats a +1 star.
It does sound like the most regurgitated album I have heard on this list so far, and its definitely not "have to listen to!" material.
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
2/5
Every song sounds the same, but the trombone sounds nice.
Iggy Pop
1/5
Just didnt care.
Simon & Garfunkel
1/5
dont care for guitar strum-alongs, just not for me
Neneh Cherry
1/5
I dont think there is a single redeemable thing about this album. It most definitely is the worst album I have heard on here, and it probably would top the charts of my all-time worst albums I have ever heard. Nonsensical lyrics, funny sounds in mixes, the flattest and cringiest beats and instrumentals that would make an average contemporary producer "take a trip to Belize", if you catch my drift.
Im going to go on a limb here, and guess that Mrs Cherry is a nepo-baby, and her daddy gave her some cash to make this pile of waste, cause she wanted to prove to everyone that she got something special.
Sheryl Crow
1/5
This album is an equivalent of a two old dry burger buns with a piece of old, moldy, mild cheddar slice in between them.
Completely worthless.
At least this list keeps surprising me with new flavours of "bad".
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
Such a huge difference between an album with ideas, written and recorded by actual musicians vs some shlock made in a shed.
Its a nice, classy, jazz album, which I think warrants at least a couple of more listens to appreciate it more.
Just for myself, Im going to leave a note of album totals:
Significant albums 10/25.

Very modern-sounding for 1976, which is a great sign of how innovative it was at the time. Its nice, chill, ambient electronic music, not particularly adventurous, but decent nonetheless.
Dion
1/5
Questionable lyrics aside, this record doesnt provide anything of value to the listener. Its boring, strum alongs that are very repetitive.
Jimi Hendrix
2/5
A lot of songs start off with strong instrumentals, but they just repeat the same idea without going further. Solos are interesting. Vocals are very samey and they sound like they were recorded at a concert with the amount of "yeah baby!"s in it. Historically significant, but doubt Id listen to it ever again.

Portishead

Finally an album I would be happy to add to my library.
Never heard of Portishead before, but it was a very plesant album. Very nice and crunchy beats, atmospheric instrumentals, hauting vocals. Gets a bit simple by the middle, but has a very strong finish.
I am not certain as to the significance of the album, but it was exciting and interesting to me today, so must have been quite special in 1994.

Harddd pass on this one. Another one of the "why is this album on the list" albums. Not sure what is redeemable about it. I guess it sounds sincere, but it doesnt sound good. I cant sing, and neither can the vocalist of the band.
Bill Evans Trio
1/5
Quite a miserable listening experience. It sounds like Jazz x Jazz for Jazz musicians. Continuous atonal wankery for the sake of wankery. No structure, no interesting drum-work, just constant piano and bass solos. And it doesnt go anywhere.
Even some of the more obnoxious albums on here had something going. I could, for instance, recommend the Klaxons to someone that likes pop rock, or Neneh Cherry to someone who longs for 80s pop (I consider both these albums to be the worst albums I have heard in my life, quite frankly), but this?
I suppose, as I said in the beginning, it might be interesting to Jazz musicians, but its unlistanable to 99.9% mortals, and its not even entertaining as a "wowza groundbreaking!" album either.
Adele
2/5
I am impressed someone managed to write an album with every single song being about heartbreak. Is there anything else going on in Adeles life? I thought that's Taylor Swifts thing.
The instrumentals were nice, a bit safe for my liking. Adele can sing, and she does so extremely well, but it gets samey fast. Lyricism is decent, but as I said earlier, its all heartbreak songs. Id love a song about long drives across the country, or what she thinks is a perfect breakfast, or anything else but love, actually, Id give a point just for that.
John Grant
2/5
Quite similar to a couple of latest albums, in a sense that there is nothing innovative or particularly interesting going on. Its just an album of songs, which have something in common. In this case, it is awful lyricism and bad flow/pacing, like he needed to do 1-2 more revisions of the songs but decided to ship it like that.
The song where John feels he is allowed to say various offensive slurs because as a gay man he has been wronged by religion and his upbringing is an interesting one. And not in a good way. This was recorded in a studio, with dozens of people participating in it, and not a single one said "hey John, maybe lets not do this one"?
Instrumentals are decent enough and I didnt particularly dislike the album.
Significant albums 13/34.
Albums I liked 7/34.
Albums I have added to my library 1/34.

Jefferson Airplane
3/5
Actually not a horrible album. However he majority of the songs are repetative and boring as hell. But there are a couple of nice gems that are decent, usually when the female vocalist joins in, makes the sound significantly more diverse than 99% of other psychedelic rock bands.
The Cars
2/5
Sounds contemporary, in a way that it seems a lot of pop-music got inspired by it, and its the type of contemporary music I despise, safe, boring, painfully obvious. Lowkey gave me a headache too.
Every song I had to double check the date of release, because it sounds like it would be released 15 years later than it actually was, so I suppose its significant enough. Cant be asked to check tho, it was very boring.
Significant albums 15/36.
Albums I liked 7/36.
Albums I have added to my library 1/36.
Significant, didnt like, didnt add.
Previous album tho, cause I forgot - Jefferson Airplane - significant, didnt like (except a couple of songs), didnt add.
Drive-By Truckers
1/5
Hilariously bad. At some point I gave up and decided to listen to "most listened" tracks, one of which was Zip City. And I immidiately got hit by the 4 most basic guitar chords people learn day 1.
Its so bad its actually funny.
The guy that was making the list was super fucking high to decide that this is a "very important album".
fIREHOSE
1/5
The production is fucking horrible, the mixing is awful, druming sounds boring, drum solo songs are whack, bassist is trying to hard to be quirky and interesting, but he is a bassist, guitar is flacid and lame., vocalist sounds like an angsty nerd.
Good time for a reminder that this list (not the website, godbless ya) was made by some random fucking guy.
This album is piss.
Little Richard
3/5
Sound energetic and exciting, but is on a repetitive side. Little Richard can definitely sing, and it is enjoyable on most songs. On others its a bit of a miss at times. It was kinda fun tho.

Gimmicky, forgettable album. So forgettable I had to remind myself what songs are there on the album other than the "coconut" song. Peaks at rhyming "each other" with "each other" about 4 times.

Musically curious, might have even been a 3 or a 4, but the guy cant sing for shit. It is genuine and emotional at times, but so out of tune. Id be interested in hearing a rerecording after the vocalist got better, because he certainly did, didnt her?

Really enjoying jazzy influences in hip-hop albums. Never checked out Kendrick before this, but he has a similar vibe going as does Tyler The Creator. Really enjoyable, though some songs in the end were a bit meh when compared to how the album started. Strong finish tho.

The Killers
3/5
Ah, the Mr. Brightside album. Its a nice enough pop-rock album, nothing to hate really, but apart from a handful of songs, nothing stands out, and even then, they arent too exciting. Its also kinda debatable from the "important albums" stand point.
On spotify, first 5 songs have 100s of millions of listens, while the last 6 barely break 40 mil. Thats a well enough indicator that there isnt much going on in the second half of it, it just starts sounding quite samey.
Significant 20/53, no

As soon as I saw the album cover I knew I was in for a glorious treat. Yet another bunch of British guys doing what the do best, guitar strum alongs with exciting lyrics, interesting guitar passages and explosive beats.
A fascinating, enthralling experience from start till end. I was completely charmed from beginning till finish. A very welcome change from all other British pop-folk-psychedelic albums of 1960-1980 from the conception till climax. They truly made something. They sat down and wrote songs and created some musics. I was on the edge of my sit from the onset till termination.
Every new song made me feel feelings and experience emotions. Every emotion made me feel things and every feeling made me emotional. From the inception till conclusion.

I really like metal and most of its derivatives, extreme/harsh vocals are usually a plus, heavy and groovy guitar riffs are also a plus. How exciting to be given an opportunity to listen to some of it, with tribal/aboriginal influences!
Sadly it sounded good only on paper. Riffs arent particularly groovy, there is little technicality other than power chords and guitar-dissonance-bends. Percussion in some songs was kind of boring, and the tribal parts of it didnt mesh well with the rest of the songs.
Lyrics and vocals are the part where this album really falls apart. I appreciate that the album was made like 30 years ago, but its so dated. Low-quality poetry and somehow even lower quality fry screams and abysmal false chord screams. Sometimes Id see a music video from an underground band with like 15 views and awful production, but their vocalist sounds so much better. I guess thats just his technique, but its definitely not for me.
I dont care much for nu-metal, but if I did, Id just listen to Korn or something, which did the same thing but a lot better.
Overall, just not a pleasant listen, but I really wish it was. Suppose aboriginal influences make it stand out a bit more.

Man, what is this album?
I wanna talk to myself about two things that are of note with this list. I generally dont know anything about the next album, and I dont read reviews/wiki, I jump straight into it. I prefer to form my own, unfiltered opinion, and maybe afterwards there are things that could alter some parts of it.
The second thing is that the vast majority of the albums I listened to from here were very mediocre at best. By my own stats, I didnt care for 38 out of 60 albums so far, and I have added only 2 to my library. Sometimes I wonder if this fact affects how I feel about the next record. If I probably will not like it, will this idea actually make me more likely to not like the album?
With some degree of confidence, I think I can safely say "no". Because when I first saw this album - as mentioned previously, I dont look any info up - I thought "hm fuck is this shit, hope its not too awful". Then I started listening to it.
First track was instrumental, and I assumed thats how the rest of the album would go, but that didnt bother me. Which is surprising, because I am quite lukewarm about instrumental albums/music. There are some genres that I prefer, like witchhouse/EDM, but generally, I dont particularly care for just electronic/instrumental stuff. So why did it not bother me? Why did I like the first song? Why did I listen to the entire album in one sitting, enjoying every song? How is it different from all other ones?
I dont know. But this album is really fucking good.

I was considering just leaving these actual lyrics from actual songs in here just by themselves, as they say a lot about the quality, but it wouldnt be fair to the music. The instrumental are quite nice, they sound punky, ramonesey, there is energy behind them. Some song progressions are nice, some solos are cool. The lyrics and vocals tho? Shiiiet, why bother? If its your fourth album, and these are the lyrics you are coming up with, just give up man.
Most importantly, its most definitely not an important you really have to check before you croak. If you dont like punk like this, you arent going to get anything out of it, and if you, there are hundreds of bands that did it better, before and after this record.

I have a lot of thoughts about this album. Is bad musicianship actually bad musicianship if its intentional? Evidently, there are sparks of talent and decent sounding parts.
I also think that this is probably one of the most polarising albums on this list. I can easily see how people can and do hate it, because it is an incoherent mess, key changes and tempo/time signature changes are for no purpose other than "because its kewl", and its somewhat of a pretentious hipster drivel that isnt going anywhere. I can see how someone can love it, because its a very unorthodox attempt at making something as far from mainstream rock/pop as it can be. Ultimately, music is art, and art is supposed to illicit emotions. But was the purpose of this album to illicit confusion and annoyance?
I think, from "artsy" perspective, this can be compared to a Pollock painting. Most will say "its a mess" and question the sanity of people praising it, and people praising it will see some value in it, seeing some emotion in it, perhaps reflecting whatever they want to see from themselves.
Ultimately, the question to me was "do I wanna listen to it again?", and the answer is a very confident "no Im good".

Its weird to jump into albums blind, because when I first listened to this shit, I fucking hated it. Boring, spoken word poetry over mediocre, hushed music. And its some Christian/Religious concept album. Fuuuuck that.
But apparently the guy was dying, and while suffering from pain in his living room, he recorded this as a sort of "final word" to god and life. I respect this.

boring and uncreative. the vocalists voice is weak and simplistic, +his rhymes are whack, guitarist learned how to do one thing and does it on every song throughout the entire song - extremely one-dimensional. bass and drums - well they exist i suppose.
it was evident that it is a debut album. its just the same song sung 12 different ways.
I guess the lyrics arent THAT bad. its punk, so its politically charged, but when everything else in the song is mediocre, its kind of hard to try to decipher the message

quite bland musically, quite bland lyrically, couple of nice bangers that are relatively nostalgic, but they are genuinly alright. its not a bad album, but its not good, and its definitely not significant enough to be considered "blabla one of the greatest", its just a generic pop "punk". nothing in the world of music would change if this album didnt exist.

A lot of people have and will argue that "this album is considered to be a critical success only because Bowie died, without his death, no one would care!". Well, yeah, the entire point of the album is how Bowie accepts his inevitable demise and uses it to produce his final record.
Its pretty decent, with Blackstar and Tis a Pitty She Was a Whore being the weakest tracks on the album, but it picks up and stays hard and solid until the end.
Even if musically you may not like it, there is something haunting about anticipating death and creating something for the very last time, especially for an artistic person such as him.

Serge Gainsbourg

Mediocre. French whisperings into your ear, while jazzy instrumentals are playing. Not exactly groundbreaking.

funny to listen to the first time, but id be totally okay never checking it out again. maybe once more in like 20 years?

this is unironically redneck-country "my wife left me for another man and i sleep under the stars" lol
NNN
Bee Gees
1/5
I usually try to at least listen to the entirety of the album, but I got really bored by the 4th song. I really dislike how the vocalist(s) overuse vibrato in songs. Other than that my life has been completely unaffected by this album.
NNN
The Doors

decent, rocky-country vibe going on, if im ever in the mood for that, id listen to it again (ill never be)

its not bad, and has flashes of greatness (and not so greatness), but im overall not much of a fan of stoner-rock or w/e the genre is

Ute Lemper
2/5
I dunno it was really boring and I just wanted to move onto a different album. Vocals are good, but they are the only thing of note here. But they arent used to tell an interesting or compelling story.
Nnn
Janelle Monáe
2/5
there is a lot going on, and not much of it is exciting or interesting whatsoever. she is a very good singer, but that doesnt make the album universally good. halfway through the album i thought to myself "i already dont remember a single thing from any previous tracks", so chances are i will forget this album has existed alltogether by the day after next

Taylor Swift
1/5
I was actually excited to give a Taylor Swift album a proper listen, but dear god did it dissapoint.
Not only it is mediocre and repetitive, it is more than one hour long! What for? Its all the same! There are a couple of nice bangers here and there, but they definitely are not anything groundbreaking. This album is equivalent to chewing gum in nutritional value. Boring, average instrumentals to support Taylors voice, which is great, but every song is about the same thing, I stg Taylor needs a therapist ASAP.
Anyway, this is nothing interesting for 2014, its like the safest, mass-consumtion-largest-target-audience PRODUCT, not art. Completely unsignificant in terms of larger artistic landscape. And its not bad, but its nothing special.

overall it was alright, im not a super big fan of new wave and the way the bass and synths sounded in the 80s (and drum machines. come to think of it i hate most of the instrumentals). but it would be silly to deny significance of this band.
spotify also played Mad World by them automatically after this album, and it sounded weird af, plus made me feel very uncomfortable knowing it actually is the original

if we are putting things from 2018 onto the list, they better be fucking amazing. last two decades were shattering borders, allowing everyone with an ounce of talent and hard work to become famous, never before was it so easy to find new music to enjoy and never before was it so easy for musicians to release it.
and this aint fucking it, the music is just really fucking boring, plain, empty, begging for more metaphorical musical juice in the mix, its just boring boring BORING bored i am bored listening to this. props for having two versions I guess?
