Popular Reviews

An interesting album to be featured on this list. This album offers almost nothing, but is a very peaceful listen. I don't think anyone would actually listen to this without doing some other activity concurrently. Since it has the element of deliberately naming it self background music, I think the album does an incredible job at that.

Celebrity Skin by Hole

Finally listened to the Hole album haha! Kick ass lead vocals and grungy tunes. Nothing to dislike here.

Chore of Enchantment by Giant Sand

This album thinks it's way cooler than it is. Vocals ruin it for me.

16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens

Never heard of this band but I liked the album a lot!

War by U2

U2 just doesn't do it for me. There were actually some pretty good songs on this album which made it tolerable.

One of the greatest albums of all time. Needs no explanation.

Who's Next by The Who

More electronic... this one was more bearable than some of the others on the list. I enjoyed that there were music elements and that it wasn't super repetitive.

From Elvis In Memphis by Elvis Presley

Amazing album, not quite as good as OK Computer. Excellent songwriting. 4.5

Jan 30 2024

Another band on the list of stuff I've been meaning to listen to. Now that I've listened to it I still feel the same way. This album was not very eye opening.

Maxinquaye by Tricky
Jan 31 2024

Very strange sound. Some parts of this album were pretty repetitive. The vocals didn't do much for me. I thought the album was gonna be much better when I started hearing some distorted guitar, but then it just fell back to the same repetitive lo fi groove.

Group Sex by Circle Jerks
Feb 01 2024

Thought the length of this one was unique. I was able to listen to it 5 times in one sitting. Musically some of the songs were funny too which was nice

Feb 02 2024

Overall did not enjoy this one. Tainted Love is the only redeeming quality for me. It was too long and too monotone.

Feb 03 2024

I don't get the hype. Apart from Bohemian Rhapsody there aren't many good songs on this record. It feels like a mix of songs with no clear theme

Frank by Amy Winehouse
Feb 04 2024

Not a fan of her voice. The music was not that exciting either.

Hail To the Thief by Radiohead
Feb 05 2024

Not Radiohead's best work but not bad compared to most of the other albums on this list so far. 3.5

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Feb 10 2024

His voice is as smooth as silk. Very funky, and an enjoyable listen.

Feb 12 2024

Really interesting project. I enjoyed all of the variety. At moments I thought the album was over, but then I checked and realized it was still the same album playing. Only note is that it was very long.

Seventeen Seconds by The Cure
Feb 13 2024

Still not super into the Cure. Musically it's not very interesting. Usually pedaling on two chords for most of the songs. Vocals still aren't that appealing to me either

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
Feb 14 2024

Not a very memorable album. Felt very much like I was being rick rolled the whole time.

Feb 17 2024

This was pleasantly funky and fun to listen to. I enjoyed the interview at the end of the extended version.

Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane
Feb 19 2024

Her voice is perfect for psych rock. I've never listened to the whole album, but I was very pleased. The male vocalist's voice was a tad underwhelming.

This one needs no explanation. It is way ahead of it's time and one of my favorite albums of all time.

Happy Trails by Quicksilver Messenger Service
Feb 21 2024

Awesome concept album. Ahead of it's time!

After taking a class on Miles I was hesitant to willing listen to this, but I'm very pleased with this record. Amazing instrumentation and composition.

The Sensual World by Kate Bush
Feb 25 2024

Not my cup of tea. Standard 80s feel, nothing groundbreaking was done on this album.

Made In Japan by Deep Purple
Feb 26 2024

Step In The Arena by Gang Starr
Feb 28 2024

Good record, also new to me. I had never heard of the artist before.

Architecture And Morality by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
Feb 29 2024

This album almost put me to sleep. I was not a fan. Very boring musically.

Roots by Sepultura
Mar 01 2024

New to me. I really loved this one and can see why the album is called Roots. Intense metal fusion!

British Steel by Judas Priest
Mar 02 2024

Classic metal album from one of the greats. Such an iconic album cover!

Music by Madonna
Mar 03 2024

She really thought she did something here. She had the gall to call this album music then release the most lukewarm pop album ever with cringe 2000s effects.

Fishscale by Ghostface Killah
Mar 04 2024

Great hip-hop/R&B album. I liked it more than I thought

Meat Is Murder by The Smiths

Mar 07 2024

I liked this one more than Rain Dogs. Overall great swampy blues.

Traffic by Traffic
Mar 08 2024

Musically ahead of it's time, but not super interesting. Gives me the same vibe as Cream, but not quite as good without Clapton.

Blue by Joni Mitchell
Mar 09 2024

Had to look this one up on YouTube. Besides the multiple advertisements in the middle of the album I liked this one a lot. Too bad it's not on spotify :(

Parallel Lines by Blondie
Mar 10 2024

Full of classic radio hits. I haven't listened to this in a while.

Elvis Is Back by Elvis Presley
Mar 11 2024

This was the best of the Elvis albums I've listened to so far. The first half was good then it went downhill from there. Not a big fan of the music, but I can tolerate listening to it.

Mar 12 2024

Good record. I don't know if I would go out of my way to listen to this as it doesn't do that much for me.

New to me. The instrumentation was good but the vocals were annoying at times. I'm not mad at it, but I wont go out of my way to listen.

25 by Adele
Mar 16 2024

Many hits on this. Overall a good listen.

Mar 19 2024

Turns out, the more you repeat the same phrase over the same beat, the song doesn't get any better. Not an enjoyable listen whatsoever.

Aqualung by Jethro Tull

Mar 27 2024

Pretty good album, longer than I would like. Some of the songs were rather boring.

Medúlla by Björk
Mar 28 2024

Interesting concept that I can appreciate, but musically confusing and directionless. I enjoyed some of the layered vocals, but most of the others were very cheesy and annoying.

Mar 29 2024

This album was pretty easy listening. I enjoyed the music, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to many songs. Reminds me of the Artcic Monkeys if they were around in '85.

The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses
Mar 30 2024

Interesting light psych feel. I enjoyed this one!

Ingenue by k.d. lang
Mar 31 2024

This one suprised me. It was so relaxing to listen to. Her vocals harmonies are amazing and the songwriting was exciting. It feels inspired by Heart.

All Directions by The Temptations
Apr 01 2024

Good funk project. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure that I would go back to it.

Sign 'O' The Times by Prince
Apr 02 2024

I liked this album more than other prince records I've listened to, but I still am not a fan. I dislike how sexual a lot of his lyrics are, it's borderline gross.

Some good songs on this album. I've never heard of the artist before. It felt like a slightly heavier radiohead album.

Paris 1919 by John Cale
Apr 05 2024

Pretty mundane album overall, nothing too exciting here and a pretty short record.

Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz
Apr 06 2024

Enjoyed this one, was very relaxing and easy to love. I had heard a few songs before this, but now I know the origins!

Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz

Some very catchy songs on this album. Great guitar work and songwriting.

The Clash by The Clash
Apr 08 2024

Good, but not my style. Can't see myself going back to this one.

Arrival by ABBA
Apr 09 2024

Good album to listen to if in need of being cheered up. Happy sounding dancy beats and lyrics to match. Good songwriting.

Destroyer by KISS
Apr 10 2024

Apart from Detroit Rock City this album was pretty middle of the road. Nothing to monumental happened during it's short run time.

Nixon by Lambchop
Apr 11 2024

Very soft and silky while also relatively engaging. I was thrilled that it wasn't a boring listen. Seems like fancy dinner music.

Nowhere by Ride
Apr 12 2024

Musically bland, and brittish :(

Innervisions by Stevie Wonder
Apr 13 2024

Very soothing and interesting. I liked the use of interesting chord progressions which made the album feel like a soulful journey. 3.5

Suprised I've never listened to this one in full. Full of good songs, and a little more rock n' roll than other queen albums which I liked.

Good, but not my style. It was a little too sleepy for my liking.

Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Apr 20 2024

Smooth. I enjoyed the use of many different time signatures.

Street Signs by Ozomatli
Apr 21 2024

This album was stylistically interesting with latin rock, middle eastern melodies, and rapping. I enjoyed the cover of Waiting for the Bus by ZZ Top.

Punishing Kiss by Ute Lemper
Apr 22 2024

Spooky and theatrical. I liked it, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it

At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash
Apr 23 2024

Such a great performer. This is an awesome set in an interesting location.

Apr 26 2024

U2 just doesn't do it for me. There were actually some pretty good songs on this album which made it tolerable.

Apr 27 2024

I thought this album was pretty bland overall. I wasn't very impressed, and I've definitely heard better from both artists on their own.

Djam Leelii by Baaba Maal
Apr 28 2024

A very long project. The instrumentals were mostly interesting, but at times they were repetitive. The vocals were good, but unfortunately I couldn't understand a word of it.

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
Apr 29 2024

Sounds like I just listened to a man having sex with a trumpet for 45 minutes... intense.

Eliminator by ZZ Top
Apr 30 2024

One of my favorite albums of all time. Cheesy at times, but the riffs are solid and the tunes are catchy. Not to mention the sick album cover.

Crime Of The Century by Supertramp
May 01 2024

This was a good listen but the mixing at times was either too quiet or very loud out of nowhere. I enjoyed the spacy elements and it felt a little like Roger Waters at times

Playing With Fire by Spacemen 3
May 02 2024

They in fact did not sound like they were playing with fire. Long, boring, and too ambient. Only something I would consider background noise, not something to pay attention to.

Henry's Dream by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
May 03 2024

Higher energy than Ghosteen which was a breath of fresh air. Nothing that got me excited while listening to it.

The Atomic Mr Basie by Count Basie & His Orchestra
May 04 2024

Pretty good swing album with a misleading cover. Pretty bold of him to have an atomic explosion on the cover post WW2 and during the red scare. The music was interesting with good playing. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen.

Out of Step by Minor Threat
May 05 2024

Short album and high energy punk. It was a good listen. Not too memorable in my opinion.

May 06 2024

Musically a very good and intricate album. I thought it was wayy to long though.

Station To Station by David Bowie
May 07 2024

Good, but not too memorable. Desperately trying my best to like Bowie

Awesome album, I wish I knew more of his studio work so I could better rate this. Another long album, but this makes sense as it is an actual concert.

Rapture by Anita Baker
May 09 2024

I enjoyed her vocals. The album had a very soft, relaxed feel which I liked. Unfortunately I was interrupted by ads throughout the entirety of the album since it is not on Spotify.

Goofy ass lyrics. This is exactly how I thought they would sound with a name like "Electric Prunes"

Good lofi with some interesting moments.

The Only Ones by The Only Ones
May 12 2024

Overall I liked it, but found some parts cheesy or annoying.

Buffalo Springfield Again by Buffalo Springfield
May 13 2024

Went back and gave this a second listen... and thankfully I did. I liked it a lot and thought it was way ahead of it's time. I specifically liked the horn section on a few parts of the record.

Scott 2 by Scott Walker
May 15 2024

Sorta funny at times but overall cheesy as hell... and sexist to round off the 60s feel. Decent listen overall.

If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears by The Mamas & The Papas
May 16 2024

Great album, with great vocals that feel so nostalgic and so right. California Dreamin' is the star of the show, but the whole album was pretty good.

May 17 2024

Excellent sound for a live album from this time. I liked the music, but I likely won't be going back to listen to this album anytime soon.

Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C.
May 18 2024

Almost painfully 80s. I enjoyed the cover of Walk this Way. Most of the songs were not very exciting to me unfortunately. Won't be going back to listen. I do like the energy of music during this time though, it's clear that they really enjoy making music and give it their all.

Teenage Head by Flamin' Groovies
May 19 2024

Musically was pretty good but some of the lyrics were questionable. Specifically the part about fantasizing about high schoolers. Probably will never go back to listen.

Low-Life by New Order
May 20 2024

Probably one of the best albums I've heard from this genre. I really enjoyed the instumentals, and the lyrics felt more purposeful than other New wave albums I've listened to.

The Chronic by Dr. Dre
May 23 2024

Great 90s Hip hop. My favorite song was The $20 Sack Pyramid. So funny.

Born In The U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen
May 24 2024

Album with many classics, unfortunately most of these were very overplayed for me so I can't fully appreciate them. Perfect timeless songs of the summer. Objectively a great album though.

The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest
May 25 2024

Good hiphop with good beats and some clever lyrics. Don't know if I would go back to listen but definitely wasn't bad. The album had a more chill vibe than most others I've listened to.

Blood And Chocolate by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
May 26 2024

Ehh honestly not exciting. Most songs have the same easy going feel with no variation. He sounds like he's trying to impersonate Tom Petty (keyword: trying). I can see how people could like this though. He's like the Taylor Swift of this genre.

McCartney by Paul McCartney
May 27 2024

Short and sweet without fillers. Great album. I liked how blusey it was.

Be by Common
May 28 2024

At first I thought it would be a cheesy 2000s album, but it got better as I listened. I thought it did a good job at portraying social economic issues within the US and especially challenges that African Americans face. The end was inspiring, and well executed.

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
May 29 2024

At first I thought this album would change my opinion that Nick Cave albums are generally slow and boring. As it progressed, I started drifting into a slumber because it's exceedingly long runtime which smothered my hope of rating this high. The music was good, but like who can listen to this entire thing for fun?

Fifth Dimension by The Byrds
May 30 2024

Very good and musically interesting. I guess I'm a Byrds fan now. The interview for this album was pretty funny too.

Imperial Bedroom by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
May 31 2024

More like Imperial Boredom. Yet again another Elvis Costello album that sounds pretty much the same as the others but slightly more 80s. Not a fan, droned on for me.

Moving Pictures by Rush
Jun 01 2024

An almost perfect album in my opinion but in the scheme of my rating scale on this list definitely deserves a perfect score. Prog rock masters.

At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band
Jun 02 2024

Fantastic musicianship, but for me this was a pretty boring listen. Many guitar solos that kinda droned on, which probably would've been 10x more exciting in person. This felt like more of a jam session than a live show.

The Beach Boys Today! by The Beach Boys
Jun 03 2024

Immaculate vibes, and a short album. Good all around, reminds me of a relaxing day. I don't think it meets the same standards as good vibrations but it's still a good listen.

The Slider by T. Rex
Jun 05 2024

Nothing groundbreaking here. Thought it was an okay listen.

Spiderland by Slint
Jun 06 2024

New to me! I thought this was a very well done album with interesting spooky context. Will be going back to this one.

Copper Blue by Sugar
Jun 07 2024

Pretty simple butt rock, didn't blow me away but there were good moments.

Buena Vista Social Club by Buena Vista Social Club
Jun 08 2024

Honestly loved this album. Very relaxed feel, reminds me of a morning on a vacation.

Basket of Light by Pentangle
Jun 09 2024

Fantasy vibes! I liked the female vocals way more than the male vocals. The overall writing was interesting and engaging. While this is probably not something I would go back to myself I probably will be listening to it with my honey.

Disintegration by The Cure
Jun 10 2024

I'm still not a fan, I don't get the appeal. Whiny new wave, not interesting in my opinion. The music is okay but there's not really anything here that grabs my attention.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Jun 11 2024

One of the greatest albums of all time. Is in my top 5.

The Age Of The Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets
Jun 13 2024

Could not stop checking my phone to see if this was the Arctic Monkeys on autoplay. Pretty good album though, new to me.

Jun 14 2024

Found this one to be pretty underwhelming. Not a whole lot to say here unfortunately.

Stankonia by OutKast
Jun 15 2024

Didn't think this was anywhere near the same standards set by Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. The beats were annoying at times and the verses felt rushed and out of place.

Bubble And Scrape by Sebadoh
Jun 16 2024

POV: you are in a play wrong notes and sing off key challenge and this is your opponent. Interesting album though, the off key notes definitely added to the mystery and weirdness

Vespertine by Björk
Jun 17 2024

Björk still not doing it for me. I found this to be incredibly boring and annoying. Whispering in my ear for about an hour.

Surfer Rosa by Pixies
Jun 18 2024

The album ended before I even realized I was listening to it. I liked some of the songs, but overall not my style.

Kenza by Khaled
Jun 19 2024

Hard to find this album, too bad the only way I could listen to it was through a shotty youtube playlist that was missing some songs. The bass was my favorite part of this album. I thought it was pretty well mixed too. The cover of Imagine was really good too. Can't say I would go back to this one.

Led Zeppelin III by Led Zeppelin
Jun 20 2024

In the grand scheme of this list so far this deserves a 5. Compared to all of the other Zeppelin albums, this might be one of my favorites because it stylistically feels more folk and contry inspired.

Horses by Patti Smith
Jun 21 2024

The storytelling on this album was excellent, which is probably one of the main reasons people love Patti Smith. The style reminds me of Bob Dylan but more punk inspired. I thought the vocals were mixed loud at times and some parts I found annoying. I do think that she definitely brings the passion and the energy that sells her storytelling. The fact that this is her debut album is crazy to me. Great record, but not for me.

My Generation by The Who
Jun 22 2024

This is more one of those rock for the sake of rock albums. Obviously a classic album that I'm happy to be listening to finally, but I don't think anything super special was done. Another debut album that shot them onto the scene to produce some of their greater works years later.

The Renaissance by Q-Tip
Jun 23 2024

Enjoyed this one more than I expected. 70s feel and smooth vocals. Wish I could say more, but I don't remember any of the tracks.

Songs From The Big Chair by Tears For Fears
Jun 25 2024

Some classics on this album. I never got into this style of music, but I can appreciate the instrumentals. Shout and Everybody Wants to Rule the World are great well known songs.

Jun 26 2024

I thought this album was very chill while also managing to stay musically interesting. I enjoyed this one, but probably wont go back to listen to it very often. Reminds me of the Superfly soundtrack which I also enjoyed.

Planet Rock: The Album by Afrika Bambaataa
Jun 27 2024

I found this album to be pretty annoying and not very interesting. I did enjoy that I discovered where the original Renegades of Funk came from though.

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan
Jun 28 2024

Love this style of music. Great voice and feel. Back when singing took real talent and charisma.

Grace by Jeff Buckley
Jun 29 2024

Fantastic album and writing. Great guitar work, and the cover of Hallelujah was incredible. Not one of my favorite albums of all time, but definitely one I've gone back to a few times. In the scheme of this list so far, it deserves a 5 against the competition by my scale.

Young Americans by David Bowie
Jun 30 2024

Ehh not super into it. The change in style with this album was not for the better in my opinion. The instrumentals are interesting at times but overall a snoozer.

Vincebus Eruptum by Blue Cheer
Jul 01 2024

I can see how this album may have influenced the beginnings of heavy metal. The drums especially sound like Bonham at times. Musically interesting for the time it was recorded, but I probably wont be going back to this often.

Appetite For Destruction by Guns N' Roses
Jul 02 2024

Amazing that this is their Debut record. Must've been a surreal feeling to have been so successful right from the start. Fantastic album with many hits that are now overplayed on rock radio to this day.

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison
Jul 03 2024

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. My only apprehension is that it is extremely long. Might have been a better record overall if songs were better selected rather just dumping everything onto this project.

The Rising by Bruce Springsteen
Jul 04 2024

I actually liked this album more than Born in the USA apart from all of the hits that album has. I think this album was more interesting and did a better job at creating that laid back feel his music often conveys.

Hms Fable by Shack
Jul 05 2024

Easy going. Not super into it, but it was good background music.

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen
Jul 06 2024

I thought this was middle of the road music. Nothing offensive, but nothing too great. I could go without listening to a Springsteen record for the rest of my life.

Private Dancer by Tina Turner
Jul 07 2024

Good pop music, not my style. I enjoyed the instrumentals and her voice sounded good most of the time.

If You're Feeling Sinister by Belle & Sebastian
Jul 08 2024

Cool title, not so cool music. I couldn't get behind this one. Good production quality however.

Songs For Swingin' Lovers! by Frank Sinatra
Jul 09 2024

Absolutely love this style of music even though I do not listen to it regularly. There's something so warming about it that draws me in.

Moondance by Van Morrison
Jul 10 2024

Very calming record. It would be good to throw on during a relaxing evening.

Kid A by Radiohead
Jul 11 2024

I know this is an amazing album to many people, but I think it really just has great soundscapes. Overall I thought it was interesting but not something I'd go back to probably.

Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
Jul 12 2024

Good listen, very comforting. He has such a good voice, feels like grandpa telling a story. Although I'm not super into country, this is the type of country I can get behind.

Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder
Jul 13 2024

I really wanted to give this album a 4/5, but as it went on I decided to give it a 3. I think disk 1 is super solid, but then the album gets bogged down by a ton of filler songs on disk 2. Way too long, which led to the loss of effectiveness. Good music, but best listened to in bite sized pieces.

Coles Corner by Richard Hawley
Jul 14 2024

I liked the atmosphere this album had. Felt like modern 50s music which was kinda cool. The cover is also pretty representative of the music in my opinion.

Jul 15 2024

I did not enjoy listening to this. Sounded like a british man rambling on for over an hour. Way too long, and not engaging.

A Girl Called Dusty by Dusty Springfield
Jul 16 2024

I have nothing to say about this really. It is exactly what I expected from a self titled 1964 album. Not bad, and not innovative.

Peter Gabriel by Peter Gabriel
Jul 17 2024

A mess of songs of all different styles. I felt like I was listening to a different album midway through. Apart from the well known Solsbury Hill, there isn't much to remember. Definitely feels like he was trying to find his sound.

Jul 18 2024

I've been meaning to check out Genesis and I feel that this album lives up to the reputation I've heard. I really liked this album, and probably will be going back to listen again. Solid progressive rock album, that sounds of its time.

Junkyard by The Birthday Party
Jul 19 2024

Borderline unlistenable punk made worse by Nick Cave's wild and seemingly drug induced lyrical compositions. I actually thought the music was much more interesting than other punk projects of the time. I think I would need to be in a very specific mood to listen to this album, and it would not be on my birthday. I will say that the music accurately is represented by the album cover.

Jul 20 2024

So far this is my favorite Bob Dylan record I've listened to. I thought it was setup in an interesting way with the split between electric and acoustic songs. His lyrics and storytelling speak for themselves. He is a master of the craft. Favorite song was Homesick Blues

The Coral by The Coral
Jul 21 2024

This album has the heart of the 60s and transports elements of early rock and psych into the unfitting year of 2002. I was suprised by this one. While no songs particularly stood out to me, the sound that they created on this record is a great time piece of the 60s with better production.

The Score by Fugees
Jul 22 2024

Some of the verses on this album are really good, but others are confusing or downright bad. The mix of styles works good at points, but a lot of songs felt out of place on this project. The skits were annoying at times too. Not my style, but I can appreciate early hip-hop.

Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
Jul 23 2024

Was not excited to listen to this in the slightest. I gave it a shot and it lived up to my expectations. All around a boring listen. Sure it is well produced and uses a lot of organ, but it's so whiny and boring in its compositions.

Wild Is The Wind by Nina Simone
Jul 24 2024

New to me, I really enjoyed this one. You can feel the emotion in every song. I thought the album was a little disjointed, but since this is a compilation of excess recordings that makes sense. For what it's worth, these songs are great on their own and I'm excited to hear more.

Chelsea Girl by Nico
Jul 25 2024

I wanted to like this more than I did. I thought the intro to the album would give way to a more profound emotional album that developed in a satisfying way. Instead we got 10 almost identical tracks with the same wishy washy slow vocal and 2 notes per minute played by the band. In the scope of other albums on this list so far I think this suprisingly holds up. Because of that I will consider it middle of the road to allign with my other reviews.

Diamond Life by Sade
Jul 26 2024

At first I thought this would be a terrible album, but it actually has redeeming musicianship. All the songs are very smooth. I likely would've given this album a 2 if it weren't for Smooth Operator and Sally. Sally is definitely the best song on the album with incredible saxophone playing. As a debut album, this is incredible. Props to her, I can see why people enjoy listening.

Different Class by Pulp
Jul 27 2024

Musically average brit-pop with questionable lyrics. Nothing incredible or groundbreaking was done on this record in my opinion.

Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen
Jul 28 2024

Probably one of the most boring albums I've ever listened to. I'm not into singer songwriter, but usually I can tolerate it. This one has great lyrics but musically, this album was halfassed and thrown out the window.

Back In Black by AC/DC
Jul 29 2024

One of the best selling albums of all time for good reason. The ability for this band to bounce back after such a terrible fate of losing a personable a front man is incredible. These songs and riffs were extremely prevalent during my childhood and this album is still nostalgic to all those times playing guitar with my father.

Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Jul 30 2024

I really wanted to like this more than I did. Nonetheless still a great album. The opening track features an amazing emotional solo. The other tracks decrease in effectiveness as the album progresses. I thought the last track was ridiculous with all of the random noises, but then I guess it makes sense in the context of Maggot Brain (like brain rot I suppose).

Hypnotised by The Undertones
Jul 31 2024

More UK Punk/New wave... I personally cannot distinguish a vast majority of these and there are so many on the list. I was pretty underwhelmed. Musically was fun, but for the most part nothing too impressive.

Dance Mania by Tito Puente
Aug 01 2024

Full of bangers. I loved this. Very fitting title.

Dirt by Alice In Chains
Aug 02 2024

I don't even need to listen to this one to give it a high rating. One of the most influential albums of the 90s that conveys such pure and raw emotion. The songwriting and riffs are incredible all around.

Figure 8 by Elliott Smith
Aug 03 2024

I liked the instrumentals on this record even though most were simple. As far as singer songwriter goes, I found this to be relatively interesting. Unfortunately none of the songs were very memorable.

Fear and Whiskey by Mekons
Aug 04 2024

Interesting album, not my style. I frankly hate these punky UK new wave vocals that are running rampant on this list. I thought the compositions were relatively interesting. This album overall had a eerie undertone which I thought was cool, and for that I will rate it middle of the road.

Synchronicity by The Police
Aug 05 2024

Cult classic album with good songs. I can't say it's my style but it's hard to say that this album isn't deserving to be on this list.

The Gershwin Songbook by Ella Fitzgerald
Aug 06 2024

After unknowingly listening to the first 5 discs while tinkering away at work I thought I surely had ventured out of the album and into the spotify suggested playlist. To my suprise, the album was still playing! I am proud to say I listened to the whole thing without giving up, but I can't say I really enjoyed it. My tolerance for this type of music runs out after about an hour then everything blends together and I lose interest. Despite the 3 hour run time, Ella's voice is phenomenal and the songs are well composed for the time. I likely would only listen to this again as background music (for a fancy home cooked meal perhaps)

Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones
Aug 07 2024

Another classic album, one of the best by the Stones in my opinion. It definitely deserves to be on this list.

Play by Moby
Aug 08 2024

Honestly I thought this album was incredibly boring and repetitive. It's like rock for people who either think they like rock or are just getting into it. The vocals were abysmal.

Bayou Country by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Aug 09 2024

Incredible album, and very deserving to be on this list. The title sums up the album perfectly, and the music is still played on radio to this day.

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
Aug 10 2024

Good songwriting and lyrics. Not quite as good as some of the Simon and Garfunkel but a pretty good self titled record. Unfortunately I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this again, but it gets a 4 for my appreciation.

The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground
Aug 11 2024

Overrated band in my opinion. The music wasn't that interesting, but I guess for the end of the 60s they had a good mix of sounds that fit the time. I can see how this could be innovative for the time, but I find it pretty underwhelming when comparing it to other bands of the time such as Pink Floyd.

Searching For The Young Soul Rebels by Dexys Midnight Runners
Aug 12 2024

UGHHHHHHH I am so damn sick of these 80s Brit pop groups. This one was a little more tolerable since the horn section was in action most of the time. Other than that the vocal style makes my ears bleed.

1984 by Van Halen
Aug 13 2024

Incredible album and arguably one of the best Van Halen records. There are at least 3 radio hits on this album alone, and it is a great showcase of EVH's talent.

Aug 14 2024

An interesting album to be featured on this list. This album offers almost nothing, but is a very peaceful listen. I don't think anyone would actually listen to this without doing some other activity concurrently. Since it has the element of deliberately naming it self background music, I think the album does an incredible job at that.

Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction
Aug 15 2024

One of THE classic rock albums that I've never got around to listening to in full. I actually enjoyed this more than I thought. The fact that this is their debut album is also incredible. The sound is familiar but also very original.

xx by The xx
Aug 16 2024

Stripped down indie pop, not much to love here. I do like how extremely loud the bass is on this album. Other than that I can't say any of the tracks are memorable.

Gorillaz by Gorillaz
Aug 17 2024

I have listened to a few bangers off of this album, but never the whole thing. I gotta say that I was a little underwhelmed by the majority of songs on this record. Most were rather boring and felt like fillers. Clint Eastwood and 5/4 just barely carry this album to a 3 for me. However, It is definitely a great record for their first major album.

Water From An Ancient Well by Abdullah Ibrahim
Aug 18 2024

I was excited to listen to this when I saw the name of the album. The jazz was smooth and straightforward. Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy or dislike this one. Another album I would probably listen to as background music. The compositions were pretty good in my opinion and seem politically driven which was interesting.

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake by Small Faces
Aug 19 2024

There's a difference between having goofy music and being annoying, this album is the latter. It has some redeeming qualities from the music. I mean I guess the music does match the style of the album cover. Being from the late 60s is very fitting though.

Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen
Aug 20 2024

I want to be more into this, but I can't get behind it. It's no doubt a good album that has stood the test of time and produced many radio hits, but it isn't for me. I thought it was musically lame, besides the sax.

Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds
Aug 21 2024

I was looking forward to this but I left disappointed. Nothing really was that interesting on this album. I much prefer their later work than the jangly, middle of the road tunes on this record. Good effort for their debut record.

Marcus Garvey by Burning Spear
Aug 22 2024

We finally got a reggae album! This was new to me and I enjoyed it. I thought the instrumentals were good and the atmosphere was interesting at times. The vocals aren't my favorite but that's really my only major criticism. The album is politically charged but is contrasted by the tame instrumentals.

Liquid Swords by GZA
Aug 23 2024

I liked this more than I thought I would. Out of the Wu tang solo releases (even though all of the members are featured it seems) I thought this was the most put together. It had a concept album feel which I liked and the atmosphere was dark and interesting feeling. The verses all flowed smoothly, but the instrumentals were out of time and out of tune. I think that helps with adding to the spooky feel though.

Hard Again by Muddy Waters
Aug 24 2024

One of the best albums on this list so far. I have always been meaning to listen to older blues, but never got around to it. This album is everything I expected and more. I will be going back to this one.

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Aug 25 2024

Absolute masterpiece, arguably Black Sabbath's best album released in 1970 after their killer debut album from the same year. There is not a single bad track. I recently read Geezer Butler's autobiography and found out that the track Paranoid was recorded in the studio on the spot to meet LP length requirements. It ended up being the most popular song they ever did.

S&M by Metallica
Aug 26 2024

While I'm not the biggest fan of Metallica, this is a fantastic live album that adds the interesting musical elements from the SFSO. I was suprised by how much I liked this album. While it is 2 hours, I wasn't bothered by it because the classic metallica songs had the addition of new interesting elements which was cool.

Shake Your Money Maker by The Black Crowes
Aug 27 2024

Such a great album from a band that pretty much was swallowed up by others at the time. These guys were like mystery men releasing many radio hits while all of the bigger artists were dominating the scene. Props to the underdog, these songs can still be heard on classic rock radio today. While I don't think the music is fantastic, there is objective proof that these songs stand the test of time and secure their spot on this list.

90 by 808 State
Aug 28 2024

This felt like I was sitting through a 40 minute unskippable Grand Theft Auto menu cutscene. Some of the songs were upbeat and fun, but for the most part this was boring.

Dr. Octagonecologyst by Dr. Octagon
Aug 29 2024

This is probably one of the cheesiest hip hop records I've ever listened to. I thought the introduction of a lot of science vocabulary was interesting because It's almost never used in rap. Other than that the songs are extremely immature, annoying, offensive, or boring. Nothing remarkable happened. I was actually laughing at points because of the cheesy ass lyrics.

Low by David Bowie
Aug 30 2024

This is a Bowie album I can get behind. I enjoyed the journey through the album and the exploration of other sounds likely due to the Eno collab. I thought the two worked well together and produced something new and interesting instead of recycling the same Bowie formula.

Eagles by Eagles
Aug 31 2024

The first half was pretty good but it declined over the course of the album. Pales in comparison to Hotel California. Nonetheless, radio hits are present on this album. Undoubtedly a valliant debut project for the band.

Toys In The Attic by Aerosmith
Sep 01 2024

Unfortunately not as good as I remember, but a very nostalgic album for me. My mother used to play it all the time and my parrot Dale would headbang to it. 4 for nostalgia, 3 for the music.

Sep 02 2024

I liked the music and beats. The lyrics didn't age well for a lot of these songs. Other than that the length of the album is too long. It felt like a drag at times with not a lot of variation.

Amnesiac by Radiohead
Sep 03 2024

I enjoyed this far more than Kid-A. I'm happy that they released all of their B side tracks instead of scrapping them. This is such an ambient album that stays interesting and emotional. I had to listen to it 3 times before having an opinion on it though.

Dust by Screaming Trees
Sep 04 2024

New to me! I wasn't expecting much going into this as I've never heard of these guys. Although not the best music I've ever listened to, I found this to be enjoyable compared to many other albums on this cursed list. I liked the elements of grunge and psych that are mixed in.

Rising Above Bedlam by Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
Sep 05 2024

I gotta say, I was expecting more shitty brit rock but I was suprised by how different this one was. Although the fusion on this record is pretty surface level, I thought it was interesting and added an extra twist to what probably would've been a pretty boring record.

Snivilisation by Orbital
Sep 06 2024

This is just about the same as listening to my alarm go off for an hour and 15 minutes. This was a pretty excruciating listen for me.

Probably the best Kinks record I've listened to so far. I thought the songs were fun in a weird way while also being pretty straightforward rock. Other than that, I don't think anything revolutionary was done.

Moby Grape by Moby Grape
Sep 08 2024

Sounds like early era The Who with slightly more blues influence. I thought it was a good self titled record, but it didn't really do anything that I found deserving of being on this.

Rings Around The World by Super Furry Animals
Sep 09 2024

I actually thought this record was interesting in that the soundscape was very polar. At one point it would be soft, but then hit with abrasive synths which somehow managed to fit the tracks. Overall pretty good if I was looking for a slow psych listen. Never heard of these guys before.

Sep 10 2024

This just doesn't do it for me. Too much of the same thing for over an hour (Wee wee, womp womp, ding ding). I can see this being a hit in an Irish pub, but listenimg to an entire album was extremely challenging for me.

Let's Stay Together by Al Green
Sep 11 2024

Short and sweet album. I liked this more than I thought I would. The music stayed interesting and upbeat throughout the entire listen.

Triangle by The Beau Brummels
Sep 12 2024

Never heard of these guys before. At first I thought they were trying to be the beatles but then the instrumentation developed a ton over the course of the listen with psych elements. This album gave the typical 60s sound a nice twist and strayed away from the usual formula.

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
Sep 14 2024

Finally got around to listening to this record. It's known as one of the quintessential albums of the genre and likely the beginning of the new wave sound. I thought it was interesting and I can appreciate the production, but for the most part I wasn't too into the music. I can see how this was such a revolutionary record though.

Permission to Land by The Darkness
Sep 15 2024

This album was... interesting. Musically it was very good and up my alley. On the other hand, the vocals did not do this album any justice. I found them extremely annoying and cheesy. They were way too over the top for the music.

Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye
Sep 16 2024

This one was soo smooth and romantic. This definitely has a place on this list. The opening track speaks for itself.

Pearl by Janis Joplin
Sep 17 2024

First Janis Joplin record I've listened to in full. I thought the album was pretty fun, but I can only take so much of her voice before needing to listen to something else. Nothing against her, but this is not my style.

One World by John Martyn
Sep 18 2024

This album definitely has a very specific time and place. Is that time and place in a traffic jam on a few hours of sleep? I can't say it is. It was a very relaxing listen that remained peacefully ambient throughout the entire listen.

Odelay by Beck
Sep 19 2024

Weird album in a good way when mainstream music was more accessible for interesting genres. Not fantastic in my opinion but a fun listen.

Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
Sep 21 2024

I can appreciate this one, but I wasn't really into any of the songs. It sounds like generic 60s soul with pop and psych influence.

Clandestino by Manu Chao
Sep 22 2024

This album was soo good in my opinion. I thought some of the songs were very beautiful and well written. I enjoyed the his nasally yet powerful voice. It really added an extra layer to the music.

Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes
Sep 23 2024

This was probably the most modern 60s album I've ever listened to. Although the songs are pretty long, the music all feels like a bunch of different songs which I can appreciate. I can't see myself going back to this one much though.

Sep 24 2024

Incredibily overrated album. Very few songs were enjoyable and/or memorable, the rest were filler. The album also went on for way too long which made it less enjoyable to listen to.

Berlin by Lou Reed
Sep 25 2024

Not my favorite album, but listenable. There's not much that evokes excitement while listening to this. Middle of the road solo album that's a chip off the old block.

Sep 26 2024

Undeniably an influential album for gangster rap but I wasn't too pleased by it. Although 80s and 90s rap is more up my alley than the modern garbage that's out today, this one wasn't exactly notable in terms of lyrical composition and rhythm. There were some points of the album where I was into the backing instrumentals.

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
Sep 27 2024

First song is an iconic horror movie song that seems to have influenced the horror soundtrack genre in more ways that one. Despite this, the album flops after the first 5 minutes turning into weird groaning unintelligible lyrics that don't fit into the mix at all or various repetitive sounds.

Live At The Regal by B.B. King
Sep 28 2024

Another crazy live album from one of the greats. At times, the music is so good it feels like a studio recording. Everything about it is awesome.

The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan
Sep 29 2024

I thought this album was so incredibly annoying (the vocals, the repetitive synth paterns, and the percussion). Although a moderate album length, this dragged on for what felt like 3 hours. Cars is a classic song, but even that doesn't do it for me. This list has felt more like the 1001 new wave and UK punk albums list of all time instead of the 1001 albums you NEED to listen to.

Sea Change by Beck
Sep 30 2024

I was expecting a mid album, but this one suprised me. I felt that the songs were all full of emotion (Eddie Vedder style vocals) and all fit onto this project. Although the length was a little long, Beck really changed up the formula and did it well.

Natty Dread by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Oct 01 2024

This might be one of the most chill albums of all time. Everything about it was interesting from singing in unison with the harmonica to the smooth background chants that underlied the melody. It's no suprise that Bob Marley is such an idolized figure in the music world.

She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper

Objectively a great 80s pop record. Sadly I can only take so much of her voice. The hits have been played to death on the radio even still today, but that speaks to this album's influence in today's music.

Electric by The Cult

Super generic rock album, it's hard to believe Rick Rubin was involved with this. It annoyed me how much Ian said "Yeah" throughout this record. I also thought the cover of Born to be Wild was notably worse than the original.

Celebrity Skin by Hole

Finally listened to the Hole album haha! Kick ass lead vocals and grungy tunes. Nothing to dislike here.

I wasn't very into the first two tracks of the album then I enveloped in the masterpiece that is 'Four Cornered Room.' The album progressively picks up with slow, soulful, psych rock that reminds me of the modern band Glass Beams if they had vocals.

Oar by Alexander 'Skip' Spence
Oct 06 2024

Not my preferred music of choice, but I thought the backstory of this album was really interesting. The music was pretty bland 60s psych, but the fact that he was super strung out, mentally unstable, able to play all the instruments, and self produce the album is pretty wild. The production is not great and borderline annoying with the percussion being the only thing on the right side track. I kinda felt sick listening to this, but extra points because the art matches his mental state.

Fly Or Die by N.E.R.D
Oct 07 2024

This album was pretty cheesy but I gotta say that they blended genres pretty well which I was not expecting. All of the songs sound a little different and non-cohesive which makes this feel like a playlist instead of an album. Despite this, the contents were pretty dull and not memorable.

Fever To Tell by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Pretty average noisy alternative punk. I thought the vocals were annoying at times, but the music wasn't bad. Thankfully the album was pretty short.

Scream, Dracula, Scream by Rocket From The Crypt
Oct 09 2024

I honestly did not like this album. It doesn't deserve to be on this list at all. It sounds like if Elvis Costello tried to make a heavier punk album. I hate the vocal style, and all of the sounds sound the exact same with annoying tropes.

For Your Pleasure by Roxy Music
Oct 10 2024

I thought the mesh of sounds on this record was interesting, but not incredible enough to earn it a spot on this list. Extra points for how weird it is at times, but overall not that exciting.

Hearts And Bones by Paul Simon
Oct 11 2024

Another long solo album from an artist that's better known as part of a more well rounded group effort. The songs were good, the album was long, and the whole thing just kinda flopped. It all felt like the same pop-fueled thing.

Brothers by The Black Keys
Oct 12 2024

This used to be one of my favorite albums because of the amount of good songs on it. Upon further listening, I think it's a tad boring although there are still many hits on the record. I still enjoy it.

Winter In America by Gil Scott-Heron
Oct 13 2024

I wanted to like this album more than I did. I can't say I remember a single one of these tracks. While listening I know that everything sounded good, but there wasn't really anything to grab onto.

The Next Day by David Bowie
Oct 14 2024

This was such a mundane album. Just because it was written by Bowie at the end of his career doesn't mean this is one of the best albums of all time. This list is increasingly pissing me off with albums from the same hand full of artists that are saturating this list.
