To Pimp A Butterfly
Kendrick LamarNah
Nah
I like this. These guys have a different sound and are amusing as well as musical
Whiney and boring
Kind of dull and flat for my taste
Beautiful
Not really a fan of Dr Suess music. Kind of amusing though
Took me 50 years to finally listen to Velvet Underground thanks to this project and it’s kind of what I expected, loose and out of tune with some interesting moments, just ok for me. I know that they’re a big influence to many of my own influences but it’s really just not my cup of tea.
First time hearing these guys. I like it
Some kind of Electronic/Dance/Hip hop/reggae hybrid. Well done.
Mostly electronic mellow instrumentals fitting for nap time. The two songs that do have vocals have a prehistoric punk rock type of sound. Weird
Big band Swing, Jazz and Blues performed by a master and his orchestra. Smooth, beautiful and amazing
Willie doing a bunch of old pop standards from the American Songbook. Beautiful, ethereal and wonderfully performed like never before with moments that can bring you to tears, a great album.
Pretty good, many different sounds, from medieval pop to blues, not what I expected.Bryan Ferry is a very capable frontman. Some really cool guitar stuff.
Good solid rockin’ live album
Jeff Becks first solo record is great heavy British blues rock. Some amazing guitar sounds, and the Rod Stewart vocals are pretty cool.
My first exposure to Prince. I need a few more listens to better evaluate it., long album. I like some of it and some of it I can’t wait to end. Theres one constant annoyance in that the fake drums are too loud in the mix in my opinion, otherwise pretty good I guess.
This one is kind of strange. Basically singer/songwriter folk music with some nice finger picked guitar. Some of the songs are pretty good and at times have an interesting otherworldly sound. The vocals are a problem for me, his delivery for the most part is fine for the material but at times it can get downright annoying. I may come back to this.
Rudimentary rock, too much screaming and noise for my taste.
Great blues, Muddy Waters featuring Johnny Winter and James Cotton. I was lucky enough to catch the tour to support this album twice. A classic.
Excellent pop/rock album.
This pretty much sucks. Depressive feeling sorry for myself lyrics with lousy cry baby singing (whining)over weak music. Who listens to this crap?
My first exposure XTC. Having a hard time classifying this one. Good vocals backed by orchestrated soft progressive I guess. I like it.
Iconic album, labeled as the birth of Progressive Rock, some great stuff here although”Moonchild” and” I talk to the Wind” tend to put me to sleep. Five stars for originality
Kiddie heavy metal, boy what stupid fucking lyrics even by Metal standards . The playing is decent, they even managed to throw some blues into the mix. Worst thing about it is that the production is pretty lousy, sounds like they’re playing in a cave. I would have loved this when I was 13.
Electronic music suitable for dancing I suppose. Good production, well executed but very repetitious. It’s just not for me.
I must admit this is my first time hearing a Stevie Wonder album. A+ production, writing and performance.
One of the best albums by the Worlds Greatest Rock Band
Great country music from a great country artist
There were a lot of disputes about Metallicas direction when this came out. The songs are shorter and maybe a bit on the commercial side but nonetheless a great album.
My first time listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. I like some of it especially the heavier stuff which is more accommodating to the lousy vocals. I’m surprised I made it through the whole two hours which I guess says something good about it. Cool cover.
The Doors debut album. A classic
Haven’t heard of these guys until now. Sort of sounds like if the Beatles were a punk/garage band at times. Ok rock band I reckon but not something I’d seek out
I remember a couple of these songs being played to death on the radio years ago. Boring kiddie rock.
I got scared when I saw Wilco for the 2nd time only 30 albums in as I hated the first album I listened to. This was a pleasant surprise being a reinterpretation of Woody Guthrie songs by Billy Bragg with Wilco as backing band.
Probably the worst album I’ve ever heard. Is this a joke? Since I started the 1001 this is the first one I had to take off because I couldn’t take it any more
Some kind of alternative I guess. Interesting at times, I like this.
Cool soul music
California country rock. Just ok for me, nothing stands out.
My first exposure to Captain Beefheart. Mixed feelings on this. Although there’s some interesting playing musically on this, there’s also a fair share of noise and the vocal parts can be stupidly annoying at times
I listened to two tracks and took it off. I’m not a fan of this genre but was willing to give it a shot, unfortunately (perhaps fortunately) I can’t relate to these lyrics at all. Too negative and filthy for me
80’s rock with an orchestra. I fell asleep listening to it but what I heard was ok.
I don’t know anything about African music but this is pretty cool
Top shelf R&B/ soul album. I listened to the deluxe edition which included a concert from the Whisky a Go Go in 1968. The studio album was good, probably would have gave it a 4 but the live stuff was really cooking, hence the 5
The Temptations, classic R&B but this album was just ok for me
Excellent folk/rock album. 5 stars for American Pie and Vincent alone and most of the rest is pretty good as well
I’m surprised I’ve never heard of this guy until now. I’m not sure where to go with this after one listen, I need more time with it to give it a fair evaluation. Definitely caught my attention but I need to dissect it some more. Sounds like a soundtrack for a nightmare , a horror house, or a descent into madness. One thing for sure is its one of a kind. I’m going with a 4 for now for creeping me out.
British pop/rock, kind of dull for me
There’s some great songs here and some I can live without. I think it would work better as a single album with some of the filler omitted
My first time hearing this guy. Kind of boring, I’m not really into the whining thing
My first time hearing Bjork, not at all what I expected. I’m impressed
The birth of Heavy Metal and their greatest recording
How this sloppy noise is influential to anyone is beyond me.
Soft jazz/ soul /rock aptly done but not too exciting.
Electronic music, too repetitious for me. Good for dancing or background maybe.
Talking Heads debut album, fun stuff, great early new wave
Commercial jazz/rock. These guys are great players, the recording is crisp and clean but the songs bore the hell out of me
More whiny alt rock. Just can’t get into it
First time listening to a Coltrane album. Although there’s some amazing playing going on here it gets tedious after 20 minutes.
Stupid fucking kiddie metal. Garbage
This album made me want to shut it off but I endured it until the bitter end. Boring
A classic and my favorite Hendrix album.
I like this. These guys have a different sound and are amusing as well as musical
Patti Smiths debut album, pretty cool and original but somewhat overrated
Generic 90s rock. I like some of the slower stuff while some of this gave me a headache
My first time listening to this guy. The lyrics are amazing but the music is kind of repetitive and Cohens singing doesn’t do it for me, he sounds like such a drag, but I guess it’s the writing thats the attraction here
Electronic crap
Generic rock , nothing too exciting here for me
First time listening to Funkadelic. I like some of it, not too fond of the silliness
I haven’t heard this album in 30 years and listening to it now it’s not as good as I remembered
My favorite Pantera album-a new level of confidence and power
Not a big Springsteen fan to begin with but this one is extra dull
My favorite Billy Joel album. Some great songs on this.
Electronic background music. Very repetitious.
Scottish new wave, meh
Good vocals, well backed and great production. Disco was never my thing but I know quality when I hear it.
Great reggae
I have no idea what this film was about and I’ve never heard of Air until now. I suppose this would be good music for a mystery or a supernatural film, I just don’t get what puts it on this list
Annoying off key canaries. Why would I need to hear this before I die?
I haven’t heard this guy before this. Interesting voice and sound, good writer
First time hearing a War album, I’ve previously only had radio exposure to them. Pretty good soul/ rock
More electronic dance music only this time it’s extra boring. Hard to evaluate this repetitious sleep inducer
My first time hearing this beginning to end. Good Doors album.
Original sounding band, I don’t know what kind of music this is trying to be. Not terrible but not for me.
This album reeks of 60s. Some good stuff. I’ve only heard the hits before this.
More Indie/Alt/ Pop music. All these bands sound the same to me. These guys are ok I guess if you like this type of stuff.
Boring
Electronic dance music, this thing is all over the place, African, latin, hip hop? Theres even a hoe down
Peter Gabriels debut album. Good start
A couple of decent tracks along with some noise, screaming and sloppy playing
I couldn’t find a complete edition of this Algerian music. Started off good with a traditional sounding song which was pretty cool but when it turned into a pip album It started to annoy me after the 4th song.
Good solid rock album. Very reminiscent of Bowie.
I usually have no use for punk but I actually enjoyed this. Maybe it’s the sax.
2nd Smashing Pumpkins since I started this gig. Song structure and guitar sound is good although the leads are weak and sloppy for the most part , the drummer is excellent. This would be a lot better if the singer didn’t blow.
I don’t know what this is or who it’s for. It’s like jazz fusion crossed with elevator music. The too laid back vocals and juvenile lyrics just bored the crap out of me. The Bass player kicks ass but he needs a better veichle for his talent
I generally dislike punk but being that these guys actually try to play their instruments it was a lot more tolerable than a lot of the other bands in this genre that I’ve been subjected to . Too bad the recording/mix sucks, I wouldn’t listen to it again
Some kind of Futuristic jazz/rap, pretty cool, great singer
Electronic synth music in French and English, well done but boring and repetitive
Heavy metal infused with a bit of rap. I used to play the hell out of this when it came out. It has aged well
After laying down the rules of Metal with their debut, Black Sabbath released this their second release, easily one of the greatest metal albums of all time, cementing their place as the true inventors of the genre. A favorite of mine for sure.
Amazingly cool live jazz
Good musicians, vocals and harmonies are interesting and well done, but overall it bored the hell out of me
My first exposure to African blues. Pretty cool
More dull Indie music. No wonder I was only buying Metal and blues in the 2000s. Well produced but boring. Sounds like the singers are falling asleep
First time listening to this band. Its ok but a bit noisy at times.
I was ready for another suck electronic album but this is actually pretty cool and interesting. Electronic meets progressive with some Zappa sensibilities
My first time listening to these guys. I like the spooky stuff.
One of Zimmermans best
Psychedelic hippie blues. Not bad but nothing amazing
53 years later I’m finally hearing McCartneys first solo album. Pretty good.
Pretenders debut album. Great start
Standard issue boring punk garage rock
Ok Reggae
Just ok for me, kind of boring
This one holds up better than “In Utero” did. Probably their best album
I can’t relate to the lyrics and find the filthy language stupid and unnecessary
I liked this better than the last Beck album that was generated, it’s not terrible just too dreary for me. Yawn
Classic album
British R&B/ Rap. I usually don’t listen to rap but this isn’t too foul, I actually like some of it.
Motörhead live in England, good stuff
British ska revival 1979, just ok for a few songs
I guess I’m supposed to hear a lot of new wave before I die. Just ok
More new wave to hear before I die, haven’t heard of these guys until now. Nothing distinct but well played.
This is like new age Indian electro pop, good for a couple of songs then the tedium set in
Good 60s pop. “Time of the Season” is all I knew before this. Some nice baroque sounding songs
Another Brit pop/rock indie band. Musicians were ok but song wise nothing really different from its peers, and the recording suffers from poor production
More Brit electro pop. Good for a dance party or something I guess, not really my thing.
Some good stuff on here but ultimately too long and started sounding repetitious towards the end. This hasn’t aged very well
My first time listening to this guy. Pretty good, unique sound though his voice annoys me on some tracks
The Rolling Stones debut is basically a covers album. It being the Stones first recordings is the only thing special about this.
I put this on while I was cooking so I didn’t pay close attention to the lyrics and musically it was kind of dull for me.
Too long, some filler like the long jams that go nowhere can be omitted
Boy George is a much better singer than I remember, very soulful . Great new wave album, still holds up
Electronic middle eastern/ Indian music. Very annoying at times
Made me laugh here and there but not something I would ever listen to again
Brit electro beat. Dull and repetitious
80s hip hop pop. Well done but not really my thing
British indie. Nothing to write home about but this was ok.
Masterpiece. Easily one of the greatest albums ever recorded
First time listening to Eno solo. Pretty cool glam art / progressive
My first Beach Boys album, I’ve only heard the hits before. Great harmonies but everything sounds the same after 3 songs
Great album and my favorite Stevie album off the list so far. Superstition kicks it up from 4 to a 5
Amazing album, my personal favorite Peter Gabriel recording
First time hearing these guys. Pretty good, semi progressive, great production
British pop rock with a sci-fi vibe, ok but nothing amazing here
First time hearing this guy. Good singer, good album
First time listening to these guys. Brit rock/pop , catchy songs, pretty good
I can’t relate to this, it’s like music for criminals
British silly music, some nice guitar in spots, not something I would listen to again
Good album
Some good songs, great harmonies, very hippie
Fire and Rain. Great album
First time listening. Amazing
I tried, just can’t relate
Super smooth , mellow and cool. Beautiful voice.
Beautiful ambient music, great for relaxing or meditation. Allegedly the first of its kind so it gets a 5 for that landmark.
Great live set
Boy did I hate this, the production is horrible, every song is a big glob of noise with no separation between the “singer” and the instruments -one big wall of suck, gave me a fucking headache. Sounds like somebody bought a shitload of pedals and effects and never took the time to learn how to operate them. They call this guitar innovation?
Being a real metal head in the 80s I dismissed most new wave because it lacked guitar and was getting jammed down my throat constantly on the radio and MTV. Now giving this a fair listen I find it’s a pretty good recording. Great bass player.
Classic live album
I get nothing from this absolute noise
Better than I thought it would be but Cobains voice got annoying after a while
Nope. Bands like this is why I took up listening to Metal in the 80s. Not terrible just boring
The 4th Stevie Wonder album I’ve listened to in this project, and the music is top notch once again
One of my favorite albums,?I’ve listened to this hundreds of times, probably the best from this variation of the band, I was even fortunate enough to catch the tour for it at Madison Square Garden. I love it.
Great ZZTop album. Minus a star for succumbing to 80s synth and drum machine cliches
Great
Good album
I love Sinatra and the songs are good but this is just too much melancholy gloom for one listen so it gets to be a drag after a while. 3 + Extra star for Nelson Riddle arrangements
Weak rudimentary rock
Apt title. Swinging jazz and blues with a heavy dose of humor. Very entertaining.
Catchy Brit electro pop with good 60s style vocal harmonies, an original sounding group
Only up to 168 and already 4 Talking Heads albums. Do I really need to hear all of their stuff before I die.
Good live blues from B.B.
British new wave electro pop, gets boring after a few songs
Noisy punk, bad production, lousy vocals
First time hearing this artist, hadn’t heard of her until this. Good writer, great voice, cool Brit folk music
I like some of this , not too crazy about the vocals. Has a kind of prog/ psychedelic feel
There’s a lot of abuse for this album for some reason, meanwhile it’s impressive just for the fact that he’s playing all the instruments on it and playing them well. Good commercial 80s rock.
Psychedelic 60s , some of it is ok,some of it blows, all of it sounds dated
Classic recording , my favorite Who album and arguably their best
Nice voice, dreamy type of electric sound. Dont know why it’s on this list though, nothing amazing here
I just can’t adapt to this type of music. Repetitive and negative
Great album. Classic Clapton, Bruce and Baker
One of the all time greatest live albums. Great concert
More Brit electro pop. This did nothing for me but I guess there’s an audience for it being that there’s so much of it on this list.
Amazing voice, but prone to using gymnastics in the wrong spots at times
First time hearing these guys besides radio songs. Some good rock but nothing amazing
Excellent album, too bad the bass is lost in the mix
More Brit techno pop. I enjoyed some of this. Good background music
First Tom Petty album I’ve heard. Good debut
Great stuff, rockin out
These guys are great players and the overall production is sweet. A couple of big 70s hits on here as well. The cover really sucks.
British Ska. Rockin reggae some funny lyrics not really something I’d listen to again
Great album, lots of early rock hits and influential songs. Great recording , arrangements and performances from 1957
Great vocals but a little sickeningly sweet at times. Karens singing on “Close to You” is magical
My first time listening to this band, kiddie metal laced with rap. Not my thing but It was tolerable
Stupid lyrics and annoying vocals over background music
Bowie and Eno. The first of the Berlin albums. I didn’t care for this much when it came out. Pretty good in retrospect
Good 80s pop/rock. Cyndi's debut album
Good solid reggae
My first Al Green album. Great soul singer but besides “Let’s Stay Together “ nothing really seemed like it would be too memorable.
Sinatra sings bossa nova
First time listening to K.D. Great voice, fine album of country swing songs
Not bad melancholy Brit rock unknown to me until now. Good lyrics, good vocals
First time listening to a Kraftwerk album. Great futuristic sound from 1978
So this is krautrock. More like craprock. The first “song “was so annoying I almost shut it off. I thought “Giggy Smile”was going to redeem them but no. This is great if you want a headache
Good dance album
Masterpiece- My favorite Rush album
I found some of this entertaining, some good lyrics going on. But I only listened to about 10 songs before it started getting on my nerves
Memorable for The Exorcist theme
Nice sound but a bit too repetitive for me
Britt pop. I’m good for a couple of songs but it gets old fast
Whiney and boring
The title says it all. Great album
There’s a couple of decent tracks on here but overall it’s pretty weak. Why is it even on this list?
Played out after 3 tracks, nothing wrong I guess if you’re into this type of thing , personally I find it dull and repetitive . Enough with the electro beats already
Please no more Radiohead. It’s been like 3 of them already and it’s only getting worse.
Not what I expected. Pretty interesting different 60s sound. Somewhat progressive and very british
Boring
Noisy alt rock, nothing to hold my interest here
It was 20 years ago today…Iconic
Not my type of music but interesting lyrics and vocal style
Good albeit a little long soul album of Marvin whining about his divorce
Debut album, ok singer/songwriter affair
Dream pop, is that really a thing? It does have a dreamy sound, nice background for a nap.
Great concept album
Brazilian psychedelia from the 60s, pretty unique but not something I can imagine listening to of my own accord
Debut album, very good
Nah
At last I get a kick ass heavy rock band that I never heard of. Great vocals
Psychedelic voodoo sound, not what I expected. Pretty cool
These guys go from cooking to dull in a flash. Production is always top notch
Much better than I remember.
First exposure to these guys. Pretty funny
More electronica to nap by
I know it’s a classic and influential to many but come on, it’s the same song over and over.
I listened to the remastered version. Why the hell would anyone bother remastering this crap.
I don’t know anything about salsa and don’t understand much Spanish but the band is cooking
Great album, classic Motown sound, Papa was a Rolling Stone makes it a easy 6
Good album but there’s better Neil Young out there so I don’t get why this makes the list
The Who’s debut. Mixed bag, some solid songs some filler, but I find most Who albums to be such.
Pretty good world music type stuff when Jah Wobble isn’t “singing”which kind of ruins the feel of the rest of it
How can I give The Kings debut any less than a 5?
First time listening to these guys, British new wave/ punk rock played very well. Good album, a bit on the dark side.
There’s some good guitar riffs mixed in here but for the most part I find it very non musical and vile. I probably would have loved this at thirteen
5th one and I’m only 242 into this. I didnt they had this many albums. It’s a decent record but enough with the Talking Heads already there’s a lot of good music out there.
Bowies masterpiece, great band, not a bad song on it
First time for Herbie. Cool, funky jazz but halfway through everything started to sound the same
Van Halen’s debut is a hard rockin showcase to a new era of guitar playing. Great album
My favorite Police album. Great stuff
Good album if you like the singer songwriter thing
These guys have a lot of energy but not something I would listen to, after 3 songs it all sounds the same
Rap just doesn’t do it for me but this wasn’t as nasty and stupid as some other records the generator threw at me
Classic album, great songs and vocals
Dull, poorly mixed wall of noise with some weak singing, definitely not for me
Some of this has an eerie ominous effect that borders on unnerving at times, would work well in a horror movie minus the vocals
I like this album better than the last Depeche Mode that generated
Amazing solo piano concert, beautiful
Growing up in the 70s the hits on this album were in constant radio airplay so they’re imbedded in my brain. Some nice guitar on this.
Still not a fan of rap but at least this was somewhat musical and not vile to the point of having to take it off
That’s two rap albums in a row, am I being punished?
African music on the soft side. Nice but it got dull after three songs.
Another beautiful album, great production, unique almost alien sound
Great live R&B set of some classic Cooke tunes
Good live R&B album, not the best recording but a great performance
Great shock rock album
Electro synth nu wave, no guitars and Cars, a bit repetitious at times
Angry, filthy and noisy. I might have liked this at 15 but it’s too negative and lame to entertain me at this stage of the game. 3 stars for writing Hurt
Excellent album, great writer
Nothing memorable here, basic rock record
Great writer, I just can’t adapt to his “singing”
60’s balladeers, not too terrible
This album is impressive just for the fact that it’s composed primarily of human voices
Third Nick Cave album. I never listened to him before this project and like what I’ve heard so far but enough already.
Generic glam rock, kind of bland. Bang a Gong is ok
Cool for a few songs before it gets boring
Rap just ain’t for me
My favorite Metallica album. I think this is the one that defined their sound
Dull
Respect automatically knocks it up to 5. Areatha is amazing throughout but some of the material she has to work with is a bit weak
I thought this would be an overrated endeavor being the critical acclaim and it being his last album. I was wrong, this is a great farewell. R.I.P.
Took me 40 years to listen to this. Great album
Great album from a master storyteller
I’ve been listening to this since I found it in my father’s record collection when I was 10 years old. Love it. Santana is a master of the guitar.
Not for me, rap silliness
First time listening to Taylor Swift. Not what I expected, good writer. I don’t know if this is comparable to her other work but this was a nice introduction.
Why is this below average band all over this listst that’s supposed to be innovative?
Even if It’s not my type of music I try to be objective about production and such, hey maybe someone else likes it, but this is just bogus.
Really cool jazz album, I’ll be back
A couple of good songs but overall just ok for me. Kind of sloppy and muddled recording doesn’t help it
Good Bowie album, some nice guitar on this
Noisy rudimentary rock, not for me
Maidens debut. Funny I should get this on the day Paul DiAnno died or was it on purpose
One dimensional and whiny. Nay
I’ve made a conscious decision to stop listening to the rap/ hip hop albums. Beats mean nothing to me and I don’t care about the stupid shit they’re running and that seems to be the basis around which all these recordings revolve. Life’s too short.
“Fairytale of NY” is one of my favorite Christmas songs and earns this a 5. Besides this we have Irish folk rock, well played and amusing at times though it’s only good for about a half hour with me before I get bored with it
First time hearing these guys, decent songwriting, sounded like Indie old timey music but got boring for me after twenty minutes
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is a 5 for me, so do I 5 the whole album? Nah
Great album
Haven’t heard of these guys before. Supposedly this is krautrock, kind of psychedelic avant- garde, some interesting bits but there’s a couple of 17 minute + pieces that noisily drone on in the middle of the record, that’s where they lost me
First time listening to her, pretty cool singer/songwriter fare
Too long, couldn’t listen to the whole double album as punk isn’t really my thing but I didn’t hate it altogether
I had a hard time rating this because although there's some great tracks there's also some real experimental garbage as well but in the end I've come to the conclusion that the greatness overrides the crap so...
