Cowboy Junkies
2/5
For a split second I heard myself say I am going to like this. It did not last!
I was intrigued by the blues nature of the music and the lady singer is quality. Sadly she eventually droned on like a dying cat. And the background music slowly killing said cat.
I do like "I don't Get It". After that its so slow and lifeless I could not recommend it anymore.
Its a shame as the blocks of this I seem to resonate with but in this format I have found a album I grew to dislike rather than the other way around. Ironically I could easily suffer this for hours on end unlike other albums but I don't want to.

I should not have wasted my time on a review of this.
"My man is my man is your man and heard thats her man...blah blah..I just keep him satisfied through the weekend."
Absolute dross banging homies and whatever. I am expressing myself and how I want to be taken seriously as a women and not just taken to the bedroom.

David Bowie
3/5
Got off to a slow bland start but thankfully picked up from the second song with a demented frenzy on the keys which I liked (I loved all the piano work in this album top notch).
For me it wasn't the end of weak songs. Drive-in-Saturday is a similar theme to the first song. Jolly but without any meaningful shift away from the mundane. There was also some odd change of gear with songs resembled a guitar power ballad which grated slightly for me. The prettiest star another mundane that linked almost all the middling ones.
There are even songs I really like but they are peppered with silly repeating bits and la la lahs. It's a shame.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this album, barely any artists can nail a whole album of songs and keep it varied yet coherent. It's harsh in a way as many many albums are just middle road fodder on the same rating. I can't put ziggy out my mind as that is far superior so can't have this occupying the same space.

Not a bad album for what is a fairly distinctive edge. I enjoy some of these songs from my past so keeps me interested.
Can be a bit crashy and clumsy at times but enjoyable.

Soft indie band crying over spilt milk. Everything that was bad about the 90's exists here.
Electronic renaisance - What is this rubbish it literally asualted my ears.
Guitair style really grates for me as its a jolly strumming that just never ends or varies. typical of the genre and time.
Best thing about this album is the album cover!

I just found this inoffensive. Nothing to annoy or inspire just a middle of the road something / nothing.
I knew the first song well and that was the peak straight away so it just fell away after that.
I dont even know what this is but to me just electro pop or something. Not my world. 2 would be harsh and 3 would be generous. So there we go!
Depeche Mode

The Velvet Underground
3/5
Thankfully stuck with it as next tracks were more expansive and had a better blues like vibe for me. Some songs even had a (little less rocky) led zeppelin feel.
Amazing this came out of 60s. It's a grower so maybe I could come around to this eventually.
Foo Fighters

Meh!
Santana
4/5
Not sure if nostalgia bump from listening to my parents albums when young. I find it quite amazing the guitar can be so overwhelmingly prominent to this degree. Blended styles. I would not generally listen these days but still enjoy it.
Sufjan Stevens
3/5
Bit of a jumble to me. Soft soppy music, then shifted to something I would describe as theatre west end musical type sound. There was one song I liked called Jacksonville.
Can't really say I think it's awful just not for me. Clearly musical lot with many instruments on show.
The Temptations
2/5
Really not sure. not my thing. highly random at times. Did make me laugh with the lyrics on one track so gave them an extra star.
First album where I have struggled to form an opinion.
Sabu

Due to cultural incometance I have failed on this one. My music blindness means I cannot formuate an opinion. Fail.

Quite diverse suite of songs.
Very similar to TFS on first disc.
Love the lyrics on many of the songs. Very amusing.
Bob Dylan
3/5
I am not a significant folk fan so do have an immediate bias against this more folk leaning example from his many albums. I dont know loads of Bob songs but what I do know I think we have better to come from him for my taste. Bring on the rock and blues fusion I know there will be an album of his in this list later.
Sadly while his lyrics are clearly amazing its a style and delivery which doesnt resonnate with me personally. I get the historical context etc and his voice is part of the story telling but cant go high on this one based on my musical taste rather than my view of how impactful it was to the music industry etc.
Fatboy Slim
4/5
I know this album very well. It was a album I liked testing my bass on whatever sound system I had at the time (When I was young like Kalifornia or Love island (it builds to the mother load)). I think by this point I had a subwoofer setup.
I didn’t like fatboy slim when I first experienced it. It grew on me however and at the time so did other music like chemical brothers. 15 years old when this came out!
Solid album for me and fact its outside of my normal music listening it still manages to wiggle its way in for me.
Slipknot
4/5
Woke me up at 09:30am so that was helpful.
I actually enjoy this music. I think it has so much noise my mind blends it into some kind of mashed melodic trance.
No idea how but this gave me clarity while working. I dont really listen to the lyrics I just follow the melody of the track (Drums and guitair mainly). I find I can literally zero in on where the music is taking me. Bit like being dragged along by a winding river. It is messy but has logic and direction to it.
Little mellow treat of Snuff near the end. More typical to "Pop" ones that made them famous.
I enjoyed this album I even went on to listen to the bonus live album bits at the end (not all from this album). Unexpected little heavy joy I got from this :) for which bar one song had never heard before.
Louis Prima
4/5
I enjoyed the songs best when they were smashing out the loud freestyle sections.
Louis has a great voice. Sax was pretty epic too.
What a show if you could hear something like this live today.
Joni Mitchell
2/5
I can’t find any reason to consider this music bad. I just don’t like this music to my taste.
Its reminiscent of music I would have heard my Mum play at home.
I don’t specifically see why in 1974 this would have been pioneering personally.
Probably deserves 3 but this is about what I think so 2. I really had to preserver to get this album done.
Jorge Ben Jor
3/5
Some songs were a 4 but most were a solid 3 for me. I do enjoy the music though the language was some part of a barrier.
I do think many songs sound dated so didnt stand up quite so well in my opinion but can hear the merit of what they produced.
Not a great fit for my music taste but still managed to enjoy listening to the album.
Iggy Pop
3/5
I dont mind the album but the slow backdrop does get a bit repetitive over time. Its like a slow riff pattern on repeat.
Some songs are a little David Bowie esk.
Seems quite modern for the time with the use of synth etc. 1 or 2 songs a 4 but majority make this a 3 for me.
Rod Stewart
3/5
I listened to this album an amazing 3 times. Not because I loved it specifically just i liked some songs to a greater extend and could not chose between 3 or 4 stars.
I just find throat cancer singers a little annoying for me (though he seems to improve with speed generally when more rock / blues vs folky cancer). Sorry I have no idea why. Never been a Rod Stewart fan specifically and not really appreciated his music in any meaningful way. I could happily put this music on and enjoy it though so more impactful than I thought.
Decent musicians in parts of this. just listening to the variety of instruments was the best part.
This is a better 3 than most of what I have rated before it on same score! Cant do partial scores however so there we have it. I round down not up. Suck it.
The Doors
2/5
Some songs I think are really interesting. However aside from the odd peak the majority of the album I found a very boring rhythm. Secondly it is clearly quite blues in nature which I like but it was the type of blues that just repeats in an annoying slow loop. I even heard some nick cave esk vocals but delivered in a flat and boring way. It has nothing on that!
Jack White
4/5
I am already in deep with Jack White so have quite a bias. Dont think I have ever listened to this album from start to finish specifically but recognise many if not all the songs.
I think this is a lower 4 based on my preference. Assuming more Jack white or his collaborations come up I would expect a stronger 4 for me as he can be better than this album (he has done so many good albums across numerous bands). Great artist.
T. Rex
4/5
I had to suffer poor audio on this one and had to rush it which was sad. Limited time. Will revisit later. Enjoyed the variety.
Nick Drake
2/5
Sop fest not for me. I am sure there is clever intergrated tunes and whatever. Just so dull for me and not sure I can finish this album.
Like jack johnson. Fine in background but to actually carefully listen I honestly dont think I ever would. Nope!
Ice Cube
2/5
Not sure what the obsession is with dicks and ball sacks. Some serious Dick bingo going on.
Not a G and dont listen to rap so cant really appreciate this style of music.
I also dont hate the po, dont own a gun and not yet been in the crate.
I think a good rapper but not relating to the style, the content or the music.
Elliott Smith
1/5
What is this. 1997 and this is the best they could do? Who likes this soppy stuff. Weak. Bring back ice cubes balls. Least that was funny.
Beatles
3/5
Includes lots of pop bangers this one. Normally I prefer the more obscure songs and especially like when they experiment with instruments. Less so on this but still enjoyed it.
"I should have known better" I personally think this one is weak. Worst on the album
"And I love her" - Best. I think Paul song and on this album prefer his contributions / style.
Only just made 3 for me.
The Cure
4/5
a bit like a slow epic thriller. Not a great deal of action but it has you captivated never the less. Its no captain america but its complex, dark and slow.
I cant get away from the film score vibe about it. It even had a futuristic song at one point which would not have been missplaced in Tron.
Very repetative songs but its like the song was built on top of it so doesnt get borning. Always being layered and phasing in and out of new paths.
Dont think ever listened to this before and despite not being my normal go to style they really are very good!
I didnt think I liked the cure that much so thats something too. After this I listened to a 1985 album and not the same for me or as good as this.
N.E.R.D
1/5
Terrible background canned rock. Each song just a repeat of what came before.
I find the vocals are high pitched and managed to become irritating as more modern iterations achieve a more energetic catchy effect which is almost entirely missing here.
No chance I would listen to this or similar again. Its got the polish of a hospital.
I dont think I can find any redeeming feature of this as the lyrics are crap too.
Neil Young
2/5
Like thinking to yourself that lady is hot. Then they turn around and its some soft guy with a beard. Your disappointed. So much promise. You made an error. No harm done I guess. Didn't know Neil before and still wont...I must walk away. Sorry.
To be serious a second it's like Mickey mouse having an orgasim. An articulate Mickey mouse I might add.
Beth Orton
3/5
Not a massive fan of whining folk music but I can find merits in this. When Beth avoids the mega whine she is dynamic and engaging. I can hear lots of other successful artists in her music. Clearly a model that works for which she can be acclaimed in parts.
Calming little number in background. Neil young had beaten me so low I wasn't thrilled to get this but it wore me down eventually.
Steely Dan
3/5
Seems a little dated to me. Nothing wrong with anything in particular to me. Just bland as far as my tastes go.
Queen
4/5
I was a little torn on this one. I do love queen as do most people but maybe a little too theartrical on this one and heavy bias towards it. However to build so many themes and drama into their songs is impressive.
This album contains arguably their best song but the style of this album in general may divide. I respect their theatre and show like resonnance but I think they did better albums.
A band I would like to have watched for the show more than their music. They were amazing showmen.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
3/5
I think this band has better music out there and cant beleive this is their best album.
I didnt know any of the songs apart from the american women one which is the best on the album as far as I can tell from my limited experiance with this album. Just dont think the other songs majorly resonnated with me. Fairly middle of the road stuff apart from 1 or 2 songs max.
Nanci Griffith
2/5
Not a country fan and doubt this will ever change my mind.
Pixies
4/5
Its a rare treat to have so many songs glisten as you blast through an album. Fun and enjoyable quirky rock and I love them. Interesting album as those not as typically gravitating towards their style might have been hooked in by the odd catchy jingle of songs like "here comes your man".
Metallica
4/5
Pretty pop centric metal album but to create the energy of Metal in an accessible package and not only that creating an album of a consistently high quality through the tracks is impressive.
That aside have been a fan of Metallica since being hooked on their S&M album so have bias built in. I can see why this might divide opinion, but they can’t be horrendous to become one of the biggest bands ever and that’s before the fact they are a metal band.
Dire Straits
3/5
Blast from my youth as my parents listened to this ALOT.
I do like the album but for me its not aged perfectly. There are some decent songs on the album and quality of sound is really good but its over engineered to me in parts.
nostalgia wont elevate this any further for me.
Pixies
4/5
Lots of great songs and same variation in crashing sounds. Does seem more mellow than typical mind. Love the album still and part of their appeal still exists in this. Even if more chilled.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Compare to orpheous album I dont think this has the same impact for me. 2 slow, too stripped back. Too gentle. It leaves the raw cave lyrics to be the only course.
I really like sides with my dinner and no amount of spectacular lyrics will win me over (There are so many on offer).
I only just heard Nick cave (for the first time) and it makes me sad that this album doesnt bring me more of that surprise and enjoyment. Maybe its a grower not a shower. I listen to Nick alot now so hopefully this will penetrate me fully in time.
Waylon Jennings
3/5
Something on in the background is fine. I swear they ripped Jonny cash ring of fire. And heard Dr hook on one of the songs. Maybe rip off merchants who knows??
No issue with music. Middle of road for what it is for me
The Offspring
4/5
This is really hard to evaluate. On face value they have some strong songs but the 5 star system is hard to evaluate as flip flop between 3 and 4 stars as the score is not granular enough.
My reasoning for the strong score would be they are primarily a punk band. I grew up on The Offspring and lapped up their more mainstream fair which is more moderate punk and dimminished their essence despite me liking some of it arguably better. This album is more pure and natural for the band. There is no gloss and they bounce along like tigger on speed.
To me this is no different to the Pixies, or Ash or dare I say Neil Young (different genre but same principle). The lead singer in the offspring cant sing to save his life as far as I can tell to my untrained ear and seemingly thrashy at times but it works in the context of their bands music and style. I can see why it has a polarising effect like the other bands I mentioned all for different reasons but they come out on the better end of the scale for me in spite of it almost. One persons micky mouse (Neil Young) is anothers Nightingale.
To confirm for the record I like Pixies, Ash and The Offspring. Neil young less so he is a whinning little ear worm.
The Stooges
2/5
I never heard of this band but after listening to it couldnt find anything wrong with it as such but personally couldnt get engaged with it or find any value in it.
The Doors
4/5
These guys must have been absolute nutters. 60's music as well which is quite something. Clearly some songs sound very dated and the electro keyboard thing I dont think always helps with that but still impressive.
"Before you slipped into unconciousness I would like another kiss"
"1000 pills a 1000 thrills"
20th century fox - Worst song
Solo section in Light my fire - Great
Back door man - For the music if you ignore the vocals
The End - Slight mental but great song.
I dont think I ever gave the doors any credit. Critically listening has given me a new found interest for their music.
Mj Cole
1/5
This one is going to be a tough one...Oh yes it is. I am so bailing on this. First album but its just so bad.
Only thing worse than MJ cole...When he brings in an even bigger bell end to do his skat with.
I litterally could not stand this.
SZA

I should not have wasted my time on a review of this.
"My man is my man is your man and heard thats her man...blah blah..I just keep him satisfied through the weekend."
Absolute dross banging homies and whatever. I am expressing myself and how I want to be taken seriously as a women and not just taken to the bedroom.
At least Ice cube was funny! Shite
Nine Inch Nails
2/5
Odd blend. Its like grundge metal meets techno or something.
First, I heard this band was at university as my house mate liked it. At that time, I didn't connect with it. I guess the same this time with the difference I critically listened to it.
If I was to perform the part of a music critic I would give it a 3 as it is an interesting blend of music styles but for myself personally the music doesn't resonate with me and find it hard to connect with the rhythm of it.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
This album is likely the most consequential release to date on 1001. Its familiarity, constant replication, and groundbreaking nature have undeniably created a significant legacy, which naturally comes with certain baggage. Personally, I'd argue that superior versions of some tracks now exist, a perhaps unpopular opinion.
I suspect the reason some songs resonate more with me when performed by other artists lies in either the original production or Jimi's particular style. My analogy is akin to a pair of speakers pushed beyond their intended limits, leading to distortion during the more energetic or louder passages. While many bands excel at a raw sound, I personally find that the overall experience of these particular songs is diminished rather than enhanced in original form.
Not all are like this but as this is a 60's album I will give the benefit of the doubt and list to an average of 4.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Had to double dip on this to ensure I got a good view of it as not as easy going. Again another softer and more stripped back Nick Cave experiance which I dont prefer. I quite like the more atmospheric experiance this album brings mind. Its more intimate stance and it feels more centered around Nick. I think this could be an absolute winner if he managed to currate all his styles in the music. A bit like a genuine ballard that has impactful sections and up and downs. Lacked this contrasting energy.
My worst review as I am struggling to explain myself. Have absolutely no issue playing this again though. Oddly doesnt bore me in the slightest as so much to it but still leaves me wanting more.
Stevie Wonder
3/5
He is a talent for sure. It's a bit too much funk for my personal taste and sadly I just don't connect with most of the music. Dune great songs in there but not my bag.
B.B. King
4/5
I havent listened to Jazz and blues reliably for about 15 years. Not sure why I dont typically listen to music like this but its top notch.
When at university I did get immersed in some decent jazz / blues where I have to say personally its where the genre sets itself apart as its a live spectacle of musical mastery which you dont always get from "typical" music artists live.
Great album and I need to spend some time on this for sure! Or better still find a live band to go see.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Slightly quiet funk / smooth and soul for my taste (Thats my prism of view and hard to shit that).
Anyway the review. At first it just seemed to blend into a blob of music with limited character. However my view has changed a bit as for some reason I ended up listening to it about 4-5 times.
I do think its great music and while I would not choose it necesarily I did find it engaging and grabbed me in the end. It was chilled and especially liked it when driving where I could listen to it carefully. I feel like I have been brainwashed by a preacher but hey ho.
I just learned he sang chocolate salty balls (South park) so thats something too. Haha. Worth a listen to bring you back to earth. "I hate when my balls stick"
The Stone Roses
4/5
Already a fan of this album. Definately if you took all of the Stone Roses work and did a top 10. Most of it would be on this album.
They are a little formulaic at times with their songs but despite this I still find it enjoyable and they break out at different intervals to provide some great guitair solos. I just find it very unoffensive.
Its also like a dance tune the way it has consistant backing and the "tune" is then stuck on stop. It therefore has catchy guitair hooks that repeat in a similar way in my opinion. Anyway I have a hangover so best I cant get out of my head right now!
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
I feel this is solid music. Well written etc but its not a style i like and sadly the vocals dont resonnate with me so does cap it slightly. I have to be honest I think many people will disagree with me but less about the musicallity I just dont like it. Its boring and I would struggle if I had to listen to it again.
The White Stripes
4/5
Very different at times to previous album. I think this has more depth as sometimes old Jack can be a repeat monster. Certainly some classic songs in there with distinctive sound but I enjoy the broader pace and sounds.
Not going to blow anyone away but above average.
Jurassic 5
2/5
Cant get on board with this. Not my style of music. It seems far supirior to recent R&B / hip hob music we have recently had to endure on here. Least it wasnt ramming down our throats annoying themes in the lyrics.
Wasnt just about balls and feminism which was unusual :)
The Notorious B.I.G.
2/5
This rap is undeniably excellent—it's incredibly well-crafted and executed.
However, I find myself struggling to connect with it. My appreciation for the intricacies of rap just isn't there.
I’d be intrigued to discover if there’s even better rapping out there. Perhaps if someone took this brilliance and created a pop version that simplified and diluted it, I might find enjoyment in it. Unfortunately, my listening of rap are closer to 'Girls Aloud' level as a comparison. BIG I am sorry I am too musically weak to appreciate this. The only respect I can give is listening to your album in full!
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Weird album as I find I love it but peppered with weaker songs. Still great but only just makes the 4 for me.
Curtis Mayfield
2/5
Not much variation between songs. Hasn't aged that well.
Johnny Cash
2/5
Bit too much rambling on this one. It just started getting good towards the end but sadly too late for me. He can be so much better than this!
Beastie Boys
3/5
Not a bad album for what is a fairly distinctive edge. I enjoy some of these songs from my past so keeps me interested.
Can be a bit crashy and clumsy at times but enjoyable.
Steely Dan
3/5
I like how well they fuse so many styles together and the blend often works extremely well (especially the more jazz sections and guitair solo). I was surprised I knew some of the songs on this album.
Sounded slightly dated at times and routed in 80s. Lots of promise on this album but the bangers were only occassionally but as something to listen too while cooking or something I would definately come back to it.
De La Soul
3/5
Not entirely sure what genre this sits in. I can hear so much of other songs in this. They must have created a large impact and influence on what came after them. For example gorilaz, will smith or Fat boy slim have similarities with this and many more I cant put my fingers on!
Unlike some other similar hip hop / rap I didn't find their "message" irritating, overly macho or self indulgent. Just a playful appraisal of their view of life that seemed a bit funny and real.
Crème del la genre! Just shame not my thing but they must be great if it wasn't for me reviewing them!
Eagles
3/5
I thought I knew this album and had extremely high expectations. I am a little sad as it turns out my view of Eagles is built based on their "A" game titles. Hotel California is a great. Nothing wrong with the album its good but many songs are just bland. Not in a shit bland kind of way. Like a VW they are extremly solid and reliable and often arguably the best choice but sensible doesnt always mean best. VW can make some amazing sports / luxury cars but at their core they are a sensible mans car. I am going to go get into my VW group car and cry now.
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
There are times that this sounds like its falling apart then they surprise you with some polish and variance.
I have always considered MSP to be a B band. Never turn them off and even seen them live. They are fun and entertaining. They are however just the average rock pop you listen to by chance not design.
Probably harsh but just my personal viewpoint but never unlocked my personal play list despite me probably knowing them well.
Pavement
3/5
Missed this first time around on our group review. Never heard of this band to my knowledge. I find it odd I didnt connect with it as prime for me in my youth to have absorbed this and no reason on listening that I would have avoided it. I guess the main complaint I have is its decent music but it does lack variation. I can see how listening to the album unless I was paying attention it might just pass me by without me wanting to engage. To be this throttles its appeal. I may come back to this band to explore some more mind.
2/5
An example of excellent music thats just boring. It just drums lots of nothingness in me and I just bounce along. I dont hate nore like it. Just a waft of music I occassionally glimpse then ignore.
Good fortune is the most recognisable to me but I hear other better artists doing something similar and better. Blah.
Talking Heads
2/5
The vocalist seems off his head and would love to have heard something like this live. This is my first experiance of this band and for me its steeped in 80's but in a way that locks it there which is a shame for me.
It has massive energy about it. I just imagine a load people flopping about on a dance floor with badly fitting suits when I hear this. I consider this more disco for some reason. While not classic pop it has some similar vibes about it.
Close but no cigar for me. I just find the vocalist voice slightly annoying which is a hard hurdle for me to get over (it frustrates me as I think he is excellent other than to my ear). This is good though so I need to listen to it some more as I think it would grow on me. I suspect I will regret this rating but its what I feel right now.

Just to be transparent in the first 5 seconds I decided I hated this. Like some kind of blind tribal curse.
This music and those like it, I possess a rather specific condition – a self-diagnosed case of unearned musical snobbery. It's a concious delusion, where my limited cultural exposure has convinced me I'm above appreciating anything that doesn't fit my incredibly specific, and uninspired, criteria. Anyway there is my excuse for being an intolerant, old-fashioned insert word. It's a personal failing.
Though who's to say my decades of selective listening arent simply more evolved than those "people" that listen to this. Is it my sophisticated filtering mechanism. Higher function or intolerance you decide...
And yes I did listen to the WHOLE album. To actually write something about this album. Its like listening to a Haribo advert just less fun as you cant see anything.
Prince

I was excited to listen to this as Prince is an epic artist with hugh talent with well known tracks. I was also concious that I have never actively chosen to listen to Prince. Probably as much of his style links to genres I dont naturally gravitate towards (He blends just about all of them from what I can tell).
Sadly, not a revelation for me and won't be rushing to change my habits having listened to this. It's a strange collection of sounds and styles. I just felt myself ebb and flow with my enjoyment level.
Ultimately many tracks dont inspire much in me and I found it frustrating that I just found the solos and odd diversions interesting.
I do think I will let a bit more Prince in to my music as some interesting stuff amongst the momumental musicmanship peacocking thats on display in the most insane way with Prince. Hes like a broken tap for me (the water being pure genius being my analogy and think of me as an american prisoner being water boarded then dropping the sink on my head).
Brian Wilson

He literally died day before this came up. Couple of great songs and that was it for me. This can't match beach boys surely. It's just 60/70s pop that hasn't lasted? It's not bad but quite samey. I will avoid the long waffle I just don't think this breaks through.
David Bowie
3/5
Late in career album and I think that steeps this offering. Has the vibe of an experiment about it. I did enjoy it but somehow some things didn't connect perfectly for me like a bad gear change. I actually thought a little nick cave at times with the vocals, style and mortality theme. Bar the odd grating of the gears I will come back to this for sure. I also like the odd jazz double dip have it some energy.
Iron Maiden
2/5
Generic fodder for the genre. It's not bad but I would not actively pursue their music. I class it b grade in that I would not turn off but not in my rotation.
It's also not hugely significant in my opinion on influence or musicality.
Ultimately admiral contribution but middle ground.
2/5
I do like Blur. This is not their best album. It feels a bit like an experiment. They clearly had not nailed it here. Some elements of the fun, energy and britishness are there but just badly composed. I would describe this as the most listenable bad album I have reviewed so far.
Meat Loaf
3/5
It's a bit like a Christmas album. It is just a festive puke fest. We lower our standards because we are giddy with nostalgia and occasion. We throw all musical sense and typical taste in the bin. Then we watch DIY SOS cry a little then we arrive at this weak position of our typical selves. Now I welcome you to this album. Since when do you like love power ballards. I was ready to destroy this album. I will give it it's due as whatever I think it's premier league but I just don't massively like it. I won't revisit but they can be thankful I am in a wet state and it can scrape a 3.
Public Enemy
2/5
Yeah Boyz...Another example of something I cant help but think is excellent music. Just wrong target (me).
Least it didnt make my ears bleed like some examples which are literally torture. I can listen to this without being on edge so I commend them for that against a tough audiance.
Dr. Dre

I wont repeat my normal reasoning on this genre. Usual Cock / Cocain bingo amongst other select penis words. No thank you.
The White Stripes

I just like ALL the songs. Rare on an album. They manage to smash 2 instruments and somehow take a band you imagine at the school rock show and make it polished.
Critical listening I could hear great vocal range. From straining in the "union forever" to gibbering like possed in "Little room" to soft calm songs later scattered about. Mostly never straying far away from the core garage sound yet giving you pretty much everything.
"Expecting" - The weakest song in the pack but the album is just so good to have such depth.
Also reminds me of such a good time for more garage like music coming out in the 00's. Black keys, strokes, queens of the stone age, the hives and then any group Jack played in. I realise on reflection how much I enjoy that genre of music and probably played a significant part in my musical formation. I just forgot how much I loved the Vines too so off to listen to that now! Close to wanting to give a album a 5!
Lambchop
2/5
Listening to this album felt like hitting 'shuffle' on a single, extremely beige track. Every song merged into one monotonous blob.
The only energy shift I noted was the artist pushing their voice from merely pathetic to a truly transcendent level of vocal fragility.
Just sounded like backing music rather than something I want to listen to.
Kate Bush

Fantastical. Slightly mad and enjoyed the story effect. Very talented singer with great range.
Not really explored but nostalgia from my youth played out through my family.
I think I need to give this a deeper look.
Merle Haggard

Not bad but they just blur into one. Not much variation and best song on album wasn't country it was rock and roll!
Amy Winehouse

I'm a nymphomaniac (and drug fuelled) surprised by men sort of thing. Shock.
I was expecting better if I am honest as always considered her a talent even if not my personal taste. I think better to come from her. Didn't reach the tempo and jazz fest I was hoping for. Maybe next time.
Johnny Cash

Another live prison performance. I struggle to see how the setting itself enhances the musical merit or offers any unique cultural innovation. To me, it's no more inherently exciting or noteworthy than performing in a public park or even for a large-scale charity concert like Band Aid. We don't typically assume that playing Band Aid grants extra artistic credibility, nor should we automatically attribute a sense of 'giving back' to the artist in this context. I just don't find it remarkable, and I can't see how this environment meaningfully elevates the music.
That said it was kinda interesting how he was engaging with the prisoners and the guards and his song selection was amusing and considered for the context. A boy named sue for example went down well and his "living hell San Quentin...I hate very inch of you!"
I personally think better than last prison album I listened to by him and would undoubtedly be amazing to have experianced. That said as music middle of the road but would not stop me exploring Johnny cash more.
Gang Starr
1/5
Not a fan if I am honest. I could not really define a gear change in any way from one song to the next. The music seemingly only having the purpose of a metronome. I am a music first and lyric second type of guy so this really fails to inspire me. The rapping is pretty decent but I am not reviewing poetry I need it to become a package and I dont get that here.
Parliament
2/5
Not my typical listening for sure. It has quite a bit of energy without getting too much on the brain. I could reasonably listen to this as background but cant see a reason why I would want to specifically single it out. Not particularly diverse to my ear.
Dinosaur Jr.
2/5
I keep wondering when this band will wake up. They seem on the face of it a slightly heavy band but they juxtapose that with a weak and lifeless voice over. Its very strange. Its like getting Darth Vader and replacing his voice with Mr Bean. It would make no sense to what your watching.
I imagine grundgy rock with this. Like say Foo fighters or Nirvana. A better lead for this band of pretty much anyone could elevate this to something decent I would think. Wasted potential!
Sludgefest I actually enjoyed it felt a little Stone Roses esk. Mainly because there was large sections with no singing!
Is it just a jam session it is so confusing to listen to!? In fact I didnt realise how much I see Mr Bean in this. Large sections of absent voice on most tracks. Mumble weakness. Whatever man.
Fugees
3/5
This is where multiple artists seems to work for the most part and lots of styles complementing each other again mostly. More than just another rap album I would say on that basis as quite diverse.
They have some strong songs in the mix in this album. "How many Mics" seemed very poor and in contrast to the rest of the album for me. Maybe I missed the joke or something.
A very generous 3. I just feel typical for this genre is a checklist of how they must be. Just an echo of what came before. Least this has more artistic variation though.
Miles Davis
5/5
Despite 2 mega tracks still found myself noticing clear musical divides. Its like a Jam of the most amazing artists of their respective instruments. Top quality.
I would say at times its a little repetitive but thankfully mostly in a mediative, trance like way. With it always building or winding towards something and if you really listen there is always a sub note track going on.
I still maintain its hard to get the most out of Jazz without being there live but the mood they generated in this was outstanding. Played to the title and tracks to perfection.
Loved the odd crackle and mild airy tone on Trumpet Miles gets in there as well. To play a trumpet so clean and mild yet chuckiung in the odd delicate imperfection is amazing. Got better with each listen.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I suddenly have an urge to dust off my old trumpet and resurrect my dire blowing skills.
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
There is the odd artist where I just refuse to accept the popular view and even the critics seems to love him.
Its just dull ramblings of a man that sounds like he is old and smokes 60 a day.
I think its the folk meets rock I just dont like (not just Bruce). Artists that too are famed for their story telling and narrative.
In the defence of Bruce I am undoubtedly an individual that prioritises sound over narrative. Basically I struggle to intellectually engage with lyrics (which would add context and depth to the music) while also deconstructing all the component parts of the music composition.
Anyway tone set. I do question people that clearly love him. Do you really see variation from one song to the next or are you loving the idea of the struggle or whatever he is giving out? No idea as was not listening to the lyrics remember. Least not this time as cant be bothered.
Television
3/5
Never heard of them before. They are a really solid and interesting band. The guitair is excellent and the main selling point for me. Over the top we have a slightly grating raw vocal that mixes well.
Aged very well I would say and and must have proved somewhat influentially you would think. I do hear more modern bands in their sound. Nearly gave 4.
Pleased to have discovered this album!
Tears For Fears
3/5
I think its fair to say this album hasnt entirely aged well albiet there is some familiar songs that I still highly enjoy.
I think my main complaint here aside from how its aged is some songs are not as strong so not entirely winning on that front.
I found Broken / Head Over Heals (2 songs on Album) was quite cinematic. Very sci-fi theme at times and swear I recognise from somewhere (Masters of the universe maybe). I enjoyed that side of them.
Ultimately a good band that I enjoy listening to every song. Lots of little jingles amongst the songs that I found oddly familiar. Maybe we need the plagiarism investigators on this one!
Blur
3/5
The first two tracks are typical, impactful Blur immediately recognisable and strong. I've always had a soft spot for 'Beetlebum' and the song 2. Beyond those, the album gets a little messy. I usually appreciate Blur's ability to maintain their style while offering good song variation, which typically keeps me engaged throughout an album. On this one, however, the flow feels a bit off, and it can be disjointed. There are certainly interesting moments within the songs, but the lack of continuity detracts from any overarching album theme. It also has a more pronounced classic rock vibe than their other works, with some heavy themes explored. It didn't quite land as a hit for me, but it's not entirely terrible.
John Grant
2/5
Well this is a hard one. So many individual reflections. It's like a squad of talented individuals managed by a poor coach is my analogy.
I feel this is a decent band that failed to break through so turned to "comedy" to create a novelty act. The comedy theme seemed laced but not consistent. Songs like on a silver platter was coherent theme but repetitive. Same for JC hates faggots. Others were bleating tunes that were odd comedy with literally no connected theme in the lyrics to point I couldn't identify anything remotely amusing so just became a dull song.
Then some songs were extremely varied and had more depth in their musicality and atmosphere generated almost to point I could be listening to a pink Floyd album.
Ultimately it was a miss on comedy, it's a loss on its cohesion and I didn't really reveal it's point. It dabbled at being great at many things but failed to deliver. Bloody long too. I am sad in a way to have this opinion.
2/5
This was like a jack hammer to my brain. It was impossible to work while this was on. I enjoyed slipnot while working so shows I have reasonable capacity to absorb the melody of "noise".
At one point it felt like I was having a nervous breakdown. Nails down a black board vibe while being assaulted with yet more sound / feedback / distortion. Its like they deliberatly attempted to use the electronics "fail" state to make music then throw in volume and miss timing for destructive effect.
Like a cloud moving over to briefly let the light in I did get glimpses of their musicality and even sounded a little like the chemical brothers at one point.
Hold Hands and it will happen - Sounds a bit like Idles as it starts off and some songs like this did appear captivating and punk esk. Certainly potential but I think this album could be better!
Charles Mingus
2/5
hmm moody one and album opens on quite a frantic note. Lots of Jazz styles in this as already by track 2 we have a something different softer yet still maintaining the soft turmoil which then evaporates back to frenzied motion.
It's a bit like taking all the old smoozy sections of James bond and collating them into one frantic album of action and misogyny. Just without the clues of the visuals it seems a little lost.
Clearly some excellent sections but as a concept doesn't quite land for me as a little aggressive for my delicate lobes and mental state!
Jethro Tull
3/5
Didnt take long to have an appreciation for this album. Lots of great musicality, interesting lyrics and even some unusually amazing piping going on!
I liked the intricate guitair work too where someone was twanging his strings to perfection. Fingerpicking I beleive is the technical term so google tells me as I have no idea what it was called.
I feel I have underpowered the score here but I might need this to grow on me to fully appreciate it. I think I will come back to this as I think it deserves it.
Radiohead
5/5
I hear from fans etc that Radiohead were not always in sync with what they produced. They didnt like some of their own music. In my mind for this album it is so deep and paradoxical it can't have occured outside of a genuine creative bubble (I would assume and hope).
"The National Anthem" had chemical brother vibes for me just more rock and atmospheric. Well just better! Its just builds and builds to a frantic end. Never graiting mind as the song takes you on a journey.
This album is like a music jet wash. It blasts the clinkers from the edges left by lesser bands. It awakens the senses from its doom scrolling zombie land. Has the effect of an orchestra more so than a traditional band. His voice literally replacing the wind section its that stunning at times with its range.
I dont know why but I get church vibes when I listen to their music. Like I am celebrating a wedding, then a death or whatever. Its got such visceral dimmension (I had to google the definition of visceral to ensure its what I meant :) ).
After idioteque seemed to tail off slightly. Morning Bell almost feels like an exit from the dark into some form of light. Much softer tone and some kind of redemption / solice in what came before. Personally find it a little weaker as in idioteque the vocals are sublime off beat / tone noise and used to perfection but in the morning Bell / motion picture is seems slightly more "normal" and less captivating, though at times his high pitch hold is still epic. Didnt want to end with negatives but it just doesnt end as strong for me.
An amazing album and like a fine wine needs some time to air. I need to come back to this. I find its alot to take in and I appreciate that as yet not a commited Radiohead fan so clearly still on a journey with them. Can't believe I never listened to this album in full. Its funny as I dont dislike their mainstream stuff in fact I think much of it was great but they didnt make me want to immerse in them for reasons I cannot explain.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
"Blue Rondo" is a bit nerves inducing. Not sure I loved it as probably needed some foreplay first to get into the mood with this one.
Anyway, normal service resumed after this, and I was able to gather myself. "Strange Meadow Lark" I was thinking Theresa May, cutting loose in a meadow, probably humming a jaunty tune and feeling incredibly rebellious about… well, about being in a meadow. Bit of waffle but it was a little straight for my liking is the point I am very tenuously making.
"Take Five" - I definitely massacred this on the trumpet as a kid. fun times.
Ultimatelay fantasic sounds for the era and a fun one to listen to. Not sure it quite captivates me but very very solid. 3 is harsh but its a 5 start system!
Black Sabbath
4/5
First song is great. Like a dark meditation and probably best song on album.
I can see how people learning the guitar would love this stuff. Steady rocky riffs and when you overlay Ozzy you get instantly elevated to rock god.
Few songs interlaced with some great guitar sections but ultimately the magic is when Ozzy comes in. Great voice and suits this church of rock / dark world style.
Great stuff and RIP!
Cornershop
2/5
It's like the equivalent of the window tax in the 17th century. Just this time it's on lyrics, was the writer on commission for each unique verse so the band's saved money by just repeating them?
Maybe that's why they turned to Indian in the middle. Nobody would have know it's the same words they already paid for?
Honestly the Indian stuff and the lady singer gave them something to get a star behind bottom feeder. Loved the bit of Sitar rifting!
Rest of it is soft mush.
Secondly it's just so wimpy and rubbish.
Thelonious Monk
3/5
I personally don't think this gave me a clear emotional wow factor. There are sections that are technically brilliant, and the Piano / drums in particular seems to be being used to excellent effect.
There are times (more often than not) that this seems more of a Jam session which to me means I lose the depth of the album and its wider connection to a theme or feeling.
It's a bit like break dancing. They skat about on their heads and we are in awe of their moves and skill. However, after the 100th spin, twist and flip it just becomes a repeating theme. Just doesn't quite hit the mark for me despite its clear musical genius.
Billy Joel
4/5
Interesting album. Its not actually that common to have a "random" album come up that you not only know to a large extent but it also delivers some consistant quality throughout. Even my favourite bands from the past are routinely dissappointing me with albums packing a couple of bangers only to distroy the rest of the album!
I dont think this is my go to music style and it does show its age a bit. It is however a enjoyable divergence that immediately gets you engaged in the music so for that reason a solid album I think. Its not top but its above average.
Soft Machine
3/5
My immediate reaction on starting the album was wow this is cool. Can't lie though this is a difficult one.
By the second song I was getting frazzled and did find second song was many minutes too long. It didn't meaningfully deviate for me which weakens its appeal.
The singing then didn't help as didn't like that. I am honestly not sure what to say about this. I have gone through all the feelings on this album and just struggle to take it all in. It has the feeling of an experiment where I feel unable to stay fully connected.
The first song was the closest I came to genuinely connecting with the content and was some exceptional elements to that. Really innovative and captivating from the late 60s!!! Reminded me of Tropical Fuck Storm who effectively take guitar distortion (When saw them live) and they weave it into an atmospheric destructive noise which is aggressive but trance inducing. Great stuff that song but sadly not a uniform presence from this album, but it was more interesting than terrible for me so will give it its due. Astonishing!
Hugh Masekela
4/5
I did enjoy this album. It has an energy and vibrancy about it. the techniques and style resonnnate with me. Thats the key positive as lots of skill and dynamic about it.
Some exceptional intersections with the sax and drums in particular.
There was lots of pace changes across the songs. My only complaint would be once it hits its high notes it does seems similar to me across the songs so can become background if your not paying attention to the detail.
I think get in the mood and settle down and this will swallow you into a very reasonable music fusion fest embrace.
Robert Wyatt
2/5
The music feels soft and weak, flip-flopping between jazz and an overly sentimental ballad. It has the vibe of something where they’ve thrown the kitchen sink at it, hoping something sticks. Unfortunately, this just makes it feel even more a drone fest for me.
Shonestly? Not for me. Shanks, but no shanks.
Beatles
3/5
Such a well crafted album which just seems to work and not a song out of place. Any divergence is welcome and connected and its just plucks along at a jolly pace captivating you at every turn. Slightly whacky interjections here and there but they work.
That said while I would not disagree with people this is a top tier album and for the time even more so. However my reviews are from my perspective not as a critic. On that point for my taste this is average generic music (albiet very good music).
4/5
I am not a DB superfan and I might be being rude to folk music but he has that style of singing which does grate on me at times.
Anyway that said in terms of a mega pop album I think this sets itself aside from others. Intersting as not long listened to Abbey Road / Beatles which is arguably another masterpeice of pop history. I personaly rate this higher as it is more engaging as an album and the songs entirely complement each other (And extremely limited weakness across the range). It was immediately striking how the simplicity of the first song started with the bass hits on the drums. It sounded great and hooked me in. Slow plod that then eventually burst and that theme came in and out which I liked across the album.
I dont think I have heard DB push the limits of his voice to quite such an extent. The last song was an example of this. He must have given it his all. His voice was to be celebrated mostly on this album in its own right which is not my normal go to statement for DB.
Pop Album mastery of the Beatles, Edgy vision and musical / songwriting gift of Prince and just managed better than both.
If there is a better pop album I am not sure. Maybe Elton John??? Looking forward to hearing more DB. Has every right to be on this list.
Grizzly Bear
2/5
Some cool sounds here and there. Had the feel of going down a road and not getting anywhere or a dead end. I just have no idea what to get excited about here.
I could not deferentiate any speciifc element or theme that changed. Lowest level of dynamism which just left this very boring. I had to slog through it despite having no specifc issue with the instrument just the art.
Jeff Beck
3/5
When I was listening to this I was thinking this sounds like a Rod Stuart album. When I googled the album it was him on vocals! I had no idea Jeff Beck and him did anything together. I should not really have done this as I have beef with Rod Stuart (not all bad) so may effect my review.
Its astonishing this comes from the late 60's. Did they basically do everything in the 60's for which we are all now grateful for their contribution. Did humanity just wake up in the 60s!!!
By my own admission I prefer Rod's cancerous throat in a more rock centric context which is handy! The highlight of which is Becks guitair work which I can see why this pair worked as a collaboration. I would say its Rods luck to be part of this not the other way around mind.
Undoubtable blues theme comes in and out which works well for the most part. I did find it wafting on a bit long on some songs but the guitair was so good I didnt mind the less interesting vocals at times. The lyrics feel lazy and uninspired. They're just a wash of clichés that I've heard a thousand times before. Sadly once you hear the usual love ones over and over and even repeated on literally the next song you cant stop hearing the bloody things!
I will give them both their due this is great musical content for the 60's and would happily have gone to see this live had I the opportunity and not been 15 years prior to my birth!
Suede
3/5
I was a little dismissive at first but actually not a bad album. I would turn this on its head though not specifically a trend setting thing or even original. It to me had elements of what came before it not the other way around.
That said its a decent compilation of songs which for the most part were strong. I did like Pantomine Horse when I first heard it and while familiar in many ways you cant deny that Suede had an unique blend and characteristic.
They are not titans but a decent listen and not nullified by boring norms that are typical of such bands.
Duran Duran
3/5
I don't exactly know why but this album is highly familiar. I know most if not all the songs.
It strikes me that this is a well-crafted album but seems a little planted in the 80s. Hard to find a reasonable analogy but a testament to its quality isn't just measured by how well it translates 40 years later. It's possible for songs to be too advanced for their time or come in and out of fashion etc. They have been covered numerous times and listening to this I can see why as it's got great bones for almost any genre to gain its pop mastery and elevate them to the mainstream. Seems to have been well recorded as well as sounds very crisp.
Not exactly my usual listen but enjoyed buzzing along with it. Would certainly listen again without issue even if I would not normally seek it out.
Sigur Rós
3/5
Initial reaction was this is premium meditation songs. An upgrade from whale noises or the lapping waves of the sea. I did start thinking the vocals were also an annoying distraction that just repeats over the top. Caveat I was listening in the car which is poor audio for the first attempt!
Anyway ended up listening to the album twice with different points of reference e.g. car, during intense periods of work, chilling etc. Now if I was wanting to chill or have as background for focus I think this fulfils the brief well. I did however find that if I wanted to immerse in the music I found it was equal measure annoying as stimulating as different parts did repeat and become cumbersome so had a simple foundation for each song. However musically they did add depth to the song with the different sounds and interplay of vocals etc.
On balance a very interesting album that I would not naturally gravitate to but for which I am better off as a result of 1001. A must to re-visit I think but elements of it for now which niggle at me which prevent me from elevating this to the top tier in my rotation.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Quite a different style to the usual. Moody, gruff, spiritual and poetic in style. I actually found it quite chilled and engaging. Not sure it would go into regular rotation but it was a nice way to pass some time.
Ultimately the moody slow chatter only has so many dimensions and not enough overall for me and some elements follow a very simple pattern. Thankfully other elements do inject interest so overall its a decent package.
Small Faces
3/5
Odens nuts was briefed as being crazy. Not sure whats wrong with me but aside from a few suspect British accents I found it quite "normal"
Rene - Guitair work was brilliant. Went on for ages at the end to my advantage.
Lazy sunday afternoon is a well known song and to me the worst actually though I dont mind it. More pop intervention with the added sillyness that I dont need. The sillyness does indeed continue for odd bursts but if you ignore that quite a lot to like for me. Without Lazy Sunday Afternoon and the stupid voice overs I would happily give this a 4.
Elbow
3/5
At times I was expecting some pan pipes to cut in and was ready to get my mystical wolf howling T-shirt out.
Thankfully that vibe was only short lived (mainly first song) and it interweaved with some more substantial rock to counter the plinky plonkyness.
I don't think it does a great job as a rock band and doesn't quite blend to make it alternative well either. It does have promise but not enough of anything. I found I was at times getting bored as this went on.
Strong side of 2 or middle 3 star. Great voice as well. Credit overall as don't think its a bad album. Its the phrase "it's not you, it's me".
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Very rock and roll! Fast paced gritty explosion. Not sure if its supposed to but has a very American sound with the specific use of the guitair sound.
I really enjoyed it. Solid 3 but doesn't elicit any special feeling for me.
Supergrass
3/5
They are like the upbeat, good-natured younger brother of the indie / British scene—catchy and fun, but without the cool of the big boys.
Weak 3!
The The
3/5
If Marilyn Manson's "good" twin ever existed he would be the embodiment of this album. Lyrics and smattering of darkness throughout.
They have a good repertoire of instruments resembling pots and pans which is interesting but ultimately this doesnt shake the 80s at all. At times I hear George Michael as well.
Rich, fantastical and slightly odd. Best I can describe a solid album.
Aimee Mann
2/5
Sadly not really worth many words. I could easily list numerous similar better artists from 90s that I would have considered average let alone the best stuff from era. Not good enough! Fine but why bother.
Bob Dylan
2/5
I can't help but think more hysterical preacher than lyrical master. This album does nothing to bring me into the bob light. It's just too much repeated rambling to enjoy.
The extremely light blues / rock overtone again does nothing to blunt the theme. Even the signature songs fail to inspire any more than acceptable background for me which is just plodding and mono. The most dynamic element is a harmonica and frankly no song in my opinion can ever be carried by that.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
Were about during a critical phase of my music forming but, in all honesty, never really broke through when it would have been natural for them to. They had a few decent hits, but I put my lack of engagement in them down to some small points. Their music is not always coherent and when paired with limited vocal dynamics it doesn't help. They wheel out the same vocal "urgency" to add energy on a repeat cycle and it is a musical anchor for them. They have some very strong unique characteristics, but they feel unable to ride that fine line for very long. I think the highlight is the funky baseline they seem to generate but the crashy guitar at times then takes the final nail in their otherwise promising assemble. Dont hate anything really so giving a 3 but way too long this album.
Wu-Tang Clan
2/5
It is a decent album for sure. I personally struggle with this format though. The key selling point of albums like this is the rap and apart from that has zero musical merit from my perspective (repeated numb beats). Therefore makes this quite a slog to get through and the sillyness and macho element doesnt really appeal so struggle to find a connection with it.

I listened. And listened. Credit where it’s due.
Not sure when I’ll receive my medal? OBE for services to music, perhaps?
It’s like listening to a foreign singer trying to break into the English music market, using words out of context, incorrectly, or just outright making them up.
Immature nonsense that similarly comes from my young kids. My kids drive me mad by the way and less endearing than say baby babble. Maybe Shakira could get involved (another well-known artist with a limited grasp of the English language). They could collaborate on their “Le-do-lo-le-lo-le” — you know, “my breasts are small and humble” and all that jazz.
Get a child on a keyboard and boom — another entry sorted for 1002. How. Baa, naa, naaaaaaah. NO!!!
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2/5
Slightly over synthed for my liking. I can't find any offence in this music. It starts pretty well with the 2 very recognisable songs. It just doesn't fit into my narrow rock expectations and a bit disco vibe which managed to get worse in that it loses the energy and goes pretty limp wristed very quickly in the second half. Not something I can say I wouldn't listen to but just doesn't capture me so a very harsh 2.

As a teenager I remember buying this album on a whim to push my boundaries and to try something new... well fast forward 2 decades and seems I am at it again.
Should have invested my money in google instead of this album or something but anyway I am not in the mood for high energy funk on repeat. It eats my soul and any that remains in this music. It's not bad in isolated bursts which maybe is what caught me in its funky web all those years ago but eventually the rot sets in with me. Love the didgeridoo on "Didgin' Out" though nice touch. Just as an album despite its many musical talents and merits is a miss.

I would have been a new born when this was climbing the charts.
OK its fun I guess and has some playful lyrics. A geek that doesnt want some lovin. Something about bopping ones self.
Its a bit self indulgent energy. Its OK. Funny as Duran Duran immediately came on after this. Now they can do pop and immediately galvanise my feeling on this! Harsh 2 but potential not realised here.
David Bowie
Jeff Buckley
5/5
Not my first stab at this album so had time to percolate my soul. I think it needs that effort and commitment to fully appreciate whats on offer.
No one style describes this and its complex and intricate weaving of musical contributions amongst the band.
Just when I think its getting a little weak the song pivots and hits you over the head with its brash verse.
Like other albums that have hit the top note for me it just manages a different level of atmosphere. Like a church or some solid emotional reaction, it just has presence.
Meat Puppets

The Short Version:
Get ready for punk, grunge, and country fusion with a vocalist who sounds like he's crying to his mummy.
The Long Version:
It jumps so many genres that for the first few seconds of each track, you're just trying to figure out what the hell you're listening to.
Just when you think you've got it pegged, maybe with a nice, familiar twang that makes you wonder if a banjo is about to join the party, BAM! It whips back around, and suddenly you're hearing Nirvana. Literally. In the track "Plateau," I was half-expecting Kurt Cobain to materialise. The best part? It's like Nirvana, but without the messy "crash and distortion".
(UPDATE: I just got to "Lake of Fire" and discovered that Nirvana covered them. WTF?!)
Now, if I had to find a negative and it's a stretch it's the sheer, unadulterated chaos of the genre choices. I genuinely enjoyed basically all of it, having never heard it before. I mean, the sloppy vocals on some songs like "Climbing" sound like a man mid-meltdown, and I have no fathomable idea why I was able to get past that. But I did.
I can barely hate anything on this record. It's a mad, mad album with absolutely no plan, no genre to target, and no respect for your expectations. And that, made it super cool to listen to. These guys came out over 40 years ago and shows what sticking a finger up to the genre can do (and lots of drugs).
Elvis Presley
2/5
Cruise control is hit that doesn't showcase Elvis' talents. The tools are there just not being well utilised.
It took 11 or so songs to change gear into anything meaningful and dynamic. OK he does love worble like no other but that's not enough on this one.
I would certainly enjoy listening to individual songs but as an album while I take no offence whatsoever from it as background its highly unlikely I would specifically seek it out hence the low score.
Sorry hound dog you deserve better from me.
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
Far better than I was expecting. I remember being exposed to TSP in my late teens and early twenties maybe I listened to later iterations of the band's sound and missed this specifically. I did like them, but personally never fully engaged.
They have a very unique take on alternative, heavy-ish rock, and they’re adept at transitioning carefully between the high and low points. This prevents the music from becoming fatiguing or lacking in dynamic range.
“Hummer,” for example, features some lovely rolling drums paired with high guitar plucks, perfectly isolated to create a distinctive and careful end to the song.
Some of their sound reminds me of The Stone Roses, who may have been active around a similar time. “Rocket” is a great showcase of this, with its metronomic guitar and drum foundation, complemented by the addition of well injected synth. Again, highlights their variation across songs, while still remaining coherent with what came before. I think with the vocals and better variety beats the Stone Roses. As an album especially smashes SR.
"Soma" just turns the concept on its head with its slow deliberate dyfunctional pained start. It was almost touching in feel then lets you feel the pain as the song goes on. Probably my favourite and just captured so many great sounds along the way.
In conclusion a fantastic album. Deft, careful and heavy in equal measure. So pleased to have re-connected with the band in this way.
Sorry for long review had to listen more than 3 times to be sure it was worthy of the fantasic 5! The length of the album nearly becoming a prohibitive point. If they filtered out the odd song and consolidated I might have come to the conclusion quicker.

Landmark 90s album which is in effect a pop masterclass so much as it did the job in terms of commercial and wide appeal on a giant scale for the decade. tick.
I dont give points for the band sorting themselves out or it being their best mind!
I just find this is a pervasive, heavy atmosphere that never lifts. Its a singular contribution of monotonous technical / clinical acoustic instrumentation.
I just dont feed into the energy it provides and not sure I want to have any emotional investment in it.
Tim Buckley
2/5
Sad: Vocals didn't always find their sparkle and was a tad strained and slow in parts creating a nasty tone that really killed it for me. It was definitely the lesser party compared to the often-excellent musical accompaniment. Typical of what I expect from folky stuff for my taste but in this case with way more vocal potential on offer.
Happy: The Gypo song gave some much needed energy into the otherwise psychedelic slop.
It's an interesting crossover of styles and annoys me as this is an absolute melting pot of possibilities missed in my mind.
The Byrds
2/5
This album presents a curious paradox for me: It is an objectively good piece of work that fails to generate any personal connection. The music, a repetitition of jangly songs, feels like a stuck record, offering a perfectly reasonable soundscape that simply doesn't resonate. It's an odd and disengaging experience, as it provokes no reaction beyond indifference. In fact, the only song that manages to break through the mundane with a jarring lo-fi quality, sounding as if it were recorded on a phone, and yet it's the one I can tolerate. Ultimately, this is an album that leaves me wondering why on a personal level. I was going to give it a 1 but I hold that prize for only the most worthy!
Everything But The Girl

Assume I hate mushrooms. You present me with a perfectly reasonable mushroom and ask me what I think of it
What should I say...
My answer its a perfectly reasonable mushroom but no thanks. I cant reasonably hate something that is objectively good can I? I suppose I could give a slightly personaly view point explaining my preference to not eat something because of the texture or whatever but pretty weak.
However If said mushroom had wierd marks or dirt on it on the other hand I might be able to join the debate of my dislike of the specific mushroom and describe it.
Peace and love to all mushrooms!
Beck
3/5
I did like the more heavy leaning songs but most of it fell a little flat for me. I just dont find the overlay plod of the lyrics helps. Its like a dull march with some sparkle thrown on top with some heavy riff to try and get the audiance to stick. I am captivated for about 5 seconds then drop off again.
Having never listened to this I was mildly excited to see what this had to offer from Beck. Not sure I recognise this in any meaningful way from what I knew.
It was interesting in that the songs had quite a stylistic variance. I dont mind that as still seemed to have a pattern I could appreciate that unified it. "Hell Yes" was very different for example from most of it. Bit of a R&B / pop vibe about it and hear other songs in it but as this is a mid 00's album doubt it was trail blazing.
Its attempt at the moody / bleak just never fully cut through. More towards that side of the fence was "Broken Drum". I actually hope we have more of Beck as some interesting potential but not really present in enough detail for this. 3 as it narrowly avoids the typical beige fodder.
Wilco
3/5
It has a lot of atmosphere and manages to capture the solitude of the artist's vision with a slow deepening eerie vibe. In some songs like "Poor places" it has a stark chalk board moment with the sound which while slightly annoying adds to the ambiance and doomy feel. And the songs have an excellent rolling long lingering synth sound often piling on yet more depth as we reach the natural end of the album.
The last song just takes the above and pulls it deeper into the designed abyss. THE END.
Sadly, I don't like the vocals on this and it stained an otherwise interesting album for my personal taste.
Norah Jones
2/5
This is the kind of music you put on when you want your plants to feel something, but not too much.
Justification the ablum is a blob of Norah slow whaling in a beautiful monotone.
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
3/5
Typical Blur / British style with a little doom added on top.
It only took 2 songs to make me realise I was listening to some form of blur (as despite a broad mix of individuals Damon's touch shines through).
Its a little sad chorus for me like "Hurculean" - Its like the sob story never ends rather than being a feature.
Ultimately not a bad album but very average.
Ministry
3/5
Having been impressed by slipknot album earlier in my rotation I was ready to dive in. I would argue slipknot has more energy. I think the key distinction for me is the melodic nature of slipknot Vs Ministry. Ministry has a more metronome thrash with maybe a more developed lyrical overtone.
I think ministry has some great songs and maybe industrial side I don't prefer. Individual great songs but overall I have to peg it down Vs slippy.
Elvis Costello
3/5
Bit dated for me but for it's time has a cool feel and seemed to blend styles which presumably was innovative. Not compelling enough for me. 2/3
The Strokes
4/5
Very basic production to my ear and I did detect a little bit of crap recording but might just be me. For this reason I do find it can either pass me by or occassionally feel tiring to listen to as the components dont stand out nicely or distort.
This is a shame as whats on offer is decent and the album takes its relationship struggle on its little journey with a coherent song list. Its very short so easy to let it zip by but helped by its snazzy little riffs scattered about. First time around I literally heard nothing as was working hard and had to come back to it.
In a way I feel I have exhausted this album a little as hit me at the right time in my youth. Its a weak 4 now but will give it its due.
Malcolm McLaren
4/5
I quite enjoyed this in a perverse way. Hard to explain.
"Double Dutch" catchy song that was like watching Simba skip across the African savanna. Then you get a weird novelty song that is some kind of Cuban / Spanish version of a Rumba.
They manage to mash all the genres I typically hate and make something enjoyable. For its age and captivating theatre, I like it. Would be the only pop, hip hop / rap I think I might actually tolerate as a live act.
James Taylor
3/5
Very bland for me and didnt stir much reaction. Nothing wrong with it but a weak 3 on basis it sounded pretty dated, rarely inspiring and after trying to listen to it nearly twice I thought if it cant capture me I need to give up. Cant say is terrible though.
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
Decent soul / funk in general. Not for my personal taste however and dont typically like this genre.
Ultimately too many wierd songs like "runnin away". The voice is annoying. Secondly the album just goes on and on.
Base funk is comendable. Playing the base guitair like that is something! E.g. "Do you know what"
Sex Pistols
3/5
Deserve their place in history and to some extent in time.
I think for the genre they hit the right notes and for that they have mastery especially how they came about it. Where maybe they lose out Vs modern iterations is the musicality. I like the raw striped back vibe as it suits the material but they don't shine here and maybe not the point. On point for genre topping vocal spirit 4. For me however 3.
Carole King
4/5
Easy to dismiss as not my usual play. I started listening in a noisy environment so had to start again. I am pleased I did as it was worth a little investment. It was the strong Piano that was reedeming for me and demanded some attention.
"Way over yonder", "You've got a friend" and countless more high-feeling of emotion.
This album just got better too with some bangers scattered about that I recognised and had a fantastic finale.
I struggled to evaluate this album as not my usual listen and dont tend to find the genre appealing as unconvincing emotion just makes it feel wet and a major turn off. Credit to King as this has the energy needed to remain convincing.
Genesis
4/5
100% theater with the wild and wacky oddities thrown in along the way, which I really liked and was a highlight. The crazier, the better was the theme for me on this album.
Every song had depth; nothing seemed static for long, and every detail in a song gave a new dimension to the 'story' and effect.
On the alternative front it gave so much. At times sounded like the Beatles and Led Zeplin all in one (E.g. "Broadway Melody") while wrapped in their own distinctive veil.
A fascinating and clever album. I don't love all of it (there was a lot), but it's a fantastic medley of the absurd, mental, and atmospheric in perfect harmony.
Neil Young
3/5
This album started strong, though I knew it was only a matter of time before the usual harmonica assault and overly drab, folky-wokey material arrived. He thankfully held back the strained "Mickey Mouse" vocal quality that often soured his other work. It’s truly amazing how only Neil Young can take such a foundation of excellence and sabotage it so effortlessly.
I was dreading this, but was genuinely pleasantly surprised by the prominent rock and roll/blues vibe. The backing band is great, which helped me buzz along nicely until the slight dive-bomb at the end. Despite the final moments of excess "floppiness and sheep baaaaaah," it was a decent listen.
The Only Ones
4/5
The Only Ones’ is a compelling listening experience, primarily defined by its effortlessly chilled demeanor and strong musical ambition. The immediate highlight is undoubtedly the great musical epics scattered throughout the songs. Intricate arrangements that suddenly soar into unexpected, brilliant instrumental passages. This blend of raw energy and complexity elevates the album beyond the standard fare.
Further rounding out this distinctive sound are the vocals. Taken together, the melodic peaks and that odd vocal delivery make this an interesting cool album experience. Almost pop like at times. E.g. "Creature of Doom"
Music moments that take you unaware and give you something to feel and think about. Imperfect music to discover. - THIS #1001
I was won over by "The Beast" to pip a 4.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Is a challenging listen for me as the unitiated. Not because it's bad, but because it's so unconventional. It's not traditional music in the usual sense, yet Cohen somehow extracts profound emotion and atmosphere from the barest arrangements. You don’t have to love it to appreciate how much he achieves with so little.
Somewhere between a 3 and 4, depends on the mood, the moment, even the verse. Let’s just call it good and leave it at that.
The Smiths
4/5
Fantastic album of contradictions and absrudity. The Smiths dont follow the norms and in a way shouldnt work. I dont really know anything about the band members but their brilliance is less so about them individually but about how well the concept is literally strung together. They must simply have an coherent artistic vision as it just works (Creates a warm space for the top lyrics).
The record is wonderfully volatile, often pivoting into unexpected "micro-places" with a left-field energy. This morphing nature is clearest in tracks like "Barbarism Begins at Home," which features a repetitive, almost absurd rhythmic loop and those odd, barking sounds (who let the dogs out vibe)! Yet, the entire track is so impeccably well-crafted that its strangeness is not just forgiven, but celebrated as a key part of the genius.
Unpredictability and emotional depth make this a rewarding, challenging and fun listen.
The Residents
1/5
The challenge of reviewing this lies in its non-conventional standards. Nothing 'stands up' because the music operates from an entirely different premise. To my ears, the disparate parts, the absurd vocalisations, do not cohere into anything resembling an engaging song. It feels less like an attempt at popular music and more like an alien cultural artifact. A piece of music that is maybe 'good' within a closed context?
Cat Stevens
2/5
You are treated to a sequence of tracks that feel less like individual compositions and more like variations on a theme. An exercise where the speed and volume are the only variables.
The closest to a shift is "On the road to find out" which has a more angry energy which finally made me wake up.
Mildly entertaining blandness. The components are all there, but they rarely cohere into anything that transcends the calculated comfort.
Is this folk pop? Not sure it was ever going to win me over.
Neil Young
3/5
Again!! I really like the musicians I just find some offence with the vocals. I dont care if the lyrics are profound, artistic, shakespearean or whatever. His voice just pisses all over the musical fire.
Can somone just re-do all these albums just without Neil singing. Find someone else please. I mean how much better does a song need to be "Vampire Blues" is great.
The White Stripes
4/5
Elephant is a quintessential White Stripes album, showcasing their signature garage-rock sound. This album demonstrates a consistant ambition, refining a simple, blues-infused formula and it remains a powerful statement.
Reasonable for someone to state their stripped-back style at this stage as a tired gimmick, but I can see how it was culturally significant.
For me, Jack White's brilliance lies not just within the White Stripes but also in his willingness to experiment beyond them. This album is the perfect culmination of that core vision before he expanded his creative skills across a wider musical spectrum.
Michael Jackson
3/5
High: Dont stop til you get enough has a lot of Disco energy to last me forever.
Low: Working day and night is weaker for me but mainly because I dont particularly like maximum funk.
I feel bad as this is probably top 70s dance perfection...however when I am being honest, I came to love the Michael Jackson that had fully devolved into a weird little music goblin. This is the "pure" stuff, and I just prefer the later, deranged-self stuff. Not sure this ages well either.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
A band I seem to like in isolation with certain stronger songs but never dived completely in. Its decent and innovative sound with a screech that only she could deliver in a refined way.
Kind of sums up the band as a bit of a contradiction. They are raw yet delivered with a certain clinical polish and precision. Sometimes too metronomic.
"Man" I liked in some ways more vs the more formulaic "Y Control" but then "Tick" and "Black Tongue" let the vocals stretch more but then can be like a jack hammer so can get wearing to some extent.
I struggle to review this as I do like elements of it but for me it deserves a low 4 or high 3...Probably!
Peter Gabriel
3/5
So genesis vibes (my mum confirmed this thought / connection as she has album in her collection and happened to see her on same day) and we got a little Babooshka from Kate Bush no less.
Not sure on the Kate input as was just as engaging as listening to your voice in a tunnel. ECHO...Echo....echo.
I think this has aged a bit but has interesting elements. Its solid in almost all regards. Cant say I hate anything. I just think the plinky plonky, pan pibe / bells things just isnt for me. Its like your favourite pants that have been in the wash with that bright red jumper. I will wear the pants as nothing wrong with them but that day something changed!
Black Flag
2/5
I'm not sure about this industrial punk. It's a bit too shouty, and they seemed to favor irritating, shouted playback after the main vocalist. This often ruined any intended effect.
It may be influential for the genre, but there's too much uncoordinated thrashing for my liking. This made me disengage with their "art", and I suspect some interesting politics or opinions were completely lost on me as a result.
Paul Simon
4/5
Jesus christ an accordion on the very first song. I nearly gave up there and then!
After I calmed down I then realised there was an equally odd bass effect on first track. Like a dodgy bass horn or something. Thankfully the bass then becomes integral to the album creating a major contribution to the rambling and lively melody and contrasts with the guitair plucks perfectly.
I dont think this album is amazing but it just does what it does so well. OK its not super diverse but it has a fun energy and Simon I think has his unique way of delivery which is excellent. To me it has aged but a popular powerhouse. Writing this review didnt take effort as once again banging that polished 80s drum of popular music endured for me.
Radiohead
5/5
This is an extremely difficult album to review. I need more time really to give this a good crack.
That said what I can tell for now is this album has a wider identify. The songs have their own unique play on things and differ in many ways musically. For example, "There There" has this prominent guitar lead and even has time to elevate it at the end with some pretty decent rock highlights. In contrast you have songs that have an overly synth effects toolbox (Literally the song before would be a good example or "Myxomatosis"). Then the song after ("I Will") was a slow dragged-out Thom vocal meander with almost no meaningful rhythm component. Next song, percussion comes immediately back in, and we have a rhythm section again. "Wolf at the door" I would not even know was a Radiohead song immediately.
In summary I don't think it is as good as Kid A and seems a more random selection of musical intent and does seem to draw upon numerous more individual component tools. That said I actually enjoyed that element of this album in its own right vs others but I just don't feel this has the spectacular visceral complement that really grabbed me in Kid A for example.
Guitar (There there), drums (sit down stand up), vocals (Sail to the moon), synth (the gloaming) - To blend to such good effect I eventually landed on a 5. I rounded up.
Travis
2/5
I have no issue with the muscians (Or vocals) just the application. Some of the potential skill is excellent and the craft is clean. Its like a TikTok, it wont rot your brain but it is a quick flash of content but otherwise leaves you wanting.
I had this album growing up (not sure if I purchased or was given). At the time not sure I would have declared this fact to anyone as it was never a happy companion of mine "guilty pleasure" or otherwise.
Shame I or the person that gave it to me didnt have the sense to give me a (any) Radiohead album instead!
Tina Turner
3/5
All the usual 80's attributes
- Great production
- Maximum energy and power
- Synthtastic
- Not aged spectacularly but relatively timeless appeal
- Chucked in a few now niche instrument solos (E.g. Sax)
Tick, tick, tick. Standout impressive vocals.
For my taste overly pop orientated. Cant really see myself putting this in the rotation but a novelty and interest to listen again.
ABBA
2/5
Not sure about this Euro pop. It's a cheese fest that only really has a home in theatre or some weak pop competition.
It's an obsessive jolly/pop fest but for me a bit like commending a serial killer for being fabulous at it.
Ok they are good at it. Just a shame some songs were excruciating - e.g. "Tiger"
Premium Eurovision wankers!
Elton John
3/5
I dont know this album well but for me this sounded like an Elton John that had all the talent and ability to curate music within himself (or around him) but just without the final polish that made him a great.
When I broke this down we had some lyrically excellent songs, different melody compositions which showcase individuals musical talent, amazing show pieces etc. It just doesnt come together perfectly in my opinion.
Just not enough high quality bangers in the album to elevate this. Tiny Dancer was the one strong standout with a few more minor standouts amongst it but not a complete package.
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
Decent album with variety especially the first third. I did feel some weak sings that let the side down however. Mamunia is an example as not sure why it has a place amongst this and while the Beatles used obscure to their advantage it was a bit like a missfire fire on this. Hey ho being another "broken record" lyric that didn't enamour me to things either.
On the whole solid album, close but no cigar.
Cheap Trick
3/5
Enjoyed this as it seemed fairly niche yet had tracks of great familiarity which is either credit to them or the slightly mainstream nature of it.
It's easy to absorb which means it may not have staying power but for me to have this new experience was refreshing and different. Live dimension was interesting and had great vibrancy to it.
It started a little more heavy / rustic which I prefer but can't hide I enjoyed the riffy more pop central ones in the middle.
Might come back as a worthy interest point.
Aerosmith
4/5
I purchased this album as part of a 3 album aerosmith multi-pack when I was about 15 on a whim. Funny as even that long ago it was old. I was pleased as got exposed to probably the beginning of what made Aerosmith the powerhouse they are now regarded as.
I dont think I would ever consider Aerosmith amazing but what they gave me certainly (amongst others) is a heavy rock / metal link which featured heavily for me at this time. I would have been experimenting with all sorts around this era like Led zep, Van Halen, Black sabbath etc. 100% Aerosmith formed part of that "linking" me backwards and forwards in and around this genre. I can see many heavy rock bands I came to like in this album.
Until I re-listened to this album I dont think I ever gave it any credit in my music journey until now. Interesting retrospective. It is not a dominant 4 but I think I can sneek this one in based on its wide scope and includes some significant top tracks.
Elvis Costello
2/5
I think I dislike the feeling generated rather than the music specifically. It seems to be a un-happy common theme with Elvis Costello and me.
I find an energy and happiness that lifts the album and lets it buzz along on its cool little journey...
I guess the problem some may appreciate this heightened buzzy persona as part of his signature appeal I find the result some form of annoying posturing or fakeness. Some people like fake smiles and high fives and some dont. Not sure I am being fair here but I simply cannot explain it in any other way.
The slow parts are dull and the fast annoying and repetitive (like a high five drum). Not a winner for me.
Kendrick Lamar
2/5
I really tried with this album and listened to some of it more than once. Have to open with not my thing and I do get frustrated with the genre and the excessive need to do the usual gangster bingo of key buzz words.
That said it was interesting as the "art" wrestled with the realities of their life and the grounding nature of his mum (I think) coming in and out of the music which seemed quite prominent to me.
Its also very stark contrast to other rap where I have been highly disengaged where as this had a better flow musically and I enjoyed the "ether" for which the content was wrapped.
I think worthy of some more time to invest and if nothing else its now my top pick should any of my G friends come round for tea!
Johnny Cash
2/5
Manages to start with some pretty gruff atmospheric leathery vocals which surprised me with a level of enjoyment. There were even some Nick Cave style parts which took me back with reasonable enjoyment (I mean it literally sounded like him which I liked). Then it either dive bombed or I got tired of the soft melodramatic ramblings.
OK he can add his Gruffalo power and emotion to pretty much anything it seems but in the end the intensity and delivery killed it.
I could have given this a 3 had it not been for some terrible songs amongst better and this style for the most part not resonating with me. I kind of want to be a Cash convert but I am yet to find my calling.
Belle & Sebastian
1/5
Soft indie band crying over spilt milk. Everything that was bad about the 90's exists here.
Electronic renaisance - What is this rubbish it literally asualted my ears.
Guitair style really grates for me as its a jolly strumming that just never ends or varies. typical of the genre and time.
Best thing about this album is the album cover!
Booker T. & The MG's
3/5
The album features some classics (like "Green Onions") and great organ and guitar craft.
It has a really cool funk with great energy at times. I particularly enjoyed "I Got a Woman."
Despite the aged sound of some tracks, this didn't take long to evaporate. However, it's telling that such a short album feels like it goes on too long. I don't believe this is due to bad songs, as there are no weak ones. The problem lies in the delivery. It's excellent, but only in one dimension. It lacks the mood, scale, or atmosphere to elevate it. It becomes a great background album, but listening to it intensely as I did, I couldn't score it as high as I might have initially thought.
Pet Shop Boys
1/5
Normally with the worst albums I can critically listen and find some redeeming feature. On this nothing.
Its a synth / club thing hugged in a commerical pop embrace. Its boring, repetitive and I cant even stand it as background.
When you find music annoying in so many dimmensions it becomes lifeless and takes something away from you. Interesting as well it wasnt a slow death it was immediate for me I hated it from the minute it started.
Janis Joplin
4/5
Vocal range was impressive. "A woman Left lonely" very soft then as example "half moon" - Quite funky with some solid piano and varied elements.
"Me and bobby McGee" - Complete vocal change again
Common theme is mega energy and the ability to transition it to maximum effect to deliver emotional dimension which is rarely pulled off so well. For sure the USP of this album.
The main negative / oddity is the production is excellent for the most part as her vocals a bit like a distoried guitair if not held in check can become tiring. I think they just about strike the right balance here but close at times.
Paul Simon
3/5
Interesting album which I found myself phasing in and out of with regard to my enjoyment.
The plus for me was the often stripped back arrangement which allowed the unique elements to shine, and they captured the tones and depth of the featured as a result. It made some of the guitar elements in particular very engaging. Ultimately well put together.
I think the key downside and probably which dated some of the songs was the incessant need to throw the kitchen sink at it with regard to the depth and variety of musical instruments on offer. From maraca to flutes. They have experimented themselves out of a 4 in my opinion here.
Living Colour
3/5
Dont think I have heard most of this before. I have grown up on many similar iterations of glam rock and many become dated or sound overly pop tastic. I think its a credit to this slightly odd album that they remain fresh enough.
They use different music forms to keep this album from going stale and while I love the over the top guitair I think the highlight is the powerful vocals but importantly they are really clean so avoids becoming strained or annoying.
I enjoyed this and would rate some songs a 4 and others a 3. Hard to place it. Going to be harsh for now...
Leftfield
1/5
I figured this would be a struggle as I dont find it easy to engage with club / house music. It does appear well crafted and the chosen electronic effects do inspire a level of passion and emotion.
The rub for me is its a layer cake of slightly unusuall sounds kept on in loop and built up and tweaked. Its clever but it just leaves me bored out of my brain.
Its occassional propgressive drum beats bring back a kind of youth PTSD like that first dodgy blue drink you threw up when 15. Unless I have some mind bending substances in my system not sure I would ever enjoy this.
I had to assign this the lowest order of my musical appreciation as it was just so hard to get through it. Odd 2 star song got drowned out in this epic. By the time I got to Black Flute the oppressive drum smashing nearly did me in and that was only half way through.

Not sure how much more you can stetch out doom as was achieved in the song "Round the Bend". Nothing is around the bend!
In fairness there is quite a lot of very beautiful sounds which wrap the bleak in a kind of blanket. Its warming in a way which I appreciated but only so much gentle guitair plucking I can accept if you dont transition somewhere.
"Already Dead" - Had a pace I appreciated as it maintained the pain but without the drawn out nature I came to expect. Each note and lyric bounced onward which seemed missing elsewhere.
The good news I dont find this particularly offensive listening which is handy. I could let this wash over me and allow the odd golden nugget to get through which do exist. It was oddly relaxing in the end but ultimately a miss to break through the low middle music field. Rounded up!
AC/DC

This album is formulaic riff tastic feast for the heavy rock fan.
I cant honestly say that this is a masterpiece of musical tallent but in some ways the concept is excellently crafted. Its smashes fun and delivers a package that is worthy of the genre and its hall of fame.
I cant help but be uplifted when I hear AC/DC and their well known bangers. The thing with this album is they just keep coming and nothing really lets the album down as a whole. Its simple composition just does the job really well.

Interesting album. I wouldnt say I disliked any song. Some were a bit whacky but didnt spoil the overall interest to me. "drivin" and "Shes bought a hat like princess" did test my nerve (wierd style and instruments) but actually it added to the appeal of the album in a way. There was also vocal and lyrical interest throughout. Only odd song were the vocals sounded strained but otherwise they varied the delivery quite considerably while maintaining a polished delivery.
My view of the kinks is far from this album so was a pleasant surprise. I wonder if I just missed it or if this was a showcase of the best of the kinks.
Enjoyed the finale of Australia. Great musicmanship on that! Very strong 3.

This could be the most refined lyrical genius known to man but through my dumb English ears the music doesnt particularly inspire me which is a shame.
Its not so much its dated its just not the kind of acoustic guitair I enjoy and more of a cultural novelty which I fail to appreciate.
I also feel this probably lead some musical innovation but to my ears it was light touch so didnt really shine in this regard either. Nothing wrong with the music though and the craft.

Now I respect the Jazz genre for its wealth of tallent just not sure this is my grove. Grove is probably a good summary of my view of this album as its stuck in one.
It resonnates as spunky background music from SHAFT or something but doesnt have that wider apeal to me.

I think lust for life is a crap song. Its basic drivel. The only artist that does that style worse is Bruce Springsteen.
Recording is dire as well (though by all accounts it has mixed review in that its a "style" less so than the "quality"). Sixteen onwards was awful and was horrible to the ears as a result.
Mercifully the songs do improve and "The Passenger" elevates things slightly but cant help but think its on a conveyer belt of sound. The songs vary only by how long the belt is. I do like "Success" as well maybe because its got a more prounouced blues feel to it and has a more rock theme.
Undeniable that Bowie had an influence here but nothing inspired me particularly and oddly the biggest surprise was that I didnt like it. He has the potential I just dont think the package works for me personally.

Enjoy this fragmented album. The concepts in this are undoubtedly experimental and they land some major influences here to my ears.
Even the jollier instrumental sections with flutes and plinky plonks I enjoyed for its skill. It was a mastery of erratic yet melodic. It always maintained a composure which allowed the music to remain engaging and fluid while also having different tempos and themes.
Really hard to rate as there are times that you feel you are listening to a backing sound rather than a set of music tracks. Then each track has its oddities and large length which make listening to distinct tracks an irrelevance.
For its extremely interesting concept, I went back to for at least 4 times I have to bump it up to 4. Clearly so much to it. Very interesting find I have never heard of before.

"Adult books" was weak. It was like a dodgy country and western moderate punk song. I find the male vocal slightly pathetic and most of the songs are just about saying things slightly louder and doesnt appeal to me as a punk item. Its not very interesting or revolutionary. Nothing particularly wrong with it but as a package its less for being punk rather than more.
Michael Jackson

More like a greatest hits this album.
"Baby be mine" and to a lesser extent "human nature" and "pretty Young Thing" etc . I think songs like this are much more dated in that they are very of the time (Like oldschool disco). Its what I dont like so much about the genre / artist.
Has to be said though this is otherwise an extremely strong album of near constant bangers. I feel a weak 4 is justified based on at least half the songs being spot on.

Not sure about this. Its a bit lazy indie band with a droning undertone.
Its not bad but it doesnt really go anywhere. It just makes me feel 90s indie but dont see how this is better than anything else at that time. If I was to compare to say Stone Roses or The Verve for example would I really prefer this. I dont think so and I dont see how this blazed a trail for anyone either.
Dusty Springfield

Excellent album that has a fair few well known songs. In some ways easy to review as its a showcase of an amazing voice and a composition that allows it to form a timeless appeal.
Some songs are a little slow for my taste but I think it just does enough to save the 4 as I cant really fault any specific song. While working I listened to it twice as it was just easy going.

So moody and emotional. Its a vast soundscape that draws you in. I love the deft tinkering on the cymbals. Unlike some Jazz it does have a story to tell and it does evolve through the album. It makes you want to listen to its changes and flow.
I enjoyed mulling this over on repeat and just seeing where it took me each time.
The Waterboys

I felt a little water boarded by this lot by the end of the second CD (special edition version). I think the problem I have is the genre is not my preferred so more of an effort to slog through it despite its obvious charm in parts.
It's clearly decent and many elements I engaged with, but it always felt off center for me personally. A symptom perhaps where traditional music ceases to thrive. I struggle to explain this, but I refer it to being like a cultural drag when the modern fusion misses the mark. Like when you see things historical as slightly silly or it signals some stereotype like "Ireland" or the "Shire".
When the energy level rose, I did find I was more intune with it and the fiddle in particular was cool in some songs (and whatever that weird guitar thing was). I do like a flute but this use case ended up giving more mystic meg vibes for some reason going back to my cultural drag remark that I cant explain fully.
I think I would need to work on this to digest it. I think this is worthy of some investment, but my gut is telling me to move on. I think this kind of musicianship is better suited to the pub or live music venue.
Arcade Fire

I find this a tad mono and at times also dull.
I can hear a lot of depth here with the overuse of instruments to make a darker and more atmospheric environment. Again more often overpowered by the lyrical and guitar drone.
I cant see me wanting to invest in this.
Todd Rundgren

This is really interesting as its chaotic. Its wierd as one minute you feel its off its head then the next its calm and balanced. Dogs giggling and the synthtastic "Flamingo". Then you have Something like "Just One Victory" which is pretty normal 70's almost pop track.
Oddly somehow despite this blending of the mind and musical genre it works and you never feel completely lost.
Possibly a little self indulgent but had it not been like that I dont think I would have rated it. Weak 4 but it gets there for me on basis there is a lot to it. Maybe I will come back and cement that view in time.
Curtis Mayfield

Recording is very clean which I like and its punchy base sound. I dont think the backing music is particularly exceptional though. Its rolling but repetative.
OK it has a unmistakeable funk / soul vibe and the pairing with the vocals / wind instruments is pretty optimal sound but its a bit slow on the transition for me.
It does allow the little details to shine in songs like "When Seasons Change" its very deliberate and slow with neat micro sparkles.
Ultimately not my taste. I would not turn it off but certainly middle of the road for me.

I found this album pleasant, which is a good start for a genre not well worn by myself. It had a gentle flow with a warm vibe about it (especially the vocal).
I do enjoy the delicate rolling plucks of the guitar and the odd nimble bass dropping in. It also had a variation of pace which was welcome (though predominently slow). It was this that kept its focus on my mind while I got on with things.
My main complaint is it failed to really find a massive shift in the presentation of the music. This lead it away from being majorly compelling. Perhaps a bit dull / simplistic in the end but in contradition a dull I quite enjoyed.

Well that was nice. Very wholesome music where I feel like I am being extremely good. Straight or not or even if aged or not I dont think it matters. The reason it is interesting is the craft they have especially with the vocal harmony and great layered sounds. At times its almost like a capella band.
They also have the novelty of adding in unusual instruments which I like and acoustic sounds are also strong.
A number of songs on this album which are a solid 4 but as an average I think there are some slightly average songs on here compared to the ones I love. However dont hate anything and enjoyed blasting through the album a couple of times.
