The music had its moments but even in trying to be satirical this came across as corny in a lot of moments. A fun one-time listen. 6/10

Name is familiar but do I know them? Slow Hip Hop and blues. Probably influenced a lot of bands. Talented maybe. Not my thing though.

Loved this album.

I had never heard of these guys before. This music made me move! I really liked this disc. I listened to the Expanded Version, which has many versions of several of their songs. It's a great showing of their creativity and command of different styles of music and recording.

I like it too much to be objective.

Definitely a 90s album. It was a decent album. Not sure why they felt the need to do a cover of the James Bond classic "We have all the time in the world."

An interesting mash-up of different genres but I didn't really care for it. It's been about a week since I listened to it so details are sparse but I think it was kind of uneven for me and I kind of struggled to finish it. There were some fun tracks I think but it didn't always work or come together for me. Also, not very interesting lyrically.

Cool hip-hop rock fusion sounds. Scooby Snacks is a great single. We Have All The Time In The World is a really refreshing mid album break.

Another band name that I've heard, but couldn't tell you a single song title. But that Scobby Snacks guitar part was sampled or used in movies a lot, I think. This band's rap/rock mix might've been cool in 1996 when this record was recorded. And there is a soul to this you wouldn't find in late-90s and early-00s rap rock. But I still don't really like the mix, and it's harder to stomach knowing what came immediately afterward. Thanks, Fred Durst and Kid Rock.

Perfect name for this group. I had heard several of these songs but forgotten all about them. I have nothing bad to say about this album, really. It's a fun combination of a lot of my favorite kinds of music.

Loads of fun it’s time, but really quite dull at times also. I’d never heard this album in full before. Until now I’d only ever heard the singles and to be honest,I got very little from this album beyond those.

Nostalgic as anything. I bounced around the limelight to loads of the tracks however it hasn't aged gracefully enough do get a 4.

Lots of fun but I definately used to hold this in higher regard than it actually deserved. In saying that there is lots to like and I enjoyed going back to it

Love the eclectic mash-up of styles on this album. I'm hearing hip hop, rock, rap, jazz, R&B, blues, funk, and even a bit of punk. Had not heard of these guys or their music before. Glad I have now!

Love the flows, love the instrument diversity. Based on the name, I was expecting some 80s new wave and was pleasantly surprised. Lot of sticky hooks on this record. Little long. Favorite tracks: "Scooby Snacks" ,"Crime and Punishment"

La critique que je m'apprête à rédiger ne sera pas tout à fait pertinente dans le sens où j'ai été confronté à un problème dont j'assume la responsabilité. En effet, je ne me suis rendu compte qu'au milieu de l'écoute que la lecture de cet album se faisait en mode aléatoire. J'étais dès lors totalement perdu. Vous savez pertinemment que je me dois d'activer cette option la plupart du temps pour m'entraîner à l'événement que nous attendons tous et qui se tiendra selon les dernières infos début 2024 ; je veux bien entendu parler du Grand Quiz du Générateur sur TF1 qui m'opposera bien sûr à ltrapeze. Je vous tiendrai informé sur le déroulement de l'émission dès que j'aurai du nouveau.

J'en ai rien a foutre et je suis une nouvelle fois très enervé envers Robert pour nous proposer un enième album dont tout le monde se fout completement. Je me garderai cependant d'insulter Robert, étant donné qu'il a hier confirmé le remboursement de mon livre des 1001 albums, qui comme vous le savez ne m'avait pas été delivré malgré des semaines d'attente. Un ouf de soulagement.

Kinda like a mix of ska and rap? Reminded me a little of like Atmosphere or 311? Enjoyed it.

I really like the blend of different styles here. An enjoyable listen and while the lyrical content is a little ridiculous it seems to be pretty tongue in cheek. Refreshing to have a band not take themselves too seriously.

A few fun, funky tracks on this album, but a lot of weak tracks too. Some of them were pretty dope, though!

I had a mate just after high school that used to play this - I'd forgotten it existed. I remember the title track but nothing else. Ok, I like that it's rap with an actual band behind it, much more interesting than what a lot of others were doing at the time. This was kinda right on that turning point as heaps of rap started just using real simple basslines as music, kinda throwing out all the cool samples and turntable stuff that made it cool a few years earlier. The band is good, they mix a whole heap of different genres but keep it funky and it always seems to work. ...except for the rap rock parts lol. That sorta thing hasn't aged well imo, was never going to. Or maybe that's just the shadow of cringey memories looming over me lol. But it's only in maybe 1-2 tracks and used pretty sparsely anyway. I also didn't realise that Scooby snacks was them - not sure how that escaped me, heard that song many times, it has that 90s swagger that I kinda miss, not in a nostalgic way but rather that I'm kinda sad people aren't doing it anymore. Naturally, being the mid-late 90s all the songs are about smoking weed... that's just how it was at the time. Except for the song about meth I guess lol. Seems a lot of the time this list just forces me to sit through 60s garbage rather than expand my mind, so it's cool to hear something that's not only mostly new to me, but that I'd also willingly listen to independently. 4/5.

If I could describe this album in one word it would be: cringey. The vocals aren't great, the lyrics go from awkward to terrible, and the melodies aren't anything to write home about. It's like the group thought they were these tough gangsters but they're just kind of a mess. Overall a really underwhelming album.

Pretty shit

I enjoyed this album. For me the music hit the right chords, the raps though mostly lightweight are fun and sometimes quite humorous. But it's the music that pulled me in and made for an enjoyable listening experience. 3.75 🌟

I find it interesting that I had never heard of or listened to these guys before, being so heavy into 311 and Sublime types. This was an enjoyable listen, but nothing that really hit home. Smoke Em and Scooby Snacks are the highlights of this record. This sounds like the band that opens for Sublime on tour and you think about buying their merch.

Rest of the album was pretty poor but scooby snacks will forever remain an absolute banger

Didn’t really get them the first time around and now they just feel dated to me and I still don’t get them. Sorry but it’s another meh.

I want to say 1001 albums is too many, but I don't think that's true. I guess I just think this one should not have made the cut. I feel like I want to check the credentials of whoever complied this list. I guess if you look at it strictly through the lens of whether you should listen to this album before you die, there is something interesting to note in remembering a moment in history where this was a reasonably plausible creative endeavor.

My best guess is that I've probably heard of something from this band, but maybe it wasn't from this album. The lyrics sank this album from almost being okay to low enough to get a "nope" from me. There is interesting music, but I generally have a hard time with lyrics that brag, and curse all at the same time. The music wasn't good enough to over look the lyrics. The pop culture references feel outdated too.

Surprisingly enjoyed this. I liked the mish mash of genres in the samples, you can tell that they have a wide range of influences. When I got to 'all the time in the world' I thought it sounded like a velvet underground song but it turned out to be a Louis Armstrong cover, very odd. The lyrics are mostly crap and the whiff of novelty hangs over a few of the songs which loses this a few stars.

The further this album went on the more I found myself willing it to produce one song that would justify its inclusion on this list. Imagine my heartbreak when fifty pointless minutes later, not a single nugget had emerged. Even the scooby snacks song is a lacklustre affair. Goddammit.

I liked the mixtures of sounds on this one.

Hard to imagine why Huey Morgan thought this bonged-out drudgery could be called fun lovin. Criminal, sure. They do their best to nestle awkwardly in an honourable tradition of stealing freely from their forebears; in this case the Beasties, Tarantino (I guess) and (don't ask me why anyone would want to do this) Red Hot Chilli Peppers. But in the same way that buying a Barcelona shirt with Messi on the back doesn't mean your first touch no longer stinks, Cosplaying as your favourite bands doesn't mean your music is any good. It really, really, really isn't.

I was really into the album at first and then it started to all blend together. It's a unique sound for sure but probably won't listen again

Faux gangsters - not awful but it's baffling to me how this album and group became successful. The harder grittier songs are better than the softer tracks but they are also more cringey. This is seen in all its glory on the best track: King of New York which utters the refrain "free John Gotti". Some decent tracks but zero realism which leaves me feeling empty.

Rap Rock, really, 1001? Heavily distorted guitars, really? Are these the fathers of white rap? The missing link between stereo mcs and kid rock, everlast, etc? I’d call this lounge rap, lots of loungey beats, but also, oddly, seems to celebrate criminality, but in a movie way, not a gangster rap way. The big hit scooby-snack song, definitely an homage to Tarantino, didn’t realize that until now. There are a few cool samples hidden in here, but overall, not for me. When the hit in this album was huge I remember reading that the lead singers dad played Mongo in blazing saddles. So I can’t help but imagine a bunch of Hollywood kids making this “rap” album. Who the fuck said sugar-gay?

I went into this with very low expectations. Then I was pleasantly caught off guard by Track 1, but then quickly realized I hated everything about this album.

Surprisingly, I like this album. Musically it's diverse, well performed. Not all rap, some melody, lots of variety. I listened to it twice. Well done!

Wegen ihnen hing mein Hosenbund damals in der Kniekehle und unbedingt musste eine Nachtwächter/Janitor Jacke mit name patch her. Ladidadi, mittlerweile weiß ich, wer John Gotti ist und auch sonst ist das alles nicht mehr so neu, aufregend oder ready for the mosh pit at Hurricane Festival. 1.4

Als die damals rauskam hab ich die gar nicht richtig ernst genommen. Komischer Name schon allein, und auch das Gesamtprodukt flüsterte einem ja augenzwinkernd "Achtung, Poser!" zur Begrüßung entgegen. Klares Todesurteil, normalerweise. Haben sich dann aber erstaunlicherweise recht schnell eine Begnadigung erspielt, durch eben dieses Augenzwinkern und das fast schon auf Metaebene gezogene Posing. Und so geht mir das heute noch; kann das immer noch nicht richtig ernst nehmen und denen entsprechend auch für nix böse sein. 3 Punkte für lustige 90er Referenz und Erinnerung daran, wie das damals eben auch war.

I generally enjoyed this album. I found them to have personality and a cool sound in an area of rock/hip hop mix that I don’t tend to often like.

What a fun album! Kind of borderline "Gangstagrass" on the first track. Mixing hip hop with numerous styles, this album is just silly, while also being cool.

This did not grow on me over time. The funk-inspired instrumentals were cool, though.

Starts out strong, with an instrumental that made me expect more of a country-rap crossover (in 1996!? Lil Nas X eat your heart out). But the rest is some attractive East Coast hip-hop with rather guitar-centric beats. Fun to be sure, and I imagine a show with live instruments would be great, but not exceptional.
