Irgend ein R&B Murks. Ein wenig Musik und viel Gemeckere.
not my thing
Kind of bland.
The instrumentation was a quotes one for me. On some earlier tracks, it really added to the song; on others, it sounded so lo-fi and off. Didn’t mind the rapping.
Yeah, this is difficult. Always hated the Scooby Snacks song, so wasn't looking forward to it. Suprisingly musical, but turns to shit when they open their mouths.
nicht meins
Scooby snacks!!
Pretty clear why we only remember one of their songs
They have some good grooves, but ultimately come across as a second-tier Beastie Boys knockoff. There’s hardly a reason for this to be on the list.
I feel like teenage me would have listened to this ironically, but other than that, it’s fine.
You know, I don't know, it's like beastie boys but without the fun. Also the last few songs are eh what is this sappiness?
Another album that feels thoroughly inessential. Not unpleasant to listen to, and I remember a few of these from the radio of 1996, but doesn't need to be on this list.
I wanted to like this. I appreciate that they’re trying to merge different styles of music together. There’s elements of hip hop, elements of jazz, elements of rock, elements of rap. And overall I appreciate the laidback vibe that was prevalent in the first half of the album. In theory it should be really cool but in execution it just ends up sounding like an identity crisis. What exactly are they trying to accomplish? There are some parts of the songs that are actually pretty good but then it quickly switches to something else and it’s like what the hell just happened here. I don’t think the singing/rapping works well with the music; it sounds disparate. Maybe it’s just the guy who does all the vocals that I don’t like. Either way, it’s a miss for me.
This was fun at first. A bit corny. Then it just started getting more and more, for lack of a better term, simple with each passing song. A lot of the songs got to be pretty repetitive. You would be able to point out the name of each song within 30 seconds of listening to it more than likely. It's usually the phrase they're repeating over and over again. This may lead you to believe I outright disliked this album, but I didn't. It may have been really simple, but it is what it promises to be. Fun. Goofy. It had some charm to it, but it isn't something I intend to revisit.
#774. Is this really one of the thousand best albums you could come up with? Does this really deserve to be here over the many glaring omissions that could be on the list instead? Not really. 2/5: meh
Didn't know what it wanted. Not worth the time
This feels like someone trying to be cool as hard as possible. You are forcing it hughie.
90s MTV bubble gum music
This wasn't for me.
This is a very strange album, I’m not sure what the genre is but Snooby Snacks could come right off an early Beck album. I did enjoy the down beats of Methadonia but the lyrics tended to be juvenile. I do question why the lowest rated album in their catalogue is on this list.
This is ain't it, this ain't the vibe
Not the best thing I've heard come out of the 90s
The premise of this album is so good but it let me down so hard. The first three tracks are amazing and then they devolve into some of the dumbest shit I have ever heard in my life. Scooby Snacks, Smoke Em, and King of New York are just a guy repeating the same lines over and over, over a very lame beat. None of the flare of the guitar solo from Passive/Aggressive, etc. They had a good idea but not enough to fill out an album.
There wasn’t really any cohesion that I heard. Music is good but a pedestrian album all together.
Very 90s sounding hip hop
I can get down with some 90s derivative hip-hop once in a while (Citizen King), but this is just pointless.
I didn't like this one.
DNF
Meh. Some fun, but not great.
They sound like they're somewhere between Cypress Hill, Beasties, and J5. Some of this is alright, but much was pretty forgettable. Maybe cause I was so high, or something.
It has some good songs (Passive/Agressive, The Grave and the Constant, Crime and Punishment) but overrall I didn't like this. "Bombin the L" had a lot of potential with both samples of Free Bird and Seven Nation Army but they just couldn't make it right imo. It has some good instrumentals in "Methadonia" and "We have all the Time in the World" but the vocal seems waaay off. Worst track definitely is "King of New York".
The album cover looked promising, but the music sounded like what an AI would generate if asked to sum up the nineties — a non-annoying, non-creative mush.
This made me uncomfortable
Fun top half
meh
Most people I know love fun. Do most criminals not enjoy fun? Is that why the boys needed to set themselves apart as the Criminals that actually Love Fun? I'm not sure if there is an answer to this question that could be answered by any mere mortal on this plane. The album opens up with a track that flows decently. Very mid 90s hip hop. But that sample that repeats during the verse is just annoying. It's like if they really wanted to be Digable Planets, but wanted to bring a more mid 90s tone to it. Second track. Cool chill vibe until the chorus. Is this where Limp Bizkit got their style from (just more aggressive)? From chill and flowy verse to overly aggressive and loud hook. OK I guess. 3rd track is forgettable. 4th track was forgettable and then suddenly got my attention when I heard "scooby snack". What a record we got going here. I'm sure I can now die knowing I've heard the greats.
One semi hit but otherwise not remarkable.
Juvenile lyrics and boring backing music. 1.5, I need to be pretty pissed off to give only one star. I’m trying to decide if it annoys me enough to round down.
I really enjoyed the "Dick Cheney" reference. "Crime and Punishment" impressed me. Chill album that goes hard in parts. Real drums add a lot.
бисти бойз, но только без угара
Pas fan
Interesting, I saved one song in my favorite playlist. ⭐️⭐️
Seems like it could have redeeming qualities but I found it too annoying to finish
Not good
This was certainly an 90s rap album made by a bunch of white dudes who are not named Eminem... 4/10.
This was actually quite mellow. The production was the bit that I noticed most. Decent given it was stoner rap rock(?). Listened on a plane and fell asleep.
Stupid Album. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs Smoke 'Em
This was like once listen to I don’t see myself listening to this album again
Younger me definitely loved this when it came out. Now though? Not as much. Outside of Scooby Snacks, which is still great, and an unexpectedly decent cover of We Have All the Time in the World, it's not a great record for me. Fave track on this listen: Scooby Snacks
Yuck. Nice try mixing genres, but it didn't entirely work out. It was hard to pull through listening to all the tracks on here. Favourite Track(s): King of New York Least Favourite Track(s): The Fun Lovin' Criminals, Smoke 'Em
Phil Esposito mentioned! This is easy listening rap. Jam band hip hop. Their frontman Huey Morgan is actually a longtime DJ on BBC 6Music but I don’t usually listen to his show because I have an irrational aversion to hearing an American accent when I’m listening to the BBC. Scooby Snacks reminds me of middle school days hanging out at my friend’s house playing You Don’t Know Jack.
At first this album really pissed me off, but then it sorta grew on me. I think what pissed me off was it's inclusion in this "significant" list. I would not describe this as an album you must listen to before you die. I'd just say it's a fun album. It's not gonna change your life, it doesn't feel that significant, it's just fun and it made me smile a couple times. It has this goofy slacker GenX stoner hacky sack vibe? It's very 90s. It's a rap rock record... but not in the way that nu metal was rap rock. It's more a rap classic rock or a rap folk rock. It's quite silly, the first track i just started laughing because it's so stupid. But over that 50 minutes, it sorta won me over (it's definitely too long though) and a couple tracks made me smile. I think the highlight is definitely Scooby Snacks, complete with pulp fiction soundbite and goofy story about robbing banks. It's a silly song but I liked it. It has a great chorus. It feels like a long lost 90s one hit wonder. Maybe it was a hit at the time and just no one talks about it anymore. During the first track, I was thinking this is another awful 90s rap record and i'm giving it a 1. But It was better than that. It doesn't take itself too seriously. It's got a nice vibe to it. I'm actually thinking a 2.5 but rounding down to a 2. I have been trying to think about why this album is on this list... and it must be the style of the beats. The incorporation of rock and folk in rap beats. It's something that's common place now but probably was exciting in 96? I dunno, that's all i got. Also... this album had a Sublime energy. It wouldn't surprise me if they toured together in the 90s. O and it made me think of Sugar Ray haha.
2.5 rounded down because it's not essential.
I enjoyed some of this when I was younger. Today I don’t really enjoy it that much anymore. Scooby Snacks is still cool though
This is aggressively fine. I think Andy Samberg listened to it a lot growing up (but I like The Lonely Island more).
One of the most middling inconsequential bands of the 1990s. Why is this on the list? Not an all time album that anyone needs to hear. Most probably come for "Scooby Snacks", but the faithful cover of Louis Armstrong's "We Have All the Time in the World" is probably the peak of this album. Everything else is a strong pass. The important album from 1996 that is not on this list that everyone actually needs to listen to before death is TOOL's Ænima. How did that oversight occur?
Seems like a joke-band? Or maybe this is just the 90s vibe that I have forgotten. It's mostly just quite dull. Simple music and lyrics, not really seeing it.
No.
I like the palette of sound here, but something about these guys' use of ebonics is giving me late career Steven Segal vibes. Ultimately it feels like a novelty act better left in the 90s.
Wasn’t bad but didn’t keep my interest.
Faintly juvenile and not in a particularly fun or funny way. Wouldn't go back to this and didn't enjoy the listen.
I don't know about this being in this list. I don't mind them, I saw them back in 2001 and they were a fun time. Some nice grooves, some ok relaxed rapping, nothing feels especially ground breaking. The scooby snacks track has a great chorus, but the verses just kind of exist. I dunno, I just can't get particularly excited about this. It's not something I'd expect someone to tell me I needed to listen to and I'm not sure I did.
Lots of hate in the reviews for these fellas. Me, I’ve never heard of them, so I got no history of hate. Now I’ve listened…. No hate. No love either.
Not sure I needed to be reminded this subgenre existed - these guys, Sublime, Stereo MCs, and I’m sure others I’ve happily forgotten. Instead of fusing hip hop with metal, we get stoner rock with rap - and making the two genres kiss does not improve either.
Unas mezclas realmente raras de géneros en su búsqueda - infructuosa - de algo. No creo que encuentren nada.
Scooby snacks! Forgot about that song. I always thought bloodhound gang sang it.
Scooby Snacks aside, this is an album that benefitted from Britannia Music Club and Huey Morgan being front and centre ... certainly not one of my 1001 Albums, but not horrendous
A couple of good songs, but overall, I'm once again confused as to how this is an ALBUM I need to listen to before I die
This is one of those bands that saw the rise of bands like Sublime, 311 and Incubus and thought they could be part of the glory, but fell short. It's not terrible music, but it lacks the substance and innovation that those aforementioned bands carried of this style. The lyrics are amateur and uninspiring, even cringe at times because of how cheesy it is. Happy that I lived through this era of music, but I'm also happy that it has since faded into the abyss of time.
Mediocre rap, mixed with mediocre funk, mixed with mediocre rock. Unexciting, not massively offensive but wouldn’t listen again.
okay i dont need to listen to much of this to know it's not my style. it reminds me of the kind of rock from the 90s/early 2000s i really don't love and topped with pretty dumb lyrics and some guys with no swag
Hmmm. Odd. When I saw this generated I immediately went "oh, cool, I remember this, it's a fun little album". But listening to it, I can't help but feel this is really... juvenile. Especially compared to Tito & Tarantula whom I incidentally listened to not too long ago as well, and whom I associate with the same period. So... dated in sound and lyrical content, not as much fun as I remembered, but not objectively horrible, either.
Expected to find this at least a little better.
2+
Trying to be too many genres
Fun and immature
La duda es si este o el siguiente es mejor. Aquí sacaron 4 sencillos como The Grave and the Constant , el superéxito Scooby Snacks, The Fun Lovin' Criminal y King of New York. También otras buenas como We have all the time in the world (Louis Armtrong) o Bombin' the L con samples de Lynyrd Skynyrd (Free bird) Deep Purple (Smoke on the Water nada menos). Se agradeció y mucho en plena vorágine Grunge-Brit-Gangsta una música como la suya. No son nada del otro mundo, pero se escuchan de maravilla y aguantan el paso del tiempo.
Decent almost a 3.
Some of the tracks have good backing. The rapping lets it down. Not sure why they cover Louis Armstrong 2/5
It's fun. Rocked along nicely. Scooby Snacks and King of New York are standout tracks. Glossy production.
This has aged not nearly as bad as it could have due to the chilled out funky vibes of the majority of the record. The more hyped up moments are a bit more cringe inducing for me because they are aiming to get me amped and at excited but instead make me feel like an uncool uncle at a kid’s birthday party. None of it’s particularly good, but it’s not in your face enough to offend too heavily. If you ignore the mediocre rapping there’s enough here to pass the time.
I like the chill bits, I hate the fun lovin’ criminal bits.
I'm all for more 90s hip-hop being represented on this list and have never heard of these guys, but this is pretty wack. Get the heck outta here with this
No início achei até um pouco interessante, mas não passa de hip hop zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Didn’t love this. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for it today.
Proto Linkin Park or POD with the rapping. Also has ska-like with the horns. Genre-bending, but not for me.
I got halfway through. It's honestly pretty fun, some good grooves/beats. But it's pretty cheesy and shouldn't be anywhere near this list. Seriously, these guys over Sublime?? Fuck outta here
Rap rock projects are always ambitious, simply because of how difficult of a genre fusion it is to pull off. This album does not pull it off.
The beats were actually kind of decent, but completely wasted on this group. So repetitive, uncreative, and droning.
Vähän jätti kylmäksi jotenkin 2/5
Luojan kiitos rapin ja rockin sekoittaminen jäi pääasiassa viime vuosituhannelle. 2/5
This feels like the Kidz Bop version of Limp Bizkit. At least those guys had an edge to them.
CAKE at home:
This album was a bit of a surprise to me. I mean, I didn't like it, but after listening to the first song I thought I reaaally wouldn't like it. I think I am not a fan of rock/rap?
Okay, so you mix some bargain-bin Beastie Boys energy with watered-down blues riffs and think you've found a vibe? Nah. It’s got that “cool older cousin” energy, but the kind who peaked during the Clinton administration. There’s a track or two that almost works, but then they start talking again. And that’s not a compliment. Feels like a joke nobody had the guts to end early. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - The Fun Lovin' Criminal
Never seen the appeal of FLC. Scooby snacks and opener are fun tracks - but massively overplayed which has diminished their appeal for me. The rest of the album is forgettable. Fun fact I used to see Huey walking his dog on regular occasions and have dog chat as we both had puppies at the same time.
There's that one song that samples pulp fiction and a bunch of filler, so unnecessary
Not for me.
Scooby snacks was fun in the mid 90s l, and a nice little blast of nostalgia. The rest is pretty forgettable, and I'm bemused why it's on the list.
Meh, this sucks. It is a weird juvenile hip-hop rock fusion that does no favors to either genre.
When this popped up I was a bit shocked. Stoner, frat-bro rap? WTF. Being someone who came up in the 90s, I know a lot of guys who loved this album, The Suicide Kings, Andy Gracia, and, for giggles, a little Bloodhound Gang. As for why this would be on the list, while not high art, it is a good example of 90s fusion rap. It's listenable, well made. It has flaws like being over long (I blame the CD Format) and they aren't the greatest rapists or singers. Some decisions made on this album have not aged well, but many production and writing decisions from the 90s have not aged well. The whole album screams 90s which is why it's on here, I guess? Reasonable people can disagree but I every time will take this over 'Hooray for Boobies.'
ei kummosta mutta respect albumin sointuvuudesta soi hyvin
Absolutely does not need to be on this list.
Why is this here? I don’t need it.
Som gangsterrap från Örgryte
Everything I like about this album has to do with me recognizing the original songs they sampled. Reminds me of a Tone Loc meets G. Love.
Not a fan of the rap-rock parts of this and I think it's a little incohesive for a 50 minute album
Some cool samples, but not very good. The album also jumps around genres a bunch, without excelling at any one in particular.
Hvorfor er dette på listen ?! Ikke katastrofe men definitivt ikke et album man må høre før man dør...
Samples are cool, but music is very east coast
Boring rap with real instruments. Not entirely bad.
. . .
It's not exactly bad, but it is very embarrassing. This is such a mid-90s album. Sampling from Pulp Fiction, talk rap, jokey without actual jokes. I would not ever want to have a conversation with somebody who was an unironic fan of the Fun Lovin' Criminals in April 2025.
Meh.
Try to forget the band is called Fun Lovin’ Criminals but the first song won’t let you. They’re one of those half-rap / half-sing-along live band hip-hop things mixing genres and grooves like mid-90s Beastie Boys, The Greyboy Allstars, Ozomatli, and G. Love & Special Sauce. For a hot second, I caught a Big Chief and Morphine connection. Maybe even a little Mellow Gold Beck. Maybe we walked by House of Pain for a second. You probably hear another band from the time they remind you of or maybe you think you haven’t heard them before, but you’ve just heard "around" them, this sound permeating the decade almost as much as grunge. Then Scooby Snacks kicks in and you're back at some high school or college party, or you’re nine and it’s on the radio. It’s a mood. I’m just not sure I need to go back there.
I had a moment with this album back in the 90’s. More specifically the song Scooby Snacks. Not sure Come Find Yourself by Fun Lovin’ Criminals has the same effect as it did on someone in their early twenties. Actually, I know it doesn’t. With that said, this is not a horrible album. It has a few moments. For example, the opener is fun. And there are a couple of other halfway decent songs. BUT, there is also a lot of nonsense and bad songs here. I’m actually surprised this album made the list. Basically, this has been a long winded way to say there is a reason I haven’t listened to Come Find Yourself since the late 90’s. Yeah, I found myself and it didn’t involve the Fun Lovin’ Criminals. It’s a 2 for me. 2/5
Faux gangsters having a strange fusion of hip hop and blues rock.
Wannabe cool, ends up being cring. There are a couple good songs but they're covers. 2.4
Quirky. Once you get past the first few songs, it's ok. Scooby Snacks is actually quite enjoyable. 2.5/5
A decent sound that surpassed what I expect when I hear the genre is rap-rock. Still, it’s lyrically super shallow and I got about six songs in and had to wave the white flag.
The only thing I remember from this album was that I hated Scooby Snacks. That's still holds true, that song is utterly garbage. This album doesn't really fit in anywhere for me - it seems like they wanted to be like the Beastie Boys but wanted to be taken more seriously? I don't know, the album is just boring. It's still got the hip hop vocal style which I think is one of the main things I hate about rap in general. I don't see how this album was groundbreaking in any way, it was just more of the same for the time. Great guitar solo on I Can't Get With That, an extra star just for that. 2/5
Felt like there was potential but they didn’t really connect for me. Reminded me of The Dirty Heads but worse.
Some of it was a 3 some of it was a 2 for me. 2.5
There were a couple times I liked the beats but overall did not like their songs.
i've only ever heard Scooby Snacks prior to today, so this will be a relatively new listen for me The Fun Lovin' Criminal - 1/5 (booooo corny) Passive / Aggressive - 2/5 The Grave and the Constant - 3/5 Scooby Snacks - 4/5 Smoke 'Em - 3/5 Bombin' the L - 3/5 I Can't Get with That - 3/5 King of New York - 3/5 We Have All the Time in the World - 4/5 Bear Hug - 1/5 Come Find Yourself - 3/5 Crime and Punishment - 3/5 Methadonia - 1/5 Overall rating: 2.6/5 ⭐️⭐️ upon hearing the opening track, i was ready to write this whole album off as shit and stop listening. after finishing the entirety, i think i can say this was... fine? i don't doubt this album slapped by the 90s standard, but this did NOT age well after nearly 30 years since release, particularly the bluegrass-y fusion tracks. while most of this was tolerable, it was just that. tolerable.
I liked two songs. The rest of the album is pretty chill and vibey, with a very laid-back 90s feel
I, uh... huh. Lyrics are very superficial--unless someone else can point me to something interesting they're saying. Worse than that, they're trying way too hard. Beats are boring. To the extent this is rock rather than rap, the guitar riffs display real signs of talent, but nothing really special. It wants to do funk but others have done this so much better. 1.5 rounded up--this wasn't offensive to my ears.
Beastie Boys-like rap with "rock". We Have All the Time in the World and Methadonia are good songs because they're not very rap-like, the rest is unremarkable.
As a huge fan of 90s music, this is one of the few albums during that era that truly deserves to be forgotten.
Douchebag music
Nothing says badass like writing an album about all the crimes you intend to commit
Some interesting moments & cool songs, but also a lot of forgettable tracks, most of em tbh
Generic 90s hip hop album with some nice funky moments. 2* Why is this here?
In the late 90s I may have had a soft spot in my heart for stupid, Stoner rap type stuff. While Scooby Snacks is a jam that's about it and it doesn't really hold up
I kind of dig the vibe they got. But something about just didnt click. Too laid back but too gangster at the same time. 2,5 stars
Nothing wrong with them, just made me want to listen to better rap
Grew on me a little bit after a few listens. A couple solid songs, like Smoke ‘Em and Methadonia. Also some very bad songs and rapping flow is just piss poor, I was embarrassed to listen to it. It’s basically dumb stoner rap. Would not recommend.
2.5
Some things are dumb and fun. This is just dumb.
I couldn't finish this what's it doing here?
Music was ok, lyrics were terrible and always the same rap style with no change
Not bad, some fun songs
Yuck. The late 90s gave us nu-metal and Rock Rap, my least favourite genres! Rock Rap takes the cake though. Didn't like the vocals, he just used the same pitch through out. Did I mention the rock samples? They were bad. The rapping is passable at best. At least it's better than Limp Buiscuit. A watered down, edgy teen rap album. Feels like something a frat-boy would listen to. "Scooby snack" was actually kind of groovy though which saves it from a 1 star. Weak 2.
Overly repetitive with beats and no major changes over time, felt like I was listening to the first 16 measures of house music that don't change, that combined with a poorly mixed vocals that were drowned out by said repetitive beats, I just didn't enjoy listening to this.
Didn't think it was clever or engaging.
An example of lots of 90's tropes/music trends but pretty corny and not really interesting.
Fine not particularly exciting. Sounds like music that plays during opening scene montages in a 90s ensemble crime caper movie.
This musical excercise is based on the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." Listening to the Fun Lovin' Criminals' Come Find Yourself doesn't exactly elicit the feeling of "now I can die." FLC were deciples of the mid-90s trend, led largely by the Beastie Boys and Beck, of (mostly white) artists marrying hip hop with live instrumentation. Come Find Yourself has its moments, the "hit" being "Scooby Snacks", a song so mid-90s it features audio samples from Pulp Fiction.
Before listening I expected this to be the hip hop equivalent of Smash Mouth, and I wasn't entirely wrong. I kind of wish they would have done away with the faux gangster thing entirely and just leaned in on the fun, laid-back vibes, which is where this album excels. It has its moments and is entirely harmless, but it doesn't feel very 1001-worthy at all.
some ok music, but didn't thrill me
Scooby Snacks and the title track are the best songs. The rest is very samey.
Not awful, just incredibly boring. 2.5
I dont even like the beastie boys that much... so this cant really land on my field. few to a bunch of tracks are solid and good but i dont feel the urge to necessary need to hear it again. (2.5/5.0)
Of all the great rap from the 90s, I have no idea why this is in the list. It wasn’t bad but didn’t do much for me. The highest of 2s for this average album
One memorable song
If I wanted to hear The Beastie Boys, I’d listen to The Beastie Boys.
This is the most aggressively 1996 album I've ever heard.
Fav song: Bear Hug Kinda fun album. Reminded me a lot of the soundtrack for Malcolm in The Middle haha. I prefer this kind of stuff when they sample into it more though, and this album seems to have more of a recorded and sequenced feel to it which makes it sound like it’s aged a lot worse in my opinion. Maybe a liiiiiittle bit too angsty for me too.
Meh! It's ok. A influential, important must listen, I'm not convinced.
It was okay, but very forgettable. 4/10
There isn't a whole lot goin on here but it isn't awful. It doesn't feel like any of the songs have any weight to them. More fun, less criminals. Favorites were Bombin' the L and The Grave and the Constant
It’s like the Beastie Boys if you took almost all the energy and fun away. At least Scooby Snacks is pretty good because the rest of this is boring.
This nearly made it to 3! Rap over a more rock background than the other albums proposed so far, and the James Bond cover was fun, but still not really something I’d ever feel in the mood for.
This album's inclusion is a perfect example of the overrepresentation of English tastes in this list. Despite being from NYC, Fun Lovin' Criminals never took off in the States. They were huge in England, though, so much so that the singer moved there in order to capitalize on his fame abroad. This is the first time I've listened to them and I get why they never caught on in the US. They're simply not that good. There was much better hip-hop available nationally (and locally, if you lived in a city with any sort of a rap scene, either burgeoning or established). England can have this.
There are indications that some accomplished musicians were involved in this project. All that's lacking is a writer and some vocals. Fun for them - not so much for me. I enjoyed a track and a half.
Hip-Hop, toujours pareil, bang bang dans mes oreilles
I'm just not into rap.. no matter how hard I try !
This is relatively innovative, smooth, and cleanly produced. All that said, there is something I find profoundly lame about this album that I can’t dismiss. Most of it sounds like the music that would play when the henchmen appear in a bad 90s movie. Best song: We Have All the Time in the World?
Meh.
They’re criminals! But they like to have fun! It’s gimmicky weed rap that never excels in lyricism, wit or creativity. It is sometimes fun. Sometimes, yes, criminal.
A lot of predictable, 90s stereotypes, mostly under a thin veil of chilled-back funky hip hop tracks, sometimes delving into straight up rock or funk to mix it up, but it somehow all feels very derivative of much better acts. It isn't the strongest rap rock, nor the best lyrically, and the funky, relaxed vibe is done better by hip hop and neo-psychedelia on both ends of the spectrum. However, I wouldn't say the album is bad, per se, it just feels simple, and so I fail to see why I had to listen to it. I don't even know the single that every one is calling a one hit wonder song, so even the hit couldn't bother to stick around in the popular hivemind. I like the complete change in direction for the finale, but it still feels like other acts have that scene covered.
2 or maybe 2.5 I will say that this album is not badly made and it has fun energy, but I also don't get much out of it.
Good singles, but this feels very much of its time, and the 'hoary rock riffs from Wish' get a bit wearing quite quickly. Those Tarantino samples really date this. Made me feel old, rather than young again.
There's not a lot here apart from the singles.
This is exactly what it looks like it is.
This is so repetitive and low entropy... definitely does not match my vibe.
Not bad but the deliveries and even some of the beats are just so lethargic and dead. It sounds like the opposite of what I think “fun lovin criminals” would sound like (2.5/5)
I remember the scooby snacks song from school. Still was not that good
Reeeeeeeeeally uneven. This was a group looking for an identity. I appreciate variety but not this variety.
Rap rock sounds like something I would love but this was just ok
Mediocre, at best. Scooby Snacks is tolerable, but it should be an album track on a good album (rather than the standout on this). A mix of styles that don't fit together that well, it's ultimately quite forgettable. 2/5.

STANDOUTS: Scooby Snacks Smoke Em OVERALL: 2/5
# 273 : weird album. There are some bops on here but some of it is a bit same-y. Not really sure if I like it or not. Favourite Track : Scooby Snacks
Don't think it's fun. I'm not lovin it (badabababaaa) and they don't have look like criminals either.
Was this bad? No, but was it good? No, not really.
Rap
Not something I would listen to on my own, and I doubt I'll listen to it again.
Cringe album. Two stars for humour and mild nostalgia.
I'll give 'em credit for trying something new. It's just...not good.
Hmm, I don't think I've ever listened to all of Scooby Snacks before, as I would not have been able to recall that it's a hip hop song. This album comes on the tail end hip hop's Golden Age but really doesn't capture that feeling, and is more like an attempt at rap-rock, or whatever it is that G. Love and Special Sauce do. Not for me, but I didn't hate it. 1.75/5.
I don't know. 2/5
Well, that was an album. It kind of reminds me of Fly or Die by N.E.R.D. but worse. This one didn't do it for me. I respect the genre blend, I guess. The sound is mixed. Some songs are alright, others are kinda boring. There's some weird tonal shifts in this. I'm not a fan of the vocals. The writing is okay. I was really worried that there would be constant band name drops given that they said the phrase "Fun Lovin' Criminal" in the first two songs, but those were the only times the phrase was said in the album. This thing's pretty long too. It's kind of all over the place, honestly. It's also kind of concept album? Interesting. Anyways, this one just doesn't appeal to me. High 2/5.
Well, I think the band, production, and sampling sounds great. The rest rings hollow to me; the live band of it all becomes a one-trick pony as the album moves forward. I'm not sure what I took away from this one--maybe that I wish the instrumentals had more compelling rapping. (And that the 90s were a very different time for hip hop.) The good vocal hooks they have are repeated until they become meaningless and grating. Highlights: the research adventure I took to try and figure out if this guy should be rapping about some of this subject matter or not Nadir: Bear Hug
Not garbage, an interesting idea mixing hip hop with other genres but it didnt really blow me away
Corny 90’s hip hop
Chilled and laid back indie with a fun vibe and a subtle Latin flavour. It's quite nice but not particularly engaging. My favourite FLC moment was Huey on Question Time saying Brexit was far too important a question to be put to the British general public. It went down like a lead balloon, but he's not wrong. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Scooby Snacks Date listened: 15/05/24
Criminally not fun
Not for me
Oof, pretty bad. Big Kid Rock vibes. Why would you make an album 50 minutes when half of the songs are just repeating some inane phrases over and over? Didn’t make me angry enough for a 1 but this is a lowwww 2.
Never heard of this group. Not sure what they are (or wanted to be). Not good enough to be taken seriously by rap fans or rockers. Seems like a poor attempt to be the Beastie Boys.
Music was fine. Nothing great, pleasant enough. Had some catchy beats but that's really it. Mid as can be.
'90s rap rock that faded into obscurity. I don't think anyone was really interested in remembering Fun Lovin' Criminals though, as they never quite excelled in any of the genres they were borrowing from. There was better alternative rock, better jazz rap, and better rap rock compared to anything you'd find on Come Find Yourself. I'm lead to believe they're only remembered for the single Scooby Snacks but that song is just as underwhelming as the rest of the songs on this album.
These are the types of albums that get through when you set your number too damn high. Maybe 401 albums would have been better. Seriously, mediocre bands, sub-par albums from great bands (or at least a band that has a much better album). I'd like this generator to start honing it in I'm being generous with my stars today
Kann man gut nebenbei hören. Den Sprechgsang finde ich OK. Insgesamt ist es eher langweilig.
Music is okay in places but overall just "meh" it doesn't help that this whole album makes me think of some really irritating people that I went to school with. It just has a "eww" vibe throughout.
warum......... wenigstens nimmt es sich nicht ernst so wie green day?!
Love a good "mafioso rap" album. Like the random Pulp Fiction/Reservoir Dogs sample there in Scooby Snacks. We Have All The Time In The World is a random switch up on genres there. This was ok. Feels like I was kinda into it at the beginning but it faded into the background pretty damn quick. Either a high 2 or low 3 I'm going to decide tomorrow when I can actually rate it.
Plays with a variety of genres, but somehow manages to not be particularly interesting at any of them. Fave Songs: Methadonia, We Have All the Time in the World, I Can't Get with That (Schmoove Version)
I'm not sure about elsewhere, but in my country these guys were a one hit wonder. The big song "Scooby Snacks" got a decent amount of airplay, probably because Tarantino was massive back then. I remember the title track "Fun Lovin Criminals" getting a bit of airplay, but it never really took off. This was an interesting listen, although it seems a bit try hardish tbh. Scooby Snacks still rocks though.
Un poco coñazo la verdad
I haven't listened to this since it first came out. Musically very good but the rapping can get kinda old. It's chill though.
Honestly just sounds like knock-off beastie boys. Fine, but forgettable. The soul elements come through in a more relaxed tone compared to other rap-rock bands which does help make it a bit more unique. Top tracks: The Grave and the Constant, I Can't Get With That, We Have All the Time in the World
The music is fine. I'm not the biggest fan of all the genres they mixed in, but they did it alright. Not exactly what I would like to hear right after Beastie Boys but oh well. 2.5 just to indicate I liked this better
I like the music. The guitars are awesome. I like the grooves. But nothing about this music grabs me. I've never heard such great music that falls totally flat on delivery. The lyrics don't give me any poetry. Zero. The album starts with their theme song I guess. Great. I wasn't sure if I was listening to the Fun Lovin' Criminals. Yep. It's them. What's the rest of the songs about? I dunno. I should've robbed more banks for fun I guess. Why does this song start with a Pulp Fiction sample? I don't remember this song being on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Scooby Snacks? Was Scooby Doo in Pulp Fiction? I'm so confused.
2.5
It was kind of a mix between old-school rap and punk rock? Not a fan.
90s calfornia surfin like Sublime but a little more rappy and not that interesting to listen to. Nothing there for me.
Raps were kinda meh but the beats were pretty good
Fine.
somewhere way in the back there is a drunken stupor giggling about fun loving criminals and taking notes on a criminal fucking conspiracy.
Pretty meh. Couple of good songs, only vaguely remember Scooby Snacks so didn't add much nostalgia. Plenty of better rap rock out there. Should have included Zevon in the list instead of this
Scooby snacks was fun but sound mixing wasn’t clear enough for me to really enjoy
It's just alright. Fav song methodonia
Not so bad, a bit fun, and unnecessarily long
Not bad... wasn't anything revolutionary.
Sound like off-brand Bloodhound Gang, who are themselves off-brand quality. Not sure why this is on the list. Falls off pretty hard in the second half.
I couldn’t really find any information from Wikipedia on why this was important, and it didn’t seem like the contemporary reviews were anything above average. The beats are fine, it seems indicative of a mid-90s style of rap/hip-hop with some early fusion with rock (which, let’s face it, didn’t really end well). There were some weird stylistic shifts that just didn’t gel with the rest of the record “We have all the time in the world”, its a solid and sweet track, but just really doesn’t fit with the rest of the record. Overall just kind of confused on why this was included on the list, even if I didn’t hate it. There are decent moments, but nothing exceptional.
“Kerouac is wack but I’m down with Dostoyevsky” was gonna Give this a 2 b ur that like earned a 3 lmao
- Never heard of this before - Didn't really enjoy it, not terrible though
It's like the 90s version of mumble rap
ducking Scooby snacks 2.2/5
Another album where I really don't understand why it's on the list. This reveals the British bias of the list too, since these guys are American but never really got famous except in Europe. It's not the worst thing I've listened to. The music is actually pretty good, and the Bond cover song is good. But the lyrics are pretty bad. It's like LFO trying to be the Beastie Boys. 2/10
Not a rap rock guy unless we're talking Lincoln Park. We're sampling pulp fiction tho so thats cool? Best Song: The Grave and the Constant Worst Song: King of New York
Not too offensive but mostly MOR drivel. The rapper isn't very good. They like weed. Woooo.
Sounds like a generic video game soundtrack
White boy hip hop just isn’t for me.
2/5. Nothing special to me
I've listened to the album multiple times over the last two years but I always ended up tuning it out. I listened to it again today and found it very unremarkable. Also the start of Bombin the L sounds like Smoke on the Water for a sec. High 2.
This had some fun stuff but it also had a fair amount of genuinely bad songs. Shit kinda sounds like if the red hot chili peppers had a baby with the beastie boys and that child grew up listening to Snoop Dogg. Overall this wasn't bad though; it would probably be 3 stars with no context, but I just feel like there are so many better alternative hip hop albums from the 90s through today that are both better and more influential than this. 4.5/10
The soundtrack to every stupid teen movie of the late 90s.
Fun title track, but other tracks dull and forgettable.
Kinda fun but not for me. Sort of an Everlast meets Sublime meets Cypress Hill.
I've never heard of this band or album before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Overall, I wasn't terribly impressed by this album. The music that played under the rapping was fine, but it wasn't particularly interesting. It definitely worked better on certain tracks, like the title track, and "Scooby Snacks." However, the Tarantino dialogue samples on "Scooby Snacks" was pretty jarring and felt out of place. As for the rapping, I didn't think the flow, rhymes, or lyrics were that great; things felt pretty lazy and haphazard. As far as this album's importance and significance, I don't know if it had an impact on any rap rock acts that came after it, but I'm just glad that most of the rap rock I've heard has been better than this album.
Very mid music. I like rap but this is just boring and uninspired
Not very good
I found this album to be pretty frustrating. I actually really liked a lot of the beats here. At times it's a bit rap-rock in a slightly cheesy way, but a lot of the songs have really good catchy beats. Lots of rock sounds, but it gets pretty jazzy at times too. But man, the lyrics were rough. It's not just that they're bad (they often are a little weak but not horrible), but so many of the songs have just so much repetition of short snippets of lines that it was grating to listen to. I don't think I can hear \"La-di da-di, free John Gotti, 'The King of New York'\" one more time. There's also one song in the middle of this ridiculousness (\"We Have All The Time In The World\") that's just beautiful and earnest, and of course I now learn it's a Louis Armstrong cover. It didn't quite fit, but it was still pretty nice. There were a few interesting songs on here, but overall this didn't work much for me. Favorite song: We Have All The Time In The World Other: The Fun Lovin' Criminal, Scooby Snacks 11/30/23
Naaa.. not really my thing
I didn’t love the album. Don’t have much to say on this one.
The start of this album was actually quite decent, but it really fell into a big pile of "meh" pretty quickly. Favorite track: Passive / Aggressive
Curti a Scooby Snacks, divertidinha, faz balançar a cabeça. O resto das músicas ou era muito repetitiva, ou era gostosinha de ouvir, mas nada que me chamasse atenção.
Scooby Snacks and not much else.
Talented band, and some enjoyable cheap thrills. At the time, this rap-rock hybrid by a live band probably seemed groundbreaking, but it sounds very dated today.
- chillig - erinnert sehr an Stereo MCs mit mehr Blues/Jazz Einflüssen - nicht ganz so geil wie Stero MCs - coole Backgroundmukke - 2,5/5
- not my kind of music - still there are some okay-ish to good tracks - chill blues / jazz parts - but overall a 2,5 / 5
just sounds so adolescent now. Drugs and guns are cool, guys!
I remember the songs Scooby Snacks and Fun Lovin’ Criminal from my youth. They were not my favourites back then, but they had a catchy vibe. However, listening to the whole album now, I now realise how bad it is. I have no idea how it ended up in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Rap rock is a genre that has not aged well, and this album is one of the worst examples I have listened to recently. The lyrics are cheesy, the music is bland and the vocals are annoying. The only redeeming quality is that it is not too long, so it does not torture you for too long. It barely deserves two stars out of five.
Some decent instrumentals, but I’m just never gonna be a rap/rock guy.
FAVO: The Grave and The Constant, Smoke 'em
I’ve been listening to more old school hip hop as of late but this didn’t hit the way others have.
According to the good book, this was supposed to marry Hip Hop with other styles. But really, this is just Hip Hop. 1.5/5
Rap rock is not my thing. Scooby snacks is fun.
Þetta heillar ekkert sérstaklega. Mögulega tvö lög þarna sem eru ágæt.
"Scooby Snacks" is a lot of fun, Tarantino quotes and all, but top 1001 of ALL TIME. Behave yourselves.
Meh, no me encantó, ni disgusto, lo más destacable es la mezcla de las guitarras e instrumental más rock con melodías más del rap, pero no mucho mas
Funky musicianship marred by sub-par rapper spouting the most overused rap-cliches.
this album is an album that includes every genre under the sun! hip hop was the dominating genre, but the fun lovin' criminals (what a band name) incorporated jazz, rock, rap, and some country/blues. they even covered a bond song! i didn't hate this album and its genre jumble, but i also didn't find it terribly interesting as a whole and i don't know about its inclusion on this list. the song titles were entertaining, at least.
I was rather indifferent about this album. It reminded me of a few different alt-hip hop/rock/funk and adjacent acts from around the same time...RHCP, Beastie Boys, and even Sublime at times. Mostly I would say this just had kind of a "chill" overall vibe about it, but the lack of overall variety in song pacing and tempo made it rather boring. In any case, none of this really stood out to me. Not necessarily bad, but definitely forgettable for me.
No. No. No. It's like a 90's time capsule, except one you don't want to ever open. Pulp Fiction samples! John Gotti references! Rapping over a beat about drugs and petty crimes! The musicianship is pretty good. But no. No need to revisit or remember this album.
This was all over the place, sounds more like a random playlist.
Ok - so I just gave a rounded up 4-star review to Ice T's OG: Original Gangster, and after hearing this, I wish I could go back and give that 5 stars. This reminded me that good hip-hop can't be taken for granted. This Fun Lovin' Criminals album feels like Hip Hop 101. It's repetative, it borrows more than it creates, and it is kind of lazy. Nothing really here for me. No tracks really stood out to me at all.
Twas alright. Some of the songs were funny like Scooby Snacks but others were just mid. Honestly nothing really great came from this. It progressively got worse/more boring so I’m not too positive about this.
Another one that’s just “fine”
I'm not a fan of the rap-rock approach and I would throw these guys in the same category as Beck or maybe even Stereo MCs, who at least you could dance to. The hit is definitely catchy and I kind of like "Bombin' the L" or maybe it's just Deep Purple.
This comes hot on the heels of Eminem, and although it’s much more listenable with a real band, playing real music in the background, it never quite gets over the hump for me.
Sounds a little dated and a little stale/boring at times. I did not have a bad time listening to this though. But, in my opinion, it's not comparable to the other hip hop from this time.
It's listenable, but I didn't hear anything special to warrant inclusion on this list. The single is catchy of course, but the rest of the album is very standard, even derivative.
Despite the weak lyricsm, there are some fun instrumentals, and the overall vibe is pretty chill. Think late afternoon summer BBQ music. 🍖🍖
Well intentioned, which is about the best I can say about this. The vibe is "background music you'd hear at a brunch spot on a Saturday afternoon" -- considering these guys would fill in for bands who dropped off bills when they were starting out, it makes sense.
Another rap album (sigh). Oh, but this one has harmonica. The vocals on this one seem to be pretty low effort for the most part, and there were a couple of really awful tracks ("We Have All the Time in the World" and "Methadonia." Yuck. The first song "Fun Lovin' Criminal" was OK, but the highlight of the album was the killer guitar solo on "I Can't Get With That." All in all, it wasn't terrible, but I never want to hear "La di da di, free John Gotti" ever again.
Particularly bad despite Scooby snacks
Scooby Snacks, sampling dialogue from 'Pulp Fiction' is the one recognizable song.
Nope. Just cheese
Not for me
I fucking hated that Scooby Snacks song which is the only thing I remember from this, it's probably the only I song I've ever heard by these guys. Oh now I remember the John Gotti song, I hated that too. The rest is ok I guess. I wonder what these guys were up to before the Judgement Night soundtrack came out. For a movie I bet most people don't really remember too much about, its soundtrack sure had a huge impact on 90s music.
Almost good but gets boring. I think it would have been better without the rap.
2.3 - “With underwriting support from Freeburg Mutual Bank, the Barnaby County governing board is pleased to announce that this year’s Triboro Fall Harvest Festival will be headlined by the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, a rap-rock combo known best for their chart-topping hit ‘Scooby Snacks.’ This performance, to begin promptly at 7pm at the I-C-Freez main tent, is open to all ages. The first 300 attendants will receive a complimentary festival tee-shirt.”
Rap with some grooves or rock guitar behind it. Yawn.
This is a one hit wonder band I haven't thought about since the 90's. The one hit still holds up as a novelty. The rest of the album is a weird mix of rock, hip hop, and dated references.
Woeful unremarkable.
Its the most 90s record you can think of! It feels like the opening credits to 15 films from the 90s that were cool back then. But not now
Nah
J’aimais bien la groove en général, mais je n’ai pas accroché. M’a semblé un peu répétitif. Mériterait une autre écoute
A fun enough listen and very 90s with it's rap-rock sound but nothing lingers or sticks out as special
Meh, Scooby Snacks was kinda fun but that's about it.
The horns are fun.
Look, the beats aren't bad. But the rest of it is pretty weak.
I didn't love the single back in the days and didn't enjoy the rest of it anymore today. I guess I prefer my criminals to be more of the sad, depressing and full of regrettable life choices kind. Oh well!
Fun
