I knew nothing about this band. I gave up after a few tracks. Irritating music, poor singing voice and grinding music.
Pretty terrible. I don’t like whatever kind of metal or rock this is supposed to be. Their voice is just repulsive. Not finishing it

F*"'! this album. The music is overall good the great for much of the album but that damn falsetto is always lurking - you know it's coming to wreck the party. Pure cosplay. And maybe that's the point. But I can't have any fun - and the riffs galore provide ample moments of fun - but his voice just makes me so ANGRY to the point where that is the only emotion I can feel. There is a great power pop album in here but with this presentation - I can't. I just can't.
Loved this album when it first came out.... for about a week and then I hated it and every time I saw that Justin Hawkins on TV I wanted to punch him in the face. He has one of those faces I'm afraid.
When it started I thought initially that it might be a parody album. Then I did research and found out that this has actually received a fair amount of critical acclaim. To each his own.
First song was a turn-off. Second song was a turn-off. And that’s how it went. Cannot tolerate that voice.

Ugh, I’m not sure how I feel about this one. The music isn’t bad although it sounds like a 70s metal band. My biggest beef though is the vocals are way too screachy.
No matter how catchy one of these songs is, this is a joke band. The rip off Freddie Mercury vocals are horrible. A 2K band playing at being a 1970s arena band. There are plenty of good heavy ‘70s bands that aren’t mainstream and far more capable than these jokers. Don’t wast your time on this one.

1 star for me. Nothing seemed real exceptional. Didn't hate the album, it just doesn't stand out and I think life would still be complete without it .
The falsetto is fun but idk how you can hear anything but the one-hit wonder quality to this record. It’s alright like a 2 or 2.5 maybe on a good day if you’re feeling the hit, but it’s a 1 on a list like this
I did not hear any music on this album. Plenty of noise and screaming. If you like that, then a good album for you.

I don’t care for hair metal and glam rock is hit or miss for me, so a revival that draws on those isn’t doing much for me. It contains a lot of what I don’t like about rock music - over the top vocals, ridiculousness/excess, meh songs with power guitars. They’re a decent enough band - the performances are good, the guitar players likes a flashy solo, the songs are decently written (though I don’t like most of them)…it’s just not something I enjoy. But it’s probably fun for those willing to give it the time of day, but I find it mostly annoying. I Believe in a Thing Called Love was a hit and is a pretty good song, otherwise the only other memorable one for me is Givin’ Up. Happy to be done with this one.

I have never heard of "The Darkness" and their album. After I played the first few tracks, the music increasingly got on my nerves. The singer does manage to sing high falsetto notes without it becoming screeching. But I still didn't like it. 1/5

Well, that was mostly unlistenable. Spinal Tap was satire, lads.
Are we there soon? How long is this going to be? Faced with a choice to get angry over this whole thing (including cover and band name), or move to something more interesting, I went as far away as I could from this mess. My flight took me all the way to KD Lang's Hymns of the 49th Parallel. Thanks for the recommendation, friend! That was a way better use of my time. I definitely did not need to listen to the Darkness.

The band has the potential to make really good backing tracks. The singer shouldn’t open his mouth. Production is atrocious. Writing isn’t anything special. There’s nothing here to excite. Deeply disappointed and cannot find a single redeeming quality. Completely forgettable. 1/5

Glam rock or Hair band this is definitely not my jam. The vocals and the guitars gave me a headache. This is most certainly not something that I need to hear before I die.
This man's voice is fucking insufferable. The only redeeming quality here is MAYBE the instrumentals
It’s really odd to look back and remember that this was sort of critically acclaimed when it came out. I guess it’s part of a cycle, every 8 years or so some band comes out that sounds vaguely like Led Zeppelin or something and all the rock guy cranks are like “ROCK AND ROLL IS BACK BABY”. This is just a particularly funny one. Imagine The Darkness had actually kickstarted a revival or whatever this is, in 2003? Real silly.

‘Love is only a feeling’ and ‘holding my own’ are alright. Besides the guitar solo at the end, ‘givin’ up’ is laughable. Who is the target audience for ‘Friday night’? ‘Love on the rocks…’ starts off being a laughable track, but sadness kicks in at the half way point when u realise there are 3 minutes left. I don’t know what to say about ‘makin’ out’ except what a fitting closer for this album it is. The guitar solos are the highlight of the album, but the sound quality of the guitar is 140p. Overall, when the album isn’t generic, it’s obnoxious. Good for a few laughs.
Looking at the critical reception for this album on Wikipedia and I’m floored - everyone loved it. Pitchfork gave it a fucking 8.4!!! Objectively speaking, this album is dogshit. They were all tricked, somehow. It’s hard to even say this album is “catchy” because no - Queen and AC/DC are catchy. The Darkness didn’t come up with any of this. It’s the uncanny valley of dad rock. They are the Greta Van Fleet of the early 2000s and they deserve to be treated as such.
This is a real rough one. I feel like I’d actually lean towards a 3 if it weren’t for the vocals. When I got to the song Friday Night I was fucking SHOCKED that he sounded great! Like he sounds exactly like Robert Smith. Why, if you have that great voice, are you singing in that weird falsetto for so much of the record? It’s not even a GOOD falsetto, there’s parts where it sounds breathy and he constantly just sings entire tracks in it and it just sounds bizarre. Not a fan, vocals (and lyrics, yeeesh) ruin what could otherwise be a pretty fun straightforward rock record.

This is an album for people's who's favorite band is Spinal Tap. I can't believe this is on the list, I always thought this was a novelty act or the glam Jackie Jormp-Jomp. The Darkness is a mash up of AC/DC and Boston with Geddy Lee on vocals regurgitating every 70s rock cliche. They're good at it (the guitar tones and harmonic leads do replicate the 70s arena rock sound perfectly) and its pretty fun but because the hooks don't have the worn-in familiarity of decades of radio super-saturation the songs don't elicit the begrudging hum-along of even dreck like "More than a Feeling." Could see this being a fun bar-band, but an all-time album? At its best you could put this on while you're painting a wall and forget is on, but when it calls attention to itself its extremely annoying. Favorites: Growing on Me, the first 20 seconds of Holding my Own
Cannot listen to this. It‘s not torture but close to not want to listen to music anymore in life.
The hair metal and cock rock they are emulating was garbage in the first place. So why would I go for a half ironic revival act nearly two decades later? Because they temper it with a bit of grunge? No, thankfully these guys were just lone oddballs, and this didn't spawn a whole second wave of this shit.
This album raised two thoughts. 1. Hair band born too late. 2. Why are you screaming at me? Overall, really disliked the album, particularly the vocals which are like a cacophony. Instrumentals are not bad-- a solid rock band backing the cat in a washing machine vibe of the singing.
