The Downward Spiral
Nine Inch NailsVery industrial. Unique sound. Lyrics are cringe AF at times.
Very industrial. Unique sound. Lyrics are cringe AF at times.
Oh my, this was dreadful. Really, really painful. It was like the worst form of elevator music imaginable.
Very noisy and thought this was heading straight to a 1 star… but it grew on me. 2 ⭐️
Very generic 70s rock. Sweet Emotion is fantastic but the final track on the album was one of the worst things my ears have ever experienced.
Great ambience! Has that song from Caveman Geico commercial
Holy funk
Anthem rock. Kinda good…
Why haven’t I listened to this before?!
Starts off super strong. Gets a little redundant/cheesy in the second half.
Really grew on me! Hong King Garden is *chefs kiss*
Sounds like a lot of good bands (Love, talking heads, Siouxsie) while also being kinda forgettable
Some pretty catchy tunes sprinkled in, but nothing that made me want to keep listening. Definitely not as good as London Calling.
Did not expect to like this so much. Very smooth. Good mix of seriousness and goofy.
Very fun!
Started to get into it in the second half! Very eclectic
Had to listen on YouTube, low quality with ads. Don’t think I would have enjoyed it anyway. Not Neil’s best.
Pretty epic and interesting lyrics but just can’t stand the vocals
Some great tunes! But also a few duds. Frank ocean meets deangelo
Very industrial. Unique sound. Lyrics are cringe AF at times.
FALLACIES, FALLACIES, FALLACI-HES
Like a worse Neutral Milk Hotel
Extremely comforting music.
Can’t believe I never listened to this one! The guitar riffs are unreal. 4.5/5. Just a tad too long.
Not sure what they were saying but I liked it. Give me some more of that please.
Not as good as I remember, even with nostalgia glasses
Love him or hate him, you gotta admire Kanye’s chutzpah with this album. But the religious songs on the album are a bit of a schlep. 3/5 for the scmuck whose schtick has gotten old. Mazel tof
YOURE LISTENING TO THE MENS ROOM ON 99.9 KISW SEATTLE. Aside from the well-known bangers, I found the album to be pretty boring. Bangers do bang tho. 2.5/5.
This album is surf-rock on a collision course with grunge, with a smattering of shoe gaze. Love the songs that go from really quiet to REALLY LOUD. Some interesting lyrics about religion and space? Pretty complete album from beginning to end with only a few weak tracks. Can definitely see how their sound influenced the likes of Weezer, Modest Mouse and a bunch of other late 90s bands. 4/5.
First off, this album is incredibly stupid. But, it’s also ridiculously fun. Meatloaf takes you through musical journey complete with rock N roll, ballads, a backing gospel choir, and a never ceasing amount of cheese. 4/5.
I don’t think there is a bad track on this album. Love it. 4.5/5
Even if Kanye didn’t go off the deep end, this album still would have aged poorly. Generic pop sound with incredibly cringy lyrics. Somehow this album is cheesier than Meatloaf… and I don’t think that was intentional. This is probably Kanye’s most famous album, but it lacks the wit and charm from his previous work. Blame game is good tho. 1.5/5
DISCLAIMER: I was sober while listening to the first half of this album and wasn’t getting too much out of it. But after lighting up a doobie, I was finally able to partake in that sweet Smoker’s Delight. Then the buzz wore off and I again realized that this music is kinda boring. 2.5/5
Neil pulled all his music from Spotify. Thanks a lot Joe Rogan, this is all your fault. Edit: listened to on YouTube Music. Enjoyed this one!
Not a typical Beach Boys album… and I think that’s for the worse. I miss Brian Wilson’s vocals, as whoever is singing on this album has a shaky voice. It’s kinda cool that they were addressing environmentalism in the early 70s, as that is way ahead of the times. But the song about feet was ridiculous. Is this a podiatry propaganda album?! 2/5
This style of old school hip hop is definitely not my favorite genre. But I did enjoy certain elements. 2.4/5
These are Christmas songs made by a murderer. Good family fun.
Really easy listening. I had a fairly stressful day, but this album brought me some peace. No individual songs really stood out, but the album worked for me as a whole. 3.6/5
Repetitive lyrics: ✅ Boring guitar and electric organ solos: ✅ Repetitive lyrics: ✅ 1 hour 15 min runtime: ✅ Jared’s enjoyment: ❌ Album art is pretty cool tho!
I gotta admit, I am completely trashed while listening to this one. Absolutely loved it. But I am no state to give a fair review sooooo 3/5
Very chill 90s hip hop. Like a worse tribe sound. 3/5
This album really hooked its teeth into midway through. I’ve always liked Radiohead, but somehow missed this album. 4/5
This is egregiously Bristish 90’s. Not always a bad thing!
This was pretty awesome! Lots of cool guitar and bass riffs. At certain points, however, it seemed like they completely forgot how to play their instruments and a cacophony of sounds permeated my eardrums. 3.5/5
Check it out now, the Funk’s lil brother! Check it out now, the funks soul rubber! Right about now the chunk hole snubber! High energy, move that body music. Kinda exhausting after a long day of work, but still got me schmoovin and groovin. 3.5/5
The vocals are obnoxious, the lyrics are cringey and the hits are overplayed, HOWEVER, this is a really good album. Thematically consistent, impeccably constructed and contains all the gravitas one expects from the boys down under. 5/7.
Well this was an experience. Definitely not easy listening, but does have some interesting qualities. Feels like I’m listening to a parade for some Totalatarian Regime. The Wikipedia confirmed that this is intentional, as their music is parodying that style of music. Interesting album/band but I don’t think I would listen again.
Great, catchy guitar riffs. A few fantastic songs, but way too many with Morrisey being really obnoxious. Overall, a solid album but no where near as enjoyable as their followup album “the queen is dead”. I was eating a turkey sandwich during the title track and felt really guilty.
I went into this one with low expectations. The sound is pretty dated (it even features the millennial whoop a few times!) and there is nothing unique about any of it. But it was pleasant enough on the ears and kept a chill attitude throughout. So I guess my low expectations were met, but barely.
I had never heard of this artist before, but loved it! Good variation of sounds (and languages) and I enjoyed all of it. Listened to it twice and enjoyed it just as much the second time. That’s five stars from me dawg.
This is the second REM album I have received. While containing more hits than “Murmor”, I didn’t enjoy this one as much. Still has REMs unique sound, but it’s hard to not find songs like “everybody hurts” cheesy. The brooding atmosphere comes across more authentically in some of the other tracks. Solid 3/5 for me.
This is the music that plays when you say “Siri, play classic rock”. Nothing wrong with any of this, but also didn’t bring anything to the table that I haven’t heard a million times before.
I’ve listened to this album several times since discovering it in college. Love the gothic atmosphere and Beth Gibbons eerie vocals. I’m gonna steal Bailey’s line about Radiohead… because this album is also “HaUntiNgLy BeAutIFuL”. Excited for the other 2 Portishead albums to inevitably come up in this list
Shack? More like shat. Album is as milquetoast as they come. But it was pretty easy listening and some neat arrangements on a few of the songs so I’ll give it a 2.
“I wasn’t a huge fan of the Bolognese stuff” - Bill Hader, Documentary NOW Definitely a kooky album. Exactly what I expect from Eno and Byrne. But like everything these guys put out, I ended up really enjoying most of it.
Pretty good disco album! Loved the song “thinking of you”.
I didn’t listen to this album today, but had this on CD in my car and listened to it dozens of times. Love the acoustic side of the album and 50/50 on the electric half. Sedan delivery def grew on me over the years
A little too much sitar for my taste
We went from all sitar to all piano. I enjoyed this much more. It's sort of a cosmic gumbo. It almost moves to the beat of jazz. Wikipedia says his performances are completely improvised, which is also pretty neat.
By the end of this album my hair was in a perm. That’s the power of glam rock
This has probably the greatest song every written on it. Actually, it definitely has the greatest song ever.
This is a repeat for me as I got this album before we turned this into a group thing. Album is just generic stadium rock but there was some appeal with the live rendition.
Now that’s what I call rock n roll. I got past Geddy Lees jarring vocals and Neil Pearts occasionally silly lyrics so now I just love this album. YYZedd is the highlight of the album.
I’m pretty sure this is the band Jesse Pinkman played with. Was waiting for Fallacies to come up, but it must be on a different album.
This is like that Brian Eno album but with whispery vocals. Def a little odd, but much more accessible. I liked it, but may have to give it another listen to let it sink in.
Lots of groove in this one! Vocals were kinda off pointing in some of the songs, though.
I typically love cheesy 80s music but this wasn’t doing it for me.
I kinda love this transitional era between the doo-wop/heavy harmonies and classic rock. Also had an interesting ?surf rock? song at the end. Lo-fidelity and rough around the edges, but enjoyable to me. I give it fo-fo-four stars
Don’t listen to Kelly. This music is simple, but not boring. It has a special charm and sincerity.
Chill, easy listening. Didn’t jump out as particularly interesting. Maybe I should have dropped a second tab.
Where’s the falsetto??? That major disappointment aside, this was a wild album. It has a banjo song followed by a symphony. Nuff said.
A unique experience. Some of the songs are avant garde noise, while others are catchy poppy tunes. Jennifer and Giggy Smile really stuck out to me. I love the Craut!
Queen is so flipping good. I hadn’t heard many songs on this album but I enjoyed all of them.
There are elements of interesting music here… but together it is incredibly lame for some reason. If it wasn’t for a few super catchy violin notes on Bittersweet Symphony, I don’t think there would be anything memorable on this album at all.
Spooky, circus vibes. Realizing that “classic punk” is pretty hit or miss for me, and this was a miss
Pretty chill background music. Nothing super exciting, but really enjoyable for what it is. I see why this guy is now doing music scores, as film may provide that but of intrigue that the music lacks. 3.5/5 for me.
This is a repeat album for me. Extremely cool guitar riffs, some interesting lyrics, but off-putting vocals imo.
This album is awesome. Xylophone solo, bongo solo and piano solo on the same album. Plus very emotional, sensual singing. This is the best the 80s has to offer, and I think it’s time y’all admit it
Repeat album for me. Not my favorite from Neil, but it still had some moments.
Okay, this was unintentionally hilarious. He’s just soooooo SCARY. The makeup, the spooky tunes, the Wayne’s World Cameo… everything adds up to one SCARY guy. 2/5 just because I got a good laugh. Wait, on second thought, he utilized a children’s choir so that brings it back down to 1/5.
This was fire. Jungle dance beats galore. This is absolutely oozing early 90s vibes, and I was just soakin it in. GROOVE IS IN THE HEAAAAAAAAAAARRRRT
Not gonna lie… Detroit Rock City is actually pretty great. The rest of the album… definitely not.
Lovefool is a great song. Everything else was fine
A cool bluesy, outlaw country sound with some iconic guitar riffs. Too bad the singer sounds like a drunk uncle performing karaoke at the family Christmas party. 3/5
Major tonal whiplash going from ZZ Top to George Michael. It was like going from a Wrangler’s ad to an Old Navy ad. That aside, this album was really cheesy, but I enjoyed a few of the songs. I don’t think he is better than The Beatles
Oh my, this was dreadful. Really, really painful. It was like the worst form of elevator music imaginable.
I listed to this album a bunch in college. Still really enjoy it! Mix of down-tempo Detective Barbie-esque tracks and a few absolute bangers. The songs with the female vocalist are pretty forgettable though.
This album is peak indie/alt-rock, and came out at the perfect time for my tastes. There is a distinct style but each song has a unique sound. This holds up to my ears, but the nostalgia is also super strong 💪
3rd album in a row that it’s given me that I have listened to A BUNCH. Not much to say about this one… just a fantastic album from start to finish. Don’t love YELLOW SUBMARINE, but 6 year old me sure did
“ I'm talking about bands that rock. Led Zeppelin. Don't tell me you guys never got the Led out. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant? Ring any bells?” - Jack Black as Dewey Finn pretending to be Ned Schneebly in School of Rock The first half of this album has a few absolute bangers (Immigrant Song and Since I’ve been loving you) but also a few tracks that are excessively noisy and not that interesting. The second half is much more consistent and really pleasant.
Some good songs, but a lot of forgettable tracks as well. I’m glad they leaned into the hip hop sound on the followup album.
Unexpectedly really enjoyed this album. Noisy but fun. The Strokes must have been influenced by this band. Saved a few songs for future listening m.
The second song has an INSANE instrumental breakdown. I was schmoovin on my walk through the subway station. Unfortunately the rest of the album is basically Scottish Bruce Springsteen with fiddle and a smattering of bagpipes. Gross.
Saw the movie but had never listened to the full album. Understanding the context probably elevated the album in my ears, but I really enjoyed this. Love Dre’s beats and Ice Cubes rhymes in particular.
I had heard Nick Caves name a bunch but had no idea that his music was like that. I’m kinda torn between it being good or just im14andthisisdeep. It definitely grew on me later in the album. He wrote the album after his 15 year old son died, which gives some context to the dreary sound. Idk, I may have to give this one another shot.
I feel like this is objectively boring but I really like it. But why does Hazey Jane 2 come before Hazey Jane 1? That’s my biggest qualm. 3.5/5
This is REAL ROCK N ROLL! Got a little silly at times but I was having fun with it. 3.2/5
It took me 4 separate listening sessions to get through this album. hated it from front to back
The year is 2008 and I have recently joined the Lake Steven’s Select basketball program. My private school, virgin-Christian ears had barely ever heard rap. But my new teammates blast 50 cent all the time. I was scared, horrified and a little confused. 15 years later, I return to this album. It is honestly better than I remember! It’s interesting having nostalgia for something I didn’t like at the time.
Some good tracks but far too long. Was over it by the end. Very British.
One of our Dad’s favorite albums. I really solid album with a ton of fun stories sprinkled throughout. Personally, it’s my 4th favorite Dylan album. But that’s still like a 4.2/5 for me.
Why have I never listened to Bjork before this?! Really beautiful sound. Similar to Portishead in a lot of ways. I’ll have to listen to more of her discography. 4/5
This was insufferable. They even tarnished David Bowie 😢
Urgg
I thought I hated the eagles… but I actually kinda enjoyed this. Easy listening 👂
Thought I was starting to really enjoy this towards the end but then realized the album was over and the artist had switched lol
I have no qualms with this album. Incredibly enjoyable from start to finish.
I enjoy this album from front to back. Pretty crazy that this is a debut album from a group of high school friends. Many other bands have imitated that lo-fi, droning sound but not have done it as well as the strokes do on this album.
I had tried to listen to this album a few times in the past, as I had heard rave reviews. I got nothing out of it before, but found myself finally connecting a bit with it this time time. Interesting lyrics and love the horn accompaniment on lots of the songs.
I saw Tom Petty live a decade ago and it was a lot of fun… but this album is pretty meh
New Dylan to me… really enjoyed it!
Extremely pleasant from start to finish!
3rd Stevie Wonder album for me and this was my favorite. Maybe it just took some time for him to grow on me.
Had low expectations, and didn’t expect to like this one. But it is like a grungy David Bowie album.
This was 100x better than Schools out and it’s still a 1/5
My first thought: this sounds like massive attack! And that’s because it’s one of the people from massive attack. I really enjoy trip hop, but this one is just a tier below my favorite albums of the genre.
Extremely chill
I can listen to synth pop all day
Kelly and I grabbed this album a few years ago because we liked the cover. Bubblegum pop meets surf-rock punk. Fun album.
As with the other 2 Stevie Wonder albums: the ballads are dreadful and the funky upbeat stuff is phenomenal. I will say the last track, a ballad, started to grow on me by the end. 2.5/5
So flipping cheesy. Some cool industrial sounds but overall pretty underwhelming. Sorry Prince 🤴
Unique and good! Funny that the opening track was used for The Exorcist
Terrific! Didn’t realize he wrote “fare thee well” or “everybody’s talkin”. Two songs I love from other artists. Time to watch Midnight Cowboy again
I actually kinda enjoyed this one. A lot more palatable than Black Flag from the same genre.
Well that was a brutal 1.5 hours. Sounded like the worst combination of Speingsteen and Coldplay. Absolute drivel
Absolutely fantastic. Poetry set to music. Also love the subtle backing female vocals that add a little punch to some of the lyrics.
Probably the most ridiculous vocals I’ve heard yet. EPIC was a standout song in the most ironic way possible. I’ve listened to it 3-4 times now. Send help.
Very noisy and thought this was heading straight to a 1 star… but it grew on me. 2 ⭐️
Frank Sinatra has a beautiful voice and the guitar was beautiful but the album got pretty stale and redundant. 2.5/5
No thank you
My second foray into music from Mali, after listening to a good amount in college. Really enjoyed the desert blues! Most songs sound like they should be the intro to an HBO mini-series
Lil’ bit a country to get the hoe down rocking
Love Bowie but this is not my favorite. 2.5/5
Very easy listening but nothing that truly stands out. I prefer their debut album.
Beautiful, ethereal and all-together lovely. One of my favorite dream-pop albums out there. 4.5/5
I had never heard any of these Foo Fighters songs before and never care to hear them again
I loved this album as a high schooler. I realize it’s pretty cringy and overplayed at this point, but it still gets some nostalgia points from me.
Now this was some Appalachian fun. Incredibly long but enjoyed it throughout.
This was surprisingly wholesome and uplifting. I only knew Common as the guy who wears a turtle neck and preaches about “A.I.” in those commercials before listening to this.
Keep on Chooglin’
Cute and fun! Saw the Flaming Lips live many years ago and it was a fantastic show. This album doesn’t have the same energy I remember, but it was still really pleasant
This was not great but at least it was kinda weird. 2/5
One of my favorite hip-hop albums. Smooth beats throughout. Interesting lyrics. 4.5/5
Some grown up beats. Seems pretty far ahead of it’s time considering this is from 1993.
Incredibly goofy. I love goofy music, but this was trying a little too hard times. 2.5/5
Ahhhhh woombawwh awoombawah awoombawahhh. Unique album. Short and sweet.
This album is an enigma. The 3 hit songs seem like they are written by a completely different band than the rest of the album. They are so ding-dang catchy. The rest of the album imitates the Syd Barett Pink Floyd albums: bizzare psychedelia. I really loved this album (and more so their follow up album) when I first discovered cannabis in high school, but it doesn’t seem as powerful as a jaded adult surrounded by a bunch of sweaty tourists on a crowded L train that is stuck at the same stop for 30 minutes and I just want to get home and eat pasta and play with my cat. 3.5/5
I really disliked Julian Copes solo album, but this was some decent generic 80s fun. The first half of the album had some great bass lines. The second half did fall flat so it’s a 2.5/5 for me
At first, I wasn’t sure if I could get over the insane raspiness of a 90 year old but I did. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful music, beautiful album. It was cool we got to listen to his first album and his final album that were 50 years apart
I liked this. Kinda sounds like Madvillian/MF Doom with all the samples of old timey movies.
Funky, fresh, fun. 3/5
Electric organ jamboree
Zach has good taste in music
Lots of catchy lil bits to enjoy
So relieved he found the money in the end
Too much hoot and holler
Really enjoyed this. Ethereal
This was a fantastic surprise. So dramatic and intense. Some songs are really experimental, but not jarring. I really loved it. Listened to it twice. Bonus for the puppies on the cover. 4.5/5
Hard pass
Catchy tunes, cringy lyrics
I know I’ll probably be the sole enjoyer of this album, but yeah, I enjoy this album
This grew on me. Def was vibing by the end. Very 90s.
Very fun, very groovy. 3.5/5
I’ve listened to this album more than I can count. His voice is terrible, the harmonica is grating, yet it draws me back again and again with its lyrics and authenticity.
Very generic 70s rock. Sweet Emotion is fantastic but the final track on the album was one of the worst things my ears have ever experienced.
Lots of yelling. I did like the song “Girls” so 1.5/5
Pretty pleasant. The melancholy songs were the best, but nothing in particular really stuck out
Very cool guitar and throwback sound. Listened to this album quite a bit as I had it on CD on my car. I prefer their debut album to this, but this is still like a 3.5/5 for me
One of the most enjoyable albums from start to finish. Fun and powerful
Makes me feel like I’m wandering the desert in Fallout
We have now listened to the entire Nick Drake discography with this third album. While not as powerful as “ Pink Moon”, this was still haunting and engaging. Really beautiful guitar. I had never heard of Drake until this year, but I am a big fan now. Sad he died before he ever saw success during his life.
This kinda just washed over me. No strong feelings
This was quite fun! Reading the history of the album was also interesting: this was an unfinished follow up to Pet Sounds that wasn’t released until 2004. Only Good Vibrations was released as a single. Cool production and wonderful harmonies. You can see the influence of the production on bands like Animal Collective.
All that jazz
Extremely mid indie rock
Slapping baseline followed by slapping baseline. I’m not the biggest MJ fan, but I can totally understand why this is a classic. It had me groovin
So many hits from this album. I always liked the Cars but didn’t realize most of their big songs came from their debut album. Classic 80s
This was very rough. I had to be trapped on a plane to be motivated enough to finish. Every song sounded like “the bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word”. It made an hour feel like a day
All that African Jazz
2 of my favorite songs are on this album but the rest of the bunch didn’t do much for me.
Guitar and singing with some drums and bass
Very cool, very jazz
Now this is groovy
I just don’t like it
The first song was absolutely wild! The last song was incredibly confusing (but I liked it?). Overall solid, but not the best prog rock we have had (that belongs to Rush)
Very pleasant! Lots of Crosby this week and I’m all for it.
Some pretty epic hits on here. Prefer this one way more the Zep 3
This was pretty milquetoast classic rock. Some cool horn sections but otherwise completely fughet-able
Some pleasant songs but I just don’t like the way he sings. Like can he try to sing a little… better?
Very nostalgic album for me. Had it in my car on heavy rotation. Love the melodies. “Our House” is one of the sweetest little ditties ever. 4.3/5 but I’ll round up
There’s an entire genre of early 70s rock where it seems like the artists didn’t realize they could re-record a song if it sounded terrible. This fits squarely within that genre
This was so much more chill than I expected. Really enjoyed it and will listen again
Repeat album for me as I got this one early in my journey. Unique industrial sound with incredibly angsty (and many times cringy) lyrics. 2.5/5
