i get it
very interesting but i feel like in the wrong mood to enjoy it. and that tells me i don't like it as much as i want to. i can see why others would though
what an interesting album! my perception of the beach boys has always been summer fun and not much else, so even just from the cover I was surprised at how dark it seemed. i never knew that the beach boys had such political songs. this is a great little album, surprisingly short but very poignant. makes me sad that it's still so relevant - these songs could have been written and recorded yesterday and that would make perfect sense. maybe one day humanity will get it together but not today. Great album
Never did I think I would be debating between 3 and 4 stars for Eminem in 2025 but here we are. I've actually never seriously listened to Eminem before so outside of the couple of classic songs I know, I didn't really know what to expect. On one level, of course, it's aged very badly. There's extreme violence against women, homophobia, slurs and similar content that we would label "problematic" today. I think there were many kids in the 00s who were attracted to this because of its edginess, which today is viewed as cringe and distasteful. But on another level, I was surprised to feel that it's actually rather satirical. It doesn't feel glamorizing. The continual theme throughout is: "you don't want to end up like me, kid." Underlying the exagerrations is the very real frustration and malaise of living in poverty, stuck in the same old thing and never being able to escape it. This paired with the theatrics throughout makes me understand more how Eminem became so popular. I still wouldn't call myself a fan necessarily, but I did like it far more than I would have thought and despite some of the content.
I was wondering how many albums it would take before I got an Elvis Costello album through the generator (52, apparently). I've only ever heard the name, I've never consciously listened before so I wasn't sure what to expect. This is....fine. it's okay. There are some interesting riffs in a few of the songs. His voice is alright but does get grating over time and I can see some people really disliking it. I don't hate it but I'm not sure if I feel that the other 5 or so albums of his on the list is really warranted.
