Natty Dread by Bob Marley & The Wailers
May 29 2025

nice music to have on while driving. everyone else on the road is mad af and I'm just here vibing

Jun 12 2025

very interesting but i feel like in the wrong mood to enjoy it. and that tells me i don't like it as much as i want to. i can see why others would though

Surf's Up by The Beach Boys
Jun 13 2025

what an interesting album! my perception of the beach boys has always been summer fun and not much else, so even just from the cover I was surprised at how dark it seemed. i never knew that the beach boys had such political songs. this is a great little album, surprisingly short but very poignant. makes me sad that it's still so relevant - these songs could have been written and recorded yesterday and that would make perfect sense. maybe one day humanity will get it together but not today. Great album

The Slim Shady LP by Eminem
Aug 12 2025

Never did I think I would be debating between 3 and 4 stars for Eminem in 2025 but here we are. I've actually never seriously listened to Eminem before so outside of the couple of classic songs I know, I didn't really know what to expect. On one level, of course, it's aged very badly. There's extreme violence against women, homophobia, slurs and similar content that we would label "problematic" today. I think there were many kids in the 00s who were attracted to this because of its edginess, which today is viewed as cringe and distasteful. But on another level, I was surprised to feel that it's actually rather satirical. It doesn't feel glamorizing. The continual theme throughout is: "you don't want to end up like me, kid." Underlying the exagerrations is the very real frustration and malaise of living in poverty, stuck in the same old thing and never being able to escape it. This paired with the theatrics throughout makes me understand more how Eminem became so popular. I still wouldn't call myself a fan necessarily, but I did like it far more than I would have thought and despite some of the content.

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Aug 14 2025

I was wondering how many albums it would take before I got an Elvis Costello album through the generator (52, apparently). I've only ever heard the name, I've never consciously listened before so I wasn't sure what to expect. This is....fine. it's okay. There are some interesting riffs in a few of the songs. His voice is alright but does get grating over time and I can see some people really disliking it. I don't hate it but I'm not sure if I feel that the other 5 or so albums of his on the list is really warranted.

Heroes by David Bowie
Aug 18 2025

Quite good - I feel like smarter people than me have probably written loads on Bowie's orientalism and while I have some thoughts and feelings I'll let it slide given the time frame and the technical skill in his music.

Antichrist Superstar by Marilyn Manson
Sep 24 2025

hearing the first track and realizing that he was saying the n-word was wild work lmao. in all honesty I hate that I do like the general sound of it but I feel like that is more due to Reznor than anything else. Much like Eminem, Manson relies so heavily on being edgy for attention because there's not much else to him.

i like the concept but not the execution. i'm not a fan of the rap style or actual content. but i think this shows that horror rap needs to be way more of a genre than it is because i need this but good lmfao

i'm steadily learning that i am not a huge fan of shoegaze, but sometimes it is imbued with just enough punk, emo, hard rock etc elements that i can at least have an enjoyable listen.

surprising how modern this still sounds for a 22 year old album. good stuff

Fisherman's Blues by The Waterboys

i listened to the original 13 tracks, not the full expanded version. while i quite liked the first half, it still felt overly long and meandering. i feel like the songs didn't mesh well to feel like a cohesive album, but more like a greatest hits compilation or similar

Dire Straits by Dire Straits

Justified by Justin Timberlake
Jan 15 2026

definitely a nostalgic album. the singles go hard but it really does feel overly long. i feel like a few of these songs should have been shelved for a future b-sides album.

I'm not the biggest fan of loooong tracks. musically it's fine but i do wish it had been broken up into some shorter songs. the organ music bit goes pretty hard though.

i hate that there are remnants in here that make me go "i get it". i get why people liked it and felt seen by it, especially in 2000. there are parts of it, like the discussion of fan culture and the media reaction to him, that are interesting. not to mention the production and music quality have gone up significantly compared to the debut. but those are not really enough to make this listenable as an album in 2026.
