Willie does easy listening cover songs
Feels like being trapped in a Mall for Seniors
Unchained Melody should have been so much better
Sadly reveals what a limited vocal range he has
In fact largely spoken rather than singing
Nothing for me here
I have been hearing SY songs since the beginning, but never really warmed to this album
I did enjoy many moments - suprising sounds, phrases and arrangements, but no one entire song here really hit an emotional chord with me
Teen Age Riot came the closest, but still not a tune that I'm going to want to seek out for another listen any time soon
Songs from other albums have made it into my collection over the years, but this one is a swing and a miss for me - I vote for EVOL, Goo or Washing Machine over Daydream Nation every time
I remember this being one of the major musical events of the late 70's, when this stadium rock opera was going head to head with disco, punk and new wave
Hearing this again now, its amazing to hear the "samples", classic lines (And the worms ate into his brain / When I'm a good dog they sometimes throw me the bone in / Wanna take a bath? / Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn? / Time to go!) and influences that came from this album and to remember what craftsmen these musicians were
Listening in 2025 with good headphones and a quality feed, I am picking up much more of the rhythm section than the days when I played the cassette on my boombox, and also really enjoying the wonderful drum work that is so often just programmed in music today
Most albums have tracks that skipped through, and in my mind nearly half of The Wall's 26 tracks fall into that category which is fine as I'm more interested with individual songs rather than the overall story, so stopping after Comfortably Numb works just fine
Yup - awesome!
Some fantastic beats and great trumpets are featured in this album to create some really catchy tunes, showing the quality CH can achieve
But the lyrical focus on gun violence (Kill a Man / Hole in the Head), drug culture and disposable attitude towards women is really not my thing, then or now
Niggas smoking shooting and rolling with hoes
Yeah, yeah
Nothing new or original here, lyrically or musically
The song Hotel California is of course the stand-out track on this album, with Life in the Fast Lane a distant second, with nothing else being particularly memorable
A great representation of AOR/MOR music from the mid 70's, but for me the harmonies and guitar phrases the Eagles use on this album have not faired well when heard again almost 50 yerars later
OMG - that voice is just too much
This sounds like music to accompany water-boarding and sleep depravation interregation sessions
A hard NO!
0/5
What a great voice and selection of styles on this strong debut album that still sounds fresh 25 years later!
Always funny to hear the sound of a vinyl record crackle on a streaming track!
Hearing Novocane For the Soul again takes me right back to the mid nineties, and still has that fresh sound that has stood the test of time
I very much enjoyed hearing this whole album again, and look forward to revisting the rest of the Eels back catalogue
Its very difficult to be objective about an album that I've been singing along with for my whole life!
Favorites have changed slightly over time - right now I'm enjoying Ringo's singing on "Friends" and George's "Without You" together with strings on "Day in the Life", and every bit of Ringo working the drums
It was a suprise to see that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, which were released only three months earlier, are in fact not included in this album
I still believe that ditching "Rita" would have made this collection perfect!
A gem! - 5/5
73 minutes of rap-profanity is not something I wish to experience again
0/5
Something about the Zutons . . .
Is just annoying to me
Pass
This is odd - listening to an album that my parents danced to when they first met!
This my not preferred style of music, but a great energy and passion shines through on these tracks
In 1959 there were not many options for post-production editing, so I'm imaging this is pretty close to a live performance for Ray and the band
Music from a bygone era - it evokes images of a pianist in a corner of a high end hotel bar
I do remember when Jungle was the Big Thing, for a hot minute, with LTJ Bukem being the King of the Hill
Listening again now, I’m wondering what all the fuss was about
I was not familiar with either the artist or the album, but listening to these songs is a one-time event
Nothing for me here
Wonderful guitar work and drums on this album
While the vocals are also striking, they are sung in his local African language, which is sadly lost on me
Another quirk of the collection is there are only four songs - I was certainly hoping for a larger selection to get better aquainted with the artist and the Mbalax style of music
One hell of a voice!
Big band music from 1959 is a historical curiosity at this point, and while Ella is a gem in the 1001 album challange, but is not going to find a place in my collection
Oh Wow - its been more than 30 years since I listened to this album the whole way through
I now I remember why - half the songs develop like a fine wine over time and have a special place in my collection, whereas the other half dont quite hit the same way, which to be honest is still a pretty good run rate for any album!
For me, this was a solid end to a great 10-year run of Cure LP's - after this point they no longer suprised me
One of those albums that both draws upon influences from the early 70's while also providing a roadmap for many bands in the years to come
Personality Crisis & Jet Boy are the tracks I enjoyed most, but their particular shouting/singing style has always prevented me from liking them more
As I occasionally give the Greatest Hits album a play, so thought I had an idea of what to expect here
I was quite wrong, and not in a good way
Voices of Old People- seriously? Who would ever want to listen to that over and over again?
Mrs Robinson is not a favorite of mine, so basically nothing of interest here
Most of the album just made me feel sleepy, so maybe there is an alternative use for the collection
1/5
I usually prefer the sound quality of studio albums over live ones, but this does highlight that 1970's Who must have been quite awesome to see!
I've never been a Who fan, and unfortunately nothing here won me over
2/5
Soul/Funk is just not my thing . . .
Afro-Cuban jazz from the 50's! Cool to hear it one-time, but it didnt hook me enough to play it again
Wow - more than 42M people listen to Coldplay on Spotify each month!
Aside from today, I'm not one of them, and based on hearing this album, never will be
This the the album with Supernaut! A few great tunes on here, keeping Black Sabbath on the path of pioneers of metal
A surprise (to me) band in the 1001 album challenge
Nice to hear trumpets in the mix from time to time
I do prefer the songs with lyrics to the instrumentals, and I can see a few of these making it into my collection
Early 60's Jazz keyboards - another treat from the 1001 album challenge!
Not my bag at all, but glad to have the opportunity to hear it
First time hearing this artist was an unexpected mix scf-fi samples and background music to blend with rapping
Interesting, but not really for me
Another band that is both new to me and slightly misses the target for my musical tastes
Glad to have heard it, but wont be adding to my collection
"You only call me when you're feeling depressed" - yup, exactly what I expected from 90's era Mozza!
Of course I am trying to make the mental shift from the Smiths, but compared to say Headmaster Ritual or There Is a Light, I'm finding the music a little too muted and the singing less adventurous
Billy Bud was the surprise stand-out track for me, but overall it feels there is less emotional comittment in this collection
I live my life in a way that avoids exactly this type of countrified 60's R&B
The least interesting entry in the 1001 Album challenge so far
Nope - 0/5
Most of the album is in French or Spanish, which just leaves me cold because of the lanuage barrier
The song King of Bongo Bong is a funny little earworm, but not enough to win me over to this artist
A big orchestral sound from the late 60's which is fun to hear, but I can t get onboard with Scott's singing voice or choice of lyrics
I can imagine this playing at a senior retirement home, so he's probably going for an older demographic than me
This was the album that made me realize Coldplay is really not my thing
The voice and the over-produced sound grate on me more and more each time I hear it
I really dont get how they are so popular . . .
Oh, its Jazz
:-(
Thanks . . . but NO
Glad to see Hole on this list, but I would certainly have put Live Through This ahead of Celebrity Skin
Over the course of three albums Hole have gone from Teenange Whore to Malibu, and while things have become a little easier on the ear during that journey, it feels like maybe a few too many rough spots have been ground down to make this more of a mass-market product for teenage girls who like to dabble with a rebellious look at the weekend
The voice just doesn't work for me
PASS
Some high quality guitar work in evidence here, with Black Magic Woman being the only song I was familiar with
An interesting snapshot of 1970's guitar sounds
Not my bag at all, but great for a one-time listen
This artist and album are a real suprise - not at all what I was expecting
Played it a few times already, and it seems to be growing on me more each time
Interesting . . .
Spotify is describing this band as Jazz-Inflected Prog-Rock
That makes it a hard NO for me
I knew the late 60's were a strange time, but the 1001 album challenge is really throwing up some artists who's music has not aged well over the last 50 years!
Dreary
adjective
dull, bleak, and lifeless; depressing.
Whenever a Niel Young album is put on, the question at the back of my mind is which Niel Young is going to show up this time?
Ragged Glory get the Crazy Horse guys to plug in and wallow in the electric guitars, feedback and all
F*!#in Up is the stand out track from a collection that is not among the albums I reach for when I want to get my Niel on
It's ok, but I prefer Niel's acoustic stuff
Easy listening foreign-language music
Not my thing at all
Yes, okay, Weather With You is an absolute classic
But I'm not hearing anything else on this collection that comes close, except maybe the Beatles-style Four Seasons song, making it a bit of a forgetable album
A polished offerring, a dozen years into REM's career
While I like REM, and this collection certainly ticks all the expected boxes, it is generally the earlier albums that I reach for these days
That said, Everybody Hurts is a real gem and shows that REM was not just churning out radio-friendly tunes for the cash and chart fame
Drive, Sidewinder, Nightswimming & Man on the Moon round out this album
Not my thing, but pretty cool
This is the album featuring the classic "Take Five" song, with some nice vibes filling out the rest of the collection
Its easy piano-based jazz from the 50's
This album . . .
30,000,000 units sold, almost seven years in the UK album chart
That MTV song, with Sting on guest vocals
And the things that gets me most of all - it still sounds good today!
While I still prefer the first three albums, this collection is a phenomena
Beefheart on the 1001 Album challenge!
I was reading a blog post the other day saying that only after the passage of 40 years had the listener been able to finally appreciate Captain Beefheart
I'm not quite there yet, but these days i'm actually enjoying Sure 'Nuff, Zig Zag, Plastic Factory, Call On Me and I'm Glad
But the whole album - thats still a step too far!
I'm not really sure why, but this one is not working for me
Metallica was never my particular flavor of metal
I'm gonna stick with Twisted Sister, AC/DC, Van Halen, Motorhead
Nine Inch Nails have been creating their particular brand of music for over 35 years
But I have always preferred listening to individual tracks rather than a whole album at one time
Same with this collection
Tasty, but best in small bites!
A big beautiful noise from the early 90's!
The album with Silver, Killing Moon and Seven Seas - songs which have stood the test of time
Recording in Paris with a 35-piece orchestra takes them far away from their Liverpudlian roots, but also propelled them into a unique place in the early 80's music scene
Somebody To Love and White Rabbit are the stand-out songs from this collection, showcasing what an important contribution is made by Grace Slick
That album cover though . . .
So this is where the legend began
Not my favorite album, but you can hear all the key elements that would morph into the definitive Sabbath sound
Late 60's acid casualty
Nah
. . . just not feeling it . . .
One of the lowest-selling items in the Columbia catalogue
I agree!
Interesting sounds!
I'm treating this as pretty much an instrumental album, as there are no vocals in english
Which is a shame, as it feels this album could have been absolutely huge if Ry Cooder had shared some of the vocal work
For me, this album contains interesting material that needed a lot more work to be ready for release
These sound like demo sessions where ideas are simply being thrown out for consideration, rather than for our listening pleasure
Jello Biafra's vocal style has always got in the way of me being able to enjoy DK songs
Rebel Without a Pause, Bring the Noise and Dont Believe the Hype are the stand-out tracks that still hit hard 35 years later
Growing up hearing the chart singles, its a surprise to dig into this album and hear the blues roots the Stones were built upon, such as Prodigal Son
No Expectations is a gem, and together with the classic Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man, they stand above the remaining seven tracks on this collection
Not my preferred flavor of music, but some great lyrical work here
Its a nice-enough sound, but one of the best albums ever? - I dont see it
Nice production and a great voice, but the songs dont really grab me in the way I expected from /Beyonce
Dont think I ever heard this album the whole way through before
The Pixies sound never really became a fixture in my collection
Pleased to hear again Where Is My Mind and Gigantic, but I'm starting to think the Death To The Pixies is all I need ffom this band
There was a period in the eighties when having a violin section in a song was considered a necessary element
Time has not been kind to fiddle players, and hearing this album again makes me a little nostalgic for those times
When is comes to Dexy's, I'm really just interested in the Greatest Hits, and didnt find any surprises buried in this collection
Spotify mentions this Brazillian composer as "infusing samba with soul music"
Thanks. No. Bye.
Not really feeling the Prog-Rock vibe
Yup, this album was exactly what I expected!
But it is odd listening to the Pogues alone, in the morning over a coffee, rather than in a crowded bar towards the end of the evening
RIP Shane
Great to hear this album again
Home to three of their classic tunes - Californication, Scar Tissue and Otherside
A little too mellow for my tastes
Except for the guitar work on Summer Breeze, which is fabulous!
Awesome stuff
Just me for me!
Relax, Two Tribes, Power of Love and even Born to Run
The 1984 memories are flooding back
Nice to hear again, but I dont live here anymore . . .
I dont really like Robert Wyatt's voice . . .
No my fave Bowie album - too much sax, not enough guitar
But it still gave the world Young Americans, Fame & Across the Universe
Sure there is talent here, but I can only take so much of the shouting vocals in my headphones
My musical education began with punk and new wave - the antidote to this kind of 60's/70's MOR rock
So it was never going to work for me
Not quite what I had expected
Not hearing anything that I want to play again
Run to the Hills has been a fav since '82
Good to hear the whole album again
Creedence time - bring on the Bad Moon Rising!
I'm surprised to see how many songs come in under the 3 minute mark
Nice to hear the album all the way through, but a greatest hits collection is really all I need, and the other album tracks are just not my bag
Latin, Salsa & Trombone
No Thank You
The Single Paper Planes is the standout track of this album
The rest is cool, but no more ear-worms in this collection
Falls a little short compared to their first album, and hard to agree with the decision to leave off How Soon Is Now on the UK and remastered editions
Glad to see the Black Keys featured in this list
Good to hear them again
Maybe three standout tracks in this collection - but not quite enough to carry a whole album
I cant listen to Kraftwerk anymore with thinking of the syntheziser scene with Ross performing his sound "poems" on Friends
Groundbreaking at the time for sure, but in 2025, it just doesn't hit the same
Sadly, its always been the case that the sounds that come out of Bjork's mouth are not the ones that me ears want to hear
With Spotify, I also got to read some of the lyrics for the first time - that did not make her appreciate Bjork's songs any more
Me and Bjork broke up a long time ago, with no real hope of a reconciliation
