The ultimate blend of Goth rock and jangle pop. "I Wanna Be Adored" is one of the most beautiful, longing, dulcet songs I've ever heard. Classic!

Byrds style jangly guitars, infectious melodies and grooves, mumbled mysterious lyrics. It worked in 89 and still sounds great now. One of The great British albums.
Best debut album ever
Quite a lot better than I expected. Definitely enjoyed it. The last track surprised me quite a bit too, but it was a good finish to a good album. No real standout songs for me though and therefore not a 5.

my experience with SR was mostly in the context of britpop. i don't recall ever listening to a song let alone an album, but i genuinely enjoyed this. feels like a mashup of oasis and my bloody valentine. loved the dreamy vocals and instrumentation. the first half felt stronger than the back half until i got to the last 2 tracks. brilliant way to end an otherwise poppy affair. this may very well end up a 5 but i would need to sit with it for awhile longer

Kindof a bipolar album. 50% is pretty standard issue 80s Brit rock close to the Cure or the theme song to Pete & Pete. 50% is jangle with a dance beat, and its rad. I'd like 100% jangle dance. A whole album of it with seamless transitions between tracks. Just let it play and a whole hour breezes buy, feeling good, getting shit DONE at work, and GROOVIN. I most appreciate the last two songs for not being afraid to jam in circles for 9 minutes each. B
I appreciated the variety on this album. It seemed like it was the bridge between New Wave and Brit Pop. Loved some of the more moody songs with sonic distortion and show gazey breakdowns. I feel like this spawned bands like Spiritualized, Oasis, etc. my only complaint is the last song, “fools gold” feels dated, but is the only one that feels that way.
Had literally never heard of this band before, and the Wikipedia article says it's considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Catching some hints of Smashing Pumpkins, Cranberries, Garbage, Cardigans, New Radicals. There's something precious about those airy, delicate vocals. Feels like a vibey 90s take on hippie music, wondering if the Stone Roses really set the stage for much of that 90s poppy rocky ravey scene. Just got to track 4, that took a huge psychedelic turn. Some Jimi, some Beatles. The happy little guitar solo at 2:50 in "Made of Stone" sounds like something I'd play while standing on my tippy toes and fucking around with my phaser. I enjoyed this one, will see how that translates into my arbitrary awarding of stars tomorrow morning.

Reasonable record that is not as good as the hype would suggest it would be. If I want to hear what this is hyped to be, I will listen to the Smiths.

The Beatles, by My Bloody Valentine for most of the album. Cherry picked, some songs are fun, but overall it still feels a little too long with rare alternatives to the shoegazy, distant rock sound. Good guitarship comes to save your ears from sleepiness on most tracks tho and that's a good thing.
Ridiculous debut from the godfathers of indie
I was never a Stone Roses fan and I’ve never listened to this album in full, although I know all the “big” tunes off of it. Difficult to rate this one because all the hits probably make it a 5 star album, but I rarely think about the Stone Roses or choose to listen to them. But their influence on other bands I rate is huge and the hits on this album are brilliant. Toss up between a 4 and a 5 for me. I’m feeling generous this morning after a West Ham win last night, so fuck it.

Never been a huge fan of Stone Roses but this is a cool album with some classic tunes. 8/10
Feel like I've been giving out a lot of 5s recently, but this is a great album that influenced so many of the bands I used to love, and some j still do.

Really like this album, especially “I wanna be Adored” and “I am the resurrection” and the rest of the album is good too - it has a cool, melancholy vibe. Good harmonies, and it even rocks out occasionally. Easy 4

02/09 - Today I worked on setting up details for the trims around the fume hoods, helping Vidula with miscellaneous tasks in the model, and coordination at the Drum Storage building (conversations during the break out meeting). The Stone Roses were a band I had not heard of before I received this album. I thought they had some great songs, my favorite being Made of Stone. The only issue I had with this band was the stage presence. The lead single seemed extremely boring and the songs are so slow I image a concert would be quite boring.
Not many debut albums have the consistency Ian Brown et al achieved with this. There are 8 absolute classic songs on here. But I've never thought the run of Don't Stop and Elizabeth my dear are good enough and most people just skip past them to the majestic sugar spun sister. This is a shame considering they left Love Spreads and Sally Cinnamon off this. The version I have been given by apple music has Love spreads on which I don't recall being on this. Further checks to the back of my original album version confirm this. All things considered though a classic album if not a perfect one. P.S- Ian Brown can't perform live and is an anti vax nob. 4/5

Melodic midtempo British/Manchester rock with notable balance of experimental and straightforward. A testament to tight songcraft done by what feels like a fairly standard four- or five-piece rock outfit. Many of the Stone Roses biggest hits are here - "I Wanna Be Adored", "Waterfall", "Bye Bye Badman."

ich bin irre gefläsht - damals postadoleszent natürlich mitlaufen lassen im Post-90er Britpopper Feeling, aber nie wirklich begriffen, was die Einzigartigkeit der Band ausgemacht hat, statt dessen eine Best of... als ausreichend betrachtet & Ian Browns Solo Karriere mehr Beachtung geschenkt. Nun dieses erste Album nach so langer Zeit zu hören, beschert grad mir ein persönliches "2nd Coming" und zeigt mir wo das Tamburin scheppert.
Beim Debutalbum der Stone Roses könnte ich zu fast jedem Song eine eigene Geschichte schreiben, wann und wo er in meinem Leben eine Rolle gespielt hat. Bin zwar zu jung, um sie zu Release-Zeit als das Phänomen wahrgenommen zu haben, dass die Stone Roses bis heute sind, aber 4 Abende nacheinander das Etihad Stadion in Manchester auszuverkaufen ist auch knapp 30 Jahre später mühelos möglich und fühlte sich wahnsinnig junggeblieben an. Für alle! Allein „Fools Gold“, dieser Song ohne Strophe aber mit einer Zeitlosigkeit behaftet, dass er auch noch frisch und verheißungsvoll klingt. Und niemals, niemals altert. Mann, was für ein Album. Und das an deinem Geburtstag, Guido! This is the one!
All-Time-Lieblingsplatte. Zwischen "I wanna be adored" und "I am the Resurrection" ("Fool's Gold" war auf dem Originalrelease nicht drauf) nichts als Größenwahn und Zärtlichkeit, Working Class und Klassenkampf, Melodien für Jahrhunderte und frei flottierende Rhytmik. Und zwar galore und in jedem einzelnen Song ("Don't Stop" ist ja kein Song). Dazu die Looks, die Attitude und die Gang-Mentalität, mit denen sie selbst im Manchester ihrer Zeit (und es war ja IHRE Zeit) klare Außenseiter waren - und damit natürlich auch immer unerreichbar. Was sie dann aus all dem gemacht haben (Scheitern vor allem, vor dem ihnen sofort errichteten Denkmal) steht auf einem anderen Blatt. Fragt mich gern, dann erzählt Opa mal so richtig von früher und wie das damals war und heute ist in Manchester! Hierfür: klare 6 Sterne.
“The Stone Roses” by The Stone Roses (1989) Toying with horror yet failing to rise to the level of meaningfulness, this album is a work of art without coherence, much like the Jackson Pollock-inspired cover. This sound is interesting enough, given the limited talents of the band members. The drums stand out, however, avoiding standard rhythms mostly by subtraction. Interesting. We hear a sometimes-innovative arrangement of backing vocals, but nothing unexpected in the melodies or chord structures. The performance is generally tight. The group seems to exert a great deal of creative energy in trying to avoid typical pop sounds, without completely offending your average pop audience. (Cha-ching?) “Elizabeth My Dear” (“Greensleeves”) clearly reveals the serious limitations in the lead singer’s vocal abilities. The solo at 2:37 on “Made of Stone” clearly reveals the serious limitations of the guitar player. He was saved by the phase shifter. “Don’t Stop” is a silly backmasking gimmick. I had to stop. Nice rhythm section on “Shoot You Down”—it started off well enough, then the vocal and guitar proceeded to screw it up. This album would appeal to someone in the late 1980s who longed for an updating of the pop music of the mid-1960s. But not me. 2/5
Quand j’ai entendu les premières notes de bass et de guitare ça la tout de suite catcher mon oreille et j’ai salivé je pensais de trouvait un bon groupe progressif à écouter !!!j’ai débandé vite,ça tombe flat et répétitif on aurait dit du Duran duran pop. Mais dans l’ensemble ça s’écoutait

honestly better than I expected. Softy sadboi rock, but done well! I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the album, and everything after was a slow decline, but never felt awful. Probably won't throw it into a rotation but will have more appreciation if it comes up on it's own. Really hard to pick between 3 and 4 for this one. I'll round up for the hell of it.
One of those classic albums that I had never really sat down around to listen. It's really good! Love how pre-90s it sounds.
Appreciate this album more and more as I continue to listen to it. Lyrics more intelligible now, very eclectic album.
2.5 | Dirían en inglés es un disco muy bien "book-ended" muy buenas la primera y última canciones, pero nada más. No es un mal disco, pero se me hizo solo un disco "bien" a secas. Es primera vez que lo escucho, aunque sí lo había visto mencionado antes como una maravilla, entre los mejores discos (o el mejor en algunas listas) de toda la historia del Reino Unido... Perdón pero eso es una estupidez, las cosas que hace bien el disco no son tan brillantes, e incluso esas cosas buenas no son tan originales (para lo "revolucionarios" que les llaman suenan demasiado a copias de lo que hacían The Byrds 15 años antes). Las letras absolutamente sin sentido, sin deseos de decir nada más allá de una tonada mensa pegajosa. Se nota que son el inicio del Britpop, se nota que son cosa fuerte para que existiera el sonido de Oasis (lo cual no es cumplido, mas bien vergüenza le debiera de dar a quien fuera culpable de eso) y el disco no es una aberración, pero llamarles revolucionarios, genios o "el mejor disco de Reino Unido"? No... ni cerca.

Great album, the last song is shit though. [Song For My] Sugar Spun Sister and I Wanna Be Adored were the best. Don't Stop has a very KKB vibe.

Siento que el disco tiene los elementos para gustarme como pocos. También me deja un sabor insípido, salvo un par de canciones y ciertos momentos que claramente rescata el britpop. Leí que las letras están inspiradas por los disturbios estudiantiles de Francia y supongo que por eso no hubo atracción por la lírica en general. Es agradable para oírlo sin mucha atención, aunque creo que comienza demasiado lento y meloso, aumentando el beat y los guitarrazos hacia el final. Songs: Made of Stone, I Am the Resurrection.
This is so much better after the previous two albums. Honestly, it could be something I wouldn’t like much on its own, but hearing it after two albums I really didn’t like gives it a boost. So yeah, I do like this one. It’s definitely heading toward that alt-rock vibe that I prefer, and it’s good background listening music. I might actually consider looking up more of them for further listening.

Twas alright. I enjoyed it for what it is, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to listen to it.
Starts off ok (with " I want to be adored") but then gets a bit bland for me. The singing gets real soft and seems to be overtaken by the instrumentals. Then the songs tend not to distinguish themselves from each other, until "made of stone"(one of the final tracks on the album, which I enjoyed the most) and "this is the one" and " I am the resurrection ". The last 4 songs of the album really shine.

I will gladly listen to this album again today. I've lived and breathed this music for a long time. It makes me happy to think about. The definition of a classic is a piece of art that amazes you yesterday. If you looked or listened to the art today - it's wondrous. If you find it years from now, on a random day because of a web site - it will be fucking evergreen. A must listen for British rock/pop.
I guess I have to be chalked up among those who find the extreme hype around this album baffling. I thought it was fine, I enjoyed listening to it well enough and didn't dislike any of it, but I also wasn't over the moon about any of it. A little soft and slack throughout. Certainly there is Madchester scene music I like better.

¿Por qué no escuchamos más a esta banda y menos a otras de la época? Tiene el sonido de The Smiths sin todos los dramas de Morrissey. Me gustaron creo que todas pero las que más fueron 'I am the resurrection' y 'Shoot you down'.
Like the vibe. You can tell it’s right at the turn of the 80s sound becoming what become grunge in the 90s.
Have loved this album for a fair while, highly recommend watching their Documentary. Would love to have experienced that Manchester scene

Feels like a fully formed album and band, especially for their first album. Can hear similar tones to Pixies and Smiths. High energy drums and guitar mixed with spacey atmospheric singing and driving bass.

Yeah really bang average
That was quite a pleasant surprise. I was dreading listening to this, I have never been a fan and always wondered why so many seem to think The Stone Roses are amazing. I've had people try to convert me in the past, to no avail. This time round I rather enjoyed the listen. I probably wouldn't choose to put it on, but I am no longer cringing at the mere mention of the band. It was quite enjoyable.
Chill alternative rock, a little bit peculiar, but generally a pleasant listen.
There's a wistful sound here that is enjoyable but I don't think I would seek it out. Though I see wouldn't change the radio if any of these songs where on.

I seem to remember the first half of this album more than the last, until Fool's Gold arrives. Great listening to this again. 4/5.

Really cool guitars. Almost shoegazey at times. The voals plus a couple psychadelic effects like phasers and backwards guitar give it a retro 60s feel. I like it a lot. You can hear how Oasis would be influenced by them

I don't understand the AllMusic review calling this a "dance" album. It just kind of sounds like another britpop record to me.
