Ok but not that interesting
3/5. I head this album many times, and the songs just aren't standing out or sticking with me. I want to love it. It's just good.
This album is a mixture of very blah mushy boring guitar music, the guitar solos really irritate me, not good enough or exciting enough to be so self indulgent. Thennn I really like the song Waterfall and there were a few other decent moments... I do like the overall sound, it's both nostalgic and also cheery/relaxing. A nice 3.
Some great moments here but it doesn't blow my mind the I wish it did. It probably has many ingredients that I enjoy in an album: electric guitars used in a non conventional way, electronic sounds, some psychedelia, some 60s jingle jangle, and so on. I probably should stick with it for some time. Also, as many albums from the CD era, bizarrely the Brit pop ones mainly, it sounds tinny at times, which really bothers my ears.
This is an album that I constantly hear I'm "supposed" to like. Given it a try many times and although it's good it's not as special as they make out. Perhaps I was a little too young at the time, coming into my own as Oasis who were massively influenced by this came through, but find them just listenable like morning tv background music.
I love the guitar work here but more mid than I remembered
Disco popero suave bastante repetitivo.
An ok alt-rock album that has paved the way for some similar sounds we hear in today's music. Some of the songs could have had less instrumentals and be tightened up a little. Best: I Wanna Be Adored Worst: I am the Resurrection
Pretty decent British pop album. There are times when it felt like 80s music and other times when they felt like an older band as well. The music felt like standard Brit pop that has been made for a while now. Not bad just standard. 6.4/10
I could never get into them.
Didn’t really stand out. Songs were monotonous
Reminded me why The Beatles are the most influential music group in human history, 3.5/5
Kerrassaan hieno levy. Menee the Smithsin ja Oasiksen väliin mukavasti. Ripaus komiikkaakin on upotettu kaiken vaihtoehtorokkailun ja -poppailun sekaan.
Decent album, not a huge fan of the vocals.
I walked into this album believing the Stone Roses to be a very overrated band with a lot of vapid meaningless songs in their back catalogue...
It’s ok
I’ve not taken nearly enough ecstasy to make this album more than just passable.
I listened to this for the first time about four or five months ago. It's not exactly my style, and it's kind of uneven, but I respect it for being one of those albums that was clearly an important stepping stone in music's evolution.
Track 1.) Decent album opener. Nice chilled rock vibe about it, should have listened to The Stone Roses much before now Track 2.) Definitely a overhyped song. Strays away a little bit from the rest of the album but an album has good and bad songs. Track 3.) Some would say Waterfall is kinda the same feel as She Bangs the Drum but there’s something about the guitar in this song that makes me like it compared to the one before. It might be that guitar riff where it tops She Bangs the Drum Track 4.) I can gather that they’re going for the rockstar approach on this track but it just doesn’t hit the mark with me. Track 5.) Completely different song. Nice acoustic feel to it probs one of my favourites of the album. Track 6.) Even more different, 50 seconds of fingerpicking guitar and a poem of lyrics to marry the two. Track 7.) Much better song compared to the first half of the album. More of an alternative tone to it. Really like this one. Track 8.) Again more alternative tone much better than first half of album. Ian Brown just knows what to write when it comes to writing lyrics. Nice little guitar solo aswell. Much better tone. Track 9.) I feel they take a lot of inspiration from 50s and 60s bands with this song and some parts it works and other not. But again nice guitar tone. Track 10.) This is the One starts all big to guitar and bass. Big kick drum and lyrics. Then into what I think the Stone Roses should be big drums and bass with the guitar just heard but rememberable creating a more rockstar feel about the song. Track 11.) Very 60’s, but brought into the 80’s and 90’s. Some of the songs work and some don’t. The instrument at the end brings it back and changes the whole aspect of the song for the better. Track 12.) Fools Gold. Classic I can perfectly see why so many people love this album and the success it had on release with Madchester I can’t fault it. But it’s just not my thing but am not against listening to The Stone Roses again and adding them to the playlist.
Just a whole lot of nothing. It's not awful but just nothing to it.
Really enjoyed it......3/4* ?
1. Chill rock 2. Rock and slight psychedelic 3. Super husky vocals 4. Mostly rock drums and fills 5. Distortion guitar riffs
I liked the album art. I thought I would like this as background chill rock music but it didn’t move me.
3/5
The first couple of songs were pretty great but then the album took a nose dive and I had a hard time getting with it.
honestly couldn't make up my mind on this one
Good solid rock. A bit ageless - this could easily be mid 90's, or mid 00's, or more recent. Some driving baselines in a few tracks made for a repeat listen.
Fairly cool album I hadn't heard - I can definitely hear the influence they had on Belle & Sebastian who I love, especially on She Bangs The Drums which sounds a lot like an early B&S track. Fool's Gold is a tune also, I'd heard it but didn't realise it was them, v. different to the rest of the album tho. Didn't find the album mind-blowing but it's pretty pleasant and an interesting early Brit-pop entry in between The Smiths and Oasis, Blur etc. with some interesting 1950s/60s influences that made me think of bands like The Zombies and The Turtles.
This is a real "album." It sets a nice consistent mood for an hour without ever jarring you out of that mood—even with a particularly catchy tune. An hour of "like" without any moments of "love." It does take me back to late 80s moody college dorm rooms, but I can't say I knew it in particular.
I've always thought that this was an overated album and have never listened to it intently. I still don't enjoy it that much but it has grown on me a little more!
Started kind of meh but after maybe the halfway point I started really getting into it.
Pretty good, seeing the time it was released. Reminds me of Turnover and other bands of the 2010s. Not entirely my cup of tea though
Can't believe this is the first time I ever heard this. Not at all what I was expecting and not a huge fan.
Well put together and varied. Surprisingly palatable.
Not bad!
It was all right but I think a lot of it was samey and a bit like listening to them having a jam session. A couple of good tunes however
Sounds like the Beatles doing new wave jangle rock. Pretty good and something I could get into with more time dedicated to it. Favorite tracks are “She Bangs The Drum” and “Made of Stone”.
// Favs: — Score: Strong 3
Great background music
It was ok? Was kinda distracted, didn't hold my attention
decent kind of pre-grunge combo Brit sound. Probably won't go back.
Gutes Album!
Strong solid
Nice, but far from extraordinary.
I’ve never heard of this band and didn’t recognize a single song. I liked it overall, but nothing really jumped out as amazing. Lots of reverb though. lol.
Kindof a bipolar album. 50% is pretty standard issue 80s Brit rock close to the Cure or the theme song to Pete & Pete. 50% is jangle with a dance beat, and its rad. I'd like 100% jangle dance. A whole album of it with seamless transitions between tracks. Just let it play and a whole hour breezes buy, feeling good, getting shit DONE at work, and GROOVIN. I most appreciate the last two songs for not being afraid to jam in circles for 9 minutes each. B
Quintessential Brit Pop. Pretty good, I liked the synthy 80's vibes that were going on
.
The Beatles, by My Bloody Valentine for most of the album. Cherry picked, some songs are fun, but overall it still feels a little too long with rare alternatives to the shoegazy, distant rock sound. Good guitarship comes to save your ears from sleepiness on most tracks tho and that's a good thing.
Sounded like the byrds or Dylan
Good but there wasn’t one song that really drew me in
02/09 - Today I worked on setting up details for the trims around the fume hoods, helping Vidula with miscellaneous tasks in the model, and coordination at the Drum Storage building (conversations during the break out meeting). The Stone Roses were a band I had not heard of before I received this album. I thought they had some great songs, my favorite being Made of Stone. The only issue I had with this band was the stage presence. The lead single seemed extremely boring and the songs are so slow I image a concert would be quite boring.
Disco popero suave bastante repetitivo.
ok. just ok.
Favourite track: I Wanna Be Adored
5
One of those classic albums that I had never really sat down around to listen. It's really good! Love how pre-90s it sounds.
jotenkin meh, ei oikein irtoa, perus taustamusakitarapoppia
Great album, the last song is shit though. [Song For My] Sugar Spun Sister and I Wanna Be Adored were the best. Don't Stop has a very KKB vibe.
I am the insurrection, fools gold
it was p good but didn't rly stand out
Good album, representative of this era of music. The end was very intense. Probably wouldn't listen again
Twas alright. I enjoyed it for what it is, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to listen to it.
Starts off ok (with " I want to be adored") but then gets a bit bland for me. The singing gets real soft and seems to be overtaken by the instrumentals. Then the songs tend not to distinguish themselves from each other, until "made of stone"(one of the final tracks on the album, which I enjoyed the most) and "this is the one" and " I am the resurrection ". The last 4 songs of the album really shine.
First time listening to it.
got through about half of it. Actually a pretty good mellow album - need to finish it...
I guess I have to be chalked up among those who find the extreme hype around this album baffling. I thought it was fine, I enjoyed listening to it well enough and didn't dislike any of it, but I also wasn't over the moon about any of it. A little soft and slack throughout. Certainly there is Madchester scene music I like better.
Was feeling it for a while but meh
Very interesting intro to rock, chill vibes but all the songs sound similar and drag on..? maybe im too young
That was quite a pleasant surprise. I was dreading listening to this, I have never been a fan and always wondered why so many seem to think The Stone Roses are amazing. I've had people try to convert me in the past, to no avail. This time round I rather enjoyed the listen. I probably wouldn't choose to put it on, but I am no longer cringing at the mere mention of the band. It was quite enjoyable.
There's a wistful sound here that is enjoyable but I don't think I would seek it out. Though I see wouldn't change the radio if any of these songs where on.
Prettyyyyy pretttyyyyy pretty good
OK album
Wikipedia says this is considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time. I'd never heard of THEM, much less IT, and can't agree. It's solid enough, but I compare it to what I listened to yesterday (Ziggy Stardust) and find it wanting. 3 stars.
Singers voice is soothing, almost nostalgic. Gives me soft, summery vibes. I dig.
Ok
Meh. Left very little impression, TBH. It's not bad by any means. It just doesn't do much that's new or interesting. I might need to give this one another try later.
Some brilliant songs. And some boring songs. Prefer Oasis.
I'm still continuing on a streak of very average bands. I have actually never listened to The Star roses. But this was one of those bands that everybody I knew knew who it was, and I had no interest in finding out anything about them. And safe to say, this album kind of confirms that, cause this was really not doing anything for me. I just find this very mellow and bland from my tastes. I think it's better towards the end. There's a couple tracks that have quite a bit of flair to them, and it felt more audibly stimulating. On the whole, this was just very bland though, and I just would never put this on in my day-to-day life. Fav Track: Waterfall
1 Song I liked the rest was not really my thing
This is an iced latte that upon the initial few sips is tasty, but it gets a little too sweet in the long run.
replacement level late 80s brit pop. I hear nothing extraordinary or here.i
It's more fun if I imagine them singing "Bye Bye Batman"

No. 2/5
Had a pretty strong start, but started falling off to the very end. It felt like a mix of alternative rock and psychedelic. While there were some seriously strong guitar licks that kept it going, the lyrics and stories that were being told didn't align. Towards the very end, it turned more jam band like, compared to the beginning which felt more like singles. The mesh didn't fit. Album Rank: 5.6 Favorite Song: She Bangs the Drums
I don't know, not my cup of tea.
It’s not really doing anything for me… I think if the singer did more than the bare minimum it’d be a fun album, many of the instrumentals are great.
A frustrating listen. I Wanna Be Adored starts so well, but then Ian Brown's voice kicks in and takes all the shine off. (Reminiscent of Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins in that respect). I Am The Resurrection is a wonderful song with a self indulgent funk-rock outro. The rest is a mixed bag, some of which I quite enjoyed but a lot of which irritated me. Two stars.
There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but I just found it incredibly boring. I genuinely had to force myself to listen to it twice and in those two hours I didn't connect with the music once.
Yikes this was boring and monotonous. The first track was a real struggle to get through and I think that was the single! The music was commonplace and the singing was lackluster.
Decent but boring
Not my thing, really. I’m not the right age. I don’t like the sound they make - guitars or vocals. Some good riffs and good songs though
I like a couple of the tunes on here... but not much else.
Lo he escuchado y ni me acuerdo de haberlo escuchado, so…
Aight vibes. The last song was a little unexpected.
Yay! More 80s British bull shit. You won’t make me quit MI6! No matter how hard you try or how much terrible British music you keep throwing at me, I ain’t going anywhere.
Really enjoyed the 1st. Wish that the album continued the vibe of these one but fell back into a totally different feel for the remainder.
Unknown band. Decent R&R. Fair album.
I dont really like it
The definition of meh.
I wasn’t super impressed with this album but I didn’t hate it either.
Kind of boring
Playing one song from this on a long ride is fine, but it gets boring very quickly. Background effects are annoying.
Look at you pulling it out of the ditch at the last moment. Final track far & away the best of the bunch. Small handful of interesting bits sprinkled throughout. 2 stars
Incredibly boring. Saved from a 1 because at least it wasn't offensively bad.
Experimental. No es muy lo mío
Probably very un British of me but I just think they’re overrated
Not for me
J'oublier facil. 🤷♂️
I can understand why it was so different to most other albums in 1989, but I can’t really comprehend why it is so revered. I didn’t buy it back then and - to be honest - wouldn’t now.
I guess I can’t be too mad at what I get when this is the kinda gold I’m getting. So as far as I can tell this is like proto-britpop, which does put it in perspective in a way I really appreciate. This album has a lot of awesome things going for it, really psychedelic and dynamic, with tons of great songs. Songs like “Bad Bad Man,” “Made of Stone,” “I Am The Resurrection,” or my personal favorite, “Sugar Spun Sister,” all blow me away. Great vocals too, and awesome sequencing!! The sad thing about this whole ordeal is shortly after writing this I stopped caring about it, because really, it doesn’t have enough real memorability. Like all the shit I said is still true but it’s just not conspicuous enough to me anymore. I’m sorry dawg, it fell off in my head a bit. Lol. I mean it doesn’t have too much personality now does it? And like… there’s some duds on here. And also like why do half the songs not really have a point? I feel like I’m looking at all this shit and only some of it makes actual sense. Whatever man. 5.1/10
First song was OK. The rest of it - well.
This is nice enough. Nothing spectacular. Waterfall is probably the best song on here, slightly marred by the discordant repetition of the melody in Don't Stop. Bit confused by the interlude of new lyrics to Scarborough Fair for less than a minute, but why not eh? Equally confused by the two final tracks/jam sessions.
i had known of this album & of the stone roses previously but it didn’t strike a chord with me this time around. all the songs sounded quite similar, boring. it is an album i wish i loved, maybe more listens in the future will contribute to that wish of mine :)
I liked the rock and roll vibe and the guitar melodies were unique to songs I've heard before. Nothing spectacular.
While I like Waterfall, the rest of the album falls flat for me. A couple of the tracks were downright awful. Maybe I'm missing something.
Pretty narrow dynamic range, becomes noisy and fatiguing..
Didn’t stand out for me. Didn’t know them at the time either.
This album really took a long time to get going the back half of the album is what saved it from becoming a one star song, seven through 10 really clutched up and gave me some songs to come back to, but I don’t think it was a good enough effort to explore their sound more maybe if they were lucky they have another album on this list to really balance it out yeah 2.5
Britischer Rock in anderem Gewand. Aber nicht gefälliger.
I've never understood the cult following that The Stone Roses had because in my opinion they're boring, mediocre at best. The opening track, "I Wanna Be Adored", sounds like New Order. I don't understand how can the band take writing credits for the track "Elizabeth My Dear" when it is clearly a rip-off of the traditional song "Scarborough Fair".
They remind me of Oasis, Silent Hill 2's ost, and a little bit of trip-hop. I only saved 2 of the songs and don't feel like checking out the rest of the bands discography :/
a little monotonous. don't really know what's going on here
Very occasional blips of musical innovation, but for the most part, move along, nothing to see here.
Preface: I already hate this band. I really really tried to go into this open minded and give it a chance. It's just all so tepid. No emotion, no power, no performance. Faux-meaningful drivel for lyrics. I can imagine that if you were a baggy-trousered mancunian in the early 90s, this would hit like crack. But times have moved on and so should we.
I think that this could be a really amazing album to me. But not this time...
I would like to give plenty of stars just based on my feelings and memories but just cant. Album as whole is not that great but some really excellent songs that talks to me like I Wanne Be Adored.
This is one of those bands that I keep messing up with other groups. I thought this was a brit rock album, in the more slightly sleazy punk-ish vein and not in the more dancey pretty pop vibe. It's not that I hate the music, I just find it bland and not that interesting. Sort of like listening to your mates faff about with their instruments, while off their tits high on Afghan liquorice, for hours and hours and you just want to got to the pub for a beer.
Not wholly unpleasant to hear, but intellectually frustrating I can definitely see what they were aiming for, but the technical skill and musical culture just isn't there Britpop in a nutshell I was going to give this two stars until I got to the song in the reverse (don'ts stop). Just no Somehow it goes even further downhill from there? Leave Scarborough fair alone Ok Made of Stone finally makes a bit of sense. We're back at two stars but barely
No me generó nada
Love Adore Me. Some beautiful sounds on here, but not impressed by too many songs.
britpop is rarely good in the best of times, but a band with a lead singer whose wikipedia page has a "Personal Life - Views" section is never a positive sign. once again though it's nice that i don't even have to weigh that against the quality or content of the music because this just sucks. it's monotonous. technically speaking, the psychedelic rock (read: reverbed to hell unpleasant guitar tones) found in this album is the precursor to britpop, but it's all so identical it's difficult to spot the difference. it's an indictment of british music that this is pointed to as one of britain's best albums of all time.
For Britpop this is ahead of the curve, but I've got to admit I am starting to get serious British rock fatigue at this point. I never realized growing up how samey the entire genre sounds. Unfortunately this suffers from the existance of its inspirations largely following the trend, making this all feel fairly mediocre. Also Ian Brown is both a Covid Conspiracist and banned from driving so y'know, fuck him.
Alright, nothing special for me.
Really? This stuff seems so anodyne.
Average.
Not a memorable album to listento
Was so bored the whole time.
Interesting sound, not my cup of tea especially the vocals
one or two i liked but the selection has been repetitive lately
Gets me feeling 4/10
Cool
not my type of music.
I don’t wish to disparage the Stone Roses, but I find this album largely forgettable. Everything they did was done well, but at no moment did anything stand out. Until they got to the Scarborough Fair guitar with other lyrics over, which was notable solely because it’s such a recognizable acoustic stint done by more influential musicians. Again, they did everything right, they just didn’t do anything that I’m going to remember.
A bit forgettable but not too hard to listen to.
Like this one. A couple good bops here, among some overdone arrangements. Vocals are ok. Listened before? N Saved tracks? Y Favorite tracks? She Bangs the Drum, Waterfall ⭐⭐ Liked it ok. Saved a couple tracks.
Yet another album I think would resonate with me if I were from the UK. It is... unremarkable.
I'm wont remember this album by tomorrow, it has very uninteresting vocals. I should have liked this album better because it has some good things, but i just dont
I get bored after the first half. It's a good album. I Wanna Be Adored is an all time classic. I get why it's classic and all its influence and blah blah blah, but this just doesn't grab me the way I wanna be grabbed, ya know? What can I say. Sorry. Top tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, This Is The One
i think i enjoyed this but i didn't write down any notes and all memories of my experience with it have been wiped from my mind so we'll never know
um. this kind of rock i don't like. this is boring LMFAO but then i really liked the last two long ass songs so you know what, that saved them from getting a one from me
not my type of song, honestly. it feels like every song is the same.
It’s not really my style:/ I don’t see myself listening to it at all.
I only liked I wanna be adored. Love that song.
Nice
1. i wanna be adored -> sounds like he’s saying i wanna be a dog. fire song still tho mate 🤟 2. she bangs the drums -> very upbeat. awesome cool. 3. waterfall -> i like the beginning of the song. a lotta guitar 🎸. 4. don’t stop -> i feel like all these songs sound the same.. 5. bye bye bad man -> i don’t really know what he’s saying 6. elizabeth my dear -> my favourite so far. i like how it’s slow and not that many instruments in the background. quite short💔😫 7. sugar spun sister -> also a good one. reminds me of my sister 🤗 ⭐️8. made of stone -> sometimes iiiii fantasizeeeee when the streets are cold and lonely. my fav too! i like how he drags on the words, makes it catchy. the ending is nice too. 9. shoot you down -> very chill. i never wanted the love that u showed me. i think this is about rejecting someone. men are evil, never forget this 😕lowkey relate to it tho. 10. this is the one -> about a girl chasing her dreams?? 11. i am the resurrection -> wow this guy really wants to be alone. my brother just another me 😢😢😢 he seems very disgusted by connection with people. long ahh outro 12. fools gold -> funky beat
Tbh never understood all the hype about these guys. Not sad they did stop.
Decent but boring and forgettable. I didn't feel it like I want to feel music. Makes for a good background music but nothing more. Song I liked the most: "Bye bye Bad Man" Final rating: 2/5
it all sounds the same 12/29/2025
Aucune chanson n'a vraiment connecté avec moi
Boring!
It’s fine. Not impactful. Hadn’t listened to it in a while and it was a reminder I’d found bands I like better with this as a starting point. High two. already in collection
Poppy but familiar
Meh
The original Oasis. Very surprised I did not know these guys. Production was great but this mostly felt derivative. The songs were each based on a pretty basic riff or concept then repeated. The vamping didn't work etc. Good context for britpop. You could throw this on and no one would be offended.
Sunset by the beach, coming of age, teenage angst, beach boys sound, indie, easy listening
Likeable but too homogenous to be very memorable. I remember trying to listen to them back in the day and being bored by them.
Best Song: Made of Stone. The tone on the guitar for that solo was fantastic. Worst Song: Elizabeth My Dear. This barely feels like it counts as a song. Overall: When I saw the view counts on some of the songs, I thought I was about to hear something really important. Imagine my surprise when it was another mid-rock British-whine. The second half (Made of Stone onward) was better than the first, but still nothing spectacular.
Meh
I like I Want To Be Adored. Maybe this is one I’d like more with more listens? It’s just kind of mumbly.
I didn't know anything about the Stone Roses, it was a complete discovery (and a weird coincidence - I heard the opening track "I Wanna Be Adored" in a dive bar the same day this album popped up on the generator). It's a surprisingly atemporal album for 1989. Some tracks could totally be from the mid-90s, while a few others sound more like 70s folk-rock. The instrumental parts are all right, but the singing is too soft and pop-ish for me. I loved about 2-3 songs, then I felt bored. I even gave it another try the day after, and it was still the same. Nothing really stands out for me - it wasn't unpleasant to listen, I understand why it's on this list, but I certainly won't add it to my rotation. 4/10
I’m really torn about this band and this album. I’m stuck somewhere between admiration and total rejection. I admire the best parts the same way I admire the best of The Smiths. I Wanna Be Adored is a great opener, Waterfall is awesome… but then most of the rest leans way too much toward an Oasis vibe, and that just puts me off. So I’m reminded why I never really dug deeper into this band. Since most of the album doesn’t do much for me, I probably won’t come back to it, especially after that Simon & Garfunkel cover… In the UK, the revolution started by My Bloody Valentine a year later seems way more interesting to me.
Someone on here had the note that they hated I Wanna Be Adored but thankfully they loved the rest of the album and I'm the exact opposite. I've tried to like this band so many times, but the only thing that sticks for me is that first track.
Some of the songs were famous ones I knew well. They must be among the world's most historic masterpieces, but perhaps because I heard them during an indifferent phase, I didn't know the singers. I'm glad I encountered them now.
The only thing I knew The Stone Roses from was the appearance of "Fools Gold" showing up on a Comp that I had other than that I was sure that I knew the song "She Bangs The Drums" but I guess it was from a band who did it better.
An interesting album. The first couple of songs felt like a British new wave band that never managed one of the catchy hits of the genre...then things took a psychedelic turn...then suddenly Elizabeth My Dear that was Scarborough Fair with different lyrics.LOL. Not great but glad I listened.
Tolerable!!!
Not my thing vocals, too soft.
Dollar store Cure
Too smooth for my liking. I actually WANT to like it tho.
Meh
Meh
There must've been something in the water of Manchester that produced amazing bands like The Smiths, Joy Division, The Fall and Magazine. By 1989 however, that magical chemical must have evaporated because The Stone Roses' debut album from that year is a dull affair that can't hold a candle to its predecessors. Ian Brown's vocals are colorless and his melodies are uninspired. John Squire's guitar playing is basic at best. Except for some funky parts in "I Am The Resurrection", nothing particularly interesting happens in these semi-psychedelic sub-Beatlesesque songs. (The flat production doesn't help either.)
I never really liked this on its release and I don't really like it now.
It was fine. Somehow one of the 'best albums of all time' but didn't grab me at all
Felt like 1 long song
Pretty good but not really my thing.
Just ok. Sounds more 90s than 80s punk
5/10
I struggle with what to write about this album. It doesn't stand out in any way to me. It isn't bad but not something I would choose to listen to either. The instruments sound good and the singing is nice but I can't remember the rhythms or lyrics after just listening through the album. Extremely middle of the road in every way which isn't a great thing when it comes to music.
This was huge when it first came out, but I didn't really get what the appeal. Thirty years later and... same.
Generic rock album. Listened to it 1.5x because I forgot the initial listen, but confirmed that nothing was catchy.
Started interesting. Lost interest. This is the One in particular was annoying. Don't understand why this is groundbreaking or critically acclaimed...?
Pretty groovy but not a bunch of standouts on here, individually or as a whole.
Not awful.
I bloody hated the Stone Roses at the time and I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever listened to this album. It must say something about them though that I knew all the songs, and it probably says something about me that I still think they’re rubbish. I just can’t get past the fact that Ian Brown absolutely cannot sing. Some front people get away with that pretty spectacularly (Mark E Smith for example) but check YouTube for ANY live Ian Brown performance and his vocals are so unlistenable, it’s hilarious. They struck a chord with the kidz at the time though, and there’s no denying their influence, I’m just relieved I don’t have to listen to them.
Off the cuff remark: at the time Stone Roses seemed synonymous with stupid hats and a shitty attitude. I tried hard not to think of that when I listened to this, but it was hard. Some tunes that were okay, in a loose indie pop way, those I wasn't familiar with were surprisingly nondescript. Standout track: probably She Bangs the Drum Revisit?: seems less offensive now, but still not something I'll be bothered to listen to again.
Ok songs but muddy production makes it hard to hear. Some interesting ideas but that’s it.
perus
Lots of bangers but this brings back not great memories for me. Avoid.
I understand the significance of this album in terms of transition between two periods, and it's got a few good songs. But otherwise, meh.
This playlist was great, I personally wouldn't listen to these songs on any regular basis except for "Sugar Spun Sister" which I am adding to my playlist!
Good melodies but for me, too bland by half.
Meh. Sounds like countless other bands before and after. The music is not bad but doesn’t make anyone clutch their pearls.
Not for me
2 and a bit good tracks, and I think their fans know it deep down
I was surprised by this. Put off by the scene, image and hype at the time and the painful indie discos that followed. Didn’t hate it. It has substance and musicality, and had a nice 80s feel to it for me.
We can vibe with this lads Galet hur bra första låten var å sen blev det skit Resurrection var lite bättre iaf
Nothing remarkable
Mediocre Indy
One hit and the rest is quite boring.
Ok - genericish music, but very weird texts that I did not enjoy
Started off feeling a 3, but issa 2 fo sho
I wasn't wholly impressed, but She Bangs the Drums and Fools Gold were stellar cuts.
Not bad rock, but kind forgettable.
Not a huge fan, some of the more upbeat songs reminded me of the smiths in a good way. High two
Felt very bland, not bad though, just kinda elevator music-ish?
...
Not for me
sounds like R.E.M but if they were from the late 60s
It's clearly influential, but it all feels a bit up itself for me. She Bangs the Drum gets a star, and to be honest there's not much else I remember from it other than it all being very "we want to be the new Beatles" faffing about.
Not very good. Too long and boring. 2
Very bland
The Stone Roses have a very distinct genre-bending sound (A mix of 60s pop, 80s pop, 90s rock sound.) However the lyrics were a bit strange and the repetition put me off of a lot of the songs.
i wasnt interested in this for whatever reason
4/10
It was good, but not memorable to me.
Easily forgettable
I listened to this five times, and I still can't remember anything. I like the album cover, though.
After the first two tracks (I've always thought Fool's Gold was brilliant), there was a quite a dip until Made of Stone. It felt like the same song two or three times until that point. Then after Made of Stone, it continued. 5/10
# 472 : 02/05/2025 : The Stone Roses I don't love it, I don't hate it. A couple of things stood out but no songs that connected with me. It’s good, but not great Favourite track : (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister
Odd mix of alternative and pop elements. Mostly 70s pop feel but nothing too unique. Not sure i liked any of the songs. 4/10
At last some Dutch music! Ah, first song was really good, the rest sounds like the same so-so song
A bit all over the place
Sounded a bit like Oasis
Repetitive, not remembered songs, nothing catchy.
Elizabeth my dear the best on the album by far. Made of stone is pretty good as well.
Listened Before? N Not too bad... just kind of droning and same-y from song to song. I don't really get it, but apparently millions of people do judging by their Spotify numbers. Fool's Gold was a nice change of pace at the end but... its NINE minutes long. ugh. Oh well. Added to library? N Songs added to playlist: Waterfall
I like the sound but its very basic
I am a person that listens to music based on my moods so maybe that's why I wasn't feeling this album. I thought it was okay. I can see based on 1989 how it revolutionized British music as it was a departure from the music of the day and paved the way for bands like Oasis and Coldplay. Best songs are Waterfall and I Am The Resurection in my humble opinion.
Sounds like the band from “That Thing You Do”. Some interesting spots.
I didn't hear anything here that caught my attention or interested me.
On ronfle.
Probably wouldn’t seek it out, but not too bad. Good background music. Reminds me of something that would be in the movie Lost Boys.
Whiny and incoherent Indie Rock.
boooorrrriiiiiinnnnggggg, jk but not doing much for me
Not the first time that I've listened to The Stone Roses this week. What was it about wanting to turn off 50 Cent that made me think to put this on? Mumbling probably. I Wanna Be Adored has the poorly enunciated swagger that would come to characterise gangsta rap and the Oasis Brothers in the 90s and 00s - and I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it more here than there. However, I am baffled as to how such bravado manages to convince so many people that it is deserved and how many listeners roll over and accept Oasis's 'best band in the world' schtick. All these loudmouths throw their names into the conversation and credulous fools accept it as an impartial observation. The myth that The Stone Roses' debut is a great or significant record is not born out by listening to it. John Squire's status as a guitar hero is undermined when all he does is hammer-on and pull-off or wah wah wah. And, as for his status as a visual artist? The cover is sophomoric nonsense. A legendary rhythm section is revealed to be groovy only when augmented by bongos, whereas a comparative, Byrds-inspired four-piece, The Smiths, manages to sound full and funky at the back, with more ornate arpeggiating, and a more articulate self-aggrandising, conspiracy-theorist vocalist up front. In fairness, Mani will go on to be great in Primal Scream and Screamadelica is a much more complete ecstasy record than this. The top of the album powers through on familiarity. Indeed, I know Waterfall backwards. Their debut record and they are already out of ideas, scraping the barrel with one track reversed and a cringeworthy extrapolation of Scarborough Fair. The rest is basic and tedious. Bye Bye Bad Man, Sugar Spun Sister, etc. is bad music played badly. Only I Am The Resurrection is any fun at all, but is that braggadocio ever unearned! The final nail in the coffin of the myth is that the original UK release doesn't even include their too long, too repetitive, to mumbly masterpiece, Fool's Gold. The beauty of that song is that you don't have to listen to it the whole way through, the small quantity of musical material you remember of it is all you need. 2 If there’s one thing preventing this record from being the best and most important record ever made it’s that a lot of the music is no good. And several other things. The opening and closing tracks are good; I wanna be adored and (the first three and a half minutes anyway) of I am the resurrection. In the ‚nice enough’ column we have She bangs the drums, Waterfall, the chorus of Made of Stone. The rest is dull except the stuff that doesn’t even deserve that designation because it is simply a waste of a listener‘s time - Don‘t stop, Elizabeth my dear, and the jam session sellotaped onto I am the resurrection. Fool‘s Gold, as all civilised people agree, isn’t on this album. The album is poorly recorded and generally sounds like shit; Ian Brown can’t sing well so making him do it in a school corridor was a poor decision. I like the cover art. 2.5/5
I wasn't going to listen to this because I've never liked The Stone Roses bit it got so many positive reviews I thought I would give it a go... My first instincts were correct.
Great opening track, but this album loses steam quick.0
This album was inoffensive, kind of all same same. Not terrible, not mind blowing.
liked the music - did not like the lyrics
This was ok, most of the songs are longer than necessary. If you’re wishing that the Artic Monkeys and Oasis had a baby, and it was raised by The Beatles, this is the album for you. But not for me 1001 album worthy: No - 43/76
The Good: Jackson Pollock cover art! The Bad: Not finding the same kind of excitement in the music The Ugly: Stone Roses are just that; roses from stone, lacking beauty et al This album has been conflicting to a certain extent: I hadn’t heard it before, yet I do recall hearing about them… and then it dawned on me that, when I first heard of the name, i was confused by thinking they’d be like Guns & Roses or LA Guns… and they aren’t. Musically there is nothing wrong with the album at all, but the singer sounds too much like he belongs in a late 60s psychodelic band, or something like that, and I’ve gained a massive dislike for that kind of singing since starting my journey on this list. I don’t know… i feel bad for them, and for all the people who believe this is awesome, but it isn’t that, nor bad, it’s just grey—the color of a stone rose. 2 1/2*
i wanna be adored seeehr langwilig she bang the drums coole titel und no cute alt rock? da isch afoch chli the cure type stuff. cool. aber jo. okaaay guete song. waterfall etz au no cute. ok nöd sooo spannend. aber de schluss mit gitarre time isch geil. dont stop isch alles hinderschi? aso en teil? huere geil gmacht. bye bye bad man cute, ich find immernonig dass das album sött uf dere liste sii. elizabeth my dear isch scarborough fair ok cute. song for my sugar dingsbums funny cute okay jo cooli chords gitarre super aber ähm ok langwilig. shoot you down findi etz suuuper schön, wird labgsam warm mit de steiroose. this is the juan chli lang und langwilig. this is the ressucrection suuuper giti sound.

Mid band and not great at all. Album is Ok makes. Never been into this band cause I fell they are bland and too popish.
Nice enough
This apparently holds a special place in a lot of people's hearts and minds. It's my first time consciously listening to this band and it's all decidedly forgettable to me.
This album is beloved… by others, not me.
Bland sounding rock album
Irrelevant.
This album was pretty meh overall. It had some ok stuff, but also some pretty bad stuff. Not much was really my speed.
Rock, 1989 -> 2
Not bad British rock. I enjoyed myself listening to this album. 2.5
Seems it was somewhat novel at the time but i found it generic
I really like She Bangs the Drums, but couldn't get into much else
Weak voice. Some interesting guitar. Not very complex. Lags in the middle. Singles are good.
Never liked the Stone Roses and that definitely coloured my impression of this album. Boring and jangly.
Meh all around, some of the instrumentals were really good but other than that it didn't do it for me.
Most of this is entirely forgettable. Only the last track “Fools Gold” is good enough to make you divert your attention and take notice. Overall an achievement of mediocrity.
Surprisingly modern album. Some very 80s sound, but grunge. And it really feels like indie dream pop.
It's fine, 2.5
Just what we needed, another English Rock debut album. Need I say more? Is it fine? Yes. Does it deserve to be on this list? No.
I was pretty bored by most of this. I got into the groove during a few songs but as a whole, not much my thing.
Getting pretty tired of all these English "rock" bands that sound basically like this. For the 1001 albums you should listen to before you die, 500 of them are kinda the same album
One dimensional and whiny. Nay
I like the first song and I thought I was going to love the rest of the album, but I did not. It’s like a cross between the beach boys and the cure, but not in a good way.
I only have a passing knowledge of The Stone Roses' existence, though I did recognize Fools Gold (which IMO's the stand-out track). The albums was fine, but nothing more than that.
Like, it was fine. When it started I was sort of fighting against it. I had a thought like "this sounds sort of like music I would put on to concentrate on something, but I would never choose this specific music". By the end it actually had slid into the background and I was focusing on work. But I don't "it's tolerable when you forget you're listening to it" to be a huge selling point.
Another mid album, it’s fine, but nothing to write home about. Kind of boring, but pleasant enough to listen to while working, I guess.
There is a Stone Roses fan in my house, it isn't me. The music is fine, I heard a nice bass line every now and again but I found this album to be ....flat, it seems like whenever the vocals come in the song just deflates. I wish they would pick a lane -- emo-pop or high energy brit-pop (beause this mid-tempo shit is exhausting, it seems like they are stuck in 2 gear and trying to pass a truck on the freeway. (this was written half-way through the album) Ok, now that I am all the way through the album -- I liked "shoot you down" the vocals didn't drag down the music and I also thought "Made of Stone" and "I am the Resurrection" were pretty OK.
A bit experimental, but not the type of experimental I particularly enjoy. The music just kind of felt like noise, not necessarily bad noise but I didn't find myself moved.
I quite like the third track; the record at first is giving a nostalgic 80's dance club vibe. Track 4, Don't Stop, on the other hand was just noise. The next two flow into 1960's Beetles or Peter, Paul, and Mary sounds. The album is a little all over the place, tbh.
