The Stone Roses have a very distinct genre-bending sound (A mix of 60s pop, 80s pop, 90s rock sound.) However the lyrics were a bit strange and the repetition put me off of a lot of the songs.

Easily forgettable
I listened to this five times, and I still can't remember anything. I like the album cover, though.
After the first two tracks (I've always thought Fool's Gold was brilliant), there was a quite a dip until Made of Stone. It felt like the same song two or three times until that point. Then after Made of Stone, it continued. 5/10

Odd mix of alternative and pop elements. Mostly 70s pop feel but nothing too unique. Not sure i liked any of the songs. 4/10

I like the sound but its very basic
I am a person that listens to music based on my moods so maybe that's why I wasn't feeling this album. I thought it was okay. I can see based on 1989 how it revolutionized British music as it was a departure from the music of the day and paved the way for bands like Oasis and Coldplay. Best songs are Waterfall and I Am The Resurection in my humble opinion.

Not the first time that I've listened to The Stone Roses this week. What was it about wanting to turn off 50 Cent that made me think to put this on? Mumbling probably. I Wanna Be Adored has the poorly enunciated swagger that would come to characterise gangsta rap and the Oasis Brothers in the 90s and 00s - and I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it more here than there. However, I am baffled as to how such bravado manages to convince so many people that it is deserved and how many listeners roll over and accept Oasis's 'best band in the world' schtick. All these loudmouths throw their names into the conversation and credulous fools accept it as an impartial observation. The myth that The Stone Roses' debut is a great or significant record is not born out by listening to it. John Squire's status as a guitar hero is undermined when all he does is hammer-on and pull-off or wah wah wah. And, as for his status as a visual artist? The cover is sophomoric nonsense. A legendary rhythm section is revealed to be groovy only when augmented by bongos, whereas a comparative, Byrds-inspired four-piece, The Smiths, manages to sound full and funky at the back, with more ornate arpeggiating, and a more articulate self-aggrandising, conspiracy-theorist vocalist up front. In fairness, Mani will go on to be great in Primal Scream and Screamadelica is a much more complete ecstasy record than this. The top of the album powers through on familiarity. Indeed, I know Waterfall backwards. Their debut record and they are already out of ideas, scraping the barrel with one track reversed and a cringeworthy extrapolation of Scarborough Fair. The rest is basic and tedious. Bye Bye Bad Man, Sugar Spun Sister, etc. is bad music played badly. Only I Am The Resurrection is any fun at all, but is that braggadocio ever unearned! The final nail in the coffin of the myth is that the original UK release doesn't even include their too long, too repetitive, to mumbly masterpiece, Fool's Gold. The beauty of that song is that you don't have to listen to it the whole way through, the small quantity of musical material you remember of it is all you need. 2 If there’s one thing preventing this record from being the best and most important record ever made it’s that a lot of the music is no good. And several other things. The opening and closing tracks are good; I wanna be adored and (the first three and a half minutes anyway) of I am the resurrection. In the ‚nice enough’ column we have She bangs the drums, Waterfall, the chorus of Made of Stone. The rest is dull except the stuff that doesn’t even deserve that designation because it is simply a waste of a listener‘s time - Don‘t stop, Elizabeth my dear, and the jam session sellotaped onto I am the resurrection. Fool‘s Gold, as all civilised people agree, isn’t on this album. The album is poorly recorded and generally sounds like shit; Ian Brown can’t sing well so making him do it in a school corridor was a poor decision. I like the cover art. 2.5/5
I wasn't going to listen to this because I've never liked The Stone Roses bit it got so many positive reviews I thought I would give it a go... My first instincts were correct.

The Bad: Not finding the same kind of excitement in the music The Ugly: Stone Roses are just that; roses from stone, lacking beauty et al This album has been conflicting to a certain extent: I hadn’t heard it before, yet I do recall hearing about them… and then it dawned on me that, when I first heard of the name, i was confused by thinking they’d be like Guns & Roses or LA Guns… and they aren’t. Musically there is nothing wrong with the album at all, but the singer sounds too much like he belongs in a late 60s psychodelic band, or something like that, and I’ve gained a massive dislike for that kind of singing since starting my journey on this list. I don’t know… i feel bad for them, and for all the people who believe this is awesome, but it isn’t that, nor bad, it’s just grey—the color of a stone rose. 2 1/2*

Mid band and not great at all. Album is Ok makes. Never been into this band cause I fell they are bland and too popish.

This apparently holds a special place in a lot of people's hearts and minds. It's my first time consciously listening to this band and it's all decidedly forgettable to me.

Never liked the Stone Roses and that definitely coloured my impression of this album. Boring and jangly.
Meh all around, some of the instrumentals were really good but other than that it didn't do it for me.
Most of this is entirely forgettable. Only the last track “Fools Gold” is good enough to make you divert your attention and take notice. Overall an achievement of mediocrity.

Just what we needed, another English Rock debut album. Need I say more? Is it fine? Yes. Does it deserve to be on this list? No.
I was pretty bored by most of this. I got into the groove during a few songs but as a whole, not much my thing.
Getting pretty tired of all these English "rock" bands that sound basically like this. For the 1001 albums you should listen to before you die, 500 of them are kinda the same album

I like the first song and I thought I was going to love the rest of the album, but I did not. It’s like a cross between the beach boys and the cure, but not in a good way.
I only have a passing knowledge of The Stone Roses' existence, though I did recognize Fools Gold (which IMO's the stand-out track). The albums was fine, but nothing more than that.
Like, it was fine. When it started I was sort of fighting against it. I had a thought like "this sounds sort of like music I would put on to concentrate on something, but I would never choose this specific music". By the end it actually had slid into the background and I was focusing on work. But I don't "it's tolerable when you forget you're listening to it" to be a huge selling point.

There is a Stone Roses fan in my house, it isn't me. The music is fine, I heard a nice bass line every now and again but I found this album to be ....flat, it seems like whenever the vocals come in the song just deflates. I wish they would pick a lane -- emo-pop or high energy brit-pop (beause this mid-tempo shit is exhausting, it seems like they are stuck in 2 gear and trying to pass a truck on the freeway. (this was written half-way through the album) Ok, now that I am all the way through the album -- I liked "shoot you down" the vocals didn't drag down the music and I also thought "Made of Stone" and "I am the Resurrection" were pretty OK.
A bit experimental, but not the type of experimental I particularly enjoy. The music just kind of felt like noise, not necessarily bad noise but I didn't find myself moved.
I quite like the third track; the record at first is giving a nostalgic 80's dance club vibe. Track 4, Don't Stop, on the other hand was just noise. The next two flow into 1960's Beetles or Peter, Paul, and Mary sounds. The album is a little all over the place, tbh.

Dit album verdient naar mijn mening dan ook geen uitgebreidde review. Dus ga ik het lekker hier bij laten, ik ga verder slapen want dit album is daar dan wel weer ideaal voor! This is considered a classic by many of my friends. I've never understood why. I've tried it many times over the years and I keep expecting to learn why people are drawn to it, but I never do. It's got some merit but nothing on here is compelling or leads me to want to listen to it again. Only one song ever kinda got on the radio, "I Wanna Be Adored". Vanilla vocals, pedestrian beats, weak hooks, busy instrumentation with that murky early 90's mix, all this leads me to say this is a boring album. Fine guitaring on "Made Of Stone", but that is the highlight for me. Not making my Top 1000, nope.
Not a huge fan of alternative music, and this album didn't really present anything special in my opinion. Pretty good instrumentals though
Honestly, I've tried, but for the most part this album does absolutely nothing for me. There is one noticeable exception -- the extended instrumental outro on I am the Resurrection absolutely slaps.

I just don't get this. I listened to this years ago and felt nothing. I still feel nothing from it. On paper I should love this: '80s UK sad boy is one of my favorite fake genres, but this is just a total snooze.
Starts out with some meh blah blah blah, then the middle is blah blah meh, and a resounding meh meh blahbbity blah blah at the end. Just underwhelming and nothing unique here. Seemed to blend into one long song with no purpose or direction. Definitely not the marriage of the Rolling Stones and Guns N Roses that I expected.😜✌🏻
First track is a classic. Can’t remember the rest even immediately after listening. Nice sound but not much more to it. Can see how it’d have been quite new sounding at the time. Liked it way more than I thought, still.

A very spot on mid album. I didn't hate it. But I didn't like it. Straight forwardy. Apparently they wrote this record and couldn't capitalize on it with a sophomore record for roughly 5 years. Probably because they're write very "meh" music. I'm curious to hear more brit pop rock. I'm hoping it's a little more enthusiastic then this.

I could barely hear the vocals, and as the voice is my favorite musical instrument and lyrics are very important to me, I wasn't a huge fan of this. There are hints of something more enjoyable, like some guitar riffs, but then the vocals join back in and I zone out.
Knowing only ”I wanna be adored” which is a song that I really adooore, I had my hopes high. Unfortunately the rest of the album was bit of a led down, it did absolutely nothing to me. That said, I can still appreciate it though.

They sure did like that jangle in Manchester back then, huh? I don’t necessarily hate this. There’s a few cool things going on here, and it’s way less insufferable than The Smiths. I don’t expect to come back to this. It’s a little too long and I’m not the biggest fan of famous Manc dudes apparently. Apparently lead singer is a Covid conspiracy theorist and this album inspired Liam Gallagher to sing in a band one day. So yeah. I’m not going to feel too bad about not rating this highly.
Mildly promising future, unless this is their best. Are they lemons depicted on the cover? It's mostly lemons in the sleeve.

Unaufregendes Album. Die erste Hälfte hat mir noch deutlich besser gefallen, wonach es etwas eintönig wurde und ich versucht war etwas Anderes zu hören. Ich konnte den Schweinehund aber überwinden und habe es durchgezogen. ✊

Second half of the album is better, but nothing really to blow you away. Soft vocals get drowned out too often. There are some interesting grooves and riffs so can see why it's a hut for some. But it just didn't really do anything for me and I don't think I'd ever go seeking to listen to this album

Probably not an album I would seek out again. Very indicative of the area and time that the album came out in. Some decent songs but nothing to hang my hat on. If I'm going to listen to this type of music it would probably be Radiohead or The Cranberries

I'm going to try doing this track-by-track for once. 1. I Wanna Be Adored - I don't know how this could be less interesting or more repetitive. 2. She Bangs the Drums - I just listened to it and I don't remember anything about it 3. Waterfall - Cute little riff. Diet Collective Soul. 4. Don't Stop - Wait... is this Waterfall but spun backwards on the record player? 5. Bye Bye Bad Man - Kind of like all the previous songs, but in double time! 6. Elizabeth My Dear - Simon & Garfunkel but brief and boring 7. (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister - I swear I didn't set out to pan this album. This one's uptempo at least. Same dumb lyrics. 8. Made of Stone - Hey now we're talking. Best song on the album so far, by far. Dark lyrics, dynamic music, epic solo. 9. Shoot You Down - OK, we're back to the typical Brit Rock slow songs. 10. This Is the One - Oh hey, another one that just finished and I can't remember at all. 11. I Am the Resurrection - More angry lyrics, I can dig that. Also a nice jammy bridge/solo out of nowhere. Unfortunately as it came out of nowhere, it also decided to hang around for 5+ minutes. 12. Fools Gold - Oh god, I was just complaining about an 8 minute song, then a 10 minute song comes on. This one's like Kula Shaker on Ambien. I fast forwarded through it so you don't have to - no, it never really changes. Summary: a whole lot of filler with Made of Stone in between.

If you have a blunt in your hand and have literally nothing else to listen to, this is acceptable. It’s like if I had to choose between this and sticking needles in my fingers once a day; at first I’d choose the needles, but over time I’d be like… “you know I wish I chose listening to this album again because it’s not as bad as this”

another one i just maybe can't appreciate enough? the song that most caught my attention was the one to with the greensleeves melody, but probably only because i recognized the lyrics. i should probably give this another, closer listen.

Le genre d'album moins nice que prévu. Soft encore, mais moins que soffft. J'ai bien aimé le ton plus funky de la toune de la fin.
Zo'n album dat je meerdere keren luistert omdat het eigenlijk geen enkele indruk achterlaat. Het kabbelt het ene oor in en het andere weer uit. Het valt dus ook niet op in negatieve zin, maar je kunt er verder ook niks mee. Prima voor iets wat je op de rommelmarkt vindt, maar niet voor een lijst met de zogenaamd beste 1001 albums.
It's okay, but nothing particularly special. The second to last song is a really great instrumental, but the rest are just fairly pedestrian rock songs. Maybe groundbreaking at the time, but it doesn't seem to hold up.

Definitely peaked with the first song on the album. The first song was great, and really interesting. But after that, it kind of just devolved into a samey, bland rock album with not a lot special about it; nothing awful, but not really anything I'd listen to again

It is indie music from the 80s and it sounds every bit of it.
Very overrated. I mean, Waterfall and Resurrection are indie disco classics, but it feels like everyone decided to venerate this one decentish album randomly. It sounds little different to a less funny Carter USM or a less hard Pop Will Eat Itself, a less funky Happy Mondays and I could go on. I feel like a lot of people see having a thick crackhead as your frontman is some sort of yardstick of authenticity (yeah I'm looking at you Libertines/Oasis/Winehouse fans) when it really suggests they should have found someone better. The fact that a lot of these former loved up pillheads who worship this album have grown up to be gammony Tories who worship Farage at the altar of GB News says all you need to know, really. But regardless, Waterfall and Resurrection are ace. Made of Stone, This is the One and I Wanna Be Adored are alright but a bit ploddy. Fools Gold is obviously great but wasn't included on the album originally. The best bit about the album was the ecstacy that made people think it was better than it was. I'll happily have a 25th anniversary reissue of readily available good pingers. I'd probably give this album an extra star if that happened. Postscript - Just... Ian Brown man. If there were ever somebody who would have benefited from joining the 27 club. He and Morrissey should team up and do a Thick As Mince Tour.

listened to this after I was just finish listening to In Rainbows. I was still impressed with In Rainbows. I enjoyed this one too but to be honest, I cant recall any of the songs the next day. 2.6/5

Not really for me . Maybe on more listens I would like a few song, but for now I am not really hearing anything that stands out.

Not terrible and I was really getting into the first song, then it went off the rails and downhill from there.
This one is OK. It sounds ahead of its time but if u put them in time with those later 90s alt rockers it sounds kinda generic. Some good grooves but idk if that saves it.

This album started off ok but quickly went onto pretentious indie hipster sounds. I was genuinely annoyed by some of the songs on this album. Many went on too long and this album felt too long in general. To my surprise it was only 60 minutes? Can you also imagine how stupid this guy is that he meant to draw a French flag, but actually drew the Dutch flag! Would've given it 3 stars but deducting one for that too.
It's fine, whatever. Faded into the background. I know people who rave about this album but it barely left a mark. A couple of tracks sounded like 1980s era Stranglers. Oh well.
Not bad music, but the vocals/lyrics tether nooses to the vibe to make it all a bit drab.
I didn't get the hype over this album. For me, it just sounds like old pop. Sounds old today as it probably sounded in 1989.

I'd never really listened to the Stone Roses before, I always knew the name and the album cover but when it came up I realised I didn't know it. Probably for the best because I found it completely naff dad music, so boring and wet.
Not bad, a little bland but didn't hate it.
Meh.. There were some good moments. Some good grooves. Otherwise, I felt like it was pretty corny. Just seems like it didn’t age well? Maybe? Idk.. it didn’t seem super long even though it was an hour long. That’s a plus, by the way. I wanted it to end the whole time. I guess the universe answered me.
More British dad rock. I've listened to this before and it's alright. Better than most Madchester and Britpop shite. Fools Gold is a great track which didn't appear on the original tracklist (as it was a non-album single). If they made a whole album with that funk-leaning sound, I'd be into it. As it stands, lots of the tracks are dreary indie-pop. Waterfall is catchy dreary pop. Then there's a song that sounds like Waterfalls played backwards, just because it's psychedelic, innit our kid. 2.5*

This album feels uninspired and repetitive. The songs are fine, but nothing that you haven't heard before or that was made in a better way after.
(3) I appreciated being slapped in the face with weirdness for the five minutes of the fourth track of this. Don't understand the acclaim, but Don't Stop and what followed it make the Stone Roses' self-titled a worthwhile listen. Those first three tracks are pretty conventional, and so are the general arrangements. Th roughness of the entire presentation is intriguing but not quite right.
The singer has a pretty good voice, but awful enunciation. It constantly sounds like he’s slurring or mumbling the lyrics. Between that and the terrible mixing it was a struggle to understand a word he was saying, even when I relistened after reading the lyrics. A pretty definitive “meh” from me; it’s catchy in a generic sort of way, but the aforementioned issues with the vocals made it a chore to listen to otherwise.

2.5 | Dirían en inglés es un disco muy bien "book-ended" muy buenas la primera y última canciones, pero nada más. No es un mal disco, pero se me hizo solo un disco "bien" a secas. Es primera vez que lo escucho, aunque sí lo había visto mencionado antes como una maravilla, entre los mejores discos (o el mejor en algunas listas) de toda la historia del Reino Unido... Perdón pero eso es una estupidez, las cosas que hace bien el disco no son tan brillantes, e incluso esas cosas buenas no son tan originales (para lo "revolucionarios" que les llaman suenan demasiado a copias de lo que hacían The Byrds 15 años antes). Las letras absolutamente sin sentido, sin deseos de decir nada más allá de una tonada mensa pegajosa. Se nota que son el inicio del Britpop, se nota que son cosa fuerte para que existiera el sonido de Oasis (lo cual no es cumplido, mas bien vergüenza le debiera de dar a quien fuera culpable de eso) y el disco no es una aberración, pero llamarles revolucionarios, genios o "el mejor disco de Reino Unido"? No... ni cerca.
Siento que el disco tiene los elementos para gustarme como pocos. También me deja un sabor insípido, salvo un par de canciones y ciertos momentos que claramente rescata el britpop. Leí que las letras están inspiradas por los disturbios estudiantiles de Francia y supongo que por eso no hubo atracción por la lírica en general. Es agradable para oírlo sin mucha atención, aunque creo que comienza demasiado lento y meloso, aumentando el beat y los guitarrazos hacia el final. Songs: Made of Stone, I Am the Resurrection.

I don't understand the AllMusic review calling this a "dance" album. It just kind of sounds like another britpop record to me. I do like how "I Am the Resurrection" gets pretty interesting near the end, but I didn't really see the hype behind this. Favorite tracks: "(Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister", "I Am the Resurrection"

Hmmm, I hadn't heard of this group. On my first listen, I'm not a fan. Across the entire album I found the the vocals to be like a soft static. Not irritating, but with no weight. Two songs that I like are "Made of Stone," and "Fools Gold." While the the singing is inconsequential on both, the guitar on "Made of Stone" has a nice rock sound, and "Fools Gold" has a jazzy funk that's fun. Stone Roses is that kid in school that teachers say if they applied themselves they would do better. That's how I feel about this album.

Very bleh to me. I’d never heard of them before this and I think I would’ve been fine without them.
There were some interesting moments on this album, but mostly bland brit rock to me. I can't really rate this higher than a one.
My first impression was that this was pretty meh... then I read all the rave reviews on Wikipedia (and here) and gave it a second, customary playthrough to see what I missed. My opinion didn't change. In fact, now I'm even more sure that it is, indeed, as mehsome as they come. Seriously, there's not a single standout track here. Nothing about this is interesting or memorable.... other than maybe those last two tracks being way longer than they should be. I can find no value in this, and I'm puzzled why it's so highly rated.
I don’t know who this Colin Larkin is, but I can speak with conviction that after this entry I will not being listening to his 1000 albums after this experiment is done.
Technically nothing wrong. Everything in tune. Impressive or groundbreaking - NO. Just another britpop album.

Another British band that was part of a scene I was not familiar with at the time, but now see in retrospective. Still don't even remotely identify with that scene, other than there were several cool, new sounding, bands that had some personality. Completely guessing here, but the Stone Roses were probably the coolest of these bands (like, Blur? Verve? Oasis? dunno) but never had the mainstream success of the others and broke up and did other projects. They were either loved or hated at the time and now people think the opposite of what they thought then. I wonder if these guys ever heard of The Beatles /s Not that there's anything wrong with emulating the Beatles - everyone does/did it. Not bad - if you don't like the "sound" of Stone Roses, there are a few songs near the end of the album with a cleaner, rock tone. Kind of a Herman's Hermits vibe to some of these tunes.

This is indie-rock that shows you what happens when a band takes itself way too seriously while sounding like they’re performing from the bottom of a well. Ian Brown’s vocals are somewhere between “I just rolled out of bed” and “I just rolled out of bed but also I’m high.” Every song sounds like it’s building up to something and then … just fizzles. They’re so laid back, they’re practically horizontal, and by the time it’s over, you’ll want to lie down too, just to process how little you felt.
Alternative band with no unique sound. Kinda boring.

I don’t think I have ever heard an album with worse sound mixing ever. It sounded like they recorded everything inside of a shipping container. There are also odd stylistic choices like recording backmasking for long lengths of track. Not a fan.
The Stone Roses were never on my radar. Never stood out for me before and after listening Im not sure why it made the list.
