A solid hardcore punk album that does what it should. Great production value for a punk album. Just not my head space these days, tho I'd probably like it to mow the lawn to.

Lacks irony for me and I don’t like screamy kid vocals. Prefer the melody of UK punk - much more digestible.

I respect the musicality of Minor Threat’s one and only album, but there’s just not a lot I am able to take out of it.

Punk hasn’t changed much.

A big milestone in the hardcore music history, but it's equally hardcore for a normal person to listen to it nowadays. Good outro song, when they finally slowed down the tempo for a minute, but all the rest was quite incomprehensible mess, which I didn't enjoy in the slightest. I'm pretty disappointed, I thought it would be a much better album.

I can't choose more than ⭐⭐. But, as always, it's totally subjective!

Fast drumming! INCOHERENT YELLING!! Power chords! This album is 21 minutes and 40 seconds long, or about 18 minutes and 36 seconds longer than my tolerance for it, because every song sounded the same. The only redeeming factor was the guitar; even if the riffs are simplistic, they're entertaining.

I love a 22 minute album. All the heart eye emojis for that, at least. The actual music...eh? I don't consider screaming to be singing.

I'm not a punk efficianado by any means, but Sid & Nancy freaked me out enough as a child to discover the Sex Pistols at the ripe age of 14. Fast forward many years later and appreciating yacht rock more and more, I found this a bit wreckless and hard to listen to. The first couple of songs anyway. But then I appreciated the music the more I listened. But the lead vocals were horrendous. It's like the kids on the block were all afraid to sing and they got drunk uncle Larry to sit in with the band. The best song for me was when they were trying almost spoken word.

The music was cool, the attempted singing was dreadful.

p519. 1983. 2 stars. Foulmouthed, shouty proto Green Day without the tunes - "Cashing In" could well be a Green Day discard. Already 5 years behind the curve when it was issued. Curiosity value only.

wikipedia informs me this album is some sort of landmark in punk rock. personally, i didn't hear it. i mean, yeah, it was definitely hardcore punk, but i was left wanting more. i guess other artists took inspiration from minor threat's only album, but i'm sure they did it better. for what it's worth, i like the album cover. the symbolism is easy enough to understand, but the more "basic" drawing of the black sheep, versus the others, sends it home.

Another hardcore punk album. I guess I still don't really dig hardcore punk. Go figure. In the scheme of things, this wasn't the worst that I have heard, though. But still not really good. This seems to be another piece of early-ish punk history. One thing I can say that I like about hardcore punk is that they're usually quick and to the point.

Pretty cool and It’s definitely super influential but I just didn’t enjoy listening to it. Hard to get past the vocals.

2.5/10 The original purateens. I was here, in punk clubs and this shit just never grabbed me. This could be fun in a live, sweaty punk club, but it doesn’t need to be an album. Is there anything more annoying than being scolded by a know it all teen? No.

I don't like punk, so hardcore punk like this, I rather dislike it. Thank God it's short. I'll put it at a two, but a light two. I guess my favourite song was Betray? Couldn't really tell them apart.

At least it was short… I owned the Complete Discography disc at one point. Could’ve sworn I still had it, but I probably traded it in because I couldn’t get into it and never listened to it. I like Fugazi and even some Rites of Spring. I think I don’t much care for Ian McKaye’s voice. I can handle it in Fugazi; he doesn’t scream as much, plus he shares lead with vocals with Picciotto, so it balances out a little. I think it also helps Picciotto shares songwriting duty too. I’m no expert, but I’d say he keeps them from making every song into anti-capitalist screed. There’s only so many times you want to hear the Communist Manifesto set to music. Also, I can’t take the jackhammer rhythms of most hardcore. There comes a point where playing fast becomes almost meaningless because everything blurs together into pounding noise. I like the few songs here where things slow down some. There are a few monster riffs here and there that are cool. Otherwise, this really isn’t my thing at all.

Maybe the most abrasive vocals of any punk/hardcore band I've heard. Maybe not my genre overall but I did dig the punchy bass parts on Think Again. I didn't make it past the third track and instead listened to a more listenable punk album from 2 years earlier, the very uneven debut album from Bad Religion. I'm dismayed that none of their albums were deemed worthy of this list.

It is a short punk album. I had never heard of them before. It was alright. It got a little screaming but it was not terrible.

There's probably a handful of really good, non-derivative US hardcore bands and Minor Threat is not one of them

Finally, Minor Threat are more to me than just a line in a Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip song. This has got a fair bit going for it: - The guitars in particular sound like a lot of the punk/pop-punk bands of the 90s and beyond. Clearly their influence was far reaching. - There are a few nice changes of pace mid-track. - There's some wry humour in the lyrics. - It must be the shortest album on the list? So no time to get bored, in theory. - The album cover has sheep on it. Despite all this it didn't really click for me - I guess it's less than the sum of its parts. I probably wouldn't take 20 minutes out to listen again, and for that reason I'll have to give it 2.5 stars.

For something I don’t enjoy and won’t listen to again, I found this interesting.

One hopes everyone feels all better now and has go the jokey protest out of their systems. And one wonders if everyone would have been better off drinking and drugging after all.

Wow this was short and sharp. Luke really likes Minor Threat and has apparently played it to me before. I don't really remember and tbh this sort of blurred into Mud Honey for me. It didn't leave much of an impression on me

I was gonna make a “thank god it’s only 20 minutes” joke when I saw that it was hardcore punk but it’s unfortunately not *that* bad. However, I would still say that if it was longer than like half an hour I would hate it a lot more than I do. This is also probably the most juvenile punk album I’ve gotten at least lyric wise. High 2

BL: Aware of Minor Threat but never listened to any of their discography, will see what I think AL: it was just very samey. Most of the tracks felt pretty similar, and it felt quite sanitised. For a punk album it didn’t really feel that angry at anything in particular. Didn’t enjoy this one but it wasn’t massively offensive. Just don’t particularly want to listen to it again. This was some tough punk music. I can see why people who like punk music would like this because it felt raw and twisted. I have a hard time enjoying punk music and this album didn’t seem much different. Angry, young and talented that’s how I would describe some good punk music and this fit that but it’s not something I can enjoy. 4.0/10

Best Song: Little Friend. Juvenile and noisy in the right way. Worst Song: Cashing In. The spoken word "Wizard of Oz" bit probably sounded more artistic in their heads, but it just sounds amateurish. Overall: The sound of largely impotent (directionless?) rage. Everything sputters everywhere, briefly. It honestly doesn't feel like there's even enough here to comment on. It's nice and noisy, but not so interesting.

I listened to this on the way to work. It was good but nothing memorable.

Not bad, but honestly not very impressive either. While I'm glad it's a short 20 minute album as I don't think I could listen to more than that, it unfortunately has no standouts and kind of amalgamates into one big ball of fast noise and yelling instead of singing

I can appreciate how this album influenced other bands but as a standalone album, I didn't think it was that great. If this was my first experience with punk I think I would have written off the genre altogether.

I thought a lot of this album was chaotic BUT I could hear a lot of punk influence in later albums, like Blink, Green Day and Sum 41 so that I appreciated. I would have liked more variety to the sound overall.

A blink-and-you'll-miss-it ripper of a punk LP. Leaning towards a low 3 on this one, while fun and energetic it does feel somewhat homogenous and overlong even for its 21-minute run time.

A high-energy start to my random journey into the 1001! I'd never heard of this hardcore punk band, which Simon and Peter will probably find either hilarious or appalling. No doubt they were very influential on lots of punk-rock bands that followed, including the ones that I did listen to. It's not something I'd listen to again - the angry but mostly incoherent vocals were a bit too same-samey for me - but I appreciated hearing it for its place in music history. Good variety and change-ups in the arrangements, which isn't always the way for hard & fast punk rock.

Punk is a very hard listen for me. Every song sounded exactly the same. With that being said, cashing in was my favorite track and the slowest on the album.

What a waste of time and anger. There seems a distant chance Ian Mc has a sense of humor about this ... but it's distant. One pities all the people who had these t-shirts, as if the in-joke was worth knowing.

Okay I get it. You put your ears in a blender and you power it with angst and rage for around twenty minutes. I get it. But that doesn't mean that I enjoy it. Still, it's remarkably better than the Circle Jerks album that I got a while ago. And that closing track is a beast!

I listened to a little hardcore punk back in the 80s when it was more prevalent, so I wouldn't be surprised if I've heard these guys or this album before, I just have no memory of it. They are a good example of the sound of that time and genre. They play real tight. It's a bit same-sounding and too thrashy at times for me, but it's performed and recorded really well. Not the kind of music I listen to anymore, so I doubt I'll revisit this one.

It likely comes as no surprise this isn't my punk cup of tea. Reason number 1: one dimensional anger. Reason number 2: not a single melody, just yelling. I had a terrible temper as a 5 year old. I punched a couple holes in my bedroom walls. My parents had a tough time knowing how to handle it. Who knows why I was angry. It generally felt like some form of injustice, but who knows what specifically. I probably didn't get something I wanted and lost my temper frequently. I think 5 year old Ashton would've loved Minor Threat and whatever vague injustices they're getting ornery about. C- Postscript: straight edge is funny as hell. Especially violent vegan straight edge shows at noon on a Sunday.

I'm not sure what made these boys so angry but it's been a while since I've seen a 22 minute album over nine tracks that is punk rock. After clash and ramones, I don't know why anyone would try to replicate that but these fellas gave it their best. Unfortunately, their best, just like their album and art, was out of step.

It's all basic punk, enjoyable for a little bit. They had a great band name, but I never understood why they're considered better than lots of other punk.

Another bag of shite from yet another American punk band. A threat to good music? Not even a minor threat. Just out of step but no doubt cashing in.

That’s a hard no from me. On the bright side, it was only 22 minutes, so it could’ve been worse.

Not a fan of this genre and don’t really see how you can be. Kind of terrible. One redeeming quality was it didnt last long. Moving on….

The instrumentals were stellar at times, but the songs overall were so bad that I stopped enjoying even that bright spot. Which is saying a lot, considering the album is only 21 minutes long. My fear is that this is what non-millennials think Green Day sounds like, which to give them credit, the ending of Cashing In sounds like Holiday.

I woke up today with a headache so I have a feeling that this album will be pain I was right….

Pre Listen: Haven't heard of these guys, but the album title/cover is a bit on the nose. No expectations. Notable Tracks: Think Again | No Reason - I liked the bass work on a small sections of these tracks. I didn't like the overall song though at all, just the funky little bass moments. Give the bassist a raise, or better yet, put him on a band that lets him shine and doesn't loudly push him in the basement after a few seconds of sun. Look Back And Laugh - Such riveting lyrics such as "Fuck it man" and "I don't like to be hurt" and "Talk your shit don't fuck with this". Sure I'll talk my shit, this shit sucks bruh! Every song sounds the same! Little Friend - Stopped listening to the album here. I think I can make a wild guess how the last two songs sound, and I don't care to be subjected to this any more. Post Listen: I should've known the hot streak this project had going would end at some point. Yet more shiet punk where they just rip on the guitar and bang on the drums while screaming about problems they themselves likely created, over and over again, for every song. It still baffles me how every punk album just sounds the same to me. It's so unforgivably formulaic for a movement that prides itself on being "different" from the establishment. Guitar is loud, drums are fast (and also loud), vocalist is upset/angry (and also loud), none are good though. The vocalist seems to think that by simply yelling into the mic it's classified as singing. Music for teenagers who got yelled at by their Mom or Dad once or maybe twice and took it really hard. Or music for meth heads who have gone one (1) day without meth. "People talk loud when they want to act smart... so if we play loud, people might think we're good!" 1/5

Sorry, Rocket from the Crypt already blew through my (admittedly small) tolerance for punk this week. Nevertheless, I'd like to think that even if the algorithm had given me this pile of shit first, I'd still have correctly failed it.

This seems rather irrelevant. I don’t think it’s a must listen in regards to even the genre. This could have been skipped, and it will be forgotten.

Minor Threat’s seminal 1983 hardcore punk release Out of Step is bound to feel like a repetitive, exhausting miss if you aren't sold on its specific style. While tracks like "It Follows" bring some fleeting high energy and the hidden closer "Cashing In" finally delivers some enjoyable punk vibes, the rest of the tracklist—from "Think Again" to "Little Friend"—largely blurs together into a "meh" wall of sound. Because the entire EP is pinned at a relentless, high-intensity redline, the songs suffer from a serious lack of sonic variety and sound nearly identical from start to finish. Ultimately, the biggest roadblock here is the vocal style; Ian MacKaye's raw, barking delivery paired with the stripped-down, lightning-fast arrangements just doesn't offer enough musical diversity to save the record from feeling entirely monotonous.

I appreciate what Minor Threat is doing here, but this sound isn't for me. I just can't get into it.

I can't see myself ever wanting to listen to this, even when angry -- this isn't the way my anger feels, and I don't want to be around anyone who is feeling this way. - The "singer's" voice is annoying , which ruins everything for me - it's just yelling the same out of tune "notes" the whole time, and I have no idea what he's saying except motherfucker, boo fucking hoo, etc., and I don't care. - I found the songs to be completely forgettable. I can't find any compelling melody here, and I don't really care much about the instrumentation, either. - It's maybe 1.5 because there are moments when it's a little engaging, it's definitely ahead of its time, it's short, and it's not as bad as being totally boring, but I'm rounding down anyway.

Prior to this day, I had only known their song "Straight Edge", and I wish that's all I knew about them. Their only studio album is 21 minutes of ear torture. Favorite Track: "Look Back And Laugh"(at this album).

20 minutes might be short for an album, but it's long for a panic attack, which is what this felt like to me.

If I was stuck in a room, listening to this on repeat, I would genuinely lose my mind. It's a very effective torture device.

I had to put a little thought into this review. Did I not like it, because I'm not really a fan of Punk, or because it's shit. I decided I didn't like it because it's shit.

Well... it's a punk album. You already know it will be everything just one note but you will like it anyway. For me, it could be better. Like, you don't want a hysterical boy screaming out loud on your year. neither do I.

Blind album and artist. I actually got a migraine listening to this so im just gonna put a 1 and move on.

I got this on Christmas Eve. It is not the vibe for Christmas Eve. Not sure when this would ever be the vibe TBH though. At least it has the decency to be exceptionally short.

20 minutes was too much, gave up after 10 and listened to the roadworks outside their musical ability was much better. Absolute rubbish.

Don't care for this album. Just just like a bunch of yelling and screaming. Did not enjoy it.

Yesterday I had this screen open and my 8 year old daughter came in. She said, "Group Sex? Circle Jerks? Minor Threat? Dad, this is bad." She was right. That was the longest 20 minutes of my life.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that American Hardcore was not for me.

This felt a little too much like being screamed at by a skinhead for 20 minutes. The tracks totally bled together. When I checked Spotify to see how long to the album was left, I was shocked to realise I had already listened to it twice. I hold this minor threat in low regard. 💫

Out of step for sure, pure crap. And I enjoy some punk, but this was just the same song with a minor chord change and slightly different lyrics. Thank god no song was longer than 3 minutes. "Cashing In" had some flash, but not worth a full listen. I could feel some influence on bands like Danzig and Offspring, but that's where the compliments end. 1 star

Hardcore punk is not my thing.

Maybe they invented the hardcore punk scene in DC but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

Hardcore usually consists of: a hyperactive drummer, a guitarist whose main talent is being able to keep up with said drummer, a rotating cast of bass players, and a shouty guy telling you to make better life choices, all while riding around in an unheated van and surviving on pizza. On this album, Minor Threat blasts through 9 melody-free non-songs at record speed, only deviating from the template by doubling up on guitarists and by focusing the lyrics a bit more on soured relationships than the usual haranguing of the listener about their bad habits. (MacKaye can't resist a li'l of the latter on "Out Of Step", though.)

Even with the short running time of 21 minutes this album was still too long.

On the day after Dave Cousins of The Strawbs left us I had no stomach for this stuff. I did give it a cursory listen but first few tracks confirmed what I feared. Anyone who knows the music of Dave Cousins and similar will know why i cannot give any truck whatsoever to Minor Threat or are they called Out Of Step - who cares. 1/5 14/5/25

I was interested in this because I enjoy the punk vibe, but I didn't like this at all. Would not listen to again.

Not a good album. Just a bunch of noise and ridiculously loud guitar.

I hate punk music. It's just noise with no melody, the vocals are harsh sounding and unpleasant, the lyrics largely unintelligible. I was shocked at how recently this album came out too - surely this gimmick wasn't even novel or transgressive by this time? At least it was mercifully short

I am not a friend of punk. You add hardcore to it we are enemies. Thought it was just one long song and the album is so short, whats the point. I read that it was influential for some genres of music that followed, such as Skate Punk and Thrash Metal. Do I look like I care?

The best part of this “album” is that it’s only 22 minutes long (hardly a full length LP). Nothing interesting happening here, can barely understand the lyrics. It sucks

(I wrote this review for this album and then accidentally left it on Def Leppard Hysteria instead so…) Shout out to the album cover. That's the best part. The fact that 8/10 of the similar artists section on Apple Music also have black and white group band profile pics that look the exact same as theirs says a lot about how unique and special this music is. I honestly struggled really hard finding a song I’d be happy having in my best of playlist. Just boring and loud.

I just discovered I don't like punk.

I'm happy this album was short. I'm happy it was short because of how bad I wanted it to end. The vocals were annoying, and everything was very repetitive. I did like some of the heavy bass lines, especially at the beginning of the first song, so it gets some pity points for that. This album gets a "The Next Day" by David Bowie out of 5. 1.25 Favorite Song: Cashing Out just for the cool bass line Least Favorite: Everything else

The people that need to listen to this already have and they have shite taste in music. I deserves less stars than I can give it.

Very little distinction between tracks, could just as well been a 21 minute rant. True to the hard punk genre this album was a presentation of angry yelling & when the “artist” was seemingly at a lyrical impass the “F” word was inserted liberally. Understandably clear why this was their one & only release.
