I think I've heard this sort of thing before. Not much to distinguish it from a lot of other punk albums in this project. This one lands in the middle for me. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it.

Listening to the whole album felt like getting blasted in the face by yelling and rage…which I really would’ve liked at one time, but not anymore. They were great at what they did.

It was good, not bad at all. Maybe to wisniwoxneoeizjqpnw in the beginning but the last song is really good. It’s like it starts as a dislocated jaw and then transforms into a soft paper tissue being ripped very gently and into a bee flowing through the flowers. 6.0000000000001/10.

If I was going to pick a Minor Threat album for the list, it wouldn't be this one but still an important album in the evolution of music.

I guess I like hardcore punk. This is the perfect length for the genre - comes in hot and heavy, sustains that energy all the way through, and doesn't overstay its welcome.
One of the albums that started the hardcore scene. How can you dislike anything Ian Mackaye did and call yourself a punk? It comes fast, makes a statement and leaves quick… the blueprint of this movement.
An EP due to playtime, not content, this was a clear factor in the Hardcore scene as noted everywhere. Shoutout to them for taking the risk and pushing the boundary without corrupting the genre
I love that albums like this happened and the impact this had on punk, post-punk and all the guitar music that came after it. But that doesn’t make it that great to listen to. Would it have hurt to give your angst a bit more of a tune? I’ll tick it off and move on.
July 18, 2024 HL: “Betray”, “Cashing” From what I gather, the influence it had on 90’s punk & grunge, as well as thrash metal makes this a worthy inclusion on this list. I just don’t find it that fun to listen to

Not for me
Pretty much as hardcore punk should be - hard hitting, straight to the point, radged. The older I get the more I start to lean to Minor Threat over my old punk favourite Black Flag. I definitely prefer their first record over this though (and most other Mackaye records actually, that Embrace record was incredible as well as everything Fugazi touched), but this is still top.
Incredibly influential on all the pop punk I listen to, can hear a lot of offspring in this. It's great in it's own right though, has the wry, sardonic lyrics that most my favourite bands have. Ian MacKaye is the most principled man in music and though I think Fugazi are more interesting, in 1983 this must have been revolutionary. This album doesn't get close to outstaying it's welcome, very easy to put on repeat. 4.5.
Punky and snappy but a bit too shouty. To the point where I didn't really know what was going on, if I'm honest.
I know of minor threat as I've heard them referenced by a lot of bands I grew up listening to, but never given them a proper listen. Man, this was great. Exactly what I imagine when I think of what hardcore punk should sound like. I'm sure I've got minor threat to thank in part for inspiring a lot of bands I loved growing up Short, energetic, left me wanting more. Definitely be back.

Straight into it! This is right up my alley. I didn't listen Minor Threat in my youth and probably would have appreciated this more when I was 20 rather than 50, but still good. It definitely reminds me of a lot of stuff that came after. Solid, emotive, unpretentious. I like it.
This album wasn’t really my thing, but I can see how it probably spoke to a lot of people and was pretty influential. I liked that it was short and sweet and to the point; it said what it wanted to say without wasting your time.

This album is okay. I don't see anything that makes it stand out from other punk albums, so it's a drop in an ocean (in my eyes).
On uncovering “Out of Step” as my next album to listen to, I went through the following three states: mild intrigue and being unable to recall exactly who Minor Threat were; the sinking realisation that they were a preeminent hardcore punk band; sweet relief that their first solo effort is more of an EP at 21 minutes. It’s the perfect capsule for music like this: tight, taut, lean and then done, like a cold shower or blistering fire. Too much longer and I might have lost the will to live. Ian MacKaye’s vocals are high-spirited, but completely indecipherable bar the odd “FUCK”. This is hardly a barrier, though: if anything it drives home the animalistic, primal urgency of these songs. He’s buried low in the mix, as if the production is whipping the band into a frenzy until all comprehension is lost. Despite this, though, the players are deceptively tight: the overdriven bass from Steven Hansgen is a major selling point, particularly in his lead sections in “Think Again” and “No Reason”. There are also various switch ups in groove or tempo (see “Betray” or “Little Friend”). It’s impressive the band committed to distinct movements within such short songs, and it’s more than the Ramones ever managed. Finally, it’s very apt that the catchiest, least thrashy hook comes from a song called “Cashing In”, which suggests Minor Threat are begrudgingly playing the industry’s game. At its end, we can just make out the refrain of “There’s no place like home; so where am I?” Angst, angst, angst.
A good punk album. The opener Betray was good, but the closer Cashing in was great. Some of the songs in the middle were same-y. I may listen again. 3/5.

Was expecting something a little heavier for a straight-edge band but I guess it was early in the scene.
Sheep. They’re everywhere. Those woolly, innocent-looking creatures, just grazing in fields, but don't be fooled. They’re not as harmless as they appear. Oh no, they’re watching us, I tell you! Have you ever looked into their eyes? There’s something there, something sinister. They communicate in ways we can’t even comprehend, plotting and scheming while pretending to be these docile animals. Think about it. Why are there so many of them? They outnumber us, and yet we think we’re in control. We shear their wool, milk them, and even eat them, but that’s exactly what they want us to think. It’s all part of their grand plan. They’ve infiltrated our farms, our petting zoos, and our storybooks. The sheep are everywhere, silently biding their time. And then there's their leader. You know the one, that black sheep. The one that stands out, the one that doesn’t follow the herd. That’s the mastermind. It’s coordinating the others, sending signals through those eerie bleats. It’s no coincidence that when you see a black sheep, something goes wrong. They’re the overseers, making sure everything goes according to their secret agenda. Remember that nursery rhyme? “Baa Baa Black Sheep, have you any wool?” It’s a code. It’s been right there in front of us all along. Those aren’t just words; they’re instructions. The black sheep, the wool, it’s all symbolic. The sheep have been whispering their plans to us since we were children, and we didn’t even notice. And the way they move in unison, like they’re controlled by some hive mind. Have you ever seen a flock of sheep being herded? It’s like watching a well-oiled machine. They know exactly where to go, what to do. They’re training, practicing for the day they rise up. And those sheepdogs? They’re not herding the sheep; they’re working with them, keeping them in line, making sure they don’t give away too much. They've got us all out of step, just like the song says. We think we’re the ones out of step, struggling against the system, but it’s the sheep that have us dancing to their tune. “I can’t keep up, out of step with the world,” Minor Threat sang, and maybe they were onto something. The sheep have us out of step, out of sync with reality, making us believe we’re the odd ones out, the misfits, while they march in perfect formation, slowly tightening their woolly grip. And those sheep hybrids you hear about? Dolly the sheep? A clone! They’ve cracked the code of genetics. They’re experimenting, trying to create the perfect sheep, the ultimate overseer. We think we’re cloning them, but what if they’re cloning us? Creating perfect human-sheep hybrids to infiltrate our society. We could be living among them right now! Stay vigilant. The sheep are not what they seem. They’re out there, watching, waiting. And when the time comes, they’ll make their move. You’ll see. You’ll all see. Baa, baa, black sheep, indeed. They’ve got us out of step, and it’s time we started marching to our own beat, breaking free from their woolly chains.
Well, that’s 21 minutes of my life I’ll never get back. Literally whiny punks. Hard pass.

Hardcore punk is not really my scene, but great bass riffs and for what punk epitomizes, it’s all there. Good music to be pissed too, fast and edgy, but just not my go to listen.
Not a bad album but all of the songs sound the same to me.
Rating: 9/10 Amazing hardcore punk album, so many great guitar riffs and melodies. The energy is infectious throughout and the band really shines with the longer compositions. The shorter songs are great too, although they sound similar to one another. Favorite songs: Betray, It Follows, Think Again, Look Back & Laugh, Sob Story, Cashing In. Least favorite song: Out Of Step.
Pretty classic punk album
This is a weird one. Not as vital as what came before and after but maybe that's why it works. It borders on fun. Or at least there are moments of humor as well as some straight ahead rocking. Good not great but definitely something everyone should hear - Sob Story seems like a song from our times. Boo f*#!in who...
I liked the album but it just didn't feel like a 4. I'll have to check out Minor Threat when I'm in a punk kind of mood.
I would have probably dug this more back in the day when I was grinding on ramps and rails at the skate park. While not a repeat listen today most likely, I do give it some cred for its Punk/Pop influence. I can’t definitively say exactly who it influenced, however , I can’t imagine a world without the likes of drummers such as the great Travis Barker.
A short run album by a short-lived band but with a long reach influence across the entire hardcore movement. This album deserves a shared lane with their D.C. punk rock contemporaries Bad Brains and contains a lot of the same dynamics and tightness. Punk was not dead then and upon relisten is not dead now.
Love this shit! No holds barred…rock your face. Play fast and hard. Little Friend has a lil riff in there that sounds a lot like gotta get away by offsprings also appreciate what these guys have influenced. Not quite a 4 but me gusto mucho.
I gave Black Flag 3* so I’m rolling with the same rating here. I enjoyed it, but isn’t great. Mavs in 7.

It’s fucking great and as others have said, probably the quintessential hardcore album. The straight-edge aspect of Minor Threat was always a turn-off to me, not because of the message, but because of the militant and obnoxious attitude of some of the fans. …but that’s not the fault of the band. Anyway, the world needs more 22 minutes albums. Doesn’t matter the genre, make your records quick and to the point, give them a sense of purpose and urgency, and have them hit like a punch in the face that leaves the listener wanting more.

This is the shortest album I think I’ve ever listened to. This sounded like Black Flag with somehow Presidents of the United States of America mixed in. Seems like a short lived go in the 80s for them but I’m guessing the members found other bands or did solo work. Seems like they probably paved the way for a lot of other punk bands I’ve listened to!
Sweet! I love listening to artists that are legendary and that I have heard before but not their muisc. Minor Threat is one of them. These guys are so punk i love it. I dig this album. I can only imagine what people thought of this at the time of it's original release.
Out of Step is really repetitive to me. Most of the tracks sound way too similar, and give off the sam vibe. The energy is there, but no identity from song to song. It felt like 20 minutes of the same idea, something that I can sort of appreciate, since the drums and instrumentals were still good, but not truly be interested in. All in all, Out of Step is a decent album.

OK, I did not like this whatsoever, but considering with how horrible it could have been it was not absolutely horrible. And given the fact that it was only 20 minutes I didn’t have enough time to realize how truly bad it was. I genuinely would never listen to this again though it’s not something I would ever enjoy however, I do think I’ve heard worse.
9 songs 21 minutes Memories of university where during our first week we met B and he played us this terrifying music which was literally like nothing most of us had ever heard before. I must have soothed myself to sleep with some 21 minute single song prog pieces that night. I don't like hardcore, but I can definitely appreciate the influence and talent (or just *stamina*) to be able to play at that tempo that tightly. And by "that" tempo I mean the same frenetic pace that every one of these songs has. Vocals are awful but that's also kind of the point, so we'll allow it. TL;DR: not my bag, but I get it and actually in a way it was kind of fun to crush my skull for 21 minutes, as 22 would definitely have been too long (for real). high point: bass on "Think Again" 5/10 3 stars
The guitars giving there best
Alright, another punk album! Getting two punk albums in three days isn't something that I really wanted to do, but it's something that I'm fine with on account of both of the albums being good. While this isn't my favorite punk album, it's FAR from my least favorite. I quite like this album. The vocals are the make-it-or-break-it thing for me when it comes to punk. Entire albums can be ruined for me if I don't like the vocals. Fortunately, I enjoy Ian MacKaye's vocals. As is often the case, the instrumentals are where this album really stands out. Every song is just so high-energy and fun, and I love that. The guitar riffs and bass playing is amazing. The drums do feel a bit samey for each song, but that's not a big deal. That kind of applies to this album as well. The album is a bit repetitive, but that's not a big issue for two main reasons. Reason 1 is that the album is only 22 minutes long, so the album doesn't really give you enough time to feel burnt out from hearing similar songs for a while. Reason 2 is that even though the songs sound the same, that song that each one sounds like is pretty good, so I don't really care. The writing is very respectable and I appreciate what it has to say. Overall, this is easily one of the better punk albums I've gotten, and a pretty influential one despite Minor Threat only having one album to their name. 4/5.
I'm getting the impression that there's rather too much "hardcore punk" on this list. At least this lot can manage a power chord or two in an interesting way.
I respect the musicality of Minor Threat’s one and only album, but there’s just not a lot I am able to take out of it.
Out Of Step is a manic 20-minute ride of raw punk that has incredible energy and a decent sound, but I prefer the refinement and variety that came after it. Happy they kept it short, a low 3, I'd listen again casually, but not with a great amount of interest.
This isn't brilliant really. I like that it's short, it's energetic, and in some places it's quite catchy, but it's also pretty tuneless. Doesn't say as much as other punk albums, I think it gets away with a three because it doesn't overstay its welcome.

"Out of Step" is the only studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It is noted as being a critical release in punk rock, influencing the grunge, post-hardcore, skate punk and the thrash metal musical genres and the youth crew (straight edge - no drugs or alcohol) subgenre of hardcore punk. The lyrics have themes of self reflection, youth frustration, personal problems and difficulties with friendships. Minor Threat is Ian MacKaye (lead vocals), Lyle Preslar (lead guitar), Brian Baker (rhythm guitar), Steve Hansgen (bass) and Jeff Nelson (drums). Fast guitar slashes open "Betray." The band kicks in. MacKaye screaming about frienships changing. Dual guitars and the band gets groovy then goes back to thrash. At three-minutes, it is one of the longest songs on the album. We get a bass start in "It Follows." The thrashing guitars. All the things that MacKaye didn't like (cliques, herd mentality, bullies) have followed him into his hardcore group. "No Reason" has dual lead vocals. Another fun song. There's no place to be an elitist. The band actually pokes fun at themselves on the closer "Cashing In." They're only in it for the money. We actually get a guitar solo. The band shows it's melodic chops too. If you're looking for some good ole' hardcore punk, this is your album. MacKaye's lyrics are direct and maybe too preachy but you know where he stands. The band does show signs outside hardcore with the melodic and groovy/funky ventures they take. MacKaye would take this style a step further with Fugazi but this album is great on its own.
Hardcore punk that is atomic, lethal and throbbing and mid-80s (which feels late to the game), yet a nice balance to MTV confection.
Punk hasn’t changed much.
A big milestone in the hardcore music history, but it's equally hardcore for a normal person to listen to it nowadays. Good outro song, when they finally slowed down the tempo for a minute, but all the rest was quite incomprehensible mess, which I didn't enjoy in the slightest. I'm pretty disappointed, I thought it would be a much better album.

Well this was an energising record to play, and I enjoyed it. But I don't get why an early 1980s hardcore punk record is so extraordinary that it gets into this list. Maybe I'm missing some impact this record had...

An easy 21 minute listen for me. Clearly hardcore punk but a few songs could go into thrash metal territory. Pretty melodic despite being rapid-fire. This album takes you by the collar and you can feel the hot-spittled rage screaming in your face. Faves are Look Back And Laugh and Cashing In.

Screamy punk
Fast drumming! INCOHERENT YELLING!! Power chords! This album is 21 minutes and 40 seconds long, or about 18 minutes and 36 seconds longer than my tolerance for it, because every song sounded the same. The only redeeming factor was the guitar; even if the riffs are simplistic, they're entertaining.
I love a 22 minute album. All the heart eye emojis for that, at least. The actual music...eh? I don't consider screaming to be singing.
Pretty damn good, but way too short.
Sometimes I base the music off of what comes next in their radio… this was good but not my favorite. The songs that came on after were also good but not my favorite.
Hell yeah, this album showed that hardcore can be about politics but also could be about personal matters. It inspired me to write songs which were both political and personal.
I think i like punk rock, depending on the mood and in small doses. This epitomizes punk rock to me. Really enjoyed it more than i thought i would.
There is very little wrong with this album. A whopping 9 tracks that clock in for a 21 minute album? There's nothing more Punk and when the age of angry Punk kicked in, Minor Threat were the one's banging down the door. 4/5

Loud, noisy, yelly, profane, uninteresting. Didn’t even make it halfway through and this is the shortest album I’ve ever seen. One star.
Very loud and aggressive. Not really for me. The guitars were kind of nice but very simple. I think yelling has to be used strategically in music for it to be effective. Too much and it looses its power. 1 star

Short sharp and shiny, just how I like it. I've not really heard much hard-core punk but this kinda did it for me. High energy that doesn't ever get the chance to become tiring with the 21 minute run time. Fav songs: - Out of Step - Cashing In
Absolute classic hardcore punk. Only album with 2 guitars and a definite maturing in their sound. Bass work is amazing.
Great album
I'm not a punk efficianado by any means, but Sid & Nancy freaked me out enough as a child to discover the Sex Pistols at the ripe age of 14. Fast forward many years later and appreciating yacht rock more and more, I found this a bit wreckless and hard to listen to. The first couple of songs anyway. But then I appreciated the music the more I listened. But the lead vocals were horrendous. It's like the kids on the block were all afraid to sing and they got drunk uncle Larry to sit in with the band. The best song for me was when they were trying almost spoken word.
The music was cool, the attempted singing was dreadful.
6/10 Highlights: Cashing In Sob Story Think Again
4/5. Punk at its finest. The shortest album on here running so far at a solid 21 minutes. No song overstays its welcome and most lyrics are intelligible but the passion is there. Great to repeat listen to, songs are unique enough to stand out. I definitely enjoyed this!

Not for me
When I was a teen Minor Threat were a band I'd read about on the internet and had some mystique to them. I listened to some terrible quality mp3s with terrible headphones on the school computers. I was more into melody and harmony then and through a couple layers of quality reduction they didn't sound far off from the contemporary straightahead punk bands I thought were boring. I gave them another go years later, but they're still not really a 'songs' band so not much to latch onto. Now I like to hear groups that take advantage of distinct rhythms, and Minor Threat's vision seems coherent more than it does limited. This was cool. The guitars are great, like an American response to Wire. Lyrically and 'songs'-y, it's a bit slight, but style is worth a lot. music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)
This is broadly my favourite stuff to listen to: favourite corner of favourite genre. I hooted when it came up in this list. I love it. Just that in the context of this exercise, I think four stars is a realistic ceiling for 80s American Hardcore. Call it the Shitty Band’s 5.
strikes me a "skateboarder punk". But I suspect the popularity was more on vhs tapes than clubs. Not that that's a bad thing, comes in, hits hard and is short. knows exactly what it's going for.
It's far more fun being the black sheep than being amongst the herd. The fervor of punk rock in America reached further crystallization with this only full length from Ian MacKaye's first of many outfits. It's funny that it's called a full length because it lasts not even a quarter of an hour. Yet that time is spent given to some of the more insightful and lasting messaging of the hard-core/straight edge aesthetic. Never a second wasted, never a time poorly spent. Being out of step is a badge of honor. Favorites: Betray, It Follows, Think Again, Look Back and Laugh, Little Friend.
I dislike punk rock. I say this every time I listen to a punk related album and I include it in each review. That being said, some of the guitar work was pretty good. A lot of Metallica sounding riffs, which I will gladly welcome in a punk rock album. Minor Threat sounds like they know how to play their instruments. The singer sucks... And his lyrics are shit. But at least the other band mates can keep it going. The best part of this Album is that it's 22 minutes long. That's the one thing I love about punk rock... The write short songs and short albums. It is perfect for a non punk rock fan while doing this 1001 albums list. I hated how spotify thought I wanted to keep listening to Minor Threat after the record... So I listened to more than I needed. Oh well. As far as punk goes... This isn't awful. It's tolerable. Reminds me of skateboarding in the 90s and early 2000s. Wish I cared more to dive deep into the production but punk is so surface level for me that it really doesn't invoke anything for me... I basically just don't care. A surprise rating for me.

Legendary shit!!! This album has everything: Classic tracks, catchy melodies, great playing on all sides, high energy and it’s only a little over 20 minutes long! You gotta love a band whose full recorded discography is shorter than 50 minutes. A personal favourite for sure

I've never listened to Minor Threat but I do like punk. Decent album, aggressive from start to finish. Pretty raw and powerful, good riffs here and there. Didn't blow me away but I could hear how they were a huge influence on some of the modern punk I listen to. Good album!

It's nice to discover and finally enjoy who the Offspring were r̶i̶p̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶f̶f̶ influenced by.
I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. I have never heard a Minor Threat song and so this was all new to me. The songs are short and have so much power to them. As someone who inexplicably is getting into louder music as I get older, I think this album is going to be added to my collection. It's a shame the band only put out one full LP.
Not a huge fan of hard-core punk, but this was more accessible than most.

I love what I thought was punk. Then this algorithm gives me 80s punk and I fucking hate it. And I think fuck, I’m a poser. I hate the “real punk”. Out of Step is the first time that I realized no, I’m not a poser. The rest of it is poser shit. I don’t know the context. Is this the first of its kind? If so it’s a 5. I’m going to give it a 4 because it needs just a touch more melody for me. But this album, I believe, without knowing, or ever having heard it or of it, is the basis for everything I love. I will keep listening and it will likely become a 5. 8.7/10

I had no idea that Minor Threat were an 80s band. I’ve definitely heard their name before, but I’m not sure if I’ve heard anything by them. I’m sure they’d get mentioned when I used to read Kerrang back in the day. Note: after going on Wikipedia, it turns out they only released albums in the 80s. Not a clue then. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Out Of Step This was a decent 20th minutes of in your face punk music. It is angry, angsty, and probably lots of other words that start with ang. I like how punk music doesn’t tend to meander and rarely has longer albums. It just says what it wants to say, then skedaddles right out the door. I enjoyed this, but I’m not sure I’ll be returning for more listens. I’m glad I heard it, but it feels like a one and done.

A hardcore punk classic for sure. The only problem is nobody, I mean NOBODY listens to just this album. You listen to the complete discography album. It's only makes sense. I don't care if it's technically a compilation, it's the definitive Minor Threat album because it's got ALL the classics. I mean I guess you could just listen to this if you're a vinyl nerd or something. Yeah this is a 5. It's too damn good. If you don't understand that you might need to flex your head.

i actually dislike this genre so much. i really can’t get behind it at all. it’s hardcore punk and as cool as this probably is live, this doesn’t translate to recorded media. i’m going to give this a 2/5 because i don’t like it but this wasn’t the worst thing i’ve ever heard.
I feel like I've been on a run with these 80's punk records. Maybe it's the fact that I am usually listening on my morning commute, but they're not hitting has hard as I wished they would. 3/5
Very surprised that I had not heard of this band. The album is full of angst and anger. I can see how this was a pioneering album in the punk movement.
I can appreciate it from a historical standpoint, however, it was a bit samey for me throughout and I likely wouldn't listen to it again.
3.8 - Another solid artifact from the Washington, DC hardcore punk scene of the early-80s. I know these guys often gigged with Bad Brains - wish I'd been old enough to witness that energy. Clocking in at just over 20 minutes, this is a relentlessly raucous and fast-paced ride. Ian MacKaye pulls no punches with his angsty, potty-mouthed rantings. Standouts: "Betray", "Look Back and Laugh."

Need to listen to this with the lyric sheet in front of me. I know there is more to this than just blast beats and punk singing. Definitely the iconic punk style which I enjoy. Would’ve been awesome to see these guys live back in the day. Look Back and Laugh was my favorite.

Pretty standard punk/rock offering
I've heard prog rock songs longer than this entire album. I guess it doesn't overstay its welcome, but 21 minutes might be the official "too short" limit. Hard getting invested in something this short - almost feels like a throwaway and the generator giving me a day off. Musically pretty good. There's better punk out there, but I'm kind of a sucker for this type of music in general, so whatever. I was going to say that the vocalist sounds suspiciously like the Fugazi guy. Turns out IT IS the Fugazi guy. That brings me to my final point: Why the fuck is "The Argument" not on this list.

I love the rawness and energy. I could definitely align more closely with it if i had the same angst and wanted to rage in the same way. Still, i enjoyed the sound, particularly as it was more interesting than most early punk.

Classic foundational release for hardcore punk, here in its DC area denomination. Any true punk fan should have this on their shelves, along with the 7' singles. Everything's available in the *Complete Discography* CD by the way. Buy this--or the vinyls--on Dischord, one of the last genuinely independent labels still running to this day, founded by Ian McKaye himself. Technically, *Out Of Step* is more like an EP, but I'm gonna give it five stars nonetheless. This is gonna make up for the outrageous absence of many key albums by Fugazi in Dimery's list, as foundational for post-hardcore / emo / "alternative" rock / "crossover" rock as this one was for hardcore. At least four of those Fugazi LPs should be added to *Repeater* in the 1001 albums book, namely *13 Songs*, *In On The Kill Taker*, *Red Medecine* and *The Argument*. For those who might not know: Fugazi was a band that Ian MacKaye, the frontman of Minor Threat, founded a few years after 1983 with Brendan Canty and Joe Lally, quickly joined by Rites Of Spring's Guy Piccioto to share vocal and guitar duties with MacKaye. Retrospective lists about the supposed greatest albums of all of time often fail to quote them, which is a damn shame. But those lists don't really matter. Anyone who knows a little about music history in the Western world is aware of the band's importance and how their work was influential to so many "rock" subcategories. Going back to *Out Of Step*, what's also thrilling about it is how Minor Threat developped the initial "basic" formula of their first recordings in it so as to infuse some subtle melodicism and a few more variations in their new songs. It's still very much hardcore punk, yet you can sense the direction a lot of bands from the Dischord roster would then follow as they picked up the ball from there (bands such as Dag Nasty, Embrace, Rites Of Spring and Fugazi themselves, eventually). I know I've already used the word "foundational" a couple of times in this review, lol, so I'm gonna say it differently: whole music genres branched out of this particular release, including some where listeners might fail to notice the connection at first. *Out Of Step* is THAT important. Number of albums left to review: 379 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 282 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 147 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 200

Crazy that people continue to make hardcore punk when it so clearly peaked here. All 26 songs that minor threat recorded are worth your time but these are the most essential.
Short. Sweet. Fun. Energetic. Awesome. Ready to get my pump on in the gym 4 Stars.
