Angry and loud but not tight. Reminds me of early English Oi

Pretty good punk sound. Surprisingly explicit for the time, which is fine but it's just surprising. The flow does break down into screaming and yelling at times, which is a bit of a turn off.
Thought this was solid, can see Green Day being influenced by this band.
Definitely more my speed. I hear Hüsker Dü in there. Not sure who was influencing who. Zen Arcade was out around the same time.

Moraš bit u tom mindsetu ljutnje, nabrijanosti i agresije jer za šta su većinom hc punk albumi (u ovom slučaju EP) nego za to. Minor Threat je veoma poznat ovako općenito, a i dosta je utjecao na opstanak/stvaranje/održavanje scene iako imaju samo 3 EPa, bez albuma! Al men ti je to sve isto, više manje.
Imo sam razdoblje kad se minor threat roko uz punks not dead bedževe na torbi.

The only thing that makes me love this album is that it was their only studio album. For me it’s a kind of sophomoric punk which is I guess the point of punk.

I found this to be a unique eye-opener to the world of punk rock music. The sound is completely out of my own range of music interests, however I enjoyed the record, and felt that the short length (23 minutes) made up for a cohesive body of work. While it's not something I would personally listen to, I enjoyed listening and reading about how this album has become such a landmark within its genre.

Okay incredible adorable cover I’m not sure this will be my genre but I guess I also didn’t think metal was my genre. Or is hardcore punk incompatible with metal? I can’t remember. Really tryna rewatch SLC Punk though. Irrelevantly. Very irrelevantly as this is 1983. A year core to my identity bc of Flashdance. And The Hunger. And… what else. The 1983 of it all is a v good omen. ANYWAY. // Such a quick little guy! Will absolutely relisten when I’m more in the mood, bc a mellow morning drive to a sculpture park wasn’t it 😂 So I’m listening a few days later, on my flight to Seattle, which is also not quite the vibe but certainly moreso. “boo fucking hoo” in lyric form is so fucking good HA Reading how they informed the straight edge moment, something I haven’t thought of since high school, and having visceral flashbacks of cute boys in skinny jeans with the X on their hands in my art classes who I’d invariably learn were not in fact straight edge. I bet some were though. Interested in learning more about their place in hardcore history and wtf hardcore is relative to everything else, and how DC and New York and Seattle and anywhere differed or interacted or whatever. Star rating because I don’t think I can see myself listening to this ever again, but very very interested in the history. Bumped up for boo fucking hoo.

Recognized the band name, they were a local thing when I was in high school, though I was unfamiliar. Looked at the track list — nice! 9 songs, under 23 minutes. Should be fun. By song #8, I was wondering how 20 minutes lasted so long. Influential, OK. Like it? No, sir.

My inner pop punk princess was having a great time for the first three or so minutes of this album head banging along. And then less fun as it became clear it was just 20+ minutes of unintelligible screaming.
Minor Threat is a hardcore punk band.As a rule, I don’t like hardcore. Too loud and abrasive. Also, I didn’t like the violence attached to the scene. I don’t want to be in the mosh pit. However, I do like the Dead Kennedys. Jello Biafra had something to say and had a very dark sense of humour. Let’s see what they are like. The cover of the album is pretty neat. The album consists of short fast songs. The vocalist is not very good. The songs are guitar based. The guitar is like a buzz saw. The band seems to take itself pretty seriously. The lyrics, if you can decipher them, are not ironic or funny at all. Listening to this album gave me a bit of a headache. The songs do have a good fast beat. Good for the mosh pit!! Finally, all the songs sound all the same. This is not a very good album. Two stars.

At the time of 1984, I bet this hardcore punk, grungy garage rock vibe was super cool. Especially in the underground scene. Unfortunately, I'm not super about the counter-culture and such.

This EP and not album is one of the shortest things on here. Its basic punk that I've heard many times before. Nonetheless, it was probably very influential at the time. Wouldn't listen to it again.
Punk is one of those genres that I either love or hate. This one fell flat. The vocals were emotionless and the musicianship was unremarkable.
The first actual EP to make this list - it's not quite long enough to be classed as a full two sided album - and I was surprised to find it was recorded in 1983. It seems to be a definitive work in the development of Hardcore punk music and, despite the rather confrontational (genuinely) shouting vocals, the playing of the band is not negligible in the way it was with the Pistols and Ramones. Apart from the changing finale, the tempos were largely at Motorhead level and not easy to maintain. The riffs were not without melody, but on reflection I still would not confess to find the listening experience other than something I had to endure.
Like most hardcore albums, I didn't connect with this. I liked the music OK, but the vocals were tough for me. It is only 21 minutes long, though, so I wasn't too mad at it!
Well, good news, the album was short. I can see why punk rockers dig it. Very DC "we don't care" vibe. Now I've heard it, I'm good. Also, there is too much punk on this list. Too. Much. Punk, Dimery, you POS.

Already not fond of punk and even less so of hardcore punk but this was just so unimaginative. It came out earlier than I expected so maybe it was one of the first to put out that wonderbread dime-a-dozen sound but I still don’t enjoy it much. Good instrumental work though and it has the courtesy to only be about 20 minutes, so it could’ve been worse!

A pretty unremarkable ride through American post-punk, of the supposedly hardcore variety. It feels a blend of American punk (Ramones) and British punk (Sex Pistols) but rarely matching either. 'Cashing In' does the best job with God Save the Queen chord transitions, and Steve Jones-style licking; and finishing with a riff that serial plagiarisers Green Day nicked wholesale for 'Holiday'. It reminded me a bit of punk bands that the unhappy children at school used to listen to in the 90s, like Everclear and early Offspring. In fact this could be of that time, you cannot date it at all. But ultimately it feels like Tier 2 or even Tier 3 post-punking. Wire and The Dead Kennedys are preferable every time. Inessential.

Best thing about this album is the 21 minute run time. Punk has always been angry and aggressive but it was lots of other things, too, but all that feels buried here as the rage is turned up to 11.

I can hear the influence Minor Threat will have had on bands I like, and I know that in my teens when I used to listen to a lot of punk that I'd have really enjoyed this album... but as a tired old man I found it exhausting. The energy is great but the vocals are dire and when I really tried to listen to the backing it was actually pretty droll. There's some catchy hooks but this just didn't do enough to grip me. The vocals are genuinely dire even for punk and end up being a major turn-off. High 2.

Not really my genre. I thought that this sounded a lot like Bad Religion at first, but being from 1983, I was impressed at how they sounded quite a bit more modern than that. But then I listened to the whole album, and it kinda just grated on me with its lack of melody/harmony. It was just very dry and punkish without a whole lot of redeeming quality to my ears. I'm sure that it was revolutionary for the time and probably inspired a lot of other artists down the line, but it's just not my cup of tea. Two stars.

It’s hardcore punk! I’m sure I would love it if I were an angry teen. I just wish there was more musicality to it. Some of the backing tracks rocked, but I just can’t get on board with the yell-“singing.” As one reviewer said, “I get it, but I don’t like it.” 4/10 Acceptable

I had a feeling that I wouldn't like this album, and my feeling was 100% right. At least the album was short. Having said that, I actually didn't mind Cashing In. I would never listen to it again, but I didn't dislike it, so I guess that's something.

Hell hath no fury like political indignation scorned…Gotta begrudge these guys their principles and commitment to the fury that animates their music, but it quickly becomes monotonous and begs the question of what they have in mind that’s constructive beyond just tearing it all down.
1984. More British Punk Rock that has a rough and fast sound. All sounds the same on this album though.

Very loud and rather repetitive after a while. I couldn't tell you which songs I preferred, as they all sound the same a few tracks in. I would probably have enjoyed this in small doses at the time, but I couldn't imagine sitting down to listen to the whole album for pleasure these days. At least it's short.
Thrash punk at its fastest. Lots of screaming. I will say the bass guitarist can play. Top track is Cashing In, but they’re all pretty similar. (2.2*s) I think this Minor Threat would be better to se live, the album duo translate that well.
Much like blues, heard one hardcore punk song, heard them all. Minor Threat may have increased the complexity of their music compared to earlier works on this album but I can't tell. 20 minutes of the same. Not terrible but not great. I guess I'll give them credit for starting something newish and influencing others. Still just some angsty punks posing really no threat to getting radio play or winning any awards. This record is Out of Step with the in crowd but I'm sure the band likes it that way...1.6 stars.
Didn't expect much from a hardcore punk rock album from 1983. While it hits a lot of the tropes you get in punk rock it was a little cleaner than prior examples. As opposed to a mess of sloppy punk rock garage tunes you can actually pick out the individual pieces of this puzzle and understand the lyrics for the most part. Not sure what gets this onto the 1001 list but perhaps it was influential for a specific time or place. It's really just another punk rock album, but at 21 minutes it's easier to justify the listen and I guess there is little to complain about. Not gonna come back to Minor Threat but I appreciate the relatively low cost of entry for which it gets a little extra bump. 2.02 stars
Technically and sonically flawless, but kind of boring and fails to allure or goad. I guess since this is the quintessential Straight Edge album, it has historical merit.

As someone from the area, I always hear about DC hardcore in these hushed reverent tones whenever I go to local shows. Unfortunately, recognizing its significance to the local scene does not make me any more interested in listening to hardcore. Ironically, this makes me *way* more out of step than Ian Mackaye!

Loud and in your face, as hardcore punk ought to be. But if I'm being honest I couldn't really get into this one. Heard plenty of elements within that were distilled into pop punk in subsequent generations (e.g., The Offspring). Sob Story and No Reason were solid, as was the closer Cashing In. Would have preferred a bit more thickness to the mixing. Overall a very high 2 to a very low 3 for me.

I understand that this is a landmark album in the hardcore punk scene but I'm just not a fan. In college, I was surrounded by kids who would play hardcore music constantly. I even went to a few shows with them. But I never saw the appeal. Personal opinion here but it always felt to me like it lacked any teeth. It's like an angry declawed cat trying desperately to scratch you until it gets too tired. It might seem a bit scary until you realize how safe it really is. The songs all sound incomplete and like the band just stopped trying and moved on to the next one. On top of that, there are so many of these artists who sound exactly alike that it just bores me to tears. Apologies to fans of hardcore and Minor Threat, including some of my closest friends. You're all clearly seeing something that I can't. So enjoy but it's not for me.

'My First Rebellion'. This album is the monotonous, repetitive herd of white sheep - I am the black one, bounding far away.
This is kind of impossible to hear objectively with the decades of accumulated layers encrusted over it, from Fugazi and from the various punk movements it inspired and influenced. It's deep, earnest self-righteousness is a little eye-rolling to me now, but that's not really fair. It was a massive (sub)cultural moment at its release, even if it's a little baffling today. Still has an unstoppable energy and sounds like a shot of undiluted youth, which I suppose it is and always will be.

I managed to find 1 song I that was worthy of my listening. I have to keep reminding myself some of these albums are pre-internet thus the reason I have never heard of them. And why I did not pick it up on MTV is also odd since that was one of the few forms of entertainment us Genexers had. I wonder if they blasted this album in the arcades 🤔 Anywho. Sorry to say another one did cut the mustard <-- what does that even mean?

If I had been handed a tape of this instead of Kill 'em All back in 83/84, I wonder if my life would have been different. Make no mistake, we had a great time, but I could have used a little more of this in my life. Both are aggressive, dark and with a pinch of quirkiness. The sound quality of the original release have been "improved" by youtube fan remasters, tweaking the drums and bringing the vocals a little bit forward, which definitely helped me to understand the lyrics better. Overall, the lyrics just aren't as deep or relevant as I had hoped when I started the album. And I don't have the urge to immediately replay. I came into the album with a strong desire for it to be a banger, but am leaving disappointed.

Emmm, proto-Fugazi (which I, crazy as it sounds, used to think were inaccessible hardcore), but, and I don’t think I’m making the same mistake here, listenable only as history.
I hate this brand of punk rock, but thankfully it was mercifully short, and that works in its favor, this kind of high energy "fuck you" music is best in small doses, and some good guitar work too. Outside that I cant find anything else I liked or even tolerated.
21 minutes of hardcore punk music? Alright that’s fine. Not really my thing but for some reason I kind of dug this one. Not enough to rate it higher than 2 but not enough to give it the standard 1. That bass sounded really nice at times and the guitar tone was pretty nice too!
I like the guitar riffs and the aggressive energy but I wasn't really grabbed my this. Maybe it's the lack of melody and hooks.
I wasn't too impressed by this album, but "Cashing In" was a pretty good track to end this short album on. Also, the artwork is cute.

In the late 80's early 90's my introduction to punk was my cousins hand me down cassettes. The Ramones, Black Flag, The Dead Boys, The Clash, The Stooges...just to name a few. I was aware of Minor threat but since my cousin didn't have the tapes, I never heard them. This is my first real listen and to be honest if had heard it then I would have loved them, but as a 47 year old man it just gives me slight anxiety ,lol. But I think that's what punk is SUPPOSED to do to 47 year old men, lol.
It’s short aggressive and punches hard . I hear it’s historically important , it def is punk
A few songs are cool, after a while, there is no dynamics, no contrast, i guess it's relevant in certain punk circles, but I don't know if this album transcends that.
Punk isnt really my genre. Especially not this kind. That being said some songs are okay I my book.
It gets in shouts you in the face, hast some interesting harmonies and guitar solos and the gets out. If that's what you like about Hardcore Punk give it a try, for me too screamy.

i get it. this is a super influential punk album that did a bunch of stuff for the genre. i didn't really vibe with it, truth be told. it was fine, but definitely not something i would ever get back into.
All of a sudden I was halfway through it again, only noticed because I thought, it's been on a while... In fact it may have been on the third time around. Does that mean it was repetitive?

good that it's an EP. i wouldn't of been really able to listen to much more of it... it's just noise to me, sorta punk i'm not really into. though really can see an audience for it

Time and time again, bad singing ruins a band's otherwise fine (even good) instrumental section. This is one of those times. The vocals sound drunken, half-baked, and horrendously produced. The lyrics are presumably important, but they're so buried in the mix (mostly obscured by the crash-heavy percussion) that all you can hear is vaguely melodic moaning. It brings the record down at least one full star. I do like that the guitar and bass kind of "flow around" each other. Together, they're large and in charge; chunky yet funky. They make certain elements of the music, like the riff in Cashing In, really pop. Unfortunately, not all tracks are created equal in this way. Despite the album's runtime being a mere 20 minutes, the consistent, aggressively high energy really starts to drag around the 10-minute mark (with the only upside being that the final track is a solid album finisher). Earlier songs like Betray and Look, Back & Laugh are also mild standouts. 2/5 Key tracks: Betray, Look Back & Laugh, Cashing In

I understand the historic/musical importance of hardcore bands like these, but it’s hard to listen to. Luckily it’s often over before you know it. 21 minutes is completely fine

You know, at least this album was really short. It was really just a headache though. I was 4 songs in and didn’t even realize I was they all sounded so much the same.
The best thing about this album is it's length. I was pretty bored the whole way through, but at least it was short so that's nice Standouts No Reason Cashing In 2/5
Unimpressed
Like most punk, this one unapologetically shits the bed. Usually I can at least enjoy the musicianship of a punk album but this time I genuinely don't know when a song ended and a new one began. EVERYTHING sounded the same throughout. Noise for the sake of noise

I feel this to be an exclamation mark of an album (!). But, despite the energy, I found it a little tiresome. It's like too much of a good thing makes you feel a little sick ... well, this was not enough of a good thing - played very loud and fast ... making me feel a little bored. Not even the fun of the too much bit before I got sick of it. Maybe calm down and think about the lyrics. And melody. Then speed it up. Don't start at 100mph and crash into a wall. Pointless. Just saying. 5 for energy. 2 for interesting content.

It was only 21 minutes long, but completely wore out its welcome for me in 15. Not terrible, but one-note and extremely tiresome to listen to.
These boys are very angry about ... Umm ... Something? I did listen to the album and read some of the lyrics, but I couldn't tell you whether they didn't get enough pocket money when they were little or they were getting about the injustice of the capitalist machine.

I like this kind of thing in short bursts maybe but man a full album of this is way too corny.
Why on earth is this on this list? Shortest album ever with 21 minutes? I do not know if that's true (there are EPs longer than that). Other than that, this is just some fast punk stuff, and not very good.

I have a lot of respect for the energy and emotions that were put into recording this. But outside of going to see bands perform live (which I used to do a lot growing up) I don't really enjoy listening to punk. I can't really see myself going back to this.
A solid punk album. I find that I am either in the mood for this sound or it grates terribly. There is no in between. I like Minor Threat and could see myself revisiting this when I am in the mood. Much like Megadeth, I give this 2.5 stars.

meh. Normally I like the fast punk feel of stuff like this but this didn't do it for me. Really hard to understand the dude, lyrics were okay. Songs just felt very much like copies of each other. Not really a huge fan of this but it was short so had that going for it.
Short album. It was fun but there are many other punk albums I would rather go to. I think after a while they started to get really repetitive especially the vocals Favorite songs: Look Back & Laugh, Sob Story, Cashing In

This sort of shouty angry stuff just doesn’t do it for me. I would imagine a large part of the appeal of this would be experiencing it live. I’ve never understood the moshing thing though. Aggressive masculine energy. Better than the Black Flag offering though
I was never a big fan of hardcore punk so I knew exactly what I was in for. Thankfully, at only 21 minutes, this didn't overstay its welcome.
I started at 3 stars. But then I recognized that (-1) There are better versions of early punk rock and (-1) The vocals here are annoying. Still I will give 2 stars because it wasn’t bad enough for only 1 star.
I expected to hate this album, and while I did not love it, it wasn't bad. The singer actually added more melody to the vocal line than what I was expecting, and there were some unique up-beat syncopations by the band, who were tight in a genre that is easy to be sloppy. I wouldn't put it on this particular list, so it loses a star, but the album is not bad for hardcore punk.
Punk is not really my thing. I do like some of the more pop punk sounding bands, but this type of I guess gutter punk? Is not melodic enough for me. These guys do have an energetic, raw sound. The guitar sound reminds me a lot of The Offspring guitar tone.

My girlfriend will probably be disappointed in me for this but I just really can’t get into punk music like this. It’s all too quick and rushed for my liking. I did appreciate the short tracks though, not enough of that on this list!
I could potentially like the music here but the hell was up with the singer?! He sounded abit like Jan-Willem in meetings to me. With a good singer I might have given it a 3 or 4.

Tough, edgy punk. I've seen a million Minor Threat t-shirts at metal shows throughout the years but they never really did enough for me to want to don one. There's just something charming and yet also boring when listening to this album and one song ends and another begins. Each song has essentially the same tones, mic placements, production elements, and when one riff ends it sounds like only a second passes before the next riff (and song) begins. It's kind of kitschy in a sense like "hell yea keep this train rolling", but also beckons a "eh here's another one". I respect it but it's not my favorite type of punk.
