Hi- So Tough, Typical Girls, I Heard It Through The Grapevine Lo- Everything else Punk/Reggae-ish, cover that makes me uncomfortable to have on my screen at work...An actually kind-of enjoyable version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine...This album is mostly just obnoxious noise, but it does sound like a less-refined L7 to my ears. I like L7, though, and I don't like this.

Firstly, I wouldn't call this punk, it's a reggae album to my ears. Secondly, this is a masterpiece in uncanny irrelevance. It's just so FUN to listen to. I love the layered vocals They can't really sing, at least not in the traditional sense. But it doesn't matter. They make it work. And I love the way the bass, guitar and percussion make such a tight groove. The music is quite exotic sounding. A wonderful discovery!

A new one on me. As punk goes not bad

Been meaning to listen to this band for years and they did not disappoint. Incredible baselines and great lyrics delivered with great shakey effect making his a banging listen which I will defo revisit. Made me want to pogo in the air and shout 'Oi' take down the establishment and give everyone a hug.

Love this! Proper punk chaos with a dose of fun on top

Singing out of tune and cultivating an attitude like you've made no effort is SO PUNK. Oops, I am so punk I put on Bob Marley & The Wailers instead.

My initial thought when I saw the album cover was, uh oh Cannibal Holocaust! 😬 Hadn't heard of The Slits before, read a bit about them, post-punk feminism. Reckon they'd be great live (in a late night club). But this album did not resonate with me at all, doubt I'll ever listen again.

The best of this album IMO: - So Tough - Newtown - Liebe And Romanze (Slow Version) Unique album. Very weird. I enjoyed it. I wonder if Björk knows this band, if she does I can hear the influence. 3.2/5

Wow - that is the sound of the Cellar Bar, B'ham Uni, 1979/80. Makes me feel there's something going on, but I'm not part of it.

Un album globalement naze de la part de notre sympathique groupe de femens. Mes collègues présents en salle des profs au moment où j'écoutais cet album sur mon enceinte semblaient du même avis tant les regards tournés vers celles-ci paraissaient hostiles. "Mets moins-fort, pour l'amour de dieu !" me criait-on de temps à autre. Des paroles pleines de sagesse auxquelles je répondais parfois un "Vous connaissez Robert…" rempli de malice.

Hier, nous avons été victimes d'un énorme soucis technique au bureau, qui m'a empêché de pouvoir écouter mes albums générés comme à mon habitude. En effet, un electricien devait venir s'assurer que le système d'alimentation de l'étage était en bon état, et effectuer quelques réglages si necessaires. Seulement, après quelques minutes passées à examiner les differents circuits électriques, la lumière de l'étage commença à crépiter, pour ensuite clignoter. Après quelques minutes, nous étions plongés dans la pénombre. Pas d'inquiètude cependant, puisqu'un professionnel était déjà sur place, il devait sûrement tester la robustesse du système. Après plusieurs dizaines de minutes sans lumière, je me rendis à la cuisine pour chercher un verre d'eau. Quelle ne fut pas ma surprise: la cuisine était absolument inondée. Soudain, je fut pris d'un flash mental très puissant. Je me rendis au bureau de mon directeur, et lui demandais des informations sur la société de maintenance des locaux de notre étage. Un brin surpris, il me dit que la société en question était intitulée "Die Türe AG". Commençant à comprendre, je me rendis dans la salle électrique, et y découvrit une carte de visite laissée par l'electricien: Joachim Mörrisone, Elektriker. Je partis alors dans un franc rire, m'exclaffant: "Ahahahah, sacré Jim".

not bad I don't love it as much as I hoped

Weird vocal; a bit ploddy. Liked the dub element, but overall pretty average!

I'd like to believe they went with "The Slits" as their band's name because "Gash Wound" would have been too on the nose. For review purposes, one has to include the incredible cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", which is officially listed as a Bonus Track and was the B-Side to "Typical Girls" (Both songs are classic 5's). It puts the album over the top for me. Make that your Side 1, Track 1 and you've got a classic album. One could add one point for the audacious album cover photo, only to learn the girl on the far left was all of 17-years old in said photo so let's call that a wash. What else? Their original drummer's name was Palmolive, who felt that posing topless for the album's cover was a bridge too far and got thrown out of the band. Apparently none other than the great Nenah Cherry provides backup vocals on this album. According to my math, Nenah would have been 15 or 16 years young at the time, which is just insane. This album is a blast.

Man, there's a whole lot going on here. First impression is like a mix of Talking Heads (vocal delivery), The Police (rhythm section), Gang of Four (jarring electric guitar lines) and pre-dating Bjork's general sense of nuttiness by DECADES. A very unique sound. Album cover rules too!

This was alright. More weird than good. My favorite song on this album was definitely 'I heard It Through The Grape Vine', however, I knew that before listening. That song was the reason I was excited for this album, and it was not that.

Didn't even realize it was Punk at first, but by song three I caught on. I now realise this was an early counter culture album. Wouldn't listen to it again but appreciate it for what it is and what it contributed to the punk movement.

I got this album from Ed, a guy at work, and pulled one song off after listening once - Typical Girls. The Slits. Perfect name for a punk girl band and that cover art is perfectly outrageous. Ed and I worked in an open space, most of us were pretty artsy but I still felt funny about having six boobs covered in mud on my desk for everyone to see. After listening to this again, I've fallen pretty much just about where I was in 2002 on this album. Despite the reggae guitar, there's some interesting repetitive patterns that deserve another listen... but then only one more. To quote Billy Waldman "I hate reggae music. I hate it." Two tracks that stood out on this recent listen. The first, Instant Hit makes me feel like I'm passing time with a smile. The second was absolutely wretched, the cover of Heard it Through the Grapevine, made me feel like I need to clean my ears with a wire brush. Musically, this is probably a dos-star album, but these three girls made their mark on the punk scene in the late 70's and I'm pretty sure they didn't get a group hug welcoming them. It must've been a difficult go even with the help of Johnny Rotten. So, they score massive punk points for pushing thru and releasing more music after this.

The Slits know how to throw down and rock. They have a funky sound while still raging for traditional punk sound. Hearing them perform this album opening for The Clash would have been a bonkers show. One of my favorite punk albums.

Well… That was weird… And also really interesting? But good? This was weirder and wilder than I knew 1979 was capable of. It feels very unrestrained and raw. Sometimes that can be a great thing, but here it’s a bit too much. This is apparently a much-lauded album, and inspired many later artists. I’m not surprised they were influential, but it just goes a bit too far for me. The incorporation of dub reggae and ska create a cool underlying punk sound, and the I like how the lyrics challenge norms. And I usually like singers who scream and let their voices crack. While this is a touch too unrestrained and raw for me, much credit to these ladies for saying “fuck it” with their attitude, style, ethos, and music.

I found that I was relieved when my phone unexpectedly lost connection and the music was paused, I preferred the sweet sweet silence to this.

That’s a hard no from me dawg. I would write more, but I was preoccupied with The xx from yesterday.

really trying to keep my dislike of german accents from influencing me here. i found it pretty annoying at first but honestly it kinda grooves. lyrics are dumb but in the way that i tend to expect from punk music. pretty weird but honestly a fairly fun listen. 3-

Ehh not really a fan, it was a bit overwhelming and harsh. I did like their cover of I Heard it Through the Grapevine, could be fun in some contexts? 2.5-3 stars

Curioso este disco, dura 2:10 y he conseguido escucharlo en 4,30', por el procedimiento de pasar a la canción siguiente cuando no me gustaba alguna. Para llegar a ser una mierda pinchada en un palo, le falta el palo.

I thought L7 was the original merry prankster all girl band but credit to the Slits! Loved "shoplifting". They sound like a less manufactured version of the Clash.

This is a well fun album, BUT I didn't love every track. Some of them were a little irritating to me. I wish I could give a 3.5.

Loved this album. Like a female version of Talking Heads. Recent artists reminds me of are Remi Wolf and Nilüfer Yanya. First song comes in hot.

Nice organic rhythms, but the vocals are a bit too strange for me. Track 9 and 11 are the best.

Not my favorite. I know that The Slits were a ground-breaking, genre-defying band and, for that alone, they deserve a place on this list. That said, this album is a total mess. There's really one good track here ("Typical Girls") and the rest is kinda noise for the sake of noise. It's okay. But it's not good punk. It's just punk.

I read several positive reviews for this album because I was trying to understand it. Nearly all of them mentioned its influence and apologized for the sub-par musicianship. I'm sure they inspired a lot of people, but if the music isn't good, I'm not sure I need to hear it before I die. I can't imagine getting hit by a bus and my last thought being, "But I never got to that album from The Slits!" Best track: Adventures Close To Home

Great album. What struck me was how much the songs changed, in-song. Great listening album, with bits and pieces popping up to raise your interest. Grapevine, obv, plus Newton and Instant Hit were the big ones for me.

Guitar and bass provide a consistent road over which the percussion and vocals coast and swerve. And that percussion comes through in that this is a highly percussive album. Not hammering to the ears, though; There's plenty of energy here but the band is discursive while they are always together. The result is music both tight and loose, a sound that comes close to others but is always its own and good at it.

I can hear Bjork in this a lot actually - especially in Shoplifting.

Not my style but I see why it is so influential
