Reviews (page 7 of 7)
If people can actually like this stuff, this is the most acquired taste of all tastes.
I am not sure what this vocal style is but I never want to hear it again
Every heard of "The Slits," it's a band. No? Yeah, there is a reason for that....
This sucked and points off for a this ass band name. I have a sense of humor but don’t find it ironic. I guess that’s just punk or whatever this garbage is.
Quite a mix of musicality going on here but comes across as an unorganised mess. Not exactly an enjoyable listen - an acquired taste!
Did not enjoy that at all.
Just got on my nerves. Cover of I heard it on the grapevine was good though
Largely a random array of sounds and wailing. Butchered I Heard It Through The Grapevine as well.
Sorry this is quite bad.
Hmm... an all-girl band named "The Slits". Is that feminist? Anti-feminist? Is it the whole point to ask those questions? Is the boobs out thing supposed to be punk or just a device to shame you for looking and then accusing you of sexualizing them? It doesn't really matter, the music and the band sucked and even the cover isn't worth revisiting.

Really bad
Fuck rating albums. Just let me listen.
Yeah, this is not for me. I couldn't understand half of the stuff they were "singing" about.
Like early punk. Sounded like a middle schooler’s first band.
This is the kind of thing I can imagine your average gender studies student listening to and enjoying.
A punk album that feels like it’s trying to win a Grammy by being full of songs that sounds like a random bunch of artsy b-sides with no clear direction at all. Pretty nice cover of I Heard It Through the Grapevine but other than that. Not for me.
jahas ja länsimaalaiset naiset yrittää tehdä musiikkia ja tässä tulos... increase the fucking pay gap... noh pitää vähän myydä levyjä niin laitetaas tissinäkyvyyttä pikkasen heh... meillä taitoja paljon taitoja... hold up pitää aina mainita kun western woman tekee lammaslaulua bäähäääähäähää bähääähääää. mitäh vittua ön tömö?? phlug kugy kugy kuygy sellattin ja siitä! ja tuosta! ja noin! huudahdelen kun vedän akkoja turpaan nii jumasti.. sitten pysytään sieltä studiosta kaukana ja matkustetaan keittiöön leipää työstämään jos tällästä rupee vapaa-aikaansa käyttää hyi helevetti sentään pois shopliftinbg
I cant understand how or why this made this list.
Interessant
Absolutely unlistenable
Not what I expected from this girl group. In a bad way. Simple, reggae (?) inspired drums and bass with strange bored sounding vocals. Shoplifting offers something approaching punk rock but the sound is so muddy and the high pitched shrieks don't work for me at all. FM is back to monotone vocals over music that sounds unfinished, or just out of tune. I can't believe there's another half dozen songs of this to go. There's a couple passable basslines at the end, but in general there's almost no energy or melody and the vocals are so bad. If you have to listen to something: Typical Girls. Otherwise, cut this from your playlist. Get it?
1,3/5
terrible.
I literally cannot make heads or tails of this album. Is it avant-garde? In which case, is it actually pretty decent? Or are they actually just fucking bad at music? I literally don't know. What genre do you even call this? Utterly baffling. Two stars, I guess. Jesus. Edit: update. It's the second one. Fave songs: - Typical Girls - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
??? 1/5
Weird and not in a good way. The opener before your friend’s show that people kind of talk over
no
Why?
Mist!
I give this 1.5 Stars. It was pretty awful. It did have some experimental notes that reminded me of Jessica hoop. That were okay but overall not worth the listen
Tedious all girl post punk bank taking down capitalism or something. Unlistenable. Would never be here if the band wasn’t from the UK.
The artwork is beautiful but the songs are really just not it. I have never heard such a poor version of through the grapevine
There's titties on the cover so at this album has something going for it. I just don't understand what kind of sound this group was going for here. It's like they mismashed elements of punk, ska, reggae, and rock. The first half was pretty dreadful. The music sounds so bad in Spend, Spend, Spend. And then the shrieking in Shoplifting made me almost want to turn off the album. The 2nd half was slightly better musically, but my god the singing just sounded so bad. Typical Girls is a good example of this. I stuck around for Heard It Through The Grapevine and it almost swayed me to bump this to a 2. But alas, I just can't do it. High 1.
Wow I hated everything about that album and it made me angry now. I am not even going to give them the benefit of the doubt with the Grapevine cover caused they f'ed that up too
Not a style of punk that appeals to me.
¿?
Don’t get this at all looking through the reviews and reading up was really influential doesn’t mean it’s not shit
this sucks
They should've paid me to listen to this...
anche no

2/10
ummm not sure how to describe my feelings other than yikes?
2/10 Their cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine is fantastic but the rest of the album is a long way from it. And apparently Grapevine was meant to be a B-side anyway. Won't be revisiting this one. Listens: 1
1.The first song is very bad i dont like it at all no rhytm just random jibberign excepthe guitar is quite funky 2.this song was also quite odd i dint like it not much to say 3. listened to whole thing absolute ass
Perhaps they should have “cut” all these tracks from the ones they decided to keep. I can’t imagine what the album would have sounded like then. This was horrible. Honorable mention for “Heard it though the Grapevine”, at least that was a little interesting.
Talk about an album cover not aligning with the style of a band. As this played out, I was convinced this was the soundtrack to a bad stage play with the petulant character Veruca Salt from the original Willy Wonka singing.
Nah, too much shit punk on this list
Maybe it’s because I didn’t sleep well but this got on my nerves real quick. Apparently this was really influential, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it or that it is necessarily good.
Gekrijs, na 2 min uitgezet
Just not really for me. There were times when the tracks would get catchy, but I'm just not into this vocal style.
1/5 kansi kamala, laulanta kamalaa, en halua kuulla tätä uudelleen.
Strange punk band. Weird music.
Weirdly labeled as punk when it's just low quality reggae. I know a lot of that early British punk included a lot or reggae, but this is not that. This is just kind of crappy AND boring. A one two punch that kills this for me. Also, that cover sucks. So...
Please make her stop! She cannot sing.
Weird weirder weirdest
It's been awhile since I let someone take a shit in my ear but here we are. There is literally nothing redeemable or good about this album. It is a statement on how to not make music
I don't know, this was just... slightly melodic noise? It had some punkiness to it that I sometimes liked, and that 80's German edge that was kinda cool, but musically I just found it very thin and was glad when it was over. Sorry, one star.
The obvious reggae influence makes this more interesting than a typical punk release, but not better.
Terrible!!!!
Genuinely one of the worst albums I've ever listened to. Borderline incomprehensible, shrill, and hardly even rhythmically in-time. The CCR cover is honestly insulting, and most of the "songs" barely qualify as such. Might be the first album in this project I contemplated not finishing because of how unappealing it was to listen to
An album can be influential, and not be required listening. Sometimes these things can just be written about. This is one of those times, as this is terrible all around, from the instrumentation to the vocals. It was just bad.
Sounds like a bad high school project 1/5
1.5 barely
Have you ever wanted to listen to bad music? Then this album is perfect for you! In my opinion, I hated this album because it's too much of an old timey album. Another reason why I don't like this album Is because I don't like the instruments that are used in it. They just don't sound good with the lyrics and the singers voice in my opinion. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I don't like it at all and I feel like someone else wouldn't like it either.
Slits = vaginas
I dont really get it, I wasn't even sure the genre I was listening to through a lot of this. Is this like pre-ska girl punk? Dub-Jazz? I like her voice at parts but there's a lot of stuff that feel out of time. There's moments in this album that I dig, track 5,6&7 makes sense to me and some of it gets groovy, but there's lots of just artsy weirdo shit that I can't really figure out.
Not a fan of the vocals...not a fan of the instrumentation. The only good thing was the provocative album cover, and I could only see a 1" by 1" version of it on Spotify. Seems like anything classified as post-punk just means "Yea, the music IS shit....but they paved the way for all these other bands." Would prefer to never hear this again.
Awful.
It's like a way way worse the police copycat band with allot more vocal experimental outburst and worse instrumentation. And way more Jamaican impersonations than needed
This album is terrible. There have been moments throughout this project that I've wondered what the thinking was for including an album, but this is utterly mind-boggling. Spend, Spend, Spend: I'm fairly certain there was a goat bleating in there somewhere Shoplifting: Just a lot of shrieking for what seemed like absolutely zero reason Everything else sounds like early Björk, except not in a good way. Typical Girls: Not typical, and more goat bleating. Or maybe this one was a sheep? This whole album was trash.
oh wow that is horrible, no thank you
I'll be real: artsy post-punk is definitely not my thing.
There’s absolutely nothing I enjoy about this record. It’s a disaster.
Ugggg, horrible. Had to stop listening after 5 minutes. Wretched.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31g0YE61PLQ
Shite all round
Rating: 2/10 Interesting idea for an album (tribal punk), absolutely horrendous execution. The vocals are so bad they ruin the album, also could not stand the drumming on here.
This was trash

It's bad. It's the type of album some snooty music critic would tell you that you just don't understand why it's perfect. The vocals are rough, the musicianship is rough, the mix is rough.
Couldn't get into it. 1/5
The out of sync vocals are really off putting.
1. hit - 1 2. tough - 0 3. zpend - 0 4. zhop - 1 5. fm - 1 6. touun - 0 7. pong - 0 8. love - 1 9. girlz - 1 10. home - 0 11. grapevine - 1.5 12. romanze - 0
been a while since an album has hit all the right beats for a one star. British debut from an overplayed genre with no accolades or reasons why it should be here beyond country of origin, and the album does its best to try to be ska or something but just comes off as annoying.
I think it says a lot that the only song I slightly liked was the cover of Grapevine.
Schlimm
Overwhelming relief when it was over
The Shits lol
I like the cover on this album but I just don’t think it’s good enough to be on here. Not even close!
What the hell did I just listen to? This is one of the best albums ever?
really not good
Sweet album cover - the rest was kinda unlistenable. Punk, ska without a good sound or songs.
Wie schrecklich.
This was horrible. They killed a great Marvin Gaye song. I’m done with the English early punk rockers on this list.
It just sounds like garbled vowels and occasional consonants due to annunciation problems but I think that might be in part due to me not being a big fan of the punk scene. If there was an option to vote for albums off the list, I would gladly use it on this because it’s just weird from beginning to end
The best part about this album was the cover. Absolutely no musical talent, both singing and instrumental and the whole thing sounded like one long song. 2/10.
Why is this on the list... like really... Nothing special about it. It's bad. I get that it's raw but that doesn't mean it has to be shitty as well.
I really don't see the appeal of punk personally. It's just noise innit
I was pondering a very generous 2 stars. Then up came the penultimate track, which is almost certainly the worst version of 'I Heard it Through the Grapevine'; truly an abominable insult to either the original or Marvin Gaye's version. Debate settled. 1 star.
STANDOUTS: I Heard It Through The Grapevine OVERALL: 1/5; just...no. Noises.
Just some whatever that whatever.
This is so bad that I was actually glad for the extraordinarily weak production, obscuring at least some parts of this auditory abomination. It's fitting to my understanding of the punk and reggae genres how the band's description on Spotify talks about the band's utter lack of any musical skill or experience and how much they were derided, as if it doesn't matter at all. Sure, if these girls taught other little girls that it can be fun to mess around with instruments and rock music, that's a very positive legacy to have. But in terms of musical quality, this is a top contender for worst of the 1001 albums in this book, and that's saying something.
Hot take, but I don’t think people who can’t play their instruments should be putting out records
Quite liked Heard it on the grapevine but tbh the rest is shite
I just did not like this. It was very disjointed which is probably the point but I just didn’t like listening to it. Best song was the cover of I Heard It Through the Grapevine
Genuinely surprised to find out this isn't a joke pick like what Philosophy of the World would be
More like The Slits my wrists
It's clear everyone on the record had more fun making the album than I did listening. I sincerely doubt I'll ever return to this one, I guess it's a popular early Post Punk record so good for it but I'd just rather listen to something else.
Not for me, nope I get the whole It was super punk at the time, but the music is very meh
I'm just going to copy another reviewer: Oh good, more late 70s English punk. Again. After all the rest of it. But it's ok, I'm sure THIS one will be a masterpiece and not amateur garbage like everything else from that time. And they're called the SLITS! I'm sure that's not a reference to anything. About as subtle and sophisticated as everything else about this genre I guess. But I'm prepared to be blown away. ha ha no, it fucking sucked. 1/5.
This is like being yelled at by a 13 year old. Why is it on the list?
It feels like she’s just mumbling out of tune the whole time?? I don’t get this album honestly, and don’t like the shake/vibrato she puts on her voice. Apparently has some Jamaican influence, I’d argue they’re not good ones.
Kann man nicht anhören. Ständig schief singen.
The first half of this album felt like I was being trolled. Then the second half hit and I was sure I was being trolled. The cover of "Heard It Through The Grapevine" was fiiiiiine I guess?
Well, that was definitely something.
Absolutely trash. This isn't punk rock, this is just complete nonsense. What's up with the goat noises? 0/5
hmm what if we combined punk yelling with some reggae beats? yeah we could make that happen! guys, IT WOULDNT EVEN HAVE TO BE LISTENABLE!! omg people would love it!!
Schräg und schlecht
No. Weird. What, you put tits on the album cover and call this talent? Please. They should’ve kept their day jobs and shirts on.
Heard it Through the Grape Vine is a great track and showed what was possible. The rest of the album sounds like a badly edited demo track. Like one made the morning it was turned in. You can wax on about how raw the sound was, how they influenced other artists, etc., and that’s just sophisticated cover for this album just wasn’t good.
This group may have inspired others to do good things, but themselves are just meh.
Why is this on this list?
The slits more like the sluts with all the dick it sounds like they’re munching on 1.9/5
How does the author get so much content from so few eras. Psychedelic, punk are 2 in particular that are overrated in their value to music.
Not a fan...unpolished but not high energy enough to make up for it imo
Oof. This album was a fairly painful listen. It had a few tracks that actually sounded like music, and I did enjoy their Grapevine cover. Props to them for this somehow being influential though.
throughout Cut, i wanted to cry. the Slits struggled to strike a balance between musical experimentation and cohesive songwriting. while their fearless attitude is commendable, it's ultimately overshadowed by a lack of musical cohesion and direction. solid 0/10 from me.
Some future influences on the Cars, Police and B-52s???? Lyrics simplistic / repetitive.
bitte nicht
Punk was deliberately shit. So it follows that 45 years later, it is still pretty badly shit - no extra points for boobs
No good
meh
Awful.
Interesting punk music but some kind of boring and not my taste.
Has the honor of being the most unorthodox, slightly enjoyable 1 rating so far.
Not a good album, nothing redeemable about this one for me. I didn't even want to try and like it, silence was preferable to the noise which this album was. I appreciate this album may have been significant at the time, it's just not for me.
Didn't enjoy this, the vocals are really grating and none of the songs grabbed me at all. Fair play for breaking conventions
Holy shit Not listening to any more of this (Got through first song) Nice badonkas tho
More UK punk/ska/not good music
sounds like the matilda broadway musical kids. awful.
Actually bad
Not my scene
This is absolute crap.
Can’t believe I listened to more than 2 songs. Call it wishful thinking
i’m sure someone likes this
Apparently very influential album, and additionally, totally unlistenable. A mix of reggae and wolves howl isn't that enjoyable, I was basically grinding my teeth while listening to them. It's a great milestone in music (I guess?), but we should be moving on from that and put it into Hall of Fame Bu Don't Listen Please.
boy do I hate this cover of heard it through the grapevine, but I do appreciate it. I know its antithetical to punk music but I really just only enjoy listening to a more polished sound. not terrible but not my thing. best track: instant hit
Kedelig 70’er punk, mangler energi, måske indflydelsesrigt
Noise
Really had to fight to listen to this from front to back. Nothing here for me; the weird punk/raggea/ska vibes do not mix an match for me.
patético simulacro de reggae. inescuchable.
punk with unbearable vocals
So far I like the cover art more than the music...
Listening to this whole album was an exercise in patience I won’t repeat
It has an impressive reputation as a landmark album, but, in reality, its pretty shit.
garbage.
This fucken sucks, only good thing about this band is the name.
The Slits are listed as post punk/reggae.... Oh no. 3 guesses as to why an all female band would be called The Slits.... This was really just noise. Uninspired, jangly horseshit. I don't know what the singer is doing with her voice when she does that warbly twittering, but she sounds like that gangly Russian dick from Vitas when he's singing that song The 7th Element. I think they glued a speaker to the fucking hi-hat for the song Spend, Spend, Spend, because the crashing drum noises in that song in particular were deafening. I'm quickly realizing that I hate post punk. All of it is just noise. Nothing was influenced by this garbage. The only song that was listenable on this piece of shit was a cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine. I even listened to the album twice trying to see the appeal, and all I found was a headache. Can't wait to forget this trash. Favourite songs: I Heard It Through The Grapevine.... I guess Least favourite songs: "Spend, Spend, Spend", So Tough, Newtown, Love Und Romance, Liebe and Romanze 1/5
It's bad. It is not good. I do not care if it influence other groups. I did not need to hear it. It is better than a 1 but not a 2. I will round down.
Voor dit soort bands zijn brandstapels uitgevonden.
Na Bob krijgen we ineens experimentele reggae. Brrr.
Ai. In mijn boekje is dit vals.
...nah
Grim
The Slits? Get it? "Cut". Get it?? Topless women on the cover. Got it yet? All are cheap marketing gimmicks that they had to use because they couldn't pull off punk or ska.
I wanted to like this going into it...but good lord. This was a disaster. Unlistenable vocals, mostly basic instrumentals, woof. I Heard It Through The Grapevine was the only cohesive track, because it turns out you have to actually pronounce the words in a cover
Not that good.
Is it still cultural appropriation if you suck at it?
Bad
Apparently this album is influential and that's why it is included in this list. The only thing this album influenced me to do was turn it off
Yes to the feminist sisterhood. I love how uncompromising this is and that it defined a genre and inspired others. The only problem is that it's unlistenable. Just really, really, really, really bad. Rating: 1/5 Playlist track: Typical Girls Date listened: 09/02/23
Don't let tik tok discover this, I don't want to hear it again
its been 12 hours since i listened to it and I cant remember a single song, thats how bad it was
Did not enjoy this one.
No
The only good thing about this is the album cover. Utter crap!
This was a difficult album to finish. The women in this band did not make enjoyable music. At one point they yelled like banshees which was questionable. The cover of heard it through the grapevine was putrid and insulting to Marvin Gaye. A really bad album. 1.7/10
I didn't like this album. I simply do not vibe with this at all, most of the songs just sound like noise to me and weren't enjoyable. But that seems to be the case for most old school punk albums to me. Favorite song: N/A Worst song: N/A
This is pretty terrible.
The only thing I liked was the cover….
Good if you like noise or terrible audio levels and bad vocals. Why is this in here?
Discordant and honestly, awful.
What the actual fuck is this? Random yelling and screaming instruments coming in and out, the album is so disjointed and a cluster fuck.
Silence never sounded so sweet as it did when the final track of this album ended.
Not my style.
Not my cup of tea; some tracks like nursery rhymes, some noisy. I’d never listen to it again. Poor 1, maybe a 2 because it didn’t hurt my ears.......although it was starting to !
This isn't music. this is a toddler banging on pots and pans.
This is utter rank, not sure what they were going for with this album. I'm actually quite relieved it's all over
Not a fan.
Really
Not my jam. I don’t think I’d ever listen again
yuck
Meh
Singing out of tune and cultivating an attitude like you've made no effort is SO PUNK. Oops, I am so punk I put on Bob Marley & The Wailers instead.
My initial thought when I saw the album cover was, uh oh Cannibal Holocaust! 😬 Hadn't heard of The Slits before, read a bit about them, post-punk feminism. Reckon they'd be great live (in a late night club). But this album did not resonate with me at all, doubt I'll ever listen again.
Not good
More like the shits
its like a bad mix of le Tigre and Caribbean music 1,5
Not my jam
That’s a hard no from me dawg. I would write more, but I was preoccupied with The xx from yesterday.
just not it
One ok cover, the rest is indistinguishable from noise
Sounds shit
Not my kinda thing but I can see how some would jam to this
Couldn't get through it.
Pile of dog shit
Not a fan.
The worst so far. One continuous terrible song.
Just wasn’t for me
Punk/reggae all female learned instruments as they went A couple decent moments but not my thing
early punk, super weird. not good
